Day of the Dead
It's been way too long since I watched a zombie movie...and this is one of the best, hands down. Not quite on par with Night of course, but I personally think it's head-and-shoulders above Dawn.
Great characters, and some awesome additions to the zombie mythos - an all-time favourite to be sure.

From the "so bad it's good" category..."The Thing With Two Heads" .
from the "just not very good" category..."Mirrors".
from the "funnier than I thought it would be" category..."How to Lose Friends & Alienate People"
Simon Pegg would not be the first name to come to mind when thinking Romantic Comedy.....but he's very good in this.

Give him two lips like roses and clover,
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over.
Sandman, I'm so alone,

Please turn on your magic beam,

A mean-spirited, but well crafted little thriller. There's nothing earth-shattering about it, but it is well directed and well acted (which instantly sets it above most films, let alone horror films) and the characters are truly frightening. It isn't a fun film, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the director will do next.

I had no grounding at all for the film, never read the comic or really had little clue what it was even about. It certainly was a heavier film then I expected, and while it's not much praise I do think I can say it's Snyder's best work thus far. His over direction worked surprisingly well in most of the action scenes as well as deliverying very stong scenes concertrating on fewer characters at a time.
The acting is all very solid with som characters very capably breaking the cliche molds that tend to surrond "Super" films.
I am pretty sure I liked it, but it was so very far from what I was expecting its hard to be really firm about it.

it's the polar opposite to a superhero film.
i havent seen it yet but from what i've heard it follows the comic closely.
from what i've seen - entire scenes are lifted directly from the pages and put onto film.

No idea what role - I'll probably try out for Billy Bibbit, if he isn't pre-cast. Pretty much the only part in my age bracket, sadly.
The main community theatre company around here is putting it on as their final mainstage show in a few months...they haven't released the audition details yet though, so I have no idea what parts they'll be casting for. Still - no matter what roles are availible, you can damn well bet I wouldn't miss the chance.

Dante 01 (2008)
http://www.eyeforfilm.co.uk/images/stills/d/dante_01_2008_poster.jpg
Set in the future, where criminals are packed off to outer space, recounts the mishaps of six dangerous criminals locked in a prison on Dante, a hostile planet with a toxic atmosphere. As guinea pigs of strange experiences, the six try to escape under the direction of psychopath Cesar, who battles for leadership with St Georges, an inmate gifted with mysterious powers.
The story looks promising at the first half but the end screwed the whole impression.

Not sure how many of you have seen this, but this is a kickass flick. Pretty similar to Dog Soldiers or even Deathwatch but on a smaller scale, budget-wise.
What makes this flick stand out is the outstanding direction and script, backed by some really solid performances and beautiful cinematography, which creates a lot of wonderful atmosphere - especially in the second half. The ending is a bit of a letdown (**MINOR SPOILERS**) with no explanations or background given to explain for the actions of the antagonist , but overall its gritty, solid and nifty.
I really liked it and would love to recommend this to all my friends here in HDC. Watch the ending with a very open mind though.

I agree, Haley was a perfect Rorschach and an even better Walter Kovacs. The prison scenes were mint. Over all, as a comic fan, I was impressed by what I saw. The first half of the movie was panel perfect. I loved all the characters and the acting was great. I don't know where they got the guy who played Dan but he was amazing (might be the fact that he was a favourite of mine in the comic though).
The only things I would complain about were related to them changing the ending. I think that Rorschach's efforts to research the Mask Killer theory are more founded and much more bad ass in the comic. He had other leads, like missing people, a mysterious island and another hero getting killed. That's my only gripe. That said, the new ending is more coherent.
I loved the soundtrack with the exclusion of MCR's Desolation Row. They really should have kept with the plan of not using music made after the 80's

The casting certainly does deserve praise. Haley was great and his raspy voice (unlike some Christian Bale named actors) was spot on. Crudup, was subtle and convincing. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, dark, sardonic, scary yet charasmatic, fantastic in all his different time frame appearances.
Funnily enough the actor that played Nite Owl, was Raoul in the new Phantom of the Opera... where he failed to be the least bit charming. He was more charming as a kind of awkward geeky recluse.

It all makes sense now! My boyfriend loves The Phantom of the Opera and we watched it. I told him how much Raoul reminded me of him. Then read the Watchmen and told him that the Niteowl reminded me of him (not a certain couch scene, just in personality) and then Niteowl in the movie looks just like him but he thinks my crush is unfounded. the legend of the seven golden vampires
I used to have that on VHS (taped if off the TV) but I always thought it was called Curse of the Seven Golden Vampires.
Was it released under different titles or did I just remember wrong? Very enjoyable film though, defo worth a purchase.
Red Sands
Surprisingly decent horror/thriller, quite slow where not much seems to happen but the tension and paranoia is well built. Let down by some dodgy cgi right at the end.

Rachel fitted in with the tone of the first two films.
This role needed a bit more of the womanish, motherly side of Evie and I thought Maria Bello did a good job with maintaining the balance of being a mother of a full grown Alex plus the wife of Rick. Don't think Rachel would have pulled this role off like the previous 2.
I really wish they stop with this one though. Seems like they are running out of ideas (well, this is a very campy franchise in the first place anyway), and its better to stop while being slightly ahead than going downhill to the point of absurdity.

The Watchmen - Thought it was amazing. That night went and read the graphic novel and they definitely kept it true unlike Wanted. Even if you're not a comic book fan, which I am certianly not, I'd recommend this.
Eastern Promises - Not as good as I expected but not bad by any means.
Harold And Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay - Meh. First one was alot funnier.
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas - Trippy shit. Depp delivered like he always does.
Mirrors - Shit. I wish Hollywood would stop with the awful Japenese horror remakes.

I don't know what to say...it was a peculiar plot! Started almost like When a Stranger Calls but an unpredictable twist at midway turns the movie into entirely a different direction...the movie veers into a supernatural angle and then comes torture & cannibalism parts with high content of gore & flesh and finally ends like a survival horror flick that also left room for sequels too. [:D ]
Overall, I'd say it was a nice fun ride indeed. Keep an open mind before going to watch it...you'd either like it a lot or may throw the dvd out of your collection.;)

In Cold Blod was always wierd to me, becasue my family is from Garden City, Ks and my dad knew the Clutter family. My family was never fond of "that little faggot" as my grandpa would call Capote. They didn't like how he made the killers seem like humans.

Låt den rätte komma in (Let the Right One In) (2008)
This is not a horror movie. It is not a vampire movie. At least, neither of those are the defining words I'd use to describe the essence of the film. It's about the mess of adolescence. It's an against-the-odds love story. It's about surviving in this world, doing what must be done. All classic, timeless templates, only in this instance told against a unique backdrop. See, then maybe it's a vampire film, or a horror film.
It is slow, sad, dark, and cold, punctuated by both harshness and happiness, the dynamics of a haunting melody. It is blurry and distant, until Eli and Oskar, the two main characters, come together. Their interactions are close and intimate.
The performances of the two main kids are remarkable, fully consumed by not only their roles, but by the world created in the film. Especially Lina Leandersson, who plays Eli (the vampire), truly looks far older than her years.
The Dalai Lama once talked about every person being the center of his or her respective universe, and we get that in Oskar and Eli's world. From their prospective, together they create one universe, trying to omit the extraneous, not caring to question each other beyond traditional childish things. And that's really what it comes down to with this film.
Any complaints I may have had were rendered negligible by the end. I mean that in two ways: by the end of the film, I no longer cared about those parts; and by the way the film ended, I no longer cared about those parts. (Possible SPOILER) The finale is truly the most virtuosic part about the film, we finally get to see Oskar and Eli trim all the excess from their universe.
All in all, it's a truly wonderful film; one of the very best of 2008.
The Baby's Room.....[neverending take note]. Its on the Fearnet channel ands its pretty damn good. Its part of a series like Eight Films to Die For, only in Spanish. Reading is required.

I really enjoyed it, but it still works infinitely on the page. The film seemed seemed torn between the plot and the characters: neither element had nearly enough room to grow.
My main gripe was Veidt/Ozymandias (Spoilers): The great debate of the novel's ending was whether or not Veidt was good or evil. This portrayal paints him WAY too flat: he's a bad guy with good intentions. Period. I blame this equally on the script and the actor, who never really made him seem charming (or human) in any way.
Still...I did really enjoy the majority of it. Great story, perfect cast, and the overall look was dead-on.

I'd like to just mention that I found the plot obscenely offensive and misguided. The film made me angry to the point that my hands trembled. The acting is fine, though the direction I didn't think was anything beyond par. It simply reeked of misguided intentions and from my point of view an utter void of any understanding of S and M.
Right down to the final soft scene being an extremely campy soft tender one.

I have to agree with Az on this one. I watched Secretary and I was so incredibly offended, I barely made it through the film.
I feel as though the controversial issues of self-harm and sadomasochistic sexuality were paraded before the audience strictly to be risque, but didn't serve as an actual representation of the demographic. I felt as though the portrayal of self-harm and S&M were presented in terms of what someone thinks these traits should be, but not how they actually are.
I don't think that the writer/directors had any understanding of self-mutilation issues and I feel as though it was incredibly dumbed down for the sake of being controversial.
Same with the sadomasochism.

Perhaps it is intended for the yuppy who wishes to be full S and M yet thinks this is such a hight they are reaching without knowing they themselfs are missing the point. Not everyone is aware of the truth in certain circumstances or subcultures. This is probably as far as the imagination of people similar to the characters stretches. In which case would make it a true representation.

For one, you have to look beyond the S&M portrayal on-screen and delve a bit into the background of both characters - their mentality, thinking, emotions, intelligence and fetishes.
What we have here, are two very complex characters who stand out in a crowd not because of their identities, but because of their unique personalities. The first 15-odd minutes give a perfect insight into the first character, and the last 20 show us the other side of the second character. Both of them on the brink of an emotional abyss, and looking to stretch/attach themselves to anything they can find solace in. Its a perfect take for any one of us in today's world, and to deny it would be like avoiding a mirror of sorts.
To dismiss the flick as just a controversial exotic parade would be unfair. Anyone who has an emotional side and even empathises with their movies' characters would realise this.
I guess this flick is not meant for the practically inclined ones. You need a sensitive side to your own personality to watch this one and appreciate it.

The "complexity" of the characters are the traits of self-mutilation and sadomasochism. For Maggie, she is a depressive with a severe self-mutilation addiction. That is the crux her personality and what was painstakingly portrayed onscreen. However, since I think that the onscreen affliction of self-mutilation was more of a stereotype or caricature of the illness than an actual victim/persona of it, I was frustrated. In short, I DO identify intimately with this personality type and I thought that my demographic was horribly misrepresented onscreen, and that is what I thought was offensive.
So the issue wasn't that I was looking at the movie in a practical or pragmatic perspective; I was absolutely emotionally involved with the two characters. I just feel as though their construct was a horrible misrepresentation of the actual demo (the demo that I have identified myself with in various times of my life).
In short, these "complex characters" were nothing but caricatures and stereotypes; the outsider's view of what it is like to have these traits and desires. It's more the assumptive vision of the masses, a generalized and simplistic view of what it is like to live with that kind of depression and desperation (and sadomasochistic sexual desire). The characters didn't seem real to me at all. It played out more like poorly-written erotic fiction from an author who fantasizes about being a sadomasochist, but has no idea what the lifestyle is actually like.

As the show progresses, everything that unfolds on the show take place in the family, too.
Though bit lengthy (first half was kinda dull and the 2nd was full with twists & turns) but overall, it was a pretty decent horror thriller from India in compare to other recent Bollywood horror films. Kudos to the writer cum director of the movie Vikram K. Kumar for his fair enough effort.:)

I have a deep empathy for Gyllenhaal's character, but certainly a very limited sense for Spader's. Needless to say both these characters have emotional issues, issues that the film would have us believe can be dealt with via a sado-masochistic sexual relationship. In fact Gyllenhaal's character comes to depend on this as a remedy for her emotional problems.
Spader's obsessive compulsions are not the least bit empathetic, he essentially at times mentally abuses a vulnerable, naive young women caught between a sudden sexual attraction and her own personal problems.
Anyway you look at this film, it portrays a obscenely unhealthy sexual relationship, between two people you genuinely need to sort through emotional issues that are ruining there lives. It tries to throw this particular fetish into the mix as an expression of unhealthy tendencies and have us believe it is an "OK" way to deal with such problems.
I certainly believe I have a sensitive side to my personality, and more then fleeting experience with both healthy and un-healthy BDSM relationships. It is certainly not lack of empathy but rather a greater understanding that the pain that depresses someone is such away can't be so frivolous attached to rough sexual exploits.
The characters didn't seem real to me at all. It played out more like poorly-written erotic fiction from an author who fantasizes about being a sadomasochist, but has no idea what the lifestyle is actually like.
It really, really does.

Went to see this with a bunch of friends...most of them fucking hated it and left after like half an hour. I wasn't overly impressed either...I normally would have stuck around to see how things turned out, but it wasn't nearly good enough to stick around after my ride peeled, haha.

A sprawling, epic ode to whiney, hypochondriacal, pretentious, emotionally detached dickheads everywhere. It plays out not as genius, but as a string of heartless gimmicks which left me cold.
Charlie Kaufman's writing is best left to other directors. I found this to be his weakest film to date... which is still better than most films by nature of it's sheer audacity.

Well, here's a tip...
If backwoods kids start to fuck with you, don't go back. AND don't follow them to their house... JUST GO AWAY.
...
I thought that that was the weakest part of the film; why the HELL would they go back the next day if those kids popped their tires. I would say Rednecks 1, Chrono 0, let's go to a fucking hotel.
...
Eden Lake: 2/5
I was really disappointed. Some intense moments, but the characters continued to make poor decisions time and time again.

Yeah they did make some poor decisions, but I put that down to them just freaking out...
The female lead got smarter to it as the film rolled on, and I don't think that was an intentional decision at the end on her part.

Scarlet Street (1945)
Wow...what a movie. Went in knowing nothing about it, and with no expectations whatsoever - might be why I enjoyed it so much.
The script creates a wonderfully tangled plot, and Fritz Lang's skilled direction keeps everything just barely under control. Robinson gives a brilliant performance, as do the supporting cast.
The only real flaw was in the ending...it ended well, but just kept on going. Made damn sure to drive the point home, to the point where they easily could have shaved off 10 minutes near the end.
Still, great movie - if you enjoy film noir, take a look.

Resident Evil. Great movie, normally I love it but with my Hubby sick all day I was in mothering mode so I couldn't stand the scares. This is a strange contrast to how I was snooping around, watching patients get blood taken, have ivs inserted and get wounds stitched all day. Giggled the whole time. Maybe it was just a long day and I was tired. I refuse to believe I'm becoming a wuss just cause I've only watched 2 horror movies a month for the last 4 months.
I also watched some horrible movie about a Basalisk attacking Colorado. It was called basilisk:The Serpent King. Never watch it. So bad. Not even cheesy and fun, just bad. Bad gore, bad puns, bad acting, fake science and archaeology. Bad.
