this is gonna earn a few laughs ...
i watched Kate and Leopold last night.
I bought it in a garage sale for $2 last year and hadnt watched it ..
I like Hugh Jackman and time travel movies so i thought what the hell (despite the fact that i hate meg ryan)
as expected, JAckman was ok .. the story was a typical fish out of water romantic comedy ..although it was a bit restrained and managed to avoid a number of anticipated cliches.
it was ok .. just ok.
whats up with meg ryan .. her lips looked all messed up - like she has injections .. i dont remember them looking that weird before.

the last few movies i saw were as follows:
The Ghost (starring Barabara Steele. Limp 70's Italian "orror/Mystery". Was terminally boring)
Christmas Evil (aka, "You better watch out"). Oddly entertaining movie. Gets kudos for being the first screen appearance of Patricia Richardson (strong medicine, home improvement), having a completely gratuitous bush shot, and a guy in a santa suit publically kill 3 people with a hatchet
Currently watchin "28 Days Later", and i still love it.

also at the end I especially liked the way the interior of the ship was designed in the same style and look as the original star wars films, good continuity, especially the grey uniforms and caps from the originals... remember Peter Cushings uniform etc.

can agree, was way better than the previous prequals, almost on par with Star Wars (1977). I was a bit disapointed with some of the acting, especially Jackson, McGregor and Christensen.. suprising since jackson is renowned for some superb dialogue scenes, and McGregor was trying to emphasise his accent way too much, it was overdone.
On the whole though, was an enjoyable film, that tied up nicely with the previous three, and dispite any plot holes, was glad I went to see it, since it's been around 22 years since I've seen any starwars film on the big screen :)

since the beginning (but moreso in the last few movies) the dialogue was somewhat intentionally corny - to sound like the old serial cliffhangers that Star Wars was - in part - modelled after.
in the 1st couple of movies the leads were all played by hungry entheusiastic unknowns ... they put themselves into the roles with all they had and made the dialogue work.
now in the last few films, not only has it gotten worse .. largely in part due to Lucas's obvious lack of interest in his characters ... but you've got seasoned veteren actors saying these awful lines .. like Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor ... they are incapable of making these lines work..
We already know them as actors and what to expect from them .. you cant go backwards with guys like these ..
and Christiensen ... he's just a pitiful actor .. that's all there is to that.

I beg to differ. It was bad, real bad, but D&D did not have a single redeaming feature. Not being from M Night Shymalan is its only saving grace.
The village at least had some moments that would have stayed a little spooky had the movie ended differently.

I think that has a huge impact on whether its just a bad movie or a piece of shit:
expectations.
I love D&D the game, and have for over half my life. The game has so much potential, and their are some very talented writers making novels and such for it, then they hire some no talent retard hack to come in and write AND direct the movie, and he missed EVERYTHING.
Its like they got a copy of what Peter Jackson was doing with Lord of the Rings and said "We arent going to do ANy of this.)
the Dragons sucked.
the only halfway decent monster in the whole thing was the Beholder, and that had 2 seconds in the movie and was dumber than a bag of wet dog shit. For the record, in the game, they are capable of decimating large groups of people with very little effort. They can disintegrate things for fucks sake.....
The dwarf was tall....
The "Wizard".. Well, they couldnt make up their mind if she was an apprentice or a master wizard...
urgeok
05-25-2005, 05:59 AM
expectations does mean everything .. but i wasnt basing my expectations on the source material .. juts the competence of the director ..
if you didnt know shit about D & D 1/2 of what you saw wouldnt have bothered you ... this movie hit you on a personal level different from most peoples expectations from a movie..
if a test audience went to both movies - being told one is a fantasy and one is a horror .. i'll bet the village will take a huge beating over D & D

i like fantasy films but they are the most neglected..
it's really hard to find one thats well written enough to maintain the dignity of the cast.

I always thought the conan movies were a little brainless, but they are fun, which is basically the point for fantasy films.
I miss the old ones like Krull and Dragonslayer. No one seems to have any real passion for them (except for PJ, that is)
Film companies seem more interested in teeny bopper movies, cheap-ass horror flicks (cheap as in poorly written and executed), the occasional oscar-bound drama, and retarded action movies starring colin ferral
Ooops.. i almost forgot, an endless stream of remakes.

still, conan had quality actors ... people who could deliver lines in 'pseudo archaic' without sounding like complete morons.
thats the key to fantasy - as they always use that language and the no name ex-TV actors they normally cast in these films aren't skillful enough to make them work.
fantasy films are like the post apocalypse films that way - bad actors, cheap ass locations (outside in a desert or rocky terrain)
nominal effects ..and atrocious dialogue.
the good ones stand out miles above the rest - and if you take a good look at them it's obvious why..
better acting - a good film score - well written - tighter direction.
the problem is that because of the odd one good o ne ... a bunch of shitty low budget copycat productions immediately start up - pumping out their direct to video garbage with
'...better than Road Warrior' ... Sid Kidneys of the Melonville Weekly.... on the back cover to lend some bullshit credibility

here is a post from the imdb forums... its great :)
I love this movie. I really do. I saw it during its theatrical run and laughed so hard that I literally started crying at one point; so when it ended up on DVD, I had to own it. During the year-and-a-half that it has been in my DVD library, I've discovered an interesting fact: I...can't...stop...watching it.
Now, why do I enjoy this movie so much and publically piss all over the far superior "Star Wars" prequels? Well, for one thing, I don't have any emotional stock in "D&D." It's a terrible movie with two-dimensional characters, bad writing, horrible direction, and so many cliches that if you tried making it into a drinking game you'd surely die of alcohol poisoning. It's never more than it appears to be: a potato chip movie. Sure, it'll rot the brain--but only if you take it seriously (which, I'm afraid, the creative forces behind it did, much to their undoing).
"Star Wars," however, DOES mean something to me...So when I see one of THOSE films and find it's riddled with two-dimensional characters, bad writing, horrible direction and a multitude of cliches, I have to wonder whether or not we even need "Spaceballs" anymore. Anyway, I expect more of Mr. Lucas...but NOT of Courtney Solomon.
Solomon and his screenwriters sought to create a trilogy here to cash in on the "Star Wars" phenomenon, and because the anticipation for the first installment of LOTR was growing, a fantasy setting seemed an obvious choice. However, the allusions to LOTR are slight (probably because it had yet to roll off the block); but it's a near-perfect copy of Episode I with a few OT moments thrown in. Obviously, after the success of "Phantom Menace," it seemed an easy tomb to rob. The only thing that surprises me is how few critics (or fanboys) have mentioned it.
**************************************************
1)THE OPENING TEXT CRAWL
Anytime a fantasy/sci-fi movie opens with either a text or voice reading that "sets the stage," we're reminded of "Star Wars," which did it perfectly and without the pretentiousness that its imitators embraced. In "D&D," Bruce Payne supplies the narrative. It's "Star Wars" in every way, right down to the way the last sentence trails off ("But the evil mage Profion has other plans....).
2)THE YOUNG QUEEN
Now, I don't understand why I was the only one with a problem with the concept of Queen Amidala. First of all, in a monarchy, you don't ELECT a queen; and secondly, if you do, you vote for the candidate who ISN"T thirteen years old. Seriously, how do you LOSE an election like that...?
"D&D" aped this completely. She's young. She's idealistic. She's wooden. She wears god-awful dresses and gaudy head-pieces. Hell, if you want to get REALLY nit-picky about it, you could say that Solomon cast Thora Birch because of the strategically-placed moles on her face that suggest Amidala's "red dot" thing.
3)THE OLDER, TRUSTED ADVISOR WHO'S GONE BAD
Instead of Palpatine, we're treated to Profion, the worst role Jeremy Irons ever took (and his equally worst performance). Behind the scenes, Profion is plotting to overthrow the queen (referred to as "the empress" so as not to seem too blatant a rip-off), and is sowing seeds of discord within the council (senate) in order to overthrow her rule. His dirty work, however, is saved for his chief lieutenant...
4)THE DARK WARRIOR
Bruce Payne's character, Damodar, is equal parts Darth Vader and Darth Maul. He's a towering, sadistic, black-clad, slow-moving and unbelievably strong armour-clad warrior (Vader) who also happens to be bald-headed and painted with stupid-ass make-up (Maul, who didn't look stupid-ass at all). If this wasn't enough, listen for the thinly disguised echo of "The Imperial March" when he first appears at the magic school.
5)LUKE/HAN
In Ridley, we have a combination of the Luke and Han characters. He's a scoundrel who cares nothing for the "greater good," but in the end, is willing to turn aside from his love of money (he rejects a pile of easily obtainable gold) in favour of saving the kingdom from the evil Profion. Also we learn that he has latent magical abilities, stemming from his father (this was to be expanded upon in the sequels, when Damodar tells Ridley, "No--I am your father!").
6)JAR-JAR REDUX
Marlon Wayans. Good God, could the allusion be any more transparent. Let's see: he's a tall, gangly African-American stereotype spouting catch-phrases, bungling his way in and out of trouble, and generally getting on our *beep* nerves witrh his not-so-fun humour. Hell, he even has a hat that resembles a pair of goofy, Gungan-like ears. The only satisfaction is that he dies painfully.
7)THE SCOUNDREL AND THE GOOD GIRL
Like Leia and Han before them, Ridley and Marina come from two different worlds: he's an opportunistic creep and she's a member of the aristocrisy. At first they bitch at each other to work out the sexual tension; but in the end, fall in love, much to our great surprise.
8)THE MIND RAPE
Remember when Vader interrogated Leia, using the mind probe to extract the necessary information? In this movie, he uses a pair of penises that live in his ears.
9)LET'S SAVE THE GIRL FROM THE IMPENETRABLE FORTRESS!
Hey--it's the only way to steal back the much-sought-after "plans," right? And while we're there, let's have a main character die, allowing for our hero to scream "NOOOOO!" (while Milking A Giant Cow, no less).
10)CITIES IN TREES
At least the elf cities in LOTR looked elegant. The one here looks shockingly similar to the Ewok village.
11)THE SWORDFIGHT
When Ridley and Damodar have their duel, the clash of their blades creates a lightning effect, rendering the bad guy's sabre red and the good guy's sabre blue. Damodar is finally defeated after Ridley does a leap, sucker-slashes his foe in the midsection, who then falls over a steep drop. It all seemed vaguely familiar...
12)RESISTING THE DARK SIDE
Ridley is momentarily seduced by dark magic during the climax; but only by turning aside and embracing the light can he persevere. "No! I won't become...YOU!"
13)BORING POLITICS AND BAD CGI.
Come on: you know it's true.
14)SPLIT-SECOND ESCAPE CHOICES
When reaching a dead-end while pursued by baddies, our heroes take the smelliest possible escape route: through the sewers. To reach this destination, they must dive head-first down a chute where they land in a pool of cr@p (not unlike the Death Star trash compactor, or all of "Attack of the Clones").
15)OTHER BLATANT RIP-OFFS
Need I mention how Ridley keeps grinning and saying, "Trust me?" Or how he goes through the Thieves' Maze, a series of "riddles" straight out of all three "Indiana Jones" movies? Or about the scene where Marina, belly-down on the floor, is grasping for the scroll, which during the fight, is getting kicked around like a certain diamond in "The Temple of Doom?" Or how Ridley is stabbed in the shoulder and can be healed only by the King of the Elves? Or that scene where.....
You get the point. Watch this movie. Watch it RIGHT NOW. It might be a hodgepodge of rehashed ideas, but it's ten times more entertaining than these new "Star Wars" movies.

Ok, so I had two choices of what to do tonight: Go to a movie that I didnt wanna see, with a bunch of my friends; or sit on my ass infront of a computer, all alone. Not a tough choice.
And honestly, I was pleasently surprised. The penguins made the whole damn movie....they were really underused though. Just the oposite with the lemurs....they were great at first, but were WAY overused. The girafe was great, definatly the best of the main 4 animals. Plus, I confused my friends! There were awesome references to Planet of the Apes ad Twilight Zone that nobody there with me understood. I was sitting there, laughing my ass of...it was great.

Dennis Miller - Black and White - he's a bit smug - his references are only obscure if you're uneducated and live in a cave.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
fun movie - hadn't seen it since i was a kid ..
Chasing Sleep - small jeff daniels movie -
tight direction, good actors - not a bad movie at all

we have the 1st couple on laserdisc and the last one on vhs.. but his little buddy has a few more and we watched one there yesterday.
i hate don bluth .. his animation is shit, his characters are shit, his stories are shit.
he is credited with pulling disney back from the brink at one time (financially).. i think he completely sunk them artistically - until pixar came along.

Just watched Scarecrow (2003)- Your typical 'tortured teenager gets revenge' movie and Scarecrow Slayer (the sequel to Scarecrow)...These were dedicated to Dario Argento...I was surprised that Tony Todd was in the sequel....They weren't TOO bad...A bit cheesy (especially the sequel)...But, worth what I paid so, it's all good...

just got back from taking the wain to Madagascar.
chuckled a couple of times .. very uneven film.
other film references that only an adult would get - and it was heavy on dialogue at the beginning ... but the rest of it would only be funny to small kids ..
my wife and i didnt like it .. my kid didnt laugh - but he said he liked it ..
i wouldnt hire David Schwimmer to shovel my driveway.

King of the Zombies [1941]
I love these cheesy old b/w flicks. This is pretty good, the sterotype black guy from the era was hilarious at times, the bad guy was pretty plain, and the ending seemed rushed...but overall, I liked it!

The Rock is a pretty fun guy in the movies - he's one of those 'ya gotta like him' kind of guys (unlike Vin Deisel)
The cinematography was fantastic ... they took full advantage of the gorgeous landscapes.
Peter Berg directed it - I always liked him as an actor - he's even a better director.

I like The Rock, I find him very entertaining. And he was hilarious on Saturday Night Live. This is a guy that just doesn't take himself too seriously, which is a very good thing. The Rundown is a good movie, but I have still watched it way too much. I can recite dialogue along with the actors (gotta love the Tooth Fairy lines....LOL). The only other movie I can do that with is Jaws.
Last movie watched was Return to Me.

Memories Of Murder - police investigate and attempt to track down a Korean serial killer. Song Kang-Ho (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance) plays one of the lead characters. Very good film based on true events around 1986. Was the best selling asian crime film during 2003, can see why....I recommend it.
R3 Korean dvd image and sound quality was superb aswell, with a dts track.
