I recently looked back at a couple of comedy horrors from the 1980s, "House II: The Second Story," and "Deadtime Stories" from 1986. They ae both just as fun and awesome as I remember them in my opinion, and always fun to look back at! Those who have not seen those don't know what they are missing! ::danger::

TANYA'S ISLAND (1980). Albert Sole (ALICE, SWEET ALICE) directed this odd yet interesting film that has an ending that sort of negates the whole thing. Tanya (DD Winters who later changed her name and found fame as Vanity) is experiencing difficulty in her professional and personal life. She and her boyfriend-who is an absolute shithead-go to an island and problems begin when she encounters an ape. The Ape costume is a collaboration between Rick Baker and Rob Bottin-good job on what was surely a low budget shoot-and for those interested in these things, You see an AWFUL lot of Vanity...no wonder Prince wanted to work with her! ***

DANGEROUS CARGO (1977). By the numbers actioneer of a ship transporting Nitroglycerine/Guns. A Replacement Bosun is working undercover for a Terrorist group to use the cargo for nefarious ends. Watching this, it seems the crew spends the majority of their time brawling, dancing and gambling-how do they ever get anything done? Main interest would be one of Deborah Shelton's (TV'S DALLAS and DePalma's BODY DOUBLE) very first films where She is the "Captain's Wife"-indeed, No names for anyone here-who has to use all the weapons at her disposal when things turn south. LOTS of nudity here and Deborah (or "Debbie-Miss USA") was obviously used for Window Dressing, which if You are a Fan makes this worth a watch. You can also marvel how long her hair was at this time. **

Blood Rage (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085253/?ref_=rvi_tt) is an example of 80s slashers at their worst. Wooden acting, lousy FX,... But the soundtrack was oddly intriguing, so I have to give the makers credit for that.

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING (1975). Very good John Huston film ( originally intended for Humphrey Bogart/Clark Gable, than Burt Lancaster/Kirk Douglas and even Robert Redford/Paul Newman) has Sean Connery and Michael Caine as less than Honorable Soldiers in Colonial India who realize after their service, it's back to England with Dead End Jobs and Second Class Citizenship. They decide to travel into Afghanistan and set themselves up as rulers. By pure chance, Connory survives a Spear and is hailed as a God by the Natives. Things seem to be going swimmingly until their cover is compromised and then it gets scary. ****

LAS VEGAS LADY (1975). Not so good Heist movie of three Women working at a Casino and deciding to put the Screws to an Asshole Supervisor by ripping him off. Plays like a late 70's Detective show and lots pf footage of Vegas to fill in the spots. Good cast, though, with Stuart Whitman (NIGHT OF THE LEPUS, CRAZY MAMA), George DiCenzo ( DARK SHADOWS producer, HELTER SKELTER, BACK TO THE FUTURE), Lynne Moody (WHITE DOG, SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM, NIGHTMARE IN BADHAM COUNTY) Jesse White (The MAYTAG commercials) and an early appearance by Andrew Stevens (THE FURY).
The star of LVL is Stella Stevens, which is obviously the reason I watched it. Like a lot of her work and once again, She is better than the film deserves and also a real looker::love::! **

I just recently caught a few more Italian giallo horror films on Tubi TV! Umberto Lenzi's "A Quiet Place To Kill," Mario Bava's "Baron Blood," and another one called "The Black Belly Of The Tarantula" may not be the best of the sub-genre, but they are all still overall good, unique, original, and interesting films with a lot of great action, suspense, and thrills, along with good twists and turns! There is even a good amount of humorous dialogue in each of those films as well! Those who like the Italian giallo horror films should enjoy those as well! ::cool::

TWINS OF EVIL (1971)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOLIERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Later period Hammer that has aged much better than many of them. After THE VAMPIRE LOVERS AND LUST FOR A VAMPIRE had come and gone, the writers looked through the October 1970 PLAYBOY and discovered the Playmate for that month was Identical twins Mary and Madeline Collinson , which got the idea going for the title.
Peter Cushing is so frightening in here as the Leader of Religious Fanatics who "cleanse: the area of "Witches" (normally those that live alone and are attractive) by burning them at the Stake; more scary than Vampires because that sort of thing really happened. Arrival of two Nieces just gets his paranoia going and even more so when the more rebellious of the two sneaks out to carouse with a Decadent nobleman who can't be touched because of Political connections.
Damian Thomas (the Nobleman and according to an IMDB poster looks a lot like Jimmy Fallon) has been Vampirized , passes on the curse to Madeline and the carnage begins. Pretty rousing climax here. Also nice seeing Isobel Black in here-remembered her from KISS OF THE VAMPIRE.
One funny scene involves our Hero who is about the only person who can tell the twins apart and is in love with Mary, the more virtuous girl. Oddly enough, when Madeline is kissing him and undoes her gown, He is clueless until there's no reflection and He's being attacked . ***

MANDINGO (1975). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Have seen many negative adjectives describing this such as "Trash", "Loathsome" and "Abomininble" and must say that is scratching the surface...totally offensive in so many ways and such a waste of a fine cast. It deals with a decaying Plantation that needs to revive its fortunes and mainly gets it by Slave trading. This Paramount film would surely never be made today, but to give credit where it is due, it is probably the most convincing in showing the awful aspects of slavery, such as auctions, forced separations and mistreatment.
Good cast as mentioned, although probably a low point for many of them...James Mason (whose "Treatment" for Rheumatism ::shocked::), Susan George, Brenda Sykes , Perry King (CLASS OF 84), Ken Norton playing a fighter who tangles with Earl Maynard (A Pro Wrestler mainly on the West Coast and one of Lou Gosset's cronies in THE DEEP) and Ji-Tu Cumbuka (BLACULA and DR BLACK AND MR HYDE) and a quick glance at Sylvester Stallone, a year or so before ROCKY.
Though Slavery is shown as the Big evil in here, it must be pointed out that Women of all types also were Second Class Citizens, with NO RIGHTS at all. Susan George does give probably the one Good performance here as "Blanche" who marries Perry to get away from Her Brother (it implies rape had occurred) and give Him an Heir. Perry is suspicious and upset that Blanche is not "Pure" which drives him back to His Love Slave, Ellen (Brenda) who gets pregnant by him. In retaliation, Blanche seduces Ken and Perry just cannot deal with the results of that, although He has done the exact same thing.
Approach with caution...*1/2

THE ENFORCER (1976). Third Dirty Harry film has some good moments, but a lot of stiff scenes maybe due to first time Director James Fargo inexperience. The main plot involves an SLA type group stealing weapons to extort money from the city. Lots of dialogue that was cliche even by the time of TE's release like "Pigs" and "Power to the People".
Some good photography of Alcatraz Island, a Weapons display at Fort Baker (where I lived July 1971- July 1972-recognized some parts of it) and Tyne Daly is quite good as Harry's newest partner, a neophyte who hustles and becomes proficient; more than likely helped Her get CAGNEY AND LACEY. **1/2

MY BEST FRIEN IS A VAMPIRE (1988). Had never heard of this until my Wife found a guy called Jack Finch on YOUTUBE with various "Top 5" for Horror movies and since He mentioned this, thought We would check it out...have liked most of his choices.
A Teen Delivery Boy trying to find Romance (despite a lovely Cheerleader who has her eye on him-LeeAnne Locken who was later on REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DALLAS) is seduced by a Hot client (Cecelia Peck, daughter of Gregory Peck), becomes a Vampire and tries to adjust to all the changes.
While it's kind of goofy, it actually wasn't all that bad with some decent laughs (and much better than I remember ONCE BITTEN being) and a pretty good cast. I just saw Mario Bava's "Hatchet For The Honeymoon" for the first time, and that one is an eye opening interesting and intense one. It is about an unhappy married man whose wife will not have a divorce because she wants to keep part of his business and profit. He goes on a spree of killing soon to be happy brides, due to that and a severe mental illness. This one takes us inside the mind of the sick and demented serial killer, which is unique and different from most serial killer films, and it is very artsy and gory with good smooth editing like most of Mario Bava's work. Those who like the psychological thrillers that are dark, artsy, and gory in the old school done right format, along with fans of Mario Bava should not be disappointed with this one. ::danger::

FBI agent (Kyle McLachlan) and local officer (Michael Nouri) try to stop a space alien on a crime and murder spree. Nicely shot and paced horror thriller with a sense of humor. Well shot car chase scenes and special effects. The story is simple and rather lighthearted for a horror/thriller. And while the characters are shallow, the main actors are engaging and film's successful as light entertainment.

THE DEVIL'S RAIN (1975). This Cult movie certainly has it's good points, but bounces all over the place and gooey ending goes on too long. But I like the cast (very Young John Travolta) and Ernest Borgnine is truly a very cheerful villain here. Inferno (1980)
Honestly... I was very disappointed. Watched it in conjunction with Suspiria (probably not a good idea). The opening scenes are very good; the scene where the witches “fly” is so amazing I could talk about it all day. If you’ve seen it I’ll expect you know what I mean, even if you don’t share my enthusiasm. The finale was also very lacklustre (and the riverside murder... *groan*)
Overall I completely understand why Dario Argento considers this his least favourite films, and I can see why. I know that Mario Bava films some large chunks of the film but even so I expected better from both of them.

I likely join you as being a fan of Suspiria, but not necessarily a lot of the other Giallo films.
Curious what you think of The Beyond (1981)?
I enjoyed Blood and Black Lace (1964), Black Sabbath (1963) and Zombi 2, and there's a lot I haven't seen yet. But wasn't thrilled with The Beyond and Opera.

I have a soft spot for the Italians. Over 20 years ago it took me the better part of a decade but I managed to track a copy of pretty much every single film Fulci directed with the exception of some early documentaries he did. Argento only took me a year by comparison, but I find Opera and The Beyond both to be highlights in the Italian catalogue so I'm always curious to hear what others liked or disliked in the Italian realm as it's kind of a special niche for me.

Carroll and Jones are great together (and believe they both got nominated for Oscars) and early performances by Roxie Roker (THE JEFFERSONS) and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (WELCOME BACK KOTTER). But I felt the film played a lot like an episode of GOOD TIMES; was almost expecting Lawrence to yell "Dy-No -Mite!" a couple of times and an ending that just doesn't ring true. **1/2

Just curious, what didn't you like about The Beyond or Opera?
I have a soft spot for the Italians. Over 20 years ago it took me the better part of a decade but I managed to track a copy of pretty much every single film Fulci directed with the exception of some early documentaries he did. Argento only took me a year by comparison, but I find Opera and The Beyond both to be highlights in the Italian catalogue so I'm always curious to hear what others liked or disliked in the Italian realm as it's kind of a special niche for me.
Hey RDB! Good to hear from ya!
Well, it's been a while since I've seen them, so allow me to be more general...
In regards to saying I wasn't a big fan of From Beyond, I know that's likely to get folks to say some nasty things to you ::big grin::. But it's pretty simple, it's a personal peeve I have with a high percent of Giallo films: I don't like illogical scenes. I can take a dream sequence in a film with the best of them, but a film that's full of illogical scenes irks me.
From Beyond, as far as remember, doesn't announce its dream sequence but it's full of illogical, unreal, and impossible scenes, including jump-cuts. You know, like the spiders killing the dude the way they did. If you know the film well, you already know what I mean. So it's just not something I enjoy. I still appreciated the film and enjoyed it in my own way, I'm just not a fan.
I was very looking forward to Opera. The trailers I saw had some great shots (thinking of movement shots through the crowded theatre). But the film as a whole had very few impressive shots (as I recall). It had some unrealistic scenes (thinking of killing scenes in the big room with props) where victims should have moved or escaped, stuff like that... which I was prepared for, but still rather something I endure. Overall, I just didn't find the story all that intriguing; and didn't really find it all that suspenseful or exciting either. I know Opera was very well received by critics, but I just have to be honest. Maybe I was in a horrible mood, and I should give it a second look.

I'M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA (1988). Early Wayans Brothers film that is a parody of the Blaxploitation films that started in the 70's and is in the same vein as their later SCARY MOVIE franchise. Quite a few misses, but an awful lot of hits that are truly funny. A great cast, many who were involved in blaxploitation...Jim Brown (SLAUGHTER, BLACK GUNN), Issac Hayes (SHAFT, SOUTH PARK), Bernie Casey (DR BLACK AND MR HYDE, REVENGE OF THE NERDS), Antonio Fargas (FOXY BROWN, TV's STARSKY AND HUTCH), Clarence Williams 3 (TALES FROM THE HOOD, TV's THE MOD SQUAD), John Vernon (ANIMAL HOUSE, CHAINED HEAT, KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE), Clu Gulagher (THE HIDDEN, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Ja'Net Dubois (TV's GOOD TIMES), Eve Plumb (TV's THE BRADY BUNCH) and a young Chris Rock. ***

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981). A long time favorite...it has Everything. Action, Suspense, Comedy, Great FX, a rousing score and awesome cast...thought then and now that Harrison Ford and adorable Karen Allen had wonderful chemistry together and would have loved to have seen more of them in the sequels (Lets forget the last Indy film, the one about the Skulls...had to give up after 20 minutes it was so bad). The opening segment is classic with more excitement in those ten minutes than many movies have in their entirety. Still and always *****

I got around to watching A Nightmare on Elm Street (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087800/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) again. The more the sequels get towards the back of your mind, the more you notice how genuinely scary it is. A true classic.
Also, knowing all the stuff that was to come afterwards... hearing a blue balls Johnny Depp say "morality sucks" is kind of funny.

AIRPORT '77 (1977). A Huge jet loaded with priceless art-and a great cast as well- is hijacked, flown off course and while flying low to avoid radar detection, clips an Oil rig and crashes into The Bermuda Triangle and sinking under the waves. Will the passengers/crew be rescued before water breaks through, crushes the machine or oxygen runs out?
The basic premise of this is silly, to be sure, but really like most of the cast, Special effects are better than You would expect and I found it enjoyable enough to watch to the end. >>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I finally got to see Lucio Fulci's "Aeginma,' which is a comedy horror anti-bullying film, and is very well done with so many awesome looking kill scenes with the spirit of a dying victim of a college prank gone terribly wrong getting back at all those involved with it. This is like taking "Carrie" to a whole new level. There is also a lot of great action, stunt work, props, gore, drama, dialogue, scenery, with great smooth editing and a killer lively soundtrack on the background to provide a great lively mood for each scene as it goes along. This are also plenty of artsy and gory scenes throughout the movie as well, which are overall well done. This is yet another example on why Fulci is considered one of the better of the lower budget horror film makers who can take a low budget horror film, and not only make it look good, but also make it look like it is on a much bigger budget than it actually is. This is also highly recommend for fans of the older school Italian giallo horror films. ::danger::

I also looked back at "The House That Dripped Blood," and it is even more amazing than I remember it. It also has a lot more great humor than I remembered. The ending I won't describe to avoid spoilers for the few who have not already seen it is too hilarious and timeless. This film is just another example of why Amicus is still holding up, still to this day, more than most horror anthology films, including ones from more recent years. ::cool::

Ok, I gotcha. That's kind of what I was wondering as far as The Beyond.
Fulci described The Beyond as "absolute cinema". It's "like" a nightmare. You have a setting in this case a house over a gateway to hell and then you have some zombies. The rest is just a series of events that happen. Much like in a dream you can be in one room with something happening and then walk into another and something else is going on. It's random to an extent, but shaped and/or tied together sometimes by the setting. That's kind of what is going on with The Beyond. It's not that it's a dream and it's not a film with a definite plot, it's here's a setting and here's some things that happened. Just a brief glimpse of time at a particular location. It's definitely an acquired taste but I guess because I can relate to the nightmare like aspect of it I find it one of his best works.
As far as Argento's Opera well, maybe because I actually listen to opera a good deal I enjoyed the story line a little more than some others, but I thought some of his ideas, like the needles beneath the eyes so you can't close your eyes to things were really inventive and statements often about life in general. I showed it to several friends over the years who were horror film enthusiasts and usually along with Tenebre and Suspiria it ranked among their favorites from Argento's catalogue.
But either way, thanks, it's been a while since I've been on and it's nice to talk about some stuff like this. I'm trying to find a little more time to pop in once in a while and see what's going on. I'm so out of the horror loop these days I've missed pretty much the last decade, although a lot of people say I haven't missed much ::big grin::

THE CONCORDE: AIRPORT '79 (1979). This was on the same disc as AIRPORT '77 and checked it out yesterday to see if it's as awful as it supposed to be. It's quite bad with such a flabby script that has more of a sleazy air to it (especially in scenes involving George Kennedy::shocked::) than previous installments. As per the rest, the cast is the reason to watch it, but too much "Comic" relief from Jimmie Walker, Martha Raye. John Davidson and Charo and endless repeats of the same scene wear thin quick. And, for the life of Me, can't picture Eddie Albert (GREEN ACRES) and Sybil Danning::love::::love::) as Husband and Wife::confused::!
After lousy opening, it was billed as a Comedy, because it's just too silly and can't be taken seriously. Almost a precursor of 1980's AIRPLANE! **

PRIVATE LESSONS (1981). Probably the GrandDaddy of Teen Sex comedies so prevalent in the 80's. Plot involving extortion etc is too complex for this sort of film and Eric Brown in his first film develops his normal style; Wide eyes and a goofy grin. Still, He's a Lucky SOB to be around a naked Sylvia Kristel and was even luckier a few years later to be in a similar situation with Sybil Danning in THEY'RE LAYING WITH FIRE. **

WITNESS (1985). While the premise has been done to Death; two people from different cultures fall in love- this is a pretty solid, well done film. A recently widowed Amish mother is between trains when her Son witnesses the homicide of an Undercover Policeman and Tough Cop Harrison Ford (Aces!) takes the case only to find out there's more to it and the lives of his charges are in serious danger.
Haven't watched this years and finds it still holds up very well. The chemistry between HF and lovely Kelly McGillis is a slow burn; The dance in the Barn definitely shows an attraction>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

THE LONG RIDERS (1980). This saga of the James-Younger gang is wonderful in the Production values, but it takes awhile for the story to pick up. Once it finds its footing, it's pretty good and quite violent as well-especially in the Northfield MN raid...Sam Peckinpah would have been proud. Main selling point for TLR was it featured Real Life Brothers playing Brothers in the story, such as The Keach's (James and Stacy), The Carradine's (David, Keith and Robert), The Quaid's (Randy and a very young Dennis) and The Guest's (Nichlas and Christopher). ***

DIARY OF A MAD HOUSEWIFE (1970). A long time favorite, this superb dark comedy has finally come out on DVD. Lovely Carrie Snodgress is wonderful as the phobic housewife with two bratty children and the most obnoxious, insufferable and infuriating husband You could imagine. Richard Benjamin as the demanding Social climbing wanna be is such a tool that He quickly becomes funny, although You'd be amazed He hasn't been dispatched. Carrie takes a lover (a young Frank Langella) who is just about as bad as the husband with a meaner streak. This synopsis doesn't make DOAMH sound like much, but very recommended with many memorable scenes. Also cameos by Peter Boyle and a Pre-Stardom Alice Cooper Group. ****1/2

LIFEGUARD (1976). The poster for this would make You think this was a T&A comedy (OK, a little of that from PLAYBOY's Sharon Clark and Anne Archer), but it's more of a character study . Sam Elliott is a Lifeguard at a beach and enjoys the job, but is feeling the pressure from within and others if He should do something more "Respectable" (or making more $$). I like Sam in just about anything and my wife enjoyed this a lot, especially due to Sam's snug bathing suits.

Not great, but worth a watch and good supporting cast includes Anne Archer and a pre HARDY BOYS Parker Stevenson. I feel a young Kathleen Quinlan steals the film as an infatuated teen who has a brief fling with the Lifeguard (oddly enough, shortly after Parker is warned not to mess with the younger girls), expects more and her crushed reaction when She is let down (albeit gently) is very convincing; despite the adult behavior, there's still a Young child underneath. ***

1941 (1979). There are many good things about this Steven Speiberg film, like Special effects, John Williams score and an amazing cast. What sinks it-and very early on- is the absolutely putrid script by normally reliable Robert Zemekis, Bob Gale and John Milius. It appears that it was decided to make the whole film be like a Three Stooges Pie fight and I really can't recall a more noisy film...endless shouting, explosions, screaming, yelling, destruction, crashing, still more yelling::mad::::sad::::confused::. A few funny moments and I noticed some sight gags that were later used in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, USED CARS, Indiana Jones AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM ,as well as the opening right out of JAWS. Body Snatchers (1993)

I remember hearing about something called "The Machete Order" wherein you watch IV, then V, then II, then III, then finish with VI. I guess now you could follow onto the sequels.
The idea is after you find out about Darth Vader's true identity, you flash back and watch that downfall before ending triumphantly (ah, those triumphant Ewoks.) It totally cuts out Phantom Menace with the valid point that it's totally self contained and besides introducing a few characters, plot-wise has pretty much nothing of consequence.

You know, I actually like that idea, the flashback of two films before seeing the feel-good ending Return of the Jedi is a pretty good idea.
But I'd say seeing IV and V, and then going to Ep 1 would still be good, as it does give the origin of Anakin as a slave and the prophecy, etc; plus it gives an interesting look at (Emporer) Palpatine's manipulations. I agree, Ep 1 certainly is a stand-alone film (like New Hope is) and lighter on the main story arc, but if you're going to watch 5 films, might as well watch the 6th. It's not like anyone is going to watch 5 films in one sitting anyway.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree about Phantom personally. I think more than anything, it's good to get familiar with Palpatine, and to understand why Obi-Wan continues to stick with Anakin despite his...you know...awfulness

CRITTERS (1986). Small furry fanged aliens terrorize a small town with two shape shifting bounty hunters after them. Good premise, although it reminds me a lot of GREMLINS (and it seems 1987's THE HIDDEN took a page from it). Despite the premise and the always welcome Dee Wallace, there is too much movie for the slim plot. While I enjoyed it in parts, once was enough. I recently saw a few more classic Italian giallo films on Tubi TV from Lucio Fulci that I had not seen before, and it was about time I finally got to see these. One is "Aeigma," about a college prank gone wrong with the victim's ghost back to haunt all of those involved. Another is "Manhattan Baby," about a cursed antique found in an ancient Egyptian tomb, brought back to Manhattan to bring the ghosts of ancient Egyptian pasts into the city of Manhattan. The third one is "Demonia," about an archeology team accidentally digging up the ghosts of another evil past with the demons coming back to haunt everybody. These are all very intense and well done, which is to be expected when from Fulci, who has not disappointed me. "CROCODILE" DUNDEE-1986. The luster of this has faded for Me; still some fun parts, but the "Fish out of water" subtext (done twice here) seems to be scenes thrown together for the sake of it. Nice to see Caitlin Clarke (DRAGONSLAYER) and Reginald VelJohnson (DIE HARD). **1/2

I saw Croco Dudee many years after it came out. It had enough unique Australian culture and values and enough righteous indignation of poor behavior to be a fun one-time watch. I think most films have little rewatch value, and this one probably fits that mold.

MARTIN (1977). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I truly like this George Romero film of a Young man who may be or not a Vampire; it's really left open to interpretation if He is the real thing or an extremely disturbed person. You can see that He is dangerous when stalking his prey -pre-dates DEXTER where a syringe and sharp implement, plus extensive clean up is involved. Many Romero regulars are here and also George's first film with Tom Savini and his impressive effects. Both have roles (GR is funny as a Priest who dislikes the Church wine and enjoyed THE EXORCIST) and how different they look without the facial hair We're accustomed to::shocked::! ****

ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES (1971). Second sequel to PLANET OF THE APES has a dubious method in setting things up, but it's probably the best they could do at the time. Starts as almost a comedy (and not a funny one either), but a couple of reveals by Zira change the whole thing around and EFTPOTA becomes pretty good and involving. Noticed Jason Evers from THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN"T DIE is here. ***

Two more classics I finally got to see are "The Slayer" from 1982 and Joe D'Amato's "Grim Reaper," also known as "Savage Island," from 1979. "The Slayer" is about a lady who keeps having bad dreams and blames bad things that happen in real life on them, then takes a vacation with her husband, brother, and sister-in-law to a secluded island, hoping that would help with her situation, only to have more bad dreams and more bad things happening on that island. That one actually has an interesting plot and story that really keeps interest with some well developed interesting characters in it. It also has plenty of twists and turns as well. "Grim Reaper" is another classic Italian giallo horror film taking place on a secluded island that not too many people live on, believed to be cursed with a lot of unexplained murders with missing dead bodies. That one starts off intense right from the start, and really has some great twists and turns in it. Those into the Italian giallo style should definitely like that one as well. ::devil::

MORTUARY ACADEMY (1988). Two Brothers (one Christopher Atkins, looking iike a young Mark Hammill) inherit a Funeral Parlor/Teaching Institute, but the current owners aren't going to give it up without a fight. Very obviously inspired by POLICE ACADEMY and like PA, a few good laughs with lots of tedium.
Mary Woronov (who I like in just about anything-she's very sexy, as well) leads the cast, but most of laughs for Me came from her normal partner, Paul Bartel,, playing his usual stuffed shirt. But this Stuffed Shirt has a hidden side that gets very close to bad taste and although the final line was used before to great effect in another film (Not telling You which one), it's works here pretty well. **

THE BEAST IN THE CELLAR (1970). Some gruesome murders of young Soldiers near the home of two elderly sisters leads to the usual slapdash investigation. The two sisters (Flora Robson and Beryl Reid) remind Me very much of the two Aunts in ARSENIC AND OLD LACE and some moments here, especially at flashback time that will grab You. Sadly, not enough of them. **

HE KNOWS YOU'RE ALONE (1980). Brides-To-Be are being targeted by a Killer. Will Caitlin O 'Heaney (reminding Me of old time Movie actresses-lovely with a sense of mystery) make it to the end of the film and decide who She wants to marry?
This seems to be lumped with the Slasher movies of the early 80's, but more a Detective thriller than anything else. A pretty cool opening (used almost the same in SCREAM 2 in 1997), but if You're looking for Red stuff, You'll not get it. Of more interest are early performances by Tom Hanks -how Young He looks!- and James Rebhorn (who usually played smarmy types in later roles like INDEPENDANCE DAY, SCENT OF A WOMAN and CARLITO'S WAY to name of a few) as a Horn Dog teacher, Paul Gleason (THE BREAKFAST CLUB, DIE HARD) and Steve James (I'M GONNA GET YOU, SUCKA and THE EXTERMINATOR). Also neat was seeing Taso Stavrakis (Tom Savini asst and actor, notably from FRIDAY, THE 13th and DAWN OF THE DEAD) handling the Special effects. **1/2

Quite cheesy and sleazy Drive-In Faire, which of course makes it worth seeing. Have heard that Tarantino is a big fan of this (these kinds of films, generally) and was reading reviews on IMDB and after watching a second time how Bonnie, in this film, is similar to Bonnie in PULP FICTION-You hear a lot about her, but never see her (at least not a face in PF) and like PF, this has two traveling Hit Men traveling around, talking banalities and eating. ***

Aliens (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_5)
Just came across a nice Alien-box. Turns out this has both the theatrical release and the special edition of Aliens.
If you look at Alien, it had more in common with the slasher films and the cabin in the woods films than with action. Compared to the first one, this is more of a straight up action film, with all the banter between the soldiers and the shooting. And it's an eighties action flick, so the bad guy is a real slimeball, we have a to have a cute kid in there (thank you, mister Spielberg) and the main characters get a oneliner.
That said, it does its job and delivers on all the things you would expect from a similar flick.
The knife scene with Lance Henriksen is adrenaline.
Burke gets his comeuppance in a very satisfying manner.
The fight between the soldiers and the aliens is exciting, albeit onesided and the scene near the end with the Queen and Ripley saving Newt had me on the edge of my seat.
To make a comparison between Alien and Aliens in terms of better or improvement is understandable, but misses the point. If anything, both are not so much competitive (even though this one does perfect the "go big or go home" logic) as they are complementary. They complement each other, while both telling their own story and having their own merits. And both are still worth seeing.

Try to give it a look...watched again this weekend and still effective.
THE HITCHER (1986). Wasn't really impressed with this back in the theaters back in the day and time hasn't been kind to it. Rutgar Hauer is still way creepy, but plot is too thin for almost two hours and might have been more effective in an anthology film. Also, C Thomas Howell is SUCH a goof that You wish Rutgar would stop playing games and get it done. After awhile, it seemed the main point of the film is showing numerous ways of destroying means of transport. **

BEYOND ATLANTIS (1973). Possibly the most wholesome (meaning no excessive violence or Female nudity) Filipino 70's film. Regular Vic Diaz gets pearls for services and a group of somewhat shady characters want to get in on the spoils and try to avoid the angering the natives too much-check out the eyes!
Stunning underwater photography helps the plot-almost like TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE with how the characters change. Decent cast with Patrick Wayne, John Ashley and Sid Haig, who steals the film with a great line about what is "Sacred" to him. Could have been better, but not too bad. **1/2

An American Werewolf in London (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082010/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_2)
Holy crap, this just seems to get better with every rewatch.
The film in itself stands rock solid. The storytelling, the performances, the build up,... all top notch. A few things deserve a separate mention, though.
First of all, the special effects. There is of course the infamous transformation scene that has aged well. Not to mention the portrayal of the wolf, making it as scary as possible. Or the progressively worse state that Jack is in.
Then, there is the humor.
The scene with David waking up in the zoo is hilarious. Jack keeps wisecracking, even in the state he is in near the end. Then again, what else is there to do, cry?
Or the scene in the porn theatre. Jack confronts David with his victims from the night before. And even after he horribly killed them, they still have that typical British "Hello". I thought that was hilarious.
And there's a few more funny moments, like David on the phone with his sister. Or the scene where David tries to get himself arrested (Queen Elizabeth is a man!). Or the details you notice on a second viewing. I already saw the cameo by Rik Mayall, but Bottom-fans should keep their eyes peeled in the pub. The guy who plays Rotweiler in the gasman episode has a part here as well.

DEATHDREAM (1974). Decent Bob Clark film that clearly got some inspiration from "The Monkey's Paw". C.H.U.D. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087015/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt_i_1): In my memory, this one went in the same bin as other silly 80s flicks like The Ghoulies. So based on some of John Heard's scenes, I was kind of suprised. This flick does take itself kind of seriously. Maybe not 100 percent, but still.
That said, it cannot help but look goofy. From the silly special effects on the monsters to the overacting on the characters or some of the scenes with The Wet Bandit (Daniel Stern will forever be a wet bandit). And now even in a funny way.
So, in short: a silly story with no good kills and very little to keep you invested. Two stars, but he second one is mostly for nostalgia's sake.

Yep! Well said.
I loved the concept and the trailer. I actually saw this in the theatre with a buddy of mine. The film does take itself seriously. I thought the one scene where the CHUD breaks through a wall was kinda scary and well done. It has some moments.
It probably should have been rewritten and expanded, adding more action and suspense scenes. I didn't mind the effects, there just wasnt enough horror and suspense going on. Same old story of missed writing opportunities.

LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE (1973). While I still like this, found it has not aged so well- found Clive Revell to be such a pompous buffoon and Pamela Franklin quickly becomes shrill although the scene where She tries to "comfort" Daniel Belasco is still pretty hard hitting. And even if He really becomes hammy (especially towards the end), still love Roddy McDowell is just about anything. And as for Gayle Hunnicutt::love::::love::::love:: Worth seeing to be sure, but still in THE HAUNTING's shadow. ***

Love Legend of Hell House, especially the writing and subject matter. The experiment scene is great, excellent sound and effects. I wish there was more of the experiments and effects, but still a fine film.
It's been awhile since I've seen it, but i seem to recall the ending a bit abrupt. speaking of abrupt endings, and The Haunting... yep, abrupt ending. ::big grin::

GOD TOLD ME TO (1976). This starts out well with ordinary citizens committing heinous crimes and when asked, the film title is uttered. A Policeman investigating the case finds there may be UFO"s involved or actually Divine intervention...at least that's how I saw it. Interesting premise, but goes on so many tangents, it's almost as though We're in different films, including Black Gangsters, search for identity and claiming faith while doing otherwise. Biggest surprise in here is an early role for Andy Kauffman, who according to IMDB managed to infuriate some people while filming. Worth a look, but could have been so much more. **

The Stepfather (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094035/)
This film has one and only one star: Terry O'Quinn. Throughout the film, he delivers a haunting performance as the titular stepfather.
His shining moment is when he makes the opening sequence into the memorable scary scene that it still is with his calm demeanor after a horrible deed. Whenever I see this film, I can't help but wonder: Was the idea of Jerry Blake whistling Camptown Races already in the script or did O'Quinn improvise that?

STEEL MAGNOLIAS (1988)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Has been derided as a "Chick Flick", but think for the most part, it's a good involving film about a group of longtime friends that deal with a tragedy later in the story. Great cast with Oscar Winners like Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis, who is hilarious here. Darryl Hannah seems to be have thrown into the story to fill space -find her character mealy-, but Dolly Parton is wonderful as the Hairdresser who eventually becomes a "Chain"
I'm sure Her family and friends love her, but like Tom Cruise, I JUST DO NOT see Julia Roberts's appeal. Her character is spoiled and snippy and her obstinate, foolish decision is responsible for the tragedy occurring and was appalled that she received an Oscar nomination for SM-would have given it to Dolly instead.
Still, the vets provide many involving moments, especially Sally whose raw wail composed of grief and rage gave Me chills. ***1/2

I cry hard at that scene every single time. I think my favorite characters were Olympia Dukakis's and Shirley MacLaine's. So many great lines!! Some that I still use!

Two Evil Eyes (1990)
8/10
Enjoyed almost every scene and was a triffle scared too. There is no particular genious in it [as far as I can see in one view], but no flaws, either. What I would call a genuine horror film. ::cool::
Based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe, and directed by Romero and Argento. So the aesthetics kind of mixed.

WANTED:BABYSITTER (1975). Convoluted overlong drama involving a Kidnapping and Mistaken identity. Mainly watched it for the cast : Robert Vaughan (THE MAN FROM UNCLE), Vic Morrow (THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, 1982's THE TWILIGHT ZONE) Sydnie Rome (Lots of Euro Trash) and Maria Schneider (LAST TANGO IN PARIS, THE PASSENGER). **

DEADLY GAMES (1982). Was looking on 1000 MISSPENT HOURS to read "El Santo's" reviews when came across this, which I had never heard of. Also even with all my reference books, only found a couple of brief reviews. Decided to check it out on YOUTUBE...
Afterwards, figured it was so unknown is because it deserves to be. Follows the basic rules of 80's Slasher films (Unseen Killer, Red Herrings, Promiscuity), so there is nothing You really haven't seen before and done better as well. Not much in the way of blood and the Women in here are pretty obnoxious with infernal voices, especially the first victim , whose suggestion to the killer is extremely offensive.
Cast includes Steve Railsback (HELTER SKELTER, LIFE FORCE, THE STUNT MAN), JoAnn Harris (THE BEGUILED) and a young Colleen Camp (WAYNE"S WORLD, THE VAGRANT) joined by June Lockheart (TV'S LOST IN SPACE, LASSIE and 1938's A CHRISTMAS CAROL) and former Football player Dick Butkis (who spends most of the film playing football). *1/2

Labyrinth (1986)
5/10
Had to see it eventually. It's cultural landmark, required viewing for me.
Girl decides to save her little brother from a mystical being in a maze.
Loved the opening... seemed like it was going to be morality tale or allegory about a women embracing or rejecting responsibility, adulthood, feminine nurturing -- as represented by caring for her little toddler brother -- or choosing to live a carefree childlike life free from that responsibility. But instead, once she decides to go get her brother, which she decides to do immediately because, as she says, "I have to", she learns absolutely nothing from her experiences. She doesn't change at all. The scenarios teach nothing. The only thing the scenarios might teach are friends are useful; and be kind to people and they might be useful; and forgive people and they might be useful. Nothing else.
The sets were great. The music sucked. It wasn't humorous. Not a feel good film. I guess it was a happy ending, but more like, 'I just need to get some rest now'. Much of the film was quite boring, especially the short, but not short enough, "fight" scenes. I know why nobody ever quotes anything from this film. There's nothing to quote.

LINDA (1973). Enjoyably bad TV movie of a woman who in the best tradition of DOUBLE INDEMNITY manipulates the men in her life to pull off the seemingly perfect crime. As usual, Stella Stevens ::love::::love::::love:: shines and carries the story on those lovely shoulders-along with a great penultimate line- with some decent support by John Saxon. Ed Nelson (NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST), alas, gets some bad lines and uninspired direction...his character is truly annoying and the majority of his scenes will have You rolling your eyes. ***

It's the shortest of the three versions. There is less gruesome stuff (but still plenty of it), some different dialogue, scenes added (The talk which reveals the "Delicate condition" of Fran), scenes deleted (such as 95% of the Police Dock portion) and some different musical cues; I believe all are from Goblin.
Hope this helps. Still worth checking out, but I'll always reach for the other versions; The theatrical version that I saw so many times at Midnight Movies/VHS ( I believe George preferred this cut of the film) and usually the extended version , which has more grue.

Got ya.
Yeah, I prefer the extended version, mostly because I want more of everything before they get to the mall.
The mall stuff is ok, I just don't think there's quite enough there for the runtime of the 'only at the mall' section.
In the 2h19m version they hit the mall at 32mins in, and it ends at the mall. Sure, it's a mall film. I accept that. I just wish it was only about half. ::big grin::

LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK-1972. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
LOBG scared Me the first time seeing it (a week away from turning 12) and seeing it over two years later, was laughing more Han anything. Had a Friend with a very infectious laugh and his outburst when the arm goes through the bathroom window (when the poor guy is on the crapper::EEK!::) really had Me going, but not as much as when said poor guy busts through the door. My Buddy fell out of his seat with hilarity::cool::!
Watching it recently, it really hasn't aged well at all. Lots of filler and those cornball songs::embarrassment::. But on a personal note, it reminded Me very much of younger days. Fouke Arkansas (SW portion of the state near Texas and Louisiana) where the story takes place reminded Me VERY MUCH of the area in NE Arkansas where many of my relatives lived (Close to Missouri and Tennessee). Much of the same type of scenery and hearing the locals talk in the film certainly brought back many memories of many relatives , mostly all of them passed on by now::sad::.
So for nostalgia sake, worth checking out. But on its own terms, once will more than enough for a first time viewer. **
