The Hand (1981) -- 7.5/10; This film is the ultimate in cat jump scares. In one scene, a black cat provides not only the cliché jump scare but proceeds to jump through a closed window. Later, in a dream, the protag (played marvelously by Michael Caine) has a flashback of the same scene.

The Curse (1987) -- 6/10; Adapted from one of Lovecraft's stories, this film takes a good 30 minutes or so to flesh out simple characters and establish its main plot point (an alien substance insidiously destroying the Earth). I was about to abort this viewing when the horror element picked up and progressed nicely to the film's satisfactory conclusion, and not without some nice makeup and FX work.

'Return Of The Living Dead' (1985)
Plot:
Three medical supply house workers, A mortician and a group of teenagers band together against an army of zombies.
Phantoms Review: One of the all time great horror-comedy mash ups. Plenty of scares, good FX, some fine acting and overall sense of the absurd. Love this film.

The Exorcist: Director's Cut
This is the only movie (so far) that still makes my skin crawl. Out of all the types of horror movies that I have watched since I was a kid, the ones with creepy demonic voices are the only ones that give me the chills. Horror movies have never given me the "scare" factor except for The Exorcist. I wish there were horror movies out there that actually scared me now. ::sad::

PROPHECY (1979). Silly, but pretty decent "Nature Strikes Back " film with an awesome monster, a sentiment I can live with and some cool scenes, especially the discovery in the creek. Now, if only they had put someone else in here besides Talia Shire::confused:: ***

Read the book. It's much more atmospheric and absolutely terrifying, in comparison to the film. A TON of changes between the book & the film.

Deathstalker (1983) -- 3.5/10; This is not the action-fantasy movie to watch if you are either a feminist or someone who likes decent action scenes. Instead of choreographing fights, the director focuses tight on one of the fighters, who is clearly fighting nothing but tedium. If you like half-naked sex slaves, however, this will please. It did make me pine for BEASTMASTER.

Madhouse (1974)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fa/Madhouseposter.jpg
Vincent Price plays Paul Toombes a horror actor famous for playing the character Dr. Death with Peter Cushing playing the writer of the Dr. Death film series. During a New Years Eve party Toombes' fiancee is killed. He wakes up to find her decapitated and the shock drives him to be institutionalized. Years later he decides to revive the character for a TV series and people start to die in ways similar to his films.
Far from either Cushing or Price's best film both horror icons are in good form here and there's plenty of disturbing imagery. There's also brief cameos from Basil Rathbone and Boris Karloff as shown in clips from other movies. While it's not a must see film from any of those horror alums it does provide us with an interesting and exciting mystery that keeps us guessing 'who dun it'.

Why the film flopped and crippled the bank accounts of the famous Hammer Studios can be seen. The film is in no way a match to Hitchcock's original, and neither does it give off a vibe of being a Hammer film. It doesn't try to be an original in it's own right either, like Carpenter's The Thing.
I have always found Elliott Gould unbearable, and in the company of a much-amused Cybill Shepherd and her legs, doesn't give the film any sort of push. The only notable screen presence comes from Angela Lansbury who, rather ruefully, is restricted to a cameo appearance. The main question which imparts the title it's name is never answered either. Shame.
Avoid, unless you are a completist and just HAVE to see that final Hammer film of the late 70s.

I think I like posting reviews more in the overall last seen movie area. I had to think and search for the year of this one before posting -
The Sentinel -
I don't know where I heard about this one. If it was here or another movie. Perhaps The Burbs? I'm not sure. But I saw this a few days ago. It reminded me of Rosemary's Baby in how normal, for the most part, everything seems and then you get shocked or surprised by something. I like it. It's slow but when stuff happens it hooks you. I couldn't believe the first or second reveal. I was surprised by the nudity and raunchy scenes too. Maybe this was a hippie influenced time? Because I didn't expect the scenes in the movie. Definitely a movie to check out.

Oh, E.T was relevant a year ago? Let's make a weird horror rip-off out of it (not REALLY a rip-off, it had a lot to same feel to it, but it was completely different.)
It had stiff acting and horribly lifeless child actor. I cringed every time, this kid was on the screen. Relationship with his dad, was okay I guess?
Trust me, it get's really out of touch at the end. Don't want to tell any details. So... So bad is, semi-good?

Oh, man... Somebody. I was going to fall a sleep, so many times while watching this movie. Actors were not great, their characters were uninteresting. Special effects were bad as i expected (rubber fish and limbs).
And plot was stupid.
Also, this VHS-cover told me that it was more "the extreme limits of tolerance" (than Jaws). Kids, never truly trust covers? 'mmmkay?
Maniac (1980)
http://horrorhomework.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/maniac.jpg
"Sweet! This is a classic, right?" Well, it had some great splatter scenes. Mind of the killer and his room was... Claustrophobic? But I think this movie, stretched some scenes way off. It was not that great, but I saw it.
I Drink Your Blood (1970)
http://www.cheese-magnet.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/idrinkbloodbig.jpg
This was... I had NO expectations about this grindhouse-flick. But it was fantastic. Actors weren't the best, but the characters were there. It knew that, it was bad. So the movie acted like it and was excellent while doing it. Sadly it couldn't made to the end. Ending act seemed, confusing and didn't really build the already made expectations. Also, there was not that much splatter. Still, this was best movie of the marathon. Would watch again!

My husband watched it with me (his first time watching the director's cut) and he also thought it was a cool scene that should have been left in the original.

SOYLENT GREEN (1973). Despite parodies of the ending (was 13 when I saw it the first time and was blown away) and lots of Heston hamminess, still a pretty decent flick and the date in here (2022) not too far off. Edward G. Robinson's last film and a great turn by him, especially in his final scene, even if being taken out by Dick Van Patton:shocked:! An American Werewolf in London: 9/10
*Possible Spoilers*
I have seen this film a few times before (though it had certainly been a while since my last viewing), and while I mentioned on another thread I enjoyed the Howling more than an American Werewolf in London, it is still, without question, an incredible film. The film is able to find the right balance between horror and comedy. If you like straight horror, this may not be the film for you, but otherwise it is really good. And, what is interesting is that the comedy does not detract from the horror. It really is quite complementary. There were also some great special effects and excellent makeup. Additionally, the direction draws you in from the beginning to the end. To add to this, the score really matched the film and the soundtrack was well-selected as well. The story is not particularly novel, but that is unimportant. The film is interesting because it takes traditional elements of werewolf films and uses them in new and often unexpected ways. For example, the ultimate "werewolf causes mayhem and is tracked down" scene begins in a porn theater. There was also a really good performance by the main actor and his character was very well-developed. Sadly, many of the other major actors/actresses were not as strong particularly the nurse. In fact, that whole sub-plot just seemed a bit forced and unrealistic. Many of the other minor characters were well-done though on a more positive note. While there may be some not as well-done things in the film and it is not straight horror, it is still a very strong horror film and one of the better werewolf films. If you still have not seen this film, I highly recommend it.

Let's Jessica to Death: 8.5/10
I finally managed to watch this film; I have been wanting to watch it for a while. I have to say I really enjoyed this film. At times, it felt a little standard, but that changed as the film went on. I was definitely wondering exactly what was going on throughout the film. I figured out certain things, but did not know what they meant. I definitely did not see the ending coming. Another thing was I was able to connect with the characters particularly Jessica. I often wondered if what was happening was real or imagined. They played that angle real well. I definitely agree that the film had a very eerie and creepy feeling. I was definitely on edge at several points. This was enhanced by the simple, piercing score. The film also seemed to posses a somber, depressing feel like as if the situation was hopeless. Overall, an excellent film.

House Of Dark Shadows (1970)
-Jonathan Frid
Plot: Released from his coffin, after 200 years, by local drunk Willie Loomis, vampire Barnabas Collins goes on a killing spree, while at the same time charming his modern era relatives. Soon he meets local girl Maggie Evans and becomes convinced she is the reincarnation of his long dead fiancee Josette and he plans to go through with the wedding.
Phantoms Review: One of my all time favorite vampire movies. Even if you've never seen the tv show, you can follow this movie. This is a well made, well acted horror story. The plot is based on a story from the show, but condensed down to movie length. The film has kind of a Hammer Films style to it and it works well. This is a fun entertaining movie.

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
http://s15.postimg.org/qf5fhd84r/Fridaythe13th_manhattan.jpg
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097388/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Some say this is one of the worst movies of the franchise, but if youre a big fan of Jason V you will watch it anyway. Its kinda goofy (but not even close to Jason X). It was also way less bloody than usually. The actual Manhattan part comes way late in the movie and it is disappointing. They could have made something great out of the "Jason in Manhattan" concept.
The Prowler (1981)
http://s29.postimg.org/q0iqax66f/the_prowler.jpg
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082951/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4
Watched it again some time ago. The movie has really original death scenes and very nice special effects made by Tom Savini. The plot is well written and it had a bit of twist at the end. Basically; GI gets dumbed by hes girfriend and after returning he goes on a rampage. The atmosphere stays cold blooded throughout the movie.
All things combined; a above average slasher and a definite classic.
Edit: the years of the movies.

HALLOWEEN 2 (1981)-This could have been so much better...full of cliches and dull, dull, dull. *1/2
I have mixed thoughts on Halloween II. I love they picked up the second Halloween I left off. I thought the beginning was horrific & compelling. I thought it stuck to the 'cannon' of Halloween, and there were some excellent scenes (like Laurie and Michael in the Hospital parking lot, and then up to Michael through glass back in). But of course most of it in the hospital seemed pretty uninspired. Carpenter should have directed it, but maybe he thought the story was played out dry.
Some old 80's Sword & Sorcery favorites.

Exactly, I remember staring at the videobox cover too. So how was Deathstalker I & II?
Deathstalker still looks like it had a great budget. The look and feel is every bit as good as Conan The Barbarian, but because it was made in Argentina the story line and characters just have that "foreign" feel to them. It's like watching an Italian horror movie made by Lucio Fulci. It has a totally different feel to it that an American film. Still, it was enjoyable.
Deathstalker II didn't have the budget and they reused some footage from the first film, but they added the comedy element. All sorts of sexual jokes. "Is that your sword or are you just happy to see me?" kinds of things. Very, very cheesy but in a typical 80's way which made it also very fun for me.
I still have to watch part III and IV. I haven't seen those since they were released and have very little memory of them. I'd re-watched the first two films in the last 5 years so they were a little fresher in my head but it had been long enough that it was time to re-watch them. But yeah, I still enjoyed them and will probably watch them again in a couple more years.

AMITYVILLE 3 THE DEMON 1983
Starring Tony Roberts and Tess Harper
Out of the Amityville sequels I've watched so far, this is the best. It has that grainy VHS look to it, which I love and a solid story til about the last 10 mins or so. Meg Ryan and Candy Clark also star.
THE AMITYVILLE CURSE. 1989
This house wasn't even the Amityville house but was in Amityville so I guess that was enough to put Amityville in the title. In a local bar a "poor boy that killed his whole family" was mentioned, so again a very tenuous connection.
Five friends spend a few nights in the house to fix it up and hopefully resell it.
I'd give it a miss unless you want to see some really hideous...sweaters.

I honestly think I watched most of them but can't remember much of any of them! The two I mentioned in previous posts above are the best and the worst, imho.

Deathstalker III: The Warriors From Hell (1988)
http://www.rankopedia.com/CandidatePix/90498.gif
More low budget Sword and Sorcery. Couldn't really remember this one. They didn't reuse footage for this one like they did in part 2 and part 4. The sword fights are so comical I can see why it was picked to be on MST3000. Probably the weakest entry, but I still enjoyed it though.
Deathstalker IV: Match Of Titans (1991)
http://www.movieposterdb.com/posters/10_03/1990/99388/l_99388_9fb5fb17.jpg
The final installment of the "Deathstalker" quadrilogy. I couldn't remember much about this one other than Rick Hill who played Deathstalker in the first movie is back. Lots of footage was used from the previous films even though it is pretty much a direct sequel to the original. It treats the other footage as other characters and not Deathstalker. Pretty much a repeat plot line with an evil female sorceress this time. I had a ball re-watching this series. Lots of laughs.
Bad Sword and Sorcery just reminds me of how much fun I had as a kid growing up in the 80's. I'm ready to tie a blanket around my neck, put on my burger king crown, grab my plastic sword and head off to the backyard in search of adventure.
Next up for me, more classic Sword & Sorcery from horror legend Joe D'Amato with the "Ator" quadrilogy.

Black Devil Doll From Hell (1984)
http://www.fright.com/edge/BlackDevilDollFromHell.jpg
I have a friend who enjoys seeing bad movies. He stopped by the other night and wanted to watch something "bad". Knowing that I have an immense catalog of bad cinema he actually requested Black Devil Doll From Hell by name. Since it had been 10 years since my last viewing I agreed.
For anyone who hasn't seen this piece of cult cinema, it was shot on VHS and features a very religious black woman buying a puppet/doll which in turn gives her her hearts desire. So if you have a fetish for watching Dolls or Puppets come to life (and talk like Mr. T) and rape overly religious women, this movie is for you.
My friend felt rather speechless when it was over ranking it as probably one of the bottom 2 films he's ever seen.
This was the 3rd time I had subjected myself to this movie. The 2nd time was to hear the alternate Heavy Metal soundtrack rather than the Atari/Nintendo game style soundtrack. When I told him this was my 3rd traversal he looked at me in utter amazement of such a feat. I must admit I feel slightly empowered now having survived 3 viewings. I think I can go another 20 years though before attempting a 4th.

It does what it is well. Effective sci-fi thriller, good basically all film aspects.
'Bad guy' Allegory Traget?
I couldn't help but to try to determine who the real 'bad guy' is in the film's allegory. In the 1956 film version, at the time, most said the aliens were communism. Others determined at a closer look, and considering the script writer Daniel Mainwaring, McCarthyism was the alien allegory target. Who is it for the 1978 version?
Sure, the film's for profit, and for entertainment; and maybe at most a nod toward a warning against sleeping through mass brain-washing, loss of freedoms, dehumanization and/or dangers of conformity. But does the film actually reveal it's alien allegory target?
I instantly knew I heard the answer during the book discussion of the mud-bath scene between Veronica Cartwright and the patron. I never heard of the books or authors before, and the titles have no intrinsic meaning. They didn't mean anything to me. So I watched the film and made my own determinations void of the two references.
The references I picked up on were the priest and the Amazing Grace song coming from the boat. First, a priest (Robert Duvall) on the swing, staring strangely at the children being handed flowers by a teacher. Was he angry at the site? Was he in favor of it? Was he an alien? I couldn't determine, but couldn't ignore this odd and blatant shot. At the end of the film, Sutherland hears an instrumental of Amazing Grace at the San Francisco bay dock. SMALL SPOILER HERE: He has hope to escape via boat; and the song evokes hope (generally to most). As he approaches the cargo ship, the song stops, and he see's pods being loaded on the boat. Does this scene indict christianity/religion, or does the music ceasing indicate christianity/religion been squashed by the aliens? I'm not sure, but taking the film and scene as a whole, I would certainly guess the latter.
Basically, I didn't grasp a specific bad guy allegory target on my own.
So what were the two books?: Worlds in Collision, by Immanuel Velikovsky, and Star Maker, by Olaf Stapledon. What do these books suggest are targets? Like I said, I never even heard of these, and (sorry), I'm not going to research these to point that I give a definitive answer. But for anyone interested, I'll quote the one source/opinion I happenstanced upon:
These two books are clues – while on the surface, this is a standard-fare sci fi/horror film, yet underlying the cheese is a profoundly occult message. Jewish psychoanalyst Immanuel Velikovsky is famous for his alternative theory of cosmology and cosmogony, known as “catastrophism,” where ancient mythology and its representational assigning of the gods to specific planets actually plays a role in reconstructing primal history and human origins.
Velikovsky was lambasted by both modern science and his contemporaries, but whatever his flaws, my suspicion is that he was rejected for three reasons: He utilized the Bible as a document that reported actual historical events, was critical of carbon dating, and held to an electromagnetic view of the universe, as opposed to Newtonian atomistic ideas. The slightest hint of any of those three ideas is enough to be rejected wholesale by modern “science,” which makes Velikovsky all the more interesting and worth considering, in my estimation. The Velikovsky archive can be found here. This is not a full endorsement on my part, but that the ideas are worth examination, due to the incoherence of modern dogmatic materialism.
The other book is Stapledon’s Star Maker, which scientistic illuminist Arthur C. Clarke considered one of the most important works of science fiction. Star Maker was written in 1937 and actually utilizes the theme of genetic engineering far ahead of its time, while Stapledon’s works would go on to influence other top British technocrats, such as H.G. Wells and Bertrand Russell. This confirms my thesis thesis that Invasion is specifically referencing genetic engineering and cross-species manipulation with the bizarre “dog-man” scene, as the books were obviously chosen as specific clues as to elucidate this point. Like Star Maker, Velikovsky too was interested in the idea of other lifeforms seeding our planet, a close adaptation of the theory others have called “panspermia.” While Invasion is not dealing with panspermia specifically, the allusions to it in the film and in the authors suggest an emergent, time-bound deus ex machina “creation,” in the least. In other words, all three are proffering the cryptocracy’s relatively recently-constructed mythology of man’s creation, manipulation and/or guidance by “space brothers.”

Serpico
5/10
I had high expectations for Serpico. I would hazard to guess much of it's accolades comes from the (near) universal desire to see police selflessly stand against corruption. It's not a film you want to be critical of; you want everyone to support Serpicos. There's a dramatization of his life, along with showing the pertinent going-ons; but compared to other films of this type (All the Presidents Men, Erin Brockovich, etc), I can't say this was particularly entertaining. Characters all seemed one-dimensional and uncompelling. I wasn't even sure I came away really knowing why Serpico did what he did.

I had to split up my reviews from the Halloween month. It was too long. I guess I can put this one here:
Prom Night (Original) -
This isn't the best horror movie but it does make the remake look even worse. From what I remember the remake didn't even follow the story of the original. There was no twist in the remake. And the twist is one of the best parts of the movie. I think it's more revenge mystery movie with slasher elements. I watched the trailer afterwards and I love the last tag line "if you're not back by midnight, you won't be coming home." The dance scene with Jamie Lee Curtis is great. The whole movie shows her acting ability as it was just about right after Halloween. And she's a completely different character here. Really cute. I like how they used the dance scene music again for the climax too. It's crazy with all that's going on. I think I watched a bad version though as some scenes were really dark and I could barely see what was happening. But this is a good movie to check out.

No I didn't.
His dreams were premonitions, and he was dreaming of disaster. There was even a thought he was falling into insanity...at the end was that really the last wave to destroy Sydney?? I'm not sure why he had a connection with Aborigines' culture.. This is a film you can view a few times and get your different ideas.

ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL (1979). Definitely a cult movie and hasn't aged all that well, but some funny moments and The Ramones too! ***
Reason I put this in a horror forum was all the names I noticed in the credits and during the interviews/commentaries:
Roger Corman- Producer. Responsible for SO MANY horror/exploitation films
Joe Dante-writer. THE HOWLING, PIRAHNA, MATINEE, GREMLINS
ROB BOTTIN-Giant Mouse/Mrs. Mouse. THE THING, THE HOWLING.
Dean Cundey-Cinematographer. HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, THE THING
John Buechler-Costume design. FRIDAY THE 13TH, PART 6, GHOULIES.
James Cameron-Production Asst. THE TERMINATOE, ALIENS, T2, TITANIC
Gale Anne Hurd-Prouction Asst.- THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, THE WALKING DEAD.
PJ Soles-Actress. HALLOWEEN, CARRIE, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. Adorably cute, although she (and most of the cast) look too old to be high school students. Plays an obsessed Ramones fan, although she revealed she was terrified during the concert segment by the unruly behavior of the actual band fans who were there for the event.
Clint Howard-Actor. EVILSPEAK, ICE CREAM MAN.
Vince Van Patton-Actor. HELL NIGHT
Mary Woronov-Actress. DEATH RACE 2000, NIGHT OF THE COMET.
Dick Miller-Actor. Has been in everything ever made,it seems, usually for a short scene, but always memorable. THE TERMINATOR, THE TERROR, GREMLINS, BUCKET OF BLOOD, THE HOWLING, MATINEE.

In February 1999, a group of spirit communicators attempted to exorcise a film center in Manila of ghosts. These supernatural beings were believed to be those of the victims from a fatal accident during its hasty construction.
Unknown to them, something had long ago taken sanctuary inside the building, feeding on the anger and misery of the victims’ souls. They learned this secret too late and walked into a horrifying encounter.

The movie deals with a female rock band who buys a lost sheet of music that belonged to legendary Italian violinist/composer Niccolo Paganini who was said to have a pact with Satan. The band turns the sheet music into a synth tune called "Paganini Horror". They rent Paganini's old house and film a crappy music video, suddenly Paganini returns from his tomb, with a golden mask and a switchblade violin and starts to kill one after the other...
Its not really good but its charming..he killed his girl and supposedly strung his violin with her insides...I like that! : )

The Amityville Horror (1979)
A family moves into their dream home only to learn that it was the sight of a mass murder a year earlier.
This movie had a couple of genuinely scary scenes, but it had a lot more lame and dull ones. It dragged on a lot of times, but I felt that the biggest problem with this movie was that there really wasn't anything to be scared of. The "villain" in the movie is really just the house, but even then, they could just walk out of the house like normal. The film was just very underwhelming.

There are quite a few movies where it's not the house that's haunted, like in Paranormal Activity, but even if it is the house, then it's a certain demon, like in Poltergeist. And, if it's not a specific demon, then that location usually is isolated, like in The Shining, or the building itself changes in order to trap the victims, like in Grave Encounters.

The Last House on the Left (1972)
On their way to a rock concert, two teenagers are raped and murdered, and their attackers unknowingly take shelter in their victims' parents' house.
This was a pretty difficult movie to watch, but it was a good one nonetheless. The first half of the film captures the rape and murder of the two girls while the second half shows their parents' vengeance on the attackers. Both parts are equally intense and suspenseful. Occasionally during the film, it would switch to two police officers while cheesy music plays in the background. It sort of allowed the audience to take a breather from the very intense and sometimes disturbing nature of the main narrative, but I thought these scenes took away from the overall atmosphere. The story itself is lacking at points, but it's a pretty good movie if you can stomach the more violent scenes.

6/10
I believe i gave it about the same rating. Wasn't as disturbing as I thought it would be. And one thing that REALLY bothered me. Which mother in her right mind would take her daughters killers dick in her mouth?!! :danger:

I caught the last 20 minutes or so on TV a couple of years ago, but I don't really remember much except that he went full Jack Nicholson unlike the original. I plan to watch the remake, however.
So there's no other haunted house movie where they could've just left? Also as i already mentioned the house possessed the father/husband and he was keeping them there and think about it realistically. If something like that really happened in those circumstances would you really think that the house was possessing your significant other and uproot your entire life and move into a new house (Which is not as easy as movies make it seem) or would you just think theres something wrong with your spouse? The latter seems more likely to me. I hate the whole "Just leave the house" argument.
Also this is just nitpicking but with the first poltergeist it was the house that was haunted because of the burial ground. The demon storyline was in the second one.

Even before he went completely psycho, Kathy saw the pig eyes and other evidently paranormal stuff in the house. Something I did like about the remake that I forgot to mention was that it was more obvious that George was slowly being taken by the house because in the original, it seemed very sudden. He seemed like a more concrete villain than just the house.
You're right about the Poltergeist thing now that I remember, and to be honest, I hate the whole "built on an ancient burial ground" plot device.

People make themselves believe what they want to believe. Most people would not decide to move out of their homes like in Insidious because they think its haunted. I've heard many people mention that they felt like their house was haunted but none of them moved out because of it. It's just never been an issue i've had with haunted house movies, just feels like nitpicking.
Name one other movie that has used that plot device.

'Salems Lot' (1979)
-David Soul, James Mason
Plot: Writer returns to his hometown to write a book about the local"haunted house" only to discover some real life horrors starting to happen.
Phantoms Review: One of my favorite adaptations of a Steven King story. Well acted, great atmospheric direction by Tobe Hooper and some genuinely creepy scenes.Worth watching, skip the remake. ::devil::

THE BROOD (1979). Really like David Cronenberg's work, although his earlier work tended to go scattershot until it was time for a grossout. More mature script here dealing with child abuse/looming divorce still bounces back and forth, but this is worth seeing. And if you hang in there, you'll be rewarded with one of the most wonderfully disgusting scenes ever filmed for my money. ***
Other Cronenberg films I really liked were THE DEAD ZONE, DEAD RINGERS, CRASH, M BUTTERFLY and especially A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.

THE UNNAMABLE 1988
A monstrous offspring is left entombed in a house, cursed by her father. He was kind to her but ensured that she would never be able to leave the house.
Many, many years later, a group of college kids decide to explore and spend the night.

The Screaming Woman (1972)
Cool little TV movie from the 70's - The Screaming Woman. It's pretty short, like a long Twilight Zone episode about a woman (Olivia de Havilland) with dementia who is trying to convince people she has found (a barely alive) Buried body.

I agree. I think it's one of the best horror & sci-fi films of all-time. IMO, if you're paying attention while watching, & you can understand it, it's gets your mind racing -- on how you're going to survive -- if your one of these guys. Plus, I think it's very immersive, visceral, horrifying, and most of the creature special effects are the best to date... IMO so far CG hasn't bested this realism.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7b/My_bloody_valentineposter.jpg
When people say this is one of the better early slasher movies they aren't kidding. It holds up incredibly well and to this day is probably one of the best slasher films ever made. The premise that the killer returns to stop a Valentine's Day dance is a bit cheesy but completely forgivable considering how well done this film is. The acting is solid, the mood is eerie, the scares are tense, the kills are good and the gory special effects makeups are very effective even by today's standards. I think the miner is one of the better slasher movie villains. While the costume is kind of basic it is also very menacing and at times the use of breathing is reminiscent of Darth Vader.
