I can totally sympathize with the friends who talk through movies or don't even bother to watch them at home... It drives me CRAZY, especially if it's a movie that I feel passionately about.
I saw the second Matrix movie with two groups of friends: With the first group of friends, we took a couple of hours to discuss the philosophy of the movie (ignoring ITS weaknesses) and what we hoped to see in the third.
The SECOND group of friends - I TRIED to get them to talk, but they were just like, "Heh. Fighting scenes."
It was a sad, sobering experience. :(
I know that the second Matrix movie isn't everyone's favorite, but there were a lot of themes in there that were worth discussion...
anyway...
I don't get that. I mean I understand if movies aren't a person's "thing". If its just something they don't enjoy as much as I do, or they just don't have the appreciation for film that I do. I get that. But why even bother to watch a film if you aren't going to REALLY watch it?
But I suppose it comes down to this, for most people, movies are JUST entertainment. They don't take anything away from it (and I admit I like mindless entertainment as much as the next person). They don't see any meaning in film, because they aren't looking for that. When they decide to see a film, they aren't looking to analyze it, or take anything from it, they want a way to pass the time, or have a bit of fun then immediately forget about it. But having a movie you haven't seen on as "background noise" seems a tad silly to me. Just turn a radio on. ;)
Oh and I have to say.....its drives me a little crazy when I say I dislike a film and they automatically assume that I don't "get" it. It happens when I mention I am not a fan of Mulholland Dr. I don't know how many times I have been told "well, its just because you didn't UNDERSTAND it". No, its because I think it is a muddled mess and it did absolutely nothing for me. I am a Lynch fan. I just don't like that film. I don't need people talking down to me about it. ;) Its all about your own interpretation of a film, and what you think it is trying to accomplish, and if it accomplished that for YOU.

*snicker* Well, that sir, is a powerful argument and COMPLETELY changed my opinion of the film.

Yet another remake that apparently was just a bad, BAD idea from the get go. Kind of like another one I can name, but won't, because I have bitched about it ad nauseam....*coughblackchristmascough*

Yeah, but I am assuming that you actually WATCH the films you discuss here. ;) Sometimes thats me as well, sometimes that is EXACTLY what I want. Its why I like so much crap, it purely escapist fun...there is no shame in that. Other times I do want a film to challenge me a bit more. Its all depends on my mood.
And no one did.....haha...;) But some people seem to have no problem proclaiming that they did, and treating someone else like they are a complete idiot just because that person didn't happen to appreciate it as much as they did. I have no problem that other people like it, or love it, its when they annoyingly insist something is wrong with me because I didn't.

I enjoy movies for entertainment 9 times out of 10. I do WATCH them to get stuff from then but I never really pick a movie apart and analize it because everyone has their own opinion on the matter.

It's true... And I TRY to let it go that people like to watch movies "as entertainment" (which I like to do too... I mean... I LOVE 40 Year Old Virgin, but I'm not sure there's deep meaning in it)... What bothers ME is that while I'll leave them alone and just... ENJOY... They call me a SNOB for actually analyzing... And then scoff at the fact that I forum... WHAT CHOICE DO I HAVE?! :p *snicker*

LOL....sorry, I don't mean to NAG....;) But I don't think you will be sorry. I do think I made a big mistake when I watched the remake. We watched the original first (my husband had never seen it) then immediately watched the remake. That probably....colored....my opinion somewhat. Yeah, I would say that Blue Velvet is certainly his movie opus (I am a HUGE Twin Peaks fan), hands down (Eraserhead just... bothers me, though I'll have to catch it again, and Lost Highway was SO overrated). Mulholland Dr., however, really worked for me... I can definitely understand why people HATED it because I would say, in regards to Lynch's more recent films, this was the most self-conscious and indulgent at the same time... I felt, particularly toward the end, he was breaking down the fourth wall and nodding to the audience as if to say, "Yeah, that's right. I AM David Lynch," though honestly I feel he is also lampooning himself in a way and that I appreciate.
I always liked the film, but it wasn't until I went to L.A. and rented a truck and drove the WHOLE of Mulholland Dr. (from late afternoon into the dark of the evening) that I REALLY appreciated the film... L.A. is such a strange little town filled with quirks and contradictions (from the tack of the Strip to the ranches in the canyons), that I feel that he was almost trying to capture part of the feeling and abstract nature of L.A. and Hollywood itself in a film... And that, to me was brilliant.
But I digress...

No need to apologize... I just find it really REALLY funny (I'm a huge fan of repetition)... And BELIEVE ME, Jenna... you'll be the first to know when I actually see it.
...
But back to THE THREAD AT HAND
Today I worked from home and took FULL advantage of the Free movies that On Demand had to offer (I DID accomplish a lot workwise, though... I was keeping them on as... background noise... hee hee... I actually selected movies that I had already seen PURPOSEFULLY so that I wouldn't feel so bad having them in the background)...
Event Horizon (http://imdb.com/title/tt0119081/)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/10m-10.jpg
One of my favorite horror movies, hands down, I find Event Horizon was sadly overlooked when it came out.
Highlights:
It appeals both to my HORROR and geeky scifi sensibilities, and does so well. I appreciate the gritty vision of the crew, which is definitely a throwback to Alien.
It stars Sam Neil... My dear Dr. Grant. A wonderful villian.
The characters are genuine and LIKEABLE without being overly silly.
The "horror" aspects of the film REALLY get to me. The ship literally HAUNTS everyone, appealing to all of their weaknesses. The visions of memories fill me incredible horrified pathos. Brilliant.
The concept and brief depiction of infinite Hell... Absolutely horrifies me. Now, I'm not a religious person, by any means (I'm an Atheist), but the concept of infinite and ETERNAL suffering - that's just... horrifying. And this movie made me consider it for the first time. *shiver*
Haunted house brought to a ship. Again, very Alien, but done very well. Isolation and alienation was done INCREDIBLY well.
The bit that bothers me:
WHY would you make a ship with so many sharp points?!
Despite that, I love this movie. LOVE it. A-/A
...
The Craft (http://imdb.com/title/tt0115963/)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/10m-11.jpg
Wow. I haven't seen this movie since high school. What a fun little flick. Not to mention, it's refreshing to see witch movies that aren't silly. I think that it works as a witch/horror film as well as a teen high school movie. Toward the end, I feel pathos for their victims, and I actually feel THREAT from the avenging witches, which is actually pretty impressive. And, not to mention, Fairuza Balk is HELLA hot.
B/B+
...
The Wizard (http://imdb.com/title/tt0098663/)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/10m-12.jpg
PURE nostalgia. I hadn't seen this movie since my DAD took me when it was in the theater... :) And that was BEFORE Mario 3 came out (good marketing campaign for Nintendo).
WOW I had forgotten that Christian Slater was in that movie... I love the little random films that he's done.
But anyway... It's a fun little kids movie. Definitely appealed to me as a Nintendo junkie. Not sure if it withstood the test of time, BUT it was fun to revisit nonetheless.

I Am Legend
Let's get this out of the way, first. Yes, a new The Dark Night trailer was attached to it. And yes, we finally get to see how Heath fills The Joker's boots. I think he does a rather good job, from what was shown. In fact, my friend leaned over and asked me "Is that Jack Nicholson?" I found it hysterical, considering she isn't even aware that Jack Nicholson played The Joker before.
Now, the movie itself. I have not read I Am Legend, nor seen any of the numerous film versions. From what little I knew, I had assumed that this was your typical infection-kills-most-of-the-population / apocalypse / zombie flick. You have a main character (male) battling hordes of zombies with a rifle.
If your expecting this, and looking forward to this... you're going to be disappointed. Luckily, while I had assumed this, I wasn't really looking forward to it, and was pleasantly surprised by how different it ended up being.
Don't get me wrong, there are certainly elements of this type of film within I Am Legend. You have the main character, he does carry a gun, he does fight off "zombies", and there is an infection.
But this film is not about all that. It's about the man himself.
The story follows this one man; apparently the "last" man alive. We see him live his life, alone. The only companion being a faithful pet. He sets up mannequins in the town, interacting with them bit by bit, each day... trying to keep his sanity. He hunts, he fishes... not because he has to, but to pass the time. He borrows movies, watching films from A - Z, in order. He is part-way through the G's. He broadcasts a distress call, and he waits. When the darkness approaches, he retreats back to his house - never traveling back in the darkness itself. He has elaborate locks which he uses to secure himself. He sleeps, curled by his faithful pet, holding a gun. Until the daylight comes, and he repeats this process again. It's all he can do from going insane.
PS. I'm going to warn you now. It has a heartbreaking scene in it; most of the audience gave way to whimpers. I'll safely bet a few even shed a tear. It is exceptionally well executed, and is one of the staying points (for me.)
The film does have some exceptional scenes, which are simply dripping with atmosphere and dread. There were points in the film when you completely knew something was going to happen, something bad, and you sank down in your seat - waiting.
There are scenes which are very well set-up and delivered. The one that stands out the most being... (SPOILER... highlight to read.) when he accidentally gets caught in a trap; slips, hits his head, begins bleeding, and is hung by his foot... the puddle below him slowly turning red with his own fluids. He goes out of it, waking up only in time to hear his alarm going off, and the sky darkening. The blood will act as a calling signal for the creatures who feed on it, and he has nowhere to go... Or the scene where these creatures try lunging at him, as he barely crawls away with an injury. The only thing keeping him from being devoured is a thin strip of light, created by the side of a towering building, as the sun slowly sets. And it's setting fast.
One thing I thought especially well-done was the use of flashbacks; detailing the 'evacuation' when the infection first began spreading. One scene is delivered, split up into segments of 1-3 minutes, littered across the movie. The final flashback does not complete the scene, merely suggesting what happened, not showing it. It is quite powerful, the audience reacted strongly.
The ending was also well-done. I won't ruin it for you. So, that's all I'm going to say.
It's worth a watch, in my opinion. I'll be buying it when it comes out on DVD. It takes your infection story to a higher level. More a character study, a story about one man trying to live a life alone. Honestly, the relationship between the main character and his pet stole the film, for me.

Machined ~ interesting in concept, but suffered from a poor, often silly execution. Which would have been okay, if it would have at least been FUN, but it was quite possibly the most boring hour and half or so I have ever had to endure. I was actually falling asleep while watching. I Am Legend
Where to begin?
The good: Will Smith is excellent. His performance is nuanced and off-kilter and engaging - I was rather surprised. The first half of the film is a great character study with incredible visuals. Manhattan looks like a wonderfully realized version of what Washington D.C. was in the end of Logan's Run. The running time was refreshing as well, clocking in at 100 minutes, it is a brisk-paced film that never feels bloated.
The Bad: The third act came out of nowhere. The digi creatures looked no better than THE MUMMY and the story... It sure as shit isn't Matheson's I Am Legend.
For those not familiar with Matheson's source material it could be seen as a worthy entry into Last man on Earth, apocalyptic survival movie genre. To everyone else it will be a disappointment.
I liked some elements and truly appreciated the world in which the story takes place, but it fell a little flat for me.

The post-hype rating is B/B+ for I Am Legend.
I agree with Roderick that the creature effects were very poorly done. Everything looked far too cartoon-y, including the animals (rats, deer, and lions) within the world. The third act was also the weakest.
Perhaps the reason I enjoyed it so much is simply because I have not digested any previous I Am Legend material. Or the fact that I love character studies.

I loved I Am Legend. Never read anything about the source material and don't quite care that the creatures looked cartoonish because they are CG and you can't get priceless things. The city looked amazing because they most likely used the outline of it from real time and then added the CGI look after which is why that looks amazing and the creatures didn't because they were straight CG. I still liked it no matter what.

What I like about this holiday comedy is that it's a light film. It's not trying to be the next best thing. It's trying to be a comedy where, if you have a bad day, you can put this in for 90 minutes and make yourself feel better. And I like to watch these movies a lot. Don't get me wrong, I'm one for a serious drama. But, every now and then, I want a no-brainer movie. A movie where I'm going to have fun, and that's it. Another reason I like this movie is because I can relate to Chris (played by Ryan Reynolds). I'm always stuck in the friends zone. Girls see me as a sweet, charming, loving guy. And they also see me as "just a friend". I hate being that guy! They go out with jerks, then complain about not meeting a nice guy, yet I'm right there for them. I understand not wanting to lose a friend. But, what makes them think the relationship won't work out? Well, I don't want to get off onto a huge rant (a mini-rant will do just fine). So, I'll get back to the subject at hand. Just Friends is a light, fun film that you'll laugh at and just might relate to.

yeah, disease, i almost flipped when i heard about it. the only thing that interests me about it is that michael haneke himself is directing it, and it is a shot-by-shot remake of the original. his reasoning behind making an american version of the film (which i read in an interview) is that the point he was trying to make with the original (that violence as a form of entertainment has been taken for granted, and doesn't affect anyone in the way that it should) was an "american theme," which means that this is more of a problem in america than anywhere else.
i do agree with you though. the original stands alone and holds up extremely well after ten years.
we'll see how it turns out, i guess.

have you seen the original? if not, definitely check it out. it's extremely powerful and shockingly graphic (even though no violence is shown on-screen). the main point of the film (i'm talking about the original) isn't merely trying to make horrible thing seem more horrible because the ones committing it are enjoying it, although that definitely is a by-product of the film's execution. the real message is that violence in entertainment isn't portrayed and observed as it should be, or at least that's part of it.
here is a great (and really long) interview with michael haneke in which he touches on his motivations and explains in great detail the points/themes of the film:

Mixed opinion. I went in to it hoping to love it, and I came out of it liking it just a tad. It's not something I'd buy on DVD, or watch again anytime soon. Not to say it's bad. There were some things that just threw me off.
First off, the visuals. They worked, and they didn't work.
The whole thing feels like a staged production, as it should, because a grand majority of the film takes place within a single building. Upstairs we have Sweeney Todd's barber shop. Downstairs, Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pies shop, and below that, the room where both businesses meat (haw haw... such a pun.) There is of course a few scenes outside of this setting, but they can be counted on one hand.
The actual town is constructed largely using CGI. Some of the camera angles are constructed in pure CGI as well; such as an introductory scene in which the camera pans down numerous streets, twisting and turning. It felt like I was playing a videogame. Also, the very *first* scene, in which some scenery and the title is displayed, is purely CGI as well... and it shows. The audience laughed at how fake this whole thing looked.
While the film contains a satisfying amount of gore (most of it occurring in a montage, and the ending scenes...), some people might be thrown off at how animated the blood looks. I'm pretty sure some of the blood (if not all of it) was CGI. It's a very fake, fake, fake red. As if they were using a red fingerpaint. It doesn't look real, at all.
While all of the deaths occur the same way, it never gets tiring to see just how Tim Burton will chose to send the blood a sprayin'. It's sort of Kill Bill-ish in nature, just how much blood there is, and how violently it sprays out.
I thought the costumes and character designs and set designs were very well done. No complaints.
If you are not aware, this film is a musical. Most of the dialogue is given in song. After most musicals, you might find the audience bursting out of the doors singing their favourite tunes. Sweeney Todd isn't like that. It's a musical yes, but nothing in it is very catchy. Minus one or two songs. Most of it is sung dialogue exchange, rather then repetitious verses and choruses. It's hard to remember the lyrics in any song, so singing along is pretty impossible. I also found that Johnny Depp tended to "talk to the music" rather then "sing to the music"... some scenes had him just saying lines in a slightly different tone, set to music. But a few full-on lyrical sections disproved any rumour that he couldn't sing, he does rather well.
Johnny Depp is excellent as always, in the title role... but you know who really stole the show? No, not Sascha Baron Cohen (who was sporting a Borat-esque accent...) It was Helena Bonham Carter. She was just excellent. Excellent. She's probably the most lovable character in the film; has some of the best lines, best musical sequences, and humorous one-liners. You can't help but like her character. (The middle section contained a number of laugh-out-loud dark-humoured jokes.)
While he first half of the film was rather boring, I thought. Nothing too exciting happened, and the film tended to drag a little (while setting things up...), the closing act made up for this, two-fold. The middle section showed improvement, but the finale - blew me away. It was amazing, I thought. Everything within the film came together; yes, there are twists, and yes, there are shocks. Of course, they are a tad predictable... but they are still there, so that's what counts. It was a satisfying ending that ultimately made me like the film a whole grade higher.
I'd give it a B- / B.

I think this had a LOT less to do with it being CGI and a big budget film than it did with being a Tim Burton film. The almost cartoon-like visuals really fit his style and to be honest, knowing his films, I didn't expect gritty realism. Anyway, I loved the movie personally, thought it was better than any previous incarnation of the story.

Wow. A slasher film that predates Halloween by 4 years, it's amazing how much the iconic John Carpenter film borrowed from Black Christmas. From the eerie music to the first-person-killer point of view to the direction, it's obvious how much this movie has influenced the slasher genre.
I'm actually quite surprised how much this film does NOT come up in discussion of the every growing slasher mythos and tome... I found the themes, images, an archetypes fascinating that they might have originated here.
And besides from being a quality slasher film, it also touches on controversial topics at the time (1974), women's rights, freedom abortion - I thought that the movie examines the feminine differently than the usual slasher (that simply treats them as objects and victims).
An amazing slasher film and one that I will have to add to my Christmas movie list.

There was a scene where Local drug lord Lil' Ze went to exacts revenge on a gang of 9 and 10 year olds and forcing one of his own kid soldiers, to choose a kid from that little gang & kill. Faced with death, one of the kids starts crying and later on.. Lil' Ze shoot on the kid's foot!! 28 Days Later- I really like it. Great acting, and I love the character Selena. I love the flow and haunting emptiness of it, however, i think it's incredibly boring. It's thrilling and extremely well made, but it's so very boring. However, the climax at the military station wins the movie for me, because that is one of the best climaxes i've seen in a long time.

28 Weeks Later- I love it. I can say without question that it's significantly better than the original. I love the flow of it and the atmosphere, although the original does beat this one on atmosphere. This is one of the few films that actually scares me, and it really does. There are a good 5-6 moments in the film where I was biting my nails the first time I saw it. It does a perfect job of keeping me compelled to it, which is hard for an a.d.d. teenager ;) Great acting and sub plots as well.

Yeah... The looking exactly the same... Confused me... A lot.
I just... JUST saw this film this afternoon...
Honestly, I thought that the beginning of the movie was amazing. I thought that the director really created an atmosphere of alienation and desperation. I love everything that is post-apocalyptic, and I thought that the setting was incredibly chilling. I also liked the character of Neville and his relationship to Sam. I thought that Will Smith played a really great central character that was also flawed and had physical weakness.
The first half of the film was brilliant.
However, there is a specific turning point after which the film clearly went downhill very rapidly and the suddenly tacked on a ridiculously cheesey Hollywood ending. I am interested to see whether or not it holds true in the James Matheson original.
I give the movie a B/B+, also noting that some of my disappointment MIGHT have been spurred by the ASSHOLES to my right TALKING THROUGH THE WHOLE FILM (and when I asked them very politely to "Please be quiet," they were very rude).
I hate people.

Death Sentence
If you enjoy revenge flicks, this is definitely worth the watch. While the first half of the film is good itself, it's as if the film gets a stern kick in the ass while moving into the second (from the family threats, onward... although I'd classify "second half" as once he wakes up in the hospital... the events leading towards that are equally good, so I'm including them in my reference to the "second half.") I enjoyed the references to SAW (including a tweaked version of the twist-ending theme, and a graffitied Jigsaw puppet.) The gore, while mild throughout most of them movie, shines in the ending scenes. In one instance, a gunshot blows a hole clear through an enemy's chest, propelling him backward in a comic-book fashion. I expected it to end differently, and unlike Wan's other films, there is no twist presented in the final moments. Death Sentence comes recommended, if only for the last few scenes, to those who enjoy revenge flicks or similar material.
I also saw Shoot 'Em Up the other day. Boy, was that fun. As soon as it ended, I wanted to watch it again. It's the type of film you can just sit down with, and enjoy. Leave your brain on stand-by. While the budget is modest, this film is simply dripping with style. The script is exceptionally tight, running a mere 80 minutes in length, and never forgetting what it's main goal should be: keeping the action going, and going. There isn't even time to consider falling into boredom. The cast of characters are not only unique, but superbly acted by the likes of Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti. It's obvious they had fun while shooting this flick. Oh, and this film had me in more stitches then most films categorized as solely 'comedy.' If you're looking for a fun, adrenaline-filled, hilarious, dripping-with-cool film from 2007... you can't go wrong with Shoot 'Em Up.
Shoot Em Up.......see joshaube's comments
Resident Evil: Extinction....not bad...the best out of the three IMO

Sweeney Todd
I dig a good musical, but I've never been much of a fan of Sondheim. His motifs are just a little too repetitive and not quite grand enough for my taste, but he's a great story teller and Burton maximizes every element in what I feel is his 3rd best film (behind ED WOOD and SLEEPY HOLLOW). I really, really liked it. The acting was great, Depp should get the Oscar for his operatic performance and the rest of the players all play it to the hilt.
Set designs by Dante Faretti and costumes by Colleen Atwood make the world sumptuous and lived-in and the directing... top notch. Burton has got his groove back. The storytelling is efficient and beautiful and the gore is wonderfully over-the-top.
If you dig musicals and horror, this is a must see theater experience. If you don't like musicals this one probably still won't win you over, as I found the music to be the weakest element of the film.

Glue. I don't know what to write. A spanish language film chronicling the life of a teenage boy in a small town. There is no "traditional" beginning, middle or end. There is no sequence of events leading up to a climax and resolution. The film begins and the films ends, but not at any significant point. It merely does so. It consists of numerous moments, some seperated by mere minutes, and others by days or weeks. Essentially it's a coming of age story.
So we got a massive amount of snow overnight (which is still continuing, and not slowing down...) and I'm pretty sure all my plans for tonight have been canceled. I for one am not digging out my vehicle and shoveling an endless driveway just to get on the roads (which aren't plowed anyway... hurrah for living outside the city limits!) Coming home would be hell, as you'd not only have drunks, but drunks on bad roads. Ouch.
I'll probably catch some films tonight, then.

So, I'm snowed in... taking this opportunity to have a mini-marathon. All of the films I have selected share a common theme: direct-to-DVD (and from 2006/7.) Unlike most, I really dig these films. There's just a certain charm to them.
First up, Storm Warning. It's absolutely nothing new, nothing original. It's a re-hash of the "couple gets lost, encounters a group of hillbillies, insults them, the hillbillies start playing sick games with the couple, torture ensues, then the couple fights back..." storyline. Nothing new at all. We've seen it a million times, and we'll see it again. It wasn't even the best incarnation of this storyline... but you know what? I liked it. I guess it's trying to be a rough adaptation of Goldilocks? That's what some comments on IMDb led me to believe, and there is even a direct reference within the film's dialogue. The film tries to be shocking. When the hillbillies start torturing the couple, they pull of the male's towel, and force the wife to strip. It was sort of like that hotel scene in The Devil's Rejects - or at least I think that's what the director was attempting. Something that makes you sort of... uncomfortable. Well, this whole film really seemed to be wanting to shock you, to make you uncomfortable... but it was mild. Really mild, I thought. I've seen worse in many other films, so what I did see here didn't really effect me. They should have turned it up a few notches. They can't use the ratings-held-us-back excuse, since this is direct-to-dvd, and therefore exempt from classification. There was two good scenes of gore, one involving a trap which was rather elaborate.
Timber Falls is up next.

I am Legend.
I ve stopped having expectations for any movie, so I went to watch this with an open mind, which helps me enjoy a movie without getting too technically involved in it.
First off, Will Smith. The guy tries his hardest to be The Lone Ranger of the post-Apocalyptic world, yet falls several metres short of Vincent Price in an all-too similar role about 40 years back.
The premise is great, and the narration and direction are really tight. The setting of crowded New York gone totally people-less, and Will Smith's desolate wandering was the highlight.
What the movie lacked, was substance. It all seemed bleak in the end, especially after the infected started pouring onto the screen. Somehow unintelligent nocturnal creatures (grossly reminding of 28 Days characters) didnt fit the entirety. The climax seemed hasty too, but it was a decent ending.
What could have been a real amazing movie experience, turned out to be only a decent watch.

adaptation.- 8.5/10 or so
such an effing great script. it's totally meta and serious, yet really playful and humorous. again, spike jonze flawlessly translates kaufman's ideas to the screen. great performances all around too, which is especially meaningful here having not only one, but two nicholas cages.

8.5/10
agreed.
i was so happy to be impressed with this one, since even though i was excited about it, i had a feeling it was going to disappoint.
burton is definitely back in his groove.
