Really entertaining and expertly crafted slice of Japanese sci-fi/gun play action film making.
Some excellent characters, some great FX (including some marvellous CGI renditions of apocalyptic destroyed cities with alien ships and huge transformer robots roaming the ruins), some great, violent action, a solid cybertech/Industrial soundtrack and a nice streak of gentle humour.

That's being mild. "Prince" is a crap heap. Moronic in the extreme. AWFUL humour dilutes even the smallest chance this cheap looking silly film had of being even slightly good.

The Devil is a stupid splodge in a jar, and then a girl with strawberry jam on her face, the scary satanic helpers are nothing but a bunch of tramps led by the suitably crap as always Alice Cooper and in suitably dumbed down fashion all the horror has to be made a joke of (the scene with the annoying Chinese guy making bad one liners while trapped in the closet is so dreadful Carpenter should have never been allowed on a film set again - which given the other crap he's done since would have been a good thing)...resulting in a true turkey!

The unbroken line of crap and below average movies since this low point shows that Carpenter should have retired years ago and done us and his legacy a big favour.

Tenebre - Now THAT is more like it. True horror class and perhaps Argento's best film.

I really liked this show too. I even showed it to my Dad who's 74 and he really liked it. He likes a lot of the old Horror stuff. He has told me about going to the theatre on Saturdays when he was a kid, paying 25 cents for a double feature, popcorn and a soda! Oh the good ole days. He's seen all the classics too.

Cartoons and the whole deal.

we were given 50 cents .. the other 25 was for a popcorn and a drink but we went to this shoe repair/candy store (!) place on the way and would get a bag full of 3 for a penny candy. (blackballs, swedish berries, etc)

a show and a trip to the dentist for 1/2 buck .. cant beat that.

The only expectation I had was that it had werewolves. I didn't dislike it, I actually liked it quite a bit. If I ever see it for sale, more than likely I'll pick it up. If I get it again, I have to make sure to sit down and watch the whole thing in one sitting. I kept having to stop and start (had to get my nephew's car from where he works), so sometimes I got a little lost. But, overall, very good movie.

Just looked back at what I wrote before - should be "Brotherhood", not Brother. Sorry!

Combat Shock...a war/splatter movie...with some Lynch twists

Now this is a movie that sorts out the men from the boys.

Utterly downbeat to the point of dejection, this is far more than a sum of its notoriously shocking parts (the mutant baby, the drug injecting, the final murders) - a film that strips away any remote chance of viewer comfort or redemption and makes Taxi Driver seem like Wayne's World by comparison.

Well acted, with an unsettling score (composed by its star) and amusingly misleading packaging - depicting a Rambo-esque war romp which couldn't be further from the truth.

I'm so excited about this movie I've probably posted this somewhere before, but I can't be bothered to check.

The Hillside Strangler.

Early word on this was right, this is a real censor-baiting misogyny-fest.

C Thomas Howell is excellent as Kenny, but Nicholas Turturro is a tour-de-force as the fearsome Angelo - sort of a Chris Penn performance by way of Joe Pesci.

Some of the protracted torture and murder scenes are very difficult to watch, and it is most surprising this was passed uncut in the UK (Tartan Films supremo Hamish McAlpine must be sucking off BBFC chairman Quentin Thomas).

On the whole, director Chuck Parello delivers again - his Henry 2: The Mask of Sanity was a great start (what about that head-sawing scene?), and after the relatively restrained Ed Gein this proves he is not one to shy away from risque material and show what other directors barely dare to hint at.

Unfortunately, the unpleasantness is virtually non-stop once it gets going - meaning the later, less detailed murders loose their impact somewhat and the ending seems rather rushed.

There was a time i could tell you evey bod gun/car/girl off the top of my head ..

I have all the books .. including the ones written after Fleming.
I have books about bond ..
I have every movie on DVD, most on Laserdisc, and all on VHS.
Every soundtrack too ..

Man those John BArry scores kick ass !!!!

The series has faltered (Moonraker) and has picked back up again (tomorrow never dies)
Its one of the longest running franchises (if not the longest) and no matter what .. I'll always follow it.

Best Villian : Christopher Walken

Urgeok, if you have a whole bunch of the books n stuff, I was just wondering, have you ever seen the graphic novel kinda thing?...I think it came before most (or even all) of the films, and was by Fleming, but I'm not sure who did the art.
Basically the whole storyline involved JB protecting some chick in a house/barn out in the middle of nowhere against her 3 would-be assassins? I'm not 100% but JB himself may have been shot and/or killed in the end?
I'm not sure of the name, but I found a copy in an old bookstore a long time ago and quite enjoyed reading it. Very oldskool.

Ok, and to keep on topic, I watched Office Space for the first time in a few years...man, I always loved this movie...

that sounds like The Spy Who Loved Me which Ian Fleming co-wrote with a woman (and took place in Canada !)

It was a roadside diner/motel and 3 crooks were trying to hole up in it. (Bond and girl survived)

I never saw the graphic novel though.

Most of the Bond books were first published in Playboy.

i'd be willing to bet that if there was a graphic novel, it came long after ...
i found a couple of articles that might help you ..
The books did come first as shown in the second paragraph

Bond In Books
Titan Books will be presenting their latest reprints of classic James Bond comic strip adventures. First published as daily newspaper strips in the 1960's, Titan have lovingly collected and remastered the strips as graphic novels. Enter the prize draw at the show for your chance to win a complete set of Titan Classics! Penguin USA will be making the trip across the pond to show off their latest Ian Fleming novels with retro artwork specially commissioned for the series.

In 1956 Fleming started selling his novels to be adapted for a comic strip. He was asked to contribute to a series of articles for London's Sunday Times on diamond smuggling. The articles appeared in book form in 1957. Fleming published A successful children's book about a magical car, CHITTY-CHITTY-BANG-BANG. "But some motorcars - mine, for instance, and perhaps yours - are different. If you get to like them and understand them, if you are kind to them and don't scratch their paint and bang their doors, if you fill them up and pump them up when they need it, of you keep them clean and polish and out the rain and snow as much as possible, you will find, you MAY find, that they become almost like persons - MORE than just ordinary persons - MAGICAL PERSONS!!!" The story was adapted into a musical film in 1968. Fleming wrote the book for his son, Caspar, who committed suicide at the age of 23.

I just saw "The Grudge" (U.S), it was not too bad, a little weird how it handled the timeframe/different perspective thing, it had SOME tense scenes - I personally don't think that much "Raimi" came through...but I guess it wasn't really exclusively his was it?
Some freakyness...but I was like "what the fuck" when it ended, pretty sudden. I didn't like it greatly.
Not bad, not that great.

If "The Ring" is anything to go by, I might go check out Ju On, I'm guessing it would've been a little scarier, probably explained things a little better too? Anyone?

Terribly bloated! A 30 mins, average old twist "Twilight Zone" episode drawn dreadfully out with almost 2 hours of padding.

The whole film was run of the mill and obviously only existing to deliver a twist...an obvious twist at that.

At least the "Sixth Sense" did something marginally interesting while it was building up to the twist.

I usually see the 'twist endings coming a mile away'
Every single time.

The one thing that impressed me about The Others and 6th Sense both is not only were they fresh and origional.. well acted and tense ... they both delivered a twist ending i never saw coming ... and in a way that didnt feel like it was there as a gimmick.

I have a lot of respect for both of these films.

Your description of the film accurately describes The Village .. but not The Others - in my opinion.

I just saw Paycheck.
I had no idea what to expect, there were so many mixed reviews...I thought I'd go see it 'cos it was a John Woo action film.
I wasn't dissapointed.
I wouldn't mind watching it again to catch a few more things, but overall...I think I got pretty much all of it.
The movie wasn't like much of Woo's other stuff, although you could tell he was involved (of course, there had to be ONE gun to gun standoff). Great action sequences and stunts, the storyline...although initially confusing, ends up explaining itself very well, and is pretty interesting.
I saw elements of SO many other films in this one - Terminator, bourne Identity, 12 monkeys, memento, total recall, minority report and final destination...but at no point does it feel like it's immitating, or ripping off these films.
Some fun predictability, good twists and revelations, and a few jokes....again, nice action sequences overall make for a pretty entertaining movie....

I just came back from watching Elektra...
Apart from the 101 things that get added/taken away and the standard messing up of the history that most comic to film movies always entail, I didn't mind it at all. (I have read most mainstream comics, so I cannot help but to notice these things)
Sure, I'd like to see Marvel go up to R18+ films someday, as titles like this would deserve, but for what it was, it's ok.
Simple plot, easy to follow...not dumb, yet not overly complex.
Great action scenes, some nice visuals too.
Elektra was portrayed far more efficiently in this movie than she was in daredevil, and even though played by Terence Stamp, (which I thought to be a pretty unusual choice) "Stick" was done very well...one of the better characterisations I've seen in this kind of movie.
I won't be rushing out to buy it on dvd, but it was overall pretty entertaining. People who liked her character in daredevil movie will most likely like her better in this one...

Angra, if you like DeNiro in horror, I saw a trailer at Elektra for a film called "Hide and Seek", looked kinda interesting, look up the trailer to watch if you can.

I just saw Canibal holocaust...for starters, the movie contained the real executions of at least two animals (I wasn't sure about the turtle), either way, I didn't like this.
I personally think the rest of the film is a little over-rated, weak, pointless storyline and for the better part, very shitty acting.
I was pretty bored most of the way through, even during the "snuff" type scenes, some of which were convincing, some were not. I dunno, I just founf it distasteful and not much more.
Sure, some gore freaks would have loved it no doubt, but personally, I don't give a shit to ever watch this movie again.

You can never leave the awesome Cannibal Holocaust unaffected by the experience.

The turtle was really killed by the cast members (whose acting is really very good, although their ethics in respect of the animal killings is questionable).

The "snuff" scenes you refer to (in the Road to Hell sequence?) is actually real footage of third-world executions.

Interestingly, these scenes are portrayed as fake in the movie, where conversely the "found" footage of Yates and his crew is suggested to be the authentic stuff (which, one supposes, some of it is considering the genuine animal slaughters... though more than one person has been convinced the cannibal killings were also real, hence the hightened furore over the film).

"Cannibal Holocaust" is prime Euro Exploitation!

Deodato made an exciting and thankfully serious movie.

The documentary footage looks suitably authentic with its light flares, scratches, jump cuts and ever-moving camera.
This technique also helps the gore effects to no end as Deodato chooses to film his gore scenes from a slight distance with unstable camera set ups.
Add to this the absence of garishly fake blood, and what you have are truly unnerving dismemberments and beheadings.

Wonderful score as well.

Cannibal Holocaust is difficult viewing i agree. The animal suffering is hard to stomach for sure.
Yet the film itself is a well made, multi-layered, exciting and ultimately satisfying wallow in the blood stained waters of extreme cinema.

A movie that's a very, very guilty pleasure.

Whatever the reasons...the same things have been said about horror films from day one!

YOU may piss on "C. Holo", but there are just as many people who woulld piss on a film you like and consider acceptable while screaming the same slogans of "disgusting and distasteful".

And in fact many horses used to be killed for Westerns. hence the banninig on tripping them up with ropes.
So lets slam and refuse to watch them as well.

HK films have been killing animals on film for decades, and they are still so cool and hip to johhny come lately fans.

And animals die worse deaths every day for your burgers.
Yes the animal snuff (although the turtle is actually a very fast death, they take the head off first) is very dubious and should be thought about...but that does not change the quality of the film it is in.
And a film should be judged as a whole.

And again, there are just as many 'others' out there who would vomit out venom with such power they make you look like a child...and it will be venom aiamed at a film you DO like and approve of.

The western thing bothered me as well, always has ...
If this was a forum about westerns trust me - it would have been mentioned when the question of animal cruelty comes up.
I cant stand it in any film and it bothers me enough to taint the film for me ... so it affects how i see the film as a whole.
The same way i felt about Apocolypse Now .. by the way.
Thats the one good use for CGI...

I can take fake gore ... i cant watch an animal get killed.
(and yes - i occasionally eat meat .. but i wouldnt go to the abbatoir as a source of entertainment - these arent films about the meat packing business)

I have C.H on laserdisc by the way .. I dont judge a film without seeing it. It's not all that brilliant of a film either way ..

And again, there are just as many 'others' out there who would vomit out venom with such power they make you look like a child...and it will be venom aiamed at a film you DO like and approve of.

this was a very odd thing to say ...
a little beneath you dont you think ?

I could care less if people dont agree with the films i like .. Actually I take that back .. i do care - and i enjoy it. I have enough knowledge and intelligence to get a dialogue going about it. It's not like a personal affront on me .. i didnt make the film, and I'm mature enough to realize that we all have different tastes.

I think you're a decent knowledgable contributer to the forum, I must say i'm a little suprised at how protective you are about your opinions to give such a knee-jerk reaction.

42ndStreetFreak
01-18-2005, 06:04 AM
I'm not protective of my opinions..just of these films.

And like Isaid, there are people out there who are experts, fanatic experts, at slamming ALL horror/exploitation films as the lowest of the low and would have basically all of them destroyed (Films were banned and BURNT/DESTROYED in the UK during the 'Nasties' craze..with people uttering the exact same descriptions used towards "C.Holo")..and I don't like to see this happen 'in-house'.

Dislike a film for the film's sake by all means....but slam it for the quality, or not, of the film as a whole.
Not for something you consider 'disgusting' to you personally...because that can work to both ways to much more extreme heights and can come back and bite you right in the arse.

When I reviewed "Can Holo" for 'Zombiekeeper' and one my site I gave it a very good review but criticised the attitiude towards the animals...but that does not change the film.
It's an aspect to comment on, but has nothing to do with how good or not the film is inthe final judgement. Just like any other film.

The Good Die Young". TOP NOTCH British thriller with a superb cast that QT must have seen at some point as there are some close links to "Reservoir Dogs" with a tale of a bunch of strangers coming together to pull a heist and we learn about their backgrounds before the job takes place.

But what a cast!
Laurence Harvey in his prime and dripping sophisticated sexuality as the cruel head of the gang.
The GREAT Stanley Baker in top 'hard guy with a heart' mode as a tragic ex-Boxer.
And supporting them we have John Ireland, Richard Basehart, a VERY young Joan Collins and a wonderfully horrible turn by Freda "Brides of Dracula" Jackson as Collin's manipulative Mother.
Nothing groundbreaking, but a solid watch and a great cast.

Why are you trying to take up for a film because somebody thinks it's disgusting and distasteful? that's just that person's opinion for some people that messes the whole movie up but for others it might've made the movie better.

for example i saw the others with a friend of mine just a few months ago and he didn't like it because he thinks ghost are real people who have died and deserve respect and to make a movie about ghost as entertainment was disrespectful to the dead so of course that screwed the whole movie up for him and he hated it but i loved it. He thought it was disrespectful and uncalled for much like someone said Cannibal Holocaust is distasteful and disgusting i don't agree with him and thought the film was great, you don't agree with the individual that gave those comments about Can Holo. but they're all opinions so why are you getting so bent out of shape about it?

saw Happy Hell Night yesterday and it was horrible and maybe i'm wrong but i thought it ripped off Halloween just a bit.

guy commits murder and is thrown into asylum for alot of year(can't remember specific amount) escapes on Halloween (which is also called hell night in the film because it's the same night that frat pleges get their initiation assignment) and starts a killing spree.

and if you don't believe in God then look at it this way we use animals for food which is needed to live on the other hand in this film animals were used for entertainment which is not needed for anything.

"Into The Mirror"..a south korean ghost movie..."It will do to mirrors what The Ring did to tvīs" was the teaser on the videocover..
That is of course not true but its a ok ghost movie..but not very scary though...It reminded me more of "the Phone" than "the Ring"....
It has a very modern look with fancy camera movement and trick shots...some impossible camera movements and if somebody remembers that trick shot from "the Matrix" were camera zoom in on a surveillance monitor and ends up with a normal shot...this is used many times....
