Dog Day Afternoon

It was pretty cool. Al Pacino does a good job and the main cop guy is hilarious when he's yelling at all th eidiot deputies, which is often. It's a weird movie, but then again truth is stranger than fiction and this is based on a true story. Every synopsis I read of the film talked about the plot being about AL Pacino trying to rob a bank to get money in order to help his gay lover afford a sex change so I wasn't in any big hurry to watch it, thinking it was like some arthouse crap I wouldn't like, but that was actually a really minor subplot in really cool bank robbery film.

House Of Wax (1953)

So, I finally got around to watching this one. After the fact that I saw the "remake" first, I now see that the "remake" isn't really a remake at all. It's a completely new twist and invisionment on this old story. Truth be told, this version is a remake itself. Almost exact actually. But anyway:

Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer

My 4 year old really wanted to go see it, so...

It is a little better than the first film, but that isn't saying much. The acting (aside from Chris Evans' Johnny Storm and Doug Jones' Silver Surfer) is some of the worst I've seen in a major motion picture in some time. The direction is ham-fisted, the dialog is atrocious, the special effects are only "special" in the short-bus sense of the word and Jessica Alba's terrible blonde dye-job and phony blue contacts are sooooo distracting. What's worse is that every time a picture of Sue Storm appears on a TV or a newspaper (which is over-used) her eyes are their natural brown! Whats the very worst is that they somehow make one of the foxiest females in Hollywood look... kinda dowdy:mad:

Ocean's Thirteen. 07/10

Didnt expect much from this one after the rather paler Ocean's Twelve, but this one is surprisingly good. To say anything would be giving away the plot, but the characterisation is superb and the direction and rendering of the movie is decent. The pace is quite nice once it starts, and the returning actors do an awesome job of maintaining the continuity.

Recommended by me. This is one trilogy which is actually good.

Amazingly beautiful and depressing as hell. Seriously, I'm not sure I've seen a more depressing film. And it's a fucking cartoon. It's about two young orphans struggling to survive in post-war Japan, but Oliver Twist this is not. Definitely one-of-a-kind. Watch only if you wish to have your heart broken.

I'm still not certain if I love it or hate it... it is certainly lingering with me.

Not bad, I would definately give it a 7 out of 10, and recommend it to anyone who hasnt seen it, but it fell a bit short of my expectations. Being that it was part of the "8 films you cant see in theaters" festival last year, and the reviews i read made it out to be something that would hgaunt me for months and stain my underwear, i was a little let down that i wasnt terrified by it.

It did have the first "BOO" moment to make me jump in years, and the ghosts were spot-on freaky looking., i dont know what it was, there was just something missing from it for me.

The Sid character couldnt act his way out of a wet paper bag, and really the wife is th eonly truly sympathetic character in the whole thing, but it has a great traditional horror pattern (freaky opening, slow build up to a fsat paced climax)

All in all, if you haVENT SEEN IT, WATCH IT, IT IS FUN IF NOTHING ELSE, AND IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW MORE PEOPLE SHOULD AT LEAST BE TRYING TO DO HORROR MOVIES.

Duel to the Death

It started off with Ninjas fighting Shaolin Monks... then Ninjas and Monks were exploding...then Ninjas flew in on Kites...then a hot Chinese chick slashes the shit out of some people...then the best Samurai warrior is going to fight the best Kung Fu Monk...then more ninjas show up and one of them strips, and it turns out she's a girl. So there's a hot, naked, female ninja attacking a Shaolin Monk.

Add political intrigue, plucky comic relief, a talking bird, touching moments with children, supernatural powers, Ninja stars flying all over the place, the best beheading I've ever seen and an epic fight between the greatest warriors in the world on a cliff hundreds of feet above the churning sea!!!!

This is the best movie ever made.

After this movie picked up a little bit, it wasn't as boring as I was expecting. The first movie in the series was a little on the boring side to me for some reason. This one was a bit better. And as everyone has told me, it's a lot like Dog Soldiers.

Phantasm III

Fun movie, got the DVD, was a little disappointed that it was a "matted" widescreen and so the full-screen VHS shows more of the image on top and bottom. That said, though, the image is fine and the movie sounds REALLY good. With commentary from refined Angus Scrimm and a somewhat jaded but funny A. Michael Baldwin. Some would describe this as "not a movie but rather a reunion party on film" .....In this regard, Phantasm III is enjoyable, and it is nice to see so many players from the original classic come back to get paid.

I especially like the first 30 minutes, which introduces us to the major characters and then picks up right at the end of Phantasm II...we get hearse crashes, dwarf-blasting, Mike, Reggie, Jody and the Tall Man, a "good" sphere, possessed zombies, and a bunch more stuff. I don't think the movie gets better than that first half hour, it becomes a little silly, but the opening is strong enough to make the whole movie watchable.

A favorite moment is when Reggie wakes up after the attack of the Tall Man, who opens a spacegate that scorches the walls black after it disappears. Reggie thinks the Jody sphere is talking to him like it was talking to Mike; he carries the sphere over to the scorched walls, shaking the sphere to see if he can get Jody to speak to him. It squeaks but can only get out a word or so. "Christ--now I'm talking to this damn thing," Reggie says. "Sure fucked up my hallway..."

Well, I was never a big fan of the comic book so it wasn't much of a surprise to me that I was no fan of the film either. Nicholas Cage does alright, but the whole concept/story of Ghost Rider is just ridiculously stupid that I just can't get into it. The FX were obviously CGI, but done pretty well. The fight scenes were pretty lame. All in all, this was one to skip.

I rented this movie thinking it would be another steamer from Elisha Cuthbert, ala The Girl Next Door. Boy was I in for a surprise!

The movie is one of the most surreal, disturbing and deeply atmospheric ones I have seen in recent times. Elisha turns in a really powerful portrayal of a psychologically disturbed teen, and alongwith Camilla Belle, tightly grips this movie from start to finish.

I cannot say much about the plot because it has quite a few twists and turns throughout, but let me say this much...this movie is not for the ordinary viewer. Some will find it slow, some others will find it weird...others might feel repulsed...but this is a set of images which will touch a raw cord, a raw nerve somewhere in your body.

Highly recommended for people who loved Requiem for a Dream and Session 9 -esque movies. For others, especially pre-20 normal-life leading teens, this is better left alone...this was a sure-fire contender for the "Visually Challenging 100" in terms of pure psychology ripping alone.

Recommending to alky, Moth, Despare, Return, Roderick, swiss tony, Doc Faustus, newb, et al. (No Posh...this one is not for you, trust me on this)

It seems it's rather difficult to make a good horror movie with anything less than an R rating. This PG-13 film is no exception. The CGI tranformations looked lame. The characters were bland. The ending sucked. No gore at all. There was not much going for this one...

Watched about half of the Libertine. Got bored, found something alse to do. It is slow and meandering, and REALLY boring past the first 20 minutes, which is a huge shame, because the stylism in it is awesome (they gave everything a darkened, green tone, and the entire movie is grainy, like a turn of the century film from the early 1900s) And, well, Its Johnny Depp, so of course he was excellent, but the movie itself was just dull.

This film was not at all what I expected it to be. For starters, I was expecting it to be good. On top of that, I was under the impression it was a "dark fairy tale" sorta story kind of like Pan's Labrynth or something. It wasn't until I popped it in the DVD player that I learned it was a movie about 2 social rejects that spend all their free time playing in their imagination land. Retarded! There's a 'My Girl'-esque curveball in there, but even that can't help this lame piece of shit. I suppose if you knew what you were getting into instead of expecting something completely different than what you got, you may like it better than me, but I'd have a hard time recommending this one to anyone except little kids. The acting, directing and FX were all good, but I just thought the story was stupid as can be.

Robocop 3.
Totally disappointing after the first two sleek films.
There was no use wasting the Nancy Allen character, Officer Lewis, right at the start.
And the cyborg ninjas and Robocop flying? A total downer.
It is indeed a shame to see the promising franchise give out such a bad sequel.

Bridge to Terabithia

I'm going to have to disagree with Bwind on this one. I found it charming and affecting. The kids were entranced by the story and the wife cried. Nothing groundbreaking, but it was an uplifting tale set in a very real world that I found quite entertaining. There was the one musical montage while painting the house that made me cringe, but it really was the only cringy moment for me.

I actually loved Bridge to Terabithia, because it was different from the fairy-tale-ish stuff that Hollywood has been spewing lately.

It was a coming-of-age movie, and most parents should definitely take their kids to see this one.

Quoting from my Movie Reviews page...

Bridge to Terabithia

Director - Gabor Csupo
Released - 2007

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000N2HDGO.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V45631909_.jpg

It's not Narnia. It's not Harry Potter and it's not Lord of the Rings. And no, it's not even Pixar or Disney animation. Yet, its one of the sweetest, most meaningful movies about kids and their world. More importantly, there's no mumbo-jumbo about magic, monsters and witchcraft. The monsters are there, the wizards are there, the magical world is there, but it's all born out of the natural imagination that kids possess in varying degrees.

The movie pointedly makes a plea to adults to allow their kids to 'open up their minds' instead of cramming them, regimenting them and brain-washing them. Plus, there's a beautiful tale of teen bonding and friendship that carries the movie through...

Welcome to the real world of real pre-adolescents. Jess is a lonely, introverted fifth-grader who fights off his alienation through colours and sketches. Bogged down by his parents' economic hardships and the regular school bullies, he mopes his way until Leslie, the new girl, arrives in school. Leslie opens up a whole new world for him and teaches him the importance of 'connecting' with family, friends, the inner self and the fantasy world.

Take the kids for this movie and let it wash over your and their hearts. They ll love it. And so will you.

Recommended.

Bridge to Tarabithia- my kids loved it.
I was under the impression is was going to be a vastly different movie...and I Hate movies where a kid dies.

The Fountain- meandering, vague, had no character development, visually stunning, dazzling, and emotionally heart wrenching.
I think it will be a movie to watch if you are in the mood for it, and terrible if you're not. Rachel Weisz is WELL lighted in this movie, she looks ethereal (which is the point, I know).

Straight Time (1978)

Saw this one at the Billy Wilder Theater as part of the LA Film Fest. A really cool film based on Eddie Bunker's brilliant novel No Beast So Fierce. Dustin Hoffman, Harry Dean Stanton, Gary Busey, Theresa Russell, M Emmet Walsh and a then-unknown Kathy Bates show us the addictive nature of criminality. Really cool 70s cinema that just isn't made anymore.

I don't know how Zwoti felt about it, but i found it impressive as hell. The work of a filmmaker at the top of his game. I never read the book, but the movie is very strong. Evan Almighty. 05/10

Less than decent sequel to Bruce Almighty. Steve Carrell tries his best to outdo Jim Carrey of the original but sucks. Morgan Freeman returns and is bland as ever. The direction seemed pretty ok for the first 30-odd minutes then it went downhill. Some gags were so corny they werent even in the same league as the word "funny".

Seems like Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth was rolled into half the movie, and most of the comedy and CGI effects revolve around that.

Overall, watch it ONLY if you have NOTHING else to do, otherwise skip it. You wont be missing much. I m surprised how this one became #1 of the weekend box-office, over the much powerful and better entertaining 1408.

Children of Men was very good, but I thought Pan's Labrynth sucked some major testicular juice.

The Return

I should have known going into it that this would suck. Sarah Michelle Gellar + PG-13 horror = recipe for crappy movie. But ignoring my better judgement, I rented it anyways. Blech! Boring film, no gore, confusing plot. Nothing exciting and no real payoff at the end. I thought it sucked! Save your cash!

F

American Pie: The Naked Mile

They really need to stop this franchise in it's tracks. Stick a fork in it, it's done. This movie was not so much a movie as it was a bunch of fart/weiner jokes mixed in between gratuitous boobies and random Eugene Levy encounters. There's no reason that any of us care about Stifler's extended family because they are about a thousand times less entertaining and interesting than The Stiffmeister was in the first film.

It wasn't funny. The acting was mediocre at best. The story and script were utterly terrible. By all rights, this film deserves an F, but they did cram as many boobies as they could into 90 minutes and for that, I'll cut them a little bit of slack.

D-

Creepshow 3

This was fun. It's like watching 5 episodes of Tales From the Crypt that all interweave each other and then tie loosely together at the end. Good gore, some cheesy acting, some of the short stories were better than other but overall, this was an enjoyably cheesy film. I liked it more than Creepshow 2, but less than the original.

B-

Suicide Kings

In a word... Badass. I love this movie. A twisted, dark script superbly cast and acted. Christopher Walken, Denis Leary, Jay Mohr & Jeremy Sisto (and one of the boyfriend's from Roseanne as the hilarious Ira.) I don't want to spoil anything for anyone that hasn't seen it, so just trust me when I say that if you are a fan of films like Made or Very Bad Things, you will LOVE this. It's great.

An uneven, yet thoroughly engaging indictment of the English boarding school system. Sometimes silly, sometimes quite funny with flashes of true cruelty and brutality. The film's odd oscillation between color and b&w feels forced and gimmicky, but a young Malcolm MacDowell shines as his misguided rage boils over.

Epic Movie...it wasn't great, but not alltogether bad. A few of the references were chuckle-worthy but overall nothing of any great brilliance. A few laughs, and definately MUCH better than "Date Movie" to say the least...although, that IS saying very little.
It was "ok".

See no Evil, Hear no Evil - wow...to this day, remains one of my favourite comedy films. Decent plot, ridiculous premise, but solid comedy all 'round...I've not come across a movie that's made me laugh quite as much, in ages. If you haven't seen it, make it your next hire.
RIP RP :(

Breakfast on Pluto

An amazing cast (Cillian Murphy, Steven Rea, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, Brian Ferry, Gavin Friday) in a sweet Neil Jordan film about the most bitter time in Irish history and the lighter-than-air drag transvestite (Murphy) who coasts through it all oblivious. It is wonderfully shot and acted, but the story is a little meandering and lacks a vital thrust.

Me too.

But just because of the first half of the movie. The rest went pretty much the same as the entire sequal.

I prefer Robert Carlyle over Cillian Murphy any day though.

Oh yes, Robert Carlyle surpasses alot of people - diverse, versatile and realistic acting every time. I dont think there is one movie where I dont like his character or the storyline.

And to think he started out in a little known, but delightful, tv drama set in the Scottish Highlands! There's just something about this Scotsman!! :D

"Vacancy" 7-8/10

Concidering that Vacancy had two of Hollywoods dullest actors starring it, it was surprisingly entertaining and thrilling from beginning to end.

The ending and climax could have been better though and i could have done without all the classic cliches, like the cell-phone that didn't work, the cars that wouldn't start etc.
