Salo, or the 100 Days of Sodom (1975)
This is probably the hardest movie to watch that I've ever seen. It isn't like Cannibal Holocaust or Nekromantik in the fact that it is totally believable. Though it isn't a horror movie per say, it's one of the scariest films I've ever seen.
100% right on this one.
egh. i feel like i get "salo flashbacks" sometimes.

last thing i watched is some low budget thing called Rise of the Dead that was so riviting that i fell asleep 30 minutes into it.
2007 was a great year for horror .. there seems to be a lot of new interest in the genre which means more money and better quality productions.
horror fans arent starving anymore ... the low budget back yard poopers are harder for me to take these days.

Aliens of the Deep.
Jimmy Cameron's IMAX documentary...the name and the first 15 minutes made the premise gleefully delicious, and the rest of the 75 mins didn't. For the most part, it was talk, talk and more talk inside the subs between Cameron and his film-making crew, and crew from the NASA.
The so-called ocean "Aliens" don't make a show till late in the second half, and even then, they are offered bare minimum screen-space (about 8 mins or so). Overall, I was pretty disappointed by this one. Marine engineers and explorers might go ga-ga over it, but I was left wanting.

funny games remake (2008)
i went in expecting to be disappointed on a few levels, but came out feeling very pleased (well...as "pleased" as one can feel after watching this movie). i definitely wasn't disappointed. i mean, it's not as good as the original probably for the simple fact that it's not the original, but it was still extremely effective. the performances were good, too (naomi watts was great).
i think fans of the original will be satisfied.

wasn't looking forward to this one ... getting really sick of jim carrey and steve carell ... and i didn't much enjoy them in this one either...
BUT........
the visuals were stunning .. especially the whoville scenes.
otherwise - seeing people/creatures fall down, drop things, eggagerated movements ... the same old shit shown in every single god damn animated film in the last 5 years was all right there again.
speaking of which - there was an ad for Ice Age 3....
i'm sure it will disappoint as well.

I kind of enjoyed the 1st 2/3s of this movie until it hamfistedly attempted to transcend the genre (western) into some kind of fantasy morality odyssey

Oh Brother Where Art Thou achieved this much more deftly.

Plenty of gore, splatter, cheesy moments and some awesome cinematography and neat direction (although it did have some minor script flaws)...this is one movie which BEGS to be seen on a cinema screen (ala Grindhouse) for the experience to be believed.

I really want to see this one on the big screen. I have enjoyed Neil Marshall's work in the past and I know he loves this stuff so it will have heart!
IMHO Dog Soldiers not only brought back the Werewolf movie but also the old school fx and costumed creatures too! I loved that one!
And The Descent, again only in my opinion, will go down as one of the best of 2000's in Horror.
So no matter what, I will at least have fun with this movie.
As far as critics, I only read their reviews after I have seen the movie, that way I either get another insight to it or I get to laugh my ass off at their stupidity!

didn't have time for a family movie last night so we watched the 1st two episodes of Taxi - season 1 been decades sinc ei saw those shows.
then after everyone else crashed i watched AVP R.
The nice thing about not seeing a movie like this for a long while after it's released - is that you hear a ton of bad things about it so you expect the worst.
Turns out that it was nowhere as bad as i thought it would be.
It was 10 times better than the 1st one ..
the casting was pretty bad, and there were some dumb choices with some of the incidentals... but there were a couple of clever turns i had to respect - such as the different direction this one took re. the human/predator relationship.
it kept me watching and interested ..something the 1st one failed to do.

Wow, I haven't seen so complete a rip off of "Escape From New York" since, well..."Escape From LA".
Actually it's not a complete rip off of "New York" it also steals from "Mad Max" and "Resident Evil" and a little bit of George Romero's "Knight Riders" too.
But you know what's kind of funny about all of this. The movie is actually entertaining.I guess when you take the best parts from other films and blend them all together you can't help but come up with something fun.

Four of the Apocalypse.
Fulci certainly had an eye for westerns. Too bad he didnt pursue that genre, or he might have given some veterans over there a real run for their money.
This one is sorta like Once Upon A Time In The West crossed with Django, with a slight flavor of The Wild Bunch. But it is a real treat - both visually and script-wise. A band of misfit criminals who have to cling together because the townsfolk want them dead, and a mysterious gunman who joins the group later with plans of his own...delicious! The dude who plays Chaco (the gunman) is the scene-stealer, and his character dominates all through the second half. There is enough gore to satisfy Fulci fans, including some really tough brutality scenes and a gut-wrenching cannibal scene.
For the most part, I liked it. It is a notch above Fulci's later offerings in horror. Well worth a check if you can find it.
Rating - * * * ½

"Stallone back in action with 2-film deal
Boxoffice comeback champ Sylvester Stallone has inked a lucrative deal to direct and star in two action films with "Rambo" producers Danny Dimbort,
Several scripts are being considered for follow-ups to his surprise hit sequels to "First Blood" and "Rocky." With Nu Image/Millennium's new Writers Guild of America interim deal speeding up the process, the first script is expected to be ready by the fall, with production set to begin shortly thereafter.
"The past year and a half of working with Avi, his partners Danny and Trevor and his film family has been nothing but a high point for me and my career and an extremely rewarding experience," Stallone said. "Avi is a real gentleman and a man of his word."
Stallone will produce the films with Kevin King-Templeton and Lerner. Dimbort, Short and Boaz Davidson will serve as executive producers.
It's a deal few would have expected just a few years ago, when Stallone followed up his role in "Spy Kids 3D: Game Over" with a failed network boxing reality TV series, "The Contender." But in 2006, Stallone wrote, directed and starred in "Rocky Balboa," the sixth "Rocky" film, 16 years after the previous sequel in the franchise. The MGM release grossed $70 million on an estimated $24 million budget.
The second part of Stallone's one-two punch came with the current release "Rambo," which he also stars in, wrote and directed. The film, distributed by Lionsgate, made $18.2 million in its opening weekend and earned an estimated $25 million in its first 10 days of release.

Should a movie be like this - opening credits roll, Rambo walks in holding a minigun against an army, keeps blasting away for 90 minutes, a shot of the carnage he did, and end credits roll?
Every good story needs a decent buildup - in case of Rambo, it was exceptional and horrific at the same time, if you related to the true-life crimes showed as glimpses in the first 20-25 odd-minutes.

Though you may find some mixed reviews about the movie, but I'll say ....WoW! Argento is back with the 70's splatter fest! And this time he is more brutal with the victims. I quite enjoyed all the gore parts, blood sheds, nudity and his usual chilling background scores. But little bit disappointed with the final climax. Moreover, feeling somewhat sorry for myself that I still haven't seen Inferno yet. I'll order it on e-bay soon.

The Seeker (The Dark is Rising)
one of the recent spate of films attempting to cash in on the Harry Potter/Young Adult Fantasy wave.
Based on the book by Susan Cooper..
Competently made with a couple of likeable characters .. it just didn't have the groceries to get out from under the shadow of the bigger more successful films. Very predictable and blah ending.
I didn't dislike it - but i sure didnt think it was great.
the H. Potters still lead the genre, followed by ... oh Spiderwick i guess, then the Golden Compass (for the polar bears and set design only), then The Seeker ... in that order (for me)
as always - in a hurry to make a buck, Hollywood is going to bleed this one dry.

The Mist - I highly enjoyed this, loved the short story and I thought Frank Darabont did an excellent job with the source material(Again). The ending was refreshingly bold. 8/10

Yeah, I really like this one too. Having a Kung-Fu element in a Hammer Horror film seems like a slightly rum idea, but it works, and Peter Cushing is great as usual. It's something a bit different, like how the oriental vampires are repelled by images of the Buddha instead of the cross!

Doomsday
Wow! What a mess this one was. I loved and hated soooo much of it in equal measures that it will take repeated viewings to reach a final verdict. It certainly isn't like anything made this century. It feels like a lost film from the mid 80s. In the first 5 minutes you get a naked woman in a bathtub with a shotgun...and it just gets more fetishistic from there. The single weakest element is the soundtrack with Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Fine Young Cannibals (yeah, I get the pun Neil, but the song still makes me want to puke) and even the awesome motif from 28 Days Later is thrown in there. The score, however is excellent with Carpenteresque synth and sweeping orchestral beats.
If you loved Escape From New York, The Road Warrior, Knightriders, 28 Weeks Later, and even Reign of Fire you'll no doubt enjoy this film, but it still plays a little like a hollow (albeit loving) tribute.

The Mist. Besides the terrible CGI work, this film was outstanding. One of the best horror / sci-fi films of 2007, for sure. Frank Darabont is a very good director. The camera work and cinematgraphy within this film definitely stood out. Very dynamic effects through the use of focus. And that ending? There could be no other ending. Effing brilliant. 8/10

would have been a 9.5 but the credits roll too early. I hate how some films just do that. I mean, it wasn't a bad ending by any means, in fact, I think that was one of the best climaxes i've seen in any horror film. This was my first viewing of it, and I can't believe how much i've been missing out. Amazing movie.
