by the way, has anyone seen the case of the bloody iris/what are those strange drops of blood doing on jennifer's body?
is it worth checking out?
Definitely. It has a super hot female lead (makes for mouth-watering viewing ;) ), and a decent plot. The kill sequences arent great IMO, but not bad either.
Dont expect a Argento/Bava-esque atmosphere, and you will enjoy it.
Anybody know if Ritual is on par with this one and Demon Knight?
Demon Knight was the best of the lot. I was rather disappointed with Bordello, and Ritual proved to be even more disappointing. Skip it if you dont have to watch it, Des.

Death At A Funeral.
And this was supposed to be funny...how? A stale attempt at crude and bawdy humor, but falls considerably short of eliciting laughs. Eminently forgettable, but has its moments.

House of Wax (1953)
Besides Price's performance, mostly everything in this movie is actually second rate when compared to its 1933 predecessor, Mystery of the Wax Museum. It does boast some genuine thrills, though, and has some truly fun sideshow horror effects.

A History of Violence
I first went to see this at the movies when it came out with my brothers but they thought it was boring (we only stayed for the first ten minutes.) so we left and went to see Into the Blue. (OMFG horrible decision.)
So anyways I watched this again finally and boy is it amazing. I love the way it just comes out of no where and Viggo Mortensen just starts killing these people and stuff. Plus seeing Maria Bello's bush is well worth it. :)

The Deaths of Ian Stone.
Starts off with an interesting concept of a guy being murdered each day and then waking up in a different life. Of course it's just Groundhog Day remade as a horror movie, but it sounded promising. Then you find out what's really going on and it's a steep, slippery slope of cheese. It's rather weak as far as the gore goes, the effects otherwise are pretty cool, and the acting is mediocre at best. I guess it's alright as a rental, but maybe only if someone else is paying for it. :p

There's a screener copy on a website I visit. I won't post it since I'm not sure about the rules here and movie sites and whatnot.
Anyway, the movie. Well, I could detract from all the negatives, which there are many of, and only speak on the positives. But there are none. In short: The zombies climb walls. Terrible film, I want to roll up a newspaper and slap the director and the writer on the nose.

powell and pressburger's black narcissus (1947)
a pretty powerful look at a convent buried deep in the himalayas as they, along with the surrounding community, deal with heavy emotions and a bit of psychosis, all of which become mixed and increase, resulting in a climax that comes off over-the-top and even frightening. the film begins well and ends strongly, but the middle seems to sag a bit.

Holy shit! I was just telling my friend that that is one of my favorite performances. Period.
The fact that she goes from playing timid, innocent preacher to barbaric, looney robot is just mind-blowing...easily the most versatility any actor/actress had show thus far in cinema. Her jerky, sporadic movements are exquisite.

Really fucking cool. Samuel, the Amish dude is sweeter than Bub. There are a few weak moments, but the suspense is great, the gore is awesome (even though rather digi-looking) and some of the acting is great. The comedic moments (of which Romero is so fond) are the very best comedic moments he has ever crafted, genuinely funny & really suspenseful.
Afterward, George Romero was interviewed by John Landis and everyone (Greg Nicotero, Romero, Landis, Robert Rodriquez, Mick Garris, Johnny Legend & Adrien Barbeau) had drinks over at the Pig & Whistle. I introduced myself to George, who asked me to say "hello" to Dario when I speak with him next.:D

Boardinghouse 1982 - This was one hella weird movie. Kinda like Franco on bad blow bought in a restroom at a frat party during the 80s! It had telekenetics, slasher like deaths, 80s generic bands and soundtracks, big hair, and boobs. Mediocre idea, cheap execution, and maddening fun for the tasteless!
The Slaughter 2007 - Ok, I loved and Hated this one. Two thirds of the movie had inane dialogue, generic and archetypical characters, and poor CGI (the hated part), however the last third of the movie had some decent wordplay, character interaction between 3 of that points survivors, good horror references, funny one liners and some hands on gore! I swear it was like there were multiple directors (only credit is Jay Lee to the writing, editing and directing I think).
Not only was the above a bit schizo but the story was the same. Is it a supernatural thriller, a gothic horror, a comedy gone bad or just another rip off of Evil Dead???

Okay...I saw this with an open mind, knowing that it can in NO WAY match Romero's original, and I was wrong.
Yep you read that right. I was wrong.
For the movie is WORSE. We got zombies doing unthinkable and outrageous things throughout the movie, and the casting looks totally out of place. The single mild entertaining factor is Nick Cannon's character, and the direction is anything but decent. This terrible mish-mash of a movie sharing the same name with a Romero great makes me feel sick to the stomach, but well...

Fucking awesome, after watching Cloverfield last week, it left a bad taste in my mouth towards doco-horror. I had avoided almost everything to do with Diary up untill seeing it so was not aware it was in this style. I did think the name was curious.
But after the inital shock and Cloverfield flashback, I settled into one brilliant piece of film making. George A Romero is one man you can trust to put the bread on the table then grab it and shove it down your throat.
I also like his message on the media, as all his Dead movies have held subtext to the social state we live in this one did in a very modern way.

Jackie Brown- 8/10
Michael Clayton--very well acted movie but not sure George Clooney deserves best actor.....Tom Wilkinson on the other hand should get "best supporting" award.
American Gangster--another well acted movie and they capture the era perfectly.Could have used a bit more violence.

agreed, for sure.
i read an oscar thing in an issue of entertainment weekly a month or so ago. they were talking about javier bardem in the best supporting actor category and they said something like:
"usually the question is, 'who are the five guys that will get a best supporting actor nod this year?' but this year, the question is, 'who are the four poor schlubs that have to go up against javier bardem this year?'"
i thought that was pretty funny.

The Simpsons Movie ~ even though I haven't watched the show in a long time, I really did enjoy it. Its fun.
The Gingerdead Man ~ okay, a movie about a homicidal cookie, played by Gary Busey. It should be hilarious dammit. Its not. Oh well....*sighs* ;)
Trauma ~ I have always had a soft spot for this one, even though it certainly isn't one of Argento's best.
The Gravedancers ~ except for Reincarnation I haven't really cared for the After Dark Horrorfest films I have seen so far. I actually liked this one. Got a little corny at the end though.
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints ~ REALLY liked this film, and not only because I am huge Robert Downey Jr. fan....though that helps.

I saw that film recently as well. I thought it would be a chick movie, but it was actually pretty funny. BTW I just read in the paper that her killer got 25 to life last week, and he said "All I want is her family's forgiveness", to which the judge responded "I doubt you'll be getting that."

It was an excellent night at he New Beverly theater last night. A Great double-bill of hard-to-find slashers
Torso(1973)
The print was totally grindhouse; the picture was stained and scratched and even burnt in a few frames, the sound was fucked, but the film is still a classic. Beautiful locations and lots of nudity suffer at the hands of terrible dialog and ham-fisted exposition. But it is in the long, dialog free sections where this movie shines. These beautifully shot wordless moments are tense as hell and as fine an example of visual storytelling as you'll see anywhere.
7.5/10
Pieces(1982)
Having never seen this one, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I'm really glad to have experienced it on the big screen with a house full of rabid fans. The story is trashy and stooooooopid, but hilariously so. Here it is in a nutshell: A little kid hacks him mom to pieces and blames it on "a big guy" - 40 years later a killer is hacking up co-ed at a college... with a chainsaw.
The chainsaw gore is great, the tits are plentiful, the dialog is fucking hilarious and the plot is retarded. At one point a small Asian man pops into frame and starts kung-fu-ing our heroine...and then he leaves, never to be mentioned again. And the Completely out-of-the-blue ending makes the Carrie ending seem logical and tame.
6/10 (I loved it, but really can't rate it any higher)

X Men: The Last Stand.
I decided to give this one another go last night, and after my experience watching it last summer at the theater...I was skeptical. But...I liked it the second time around.
First things first, there was a lot happening all at the same time, yet it didnt look overcrowded like Spider Man 3 did, with its considerably lesser cast.
***(Minor Spoiler Warning)***
Secondly, I have to give some credit to Famke Janssen, for pulling off The Phoenix and Jean Grey-multiple personality and confused-and-dazed character quite nicely. And, believe it or not...I was actually touched by the commemorative funeral scene of Xavier at the school.
Colossus as a character was grossly underplayed, and they made Scott Summers aka Cyclops look like a total wussy throughout the series, and wrote him off early in this one (which is one of my bigger complaints, apart from them not introducing Gambit).
I guess the twist in the ending after the credits roll was to keep the continuation going, but I dont see much future in the series unless they get someone as good as Singer back into this...or else this is headed the Batman-Burton franchise way. I have been keeping tabs regarding the 4th, and from all which I have been reading, it isnt happening anytime soon.
Lets hope Wolverine and Magneto do some justice to this franchise and bring it back on track. My preference - a David Goyer X-Men 4, with either Christian Bale or Colin Farrell as Gambit, and a script which includes the return of Jean Grey, Xavier and Cyclops...in some form or the other.
Rating - *** ½

^ Sort of a hidden gem of 2007, in my opinion. I dug it quite a bit.
Spiral. First, let me say... the cinematography is stunning. Equally so are the set designs. I'm a sucker for responsive camera shots, and long-takes in which the camera pans and swings around without edits. I'm also a big fan of strong color palettes. Some scenes reminded me of the set in Hard Candy. I dug the Jazz portion of the soundtrack, but there were a few other musical pieces thrown in there that didn't quite mesh. Joel David Moore was excellent in his role. In fact, the three big cast members were all quite good... but Joel certainly stood out in great contrast (haha... yeah, you need to watch the movie to get why I highlighted that.) I was surprised that Zachery Levi played a role so out of his television fare (I'm a fan of Chuck...) Loved the character Amber Tamblyn played. Very smile-worthy. Her range in this film is outstanding. She definitely has talent.
Oh, and that ending... I won't say anything about it. I thought it was okay, and then I loved it. Does that make sense? Watch the movie and you'll see. I don't want to say that much about it.
Recommended. An indie hitchcockian film with a jazzy soundtrack, strong colour palette, and excellent performances.

Joy Division
It was the U.K premiere and I was there....
A doco on the band, It was good, if you don't know a lot about them and want to then you should see it.
I have already read and seen so much about them that I didn't find out anything new except for maybe one or two stories. I would have liked it if they had of played full versions of Joy Divisions tv apearances instead of just the first minute. Seeing some live songs throughout would have given it a bit more feeling.

Alien vs Predator: Requiem. (again)
Fun filled romp, with plenty of throwback scenes to Alien, Aliens and the original Predator. I still like this one better than Anderson's brainless vehicle. (guilty pleasure or not, nevertheless...)
Ohh btw, the Predalien kicks some serious butt (although he can be somewhat of a wussy in some scenes).

The Doors (1991)
Too romantic when it shouldn't be, and vice versa. On the whole, though, it's a fascinating take on Jim Morrison and his insane whirlwind of a life, and a mostly accurate depiction of the rise and fall of one of the greatesdt bands of all time.

Diary of the Dead
It's been a long time since I've seen a great zombie horror movie like this one. The social commentary wasn't subtle but that was easily overlooked thanks to the atmosphere and gore. I loved Shaun of the Dead and Fido but they were mostly black comedies. I the Resident Evil movies which were basically action flicks, I enjoyed Land of the Dead, and I even liked the Dawn remake. Diary ended up reminding me of why I loved zombie films in the first place though, it's far better than Land and a fitting addition to Romero's Living Dead franchise.

Whatever happend to baby Jane
The cinema was swamped by people my granparents ilk, before the movie started it sounded like I was in a swarm of birds with all their nattering.
It was pretty good to see at the cinema on a Saturday afternoon, but I was pineing a bit that Grindhouse was sold out.

(REC.)
A fine zombie movie, with plenty of frights, the sound was amazeing, added to it a lot.
They were filming the audience dureing the screening which was the U.K premiere which was cool with me except for the fact that the guy two seats down from me had requested to not be filmed (he looked like a pervert), so I doubt I will be in the promos.
Also the Directors were there, Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza who did a Q and A after the movie. Just a shame about the quality of questions.

oh no, i've seen it a million times. i just meant that it really never gets old. i was reminded of how awesome it is.
regarding "spaced," i've heard about it, and i've always wanted to see it. i found a bootleg of all the episodes once at a horror convention and almost bought them.
i wish i would have. i'll keep an eye out for it the next convention i go to.
is there any place online you can watch them, perhaps?
