Yea I enjoyed it. I'm not an anime fanatic, I mostly go for the trendy stuff and this was a good flick. Short, but good. The art in it was really cool too. It's no GITS:Innocence, but it's visually pleasing.

Really?

But Combat Shock is quite unlike any other Troma release - it was snapped up by Kaufman after a mid-80's run in grindhouse theatres in a cut version under the title American Nightmare.

It has since been reissued fully uncut by Troma, and is a million miles away from their usual brand of Z-grade acting and cornball special effects.

Grim in the extreme, and highly recommended.

C'mon... I dug the movie but the effects and acting were as bad as (almost) any other Troma movie I've ever seen. "Life's hard Frankie, and because it's hard I feel compelled to take off my jacket." Wow, and then he takes off his jacket... hahaha. I don't know, like I said I liked the movie but this was as bad as a lot of other Troma stuff. (Although the Troma special features were HORRIBLE... holy hell... Cooking With Combat Jacques? Wow...)

Leprechaun 6: Back 2 the Hood

I was shocked and surprised that this movie was actually one of the best in the series. The acting is alright, the character development is miles ahead of any of the other films and they stopped having Lep speak in those annoying rhymes. And the humor is actually funny (Which is a far cry from Leprechaun 4 or Lep in the Hood. The part where Leprechaun smokes weed is great.) The biggest downfall was that the gore was primarily off-screen, but other than that this was one of my favorites in the series. Anyways, I was expecting this to be the worst of the 6 Leprechaun films and it ended up being one of the best (Right there with Leprechaun & Leprechaun 3. C

I was just looking back a few pages to see what people had been watching lately and I saw 2 films getting bashed that I have to disagree on...

Following - This is the first film from Christopher Nolan (Memento)and it's certainly a strange one, but I don't think it was bad at all. Slow paced? Yeah. Lacking of any physical action? Yeah. But the story and main character are so fucked up it makes this movie really cool to me, despite the low budget and amateur feel of it.

And the other one was...

The Salton Sea - Aside from Tombstone, this is the best acting performance I'e seen out of Val Kilmer. I would have to think he's done some speed in his day to be able to portray a speedfreak so accurately. And the scenes with the drug dealers (2 different scenes with 2 different dealers) are fuckin' crazy! I really, really liked this movie a lot.

Anyways, there's my rebuttals on those two movies...

Either you misread or I wasn't clear. I wasn't even really talking about Memento but a different film by that same director (Chris Nolan). I just mentioned Memento so people would know who I was talking about.

Anyways, I agree 100%. Memento is brilliant & original. A+ all the way.

Just finished watching Danny the Dog/Unleashed.
Was better that I'd anticipated, some crazy-ass action there, excellent coreography and the score was used to pretty good effect. The storyline was a little far fetched, but a tale told well all the way.

Brazil. I've been hearing a lot of praise for this film over the years, so I decided to see it for myself. Not too bad, but very long, and some parts are a little dull. It's quite humorous at certain points, but the humor is very, very dry. Overall: 6/10.

Yes, I know. Romantic comedy with Robert Redford. Normally, I wouldnt have gone near this with a 10 foot pole, but I felt kinda obligated to see it....cause my mother was an extra!! Honestly, it wasnt a bad movie overall, somewhat amusing in parts, but it was really cool to see my mother point herself out in the crowd! Anyone who's seen it, she's part of the crowd infront of the Taft Gallery near the end:D

Holy crap. Well, I expected this to be a crappy, teen-slasher flick. I mistread the reviews, I thought by "Death" killing them, it meant some retard in a Grim Reaper costume. Well, AWESOME surprise.

The acting flat out sucked, but that was to be expected. Original plot with some really cool twists, crazy [if not a bit chessy] deaths, and some pretty cool stuff to notice [John Denver....cool.]

The only things I didnt like were the ending, and how they figured out the order. That was an awful, awful ending, and the order part was just way beyond any acceptable level of cheese.

Overall- Fun movie, cool plot, full of cheese and cool deaths. If you're like me and were putting off waching this, I definatly recomend checking it out.

I don't understand why it's surprising that Devil's Rejects sucked. House of 1000 Corpses was the most unoriginal horror film I've seen in years, so I can't imagine the sequel being any better. Rob Zombie needs to seriously consider thinking of some of his own ideas instead of just throwing together a hodge-podge of scenes from other (better) movies.

And Angra, I was noticing that same thing with Amalthea's ratings almost never dipping below an 8. Hahaha. Either Amalthea's the nicest critic out there, they haven't seen many movies, or they are just very easily entertained.

Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy Fulfilled

Meh... It was okay. Average acting, decent plot, average gore... *Shrug* Nothing special, but there's worse films out there...

C-

Killjoy 2

Oh man... This sucker was low budget! The acting was horrible, the gore was off-screen for the most part and the story was garbage. The only redeeming quality in this film was that Killjoy the Clown was somewhat entertaining in the most cheesy of ways. Other than that, this one scuked!

There has been a movie sitting on my DVD rack for months, mocking me everytime I glaced at it. "You're to wimpy to finish watching me!" it said. And today, I got fed up.

I put the absolute, bar none worst movie ever made, Jigsaw, back into my DVD player. No, I wasnt to wimpy cause I was scared....just scared that it might get worse. I finally finished watching it, and I cant even begin to tell you how awful it is. Even if you're in the situation I was and you see it at a yard sale, in good condition, for $2 DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE IF YOU DONT WANT TO WASTE 75 MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE. At least it was pretty short...

Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun. Laughably bad attempt at Last House on the Left/TCM style horror. For the first hour or so, it's just a bunch of annoying hippies prancing around and playing grabass in the desert. I almost thought I was watching one of those Sixties-era "freakout" movies. Final score: 2/10. Not recommended at all.

It took you long enough to see it. You should see part 2 then as well... I liked the first one and the second one.... I can't wait until part 3 comes out soon. Even if one doesnt like the whole story, you gotta be impressed with some of the cool deaths.

Primer. Chilling and thought-provoking SF about time travel. Specifically, what would happen if you went into the future and screwed things up somehow? And what if, when you came back, you couldn't remember what you did wrong? Primer is the sort of SF that Hollywood is incapable of making. That is to say, the filmmakers actually remembered what makes good SF. It's ideas, not action, and certainly not special effects. Highly recommended. 9/10

Well, I was expecting more of a biography on Vlad the IMpaler and that's not exactly what this is so I was a little disappointed. The acting was average, there really wasnt much gore at all, and the script moved kinda slowly. For the size budget that I would guess they were on, I'd say they did a great job making an average movie. Nothing special. I'd only recommend it if you a re a vampire fanatic otherwise you probably wont like it.

Wow! Definately not what I was expecting. The first half of this movie was a grade 'A' zombie film with all the gory blood and guts that you could hope for. Unfortunately, the second half turned into a mediocre sci-fi film...

Anyways, the acting was good, the gore was great, the plot was decent. All in all, it was a lot better than I was expecting it to be, but still not as great as it should have been considering the first half of it's potential. Still, a very pleasent surprise...

Constantine

It was OK. Not as good as Id hoped, I was expecting a good ol', action packed comic book flick, which this wasnt. Some of the CGI actually looked damn good, and once I figured out what was going on, it was actually a not bad show.

Nosferatu

Well, I knew right off the bat this would be a tough one to grade because it's so damn old (and silent) so I don't have much to compare it with. I'm sure in it's day, it was the most gruesome thing to come along ever (Hell, it spawned it's own sub-genre) but it didn't really do much for me. I can respect the film they made and what they had to work within those times, but for me, having seen soooo many horror films over the years, it just didn't do it. I may take some heat for this, but honestly, I found it rather boring...

That being said, I still have mad respect for the vampire genre and it wouldn't be what it is if this film never came out so my grade is a bit more generous than it should be based on cultural impact and not neccesarily overall entertainment value...

The thing is that I think what you have is just an impatience with older movies, especially those that are silent, 'cause that's just how they were. I wouldn't try to watch any more silents if I were you, 'cause Nosferatu is as good as they get, and if you didn't like Nozzy, you won't like any of 'em.

Son of Dracula

I officially LOVE Universal's Legacy collections. This here is a damn good movie, not as good as the first Dracula [of course] but still damn good. Cheney was NOT a good choice for the Count, but it certainly was better than the total lack of a Count in Dracula's Daughter. Louise Allbritton's character was amazing, very far from the typical horror movie lady of the time. The effects were surprisingly good, the mist transformations were amazing. It did drag in some parts, but overall....Great movie!!

Well, it was visually spectacular. It would have been really cool to see in 3D at the IMAX theatres but I didn't get around to that so I suppose renting it and watching it in 2D is the next best thing.

I know it's a kids film, but I wasn't crazy about all the singing and dancing across colorful backgrounds that's only there to make the little ones go 'Ahhhh!'

After seeing Kung Fu Hustle, I had to check this one out. I wasn't disappointed either. Like KFH, it was fresh, stylish and funny. I think the best way to sum it up might be to call it a kung fu movie meets the Bad News Bears. All in all, I enjoyed it, but be warned... It's subtitled so if that's not for you, this probably isn't either. Very entertaining.

B

Kicking and Screaming

It's hard for me to figure out why some of Will Ferrell's movies are great and others just aren't. (Bewitched comes to mind) Like everything I've ever seen him in, Ferrell is way funny in this, but the problem was that he was the only bright spot. RObert Duvall is pitifully miscast and the script sucked. Will's funny, but apparently he can't carry a movie with no supporting help for an hour and a half. I was a bit disappointed in this one... Mike Ditka would have made a better father character than Duvall did, but that's just my opinion...

Let me first say that I love gore and plot while a good plus isn't always a required piece of the puzzle for me to enjoy a movie. Also, I love zombies, I love copycats and homages and anything walking dead pretty much. That being said, I just saw Undead with high hopes and holy crap. 3.5/10 because there were a few decent spots but DAMN did that movie suck hard. Thank God for netflix or it'd be on my shelf right now.

Last House on the Left: first time I had ever seen it. It's brutal but not as exploitative as I thought it would be. Disturbing film.

Land of the Dead: you know what? I didn't hate it. I thought it was fun, though not nearly as good as the previous films obviously.

Hellraiser4-my husband swears up and down we saw this. After every gory scene he asked 'you don't remember THIS'??....uhhh-no..I don't..I vaguely remember parts...maybe we were making out or something, cause I know half the movies I've seen,I don't remember for that very reason.
Now that I offically have...it's ok -5 out of 10.

Hellraiser5-okaaay, so we're going all psychological thriller now-eh?
whatever.

Hellraiser 7-netflix sent this one out of order....but still my reaction to this movie is: HUH?

A History of Violence. Yeah, I broke down and drove to the nearest city to watch it. Good film. Cronenberg seems to be moving far from his typical subject matter in his newest films, but I suppose there's only so much you can do with body horror. I think I should have watched the movie before reading the comic, as I was a little disappointed at what was left out. Although if they had filmed a lot of scenes from the comic, the movie would have certainly got an NC-17 rating. Overall: 7/10

Land of the Dead (again)

I really didn't notice any differences between the unrated directors cut and the theatrical version and since I was a bit diappointed in it the first time I saw it, nothing has changed. The gore is cool, but it fails to live up to the standards Romero set for himself with Night, Dawn and Day.

B+

On deck: House of Wax (remake), Mystery Science Theatre: Manos The Hands of Fate, and Haute Tension

Yeah, I'm really dissappointed that "unrated" might mean 2 extra minutes of a lame scene, not like 5 extra minutes where maybe 20 seconds for each nasty scene is headpounding gore. Now it seems to be nothing more than a lousy marketing ploy. :(

I missed that "Zombie Flesh Eaters" one. Fulchi's "Zombie". lol@that. That movie must have like 5 or 6 different names. The only thing I don't understand, why would someone call it "Zombie 2? Always makes me think "well, than what was 'Zombie 1' then?" ;)

"Zombie 1" = Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead'

Fulci had so much respect for this movie that he wanted to make his a kind of "second" film. Not really a sequel, but more like he couldn't compare his movie to Romero's.

House of Wax (remake)

There was some alright gore and Paris Hilton's poor acting ability didn't even really stand out because 1. she wasn't in it that much and 2. the rest of the cast wasn't that great either. The plot was similar to the original but it has definately been modeernized and given a Hollywood touch. It was right on par with what I expected which was some cheesy entertainment, but nothing spectacular.

lol Okay, makes sense. Yeah, Fulci wasn't much for tension and great dialog, but he sure more than made up for that with cool, nasty gore scenes. :)

I dunno.... seems to me that "Hollywood touch" has ruined some otherwise promising movies that could've been good but ended up being complete garbage.

Zombi 2 - As stated above Fulci's homage of sorts to Romero's Dawn of the Dead (Zombi for the Euros). Anyway, not as good of a movie but hey you've got a zombie fighting a shark and a cool eye gouge scene.

Land of the Dead unrated - Liked the movie in the theatre and enjoyed it at home.

Amazon Women From the Moon - Weird comedy sketch/50s sci-fi fake... interesting and funny I think I'll pick it up.

Forgot to add From Dusk Till' Dawn, that's getting toward the end now. Always a great watch, I need the set...

They Live fight scene is definitely up there!
It's utterly raw and the entire time that it's
happening, you can't help but root for
both of them...if you haven't listened to
the commentary of this movie with Roddy
Piper and John Carpenter, do so!

Funnily on the same note, it's begun to
dawn on me why John Carpenter stressed
so many times, "it's not my movie...the
director has his own ideas". I refer, of
course, to the remake of The Fog.

After sitting through the film last night, I
understand why.

"Unrated".... :( I wish that actually meant something today other than a cheesy marketing ploy. And the levels of gore of new films today aren't even as heavy as "The Thing" with an "R" rating in 1981.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000: Manos, The Hands of Fate

Oh boy, where do I start.... I guess I'll start off by reviewing the film itself. Manos, Hands of fate is THE LOWEST RATED MOVIE EVER on imdb.com and justifyably so. It sucked!!! Terrible acting, terrible plot, terrible everything. On it's own merit, I'd give Manos an F. (Which is the lowest grade I've ever given anything I reviewed on here. Even House of the Dead got a D- I think. (I could be wrong. That one may have gotten an F too.)

Okay, now to the upside... I didn't have to watch Manos on it's own merit. I had Joel, Crow and the other robot (forgot his name) throwing in their witty comments to amuse me. If anyone's ever seen MST3K, they watch really bad, really low budget sci-fi films and rip on them the whole time. It's pretty funny in general but being that the movie was SO bad this time, this has to be one of their best epsiodes. With the MST3K crew's commentary, I'd give it a B-.

Next up: Haute Tension, The Changeling, and Ichi the Killer

gorefreak
10-27-2005, 05:16 AM
"The Changling" wasn't bad. It was kinda slow at times, but it did have an overall creepy atmosphere. "Psycho" did have good acting, and the plotline was okay, but it had almost a scene-for-scene remake. Okay for a film in general, but as for a scary movie, it fell flat. The kill scenes looked as if it could be for a modern made-for-TV film. Not too bad, but I wasn't very impressed with it.

Meet the fockers: Funny, decent follow-up, but IMO, not near as funny as Meet the Parents was.

The Terminal: Very good...interesting to think that things like this (albeit not to the extent) happen all the time...good story, good performances all around. Quite funny, yet also pretty sad in parts...very watchable, good film.
