Absolutely! A film that awes. Unfortunately, not many of them.
Depends on the audience I think. I saw it once or twice as a kid and didn't think anything of it. It was more intellectual than visual (which is generally what holds a child's attention), so when I saw it as an adult with actual attention and understanding, it was a fantastic film. I would even say one of my favorites from the 70s/80s era. And I just die whenever I see someone make references to the sculpting scene in another movie!

First time you see it?
Those are my two favorite werewolf films, by far.
::::::SPOILERS BELOW!::::::::::::::::
The opening... the cinéma vérité style... really blew my hair back. Then Dante backed off of that, and the rest of the film was a fairly interesting tale, with some really heavy scenes, especially the scene where the maniac changes into a werewolf & takes the bullet out of his head. Lastly, I always kinda wondered why, when the heroine reporter changes into a werewolf on air, why they made her a Lon Chaney Jr type of wolf, with a short snout, instead of the terrifying wolves they had already established?

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
Having never seen any of the Star Wars movies (don't kill me, I just wasn't that interested) and another entry coming out in December, I decided to marathon all six of them to prepare myself for the latest chapter. Starting out with the original movie, I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed. I definitely enjoyed it, but I'm just hoping this isn't the best installment in the series. A New Hope focuses on the Rebel Alliance, led by Princess Leia, and its attempt to destroy the Galactic Empire's space station, the Death Star. A farmhand named Luke Skywalker acquires droids that have the architectural plans for the Death Star. The Empire searches for the missing droids, and Luke agrees to help Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi to get the plans to the Rebel Alliance and save the galaxy from the Empire's tyrannical rule. The only reason I was slightly disappointed by the movie was because the first 45 minutes or so were just plain boring. The initially slow-moving plot and cornball dialog didn't really impress me much. What kept me watching was the amazing set pieces and cinematography; it really made up for the flaws the beginning of the movie had. The last half of the movie, however, is incredibly entertaining, fun and action-packed. The climax especially was breathtaking and impossible to forget. The imaginative world also makes me excited to watch the rest of the series. There were quite a few flaws with the original Star Wars that disappointed me a bit, but once it gets going, A New Hope is an undeniably fun ride that I wish to take again.

I hate to nit pick but how you mean by original? The Howling was the first howling title that I'm aware of, and there were other werewolf movies prior to Lon Chaney.

I had always thought she wasn't done changing yet. Surely her friend wouldn't let her turn all the way when she'd be more powerful and harder to kill. Had to knock her off before she could get to far.

I think Martha just means the original one The Wolf Man, period. Maybe she's not aware of Werewolf of London, or is just keeping things simple.

Glad you finally saw it!
Sorry you found the first 45mins boring. I think it's more of an era piece than some people realize. The dialogue and sensibilities are very late 60's early 70's (like Han calling Leia "sister".
The first 45mins wasn't boring or slow to me, though I was a kid when I first saw it. Still, if you don't mind me saying so, you kinda have to soak in the atmosphere and characters... the sets/costumes/music are designed to take you out of who and where you are, and transport you into this world. Got to let that happen. A New Hope is the best at doing that.
Empire Strikes Back is faster moving, as are all the rest, though Empire is considered the "other good film". You'll probably find Empire more engaging. But still, you have to let go of your conscious self... seriously. Don't miss the experience by being a critic during the film. You only get one chance to see it for the first time. Seriously.

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Improving on almost every aspect of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back manages to be the rare sequel to undeniably top its predecessor in both quality and entertainment value while still not feeling rehashed. This was the Star Wars I wanted with the original, and it was extremely satisfying. In The Empire Strikes Back, the Galactic empire is on the hunt for Luke Skywalker and the rest of the Rebel Alliance. While Darth Vader is chasing Han Solo, Princess Leia and others across the galaxy, Luke studies the force under Jedi Master Yoda. Structurally, the film isn't as controlled as A New Hope, featuring long action scenes intertwined with dialog-heavy scenes of characterization, but that's an easily forgiven issue. The intense action scenes and darker plot make this a more involving film than its predecessor, and the young actors seemed a lot more confident in their roles. The Empire Strikes Back is an exciting film from start to finish, especially during the final thirty minutes when Luke faces off with Darth Vader. George Lucas really knows how to make a memorable climax. Although it does get a little cheesy right at the end, The Empire Strikes Back is a great improvement to its predecessor, and it set a high bar for movie sequels.

I thought that might be what she meant, but if she appreciates Wolf Man, she really should give Werewolf of London a watch. The make up for the Wolf Man was supposed to be used it it after all. If Henry Hull didn't hate the process and time it took to wear it, maybe this movie would've been the iconic classic that everyone remembers. But who knows...
Makes sense. But, I don't know, it's been a long time since I've seen it, but the scene crescendos (the music, the shot)... presenting her it all her horror, and I believe she was silent and not moving, indicating she was done.
Could be. I saw it more as she was loosing herself to the monster, still fighting it's killer instincts or whatever. It's so brief you could really theorize it a lot of different ways.

There are a couple classics that I've never seen, but usually it's movies that I watched when I was younger and wasn't paying attention to like Titanic or Back to the Future or Indiana Jones. I've seen those but I want to watch them for real since it's been so long since I've watched those. As for Star Wars, I just was never that interested in watching them until now. I don't know if this even makes sense lol.
Actually, I now remember that I saw Episode III in the theater when I was 5 years old. I don't remember anything from it, so I need to watch it again. I've also seen parts of Phantom Menace but not the whole thing. Stuff like that.

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
I've finally come to the finale of the original trilogy, and although I still can't say I'm a huge fan of the franchise, I've really enjoyed all three of the original Star Wars films, even if there are glaring flaws that no one seems to talk about. Of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi definitely has the most noticeable problems, but it does end the series in a suitably ambitious and entertaining fashion. In Return of the Jedi, the Galactic Empire is building a second Death Star to finally destroy the Rebel Alliance, and Emperor Palpatine is personally overseeing the project. The Rebel Fleet launches a full-scale attack onto the Death Star in order to prevent its completion and kill Palpatine. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker attempts to bring Darth Vader out of the Dark Side of the Force. The action scenes in Episode VI are a bit more inconsistent than in the other movies, but I have to mention the speeder bike chase scenes. It's without a doubt my favorite scene in the series so far because it's so fast-paced, well shot and intense. It was definitely the highlight of the movie. One of the weaker action scenes was a bizarre set piece with the Ewoks. The entire scene was just awkward; I find it hard to believe that a primitive race of small hairy creatures armed with sticks could defeat the Imperial stormtroopers. Return of the Jedi also didn't improve on the cheesy father-son plot from The Empire Strikes Back. Watching Luke pitifully try to convince Darth Vader to step away from the Dark Side was groan-inducing. Nevertheless, the strengths of the Star Wars series are still on full display here. The utter imagination and detail put into the universe is incredible, and the film is just as exciting as its predecessors. Return of the Jedi isn't as competent as the previous films, but it is a satisfying and sporadically rousing conclusion.

Yes, Luke's first meeting Vader on Endor is so cringe inducing. I've enjoyed mimicking luke from that scene for laughs a long time. Hamill is basically mentally disabled in that scene.
Mark was Oscar worthy in New Hope, and cringe worthy in Jedi. Highlights of Jedi were the last space fight for the Deathstar, and Luke's long encounter with the Emperor.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
Rating: 3/10
This is a generally well received film, both at the time, and in perpetuity. I am most decidedly on the other side of the fence on this one. I thought it was slow, absurd and mostly devoid of humor, suspense, scariness, intrigue, depth of plot and character.
I don't think the film properly established an empathetic emotional connection with Dr. Phibes' pain or character. He'd speak with stoic poetry at the picture of his wife, but I didn't find it convincing or emotionally evocative. The only other characters to grasp at were the detectives; but I found them equally stoic and shallow, and a bit less than mildly amusing. In the last quarter of the film, the father, of the captured son, added a degree of human connection and emotion, but hardly a cap full.
The kills, as it were, were inventive, but carried out as a matter of fact, without much suspense, rage or victim orientaded empathy (with a few slight exceptions). The sets were nice though.

Zombi 2 (1979)
5/10
First of all, is the background supposed to be visually warping -- as if someone filmed a copy off a screen that was twisting in the wind a bit on the sides -- or did I see a warped version? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8mpY4tN8_Q) If it's like that intentionally, I wonder why I couldn't find any written mention of it?
Anyway, Zombi 2 is surreal... any appreciation of the film, beyond the gorehounds, is the arthouse approach. There's a ton of unrealistic scenes, jumpy and jump-cut editing, and mix of good and amatuer acting. There's a few creative cinema scenes and shots. If that's what you like, or you like to make fun of a film with your buddies, ala MST3K, then you might enjoy it.

I really like the immersement -- sound FX, music, visual FX, the realistic acting (naturalistic or improvised performances), the pacing (that some would feel is slow).
A theatre setting, or quiet isolated setting, really enhances the experience. If one has things they need to get to, or interruptions, or one's sensitized to an MTV fast pace, it can be difficult to sync with. And I mean that in general, not that those pertain to you.

It was a'right. Can't help but I would've been better focused if maybe I had watched the cleaned up DVD version. I'll have to check mine out and see if it's any better. I think its biggest problem though was something about a Warhol cast... I am not a fan.

Alice, Sweet Alice
I wouldn't call either a new favorite, but they entertained. I've heard A,SA mentioned many times before I got it, I don't know if it's supposed to be popular, but I'm not really getting the hype. It's got great suspense for a ''who dun' it'', but I like a more clear answer. I'm doubt Alice is completely innocent by that ending. And I'm tempted to put this movie on my shit list because of kitten abuse.
Psychomania on the other hand was terrible but enjoyable terrible. Like I should've dug out my bottle of whine for all the cheese. Either way I enjoyed it.

The standout thing to me about Alice Sweet Alice is the general atmosphere. Things never seem quite right. The film always feels a little dirty, unsettling. I don't count it among my favorites but I do like it quite a bit.

Maybe it didn't have enough kills for me or something idk. It did feel exciting here and there when the sister died, and you start to think she's going to get back at everyone that pissed her off, like the perverted asshole landlord and her bitch aunt. But a kitten gets in the crossfire and she only hurts her aunt (if that was her I'm STILL lost on who killed or attacked who). The landlord gets it but it's from the older broad who kills Alice's father. 8/

As I mentioned to the reply above but maybe not in so many words, it did have great atmosphere, that I agree. Too much mystery for me though, I really would like a more clear answer on who did all the attacking... Unsettling is a very good word for it.
OMG more british biker ghosts please! ::big grin::

...Someone please explain this movie to me. I feel like I blinked and missed half of it. STRAW DOGS (1971). John McCarthy in THE MODERN HORROR FILM considers this a horror film and I must say I agree. A little flawed and slow moving but picks up quick with a rather nasty rape scene and the final segment at the house is incredibly intense and quite frightening. Dustin Hoffmann is great as the smug pacifist who is driven to his breaking point by a group of violent drunken louts and lovely Susan George has never been better. This came out around the same time as A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and while I like both films, think SD still packs more of a punch. ****

THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK (1973)
May be some spoilers here...............
First saw this right before turning 12 and scared me quite a bit, especially the part involving the cat and the two families. Saw it a couple of years later with some friends and we were all laughing at how campy it was. One bud, who had a very catchy laugh was howling during the part where the monsters arm goes through the bathroom window when the one guy is on the toilet. When said guy busts through the front door to escape, my friend literally fell out of his seat.
Seen today through my cranky middle aged eyes, TLOBC is still pretty silly, but has a quirky charm about that makes You like it. Pretty scenery and really, You could do a lot worse. ***

The Blob 1988
3/10
It had some nifty 80's-dated FX and Shawnee Smith's pretty face... but nothing else. It was more of an homage to other sci-fi films without being the least bit thought provoking. Or it's a bit of a parody to The Blob, without being the least bit funny. Very poor character development -- didn't care about, nor even believe, in any character. Wasn't scary, and built little suspense -- though I do applaud the phone booth scene.
It even miffed on it's chances at some sci-fi wonderment, which, for The Blob, is just inexcusable. I've always liked it when the scientist, stands before the generals and president, explains the creature and how we're all in big trouble. They didn't even have that.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)
6.5/10
Never a dull moment, nice cinematography, with some very effectively shot scenes. Zakes Mokae crawls under your skin as a convincing statist voodoo villain. Although Bill Pulman shows more range than in any other roll I've seen him depict, his lead characterization is still much too smugly skating on the surface. I think a deep crevice of emotion was required, and Pulman a poor casting choice. While all the characters were rather shallow and failing to inspire much empathy, the story narrative was fairly fascinating and aggressively nimble.
The crucial failure of the film was the cartoonish scattershot ending, out of step with the film's prior serious, realistic tone and cinematic visual effects. Was like Elm St' Dream Warriors breakdanced into The Exorcist. A more visceral and emotionally accessible lead, plus a more realistic stark ending would have solidified an otherwise solid effort.

I know what you mean. Star Trek 79 is a big screen film. There's plenty of wonderment in it. I like it a lot. It probably should have been edited down, but for me its big screen visuals, concepts and sci-fi wonderment beat the hoard of silly cheesey content in Star Treks that came after.
Wrath of Khan was the best of the original cast. It had good balance. I think you both will like it a lot. There's aspects of it that haven't aged well, but it's still the best. First Contact is worthy challenger.

If you're not famililar with the Star Trek movies, there's an odd pattern to them. I wonder if anyone involved was actually proud of being part of this movie. I doubt Tom Cruise was. Damn did he look stupid. His acting wasn't much better.
Still one of the best fantasy flicks of the 80s together with Labyrinth and Neverending Story.
Agreed and I loved the soundtrack.
MST3K HOBGOBLIN 1988
Can't stop watch Mystery Science Theater now. This movie literally puked on the screen but the narrative was worth it.

.
I've read there's 3 different versions of the movie. Do you know if the difference between them is just the soundtrack?

Could very well be. I just saw the one ages ago with Bryan Ferry on the soundtrack.

Bryan Ferry??
The one on Netflix (only version I've seen) only contains Classical music.

Well there's the difference then. The version i saw has "Is Your Love Strong Enough" by Bryan Ferry and was mainly scored by Tangerine Dream. It also has another song in it written by Jon Anderson of Yes. Can't think of the name. It's all pretty good.

I can't imagine this film with Roxy Music. I saw it on TV late 80s, I don't remember the music, but I'm pretty sure it was classical/instrumental.

So it's sounds like some people haven't seen LEGEND with what I think is a pretty awesome soundtrack. It's half of what I enjoyed about it. ::confused::
HOUSEBOAT HORROR 1989
Fairly decent cheese from down under. A film crew and rock band are terrorized (and slashed) by a Jason-like character on their rented houseboat.

It must be a very different experience at least.
Also, on Youtube I see there is a 1 and a half hour version, a 1 hour and 50 minutes version and a 2 hours and 17 minutes version. All with the classical soundtrack. I'm pretty sure I've only seen the 1 and a half hour version.

10 To Midnight (1983)
Charles Bronson vs a psycho killer.
It's no Death Wish, but it's alright.

ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE 1987
Well, I can certainly vouch that it was a nightmare. But I live for this stuff.

Not A Love Story: A Film About Pornography(1981)
Found this doc via the Nightmares In Wax EP(Dead Alive before they were Dead Alive)
NSFW
TW:basically most you can think of. Graphic sex, restraints, violence, etc.
Its upsetting and still worth a watch. I can see why Gloria Steinem wrote in an essay from around that time that S&M was another form of patriarchy. Not commenting that is or is not.
The quality of the film isn't great. Its from 1981 and seems to have degraded a bit over that time.
Its on youtube, but not going to imbed it due to the graphic nature of the film. Just linking it.

The Baby (1973) 7/10 Really odd. I'd heard good things about Anjanette Comer (library has all of Harlan Ellison's TV and movie reviews as ebooks) so I thought I'd give it a shot. Slows down too much in the middle, but the ending is worth it. Did not see that coming.
Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) 6/10 Recommended on "The 50 Best Horror Movies You've Never Seen". More worth watching as a documentary on life in the 1970s than a horror movie. Huge cars, huge phones, everybody has a cigarette.
Oh man, I remember Tangerine Dream. They did the soundtrack to Flashpoint, one of my favorites.
