In Colombia, a woman and her family became the victim of an unusual act of terrorism. Unable to pay a ransom, the mother is turned into a human time bomb and is now trapped in a physical and mental circumstance from which she and her family try to break free.

A gripping thriller told in real time, the most fascinating part is that its full 85-minute running time is one continuous shot, with no cuts and no editing but a shocking ending. Highly Recommended.

y the numbers but very entertaining Martial Arts/Action flick starring (well sort of) aging veterans of the genre JCVD (who looks to be wearing too much make up) and Dolph Lungren...After the intial Universal Soldier film they did a bunch of forgettable sequals which this film tops in every way...MMA fighter Mike Kyle is suprisingly good in a major role as is fellow fighter Andrei Arlovski (in an Arnie Terminator sorta way)..

You can really see the influence that mixed martial arts has had on the genre by no only using the fighters as actors but also incorporating the mma style of combat - there are Thai influenced strikes as well as ground movies like triangles and armbars..

If, like me, you're as thick as shit and enjoy grown men beating shit out of each other then you might enjoy this....I can't help but like VanDamme to this day unlike the aging Segal who i seem to despise in direct proportion of his ever growing waist..Dolph on the otherhand was very underused in this film but on the plus side there is NO ROMANCE AT ALL...

I saw that at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), and Hayao Miyazaki was there and gave a speech in Japanese while a translator translated everything he said into English. The only thing I didn't like about the movie that it wasn't in the original Japanese with English subs, it was English dubbed.

The Punisher (2004). This was a fun, though dark, comic book-based revenge flick that has no pretense of its place in life. Once it gets going, it is a hard-hitting, over the top action flick with some humor and even some sense of randomness thrown in (the guitar scene was sublime). The acting was fine, the direction was competent. The action scenes were awesome. While the story may have been a little flimsy, it was consistently so, and either way, being based on a comic book such things are pardonable. Overall it was an outstanding fun dick flick. Ashe.

Alright, I was too tired to give this thing its proper review last night.

Shutter Island (2010) - 4.5/5

Come one, come all- let a real filmmaker get inside your brain and tamper around, because the experience is exhilerating. There is no McGuffin twist here, no cheap shots- what you see is what you get, but when everything is said and done you will need to experience it all over again. The best part of the movie is Scorsese's decision to take this film back to it's genre roots. The story was already set in the 1950s, but Marty uses Lewton scare tactics, a Hitchcockian camera and Clouzot's slow-burn technique to bring us an experience we simply never have today. An island is as perfect a location as any for this filmmaker's careful touch, and what starts in mystery ends that way; it's set somewhere off of Massachusetts, but this place might as well be on another planet. Robbie Robertson has organized and created one of his best scores to date, a thrilling music accompaniment that jives perfectly with Scorsese's images. Most impressive, though, is the cast- all of whom deliver jaw-dropping performances. Kingsley is mysterious and Max von Sydow is a welcome blast from the past. The real treasure, as always, is DiCaprio, an actor of tremedous power, who gives one of his most sensational performances here and whose ability literally allows the movie to work.

F.I.S.T. (1978)

F.I.S.T. is one of the few films out there that illustrate Sly Stallone's great acting talents. Stallone really brings his character, Johnny Kovak, to life and gives one of his most memorable performances. This film shows that, having gone a different route, Stallone could have become a much better actor. After this film, Stallone had a few other good films but the majority were crumby sequels, cliche action films, and poor attempts at comedy. It's really a shame he didn't put his talents to better use like he did in his earlier work like Rocky, and Nighthawks.

The film begins in the Great Depression of the 30's and follows the life of Johnny Kovak, a labourer who works at unloading trucks. Who, with his coworkers after being severly mistreated, and underpaid fights back against the company. This leads to Kovak becoming a member of the Union F.I.S.T, the Federation of Innner-State Truckers. At first idealistic, Kovak's morals and values are challenged when he has to get organized crime groups involved to get what's fair.

My only complaint with the film is, in the later scenes were Stallone plays an older Kovak, his portrayl is a bit weak given his limited acting abilities at the time. This, however is only a minor complaint, he still gives a great performance.

The script is good, all the characters are realistic and well fleshed out,and the great director, Norman Jewison puts his talents to good use in F.I.S.T. Also, filled with a fantastic supporting cast (including, Peter Boyle, and Rod Steiger) all these elements come together to make F.I.S.T. a film that is definetly worth seeing.

-7.5/10.

Shutter Island (2010)

Wanted to give this a proper review myself:

A hulking, brooding monster of anxious filmmaking, all wild storms and unsettling scowls and crooked angles; a hand-woven tapestry of flashbacks, hallucinations, corrupted memories, and unreliable reality. DiCaprio's protagonist Teddy is a faulty flashlight in the dark, labyrinthine mess of Shutter Island.
There have been notices of influences like Fuller, Hitchcock, Kubrick, and while I think all of these are present, make no mistake that this is a Scorsese film. A singular work, no doubt, but Scorsese for sure. Playing almost giddily with twists and cliched devices, no matter when you think you have all the pieces put together, he makes this picture not about the final result, but about getting there. It's about the journey to the end. And he builds the tension, and holds us in captivity, until he releases it like a pressure cooker and the credits ooze onscreen. And I have to say, the final few minutes of this film, and the questions presented there, just knocked me flat.

Fabulous acting, cinematography, set design, everything really. A maddening, wonderful cohesive picture.

The Children (2008). This wonderfully creepy flick begins innocently enough, but then an ineffable atmosphere of doom slowly creeps in to dominate everything. Even worse, kids and adults alike act and react in a surprisingly realistic fashion. The foreboding sense of doom just keeps building and building until it is too late; the worst imaginable possibility has become a reality. Great acting, wickedly superb camera work, and some confident direction makes this a delightfully awful treat. Mercie beaucoup.

Love absolutely everything else though. Especially the way they make everything look like the 1940's; film noir style, art deco everything. Yet it's also quite futuristic. Is there a word for/genre of making the past look like the future. If so I want more.

Brazil-

This time with my bf, and also sober. What. A. Mindfuck. I hate those stupid baby face masks so very much.

Love absolutely everything else though. Especially the way they make everything look like the 1940's; film noir style, art deco everything. Yet it's also quite futuristic. Is there a word for/genre of making the past look like the future. If so I want more.

Great movie. 4/5 for being a bit long.

I think it's more making the future look like dirty and imperfect. Dystopian would be the most appropriate word I believe, unless somebody else has something better. While that really doesn't refer to the visuals, a lot of times that ugly or imperfect looking future is a result of a dystopia. A far cry from the visions of the future you get in things like Star Trek where everything is so clean and pretty. Not quite a steampunk future either...

Blade Runner is another good example of such a world IMO.

I LOVE Brazil.

Nail Gun Massacre

A rather odd b grade flick, with some terrible scripting but it had some charm.

5/10

Near Dark

My fist time watching this, and man was I dissapointed, it faiked me big time.... The Pax got a pass but otherwise I didn't buy it. O.K so it was probably just the one aspect that ruined it for me, maybe I'm overacting. But you can't expect me to believe that....

7/10

Phsyco cop

This was another b grade flick where the script let it down, to many cringe worthy one liners from the bad guy to handle. And he seemed to be even quicker than jason, they could have caught a plane to another country and he would have been waiting for them at the luggage pick up. It was fun though, nut a real lack of nudity for a pick of this time and quality.

6/10

Cabin fever 2

I like it a lot. It had this odd vibe running through it. Overall it was a reasonable black comedy. I'd definatley like to see a 3rd instalment focussing on Winston. Giuseppe Andrews probably was the overall saviour of this flick in the end.

7/10

The Wolfman

I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually a really enjoyable movie. I saw the origanal a long time ago, but I remember it dragging a bit, I think there was a lot more of a love story being told, which I'm glad was not the case here. It was just brutal werewolf destruction of the English, awesome fun. Pretty much non-stop as well.

Quite enjoyed it. Eva Mendes plays a tv exec whos trying to get a reality show based on the game russian roulette on air. Its set up as a documentary crew following her every move as she goes thru the process of convincing network chiefs and such. The reality show itself, seen at the end, is actually quite tense and believable (maybe its only a matter of time?!!). Dont go out your way to see this but its certainly worth a look as a decent time filler.

Crazy Heart (2009)

A compelling character drama that becomes extraordinary in the hands of Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal. These could arguably be called the two performances of the year, hard roles which fluxuate from exhibiting great human joy to great human pain. I found myself fully engaged in this country star and his culture, something that hasn't been attempted since Altman succeeded in the 70s; Walter tackles the subject of this music scene and alcoholism, and they way they often go together, but he's careful to show the warm and gentle attributes of the culture as well. This contains the year's best music, songs (some sung by Bridges) that are actually far better than the genre ordinarily produces. One of the best (and most overlooked) pictures of 2009.

Saw The Wolfman this afternoon. It's a remake but was very well done. It didn't have the oomph of the original, but the first time is always the best, right? ;)
It was still worth the trip. I like the actors they chose, but the Harry Potter countryside was a little redundant.
Would I go see it again? Oh, yeah. Wonderful gore!
It will be part of my library when it comes out on plastic.

FINALLY got around to seeing American Zombie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765430/) and I thought that it was great. I would say that it's probably more "dark comedy" than actual "horror," but I thought that it was a blast. I was wary about a mockumentary at first, but ultimately I think it's a good addition to the Zombie genre and a must-see for all zombie fans. Definitely more low-key than the usual zombie fare, but it works. Highly recommended.

For a Few Dollars More (1965). Another outstanding entry from director Sergio Leone, this second in the the trilogy might just be the best, but who's counting. This time we get three incredible characters: no name, Mortimer, and Indio. Besides the witty story, these guys get some pretty fun parts to play, and Indio's tortured soul almost steals the show. Almost. With that inimitable score and wonderful camera work, this classic flick is tops in the classic spaghetti western genre. Mercie beaucoup.

Cool...my all-time favorite western. (yes I actually rank FAFDM above TGTB&TU and OUATITW, even AFOD for that matter)

This actually laid out the basic premise for Hollywood westerns to come. Its huge emphasis on Kurosawa aside, Leone had everything else pictured perfect - a gang of ruthless killers, a maniacal leader, a revenge angle, and above all Eastwood in his flawless stride. The expressions by Kinski (the hunchback) when Van Cleef strikes a match on his hunch, is absolutely awesome! Not to mention the very strong performances from both Van Cleef and Gian Maria Volonte, combined with the kickass opening sequence and soundtracks and the breathtaking cinematography only Leone can pull off.

The best western ever made, in my book.

Well crafted, well acted, wonderfully art directed and lensed, but still a bit empty. The "big twist" is evident in the first ten minutes, which is the fatal flaw of this type of film. That said, Marty made a solid b-movie with an excellently dark ending.

I didn't expect this to be nearly as good as the orignal cheese and gunfest - so we these lowere expectations I did enjoy...The boys are back in town (after a brief holiday in the Emerald Isle) - well at least one is as I supect Conor is now played by a stunt man wearing a Sean Patrick Flanery mask. Its a little sillier and goofier than the original and sorely lacks a return of William Defoes fruity detective. Instead they give us Dexter's wife who trys her hardest to follow in his high heel footsteps..

Watch without prejudice and you'll have the craic for 100 or som mins..

The Wicker Man (1973). This cult classic has to be one of the most wonderful movies ever made. i hate movies with singing, but somehow this would have been incomplete, empty almost, without the presence of such wonderful song. There is much to appreciate here, like lots of nudity, but again the nudity is not gratuitous by any account. The story itself is foreboding though wrapped in an insidiously innocent package. The acting was awesome, with the regal Christopher Lee almost stealing the show and with Edward Woodward's pious and self-righteous performance being top notch. Somehow, Edward's character elicits empathy despite his parochial piety. All in all, this low-budget thriller deserves to be ranked as one of the best horror flicks to bless the silver screen. Mercie beaucoup.

An involving and wonderfully crafted character study posing as a police proceedural. I really dug it, but it isn't for anyone who requires high-octane thrills. The film is complex in its simplicity. http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/custom/53/10009153.jpg http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/custom/62/10010062.jpg

Both the film is about the life & controversy about Elizabeth Bathory, who was a countess from the renowned Bathory family. She is considered the most famous serial killer in Slovak and Hungarian history as well as the world's most prolific mass murderer (according to Guinness World Records) and remembered as the "Blood Countess" and as the "Bloody Lady of Cachtice".
2008 Slovakian film based on a view opposed by others that Elizabeth Bathory was a victim of a conspiracy where the proceedings were largely politically motivated. However, the conspiracy theory is consistent with Hungarian history at that time.

Both the film watchable for good costume & set designs. Other than that some weak dialogs & unnecessary comic additions somewhat damaged the overall tone for both the story.

Sexy Beast (2000). Let me just say the obvious: Ben Kingsley. That performance was bar none one of the most powerful ever. That he should be feared by everyone and every thing just oozes out of character. The violence which emanated out of his body at times was superb. And while he steals the show, the rest of our characters are no slouches. Ray Winstone portrayed the counterpoint to Kingsley perfectly, doing his part to keep his demons in check, literally. That "gal" used to run with these psychopaths hints to the viewer that he might not have always been such a pussy cat. Ian McShane should also get some love here, for his subdued portrayal is of a sociopath yet to be provoked, but the growling bear that might emerge could threaten to make even Kingsley's character cower. Oh yeah, the story itself was strong, the direction more than competent. Even the symbolism was sublime. Mercie beaucoup.

Pretty sickening, bizarre Greek film. Still can't decide whether I liked this or not, whether director Nikolaidis was out for mere shock value or something more, and so found myself bored from time to time. Upon watching, it plays out as a serious of hollow, disgusting set pieces; sexual depravity, violence, insanity, and a muddled mess of a story. However, the film is incredibly well-shot and directed, looking like some twisted, forgotten piece of 40s noir. I might give it some time and watch it again, and hope it speaks to me more than it did on first viewing.

Wow, this was messed up aussie movie, just full on crazy. It makes me feel like giving up drinking for a while, it was just a very harsh look at alcoholism. Donald Pleasance was awesome in his role, he was such a great performer.

9/10

Last Ride

As a movie it is a little slow, though the story is quite dark. The direction was a little simple though which let it down and avoided having any long term impact on the viewer.

Saw V

Having previously only lasted through 1, 2 and half of 3 I didnt hold any hopes for a good film. The fact that big chunks of the movie were flashbacks to previous films meant that even if I hadnt seen anything before it was stupidly easy to get the point. Acting was shoddy at best but I suppose the look of the film was quite good. I may waste my time with Saw VI at some point but theres no rush.

Trailer Park of Terror (2008) TPOT gets a lot of bad love in the ratings, so i am here to set the record straight. For a low budget rock n' roll dark comedy horror flick, you cannot go wrong. The sinister Southern rock splendidly spices this playful flick up. The camera work was awesome, making what would have been prosaic necessities pleasant to the eye. The monsters, both before and after "the ordeal," were just redneck awful in all the right ways. It was not really a scary flick, but one scene in particular was just downright mean. Lots have complained about the ending. Whatever. This was no Sixth Sense, and so i thought the ending was fine. Though Nichole Hiltz's character was too hot to be a trailer park queen, even the hottest of queens can be stuck in the quagmire of the park. Grazie.

Seven Pounds

This is a good film but nowhere as good as it could've been. Will Smith does a decent job playing the man who wants to make amends for a past mistake. He goes about making life better for seven people but only those who he sees as truly deserving. The big problem is the film spends about 90 minutes of it 2 hour run time devoted to the story of a young woman with a heart condition and the rest dont get much of a look in. I would've loved to see more of Woody Harrelsons blind piano player character but unfortunately he only gets ten minutes or so.

Good, but could've been so much better.

Francis Ford Coppola's new intense family drama. Though I was expecting something more from the story but I'm still highly recommending it for its stunning piece of camera works & magical use of lights & shadows. Coppola beautifully shot the film in Black & White format where all the flashbacks comes in color. There are some criticisms as Vincent Gallo played the title role but I think he did a fine credible job. And the young actor Alden Ehrenreich, played Tetro's younger brother 'Bennie' all the time reminding me of Leonardo DiCaprio...mainly with his eyes & smiles...there are pretty much similarities between them in look actually.

"Dark country" 5/10

I guess most of the low budget went to the Hollywood actors involved.

What we get is a newly maried couple driving through the desert in the middle of the night. For 1 and a half hour.

Sure they hit somebody along the way and then pic him up. Turns out he's a weirdo. Things gets weird and violent and more and more fucked and in the end we get a twist ending.

But all in all Dark Country is two people driving through a desert in the middle of the night..

Would've worked well as a short.

Eye candy can do wonders...

12 Angry Men (1957). i can see why this is one of Roshiq's favs, if not No.#1. This classic is nigh perfect if not so. 12 Angry Men takes place almost solely in one room, the jury room. The stifling heat only adds to the symbolism of the boiling emotions as these men decide the fate of a young man. This great character study beautifully typifies the hidden agendas as well as the inculcated notions as instilled into man by culture. We have bigotry, boredom, apathy, insecurity, peer pressure, repressed anger, alienation, arogance,... Well, you get the idea. There is one scene that absolutely portrays the power of man's social nature so wonderfully that it was chilling. And those closeup shots at the end-kudos. All in all a movie deserving the moniker of a classic.

Bad Lieutenant (1992). Thankfully, this movie was only around 96 minutes or so, because i could not have taken any more. That said, Harvey Keitel really portrayed a rather bad cop in this disturbing flick. In fact, Keitel's performance was nothing short of brilliant. Flip flopping from rage to blatant opportunism to heartfelt bouts of angst and despondency, one can say that this whole flick hung on Harvey's performance, and he came though big time. This was not an entertaining nor a fun movie, but an important movie nonetheless. The story itself was a perfect mess, pretty much a snapshot out of an anti-hero's last couple of days in a deep downward spiral, but it somehow tightened up just in time to take a mess of a story and turn it into art. Abel Ferrara's direction was incredible, extracting every ounce of Keitel's talent and deftly capturing it onto film. As a punch-gut movie, it was sheer brilliance. Mercie beaucoup.

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

Nothing short of atrocious. The premise of this film is almost intruiging, but Gray's laughable direction and the cringe-worthy script/acting combination make this film worthless. The thing stinks of non-sensical self-righteousness, boasting a character who is too victimized to be a villain and too cruel to be hero; this makes Gerard Butler's character simply that- a character, totally unfit for social commentay or tragic sympathy. The film goes from bad to worse as Butler starts preying on people we're supposed to believe are guilty, and the story becomes more and more presumptuous as it assumes we are blindly following its radical anarchy. I wasn't.

Under the Roofs of Paris (1930)

A whimsical "love story" that exhibits Clair's signature mix of hysterical cinematic comedy and pathos. It is also an exemplary piece of sound cinema, which is no surprise- I don't think it would be unreasonable to call Clair the first great film sound artist. This story is wonderfully unconventional and even takes some strange dramatic turns, but the characters (as they usually do in a Clair film) keep our attention and demand our sentiment- or at least our curiosity. I'm not sure whether I liked the ending- I'm still mulling over its surprising twist- but I loved watching the transition between Clair's silent cinema and his sound cinema, and the in-between he liked to occupy at this stage of his career.

The Hurt Locker (2009)

An incredible war film which has garnered deserved praise for both its barbaric realism and exciting action. Bigelow has always been a director of enormous talent, and I am glad to see her find a real gem in this script, a story that lets her utlize her eye for movement and her delightful sense of humor.Using the Iraq war as a backdrop, she explores intense psychological questions without attempting pretentious answers. The cast is one of the best parts of this film- Mackie, Fiennes, Pearce, and especially Jeremy Renner- these are actors of extraordinary power who find real motivation in these parts. The key to the film's success is the way it uses these actors not as pawns or political ideologies, as most contemporary war films do, but as human beings. The violence which occurs is not a result of war as an event but as a result of the people who participate in it. The intensity of an event is only as big as the people who cause it, and Bigelow allows us to see cause and effect relationships, both minor and catastrophic, in a reasonable and unpolitical way.

Black Dynamite (2009)

I haven't had a good laugh in a while, and 'Black Dynamite' gave me the opportunity to laugh at and with a handful of people who know blaxploitation well- and who see all the treasures along with all of the pitfalls to the extinct genre that gave the seventies so much soul. Chalk this up to intelligence; though the film may come across as dumb fun, director Scott Sanders and actor Michael Jai White know exactly what they're doing, and they do it well. The sexism and racism the genre once knew is here parodied and satired, and the result is an exquisite commentary and entertainment- the kind we thought too distant for recovery. One-liners, boom mics and afros abound, this is a tremendous success- let's hope for a sequel!

The House of the Devil (2009). Ti West did this 80s horror tribute with aplomb. Taking his time, he effectively creates an impending sense of doom around every corner, but where most of those same corners are in fact rather prosaic. In taking his time, the horror fan must be patient and let Ti do his job, which includes letting us get to know the lead actress so that when she faces her fate, it happens to a character that we now know and care about. There are no cheap scares or ripped off scenes here, but instead a mounting sense of apprehension as to how our little horror flick is going to play out, all the while fearful that we may just get caught off guard. The acting was quite solid, and 80s genre feel was perfect. Go high-waisted jeans! The story itself was nice and simple, but within that simplicity are hidden gems that things are not quite right. Shot with a gritty feel, the choice of film worked out well. Lastly, the score was awesome in its own right. All in all a solid entry. Mercie beaucoup.

Antichrist (2009). My god, that was one of the most beautifully shot movies ever. The use of focus and aggressive or unorthodox panning were sublime. The scenes themselves were splendidly crafted, with appropriate use of violence, gore, and sex. The symbolisms worked to convey the sense of psychosis that we each harbor and keep stuffed down. The story was solid, but the way in which it was told made it compelling. The acting-superb! And of course the direction was wonderful. A compelling and moving flick that has little company in the category of beautifully disturbing. Mercie beaucoup.

"Ju-on: Old lady in white" 10/10

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Kasper_76/28.jpg

This is simply a must-see for all fans of creepy horror movies.

Didn't think it was possible for a horror movie to creep me out anymore. This movie almost did it from beginning to end, just like the first Ju-on, and I was flabbergasted to see this wasn't directed by Shimizu, but again by Ryűta Miyake (the guy behind the MUCH less succesful Ju-on: girl in black). But with this movie he did everything right, that he didn't managed with Girl In Black.
I seriously don't believe Shimizu could've done anything better with this movie... You don't get a bigger praise than that from me. You should be very proud Miyake.

Every time that old woman showed up..... brrrrrrr..

Neither that movie NOR Ryűta Miyake are in Netflix.:mad::mad:

Hated all the characters so I just couldn't get into this one. The scene with the outboard motor was cool but apart from that I thought this was just average.

Population 436.

Shirley Jackson's The Lottery meets The Stepford Wives.
After 20 minutes you have the whole thing figured out. There are no surprizes, and no reason to watch the next 80 minutes.

What version did you watch? The Aussie DVD is heavily cut.

I got it from my local video store, I think it said uncut or directors cut,but yes it was an Australian release. I returned it this morning, it's dollar day!!!! wooo hooo!!!!! What version should I see?

American swing

A fucking crap doco on plaitos the American swing club, just shot in typical American doco style with no substance at all.

There were a few nice asses hanging about in the air, but that was the only highlight.

3/10

The Jacket (2005). A solid entry that defies a genre, The Jacket is not to be pidgeon-holed. The DVD cover description kept me from watching this for way too long. The story itself may have a couple of holes, but this only serves to allow for more interpretations. The acting was solid, with great performances by Adien Brody, Keira Knightlely, Daniel Craig and company. In one sense, it is a combo of movies already done, but the direction makes it a fresh entry. This will prove to be a moving experience with a timeline that is both refreshing and competent. Ashe.

Patton (1970)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d7/Patton1.jpg/300px-Patton1.jpg

Wow! George C. Scott gives one of the finest & electrifying performances as the larger-than-life Patton. Also salute to Francis Ford Coppola and Edmund H. North for the brilliant script.

Carol Reed's another flawless piece of cinematic achievement in almost every area. Excellent cast (even in small roles) & stunning cinematography made it absolute gem of a film that stands up well today, and is definitely a highlight of not just the year it was released, but that whole 'film noir' decade as a whole. To some extent I even think, it's superior to The Third Man.

A Cold Night's Death (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068390/) (1973)

Scientists Culp and Wallach suspect that there is someone other than their research primates inhabiting their polar station.

An excellent TV movie from ABC. The bleak snowbound atmosphere and palpable anxiety between the two characters seems to be familiar with John Carpenter's THE THING, but here the action is almost exclusively psychological and there's nothing and nobody around to break the formidable tension. It's really astonishing how much is done with so little in this gem, just two men slowly unraveling a chilling mystery in a creepy research station.

Das Boot (extended version)

Its tense and claustrophobic, got some great performances (esp. Jurgen Prochnow as the captain) and looks great. Some of the cat and mouse scenes between the U-Boat and the destroyers of the British Navy hunting it are fantastic, the sound of the radar bouncing of the hull as the crew waits silently is especially memorable. Definitely a must see war film.

Wasn't blown away by it.

And I can easily understand if Jeremy Renner doesn't win an Oscar even tho he played the role well. he just didn't do anything extraordinary, imo.

Sedmikrásky (Daisies) (1966)

A remarkable madcap adventure viewed through a kaleidoscope . Two young women decide that because the world is a mess, then they ought to make a mess themselves. The ensuing hijinks play out in a chaotic whirlpool of bright colors, playful camera work, and bizarre editing techniques. The end result is a weird, wonderful feminist film-poem that is a true time capsule for the mid-60s.

Shutter Island.
Great atmosphere, nice performances all around, not a bad storyline.
Though even while I found it creative enough, at this point I'd really like to see a horror/mystery/sci-fi movie, like...ever again...that didn't use the cookie cutter "surprise/twist" ending that they all seem to these days.

I didn't much like the Laurie (or whoever) character, when she wasn't crying, she was being a bitch, when she wasn't being a bitch she was being crazy.
Wait...maybe that's not all that uncommon.

This incredible entry from director great David Lynch takes him out of his normal weird auteur role and shows that he can create a simple and emotional masterpiece of the human spirit. This flick is at times difficult to watch, but then the next moment it will have you riveted to the screen, moved beyond emotion by the inner strength of a dignified soul ensconced within the frame of a monster. The irony in this flick is how such profound beauty is found in the unsightly industrial world by looking beyond the physical monstrosity that is our protagonist. The black and white film works wonderfully, and the cinematography is beautiful. The editing was rather dignified, which is perfect for this film. Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt helm their characters with aplomb. An absolute must see that will mine tears out of the most phlegmatic of beings. Mercie beaucoup.
