Dance of the Dead

A few cheap laughs. Some comic violence. It barely kept my interest.

Man, it wasn't THAT bad... Sure, it's derivative, but I thought it was a pretty good teen zombie flick. Great comic timing. Cute. Ran long, but was overall fun.

...

Dude, that movie was so much fun! It's been done a thousand times, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Great. And now I'm agreeing with Posher. :p

Could be wrong, but I'd bet they're talking about the recent zombie flick of the same name:

as Halloween quickly approaches again, I've been watching more than my usual share of horror films (both old and new) and since the classics are my personal favorites I've been watching them more than most and I began to wonder what my fellow classic fright fans have been watching of late, so here's my list of the films I'm watching today, what are you watching?

1. Dracula (1931) w/ Lugosi
2. Son Of Dracula w/ lon Chaney jr
3 The Ghost Breakers w/ Bob Hope
4. Frankenstein meets The Wolf Man w/Chaney jr & Lugosi

Five Minutes Of Heaven (2009)

http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/3394/fiveminutesofheaven1.png

Set in Northern Ireland, the film is about how violence shatters lives, and whether 'revenge' can always find its way to cover up the loss & grief or how hate and regret can meet and be resolved. The story starts with Joe Griffen's meeting with Alistair Little through a TV docu program. 25 years ago, Little (Liam Neeson) murdered Griffen's brother for nothing more than being Catholic...he watched his brother murdered, and later blamed by his own mother for doing nothing to stop it (though he was only nine). Now he is eager to take his revenge as soon as he come face to face...he wants to have his five minutes of heaven.

Compelling movie, recommended.

A very good film that, although it contained time travel and was a prequel (which is pretty much a recipe for mass confusion and plot holes) I was very satisfied. In fact, they explained it all perfectly for me, meaning I didn't have to sit there working things out like I do with most time travel films, until I fully understood or came to my own conclusions to fill the plot holes. Some of the action sequences were okay and there was a romance in there that didn't fit at all. I especially liked the casting for Chekov and Bones. The trouble was, as good as the film may have been, the story didn't particularly grip me.

To call this a horror movie is not only an exaggeration. It's a lie.

Nevertheless I thought it was very, veeery good.
Surprisingly twisted and surreal, with pretty much all characters being weird in one way or another. And the fact that the director doesn't give any explanations, but let the viewer alone figure out and interpretate what the hell is going on is just awsome. Like the ending. WTF??!!

And last but not least.. Viggo Mortensen. Flawless performance.

La Notte (1961)

A film, as made clear through an encounter between a nymphomaniac and a married intellect, about control: what it is to have it, what it is to lose it. Antonioni isn't so much concerned with theses, but more with hypotheticals. He draws complexities without explanations, and this is the secret ingredient to his recipes; instead of searching for answers, he sketches ideas of human flaw and, most importantly, does not employ an eraser. The central characters- played delicately by Moreau and Mastroianni- begin together mechanically but not spiritually, and things get hazier from there. As the two leave the comforts of their small confines and enter a world with elements out of their control they begin an adventure of self-exploration and awakening. Monica Vitti, an Antonioni trademark of youth and beauty, comes between them not personally but symbolically; it isn't so much that this particular woman has created sexual insecurity and relational doubt between the couple but more that nothing stable holds them together. "Marriage" is a man-made state, and vows are made only of word. Somewhere beyond good intention lies a frightening world of temptation and doubt, and it can hide in the most subtle of places- the distress of a dying friend, a street fight, a party. A remarkable centerpiece in Antonioni's unofficial trilogy filled with an admirable uncertainty and a tremendous cast.

So I settled for this. Fun movie with some good effects but it left a lot of questions and many many plotholes. Still, as I said, it was fun. Very predictable. No better that the first one, not that I expected it to be.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)

Well, I can see why Tennessee Williams wasn't crazy about this one - there's no denying that it cuts/edits/alters some pretty major themes, ideas and passages - but barring comparisons to the original work, this is still a damn good film.

A great example of a near perfect ensemble cast...Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, Burl Ives, Judith Anderson are all equally fantastic, and even those with smaller parts like Jack Carson and Madeleine Sherwood still do a great job. I think the real standouts have to be Newman and Ives though...their scenes together are nothing short of electric.

If you happen to be a Williams purist, this might not be the best choice (though it does keep the plot and characters pretty much faithful), but otherwise this is nigh on to a masterpiece.

(Oh, and forgive me for a moment while I state the obvious: Elizabeth Taylor is one of the most gorgeous creatures ever to walk this earth)

Most definately, perfect casting.

Now I was reading into some other film versions of this...I guess Laurence Olivier produced a TV version of this in the 70's, and cast himself as Big Daddy. I'd be rather intrigued to see how that turned out...

Nosferatu: Phantom der nacht (1979)

It had been a while since I'd seen this, but wow. Truly a masterpiece in its own right. It's more of a reworking of Stoker's novel paying homage to Murnau than an actual remake of Murnau's original film. Herzog takes liberties with the narrative, but stylistically it's as if Murnau had had 1979 filmmaking technology and equipment back in the early 1920s. The composition, lighting, and makeup all feel so classic. It's an incredible meeting of old school and modern renaissance filmmaking. An exemplary entry into the horror movie canon, and a wonderful work of art, period.

Monks- the Transatlantic Feedback (2006)

Talking about the Monks with Elvis in the current album thread made me want to watch this again. The Monks were one of the absolute most influential groups to come out of the 1960s...and no one's ever heard of them. This long overdue story of the band is not just about the history of the Monks, but a wonderful look into the spirit of the 1960s; the culture, the state of mind. Anyone who gives a crap about music at all owes it to themselves and to this groundbreaking, wildly and surreptitiously influential (and as much as I hate the cliche "ahead of their time", they truly were) group to give this one a watch.

Yup, have to agree with mrbelle. Creepy looking youngsters.

One of the best horror movies i've seen in 2009.

The ending could have been a little longer tho, and the director should've spend more than the last minute of the movie explaining what was going on and why. Coz that was quite interesting.

Curiosity - what did you think of that one? Huge nostagia factor there for me - watched it on late night TV with my grandmother when I was like 6. Revisited it not long ago and it didn't quite live up to my memories...but I always like to hear other people's thoughts on it.

Back on topic: last night I decided to check out some of the special features on the Criterion disc of Brand Upon the Brain! - some really cool stuff. 97 Percent True is an hour long series of interviews with people involoved with the film. It mostly focuses on Maddin, thankfully, and the man is just as facinating as you would assume from his work. He seems more down to earth than you'd expect for such a surreal, over the top filmmaker, but it was still really interesting to hear him talk about some of his influences and ideas. The other interviewees were interesting as well, but not on par with Maddin.

Also watched the 2 short Maddin films on the disc: Footsteps and It's My Mother's Birthday Today. I've always been in awe of Foley artists, so Footsteps was obviously pretty amazing...It's My Mother's Birthday Today was pretty damn disturbing though. Beautiful in some ways, but still disturbing.

I think I'll have to re-watch Brand... tonight.

A kick-ass, violent crime drama/blaxploitation flick that delivers the goos in a major way. Yaphet Kotto, Anthony Quinn, Tony Fanciosca and the always entertaining Antonio Fargas all chew up the scenery and elevate this movie from typical to awesome. If you dig 70s crime drama you will absolutely love this film. None of the characters are one-dimensional, they all struggle with their own demons and no action is without consequnce.

The Escapist (2009)

http://l.yimg.com/eb/ymv/us/img/hv/photo/movie_pix/ifc_films/the_escapist/theescapist_smallposter.jpg

Frank Perry (Brian Cox) is a long term prisoner in a London jail where the guards look the other way and one would be wise to avoid the attentions of Rizzo (Damian Lewis), the boss inmate and his unhinged junkie brother Tony (Steven Mackintosh). Perry receives the first letter from his family in fourteen years. His daughter is a heroin addict and close to death. Perry decides he must get out, to see her and make things right while there is still time. He goes to his closest friend Brodie (Liam Cunningham) and they enlist on-the-edge pugilist and thief Lenny Drake (Joseph Fiennes) to put together their plan.

A slow burn but intense British prison break movie with good casts. Though it's not only delivers the 'prison break' suspenseful content, you'll find something more at the end. Recommended.

L'Interieur (Inside) - Very well done. Somewhat spoilerish: I was almost surprised that there was no twist to the end. No supernatural nastiness with the baby. My second viewing of this masterpiece...this time I watched it with the Crispin Glover narration track. He puts a whole different twist on things - I think I prefer the Rossellini track, but I'm very glad I tried something different this time around, and I look forward to listening to the other tracks in the future (Eli Wallach especially intrigues me).

As far as the film itself - no one alive today can make a film like Guy Maddin. A genre (and gender) bending rumination of childhood, an ode to silent film, and a love letter to the surreal...a stunning film in every sense of the word.

Fortunato has recommended this one endlessly around here...I'm infinitely glad I listened to him in the first place, and further I want to strongly second his recommendation in hopes that everyone who considers themselves a fan of the art of cinema take it upon themselves to watch this modern work of genius.

Its a decent, effective effort at the concept of time-travel. The core idea has been copied from Back to the Future but I understood a lot of the explanations given to time paradoxes this time around than I did on my first viewing of this (needless to say I was confused as heck the first time). Can be confusing and has its flaws, but its still a pretty entertaining flick with some rather nice effects.

Yes! Absolutely.

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

So, yes. This is a return to form for Raimi and Raimi. But more than that, it's a breath of fresh air for horror fans. Goofy, creepy, and purely entertaining. This is a film made by a man who still has a giddy, childlike love for horror burning within him. Allison Lohman is wonderful in her starring role, taking every beatdown, delivering Ash-esque one-liners with ease, and generally inspiring pity for her supernatural situation. There are angry shadows, unseen forces, dead bodies, jump scares, action thrills, etc. and lots of laughs. What's more, it's a kind of outrageous (yet totally appropriate) cautionary tale for these hard economic times. This is what we need more of. So horror fans unite! Go see it at the theatre. This is not one you're going to want to wait for the DVD to see.

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

3.5 / 5

Raimi's return to the horror genre is lots of fun and packs a few good scares in, but it's also conventional and light, like a ride in Disney's Haunted Mansion. I had a good time watching the film but it never really took me out of my comfort zone or affected me deeper than on a surface level the way a good horror movie should. If there's one thing Raimi is particularly good at it's mixing shlock humor with the grotesque, and there are a number of wonderfully executed scenes here where insects are vomited, eyes are gouged and goats go wild. Also impressive is his handling of a new breed of effects; once a master of low-budget, homemade effects, Raimi effortlessly handles CGI, a difficult tool to use effectively, especially in horror. Lohman is cute, Long is right for the part, and the ending is brilliant. It's not a genre revelation but it is a thrilling movie.

Great movie. It's a slow burn, but a compelling and tense drama, that builds up to one hell of an ending. Bruno Lawrence steals the show as the father struggling in the aftermath of his wife and daughter leaving him; he delivers a nuanced and tortured performance and was really the highlight of the film.

Not what I was expecting after Sleeping Dogs, but still a really well made thriller. Worth a look for sure.

Way better than the Wolverine half of this double feature. The action is better, it has somewhat of a developed plot, and I daresay the animation is even a little stronger.

A lot can be said for going into a movie blind. I'd not heard one single thing about this movie for better or for worse, but I grabbed it awhile back in a bargain bin and now that I've watched it, I'm glad I did.

This is a movie about apathy, about celebrity culture, about all the flaws of our society. It is an angry, angry movie lashing out at everything wrong with us today. It's a movie with a message, and even though I don't personally agree with everything it had to say, it made it's case pretty damn strong.

By the way - I have a new found appreciation for Stephen Dorff after watching this. Great performance.

Forbidden Planet (1956)

If I may be so bold, this is probably my favorite science-fiction film from the 1950s, a decade which produced some of the most awe-inspiring space pictures of all time. It's entertaining in a silly, almost campy way, providing lots of gizmo-gazmo talk and outrageous sexual innuendos; but in an almost unthinkable opposition the film then turns its plot into a Freudian driven psychological thriller, a story meant to cater to the thinker, not just the thrill-seeker. This daring combination pays off, and while it is a joy to absorb the film's more nostalgic escapist pleasures (glorious Cinemascope, beautiful space color palette, Robby the Robot) it is also exciting to watch such an audacious plot unravel, one that was loosely adapted from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. The cast is pitch-perfect; the young Earth crew is lead by Leslie Nielsen, and Walter Pidgeon is the planet-marooned genious who seems quite upset when the former arrives, satisfied to occupy the forbidden planet alone. Worlds collide as the two begin to take different kinds of interests in Pidgeon's daughter, played by Anne Francis. Added to the film are miraculous special effects which seamlessly blend animation and film, arming director Wilcox with an arsenal of magic allowing anything imagined to be created for the screen. The movie is a rare achievement, a science-fiction film whose bright ideas are ageless and whose antique visuals become finer through the years.

War Of The Worlds (1952)

Awful dialogue haha and it seemed dumbed down from the little I remember of the record I used to listen to as kid. The heavy handed religious themes kinda ruined it for me by the end. Still... an enjoyable enough distraction for the afternoon but I wouldn't rate it as highly as a lot of people seem to.

Id go so far to say its one of the finest examples of Sci Fi from any decade, everything about it stunning. This is one of those films which really is a 100% absolutely must see.

Very intense. I've watched it twice already and each time I interpret it in a whole different way. Isabelle Huppert is amazingly constricted and repressed down to her very toes... incredible performance.

That last scene I watched over and over. The expression on her face gives me chills.

I didn't have any expectations, all I knew was a few people here had dug it recently. It was really good, mixing pycho and brutal horror elements with a bit of comedy at times. One of the best new horrors I have seen for a while.

49th Parellel (1941)

Actually, the only real flaw in the film are the tangled and inconsistent accents, particularly Olivier's French over-execution. This is a wonderful picture full of humor and horror, and there are so many surprises, twists and turns that the ending comes far too soon- this is the kind of vivid story which could go on pleasantly forever. Of course we have Michael Powell to thank for that, a director's director who knows where to find life in his frame. He captures his actors at their most vulnerable, finds drama in the most unthinkable places, and all the while he steadies his story so that the jokes all crack nicely and the tragedies knock you flat. This expert control feels on celluloid something like a pulse, pumping all the rights things into every available space and leaving no shot a waste. An ensemble cast features many good performances and a few great ones, notably Leslie Howard's full-blooded turn as a chatty art-wise Canadian who gets picked on by a couple of Nazis for loose lips, but then pursues his chance to get even. A very funny, often angry and always riveting war-time film which is sure to have a little something for everyone.

Directed By John Ford (1971/2006)

Now, let me start with an admission that I'm sure will get me attacked by some of the cinephiles around here: I've never actually seen any of John Ford's films :o . That said, I ran across the start of this documentary last night on TCM, and figured why not give it a look.

Really entertaining and informative documentary. Lots of great interviews with some of Hollywood's finest: John Wayne, James Stewart, Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and more. Great insight into a film icon and, even though I can't really call myself a fan because I haven't seen any of his stuff, I found myself fascinated by this portrait of a great artist.

Now, I just need to track down some of his films...

...I'm sorry:o

I figured you'd be the first to jump on that one. I really can't say why I've never got into his work...just never ran across much of it around here, I guess. But after watching this documentary, I realize just what I've been missing, and I need to rectify the situation ASAP.

I tried to watch The Fugitive (1947) last night - TCM was showing it directly after the documentary - but by that point it was almost 1 a.m. and I just couldn't keep my eyes open. Don't worry though...I'll be getting some of his stuff as soon as I possibly can.

EDIT - Just noticed that I forgot to post a flick I watched a couple days ago...should get a little bit back into your good books Alky.

Modern Times (1936)

Another shameful admission: this was my first exposure to Chaplin :o. No, I had never seen a Charlie Chaplin picture before...but after taking in this masterpiece, I have to see more.

I loved every second of it...brilliant sight gags, great story telling, just all-around perfect entertainment. Chaplin just about blew me away, what an amazing performer. He doesn't just steal the show, he literally takes control of every single frame he's in. Absolutely spectacular.

Ah, excellent! Now, in this order, watch The Gold Rush and then City Lights. It'll be like an orgasmic Chaplin climax.

But be warned: make sure, make EXTRA SURE that the version of The Gold Rush you watch is the original silent version released in 1925. In the forties he released a re-cut version featuring a voice-over narration, and it is much less enjoyable; for some reason, this version seems to be the more prominant film seen by casual viewers these days, which is a damn shame. The Warner 2-disc DVD has both features on it.

And City Lights...well, it's one of the most indescribable movie experiences of all time.

And Elvis- you should follow suit, buddy!

In the Mouth of Madness

I had the pleasure of seeing this for the first time (it's the summer and I can finally catch up on some good horror movies and not the crap that I end up watching on the sci-fi channel on the weekends (don't have netflix at school)).

anyway i must say that i absolutely loved it! it was really nice to see some creepy scenes that didn't rely on CG. that's what i love about the older style that everything is the in the real plane and thus it makes it more believable (if done right that is). it was good night and i think i completely creeped out my dad on my movie choice...

just wait til next time...i've rented battle royale :D

EDIT:
just forgot, i recently saw My Bloody Valentine

now i am a fan of crappy horror movies (am sure a number of people can share my guilt in this) and jumped on the fact that it had Jensen Ackles in it (i am a die-hard supernatural fan). he was about the only good thing in this movie aside from the almost laughable kills (i did wish i saw it in theaters with the 3-D as i am sure it was really cool). i think the gore would have more of an impact if the actors showed a little more horror at the sudden slaughter of their fellow townsmen. i mean come ON, the first scene in hospital and all the police can say are 'wow. it looks like ....'

anyway, that was my little rant about it. on a more positively side i think that the pace was interesting and i did like the end.

I was just so excited to have had that much fun going to see a horror movie in the theatre. Usually I just leave disappointed and upset at losing $10.

Like I said, he's already reinvented the genre, and I wouldn't expect him to do it again. It was just great and refreshing to have an old horror master doing what he does best on the big screen again, especially among the slew of forgettable garbage.

The Champ (1931)

It takes tough skin to get out of this film without a few bruises and a bad black eye. Vidor was a man on the move, a director who believed firmly in a literal execution of the motion picture, and his camera movements flow so naturally that they disappear. Wallace Beery rightfully earned an Oscar for his title performance in 1931, but it means nothing without Jackie Cooper's raw symmetry; here is a child actor with a head on his shoulders, a person who understands his part and makes it real, and his success makes him look more mature than almost every adult actor in the film- many of whom are, ironically, childishly theatrical. This film is surprisingly rarely cited; its influence has been echoing between the walls of American cinema for seventy-eight years, and it quite obviously made an impression on Martin Scorsese, a director who would borrow thematically and stylistically from it in 1980. A knockout.

It's been a LONG time since I've posted movie reviews in this thread, so I figure I should catch up.

For the most part I've seen a lot of BAD and DISAPPOINTING movies, but there were a couple of good ones in there too...

The highlights (of the good and bad I've seen recently):

Synecdoche, New York (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383028/)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/synecdoche_new_york_poster.jpg

When I like Charlie Kaufman, I LOVE Charlie Kaufman. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is in my top 5 movies of all time. It's visionary, brilliant, clever, and honestly touching. Adaptation is another favorite of mine, one that goes into the mind of the obsessed writer and drags the audience along with it. Being John Malkovich was one of the first movies to introduce me to absurd intellectual cinema.

However.

When I DON'T like Kaufman, I find him absolutely miserable. The first movie to introduce me to this phenomenon was Human Nature, a strange meandering self-indulgent flick with unlikable characters following ambiguous motives. This was the first movie to convince me that perhaps the unfettered Kaufman is not exactly a good thing.

And then I saw Synecdoche New York. I was looking forward to this film. Quit a bit, actually. The last Kaufman film that I had seen was the aforementioned Human Nature and I was looking forward to something that would be reminiscent of his whimsical earlier works. And with the brilliant cast (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Michelle Williams, Hope Davis, Emily Watson, Dianne Wiest) I thought that this MUST be great!

Boy, was I wrong. What started out as a slice-of-life struggling drama with compelling characters slowly disintegrated into a meandering theater metaphor for the predestined, bleak human condition. Laden with swollen symbolism and muted overtones, Synechdoche was nothing but pretentious, long, painful, and self-indulgent. I want that time back.

I would LOVE for those who liked this film to chime in (Fortunato - I AM CALLING YOU OUT) because I simply do not understand how this miserable showing could be palatable.

1/5 - Points for good performances and some decent direction and imagery. But overall turgid and disappointing.

...

Tideland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0410764/)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/tideland.jpg

Good GOD how long I waited for a Gilliam production to resurrect my favorite director in my eyes after the Brothers Grimm debacle... But this was not that film.

Gilliam is a favorite director of mine. With the exception of the occasional lemon (*cough* Jabberwocky), his films are pure cinematic brilliance. Imaginative, whimsical, visionary, funny- from fractured children's fairy tales (Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Time Bandits) to well-done scifi (Brazil and 12 Monkeys) to British humor (Monty Python!), he has always been a successful director in my eyes.

Which is why Tideland was a particular blow to my senses.

The movie opens with Gilliam appealing to the audience, explaining that this movie was an exploration into the inner child and that he discovered that his inner child is a little girl. Charming, no?

Well, not so much so when the story unravels to this little girl's world of neglectful junkie parents, filling heroin needles for her father, disconnect between life and death, and a pedophilic relationship with a retarded farm boy - THIS is Gilliam's inner child?!?!

Gilliam took the story from Mitch Cullin's book of the same name, framing the adaptation with nods to Psycho and Alice and Wonderland. The parallels are interesting, but ultimately it is unclear to my what appealed to Gilliam about this wretched little tale. I had a really difficult time trying to figure out why - WHY he would do a miserable movie such as this and the only answer I can come up with is that this is Gilliam's true opus. And Gilliam is a disturbed, disturbed man.

This movie is painful to watch. Painful. And not in a good way.

1/5 - Extra points because it's undeniable that he IS a skilled director. This movie was beautiful. Truly gorgeous... But the subject matter, plot, story, characters... was just not enjoyable to watch.*

*I have to note that I don't generally write off movies that are "not enjoyable to watch." Visitor Q is a perfect example of a film that revels in the discomfort of the audience but I think is a brilliant piece of groundbreaking cinema... I draw a line between the two because there ARE movies that can turn discomfort and bleakness into beauty... With Tideland there is just bleakness and miseryy.

King of California (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388182/)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/koc1shtfeat.jpg

Best movie I've seen in a looooooooong time. I just spent my last post railing against Gilliam's worst film to date. Well, King of California reminded me a lot of one of his classics, The Fisher King. King of California follows the storyline of teen Miranda (played by Evan Rachel Wood, who is becoming one of my absolute favorite up-and-coming actresses) whose schizophrenic dad (played by an artful and almost unrecognizable Michael Douglas) enters her life again, convinced that Spanish gold is buried under California. The two of them embark on a journey in search for this gold and the question becomes (must like Fisher King), what is real and what is in her father's mind.

King of California is whimsical, inventive, and absolutely charming. Michael Douglas as the schizophrenic father is frenetic, obsessive, and right on point in this role (surprising to me as I don't necessarily look at him as a skilled thespian). Great story, fantastic writing, brilliant acting, and gorgeous direction. Definitely touchy/feely, but a great little film. LOVED it.

5/5

The new f13.
Wasn't bad...I liked the "underground lair" bit, and that the character wasn't just a walking machete the whole time...but yeah, wasn't scary, didn't do much for me really.

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Second half of one of the greatest action movies of the modern day.

I find this half has the better script...you really get to dig deeper into the characters and their history, and - as always - Tarantino gives us some fantastic dialogue. Plus we get to legitimately meet Bill, who is nothing less than the definition of badass and one of my favourite screen villains.

R.I.P. David Carradine

Out for Justice (1991)

It's trash, of course...but entertaining trash. Seagal is at the top of his game here...not that it means much, but if nothing else his movies can usually serve for an action fix. The pool hall scene is pretty much a B-movie masterpiece.

Not sure how I feel about it. I hated about half of the movie.
///SPOILER ALERT///
I hated that the girl had about 3 chances to get away from the guys and fucked it up every time. AND when she made it back to the house she took her jolly old time reaching for the phone...Is she retarded? She should have went straight upstairs to the gun. But NOOO she gets raped yet again and got her ass beat. Okay well on top of all of this, after she got rapped by 4 men, she takes A FUCKING SHOWER! wtf..All of the evidence is gone. Then, she doesn't leave! She stays there for the rest of summer? WTF??! I mean I'm glad she ended up killing everybody but she actually had sex with the one retarded guy before she killed him... Why didn't she just shoot all of them in the head and be done with it? Idk this movie pissed me off a lot.

"Inside" 8/10

Without a doubt in my mind the most disgusting movie i've ever seen.

Felt like the gory violence was not only right in my face, but also forced down my throat.

It was really a yuck experience, but in a good way.

And I see Betty Blue has gotten a tad more insane. :D

"The signal" 8/10

* Contains spoilers*

My only tiny "problem" with this one is the scene where Lewis (AJ Bowen was awsome) gets his head smashed in. You actually see half his head disappear. But next time you see him lying on the floor his head is back to normal. A little later he gets up and continues the hunt, looking pretty normal in the face. Maybe the director just thought the head smashing scene was too awsome to cut out or maybe he realized afterwards that the character Lewis Denton was the highlight of the movie. Coz he was. :)

Up (2009)

What a wonderful film! Another work of art from Pixar (AKA the studio that currently can do no wrong), and even though it isn't quite as stunning as WALL·E it's still easily among their best work. It manages to be incredibly touching without being too saccharine, and delivers a truly thrilling adventure with a great cast of characters, brilliant visuals and lots of laughs. "Kevin" had me in stitches...that bird stole the show for me.

Fans of adventure and/or animation in general: consider this a must-see.

First off, it had a shit loads of different monsters. That was its biggest plus.

And then there was the humor that worked really well, like the face slapping and Hellboy getting his ass kicked by the lockers. Funny fucking shit.

To be honest, despite several attepts i've never made it all the way through the first one.

Eden Lake. Starts out pretty slow, then slowly builds up a painful head of steam until the brutal, bitter end. Great flick that is a tad difficult to watch.

Serenity. Fun spaceship action flick. Good story, great action (spaceship and hand to hand stuff), nice sheilas to look at (but with a PG-13 not much of their clothes come off). Enjoyable none-the-less. Ashe.

Friday the 13th (remake) - 2/10

Pretty much pure garbage. I'm not against some remakes either. I actually liked the TCM and Halloween remakes. (Blasphemy around here I know, but whatever.) But this? Terrible. Abercrombie douchebags who I couldn't care less about getting killed? *yawn* Cardboard cutouts could act better than these people. Boring and uninspiring deaths abound. See that electric bug zapper that is featured predominantly in two shots? Yeah we're not going to kill anyone with that. Let's just use a machete. Again. Jason becomes a human-sized gopher building tunnels under the camp which he then fills with odd bits of junk? Yeah. Ok. Sure. I'm right with ya on that. Not.

Star Trek (remake) - 10/10

I'm not a huge Star Trek fan. I used to be into it a little bit as a kid. I used to like Next Gen for a season or two, but it just go boring and predictable. But the reboot is pretty amazing. I could have done without the whole time travel plot mechanic, but otherwise, awesome movie. I especially loved the look of the movie. I had my reservations about the light flares from what I had read online. They in fact make the movie what it is. I think that without the light flares, the movie would have looked like any other sci-fi movie out there.

Agreed! I thought that the second one was just pure fun to watch - the landscape and alternate world of beasties was so much fun and inspired! I had a blast with this one.

"Eden lake" 4/10

Good cast, but I hate these kind of horror movies..

I wasn't a huge fan of this one, either. My biggest issue is that I feel as though our two victims could have escaped their fate pretty much at any time within the first 20 minutes and when they didn't, I just didn't pity their torment. I really hate movies when the victims have truly brought the torture onto themselves.

I haven't seen Eden Lake so I can't comment on it specifically, but I don't mind movies where it's all about the bad guys or the monster. I liked Devil's Rejects- didn't love it, because I thought it needed more plot development- but I didn't mind that it was all focused on the bad guys.

But that's poetic justice!

I find it irritating after a certain point...

"DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE! DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE! DON'T GO IN TH - ... Oh, FINE. DIE."

And, yes, I realize that the classing "Don't go into the -" is a pivotal theme in a lot of horror movies; I just get tired of it when our heroes are in situations that they put themselves into (especially in the case of Eden Lake when they KNEW there was danger involved in going back).

Oh yea, they reeeally deserved what was coming to them.

I agree with you on that one, too. To me, Funny Games was even worse because of the complete and utter victimization. I understand that's the point of the film, but it just makes me feel... icky. I had to turn The Devils Rejects off because I couldn't deal with the cruelty. :o

Scarecrow (1973)

Scarecrow is a phenomenal film. It boasts fantastic performances by Al Pacino and Gene Hackman (who are both at the top of their game), wonderful direction (most notably in director Jerry Schatzberg's use of long takes which fits this film perfectly) and brilliant writing with deep, complex and most importantly 'real' characters.

Hackman plays Max, a recently released convict who dreams of moving to Pittsburgh to open his own car wash. Pacino plays Francis an ex-sailor who plans on going to Detroit to meet his child for the first time. The two become friends and bond while hitchhiking and in a manner similar to 'Midnight Cowboy' their odd realationship begins.

The one and only complaint I have about Scarecrow is, sometimes the scenese were cut short a bit early. One scene in particular (I won't reveal as it is a major spoiler) could have had so much more emotional resonance had the director let it go on a tad bit longer.
