Malena.

This is such a beautiful, heart-warming and touching experience. Anyone who compares this to Summer of '42 needs to see it first, because Malena is a notch above. It makes you go through a range of emotions - innocence, sensuality, happiness, pain, sorrow, rage...the list is endless. It is a coming-of-age movie yes, but it also has so many other underlying currents riding along that it touches and grips you, and doesn't let go.

And of course, the stunningly beautiful goddess, Monica Bellucci, whom I absolutely adore. She conveys so much with her silence and downcast eyes, its a wonder how this magnificent lady hasn't had more character-driven roles in her career yet.

The direction and cinematography are gorgeous, but watch the movie for Monica, her simplicity, and her amazing chemistry with the boy.

Recommended as a must-watch for all lovers of finesse in cinema.

tystnaden (the silence) (1963)

holy smokes, how wonderful. as soon as it was over, i watched it again.
one of the few bergman films i hadn't yet seen, and it pretty much just shot right up there with my favorites.

a starkly surreal, spiritual drama involving two estranged sisters, an innocent boy, troubadour dwarves, and a kindly (yet creepy) hotel porter, among other things.

highly, highly recommended

okay.

so i'd seen this already about five or six years ago.
i remember being incredibly disturbed and perplexed by it.
i wondering if, perhaps, it wouldn't be as shocking as i remembered it.

wrong.

it's interesting how pasolini uses gorgeous composition and setting to contrast the atrocities committed in the film. it gives the whole film a necessary detachment.

it really is a pretty brilliant (albeit miserable and terrifying) piece of angry, angry filmmaking.

French psycho-thriller from Michael Haneke. Very atmospheric, and very disturbing. There is an undercurrent of foreboding throughout the ending which makes for some really gripping viewing.

The camerawork and direction is top-notch, and Auteuil & Binoche are perfectly casted into two very fantastic performing roles. And the ending leaves you thinking...with a myriad of possible answers to all the puzzles which lingers in your brain.

Watch this one, for its different than the rest. A thought-provoking, moody and serious piece of cinema.

I rented this years ago after missing it at the cinema, and this is my story...

So, I was watching it, but then around 30 minutes in the dvd froze, I took it back but they only had that one copy, a few months later I found it in another store, but when I went to the counter the didn't actually have the disk. So then earlier this year there was a dvd rental store closeing down and they had a copy with out a cover for 1 pound, but I had no money on meand got them to hold it for me.

But the next 2 days I spent away and then moved to another part of town. By the time I got back to that store they had closed down.

Just last week I was talking to a girl at work who mentioned she used to work at the store that closed and I told her my tale...

She actually had a copy and lent it to me, it is sitting besdie me and I'm finally going to watch it in full tomorrow.

I'm also very much common with this type of tragedies!:o Like every time I bought the ICHI THE KILLER dvd, I couldn't able to finish it somehow. Finally I figure out that the whole lot of the Malaysian reprints of this movie available here...have some problems! Recently the same thing is starts to happening with another movie: TRAPPED ASHES (2006). First time the dvd didn't run on the player, then yesterday when I changed it form the rental store then it froze at the 3rd story of it's anthology. Though the movie so far sucks but I still like to finish this crap. :)

About once a month, I gather with a group of friends and we watch movies all night. usually truly bad horror movies and we just rip them to shreds (think MST3K without the robots). This month however we had a good movie night and decided on a John Carpenter/Kurt Russel mini marathon:

1 "Escape From New York" (my personal favorite Carpenter film)
2. "Big Trouble In Little China" (I forgot how much fun this movie was)
3. "The Thing" (best monster movie ever)

I said it. It just looks campy to me in juxtaposition to the extremely dark realism the rest of the film follows.

That salvaged, perfectly round, white as a pearl eyeball should not be there amongst the absolute wreckage of the surrounding face- especially considering the eyeball should have gone first.

Just an opinion. Loved the film.

I never knew he was Choptop until about 2 years ago!! Have you ever heard his band with buckethead, cornbugs LOL?

I also want to add that I thought I never liked Sherri moon but after watching this I thought she was so hot and I wish I had a hot girlfriend that wouldn't mind leaving up the halloween decorations year round. As far as having a psychotic family, it would make me sick knowing what they were doing but I guess I could deal with it.

wow, what a blast!
a fantastical, humorous, and touching story that plays out in both fantasy and reality.
solid acting and an excellent story provide a strong foundation upon which stunning visuals and gorgeous compositions are layered, and layered, and layered.

my problem with the cell was that while it looked fantastic, the story was kind of lame. really nothing there other than an incredible look. it always felt very hollow.
however, tarsem singh got it right this time, in a big way.

Sat down with the wife last night and enjoyed this. Snipes was coolness personified as the comic hero, plus some really good background music and choreographed moves (combined with CGI) made this a chic entertainer, from start to finish.

-Christopher Plummer, James Mason

Plot Synopsis: IMDB
Sherlock Holmes is drawn into the case of Jack the Ripper who is killing prostitutes in London's East End. Assisted by Dr. Watson, and using information provided by a renowned psychic, Robert Lees, Holmes finds that the murders may have its roots in a Royal indiscretion and that a cover-up is being managed by politicians at the highest level, all of whom happen to be Masons. Homes races to save the life of Annie Crook who has been forcibly incarcerated in an insane asylum and that of her friend Mary Kelly, in whom she has entrusted her secret.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show,FINALLY.It was amazing to say the least. In my top favorite movies now,and Tim Curry is now my favorite actor ever.

I can't believe it's being remade though.

i dont have a problem with this being remade.. and i do love the origional.

i'd be interested to see what a new genreation does with it - and who would be cast.

i just hope they dont fall into the stupid trend of trying to come up with new songs.

@ neverending,i agree also.

I would too,i just hope they don't and i mean the kids, say the original sucks because its old and not even give that one a chance. No matter how good or horrible the new one is.Which is what some will do.But some will see it for the first time and be like that is an amazing movie and i mean the original. The remake might be good though.Im going to try and have an open mind about remakes for once. The movie didnt do anything to anyone, its the creators that tarnished the legacy, even though we still have the old one.I'm going to try and give remakes a chance though, and look at them as their own movies, and try not to go in there(immerse myslf in it,thats what i do) and hate it automaticlly.I know that's what some people will do,but that's up to them, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.I wish they wouldnt bash the remake though, even though they didnt even see it.It's wrong to have that much hate over something and just take it for what it is.Dont get pissed off about it,watch the original or spend some time with your family or do what you love, because that level of hate aobut anything is unessacary.

Well, it's being produced by MTV- so you can forget your fantasies about Burton & Depp.

Kanye West, maybe?

And there WILL be new songs.

Well, me and the wife sat down to watch Cloverfield and about a good 20-25 minutes into it (the Brooklyn Bridge-crossing scene), she said that it was too loud, and wanted to see a more mellowed-down movie.

Naturally, I gave her a blast...sheesh, anyway she agreed to give it another shot soon, so instead we sat down again and watched this :

There's Something About Mary.

Still as good as the last time I saw it...some of the scenes very outrageous, and very funny. Although some gags pushed the limits, overall there's something about this movie which makes you like it a lot, whoever you may be.

Rating - * * * ½

i had never seen it in its entirety, it was really slow except for the final gun battle.
I was totally stoked with the end. i really wish the film had more action, with an all star cast like it had, it would have been perfect.

I dont see how anyone could really enjoy this movie...it's certainly well made and VERY well acted, but to call it depressing would be an injustice to just how grim this movie is.

For all the brutal, gory, violent and depraved horror movies I've seen, I can't think of a single moment more disturbing than a certain prolonged shot in this film (I wont spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but if you have you know exactly what I'm talking about).

It's not a pleasant movie...but it is supremely affecting.

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town

Had to offset that last one with something a little bit happier - and what better than a Frank Capra flick?

I saw the Adam Sandler version when it first came out, totally unaware it was a remake (I was 11 at the time, give me a break). Needless to say, this version puts Sandler in his place.

Gary Cooper was utterly spectacular. This is the only movie that I've seen him in, but he stole the show from beginning to end. Easily one of the greatest performances that I've ever sen in a comedy, bar none.

Capra movies ALWAYS put me in a good mood, and this is one of his best that I've seen so far :)

yeah..that was horrifying indeed in a true manner! It's a film without any 'cinematic' consequences but harsh & depressing reality.

I caught 10 minutes of this on comedy central or sci fi about 7 years ago, and the title alone pissed me off. I turned the channel after about 10 minutes i was so fucking angry that someone with money thought it was a good enough movie to produce.
