I just got done the best Canadian Film class ever. Teacher decided "screw work, you guys have enough going on with exams." and let us pick between watching movies or leaving. All the stuck up kids from the Dental Hygiene course left, and the rest of us watched and discussed Pontypool.
Very cool movie. Interesting concept for the spread of the virus. The lead actor had an amazing voice, and the little b-movie bit after the credits was priceless. Lots of Canadian themes too but I won't bore you. :P

Zigeunerweisen (1980)
Seijun Suzuki's unusual film is a mysterious, ethereal drama concerning the relationships between and forces within four people. The action is intermittently distorted, like watching someone walk behind a pane of imperfect glass, the form itself intact and then suddenly twisted and obscured, then back again. We're not sure what actually happened, what is dreamed, and what is misremembered. Freed from studio constraints, Suzuki is able to take his time with the story, and although it slightly drags in spots, feels sometimes dreamlike, sometimes eerie, and sometimes both, ending in a superb, haunting finale that I'm sure will be stuck in my mind for some time.
Highly recommended- V, Alky, Doc, NE, roshiq, and whoever else is interested.

Trouble Every Day (2001). French art-house horror at its brutal best. This story starts out menacingly slow and brilliantly unrevealing. Things just do not seem to connect, with the one exception that the viewer somehow knows that horrible things are going to come about. The story never really gets fully developed, but that does not detract from its horrify central element and allows for the imagination to fill in the blanks. There are two scenes that are worthy of special mention for a "most brutal and squeamish scene ever" nomination. The camera work is playful and original, lingering at times in a most threatening manner. The acting was wonderful, with Vincent Gallo owning the central element of this film's importance. The direction-sublime! Overall, this was simply an artful display of intimately terrorizing horror. Merci beaucoup.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1997) I actually liked this movie, kinda. Pretty under-rated and such, I find. :P I'm actually watching it right now. The protagonist just told Leatherface (Who's dressed up as a woman right now) to sit the **** down. and he sat the **** down. Haha! Good one.

Cool. Loved that flick. Enlighten me on the Canadian themes!
First thing I picked up on was the weather in central Ontario, and mention of Seasonal Affective Disorder. I think that was a nice way to set up the depression, paranoia and being stuck inside. Even without "conversationalists" running around, the movie could have played out similarly.
Sense of place, and small town boredom is huge. Maybe I found that more effective because I can relate, but it was pretty apparent. Mazzy was a Toronto talk radio artist before getting fired and started working in a town as small as Pontypool. He's clearly bored, and trying to stir shit up, make the small minded small-towners think about something, anything. He was so excited when shit started happening that he didn't really think about the hysteria he was causing. I just liked that because I know first hand that people in a small town will do anything for fun/attention. (Some kids in my town beat a carny to death with a baseball bat. We're desperate for excitement and it's sad.)
French/English relations. Firstly the BBC asking if the attacks were related to separatist terrorist attacks (In the 60s a group called the FLQ would set up mailbox bombs to try to kill English speaking Canadians in Quebec). Then Mazzy's distaste for speaking french near the end of the film. Look on his face was priceless.

Visuals: Absolutely stunning. Jaw dropping. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Plotline: Tired, cliched, and overdone. I've seen it used at least 197 times before. Quite disappointing actually given the total timeframe that this movie has been in the works by Cameron.
3D: Some scenes were amazing. Others were just plain annoying. The tech has a ways to go yet. I'm looking forward to the Blu-Ray so I can watch it without the distractions of blurry, doubled images in the periphery.

Yeah, it's a Kino release. The picture's not bad; the colors are kind of off, I think the contrast is way too low and they've messed with the levels a bit. But the aspect ratio's right and everything, and the film itself seems in pretty good shape.

Homicide (1991) This movie is about a man's denial of ancestry and how this denial has ironically actually worked for him as a person. Of course, once he begins to engender his Jewish roots things start to go downhill. Difficult material to be explored, but this film does it with aplomb. This is a difficult and depressing movie about a guy we all really want to cheer for. And he let us down for what seem like the right reasons. The acting was more than solid, with Joe Mantegna playing a very compelling part as a front-line detective. It is always nice to see William H. Macy in any role, and his role here could only have been bettered by more screen time. Direction was wonderful, and allowed for the subtleties that film was trying to express find repose in the more than casual viewer. Great film! Merci beaucoup.

Grindhouse presents: Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" (2007): A movie about a psychopathic Stuntman known as "Stuntman Mike" played by the marvelous Kurt Russell. Amazing movie, fantastic catch phrases, and camera work. I love the character Stuntman Mike and the whole 1970s southern western feel to everything. Quentin Tarantino's bar keeper character, "Warren" was also great. I give this movie a 7.5/10 The ending was kinda weird.

Dead Air
This was a bit heavy handed with its anti-war/weapons message (but hey so were all the Romero flicks) and I thought Pontypool had a creepier atomosphere. However Bill Mosely was excellent and the film flowed really well and I enjoyed it a lot. It'll definitely suit the people who were bummed Pontypool didn't show what was happening outside. Nice to see indie flicks like this that totally kill what the bigger studios are doing.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters back in '76 and thinking it was pretty decent, I mean it was made by Dan Curtis who created "Dark Shadows" one of my favorite TV shows and it had some good actors starring in it. I saw it the one time and never saw it again , that is until last night and WOW....what a turd. Boring. pointless and not the least bit scary. Buried underneath the cheap look, and wholesale borrowing of Neil Gaiman's Sandman-esque mythos is a simple, but not unaffecting fairy tale. I had a hard time getting into it, but once in, I was actually moved by the story and the sheer audacity it took to make a film on this scope for such a small budget.

Thérèse Raquin (1953)
A mostly interesting noir-ish drama by Marcel Carné, based on the novel by Émile Zola. However, for being based on a novel by a naturalist author and adapted by a director known for realism, it's such a movie. There are way too many unrealistic literary devices at play here to really be drawn in, but the film is still held together by some excellent performances (especially by Simone Signoret) and some truly wonderful sequences. Worth a watch.

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) Co-written by Dario Argento and Sergio Leone, how could this western not be awesome? Disappoint it did not. Sergio Leone is a master of scene building. Every scene that deserves significance gets attention, and like the watched pot that does not boil, his sense of timing is brilliant. The cast is perfect, with each character's backstory a secret, driving element of things to come. When a director gets his cast to really act, where we understand the players by the looks on their faces, the tormented souls from their eyes, that is when have something more than a simple flick, and that is what we have here, meat to sink our teeth into. Merci beaucoup.

Well if you arent too picky Elvis there are a ton of really entertaining movies with that theme, many of them released in the mid 70's after Jaws hit the screen. Please keep in mind that I am a big fan of B cinema and check out some of these Titles
Day of the Animals-1977. Leslie Nielsen as you have NEVER seen him!Basically the deal is that animals go berserk from fluorocarbons in the air and the depletion of our ozone and attack a bunch of hikers led my Christopher George.
Grizzly-1976. Follows the plot of everybody's favorite shark movie so closely that the makers of the film gave up and advertised it as Jaws with claws.
Night of the Lepus-1972.Whats more terrifying than giant mutated meat eating rabbits?
Food of the Gods-1976.Bert I Gordon directed. The giant animal fx vary between fairly impressive and absolutely terrible.
The Swarm-1978.Hysterically bad killer bee flick.Im sure you have seen this one or at least heard it mentioned as one of the worst movies of all time.Directed by disaster movie king Irwin Allen
Thats just a few EC.I hope you get a chance to check them out and you enjoy them.If you do you will find this sub-genre plentiful and mostly a hell of a lot of fun.

Murder Set Pieces: A fairly blah movie overall. The acting is pretty bad. The storyline, while it does have possibility is never really explored that well. The gore is pretty well done, but is predominantly shown after the fact which worked really well in Henry, but not quite so well in this one. Good enough to watch once, but I doubt I'd watch it again any time soon.

Yeh a lot of people seemed to have felt that way. I dug the build up too. I guess I watch a lot of 70s/80s stuff and a bunch of those flicks have a slower build up. Apart from House of the Devil being set in the 80s I thought it was more 70s in tone/style.

The World's Greatest Sinner (1962)
(In?)famous character actor Timothy Carey's only writer/director-effort is a truly bizarre one, both goofy and heavy. He even stars as a fiery and convicted advocate for Man as God, the "Super-human Being", in a story that must have been at least partly inspired by Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood. He plays passionate, Elvis/Jerry Lee Lewis-style rock 'n' roll, turning legions of people on to his "religion/political party" (clever, eh?), and so forth, then loses his way in the ensuing mess. Carey calls attention to the dangerousness of man's weakness to power, stale religion, and a host of other things, it seems. It's an awfully curious, but completely wonderful work; wholly B-grade production, with music by a young (and then-unknown) Frank Zappa and great cinematography by Ray Dennis Steckler!
Highly recommended.

The Yakuza (1974). This near classic is wonderful on many levels. First the story is brilliantly layered without appearing to be forced. The secret lives of everyone involved is more than believable, it is only human. This American movie somehow caught the ethic of the Japanese, without glamorizing or vilifying it. The pacing is wonderfully slow, and the head of steam that builds finally blows the lid off in the climax. The acting was strong, with Mitchum and Takakura each giving wonderful performances. As well, the rest of the cast are no slouches. More than just a story about honor, or a lack thereof, redemption seems to sum up the overall theme of this under-appreciated movie. Ashe.

Haha, sorry. I really enjoyed it. It's fun, totally over-the-top in more or less every way but still maintains some great character development. It really plays off of a bunch of your standard comic book tropes, too. It also pretty freely pisses in the face of political correctness. There's already quite a backlash over Hit Girl especially, calling her a "destructive role model", which is pretty asinine. Ugh.

Flame and Citron (2008). A story of two solid though human heroes that fought for a rather pure cause, but through not so pure channels. War, intrigue, and double dealing is nary a fresh subject, but the simplicity, and intensity, of our central characters makes for a great story. Based on real events, this story gives a fairly accurate account of the Danish response to Nazi occupation. The acting was wonderful, and the chemistry between our leads was almost palpable. The direction was strong. And while the camera work might have been a little hyperactive, i did not find it distracting in the least. All in all a wonderful flick from our Danish friends. Merci beaucoup.

I was worried at first - doesn't start out particularly strong - but man...once shit starts to hit the fan, it more than lives up to the name. My only gripe is that it was centered around the wrong character. Dave/"Kick-Ass" had his cool moments to be sure, but he was easily the least interesting character in the whole movie.

Sangre de mi Sangre (2007). This unflinching movie revolves around the desperate plight of the immigrant. The catch words are food and shelter: survival. We see how desperate people take towards desperate measures in order to survive. We cringe and yet try to understand, and we must come away with the notion that those aggressive, exploitative traits that we humans may express has made us survive as a species. The acting was first rate. And though the story revolved around some unbelievable coincidences, the twists and turns nevertheless entertain and add to the story and character development. The ending was unforeseen and perfect. The direction was superb. This was a painfully delightful watch. Merci beaucoup.

Agree with Disease & V. Didn't like the remake also. The twist at the end of the remake was easily predictable but more than that the killer's reason for all the killings was very funny & ridiculous. On the other hand the original was as V said, time passing typical 80's slasher.

Complete waste of my time.I dont have anything bad to say about the writing, primarily because the acting was so horrible it would have stunk up a work by Shakespeare.Unconvincing performances from top to bottom..and is it too much to ask for an actor to actually APPEAR frightened when they are supposed to be? Duck, You Sucker AKA A Fistful of Dynamite (1971). Sergio Leone may have just outdone himself with this film. A pooper at the box office, this is truly one of Leone's finest films. I must admit that it threatened to be otherwise, and about 1/3 of the way through it seemed to lose momentum. Looking back, it was only shifting gears from that of fun and silly entertainment to that of a serious movie making a profound statement. The acting was awesome, and Coburn's impressive skills were only overshadowed by a magnificent performance by Rod Steiger. Ernio Morricone's score brilliantly lent an emotional overtone, especially during the flashbacks that both gave answers and led to more questions. Duck, You Sucker is a perfect example of the coming of age of an ingenious director... Merci beaucoup.

Still, i did not like it, save for everything Rorchach.
I get you there...personally I found the comic did a better job, I mean the movie had most of what needed to be there but yeah...I thought the effects were pretty damn good and GREAT in the case of Rorschachs mask, the tone was nice and dark and I thought it was decent.
I think a lot of the characters had ways of making you not like them though.

Brilliant line, which was an ad lib from Cazale. There was a fair amount of improv. work within the film.
I guess I'll be a pedantic asshole at this moment too and point out it was Wyoming and not Minnesota, but the line still works perfectly either way.

Brother (2000). This Yakuza flick from Kitano may not be his absolute best, but it might just be his most violent. It might also be one of the most open display of fatalistic and grim humor as compared to his other flicks. The story itself is about honor, holding true commitments, and being true to oneself, even when that truth will but lead to heartbreak and suffering. This was a nice breakthrough for Takeshi in that he succeeds in the East meets West type of flicks, where such a pairing only leads to violent chaos. Overall a fun watch, albeit a tad violent. Merci beacoup.

Hills Run Red (2009). This was a simple backwoods horror flick done right. Not lacking in gore or brutality, the direction of this one is what seems to shine the most. As well, the cast really enjoyed working together, and this is almost palpable in this fun, sick thriller. The acting was solid for the genre, and the story itself decent enough. There are even some well received, gratuitous boob shots. Even the end credits were entertaining. All in all a must see for fans of the genre. Ashe.

In the Mouth of Madness
Personally, I find this film to be one of my favorite John Carpenter films. The atmosphere that this movie greats is fairly unsettling and is a great ode to Stephen King and H.P. Lovecraft. I felt that the movie was also aesthetically pleasing with the creatures and such that slowly revealed themselves in the movie.

Slightly disappointed by the way they tried to explain everything that happened in the first one, but a very decent watch nonetheless. A cameo which was unnecessary, and a twist which gave off an outlandish vibe. Its still fast-paced, very atmospheric and quite a solid little sequel.
Or maybe its just me and the high expectations I had going into this after the uber-high bar set by the original. Hope #3 lives up to the original a wee bit more than this one.

Sure it doesn't help when the movie sucks as much as Date Night. In fact the highlight for me was the couple's serious talk in the car about their relationship. That will probably be the only thing i'll remember from this movie in about a week. That and Wahlbergs upper body.

The Meat Grinder (2009)
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/4678/meatgrinder.jpg
Lately having some problems with the dvds of Asian films. Some of them are coming out without English subtitles and it was one of them! But I gave it a shot last night and just watched the whole film without understanding a single line.:D But as a psychological splatter flick it wasn't that difficult to follow as I thought it'd be.
It's like a Thai version of a Sweeney Todd tale in the form of a female psychopath who grinds her victims into meatballs for noodle soup.
The story centers around Boot, a single mother (who has a tortured & abused past) running a small noodle cart. When a dead guy ends up inside the cart one day she decides to see it as an opportunity and comes up with a new recipe! The bloodiness just escalates as more prey turn up, motivating Boot to expand her business from street-side noodle cart to a full-fledged restaurant business. Complications arise when she meets and falls for a young man who she met during a student riot.
This is obviously only a film for those with the strongest of stomachs. It is certainly nice to see some substance along with the splatter, and this elevates the film from being a mere gruesome freak show into something quite engaging. A solid mix of extreme gore and psycho character drama which is visually a nice treat indeed, specially for the jaded gorehounds.
I like to recommend it to Ferox, Elvis, V, Angra, Chrono & any other HDCian who don't mind to see some human body parts floating around in a blood shower frequently on screen.

I though it'd be a typical giallo. But despite adopting some of the conventions of the genre...the mystery maniac and tragic back-story, this is not a body-count movie and there is no black-gloved assassin. However it's a pretty fine & atmospheric 70's Euro horror with a good spooky story. Liked it.

I Sell the Dead (2008). This was a delightfully comedic horror flick. While the story itself was rather simple, the strength of this lovely film lies in the charming fashion in which the tale unravels, told in an appropriately choppy fashion. The back story itself develops into a minaciously driving force. The acting was perfectly solid, with great direction and editing as well. Mixing horror with comedy is more than just making a sloppy film, and this little tale was created with aplomb. Merci beaucoup.

I know I'm in the minority here, but, no, I didn't care for them. Actually, I really, really liked about the first half hour of the first film, when they were in the Shire. He really captured Tolkien's Shire, IMO, and brought it to life. As soon as they left the Shire, however, it lost the magic for me. Things and people didn't look and act like they were described in the books, IMO. They all had a very modern feeling to me, and were very much Jackson, and not so much Tolkien.

I thought Jackson did a pretty decent job with LOTR, but personally thought the animated film from Ralph Bakshi did a better job of capturing the feel of the books, it usually gets criticised heavily though. I think if you watch the Jackson LOTR before anything else you're probably going to appreciate it, but more people should check out the animated film 'cause its a really nice adaptation and has some real nice touches. Although, its worth pointing out it is only half the story and is lacking a sequel, its pretty much an unfinished project in that respect.

I've not seen this in years and all I can say is WOW. There is so much priceless stuff in this - there is some great 'pre-national geographic' footage of African tribes used on a green screen while Jane and her big white hunter cronies parade on front of it berating their customs and costumes. Other bits of note:
Jane undresses unfront of her father while slagging his prudishness (Maureen O'Sullivan is a real cutie in this)
The bad guys are white midgets in black face - they capture people and drop down the killer ape pit.

When a porter falls over a cliff some one asks what was in the box he was carrying.
White people try to shoot/kill every living creature in the Jungle.
All elephants wear huge false ears - of all the gaffs in this film who people in the 30's really know the difference between African and Indian elephants.
My only dissapointment is that they only say 'JuJu' once in the whole file. But disspite all this its a great Jungle romp and Johnny's hair has oodles of charm - Cheetah on the otherhand has yet to come into his/her own.
It was actually a lot cheaper looking than I remember - so it'll be interesting to see how shoestring it gets onces the series is handed over to RKO.

The Brood (1979). With a premise that sounds anything but scary, this wonderful flick is truly chilling. Cronenburg takes his real-life pain and "manifests" it onto celluloid. The result is wonderful. With a perfect balance of on and off screen terror, this film is definitely a classic. The acting was great, with perfectly perfect performances by the main players. The kills were pretty aggressive, eliciting that beloved wincing of great horror flicks. The direction of course was phenomenal. This all time classic reveals that terror can definitely come in small packages. Merci beaucoup.

Wow its out at last (not that i have demand though)
Somehow I figured you'd know about this. I wanted to call it a black comedy, but it's so intense, so unrelentingly violent and graphic I couldn't.

Human Centipede (First Sequence)
Very intense and graphic. A mad doctor grafts three people, front to end, into a creature he calls a human centipede. Bloody, bizarre, gross, crazy...
Available On Demand right now, even though it's playing in limited release in theatres. Check it out if you're into this kind of thing.
this sounds pretty awesome, cant wait to check it out.

Although they frigged up alot of their "remake" scenes, I really enjoyed this movie, they made a surprisingly amazing action figure for this movie, I really liked the actor who portrayed the new freddy krueger, I also liked a lot of this particular plot, and how Freddy was more concerned with getting revenge, than killing.

The Transporter (2002). Pretty much a by the numbers action flick. While the action was over the top, the story itself was pretty mundane. The backdrop of the French Mediterranean did make for comfy repose for the eyes, but all in all it was a rather prosaic, action-laced affair. Maybe worth a watch, but nothing special. Ashe.

Avatar: I don't really know what to make of this one. Some aspects of the film I really enjoyed. That said, I have had my fill of sanctamonious story telling. The film pushed boundries in many ways but, for me, aspects of the film were almost retarded to the point of naivety. Do we really need to be told by mulit millionaire film makers the route of all evil is a corporate world and the only nobility to be found in life is via primative cultures? Save the planet, protect historical cultures, work a 50+ hour week, bring up a family and feel guilty about every luxury you ever have. I'm off home in my jet now, I might make another $300 movie in a few years telling you how cruel you all are.
OK, rant over. I enjoyed the film, I thought the acting was a bit hit and miss at times, but I thought the landscapes were beautiful. Regret not seeing it at the cinema, but I still thought it flowed nicely and looked great. Some quality action too.

Despite the fact that it is four hours and ten minutes, I really enjoyed it. Now I know its a miniseries, but with the DVD set it is presented more as a movie, so its kind of how I take it.

I'm not sure how many of us here have already seen this Michael Haneke's latest film (it was nominated in last Oscar as the Best Foreign Language film & Best Achievement in Cinematography category), the reason I'm saying it cause it won't be fair to give some comments or a review until a good number of dedicated film lovers here seen this Magnificent film. I don't like to spoil a bit of fun for you by discussing any thing regarding this masterpiece.
I'd rather suggest you to go & watch it asap without having any kind of idea about the story or expectations like the way I have just seen it last night & it just blew me away! One of the few best of best films that I have came across in recent years.
But I can't control myself to give away a little spoiler...this will give you the tastes of every great genre in high quality.
Highly recommended to Fortunato, _V_, NE, Doc, Chrono, Psycho_D &.....everyone!

The Counterfeiters (2007). This period flick was a splendid take on moral ambiguity and how far one should go to save one's skin. The occasional brutality in this film is naked and alarmingly sterile. The acting was sublime, with the two protagonists playing against each other perfectly. The direction and camera work were remarkable as well. This is simply a must see for any fan of great foreign cinema. Ashe.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984)
Starring Robert Englund as Freddy Kruger and Heather Langenkamp as Nancy Thompson and introducing Johnny Depp as Glen Lantz. Great movie, enjoyed the original movie.
