Just done with RZ's Halloween.
While I didn't find it "all that bad", and actually liked the idea of some kind of opening sequence set prior to the rest of the film (although felt it to be a little dragged out)...just didn't find the film all that great overall - the rest of it was just typical crap teen slasher, lacking any real suspense.

Duck You Sucker aka A Fistful of Dynamite

Rod Steiger and James Coburn are both great in this classic from spaghetti western master Sergio Leone. The town of "Mesa Verde" couldn't look less Mexican, but the acting and directing are great and the story (complete with a quote from Chairman Mao at the top of the film) is subversive, leftist and really fun, if maybe a bit too long. Not on the same level as Once Upon a Time in the West and the Man With no Name trilogy, but still better than most westerns.

The talk around here is absolutely right... This movie is very good. Excellent acting, story, gore, thrills... This one's got the whole package. I do, however, feel like this was more a crime/thriller than horror... It's kind of in that genre in between... Either way it's excellent, and definitely worth a rent.

The Bank Job

This was a fun bank heist flick. British humor always makes me chuckle and others I know look at me like I am crazy but I guess because I actually get it and they don't. The flick was very well acted and it was pretty suspenseful even though you wouldn't really think so. Just needed a bit more action in it because the action didn't really pick up until the final 15-20 minutes of the film. I guess that has to do with it being based on a true story/events.

8/10

Clerks II

I have seen this movie time and time again. I saw it in the theatres when it was first released about three to four times and then a handful of times on DVD since then and it still makes me laugh extremely hard. I think it was very well done by Kevin Smith and the way he wrote it made it come back full circle nicely.

A touching and impressive directorial debut from Sarah Polley. Probably not for most people here as it is an adult drama/romance dealing with Alzheimer's and dementia, but the story, acting and directing are top-notch. i dunno about that.. I dont like a lot of what he does - the long dirty stringy hair look is practically a theme in his films .. but i do find him a compatent - even excellent director when it comes to recreating the feel of past genre films.

nothing else has ever captured the feel of hoopers mayhem in Texas Chainsaw Massacre as zombies house of 1000 corpses. that film impressed the hell out of me.

i think he's going to do good work once he finds his groove and branches out into more origional territory.

he had a lot of balls remaking halloween.. i didnt care for it much - but technically it wasnt badly made.

i'm very interested to see what he does next.

I thought Rob took the sensibilities from the first Halloween and kind of combined it all with his white trash character cache while changing it just enough to piss off purists. It wasn't the best horror remake I've seen but at least he made it his own and didn't worry about holding back which could have led to a shot by shot remake with no personality.

Never Back Down

I have never seen so many damn cliches rolled up into one movie. This was basically a movie made from parts of like eight other films and TV shows. If you were to mix: Fight Club, 2 Fast 2 Furious, UFC (Ultimate Championship Fighting), The OC, Varsity Blues, American Pie, Back to the Future, Rocky, and Troque into a blender you would get this cliche filled horrid of a movie. I wasn't bored or anything and it didn't seem to drag on but it was so cheesily over the top and predictible that I had to laugh hysterically.

watched that one not long ago.

the only problem with a Larry Clark film is that you feel like a pedo-voyeur at times - the way he runs the camera on the bodies.
i never get the vibe that it's artistic - or done to purposefully make you feel uncomfortable - i get the feeling that he's just indulging himself.

otherwise - i did enjoy woods in this one as well.

30D.O.N stuck pretty closely to the original storyline, with a few differences cast within the vampire community/structure.
The ending was much the same, one of the definitive scenes in the original comic.

There's also a "prequel" movie available on dvd called "30d.o.n: blood trails" if anyone's interested, doesn't look half bad.

I'd like to see them make a movie based off of the 30 Days of Night: Rumors of the Undead novel. Still haven't seen the 30 DoN movie but I'll be adding that and the prequel to my Netflix queue. High up on the list, not down there in the 300s. :)

I feel like a bad fan for not catching this one in the theater, but I just bought it (autographed by Thomas Jane) and wathced it in b/w before seeing the original theatrical version. I loved it. The b/w presentation was stunning. The story is great and the ending was wonderful. A real horror flick that horrifies. The kids loved it, the wife loved it. A great old-tyme creature-feature! Good job, Darabont!

Considering how young the cast is, I was REALLY impressed with this one. Really good script and some great performances. The story doesn't really have any surprises, but it's well told nonetheless. Recommended...but it's definately not for everyone.

i think the problem was the cast.

the story and effects were ok ... i wasnt expecting much in the first place ... but i found the cast - every on of them - to be impossibly unengaging - i couldnt care less if any of them lived or died.

i did like the approach the film took this time where no one was buddies with anyone else this time. a far more brutal film than the 1st.

My feelings exactly.

The characterisation in the scripts was the biggest drawback of the movie...otherwise it was really engaging from after the first 25-30 mins till the end.

It was a notch above AvP thats for sure. They need a good script writer for the third one, if they ever make it.

I was too tired to drop this review in last night. I thought it was going to be another lame "kids get in over thier head in a foreign country" movie. It certainly fits that description, but little about this film is lame or even typical.

There is a raw, unflinching air about it that is really effective and creepy. Best theatrical horror so far this year (not much of a compliment, I know) and absolutely worth seeing in the theaters because...

- it's not a remake!
- it's from a scary book and is pretty damned faithful
- self-surgery
- a fresh environment... Mayan ruins are awesome and it's about time they figure in a horror flick
- Jenna Malone, she's always great!

not brilliant, but fun and creepy and dark.

If you've ever seen a Nathan Schiff film you can catch plenty of stuff like that. there is a scene in one of his movies where a tube is clearly, clearly visible. i mean out in the open, and squiting fake blood from some dude.
but hey, they are just backyard films, so it only adds to the fun of it.

Sometimes I agree, it does make it fun, but with the direction of the movie and the potential it had I think it was simply lazy editing/special effects. I still liked the movie, TONS of gore and some nice music too, but it could have been better I think.

It's a family-viewing PG type of film (from Disney - ! - 1980), but this film really creeped me out when I first saw it when I was a little kid, and from searching the Internet it seems that other people had a similar experience!

It was fun to see it again after all this time - of course, it's not scary anymore, the effects are dated, but some of the imagery has stuck in my mind and still comes across a little creepy. If any of you have seen it, you will probably remember the blindfolded girl in the mirror...

The Mist.

It is even more beautiful on DVD...and the b/w version kicks some major ass!

This was my second viewing after the theater, and umm...I am kinda on Urge's lines regarding the ending. It was...a killer, to say the least. I kinda felt more impact now, then from watching it at the theater. The emotions it leaves you with at the end...oh jesus...

Quite possibly, one of THE most HARD HITTING endings I have EVER seen in any movie. Period.

I might never be able to see this one again either. Even if I do, I might stop playing it after ***SPOILER ALERT*** they hit the road from Thomas Jane's home.

Truly unbelievable movie, awesome characters, dynamite script and neat direction with mind-boggling effects. If the acting wasn't a little over-the-top and bland at times throughout, this is one movie which DEMANDS a perfect 10 rating.

Doh, you bought the 2 disc SE right?

The b/w version gives the whole experience a feel of a very realistic 50s-60s monster movie. You ll love it!

I was told this was the way Darabont wanted the movie to be made...and I dare say, if this would ve been the final theatrical version, it would have blown the box office!

I'm watching it now.... I'm not sure which version I like better though. The color definitely gives that awesome mysterious feeling when people disappear into the mist and stuff... but the b&w version has such an amazing look to it, the way the mist LITERALLY just TAKES over everything it touches.... perfection.

The Ruins - enjoyed this one. I pretty much agree with what Rod said earlier. I haven't read the book, but the wife has and said it was a faithful adaptation. Nice amount of blood and a few damn creepy moments. And yeah, Jenna Malone is a plus...

The Ruins – Good, scary, intense. But, something that nagged at me during the movie: why do we sympathize with the main characters? Their attempts to escape are clearly wrong and dangerous.

Love this larry cohen film.

Michael Moriarity give a performance that transcends the genre - in any other movie he'd have won (or at least deserved) an oscar.

The Ruins.

Yet another great addition to the genre. It has totally believable and sympathetic characters, an excellent script complimented by some kickass direction...perfectly casted actors who give it their best, and the main highlight - great CGI effects. It is claustrophobic...it is intense...it is deeply atmospheric...and it has shocking twists loaded in the last 30-mins or so.

Comes with a very high recommendation from me to Alky, Rod, Doc, Fortunato, Urge, Return, Jenna and any other fan of good, creepy old-fashioned atmospheric horror to the full.

A chupacabra movie...It was pretty goofy...You could very much tell that the 'chupacabra' was a guy in a suit running on his hands and feet, back legs WAY longer than front 'legs', with stationary rubber head (no, that's not a spoiler, it's about 'make up and special effects', this was supposed to be a 'real' chupacabra)...I wouldn't recommend it to most people...But, I don't regret watching it...I've seen much worse :)

Monster Man

WAY better than I expected...Many of you probably won't like it (cuz there are so many picky people here :p), but it was different, funny, and had plenty of really good gore...It was a little slow at first, not too bad though, moved really well for about the entire last half hour...Honestly, I just really liked this movie and Dustin did, too.

^ I really liked Monster Man. Still haven't seen part 2, though, and I believe there's even a part 3 no?

The Woods - Not a terrible plot but very poorly executed. Could be decent in the hands of the right person.

The Mist - Haven't read the book but I loved this. Far better than I expected. Now I need to hit up Barnes And Noble.

I honestly didn't know there was more than one, so I looked it up on IMDB.

The one we just watched is the 2003 Monster Man...IMDB lists a Monster Man that was made in 2001, but it's completely different (the 2001 has aliens). After reading about the 2001, I think I'll check that one out, too...Tom Savini had a hand in it, so I figure it's worth giving a chance. Thanks for the heads up.

The description of the one we watched made it look like it would be kinda corny, with monster trucks and rednecks...But, it really wasn't like that...Well, not the way I pictured it...I think anyone who likes gore and 'creepiness' should check it out.

IMDB doesn't list a part two for it, but I'll be checking other sources...I mean it's 2003, so I suppose it's possible :)

And yes, you HAVE to read The Mist...I read it a long time ago, and the movie is an excellent adaptation...Well...Until the very end, anyway. Excellent story.
