Mum & Dad

The ultimate in dysfunctional family life which has the nice twist of a regular family in an urban setting in the UK doing the nasty on an eastern european immigrant. Good performances and over the top in a strangely subtle way which allows you smile at the goings on while never finding them funny.

Well worth catching.

Quite good entertainment. I liked the rest of the movies, even though they don't have much to offer. I didn't expect a masterpiece, but I did expect some fast-paced racing and action - and that was exactly what I got.

A parasite has to jump from person to person to survive, killing the host when it leaves. No surprises here. Its two leads are adequate enough and the premise is a tried and tested one but its severely let down by some poor writing and stupid supporting characters. The film looks ok and the parasite involved is again ok but its not particularly interesting.

Great film, very clever mix of obsurd humour and brutality. It was really pleasing that it wasnt just a 'survival of the heroes' type and that it took time to show how people affected had their view of the reality distorted. Great story, good performances and the three directors involved paced the story well.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

This is a phenomenally creative work, and one of my very favorite Coen films. A lot of the brothers' work gets criticized for being too episodic, and sometimes that is the case, and it doesn't work. Here it does; the structure of the film, based on Homer's 'The Odyssey', allows for a segmented style which makes it easy to shift tones from humorous to tragic to scary, and back to humorous again without seeming to convoluted or bittersweet. These characters are actually caricatures, and it feels easy and right to flow between them and enjoy their quirks without investing too much in their ethics or morals. Lucky for us, the casting of the three convicts is as perfect as has ever been in a Coens film; Clooney is magnetic (without being flashy); Turturro is refreshingly normal- not too smart, but always skeptical; and Nelson is the heart of the trio, his idotic but sweet antics always in favor of good intention. This religious pilgrimage of sorts works mostly because the cast and crew had fun making it, and the evidence is all up on screen. With a fantastic soundtrack and thrilling laughs from start to finish, this is a must-see for all kinds of film lovers.

Los Olvidados (1952)

A gritty social drama which works in both a neorealistic manner and in a deeply personal surrealist fashion. The images on screen always seem like part of a documentary; the disturbing violence which fills the film works so naturally as a commentary on what murder means to us as spectators and what it means to the children who commit it here. There is no doubt of the effects it has: Jaibo's monsterous rage and desensitization works an opposition on us, and the toll that violence takes on little Pedro is also a heavy burden for us. Though this is presented mostly as a straightforward narrtive, Bunuel uses his surrealist touch to make dreams integral to feeling and symbols key to our understanding of the themes. Chickens are particularly recurring as a metaphor for weakness, and some of the most frightening scenes seem to take root around the naive animals. The most affecting scene in the film may be the last; a boy is animalized as the subject of a tragic act of maliciousness and the sequence is framed to be an identicle match of a similar one in the director's early documentary, 'Las Hurdes'. There are no compromises taken; sexual desire is handled in a barbarically fetishistic manner and motifs of cruelty flood the film's reels and corrupt us seemingly directly. This is an unflinching masterpiece from one of the art form's most provocative visionaries.

*note*: at this point in my life, I'd consider Bunuel my favortie filmmaker. He's profoundly changed the way I look at movies and also the way I'd like to go about making them in the next few years.

Inferno (1982)

On the whole, this is a pretty awesome achievement. It's nightmarish and theatrical, playing out with a kind of divine staginess made stylish by a lighting scheme almost on par with 'Suspiria' and camera angles Carol Reed would admire. Argento always refers to this as one of his most accomplished visions, and it's easy to see why. It is a piece which fits perfectly into the director's puzzle of a career and works not only as the middle segment in the "Three Mothers" trilogy but also as a frightening work on its own. The first twenty minutes of the film are some of Argento's very finest (and scariest), but the film keeps at an even pace until its fiery conclusion.

Undead (2003)

I'd heard bad things bout this so I wasn't really expecting much...turnmed out to be a pleasant surprise. A new concept for a zombie flick - didn't always work, but at least it was vaguely original. The script was pretty hit-and-miss but had some really witty moments. A dumb movie that knows it's dumb and has ALOT of fun with itself.

Overall I really enjoyed it. One complaint - and this goes for all low-budget horror flick - if you don't have the money and/or know-how to make your CGI look decent, DON'T USE ANY. The gore/set-pieces in this one could (for the most part) have been done with practical effects, but they went for really bad CGI instead. Blech.

I loved it. It's my favorite movie of the year so far, though nobody else seems to like it as much as I did. Seth Rogen's character was so fucked up and kept me interested. Now, that part I can forgive - you're right, it fit with the overall ridiculousness of the movie. It's the CGI gore that pissed me off. I mean, they were obviously going for an early Peter Jackson vibe - why not use the REAL red stuff? Shameful and lazy, in my opinion.

There's no mind-fuck like a good time-travel flick - this fits the bill for sure. The script is very tightly written and keeps adding layers to the plot right up to the very end, and the director keeps everything moving along at a perfect pace. Plus the lead actor - Karra Elejalde - is absolutely brilliant in his role...he really carries the film on his shoulders, and creates a fascinating and incredibly complex character.

Bf is making me sit through it right now. He grew up watching the manga, so he felt like he just had to see what they did to the movie he had so much hope for...

Needless to say, he's chain smoking and on the verge of tears. :p
I LOVED and still do, the manga and anime. I thought that the movie was way to rushed. There was no, Krillin, no Tien. The fight scenes were OK. I know it's just a kids film, but damn. The only characters i thought were done right, were Roshi and Piccolo. Haha, and there is supposed to be a trilogy. Another thing, Goku? In high school? Being picked on by stupid jocks? WTF? I guess, they changed the story a bit, or were trying to be creative, so i give them kudos for that, but jesus. Bulma was done alright. Ehhh. Tell your BF it's alright. I feel his pain.

End nerd rant. If that's a rant.

Fairly run of the mill indie horror that's only saving grace was plenty of nasty splatter. The story felt like a nod in Clive Barker's direction. But I could still see the potential for the director to put out something great with their future work.

Against the Dark.

this 'steven seagal' film is the worst piece of shit excuse for an "i am legend" ripoff - ever.

Yeh I was pretty disappointed with this one but still enjoyed it for its sheer shitness. Pistol Whipped wasn't to bad (the out of shape Seagal siuted the character and Lance Henrikson is always great) and I thought Shadow Man was a step in the right direction. I've been rocking thru a few of his more recent efforts and one complaint I have is that they don't have the over the top violence that really made me a fan of his early films. Above The Law, Hard To Kill, Marked For Death and Out For Justice are really classic action flicks and I'm hoping that given the chance he'll have a return to form. A lot of his later flicks are miles ahead of Van Damme's later output with the exception of Wake Of Death.

i've been getting all of these recent straight to dvd releases at well just to see the awsomness of how badly he's willing to portray himself.

At the first half the story progressed promisingly...few decent gory death scenes, surprise scares and quiet moments pretty nicely build the tensions and I was expecting to see another fine scary flick from Korea after last year's The Loner (Woetoli). But the ending turned into a mess & frustrating, cause it really could have been another great Asian Horror movie. There were some parts of the story that left unanswered and unexplained or else I failed to understand.

All that work and end it w/ an alien/sci-fi Scanners duel ripoff. That was horrible. i think that the premise of the ending was fine, but the way it was played out just reeked of Scanners. i just think the the direction could have given it a different feel and appearance. Repulsion (1965)

A film made essential via Catherine Deneuve's intensely deteriorative performance and Polanski's patient touch. As he has proven throughout his career, Polanski is the master of the slow-burn, always careful not to prematurely answer too many questions or spring too many surprises; instead, he sprinkles his touches throughout his films so that his audience is anxious for them at all times. This film is often categorized as "surrealist", but I don't think a descriptor like that fits. The film, instead, is realism through the eyes of a nightmare's victim, and no matter how jarring or disturbing a sequence might appear, its existance is logical to this poor girl's repressive life. A stunning character study and a daring sexual journey.

Wild Strawberries (1957)

A gentle but critical look at the reflections of an old man as he waits for death. Bergman has a great love for Dr. Borg, a character who is so fleshed out he must be modeled after the filmmaker's own soul. Through dreams and memories- often a delightful combination of the two of them- we feel as though we've grown beside this man his entire life, and when we gaze at past relationships and guilts it is as though we have seen them before and are now looking at them with Borg in a new light; it is as though we are just as obligated to accept these memories as bygone experiences just as he is. The cinematography is gorgeous and the camera moves with an otherwordly grace. Though this is a film so early in a career, it has the seeming wisdom of a life-long philosopher.

Videodrome (1983)

Not only a bizarre trip but a scathing indictment of entertainment itself, and one that rings frighteningly prophetic today. Like 'Network', this film dissects the boundaries that are constantly being pushed by audience cravings and greedy producers by overexaggerating them; where 'Network' worked as biting satire, Cronenberg uses horror and science-fiction genre tools to turn his view on the future of media into a nightmare. There are several key elements that make the film work- perhaps the most important one is James Woods. Cronenberg's films often call for brain-dead, dry, even dull central characters; while this is usually for the enhancement of the screenplay, the actors he often casts range from boring to atrocious. Woods fills this part perfectly- his natural charisma and charm immediately grap our attention and care, but he is also not afraid to be used as a tool, a machine, a monster. The quick pace and expert special effects make this an essential Cronenberg movie, and one of his masterworks.

I don't recall hating Howard the Duck, but can't much recall anything else about it so for me I guess it wasn't a thing of greatness.

I just saw

Some spoilers here so I'll white-out

Fast and Furious - While it was good to see a "true" sequel to the first one in terms of events and characters, I didn't really like this...actually found it boring in a lot of parts, after the setup, the plot basically consisting of "lets go find this guy, we've gotta go find this guy...etc etc etc". Some nice cars but by comparison to the other films not really. It was ok...the girl will probably end up buying it, I wouldn't otherwise bother.

xmen origins - wolverine
Ok...hated what they did with deadpool, HATED HATED HATED...and cmon, take away HIS mouth? Ridiculous and character spoiling rubbish. This was just terrible. Ryan reynolds about had his character right too...and the thing with his face? WHY? Why couldn't they leave him the bitter, crazy, mush faced self loathing abomination he was meant to be? Instead we got as watered down, brainwashed and altered a character as the "sabertooth" was in x-men 1.
If you want to see a half decent deadpool, watch the animated feature "wolverine vs hulk".
Preferred the portrayal of sabertooth in this film, but was annoyed at there being any kind of decency or honour to him. Just not right.
Gambit was ok, but kept slipping into the wrong accent...and didn't steal a thing...no huge complaints though.
Wolverine - while his "origins" story was briefly visited, his post weapon x rage/animal stage was completely eradicated. He was a ravaging maniacal animal when he escaped, and killed everyone up in there. The old couple substituting for the people (alpha flight for those that means anything to) who actually found him was alright, but at least they could've been there to "show him humanity again" but fuck, they didn't even need to as it turns out.
No berserker rage...if ever there was a time.
Other than the above mentioned, and some time/event/character changes and errors. it wasn't a bad film.
Just, as a fan of the comic, hard to look past THAT much liberty being taken.
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a great film, I liked the wolverine I've seen in the prior x-men films more, but hey, Jackman played him as well as usual I guess.
Some good fights, nice stunt coreography, and interesting effects.
While I want to say I didn't dislike this film at all, I will say that I was disappointed, it felt as though someone with no knowledge or love of the comic series stepped in and wrote a pretty long fan-fic...not a bad one, but I don't think it was handled right.

I have higher hopes for the rumoured Magneto origins film.

Okay im a fan of RE games. This movie was the closest thing to the game I've seen. Theres only a few problems. Leon looked like a girl. Zombies were only in it for 20 mins, and last well I would of loved to see more of the original people in there. Maybe some Claire Redfield, Wesker, and Chris Redfield. Twilight:

So i have been putting off seing this for a very long time. I just made fun of the movie based on reviews for the longest time but some Twilight fans started calling me a hypocrite. I decided to read the first book just to see how bad Stephanie Meyer butchered vampires. Just as Stephen King said, her writing is atrocious. It's an okay concept for a story but has been done a thousand times by one thousand times better authors. If you're a fan of Ann Rice then the Twilight series is going to be a huge, dumbed down disappointment to you.

The movie has me torn though. The first three quarters of the book are squished into the first half of the movie, and the first quarter of the movie is absolutely cheesy. The acting is so over done, and the facial expressions are so forced it made me want to cry. The last half of the movie was pleasant. From the baseball scene forward I was genuinely interested and sort of into it. The acting just got so much better, and the characters were closer to the book. A lot less silliness in general. Kristen Stewart is really good at tripping over heself and looking like a dorky teenager too. I have to admit I was entertained.

roseyred
04-29-2009, 11:49 PM
Ohhh i knew you would be. Everything you said about it was how i felt as well. The baseball scene is my favorite part. I thought it was the best put together scene in the whole movie actually, everything else was kinda lame. I wonder if kristen stewart will ever be able to play another character though? In new moon she has alot more of a character i think. Im sort of hoping they stick with the book more. I read something saying edward was suppose to be actually scary in new moon. We'll see..

Ya baseball scene was my favourite. It played up on the family dynamic really well, and also brought out more about each character. Like Rosalie being a bitch, Alice being graceful etc. Would have liked to see more of Aice and Bella's relationship. AND worst part is the ending bit about Alice getting left out. That was the only part about the whole book that genuinely shocked me and they just scrapped it for the movie. I am almost a pissed of (not quite a fan) fan girl about that.

A Tale of Two Sisters. The cinamatography was amazing in how it was soaked in such rich colors. The acting was solid and the direction was great. The story was pretty decent.

***Spoiler alert***

In all due respect, i started to get a little lost towards the end, which was likely due to the reading of subtitles and not the movie. This became especially troubling when i could not figure out who was supposed to have been dead for so long. i also thought that there could have been more to the story than just a severe case of schizophrenia/personality disorder. Kudos in the way they tidied up the story in the end, and how they left the two potential creatures (under the sink and in a cabinet i think) without explanation. i just think that the storied could have relied less heavily on a mental disorder and could have been built up a little in some other way. Just my opinion and i'm sure many will not agree with me but hey, to each his own. Ashe.

Well, I quite liked this one just a tad more when I was a kid, and I'd have to say it's something of a great kids, or, "family" comedy/fantasy flick. Pretty funny, still an entertaining watch.

13 Ghosts - I like this one...don't find it that scary, or much at all, but I really like a lot of the visual aspects of this one. Wouldn't mind checking out more like it. Anyone noticed that the gear machine thingy in it strongly resembles Lions Gate films opening sequence? (or likewise)

I'm all for weird movies...but this one I honestly found a bit boring.
The effects and makeup were very good for their time, and sure there's a set of nice tits walking around most of the film. I appreciated the alternative take on "vampires" but I found the storyline a little hard to follow in terms of how the bodyjumping/memory retention worked, and the whole story just, didn't do a whole lot for me.

And your thoughts?

Pretty solid entertainer.

Deviates from the Origins story slightly but thats to develop the characters a bit more for the sake of the script, IMO. All other X-Men characters are cameos really...just included for the sake of being included. Gambit had next to nothing to do on-screen - no thievery antics, no accent, Deadpool was routine, Silverfox comes and goes in the space of 20-odd minutes...too many characters within the last 35-40 minutes, and very little to do.

Its a story centered on Logan and Victor, thats about it. Best parts of the movie are when Victor is around. Liev Schrieber is pretty good, and his chemistry with Hugh Jackman is what makes this movie enjoyable. To be summed in a single line - its basically an extension of the dream sequences which Logan had in X2: X-Men United.

I d give it 3.5 out of 5.

Search for Beauty (1934)

Not a lot to say about this one really...it was solid, but nothing overly special. Worth seeing for its historical value by showing just how much skin and sex Hollywood could get away with in the pre-code era - it's ultra tame by today's standards, but holy shit this is racy for 1934 - beyond that it's fairly run of the mill. The actors range from good to mediocre, and the script has moments of being both incredibly witty and equally clunky.

No major flaws, but not much to make it stand out either.

The Eye (2002). i liked this movie, but was not really scary. Just a good story that pretty well put together about the supernatural.. Ashe.

Actually, I watched a bit of X3 the other night after having seen wolverine...seriously, when you compare where better the character was portrayed, the xmen films have it by far.
and yeah...deadpool wasn't even deadpool, any fan of the character will hate all but about the first 5 minutes of the character.
The Sabretooth/Logan thing was alright, but things happened there that just wouldn't.

(***POSSIBLE HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD***)

Which ending did you see?

Mine was Weapon XI's hand coming out of the wreckage and reaching for his head.

Cold Prey

Very good slasher/stalker flick. Set in a remote mountain lodge somewhere in Norway, five snowboarders seek refuge after an accident and find they are not alone.
Its a standard set up but it looks fantastic. The performances are solid and tension is well maintained. Worth watching

The Ruins

Wasnt expecting too much but was pleasantly surprised. Six people in Mexico visit a remote (that word again) Mayan ruin and start to explore the site. Suddenly they run into some local villagers who quarantine them in the ruins. They soon learn why!
Not an average horror film, nice bit of paranoia and there are a couple of brutal set pieces which are well worth putting the DVD player on slo-mo. Its different enough to be interesting and the actors are capable enough with a well paced story.

The Night of the Living Dead (1990)

We've all seen it and know how good it is.

Wolverine..

we all watched the leaked workprint several weeks ago (couldnt resist)
but it didnt diminish the theatre experience at all.

it was a different movie on the big screen and we all enjoyed it like it was the first time.

not the be all and end all of comic book movies - it was still a lot of fun.

Already seen the leaked work print. I don't know whether its for the unfinished/unedited effects or the story...I couldn't enjoy it all. The story was the major disappointment but anyway I'll give it another watch after its original dvd release.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

if it wasn't for the "aging backwards" spin, it would have been a pretty dull story.

on a par with the original.

What I liked about it was the fact that both films work very well together as a double bill. The second one doesnt disappoint whatsover...its at par with the original.

Good to see fresh takes by the Europeans (French and now the Norwegians) on the worn-out slasher subgenre.

Pulse/Kairo (2001). i had high expectations for this movie and was not let down. The creepy and bleak atmosphere was unrelenting.

City of God/Cidade de Deus (2002). Great movie about life and death in the slums of Brazil just outside of Rio de Janeiro. Did not seem like a two hour movie. Love the manner in which this story was told as as well. Not horror, but no lack of violence. Ashe.

I watched the Workprint too. I haven't gotten a chance to see the theatrical release, though I'm going to. I didn't particularly care for it, other than Reynolds.

Did I miss something or was John Wraith completely pointless?

As was Gambit and The Blob.

I didnt see any reason for Gambit being in it, except that fans of the first 3 movies were clamouring for him. That being said, they completely mashed his character.

The Blob was like Venom in Spider-Man 3, put in to spice up the fights and satisfy crazed comicbook fans.

If you want to enjoy this movie, watch it without being biased towards the comics.

It just seemed like his role in the raid was thrown in last minute. He stops the guy they're after from getting the gun from under his desk. Wade could have done that.

The whole raid seemed kind of dumb too. They send in Wade, a guy who is really good at deflecting bullets, but I'm pretty sure he's not invulnerable at this point. When they have Logan and Creed, who can heal after being shot. I can see where Agent Zero and Bolt fit in.

V, I saw the "other" ending/s.
Don't worry, it's not any more spoiled than the rest of what they did with that character. While I'll probably buy the dvd a while after it's released, just to see the "complete" version, I still don't think it'll be among my Marvel top 5 by a long shot.

Watched Day of the Dead, the 2008 version.
Not that bad, interesting way they spun the remake keeping elements similar but storyline completely different. Thus far I haven't REALLY liked either of the "days" in all honesty. This one, as I said was ok. Not bad as "contagium", not as good as Dawn '04. Worth it if you haven't seen it, and now it's ridiculously cheap in some dvd places I've seen so maybe worth grabbing.

That makes me wonder...I know Snyder was going to do another zombie film that's now been delayed, and supposedly NOT the "sequel" to his dawn...but was there ever/is there a planned sequel to that one? I'd really like to see that, maybe even more'n whatever Romero wants to throw out next.
