Monster Man
WAY better than I expected...Many of you probably won't like it (cuz there are so many picky people here :p), but it was different, funny, and had plenty of really good gore...It was a little slow at first, not too bad though, moved really well for about the entire last half hour...Honestly, I just really liked this movie and Dustin did, too.
Every time we are renting movies at the Movie Gallery (free rental weekends) I want to pick this up, and my husband always ignores me....LOL...Now thanks to your post, I may be able to convince him that it couldn't possibly be as bad as he believes it is. :p Thanks Rayne. ;)

I think we may have similar tastes in movies (which is kinda rare :D), or maybe we're just willing to give some things a chance when others won't (and yes I have seen some MAJOR crap because of it, but also caught a few good ones that I may not have seen if I were more selective).
If we DO have similar tastes, I know you'll like this one. Not sure about your man, but who knows? He may end up liking it, too :)

Yes, I am willing to give just about anything a chance really. Because I have fun with it, even a lot of the REALLY bad ones, I know they are bad, but they are just so funny.....;) Usually as long as I am entertained, I am happy....and yep, I have caught some pretty decent films that I would missed otherwise. Its way later than I should be up, but I think I might start The Mist in a minute...I stupidly rented it today, thinking I'd have time to watch it and utterly forgetting how much stuff I actually needed to get done. Its due back tomorrow night, so at the very least I think I'll start it so I get SOME of my money worth...

i hated Juno ..
(except the mom and dad)
every word that came out of her mouth made me want to push her down a stairwell.
this 'hip-hollywood' way of talking is pure bullshit ... i dont find it charming or endearing, i find it pretentious and contrived - and sadly enough i've been exposed to people who try to portray themselves in this way.
phony assholes.

Unusually fresh, really gawky...and handling of a very delicate subject matter in the plot with a very good deft touch. Kudos go to the script-writers and the director. This movie has one thing which most movies lack - a heart. :)

Although ***POSSIBLE SPOILER*** the alien creature shown at the end was such a disappointment after all that build-up. It practically brought the whole movie crashing down.

besides the misleading ad campaign - there were tons of things i hated about the movie.
i thought the performances were wooden (esp the howard girl and Hurt)
there were parts of the story that were just too stupid for words.
(oh - we keep the monster costumes hidden in the same room as where we routinely punish the nut job)
the need to make red a key colour again ... the self serving cameo ..
the film as a whole felt lazy and over confident.
in any genre - there was no payoff.

Well um.... That was the most predictable film ever made. It was... exactly what I was expecting, and it delivered just so. It's My Super Sweet 16 meets a lifetime *thriller*. It blew, in all ways. However, I ALMOST enjoyed about 7 minutes total of it. It sucks completely, but there's one ALMOST decent kill (its not inventive though, just the blood effect was cool). By the way, the trailer is exactly what you get in the film. The *scariest part* is where you see his hand reach toward her in the dark... and it wasn't even remotely thrilling... sooo:

Is it the only copy/version of the film available on dvd?
Guess that's a bitch if so...can't say I've ever seen it, but I'm interested, and I've only ever heard good things.
I watched a movie I recently picked up for $1 on vhs.
Now, I'd seen this movie when I was about 11, and hadn't thought about it in AGES - I remember I thought it was interesting, not much more.
Now it IS A movie with Meryl Streep, which in general I wouldn't usually hold in highest regard in terms of my personal taste, but this one always grabbed me.
It's called "Defending your life" and the majority of the film takes place in the first stages of ones afterlife.
It's a unique take on life/death and really quite funny, warming and all that.
IMO, this here teeters between romance, comedy, chick flick, and sci-fi.
I'd reccomend it to anyone who's not yet seen it, it's the kind of movie that I think a lot of people would enjoy.

Shine a Light (2008)
Breathtaking! The ferocious energy and ageless passion that is splattered across the stage is something that could only be found in the Rolling Stones, and, in their mid-sixties the guys have better stage presence than most modern musicians. Scorsese pours his soul into capturing the best possible view at every second of the concert, presenting every member of his audience with the best seat in the house. The IMAX experience makes the entire experience absolutely unreal. It's a gas.

I liked the movie though, good atmosphere.
Probably one of the best "horror" films I've seen in some time.
...I have to say in all honesty that as soon as the "act" was under consideration, I could kind of see the "end" coming, in one way or another.
But yeah, overall, good feel to the movie.
It's funny, but if you made this film from a military/scientic character perspective, it would've been very like half-life, eh?

I became significantly less pumped when I saw Ozymandias + Silk Spectre...blech. Nite Owl looks pretty faithful to the book, but sadly that look REALLY doesn't look so great in real life.
That said, they NAILED Rorschach and The Comedian, so who knows. Its a safe bet that it wont be anywhere near the book, but it could turn out half decent.

The Dead Girl – a crime story about a murdered girl, her killer, and the people who interact with her life. Told in Rashomon-style disjointed narrative. Very good stuff. And with the huge casts of stars (Brittany Murphy, Marcia Gay Harden, Toni Collette, Giovanni Ribisi, Josh Brolin, and more) hard to believe that it seems to have gotten little or no theater release. Worth a watch.

This movie was absolutely amazing. Definitely appealed to my melancholic existential senses. It's another indie look at the afterlife; the afterlife for suicides. It's dark, it's funny, the characters are interesting, quirky, and well-acted. The soundtrack is fucking amazing. AND Tom Waits is in it.

Nice piece of 70s Euro horror. I first heard about it when QT was promoting the LA Grindhouse festival in Mar-Apr last year, and this was chosen as one of the screened movies.
The movie on DVD looks absolutely gorgeous. The plot and characterisation isn't much to write about, but the experience is fairly enjoyable. Its made by a Spanish guy and has Spanish stars (with two very good-looking females), and some scenes will make gore lovers very happy, specially a long scene involving unflinching mutilation!!
Overall, it was good...without leaving an impression. Half-decent, if you don't take the scripting into consideration.
Jenna, Rayne and Des...take note. I bet Z has already seen this, if not...then recommended to him too.

Naked Lunch
and
The Descent
The first, by Cronenberg, is sure to mess with your mind. Pretty disgusting stuff, lots of references to homosexuality, I think it's about the inability to escape from a painful reality, even through drugs. Don't try to make too much sense out of this movie or you'll get a headache. But it's good. Real good.
About The Descent, I enjoyed it because there wasn't a single man in it (human) and that's not very usual. Also, I'm a girl and identified with the group. The whole claustrophobic thing creeped me out. Ok actresses, some scares, lots of tension and a surprising ending (at least for me). Not bad at all, saw it at night and it gave me nightmares.

I'm gonna agree with you here. I also was a bit disappointed in Hot Fuzz. I think the reason is Simon Pegg played it too straight and serious through 3/4 of the movie.

shutter, the bank job, and *oh yes* Sweeny Todd...
To all of you fans of the unholy trinity that is tim burton, danny elfman, and johnny depp, may you live in your self-made prison forever.
To what matters;
Bank job was okay, but it lacked something a jason statham film usually has... explosions? regardless, worth the ticket, maybe not the dvd.
Shutter was good, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. the rape might have been the issue, but what i really think bothered me was the general stereotype against Asian horror films. I don't think that it's bad to use somethings over and over, like features of the object you should fear, but it does grab at monotony sometimes

With so many poor attempts at adapting this material to live action films and shorts it's a little surprising to me that an animated feature not only thrills more capably than those botched efforts but also tells a more mature story. I really enjoyed this one and I've never been a follower of the comics so I can't tell you how faithful it is to the source material but I can tell you that it's a well paced animated feature that doesn't insult the viewers intelligence. The social commentary wasn't very well masked but in the end it didn't really distract from the overall feel of the experience.

Anyway...
Reeker - Pretty fun watch but very similar to Dead End.
Next - Meh. Hated the ending.
Grease - Now I know why it's a classic.
Fracture - Again, not really my type of shit, but not a bad watch.

yeah - i didnt like it at all.
i think the girl is capable of good things but that was the worse written bullshit pretentious character i've ever seen. so forced i'd be suprised if she didnt get hemmeroids in her mouth.
saddest thing is how everyone though that she was so cool and will now go around trying to immitate the way she talks.

À l'intérieur (Inside)
Wow...
This film is brutal and it may be a bit much for some people, even a couple of the folk that grace this board. There were some flaws such as a spot or two of bad CGI but it really didn't have that big of an effect on the film as a whole. Béatrice Dalle was INSANE and played her role to perfection, really standing out from the rest of the cast even though all that actors delivered competent performances. A very dark, very gruesome film and I thoroughly recommend it to all the people on here who really enjoy gore in their thriller/horror films. Maybe not for you Urge, even though Betty is it.

Two more people are in the dirt where they belong now. People are finally getting taken out in groups which means that soon, this hunting zone will have a lovely carpet of red foliage. It also means that I will be able to go home. Earlier we were told of another twist, another little hitch in the game that’s supposed to scare us. Seems to be another presence out there now, not some silly assassin trying in vain to scare us but a real hunter… a predator. Now the hunting zone has been divided and we have to be careful about where we go to kill, or in some cases hide. No more will a hunter with a rocket launcher feel shielded from harm and the hunted may stand no chance now. I can’t wait to win and go home but I think I may be more excited about the possibility of so many more corpses. I don’t know why but the prospect of lining up a row of bodies that belonged to the people I ate with and walked past earlier, people who I’m “friends” with and people I’m making plans against really gets the blood running through my veins. These pages I’ve been leaving around were meant to be found after the game was over but after checking a few spots last night I think somebody has been reading my little journal. I hope somebody finds this one soon because I’d like them to get a chance to know how I feel before they’re eviscerated. Or maybe instead of “they” I should say… you.

"Meet the Spartans".
A (very) few funny moments, but as ever, bored more than anything when I see this group of films...These guys really oughta get over the carmen electra chick...
Agreed with the critics about the "too gay" orientation of the jokes, or at least way too much reference to the same joke.
300, guys in their underwear, gay, right? ... ...yeah, we know...what an annoying highschool kid of a waaayyy too long joke they made that.
Most of the pop references were just dumb, waaay way way behind the times, and not really funny at all.
One redeeming feature - better than date movie.
That's about all I feel like I can say there.
We make our own jokes about this stuff - which is why nothing seems fresh from this crew whatsoever.
