Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
This was better than I expected from a Robert Downey Jr. flick. It was actually a pretty nice blend of dark comedy and action. The narration was a bit annoying but a great supporting cast & script overshadow it. All in all, I was pleasently surprised...
B-
H.P. Lovecraft's Necronmicon: Book of the Dead
This movie was essentially 3 short stories rolled into one film. It was decent, but not great. 2 of the stories were pretty cool, 1 was less cool. The budget and average acting left something to be desired but all in all, not terrible...

"Irreversible" 5/10
Maybe the most cruel and unpleasant movie iīve ever watched. Canīt say that i enjoyed it.
The danish tagline, "No one stays the same" couldnīt be more true. Iīm still in some kind of shock...
Though, i must admit that the fire extinguisher scene was amazingly well done.
"Collateral" 8/10
Now THIS is much more pleasant viewing.
I love it when famous actors plays unlikable characters.
Tom Cruise own this movie from beginning to end.
"Marathon Man" 8/10
Iīve only got 1 beef with this one.
Dustin loses his brother and girlfriend and in the end just leaves the briefcase full of diamonds to continue his poor life persuing his life long goal of becomming a marathon runner. WHAT THE FUCK KINDA ENDING IS THAT??!!!!:mad:

high tension - the first part of this movie was excellent, but the later part dragged a little, i figured out the twist b/f it happened and what a twist! 7/10
the hills have eyes (the remake) - i guess i shouldn't have read the reviews and descriptions b/f watching the movie b/c i was a little let down. i was expecting much more "shock cinema." still it was enjoyable from start to finish, w/ a great series towards the end (when the asshole stepson comes for his baby). 7.5/10

Great little overlooked film noir. I'd only seen Peter Sellers in comedic roles until now, but this proves that he's just as incredible in a serious role. Very highly recomended.

Creep
I'm beggining to appreciate UK horror above all else, for an obvious trend that is appearing. It seems every single one I've watched - I ended up liking. For one reason, or another. The Toybox, The Descent, Dog Soldiers, House of 9, and now this. All little gems (mostly little) that I didn't expect as much of as I ended up getting.
In the case of Creep, it suceeds in the visual and audio departments. Excellent background pieces, and I expecially loved the train audio montage that was set to a beat. Came off as being very original. The setting, characters, scenes and effects for this film were all spectacularly designed, and pleasing to the eyes. Mainly the train station (which was refreshing since I have never seen one before, as they aren't in our area), the killing scenes, and most importantly - the "monster".
CGI has failed with monsters, and latex suits reign supreme. Glad to see them used in this film as well. There was some very "fat roll"-like issues with it, when he moved a certain way... but it could be argued tat it was just loose skin. He was fucking creepy either way. And the "Jimmy" scene? Gaaah... I got a slight chill.
The gore effects are equally well done and designed. They look pleasing, and brutal. The throat-slightings, while you can tell how they were done, look real. Usually the head comes off as very fake, or the skin near the neck looks like foam... but not here. Perhaps it's faults were covered by the nicely-hued blood. Not fingerpaint red, not black, just right. Not realistic, but it looks right. If that makes sense.
Now my favourite part, was the ending. I won't ruin it, but you can't help but chuckle a little, as the main character does as well before breaking into tears. Shows something about humanity, eh?
Reccomended for a horror fan.

Easy Rider
Okay, I've seen bits & pieces of this film before and none of it really caught my interest so it's taken me this many years to watch it from start to finish. I was disappointed. This movie is really overhyped and unless you are really into motorcycles, hippy music or looking at scenery, you'll probably be as bored as I was. The acting is superb, but the the whole story just sorta sucked and whoever had the idea of injecting a 5 minute motorcycle riding cross country montage in, set to 70s music, for every 20 minutes of film ought to be fired. All in all, I was bored and disappointed, but the acting was good.

If you're hoping to see any of Chappel's hilarious stand-up you'll be disappointed, but if you love live music this is it. Backwoods
All I can say about this one is wow.... It's almost unbelievable to me that a movie with literally zero dollars spent on anything can get any sort of mass production. This film is in one of the Horror Movie 4 packs you can get at Best Buy, sam Goody & other places like that, but it looks like it was literally made with no budget! None! It's like they got a group of friends together, someone had a camcorder, they grabbed anything around the house that could be used as a prop and they were ready to go.
Bad doesn't even begin to describe the quality of this film, but at the same time... Being that I've acted in no budget horror before, I found myself somewhat entertained. They tried for a lot of jokes, some worked, some didn't. They didn't have the budget for any good onscreen gore, but they tried anyways. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this to anybody unless you, like me, are one of those people that love a horror movie that is so utterly terrible that it makes you laugh the whole time.
Because I sympathize with their budget, I am being lenient with their grade...

Jeff Bridges should have won best actor. Goodman, Buscemi & Turturro should have all been awarded best supporting actors. The Coen's should have won best director. Lebowski should have won best film & best scerenplay. The list goes on....
I did notice it has moved into #195 alltime on imdb.com's top 250 list though so it's starting to get the recognition it deserves.
Man there are some great lines in that film...
"Don't fuck with the Jesus."

I liked everything about this movie (with the exception of a few gore scenes that looked a little too fake)...but the ending. The second disc of Gantz.... now I have to wait till next week for the other parts to arrive. I probably should've waited till I had them all cause now I'm in mid story limbo :)
American Beauty: I hate this movie. I used to be really into stuff like this a couple of years back, now it just annoys me. I dunno this movie sucks after you've watched Happiness. I really hate the plastic bag bit :rolleyes: ......still this does have a few cool moments and Kevin Spacey is always good value. Worse shit could've been on TV last night :) not something I'd own.
Dead Leaves: Pretty strange whacked out anime. Weird. Dumb. Cool. If you get what I mean? :confused: I enjoyed it tho.

Dave Chappelle's Block Party
This was alright, but nothing earth shattering. Basically, it was like a couple back to back episodes of his show, minus the sketches. So what we're left with is a lot of Dave just kicking it and several hip hop acts. It was entertaining and if you're a Chappelle fan, it's worth checking out, but like I said, nothing earth shattering.

Vampires: The Turning
Mediocre acting, preatty lame script, minimal gore and little too much karate action for a vampire flick make this one to put on the 'Dont bother' list. I wasn't really impressed with any aspect of this film, but it wasn't the worst vampire film I've ever seen either. It just didn't float my boat. The vampire subculture of Thailand has potential as a cool plot, but this wasn't executed properly.

SPOILERS EXIST WITHIN THE PotC2 BLURB.
Inside Man;
I don't know if I can rate/review this film fairly, since before watching it my Grandmother had spoiled the entire thing for me. That means, the twists at the end and whatnot weren't a suprise, and I didn't get the whole "first time viewing" experience at all. It also kind of made it boring because I kept thinking "So that connects here... and yeah, makes sense." like something you would do while watching a twisty-mystery for the second time to make sure thibngs actually made sense or the director just bullshitted you. I also kept wondering when the final scenes that my Grandmother explained to me would happen - making the whole build-up seem tedious. I can say this, the robber's plans were pretty ingenious, but not at all as amazing as he made them seem - and I really liked Jodie Foster's character. I want a spin-off. Hehe. The concept wasn't that original either, it's a bank robbery after all... and now that I think of it, the title's kind of a spoiler.
Sleepaway Camp 2;
A much different tone then the original. This is more hokey-pokey fun. Camp-like fun. It doesn't have as much impact as the first, and it knows it. It kind of makes fun of itself, and there are one-liners galore. Mainly from Angela's character who I really like. When comparing this Angela to the prior Peter, it doesn't make sense how one could change so drastically. But it's a slasher to be enjoyed, you can't expect things to be perfect. The death scenes are a notch up from the first film, but the effects are a step down. Very bad effects, hehe, but hey... adds to the humour. Overall this is yet another slasher I enjoyed (of the few) which prooves thst Sleepaway Camp might be (or is) my favourite slasher franchise. Due to the fact I can enjoy it, even if formulaic, simply based on the character of Angela and how upbeat she really is. Other slashers fail because they have braindead non-speaking killers, and the same sex-charged teens being killed. Nothing added, nothing fun, just constructed deaths on film which aren't that exciting.
Sleepaway Camp 3;
Oooh, this one sticks to the same path as the second. And is just as fun! Angela's back, baby... just like her cityscape graffitti claims. The oepening scne is a real hoot, and just a teaer of what is to come. Angela sticks to her past humour and personality, which once again makes this enjoyable although predictable and formulaic still. The one liners have increased, and the effects have (somehow...) gotten much, much worse! And I loved it. The rubber heads, the corn syrup blood, and Angela crushing dummy bodies in a garbage truck, and hacking away at latex organs. Classy! I guess this pretty much seals it that SAC (haw, haw...) is definately my favourite slasher franchise. It's just too enjoyable. And it has the rewatchability and movie-night-with-friends factor. How can you pass that up?
Nightmares & Dreamscapes 2: Croutch End;
I wasn't fond of the first episode at all, and got quite dissapointed in the series after it... but, this one changed my mind. I don't know why, since the whole thing on second viewing comes off as very, very lame, cheesy and poorly acted - but when I first watched it, in the middle of the night, half-asleep (may be why...) I was genuinely interested. It's such a bizzare tale, and is definately trippy. A very different step from the first episode, completely different. There are a lot of wierd camera angles, washed-out scenes, and bizzare sound effects, music, and color changes. It gives it a dream-like feel, which I assume is what they were going for. I had a gripe with the female's acting, mainy her delayed-shocked close-ups after she looked around to see a werewolf gang, the two kids, and acat with a deformed eye. The twist at the end was kind of... odd, and I didn't get why a gang of were-people were kept being shown. They didn't have anything to do with it. Or wait, maybe cat people? And they symbolized the change? Oh, who knows. I enjoyed it. I'd watch it again. I'd like it again. You... may not.
Pirates of the Carribean 2;
This is what a summer film should be, and usually is. Only this tended to be a lot more fun. It has a whole lot more humour then the first, and the whole audience was basically pissing themselves through the entire thing. Also, the budget has been stepped up quite a bit and the effects were amazing. So were the sets. Nice, colorful beach scenery, expecially in the tribal scenes, and dark, grim imagery later on when at sea vs Davey Jones. Speaking of Davey, his crew and himself were pretty much some of the best character designs ever. Part fish, part human. Very cool characteristics and looks. I had fun trying to identify what each one was. Starfish, clam, crab, lobster, squid, etc. The Kraken was also cool, but I expected it to play a larger part and have more of a character. It was kind of... just there. Though it did play part in a twist I was rather dissapointed with. Won't spoil it, but let me just say the "death" scene was not as climactic as I wished it to be. It was... forgettable. Then they just moved on and brought back a character from the first. The ending definately took a dive in the excitement factor, but I still await the third part which is probably finish NOW even though it only comes out in May, 2007 due to them filming the second and third part at the same time. Oh, and Orlando Bloom took off his shirt. Actually, it was ripped off. Mmm, he has a sexy back. (AAAHH!!! JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES EWWW)

Thankfully Ive already seen it, but Id slap a spoiler warning on that for those who havent got to yet. Even though you dont flat out say what happens, you do hint at a few things that probably are best not hinted at...if you get my point.
By the way...(*Spoilers*)
How much more climactic did you want the "death" (Hah, like that's gonna last) to be? I hated the reasoning behind it, but thought it was a very cool looking scene.

I agree it is sort of a spoiler, I guess I should go back and mark this. And for the sake of things...
*** SPOOOILERS ***
I agree the scene looked very cool, and I loved the shot and slow-motion effect. But it seemed a little not-built-up. I don't exactly know how to explain what I feel - but I didn't feel it was impactful. Like, in other movies... deaths bring something. Characters mourn, you feel saddened, or something. Here it was just... "Oh, he's dead. LETS RESSURECT HIM!!". None of the characters were all that effected, and if you could count the final scene that only lasted, what, 2 minutes? Then they were back smiling. I would say if the film ENDED with that scene, and you didn't know if he DID die or not, and you had a flash of all the characters shocked reactions then cut to credits now THAT would be a good cliffhanger. Angering, yeah, but I would have preferred it. Even if it was hinted he might survive. But no, he died. Just like that. And now their back to bring him back to life.
PS - I also knew the ending beforehand which might have effected it for me. I read your thread, heh.

______________
I saw this a second time today and I really don't think the characters were back smiling so much as excited about the prospect of raising their "captain" from his grave. The whole thing has to do with curses, magic, ressurection... I think it was a good ending. I did notice (only the second time through) when Tia gets the monkey and they show him a second time he's actually sitting on somebody's big black boot. At least that's how it looked to me and if I'm right that means Barbosa was at Tia's when Jack visited. You knew Sparrow wouldn't die though, he talked about filming the third movie... I give the third movie 20 - 30 Jack free minutes.

Anyway, I just watched Dawn of the Dead '78 for only the second time. I really glad that I gave it another chance...the first time I saw it, I didnt really like it much. Now, looking back, I think it was a mix of overly high expectations plus the comany I was with. I saw it for the first time with a bunch of friends, at 1 in the morning, on a total sugar rush. This time I was calm, and alone, and I enjoyed it alot more.
I still dont think it can top Night or Day IMO, but it really is a fantastic, classic film, and I cant imagine how I didnt like it before.:confused:

The state you are in really does effect how you view a film. At least I find this true about myself, in a lot of cases.
Fragile;
I heard mixed-things about this. It was so-so, not as good as the director's past films, and even some heavy complaints. I am glad I finally got around to watching this, ignoring those remarks and hoping for the best, because the best is what I got. I don't know whether I just have awakward tastes, or like movies for the wrong reasons, but Fragile really struck a chord. I can say now that above all else, B-horror is where my fandom lies. A lot of classics, and hollywood pictures dissapoint from their hype - but B movies, and Independant flicks such as Ginger Snaps (even with it's hype) always seem to bring something to the table I can sink my teeth in to.
For this film, I had not a single gripe about it. I thought Callista did a great job on her character, and the saddened rage scenes were very well portrayed. The directing was excellent, the shots were beautiful, as were the set pieces. The effects were also rather good save some green-screening when the building begins to crumble near the ending.
Fragile is probably my favourite ghost-themed movie now. I can't recall much, and if someone reminds me, this might change - but in recent memory, this takes the cake. The ghost was very eerie, and designed well. The twist that went along with the "mechanical girl" was also very suprising, and unexpected on my part - but smart, and exhilerating.
I was thinking of saying something to this effect, before I completely finised the film; "Being the fan of cliffhangers I am, I would have preferred it if the movie had ended with the kiss, and a fade to black with her heart beat starting up, then roll credits."
But I took that all back when I saw the real ending, it was a real heartwarmer and it made me smile.
"Do you enjoy films?"
" Yes, if it's a good one."
This was one of those. Reccomended.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
A modern day western that strongly reminded me of Clint Eastwood's directorial work, as it has the same sort of dark, fatalistic tone that Eastwood's works do. The film features excellent performances all around, but particularly from Tommy Lee Jones (who also did a fantastic job in the director's seat) and Barry Pepper. The ambiguity of the ending may turn some people off, but I think that it was essential to the film's central theme of redemption. Great film. I recommend it highly. Overall: 8.5/10

I LOOOOOOOVE Dirty Harry, the movie and the character. For me, this movie is Clint Eastwood. A lot of people talk about his westerns, but his cop movies are the ones I really like.
Some people probably like the movie for its quotable lines, but the storyline is what strikes me most. I'm pretty sure most people have seen this classic, but just in case...SPOILERS!!!!!
I wanted to smack Scorpio when he's laying on the football field wailing about his rights and needing a doctor, and I wanted to wallop that DA and judge when they were saying they wouldn't/couldn't charge Scorpio because Harry didn't have a search warrant and tortured the poor guy. I think in a lot of ways (without getting overly philosophical) that the storyline of the movie reflects what we see in society today. (I guess I'm thinking about the Jessica Lunsford case in Florida and that piece of scum who killed her.)
When it comes to tough guys, very few have anything on good ol' Clint. When he pulls out that Magnum, I go weak in the knees. (And I'm the kind of gal who gets tearyeyed at a papercut.:p ) And there aren't many guys who can make standing on an overpass waiting for a school bus to come by look cool, but Clint makes it happen.
I guess to answer your question, Austin, I really liked it. I just don't know how to give short answers.:D

Deepwater;
DVD came early (does this happen often?), so I gave it a view. It was labelled as a film noire which is what intrigued me - and that it starred Lucas Black who I quite like. The film itself wasn't that spectacular, to me anyways. I can see it being a hit or miss, with certain audiences. Things I noticed were the look of the film. It looks late eighties-to-ninties -ish. There was also some heavy aliasing and colorization problems with the video, and it's the first film I've watched in fullscreen in a LONG time that hasn't been on a TV station. That, along with Lucas' characters accent, gave this film a certain feel. Reminded me a little of Sling Blade - which Lucas also appears in, coincidentally.
The characters in the film certainly are pretty cool. Some gave me the chills simply because we are so in mystery through the entire film.
If you like mafia-ish, mysterious, older-feeling feelings - check it out. A nice b-movie that, despite it's budget, looks quite good.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2. I liked it, but it wasn't as good as the first one IMO. There were a few scenes that went on too long; they could have cut them in half and made the movie flow better. I also thought that Johnny Depp's character was a little "overdone" (if there is such a term) this time; somebody needed to tone him down a little.
I was really impressed with the special effects. They were pitch perfect for the movie...not too much, just enough. I really liked the scenes with Davy Jones/his crew and the Kraken. All in all, it wasn't a bad way to spend an afternoon.

C.H.U.D. 2: Bud the CHUD
Silly monster comedy from the dreaded 80's...strangely hypnotic. It can't be called a "bad movie" because no one involved was taking it seriously. There is a certain pervasive dullness to it, but a lively synth musical score keeps it moving. Most everyone (including Gerrit Graham as the title character) is hamming it up pretty good!

Haha, Ultraviolet... "Are you mental?" is the one line that I can quote that sums up all the dailogue. I seriously laughed out loud when that line was spoke. Ugh is right.
But underneath this all, I did find something REMOTELY enjoyable. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, but at the same time it's not too far off.

Silence of the Lambs;
You're kidding me, right? This is a classic? A top 250 of all-time? BULLSHIT. This was probably the most horrid piece of shit I've ever seen. Anthony Hopkins' acting was SO bloody terrible I could barely stomach the film!! Glad Jodie Foster gave up on the sequel as well because JESUS! She can't deliver a line to save her sorry face from being devoured. The storyline was ridiculous, the "thrill / mystery" parts and any twists in the movie were just plain TERRIBLE and the whole thing was just BORING.
I'm joking.
I was really, really pleased with this film. I must say Anthony delivers one of the most UNNERVING performances I have seen. His cell conversations with Clarice sent shivers down my spine. Only one gripse with this movie. When
SPOOOILER
Hannibal attacks the two police men and eats them. I felt like laughing, it was just very cheesy-ish. The scene directly after with the music and a blood smeared face was quite cool, though
END SPOOOILER
I've seen the sequel, not this before, and I'm eager to rewatch it. Heard it's not as good as this though. Can't remember from what I saw way back when it was released.

Whoo, you scared me there for a second.
The sequel is pretty good...Id agree that it's not nearly as good as Silence, but I still enjoyed it.
Oh and if you havent seen it, Id like to be the first of a long line of members here that would like to point you toward Manhunter. Though I personally didnt like it as much as Silence, it's much better than Hannibal, and it puts Red Dragfon (which is a remake of Manhunter) absolutly to shame. See it.

I actually caught part of Manhunter on Scream, with good ol' Grisham. Got a laugh out of that. I didn't see all of it, but from what I saw, it look pretty good. Might have to hunt it down if they don't re-air it again (but still, those commercials every five minutes may make me track it down on video either way).

Night Thirst
It is amazing to me that movies this bad can get mass production deals. I am in the middle of watching one of those horror movie 4 packs (This one is called "Bad Taste Cinema Presents... SLEAZY SLASHERS") and so far, neither of the first two films on it had any sort of budget at all!!! These are seriously like movies that got made with a few friends, a camcorder, and whatever they could find around the house to use as props.
In any event, being that I like to make no budget films myself, I can appreciate them on a certain level. Night Thirst was less entertaining than the first one I watched and the story seemed really, really stupid and nonsensical. Bad script, bad acting, terrible story. There were a few nice boobies in it though...

A description I wrote for an Ebay ad:
"NIGHTMARE IN BLOOD" (1978)
A real product of the 1970's. This is the unbelievably weird obscure horror "drama" about a San Francisco horror convention in the mid-70's whose special guest, Malakai (basically a Christopher Lee-type horror star) is actually a real vampire. Malakai has more on his mind than simply drinking blood...he's using his career as a horror star to shape the public's opinion of vampires! It seems that Malakai wants respect, and he will ruthlessly destroy anyone who undermines his rather ill-defined plans. Can the directors of the Horror Convention stop Malakai and his cackling, murderous assistants, the original Burke and Hare? Directed by infamous horror host John Stanley, this film is an interesting fantasy about the entertainment world and the frightful realities that may lurk within the mythologies. Perhaps could be considered the predecessor of films like "Wes Craven's New Nightmare," "Shadow of the Vampire" and similar satires. This film is often awkward in its approach, and yet there is a certain intelligence that drives it and keeps it going.
Well, if the above description hasn't clued you in yet, this is NOT a horror film for the mainstream horror consumer's shelf. In many ways it is not scary at all--it is weirdly fascinating instead, with a gaggle of odd characters constantly spouting philosophical observations. Considering its small budget, it is very nicely photographed in widescreen (2.35:1). Director Stanley and co-writer/co-producer Kenn Davis appear on a commentary track during which they amusingly recount the whole sad, expensive tale of making and selling this wonderful oddball masterpiece. Unique and engrossing--a must for any film buff who loves the strange atmosphere of 70's movies.

I think I let the hype over this title get to me, because I was expecting something great, rather than the muddled, incoherent mess I saw. I didn't think that it was a bad film, it just made very little sense to me. Maybe that was the point, I'm not sure. Not very impressive overall, and I don't think I'd be recommending this one.
