I'm jealous! I would have loved to see it on the big screen again. I remember seeing it when it came out, and LOVED it!
I may have to interrupt the HP marathon to watch Jaws. :)
Hey, that's great! I went to see it when it first came out too! Sat through two showings, back in the days when they didn't clear the house between shows. Ah, 1975.

A few theaters around here show it every year although I did see it at the Drive In sometime in Spring. I preferred it at the Drive In. The theater you get people laughing at the Special Effects and that does irk me as it's still a movie that back in the day was pretty scary. I was born in 75 but I will always remember my Mom taking me to see it in 3D and it was my fave scary movie ever since. No need for CGI, rogue murderous sharks will always be scary!
I also watched Shark Night to keep the Shark theme going. What has everyone else thought of Shark Night. I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it.

So surprised to hear that people were laughing at the special effects in Jaws. When I went last month, the crowd was totally sold on all aspects of the film, including the effects. It was exhilirating to watch Jaws hit every intended note with a big audience.
I like Shark Night. I'm a Donal Logue fan and a Sara Paxton fan as well. Shark Night had some decent FX and a pretty weak script, so overall it's a fun watch. I do know some people who HATE it, and they have pretty valid reasons, but for me, it's bloody, has sharks and some talent I like, so thats enough to keep me interested.

Yes it has happened twice at the theater, the annoying laughter of morons. 1 lady behind me I turned around and gave her a death look and she stopped thankfully.
People still jump on the boat scene where the corpse comes out of the hull at night. I love that about Jaws, it still scares people and can make you jump. Shark Night to me was definitely a fun watch. I loved they had a variety of sharks rather than just settling for Bull Sharks or Great Whites. Kudos for some originality

Just watched Pumpkinhead a few nights ago. I liked how it went a little deeper than most typical "get revenge" films in that the prospect of seeking vengeance could potentially destroy oneself. At least, that's how I saw it. Overall, though, I thought it was very decent. ^-^

One of mine as well. Pumpkinhead is a seriously cool monster design and the way they light and frame him, wow! It's good storytelling and a very believable legend. Not To mention, there is a lot of Lance in this movie, and that ALMOST always elevates a film.

A lot of "same-old, same-old". Worked at a jobsite in Aberdeen, Maryland for about 8 months. Now back in the office bored out of my mind. Had to have one of my cats put to sleep the other day. She had lost a ton of weight very quickly, come to find out her stomach was filled with tumors. Couldn't imagine watching her suffer a horrible, painful death. That's about it. Going to see The Gallows tonight!

'Frogs' (1972)
-Sam Elliot, Ray Milliand, Joan Van Ark
Plot: IMDB
Jason Crockett is an aging, grumpy, physically disabled millionaire who invites his family to his island estate for his birthday celebration. Pickett Smith is a free-lance photographer who is doing a pollution layout for an ecology magazine. Jason Crockett hates nature, poisoning anything that crawls on his property. On the night of his birthday the frogs and other members of nature begin to pay Crockett back.
Phantom's Review: One of many "Nature Strikes Back" films that came out in the '70's. The acting is quite good, considering what the plot is and what the actors had to work with. The film is wonderfully shot, but ultimately it's just a schlocky, low budget horror film that isn't the least bit scary. The film can be entertaining if your in the right frame of mind or just want to revisit the glory days of the '70's.

That's not fun to hear. I know everyone has bad days but when you're selling something to a person, signature or otherwise, and you're being handed money, it's nice if you can be polite about it.
My only unpleasant horror celeb experience was Danielle Harris. She was really rude to almost everyone in line ahead of us, so we split before we even got to her table. I can't stand that kind of stuff.

Damn that's about my biggest fear right there. If I met someone who made one of my horror icons so legendary and they turned out to be a complete asshole... I think it'd break my heart. People expect that kind of behavior out of horror fans because of our ''morbid interests'', but it's just not the case. And when that kind of shit happens it makes us look bad. 8(

MONKEY SHINES (1988). This seems to get little love or respect from the general public or even Romero fans, but I think it's quite good with some great (not gory) Savini FX and it's pretty suspenseful towards the end, even if a little trimming would have been judicious. ****

Frogs
I know the title alone will probably turn at least two of you away. Continue at your own risk. ::smile::
::SPOILER HEAVY:: (I don't know how to review so read my rambles while I watch it)
So many adorable frogs. I can't wait to see how they'll kill people.
*half an hour of movie in*
OOOOOOH MY GOD SOMEONE ELSE NEEDS TO DIE ALREADY. They found ONE body and it wasn't even a big deal. Didn't even look messed up. Could've fell and broke his neck for all anyone knows.
And there's so many frog shots. I'm starting to hear voices when we see them. They get about as much screen time as the actors without even saying a damn thing.
17812
FINALLY! Our first kill. And it's dumb as fuck. The guy's leg randomly gets a hole in it, then for some reason is attacked by moss and tarantulas... And there was also a scorpion... Are those arachnids even IN the south? The guy's leg gets disabled yet he can't crush the creatures with his hands... I guess once you lose a leg you lose the ability to use your brain too.
Second guy goes via lizards. I keep random jars of poison in my greenhouse, don't you?
The third is giving me snakes on a plane flashbacks. ...This movie is about killer FROGS right? I mean they did only name the movie after them.
Fourth goes by gators. After he mud wrestles with them for a little bit that is. I'm convinced at this point that the frogs are the masterminds behind all this, and therefore the big finale. I hope they go for the stupid grandfather.
...I think the fifth was water snakes but the best is certainly the sixth via snapping turtle. That's what you get for being stupid enough to go in the water.
"Where are Mommy and Daddy?" Well kids let's just say you qualify to be a superhero now.
Funny how the treehugger was the only one smart enough to actually hit back when nature attacked. ::roll eyes::
Called the ending. I still say the frogs organized everything. Clever bastards. Otherwise their whole purpose of the film was to annoy their victims to death and hop menacingly.
If you want a dumb horror movie to watch for the 4th of July, go right ahead and stick in Frogs. Make sure to stick around for ALL the credits.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/42/Eatenaliveposter.jpg
Directer Tobe Hooper's follow up to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre where the proprietor of a creepy hotel murders people and feeds them to his pet crocodile that he keeps in the swamp beside his porch. The use of lighting, camera angles and eerie score all effectively enhance the atmosphere and there is lots of brutal gore throughout. Neville Brand gives a convincing performance as the disturbed hotel owner Judd and he's also pretty menacing brandishing that scythe. There's also an appearance from horror alum Robert Englund who I don't think I've ever seen so young. A classic that's definitely worth checking out.

This is a really gritty little film. I agree, it is a classic. Lots of great horror alumni (Brand, Englund, Carolyn Jones, Marilyn Burns, William Finley, Janus Blythe) and a bizarre plot that is very loosely based on a true case. One of Hooper's best!

Englund couldn't have been a day older than 22 when he did this role. A few theaters in Austin used to play this as a double feature with Texas Chainsaw back in the early 80's.

Watched Slithis (aka Spawn of the Slithis, 1977) again last night. Anyone who likes cheapo eco-horror with aquatic mutant beasties will love this movie. I know I do. Some of the most bizarre performances I've ever seen in this type of flick and a few scenes and characters (Seductive boat owning Romeo??? Insanely over the top lieutenant???) that stand out because they are hilariously bad.
Not for all audiences, but if you dig that 1970's drive-in super crap as much as I do, Slithis is a must see.

COUNT DRACULA (1977). Although there are some liberties taken with source material, this BBC presentation is pretty damn good with atmosphere and spooky scenes. If nothing else, it's probably THE most faithful version of Stoker's novel.
I think the only way you could really give DRACULA the full fledged treatment would be to have it in installments like THE LORD OF THE RINGS films...perhaps Peter Jackson could try it and erase the memory of his well intentioned but lacking KING KONG. ****

'Nate And Hayes'(1983)
-Tommy Lee Jones
Plot: IMDB
A swashbuckling adventure which takes place in the mid-1800's on the South Pacific islands where bloody raids and battles were once the rule of the day.
Phantom's Review:
To kick off my 'International Talk Like A Pirate Day' week (Sept 19) , I chose this little known, but highly entertaining swashbuckler. A young Tommy Lee Jones plays the pirate captain "Bully" Hayes, who gets himself and his crew in a series of adventures while trying to rescue a beautiful young lady. Plenty of action, great cinematography, a rousing music score (London Symphony Orchestra) and some fine acting. The film has a "Indiana Jones" type of vibe to it, but on a lower budget. If you like high seas adventure films, I think you'll like "Nate And Hayes" I know I did. Ahoy!

The last 80s movie I watched was Children of the Corn. A disturbing premise, for sure, but it's definitely one of those movies that doesn't have the same impact after you put it down for so long. Especially when you recognize the face of Sarah Connor in all her Terminator 2 badassery, it's a bit surreal to see her in the role of damsel in distress again. Plus, realizing that the actor who played Isaac was actually in his mid-20s at the time takes away a bit of the horror. Still a classic, though. Love it.

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Self-proclaimed as "the most controversial film ever made" and often credited to creating the found footage genre, Cannibal Holocaust has a huge reputation to uphold, but brutal, sometimes unnecessary violence mixed with a relevant social commentary leave mixed results. Cannibal Holocaust follows an anthropologist traveling to the Amazon to find a missing documentary crew that were sent to film the cannibalistic tribes who lived in the jungles. After finding the lost footage, a news channel intends to broadcast the footage, and we are shown the grisly demise of the team. It's often referred to as one of the most disturbing movies of all time, and it certainly makes you feel a little dirty watching it. The torture and rape displayed by the indigenous tribe is just as shocking as the behavior the documentary team shows towards the tribe, so there's really nothing pleasant to watch in this film. One of the more famous lines in the movie asks who the savages really are: the cannibalistic tribe or the documentary crew. It presents some thought-provoking stuff, but it's so hard to ponder those themes when your senses are being assaulted by the graphic nature of this film. The social commentary in Cannibal Holocaust and the reputation itself makes this a must-watch for fans of extreme cinema; just don't try to watch this for entertainment.

Well said.
I watched it and gave my copy away the next day. That's not to say I think the film wasn't effective. It was, and the themes and messages presented were not only provocative when the film was made, but they are still valid and compelling today. I just knew that whatever I was to take from this movie, I had already taken in the first viewing, and no rewatch would have unearthed any new revelations. There is no subtlety in this film, so a rewatch to me would have been pointless. To my mind,The filmmakers succeded, but It's a flick I dont need on my shelf.

A Blade in the Dark (1983)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6e/A_Blade_in_the_Dark_poster.jpg
One of the classics. The italian directors in the 70s & 80s made brilliantly unique movies with rather low budget. Lamberto Bava of course known as the son of the great Mario Bava.
The movie builds a very thrilling atmosphere with simple means and with some true 80s gore scenes. (The blade through the hand -scene being the most impressive and a few more clumsy but loveable 80s style scenes). Music & acting is top notch for all factors considered. Especially the scenes with piano music.
The plot holds more than you first think.
Very solid movie and a must watch for italo-horror lovers.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre
I see why Repo'd likes this for background noise (if I remember correctly). Lots of lovely ambient horror sounds. Great screams and chainsaw noises are so nice.
Bothered by a few things that seem obviously silly. Trucker and survivor running out of the truck rather than staying in it and driving away being one... He couldn't get through the door so they were safer in the truck than running away. Speaking of why the hell did the trucker keep running rather than run to the safety of the car with the girl? And only one person is actually killed with the chainsaw, so the title shouldn't have surrounded it so much. It was rather disappointing.
Other than that though I can really see why so many consider it a classic. I would certainly add it to my list. The family was so fucked up and amusing, great plot twist that was. Effects and scenery were eerie and perfect. And I wish I could hire them to decorate my home. That furniture was absolutely fantastic. (may or may not already have bone wind chimes)

I do love the sound of TCM! True, I love everything about that movie but the sound design is one of the things that stands out. The scene with Sally pushing Franklin through the bramble in his wheelchair makes you feel like you are moving through the dark with them. It's brilliant. And then, the almost silent night is ripped apart by the sound of Leatherfaces roaring chainsaw..holy crap, I'm hyperventilating just thinking about it.
The furniture and sets were created by the amazing Robert Burns, who also worked on The Hills have Eyes, Tourist Trap, The Howling, Re-Animator and a slew of other stuff. He was an inspired artist. One of my prize possessions is an autographed photo of the gentleman, whom I was lucky enough to meet somewhere around 2001. That guy was great. RIP, MAN!
As for your RIDICULOUS concerns about what the driver did at the end of the movie...::big grin:: I'm kidding, of course. Yeah, it's natural to question the stupid things that people do. I do it in real life every day and I'm always baffled. However, I would allow for a certain amount of poor decision making when a person is faced with a possible death situation. I've seen people panic and do moronic things in stressful or dangerous moments. I think that when it comes to horror films, and the inevitable "why the hell would they do that?" question, I just say, "hey, they were scared". Knowing a little bit about human nature, I think that will suffice.
Glad you watched the flick, Roi! The Saw Is Family!!

Oh wow... I'm not entirely sure... I've been into them for so long. I remember the first one I bought myself was Cursed, pre-owned for $3 (I've since added over 30 titles to my collection). I was probably 11 or 12 at the time when I started really getting into lycanthropes. I had gotten into Harry Potter as most of my generation had, and I read Prisoner of Azkaban with its werewolf character. It's been a bit of a sickness ever since. I remember around that time being obsessed with Underworld and Van Helsing before having binged the classics online. I don't recall which I saw first though I'm afraid. My dad was a monster movie nut when he was young, and although he isn't into them near as much anymore, he still collects an occasional classic, so I remember watching a few with him.

I feel a more appropriate question in this case would be "what did I like about it?" Not because I have an issue with you asking, just because there are so many things about the movie that I disliked, I feel I could give a much more brief answer saying what I did like. So I will answer that...I liked what acting there was. I felt that given the situations these people were supposed to be performing in and the actions they were meant to be portraying, they did a great job. I kept thinking the whole time through the movie, "I hope these people got paid enough for this."
As for if you haven't seen it and would like to, www.shudder.com is a great place. I believe they still offer a two week trial. :o

So happy that you liked it! I've been fascinated by Close Encounters forever. So many wonderful moments and I love the energy of the film. Watching it, I feel like a wide eyed kid again.

Absolutely! A film that awes. Unfortunately, not many of them.

Dune (1984)
6/10
Exquisite set/costume design and music. Very intriguing start to story, but shortly after reaching planet Dune, seems to haste to conclusion, becoming more drudging & confusing, or otherwise purposeless, as it proceeds.
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
6/10
Some horribly simple dialogue, poor amateur acting and repetitive plodding scenes. Still, the two sibling leads carry the film with heart. Most of the revenge kills are imaginative & shot well; and has a gutsy twist ending.
Urban Cowboy (1980)
6.5/10
Interesting and mildly engaging romantic relationship film. It's shot, paced & acted well. But in many ways, even the happy ending is rather bleak.

House (1986)
Cheesy 80s horror comedy, kinda plays like a Disney movie. Billed as a haunted house flick, but really more of a creature feature, and a very rubbery one at that. I don't think I would ever watch it again (except maybe with my kids), but I can't fault it too much because it's actually pretty entertaining.
Watched on Screambox.

Check out Jodoworsky's Dune. I saw it recently, and found it very interesting.
