Last night we watched Black Christmas (the original 1974 version) and Black Christmas (the remake), back to back...A very enjoyable experience...I love to watch the originals and their remakes one after the other, especially when they're both really good movies :)

Die Hard With a Vengeance. 08/10
Wife hadnt seen it, so we popped the DVD in. Still rank it 2nd in the franchise behind the original. Sam Jackson is one badass from Harlem, and John McClane kicks butt as usual. Jeremy Irons is a surprise package, and does awfully great. Yippie Ki Yay, motherfucker!!
The Grudge 2. 04/10
The scares were there, and bigger...but the story was a let down. Some really corny characterization, and a very sloppy climax ruined what could have been an improvement on the original. It had its fun moments in the first half, so I feel a bit gracious...
The Crow. 07/10
I love the atmosphere in the Crow. The dark, brooding and intense "raining" stuff gets to me every time. And Brandon Lee as Eric Draven absolutely kicks ass...if only he didnt get so much dialogue (I always thought silence could have been a real asset to the Crow). Ernie Hudson is ok, and the rest of the supporting cast round up rather nicely. All in all, a fun and entertaining flick.

Skinwalkers. 07/10
Dont ask me how I have seen this WAY before its Aug 10th release (that is a secret and will always be ;) ), but the movie surprised me. It has a fresh approach to the werewolf lore, and some of the scenes kick serious ass!!
The actors performed decently to some neat scripting and direction, and there are some twists after the mid-part which keep you riveted to attention.
A must watch, when it releases next week. Recommended by me.:D

I didn't know much about this going in to and after seeing it, all I can really say is... Wow. Original, fast paced, funny, simple plot. There's not a ton of gore, but there are a lot of deaths and an ending I didn't see coming. The creature FX were great with the exception of some obvious CGI at the very end. This is now the fourth Asian horror film that I give my official stamp of approval (The other 3 are Battle Royale, Ichi The Killer & The Eye.) This was entertaining from start to finish.

Hmm...I thought it was a lame attempt to copy Hollywood's Jurassic Park histrionics, with a very awkward script which made it look repetitive. It wasnt anything originally Asian either, hence my not-too-impressed feelings for it.
The effects were more than decent, so I gave it a 05/10 rating.

Haven't seen this one in a while. It's a real treat to take a long break from this one and then watch it with semi-fresh eyes again. Really fun film and something of a black comedy classic. Sure the ending is a little disconcerting, but it works for me and Christian Bale's performance is (as usual) simply brilliant.

Club Dread was their godaweful worst film...after seeing super troopers initially, I was SO let down. The only remotely funny thing I found about it was the "you guys are fucking dead" bit...that, and I thought the pacman idea was kinda cool, other than that, slop.
Beerfest DID somewhat redeem them, I feel...I won't avoid their next one...
Saw Donnie Darko directors cut...I know it TRIED to explain the film better, but it still felt pretty open ended to interpretation to me, I was cool with how things were in the original cut, but hey...very enjoyable one way or another.
It'd have to have one of the greatest soundtracks/score of all time. Weird, funny, dark, sad...leaves you feeling nothin' but strange.

Django (1966)
Spaghetti Western director Sergio Corbucci turns Franco Nero into an icon (even if it is a "Man With No Name" rip-off) in this, his finest western - unless you like the silliness of the Trinity series. Based on the fumetto (Italian comic book) of the same name about a gunslinger who drags a coffin behind him wherever he goes, Django stands out from it's dry dusty contemporaries by setting the film in a muddy, sloppy environment. The plot meanders a bit and the English-language dubbing is silly sounding, but the Italian-language track plays out with a level of black comedy and brutality rarely seen from westerns of this era. Excellent cinematography, over-the-top violence and groovy theme song make this one a must-see for fans of the genre.
In an interesting sidebar, Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust) served as assistant director.

Within the next few days I plan on watching the following. I've written what I'm expecting from each beside the title.
300: I'm expecting a movie that looks stunning, and has amazing action sequences. Nothing else. I'm going to go out and say the plot will be barebones, and the dailogue atrocious.
The Fountain: I expect this to be an amazing movie, but one which is difficult to get through in one sitting. The premise sounds intriguing, and the talent is extraordinary... but it doesn't seem like something I'd find interesting. The medieval parts expecially.
Pizza: Not sure. It's indie and I heard it was bad, but somehow... I think I'll like it. I just hope it's shorter and doesn't spam past 1h 40m.
Choker: It's done to look like a Grindhouse flick, and it is a Grindhouse flick. Looks low-budget talent-wise, but not film-wise. Doesn't suffer from overly shakey DV, or maybe that's hidden by the film grain and flicker.
The Tripper: Looks really fun, with political backdrops.
Blades of Glory: A colourful, weird, witty, stupid-funny (that doesn't rely on toilet humour) flick. I'm hoping for a few laughs.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: I'm worried that since I've seen the 58932 sequels that this will bore the pants off of me, because I will be so tired of the same old plotline used time and time again.

There's good action and good laughs, but it seemed to be a little slow moving for spurts here and there during the first half of the film. All in all, it's a fun movie.... It just didn't quite live up to the lofty bar set by Shaun of the Dead.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh yes! This was a breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed this film from start to finish. It could have used a little more gore, but I can overlook the lack thereof because of the film's unique variation on a slasher film. Overall this was a delight. Dark, funny, cool... Just an all-around really fun movie to watch. I recommend it to slasher fans tired of the same old slasher films and wanting something a little diffferent.

300 - Better than I had assumed. The dialogue was a weak point; feeling too modern and out-of-context in places. As a whole it was overly corny, but that worked in it's favour - generating muliple one-linears, and some segments even managed to be inspirational (and metaphorical.) Visually... it was stunning, although in the action scenes the slow-mo CGI blood looked overly unrealistic and didn't even work in the already stylistic setting. I didn't care for the homophobic nature of it either, expecially since they went out of their way for it (Changing the Spartans stance on same-sex relations for a lousy insult was in bad form.)

Half Way through SLither, love it so far :)
Marathon Man: Good acting, interesting story, boring over all though. Just took too long.

I didnt think it was homophobic, (i assume you are referring to the comment about athenians being "boylovers"). I dont think you can say in one sentance that the dialogue was too modern and then complain about a very old-school way of looking at homosexuality in the same movie. It cant be authentic but progressive. Just my 2 cents.

It was homophobic not only in that line of dialogue, but in the portrayal of Xerxes (masculine figure vs. effeminate figure). Your comment about an old-school way of looking at homosexulity is misplaced. Old school, but not THIS old school. The Spartans actually partook in same-sex relations much like the Athenians. I was saying it was homophobic because it completely reversed this aspect of history simply to portray that image. Perhaps due to the adapters feelings, or to connect to their target audience. If anything, this change is attempting to further modernize the film.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
WOW! The opening five minutes alone make this one worth watching. This is a film that could never have come out of Hollywood. There is no morality at all. I never read the book (which inspired Cobain to write the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit") but my wife had and she still thought this was a really cool adaptation.
It's about an 18th Century Parisian with the most profoundly sensative sense of smell in history and his obsessive quest to create the perfect perfume. He is the perfect answer to the staid and done-to-death Dr. Frankenstein-type of wealthy obsessive mad scientist. He is a street urchin, devoid of education and morally bankrupt. The story is also a great metaphor for the contemporary celebrity worship in that the protagonist really is a nobody who puts on a false image (a perfume) and is transformed...only to find that the end which he pursued ultimately leaves him unfulfilled.
It lags in the middle and has several gaps in logic, but those are more than made up for by the fantastic production and costume design, brilliant lighting and cinematography and sheer audacity of filmmaker Tom Tykwer (Run Lola, Run.)
Highly recommended to fans of period costume films.

Really one of the greatest motion pictures ever made, and my favorite Brando performance by a mile-and-a-half. The ending is so powerful, so uplifting, so strong, that it seems like we are living the experience, not just watching it.
And, it delivers the finest spoken line in cinema history:
"You think you're God Almighty, but you know what you are? You're a cheap, lousy, dirty, stinkin' mug! And I'm glad what I done to you, ya hear that? I'm glad what I done!"
Sends chills up and down my spine whenever I hear it- but only from Marlon's mouth. Golden...

Die Hard 4.0
I guess fans of the series will see this regardless, what'll make them happy is they won't be dissapointed. It met my expectations, those being "Die Hard 1 was classic and incomparable for it's time, 2 was a louder (and IMO crappier) remake more or less, 3 was the redeemer...so I hope it's a lot better than 2, and around as good as 3."
Expectations met.
Good dialogue, a couple of interesting villains (you'll know who when you see it), some chunky fights, and a decent plot.
Not lacking violence...nothing graphic like blood splattering walls from bullet wounds or severed limbs, but all very well done.
Meets the standard of the diehard franchise being the "above average action series" that it is.
Definately a good one to go out on, and not a dissapointment whatsoever.

Scarface (1932)
If I were to compile a list of the most important films of all time, this would have a comfy position in it. Everytime I watch it I like it more, and I loved it to begin with. The performances are impeccable, the violence extreme (for the conditions of the time period, of course), and the story heartbreakingly tragic.

Out of the Past (1947)
Jacques Tourneur directs two of my all-time favorite actors Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas in this amazing noir classic... and somehow Jane Greer steals the show as the ultimate femme fatale. Her performance is simply brilliant as a survive-at-any-cost, beauty who manipulates, lies and murders her way through life and still really believes that it isn't her fault. Stunning cinematography, awesome locations, plot twists a-plenty and more tough-guy dialog than you can shake a stick at make this one a must-see for fans of noir thrillers.

Overnight
Having seen this documentary several times I am still struck by the sheer idiocy and mania of the subject, Troy Duffy. For those of you who don't know, Troy Duffy was the overnight sensation who wrote Boondock Saints and sold it to Miramax for a cool $1Million + the bar he was working in...that's right, Miramax threw in the deed to the bar! He then wormed his way into directing the film and secured a huge recording contract for his band "The Brood".
Then he pissed it all away.
The film is a case study of paranoid maniac being indulged until no one can take it anymore. He pisses off everyone around him and sinks his career while trying to control every tiny aspect of everything around him...all the time thinking his shit don't stink and everyone else on the planet is an idiot deserving his derision.
The doc is not great. It's hardly Errol Morris quality, but the story and subject are truly one of a kind.
ANYONE wanting to work in Hollywood needs to see this film. It should be required viewing in all film schools.

The Tripper (Revised)
It's your typical slasher. It has the ensemble cast. It has the unique deaths. It has said cast finding the bodies hours after they were murdered, in a string. It has the killer who never dies. And it has your typical slasher cliffhanger. Sorry if I ruined it for you guys, but what did you expect? The graphic design work in this is absolutely horrid (by this I'm referring to the title cards, credits, and text and overlays in general) - why am I pointing this out? Because it makes the film seem very amatuerish. The cast is fine, the acting is fine and all the other talents behind the film do just fine. The effects work in this (for the 'trips') work quite well, and our implemented into the frames quite excellently. I am fond of the sillohuette and rainbow background effects applied to much of the ending. They were very well done. There is plenty of gore in this one for those looking for that. A good group scene where many limbs go a flyin'. The idea of being surrounded by people, yet still helpless (they are under the influence and unaware of anything, plus the cops blamed any reports on trips) is quite terrifying... yet it was not fully taken advantage of here. The political aspects of the film are not as strong as they could have been either... and unless you know your American presidents, much of it will go past your head. I think David Arquette has talent, but he requires work. With some revision, this film could have been great. As it is, it's just so-so. If your a slasher addict, it's worth your time. If your a horror fan, it might be worth your time... but don't expect much.

Vacancy is up next. Expect the same opinion-type post.

Goldfinger - The first real gritty and raw James Bond look came from this one. From the opening sequence to the feeling of revenge for the gold-plated "death", and the ultra cool attitude even when taken prisoner...Sean Connery leaves his stamp on this movie. Bond was never more realistic than this one...add a bevy of beauties and a most ruthless villian with a remarkably outrageous scheme...of course not forgetting the gorgeous Aston Martin...and you got one hell of an entertainer.

Vacancy (2007)
Those were some stunning opening and closing credit sequences! From the very first frame, somehow... from the limited amount of his work I've seen, it reminded me of Hitchcock. Not the movie in it's entirety... but these credit sequences alone. I thought this film was absolutely soaked in atmosphere and tension. From the constant pitch-black visuals, to the hard-hitting sound design. Sort of... Panic Room, meets Identity. I was actually really tensed up during the initial scares (the knocking and light flickering) - it didn't help that my own power flickered during this timeframe (and of course my DVD player decided that it wouldn't remember the spot I left off at...) and my parents walking around upstairs created a knocking-like effect. The masks worn reminded me of the new Halloween feature. I thought the pacing was good, and the short runtime (80 minutes) allowed for a tight film. No fluff. I had heard the ending was terrible, but it wasn't so bad. I expected it to end this way, like most films of this nature do. A better ending would have boosted the rank a digit or so higher, but I'm okay with this. It was a weak point, but not as bad as it was made out to be by some critics. So in the end... strong start, never-boring, tense, atmospheric, with a decline in the end and a slight turn from horror to action.

I NEED to see Pan's Labyrinth!
Vacancy was really good and definitely one of the better movies that I seen recently. It was better than Disturbia, Hills Have Eyes 2, 1408 and most of those newer horror/thriller movies. The plot was great and original! The camera views were so realistic! Those surveillance views make it feel so real. The movie will definitely creep you out. Go rent it!

The Mask of Satan AKA Black Sunday (1960)
A truly horrifying and brilliantly nostalgiac film- the first step in an unbelievably remarkable career. Bava did all the camerawork himself, and it shows; every shot, every angle, every pan is perfectly calculated to keep you in suspense.

Also had the worst actresses ever in a bobd film (the pilots... ick... ) and th emost arrogant (in real life and the movie) bond girl ever, Pussy Galore.
But dont get me wrong, Goldfinger is a classic and a favorite. It has the inspiration for Austin Powers' "Random Task"
which always made me wonder: when he gets fried, does Odd Job smell like hot dogs or bacon?
Oh yeah, I watched Bobby the other night. Pretty good, I am used to ensemble casts being the focus and not the plot, but it was well done. Even miss Lohan did a good job.

The Invisible Woman (1940)
Fantastic! The Invisible Man legacy has this great, unique twist of sci-fi horror and comedy, and this one is no exception. It was actually very funny, and the storyline, though light, was fun to follow. Highly recommended.

'Twas alright. I expected great, but it really wasn't. Kind of heartwarming, but will be easily forgotten.

Exorcist - The Version You've Never Seen
My eldest commented that he still hadn't seen this one, so we sat down and watched it this morning. Captain Howdy freaked him out just a little...it was priceless to see the reaction. I love watching these films with my son. He asks such wonderful questions and is so damned enthusiastic...and allows me to share my enthusiasm with him.
