I watched The Fall (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460791/) today.

http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjAzODUwMjM1M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjU2MjU2MQ@@._ V1._SX86_SY140_.jpg

This movie was filmed over a period of 4 years in 18 different countries and let me tell you - It was beautiful. Gorgeous. Breath-taking (I'm not lying here. There was a single scene shot in the Dragon's Backbone rice terraces in China and my jaw just dropped open).

The visuals are absolutely stunning. The main theme takes place in 1920s Los Angeles. Lee Pace (of Pushing Daisies) plays a patient in a hospital who spins an epic yarn for a little girl.

While this film was GORGEOUS, I thought that it was a little uneven. You have your typical allegory - the epic tale is a metaphor for the "reality" surrounding the narrator (generally an unreliable one) and the audience. I thought that the breaking of the fourth wall was self conscious and forced at times and, while I LOVE Lee Pace, I thought that he struggled a bit as his own mirror character in the fairy tale.

I spent a lot of the movie thinking, "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen did it better."

That being said, I absolutely recommend this film. It goes a little long, but it's highly enjoyable. I also know that I tend to be over-critical, so I guarantee that this will most likely be enjoyed by all. I'm always looking for updated fairy tales (like the above mentioned Munchausen, Time Bandits, MirrorMask, Dark Crystal, etc.), and this was fun to watch.

"The Deaths of Ian Stone" 7/10

This flick made me think of both The Matrix and Dark City.

With a story like that it would take something special to come up with an ending to save this far out horror movie. Sadly enough it didn't manage to do so and because of that TDOIS fell down flat on its ass.

Conclusion: First half was very good, last half wasn't.

I must admit i saw/feared it coming early on in the movie. It just felt WAY too ambitious for a horror movie. Sure would've been awsome if they'd pulled out a "Dark city" ending tho... oh well.. :(

Much maligned movie that I think has more merits than flaws. it was "over studioed", the script was through more rewrites than i have ever heard of, and they really settled on something no one was happy with, but the cast was solid, the atmosphere was good, and David Fincher is a damn fine filmmaker.

Actually, I was a bit skeptical about this one after the Coen's incredibly excellent No Country For Old Men, and thought it would take itself way too seriously.

Trying out tacky humor was a bit of a diversion, specially after the way their last one went. But now, I am reassured. Definitely gonna catch this one asap.

And, do you mean Ladykillers as in the original, or the remake? I thought the remake was a largely hit-and-miss movie. I didnt like it that much.

Karate kid anno 2008. More brutal and uses ultimate fighting instead of Karate. Clever. And it has a very well casted hero, "heroine" and bad guy.

This movie could easily become the Karate Kid of it's decade, especially thanks to its Ultimate Fighting, which seems to be the last years hippest martial arts form.
That being said, it sure lacks the charm of the K Kid and the much later "Showdown" (2003), which i believe i've seen about 8 times now. NBD will probably be a 1 time view for me.

How could this one not get an Oscar for either Best camera work or Best scenery? I'm sure there's a catagory for both.

I believe the big question on most viewers minds are: Is the girl really acting or is she just reading her lines out loud without understanding a word she's saying?... But she sure is cute.

I don't know exactly what to think of the story itself. I guess what i feel is that the story in the story could have been executed much much better. The grand sceneries deserved more. A lot more.

Wow...this was everything that I was expecting and SO much more. Easily one of Price's best movies, no question - he's dark, brooding, suave and exudes such charm that you can't help but fall in love with his character - even though he's a VERY difficult man to like. A truly masterful performance.

Even though Price stole the show, that's not to take away from the rest of the cast: Gene Tierney is gorgeous and more holds her own against Price's Van Ryn, and Walter Huston give a superb supporting performance as her ultra-religious father.

It's really more of a Gothic drama/romance than a horror flick, but I still think a lot of you guys would love it - Alky, _V_, Fortunato, Neverending - if you guys haven't seen this one, you're really missing out.

But then again, gary Busey is WAY more batshit.

The one thing i never understood, especially now that I am the father fo a girl:
Gary Busey's character was old enough to have been Special Forces in Vietnam, which even by the 80s would put him in his 30s...

Danny Glover's daughter was still in high school...

Why wasnt Gary Busey dead with 6 shotys in the head before the movie started? I would murder any 30+ (hell, 20+) year old man trying to date my high-school aged daughter. And Its not like he LOOKED young, its gary busey, he's looked 40 since he was 20.

Some nice, intense action in that one. If you want to put yourself through some truly weak Jack Ryan, watch The Sum of All Fears

The movie was pretty not great, but it was one of Affleck's better roles. Just when I'm convinced he is completely without merit, he does something like Sum or Changing Lanes and I am forced to reevaluate him. He is only mostly terrible.

If it comes on T.V I will watch it. But I'm not going to hunt it down, I'm no huge Afleck fan myself. You say changing lanes is good?

Tell me about it..

I nearly got dragged to the cinema to see it, managed to only have to watch it on dvd....

It was a sacrifice, one you make when you love some one, that is how I describe just the aspect of going to watch it in the first place.

The actual movie, we both thought it was shit, though we never switched it off, but no one knows why???

I didn't think it was very well acted, and I think the blame for that lays with the Producers and the directors.

"The Westerner" (1940)

-Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan

A saddle tramp rides into a range war between cattleman. led by Judge Roy Bean, and crop raising homesteaders.

Highly entertaining 1940's western. Good amount of action and well written characters, with a surprising amount of humor.I enjoyed this film.

IT WASN'T FUNNY!!!!

Described on IMDB as the best comedy coming out of 2006.

So from that point of view it was disappointing as hell.

Besides, I really didn't think the story was very interesting.

Had no problem with the characters/cast tho. Thought especially Steve Carell did a good job. Nice to see him in a serious role.

Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo.

Better than the previous one of the series. Plenty of entertaining moments from the beginning (***MINOR SPOILER***) including the cars romancing, while prancing between the trees, and the (whoa!) ending. Has its share of flaws but still, a fun ride.

Mirrors (2008)

Inspired by the Korean Horror thriller Into the Mirror and surely which has much simpler & interesting plot, even better creepy moments than this one. In compare to the Korean original, they just screwed the whole story. Aja highly disappoints me this time.

I'm sorry fanboys, but this was only mildly amusing. It was also indulgent and about 45 minutes too long.

The Insider.

This could be the best movie of the 90s, IMO. Superbly paced and directed, and with awesomely good performances by Pacino and Crowe. In case of Crowe, his portrayal completely blows away any sort of accolades he got for Gladiator...man, just check him out in this one. The supporting cast is great too, with Colm Feore (brilliance personified) & Chris Plummer leading the pack.

If you ever have a choice to watch any ONE movie in your entire life, watch this. You will be left gasping for air when the end credits start rolling.

I give this one a HUGE rec. Watch it. A-S-A-P.
