"The Return Of Swamp Thing" (1989)
-Dick Durock,

Plot: IMDB
The Swamp Thing returns to battle the evil Dr. Arcane, who has a new science lab full of creatures transformed by genetic mutation, and chooses Heather Locklear as his new object of affection.

Phantom's Review: Remember when comic book movies sucked big time? Well, pop this turkey in your DVD player and relive those glorious days of yesteryear. See truly awful acting (despite a good cast) horrible directing (Jim Wynorski, so what else can you expect) and just general all around crap. Perfect for Bad Movie Night or if you want to torture any friends of yours who happen to be fans of the comic book.

Wow 4 out of 5? That's a pretty high grade for such a generic remake. I enjoyed it but it was really nothing new and it was pretty predictable.

Most of those slasher movies are predictible but this one had a little more class to it.

I really don't see how it had any class. There was nothing different about it then any other slasher movie especially those that came out during the craze.

The Bronson one was definitely better but I enjoyed that one too. You should fully give the original a spin one of the better flicks of the 70s IMO.

Wasn't a fan of Statham but he's won me over after The Expendables. Dug Blitz too.

Pumpkinhead (1988)

Above average 80's horror movie definitely. Really cool creature and the special effects in general are pretty damned cool. Not one of my favourite horrors but certainly worth watching.

7.5/10

Near Dark (1987)

Holy shit, this movie is one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. Awesome story and characters and very well directed. Moody, atmospheric and overall just badass. The whole cast is great (particularly Bill Paxton who steals the show in my opinion).

This one is easily one of my new fave vampire flicks.

8.5/10

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

This movie creeps me out hardcore. A superb cast keeps this odd tale grounded in reality and the direction is supremely chilling and well executed.

All the elements of a great horror film are there: mood, exciting plot, believable sympathetic characters, and a chilling concept all brought together by a slow methodical build up.

One of the classics of the genre.

Atrocious (2010)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/ATROCIOUS.jpg

A old, abandoned & maze like garden...now that's a great & easy setting for a filmmaker to create some effective spooky moments for the audience. And in this case they succeeded 50-50. But that doesn't mean it's an another mediocre POV-horror feature. Instead I'd say this is pretty fun & enjoyable Spanish 'found-footage' film with only 70 minutes length. Liked the twist at the end but that's kinda comes from nowhere; as if it was a last minute decision in order to try & give the audience "something new".

The Whistleblower (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0896872/) (2010)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/Whistleblower.jpg

Inspired by actual events, the film tells the story of Kathryn Bolkovac, an American former police investigator from Nebraska who later signed on with a company called Democra (a pseudonym for the real world DynCorp) that had a security contract with the United Nations. As she begin working as U.N. International Police Force monitor she gradually becomes aware of a wide-scale, child sex-slave and human-trafficking scandal involving officials of U.S. military contractor: Democro Corp (DynCorp) and the United Nations in post-war Bosnia. She risks her job and her own safety to uncover & report that many "peacekeeping" police officers were even paying for prostitutes and participating actively in sex-trafficking. And so soon it turns out a battle against The UN, governments, and private contractors as Democro later fired Kathryn from her job.

This is quite a bit of heart wrenching film that shows a part of hidden & ugly face of UN's "peacekeeping" missions which is a bastard child of dirty world politics, IMO. The frustrating thing is after Kathryn's whistleblowing, a number of 'peacekeepers' including private contractors were sent home. None have been prosecuted, as they enjoy immunity from prosecution in Bosnia and even none forced criminal charges in their home countries. The private contractor that fired Kathrun continues business with the US Govt including contracts worth billions in Iraq & Afghanistan. And that just makes me wonder how the UN & those private contractors are now contributing to keep "peace" in those war-ridden countries of the world.

Last but not the least, kudos to Mrs. Daniel Craig, for giving a splendid performance as Kathryn Bolkovac; that I hope will get the deserved recognition in coming award seasons.

"The Last Exorcism" (2010)
Plot: IMDB
In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the evangelical Reverend Cotton Marcus was raised by his father to be a preacher. He agrees that the filmmaker Iris Reisen and the cameraman Daniel Moskowitz make a documentary about his life. Cotton tells that when his wife Shanna Marcus had troubles in the delivery of their son Justin, he prioritized the doctor help to God and since then he questions his faith. Further, he tells that exorcisms are frauds but the results are good for the believers because they believe it is true. When Cotton is summoned by the farmer Louis Sweetzer to perform an exorcism in his daughter Nell, Cotton sees the chance to prove to the documentary crew what he has just told. They head to Ivanwood and they have a hostile reception from Louis's son Caleb. Cotton performs the exorcism in Nell, exposing his tricks to the camera, but sooner they learn that the dysfunctional Sweetzer family has serious problems.

Phantom's review: Some of these documentary/Lost footage style movies are quite good ("Cloverfield", "rec") and some are a major pile of crap.
Unfortunately "The Last Exorcism" falls into the second category. While the acting is good, this film goes nowhere fast. Absolutely no scares or suspense and a terribly anti-climatic ending. A total waste of time.

Cry Baby Lane (2000)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/CryBabyLane.jpg

It was a TV movie that aired on a Halloween edition of SNICK, Nickelodeon's Saturday night block of tween programming. It was a children's horror movie, much like their hit show Are You Afraid of the Dark?, but there was just one little problem: it was way too scary for the age demographic that it was aimed at. So said thousands of parents, anyway, and they bombarded Nickelodeon with complaints about their airing of this vile material. Thus, Nickelodeon never aired it again, sealed it away in their vaults, and pretended that it never even existed.

It was actually nothing but a simple & very average 80's feel like TV film for the kids that unnecessarily created lots of fuss at back then & remain as lost for the good until someone found it lately & posted on a site.

Attack the Block:

Awesome movie. Probably the best movie I've seen all year. Seriously. The actors were great. The alien effects were understated, but worked perfectly. I can't really fund fault in this movie at all. Although I will say that Nick Frost really brought nothing to this film other than a "Oh hey! Look! It's that guy," kind of moment. But I guess they wanted at least one big name guy in the film to draw people in. Kinda too bad because the movie would hold up on its own quite well without him.

Red State:

This movie really should be titled "Red State (Or why Kevin Smith should stick to making comedies about sucking dick and fucking donkeys.) What a disappointment. Sure there are a ton of big name people in this. Big deal. The plot is boring, the movie doesn't feel the least bit fresh at all, and I really didn't care about a single character in the movie. A bad guy dies? Oh well. A good guy dies? *yawn* Plus it seemed like Smith was trying to pull a Tarantino by having some long, drawn out talking scenes. (He didn't pull it off.) Smith also tries to rip a page from Family Guy's schtick-book and have a few scenes of pure dead silence. (It was just as boring as when Family Guy does it so I guess he accomplished it.) In the end I was just glad the movie was over.

An elderly woman's creepy voice over coming from the other end of that cool old telephone set mostly done the job effectively. Liked the gloomy & dark setting of the film also. The story was pretty simple with a little twist at the end and that actually made it bit interesting but that only runs in last 10 to 15 minutes. The credit goes to the main actors who done their job quite convincingly.

But the film has a major problem. And that's the camera works. Yeah...it was one of those 'art-house' feel like films that got the misplaced, unnecessary & annoying type of camera works...The camera was rarely steady, it went in and out of focus so many times that it was frustrating to watch. Always zoom in & out, too much closeup shots in everywhere & nowhere and especially somewhat like someones staking or following the characters all the time. I don't know why people make films like this way? Probably to add an extra depth in to the characters in order to 'realize or feel' their pains or sufferings..blah-blah...I don't have a clue or give a damn; perhaps this is a non-conventional 3D approach. Or perhaps it was meant to be artistic but it failed horribly. The thing is here the director used a hand held camera approach and personally I don't hate the 'shakey cam' style in a POV/ found footage or documentary film. But this isn't a POV/FF or documentary sort of film, so I don't get the idea why the hell they need to went with this approach that would eventually ruined the film for most of genre film viewers?! I'm sure there wasn't a single tripod, pedestal or track used in the film. The camera jerked all over the place most of the time....A Horrible Way to Film for a director as well as A Horrible Way to watch a film & follow what's happening in it for the viewers!

last movies i watched where:
- urban legend
- urban legend's 2 final cut
- urban legend's 3 bloody Mary

least to say the fist one wasn't great but i felt that it was the best of the bunch, with the second one following how most sequels do and fall off a bit, wasn't as entertaining as first to say the least. the third one wasn't too bad i think it gave the trilogy a welcomed breath of fresh air and semi made up for the poor proformance of UL2.

Looking forward to this. Hope I'm not too hyped to for it though - an actual decent MMA fighter (though there seems to be a ton of em in there anyway)..

Is Kurt Angle the main bad guy? Same they gave the role to a pro wrestler rather than an actor or real fighter. But I reserve judgment til i see it.

Yeah he plays the big bad russian that's like never been defeated.

I get your point but at least with Kurt, he's still an olympic gold medalist. Thats at least better then if The Rock of Hulk Hogan were in there. Imagine if it had been Fedor Emelianenko though? Kurt's character seemed like a movie version of him anyway.

Creature (2011)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/Creature11.png

This is a below average B-movie like rubber suit-creature feature where most of the kills/deaths take place off-screen. There's some little boobies here & there & the only good thing is it has Sid Haig. But the surprising part is (as I read on different sites) this awful little flick somehow got the release on the theaters! When there's plenty of much better films with a bigger & decent budget releasing direct-to-DVD then how come this one managed to get on the big screen??!!

United 93

Of course I know the events of 9/11 were terrible but honestly, I'm not one to post "RIP all those lost etc" on Facebook and have...let's say...controversial...views on American policy both before and after those events.

I thought this film was brilliant. Regardless of political views and anything to do with America, this film just showed that it was totally innocent people on routine flights that were doomed. The scenes in the flight control areas were ones of absolute confusion and mayhem - real life is not like an action film where the bad guys can just be tracked and stopped when there are thousands of other flights in the air all around. The scenes on the United Airlines Flight 93 itself were, from what we can know, very realistic and heartbreaking when action was taken too late. My heart was genuinely beating faster towards the end even though I've heard so many times how that flight ends. The sheer panic and desperation was captured brilliantly and that just isn't achieved by many "true story" films that I've seen. Not only did it show the victims and administation side of things but even the hijackers themselves were seen to be human. They were unsure of what they were doing and panicked when they thought they were going to be taken over by the passengers who fought back. Of course this is the negative side of being human; cowardly, vicious and pig-headed...but human nonetheless.

So much is said about 9/11 and how it changed America and the world but this brought it back to the thing that is really sad. That so many people died for absolutely no fucking reason whatsoever.

So much better than World Trade Centre, which was on TV the night before this. I forgot all about the real story and just didn't want Nicholas Cage to survive. ;P

BAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - We actually almost went to see Creature in the theater this weekend... But, oh God, the previews looked so bad - We just couldn't do it.

An intense, grim little film. And I have to applaud Soderbergh specifically for making me feel dirty, dirty, DIRTY during and after the film (every time someone coughed in the theater, I wanted to spritz them with anti-bacterial spray).

Gripping character piece with incredible acting from everyone, most notably Damon, Law, Winslet, and Rex.

I enjoyed it - Thought it was good, but not necessarily mind-blowing. Recommended, but no need to pay the theater price.

3.5/5.

"Priest" (2011)

Plot: IMDB

PRIEST, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, is set in an alternate world -- one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece's boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills. Written by Screen Gems

Phantom's Review: My Recipe For "Priest":
One part: "The Matrix"
One part: "Mad Max"
A dash of : "Judge Dredd"
A pinch of :"Batman"
Add in some vampires (the scary kind, not the twinkly, sparkly kind)
and a huge spoonful of westerns (spaghetti flavor)
mix together and there you have it :"Priest"
Actually I thought this was a very entertaining action packed movie. Ive never had a chance to read the original comic book, so I didn't known what to expect, but the movie surprised me. It was fun and enjoyable.

"Last Train From Gun Hill " (1959)
-Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn

Plot: IMDB

The wife of marshal Matt Morgan is raped and murdered. The killers leave behind a distinctive saddle, that Morgan recognises as belonging to his old friend Craig Belden, now cattle baron in the town of Gun Hill. Belden is sympathetic, until it transpires that one of the murderers is his own son Rick, whom he refuses to hand over. Morgan is determined to capture Rick and take him away by the 9.00 train; but he is trapped in the town alone, with Belden and all his men now looking to kill him.

Phantom's Review: Excellent western drama. Kirk Douglas is intense as the Marshall hunting his wife's killer and Quinn is superb as the man protecting his son, but sympathetic to his old friend. Light on action, but big on suspense, character and some great acting. . This is one of the greats

Well this was....different.

It definitely held my interest and by the end i'd say i liked it but i really hated the villains in the movie. I've always despised the evil religious murderer character who thinks they're doing God's will especially in this movie. Cooper was beyond annoying. The way he talked, that stupid little dance and everything he said made me want to punch myself out of frustration. I never thought i would see a more annoying villain then Mrs. Carmody from The Mist but there you go.

Funny thing is, even though i love villains (obviously) you're not supposed to. The point of a villain is to make you hate them and root for them to lose so in that aspect it worked. Although i don't think the intent should be to annoy the audience so much that they turn it off.

Either way, i liked it but didn't love it.

The Last House on the Left (1972) - Honestly, I wasn't expecting much going in to this. After watching it, I can say I was pleasantly surprised. There were no performances that blew me away, but the vileness of the villains carried the film to an uneasiness that is hard to match. The villains were cast really well and that's what makes this film so enjoyable. (Enjoyable might not be the right word, but it is a really good film.) I think this is my favorite Wes Craven movie.

After the first 7 minutes i had to as well. You knew what was coming anyways.

An important movie nevertheless and not a bad watch. I personally just don't appreciate being disturbed. But unlike Eden Lake for instance, this one actually had a message to tell.

What'd you think of them V? I had a blast with both...they were definitely among the weaker superhero fare of the summer (nothing compared to First Class or Cap), but still thought they were damn good fun, especially Thor.

Loved them both, especially Thor.

2nd time seeing them (saw them in the theater when they were first released) and I appreciated Thor a lot more, and I thought Kenneth Branagh made a real classy superhero film.

Not in the class of X-Men First Class, though.

Green Lantern was a childhood dream come true. Grew up reading all those GL comics of the 80s and I always wanted to see one of my favorite superheroes on the big screen, and it became a reality. The highlights were undoubtedly Sinestro, CG-ed Parallax and the world of Oa, and the sore point? Ryan Reynolds. He has to be the most annoying choice to play Hal Jordan. Also, a stronger script might have helped the film as well. I thought a lot of things happened too quickly, and the actors were more cardboarded in their actions, with Reynolds giving exasperated looks more than once.

Both films look absolutely gorgeous in High-Def. Specially Thor.

"Insidious" (2011)
-Rose Byrne

Plot: IMDB
story of a family in search of help for their son, Dalton, who fell into a mysterious coma on one ordinary morning. Little do they know that there is much more to this endless sleep than meets the eye as they explore the paranormal, and rediscover the past; the key to getting their son back once and for all.

Phantom's Review: Excellent, old fashioned ghost story. No splashy special FX. no over the top acting, just good solid performances from the all the stars a wonderful creepy atmosphere.and some genuine chills. This is what a ghost story should be like.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2011)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/DBAOTD.jpg

One of the best parts that I like in the 1973 original film was its cute little creatures & they were surprisingly adorable. The film was beautifully spooky and one of the best 'made-for-TV' horror films of 70's, IMO. So, in this meaningless remake, the first thing that upset me most was when I found that the creatures got an entirely new look this time & they're somewhat looks like rats! Moreover, they got too much exposure, even there are some moments when they don't even that much bother about the lights; where one of the significant things about the creatures in the original film was they were creatures of the dark...that lives & move around in the dark. Next, their spooky whispering voices aren't that much clear here which they very nicely handled in the original film. And finally, I don't get why nobody made a minimal attempt to save the person that the creatures took away in the final showdown, while he/she was right in front of them & for some good amount of time remained stuck in a pretty unusual place before the creatures do their job.

The original film is also a favorite film of world wide acclaimed film maker Guillermo del Toro who even said (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Be_Afraid_of_the_Dark_%281973_film%29#Lega cy) "It was something close to my heart for a very long time, We thought the movie was the most terrifying on Earth." So I don’t get if he admire the original film so much then what made him to get involved in this remake where he not only produced it but also co-wrote the screenplay. If it was for money, then I like to say he has done a contradictory thing as being a good fan of the original or if he was thinking to save it from a bad or ridiculous 'remake' treatment then I'd say he succeed 50%...means with a good cast, setting & camera work this is a decent horror film pleasantly suitable for the very young horror fans and surely who haven't seen the original film yet.

Like zombiedrone said I weren't really sure what to make of it-the spooky fx n soundtrack were very good and I did enjoy watching it but I wouldn't say it was a standout film-not seen the remake.

Just saw Alice, sweet alice aka Communion (1976) which I did enjoy much more than I expected although the "fatso" landlord with the piss stain around his fly will haunt me forever.

Also "Fright" (1971) I'm afraid its another film with an OTT hammy and cheesily unrealistic killer that its impossible to find in any way menacing-nearly switched it off with boredom towards the end. Not worth recommending

Fantastic, engaging, and absolutely intriguing documentary.

Description:

An urban mystery unfurls as one man pieces together the surreal meaning of hundreds of cryptic tiled messages that have been appearing in city streets across the U.S. and South America.

I really liked it - Well-crafted; like watching a mystery unravel. What I also liked about it is that the star, Justin Duerr, is interesting to follow and the director did a good job in tying in his story and history as well.

Definitely recommended - Good little film.

Shit loads of uniteresting footage and the rest is pretty much just people running with handheld cameras while yelling and screaming. Yea, like Blair Witch Project. I'm sure the characters sees a lot of scary shit. We don't. We just get to hear about it.

Megan Is Missing wasn't horrible, it was actually very decent. My problem was the last 20 or so minutes. Although it was mostly implied the end was disturbing. Watching a guy dig for 10 minutes got boring(as well as the teen drama) but I suppose it served its purpose. I'd give the movie 8/10.

Insidious on Blu-Ray. Well, the storyline started out well but towards the end everything just seemed rushed and blew out of proportion. Yes, it has one or two jumpy moments in there but nothing to scare you. 5/10

A childhood favorite, felt wonderful to revisit it. The infamous basketball death scene still has that shock quality. Another small detail which I noticed was, Anne Ramsey's TV was playing The Bad Seed!

Oh, and did I mention Kristy Swanson, the delicious dish and my childhood crush. (from this very movie!)

Do not be fooled by the trailers this is NOT a horror movie repeat NOT a horror movie! In the first 20 minutes it might seem like on but after the oh so obvious twist it turns into a mystery/drama but not a bad one at that. Do not think of "Dream House" as a horror movie and you just might like it. a good mystery/drama film not much horror.

The first 2 films were such good entries in the foreign slasher sub-genre, and it's a tad disappointing that this prequel falls well short of their quality. Nevertheless, it has some good cinematography and a couple of interesting kills, but sadly not much else. The background story of child abuse has been done before, and in much better fashion as well.

All in all, watch this if you are a completist fan of the Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) films. If not, skip it and you won't be missing much. The first two are the good ones.

Watched "Dont be afraid of the dark" by Guillermo del Toro like week ago.

It wasn´t so scary in the beginning but it did attack several of my childhood fears such as monsters under the bed and creatures roaming in the dark and attacking children.

When it was over, I thought to myself "Oh well, at least I´ll be able to sleep well today"

I was horribly wrong...

Evil "Santa" movies are a hard sell i think. The genre is pretty gimmicky to begin with and i think filmmakers know this and as a result don't take it very seriously when making the movie. Really, the only good Evil Santa movie i've seen is Rare Exports.

The acting is really bad made even worse by the godawful dubbing. There's no buildup or attempt to create a scary mood and the movie doesnt focus on story or characters at all. Also the cops in the movie are really annoying. If that's really how the police are in Amsterdam, i fear for those people.

Maybe i would have enjoyed this more if i had watched it around Christmas time (even though its not a Christmas movie) but i dont think it would have helped.

I agree.

I snuck into the theater to see the original COTC back in the day, and it was brutal.
I'm a King fan so I pretty much had to see it.

That was quite a shocker to me considering it was back in the pre-cable tv and VCR days.

As a regular movie viewer before rating or grading a film I try to consider (not always) different parts of that particular film...like story, characterization, dialog, screenplay, camera work etc. And I agree considering most of those parts this movie as a sequel turned out terrible indeed. But there are also some area where I think they did an average or to some extent a decent job i.e. camera work & lights. Considering those factors I gave it a 'D' instead of 'F'.
Moreover, making a movie isn't an easy job in comparing to rating or reviewing a film and whether intentionally or not you make a bad or even an utterly crap movie I believe there's always at least one, two or few people involved in that process tries to give their best effort (at least at some point in the process) to make it look good. Even in every bad movie or any form of arts there's at least some people tries to work with a good intention at some point in development phase, I believe. Yeah, any bad movie instantly wastes some of the very valuable hours of my life but I think I should take some part of that blame for myself also as it was me who knowingly or unknowingly decided to watch that bad movie. However, every unseen or new film has this 'wast of time' risk for me and as being a regular movie viewer/lover, I don't mind to take that risk most of the time.

When A Stranger Calls (1979) I was pleasantly surprised by this-it made up for its very unoriginal plot by utilizing a realistic bad guy character plus racketed up some genuinely tense and creepy moments.
