Cannibal Ferox (a.k.a. "Make them Die Slowly").

Didn't live up to the hype at all. It was slow, draggy, had extraneous plot points thrown in and it was almost mindnumbingly boring at many points. The sound was horribly mixed, and I had to keep turning the volume on my TV up and down the whole time to compensate. However, some of the effects were superb for its time and budget. It's one of those gorror movies you have to watch if you call yourself a gorehound...Sort of a rite-of-passage. ^^

A better sequel? Eh...the second one had some interesting points, but overall completely different feel, and didn't much like the storyline, definately nowhere near as good as the first, which is what I think at least partly inspired saw.
Haven't seen the third (prequel thing) cube ZERO yet, I've got enough interest to pick it up though.

You really thought the acting was above average? While I liked the character of Leaven, I couldn't say Nicole or any other cast member did an ABOVE average acting job. It's typical of the grade of movie this is.

I did really enjoy it, though. :)

PS: If you haven't already... watch House of 9. It's basically Cube, only in a house, and without traps. Okay, so maybe it's not exactly like Cube. It has the same pitch though; see how people react when they're trapped in a confined area.

I thought the ending for House of 9 was a step up from Cube's ending.

THE PREMISE
9 people are locked in a large mansion, and given instructions through an intercom. They must slowly kill one another, and the last one living wins the prize - one million euros. At first, they try to get along - but of course, there is a limit to human effort.

SPOIL SPOIL SPOIL
THE ENDING
One girl remains, and the front doors of the house open - she grabs the money and runs for the light ahead of her. But the light wasn't what she was expecting - instead, the light comes from a room with a dozen others just like her. Crouched, clutching their bags of money tightly. She won't be seeing the outside anytime soon.

The film is frustrating in that, the first really big action set piece is sooooooo good - I'm talking white-knuckle good - that the rest of the film feels like it's playing catch-up. ]

Daniel Craig is great.

The dialogue sounds good coming out of Craig's mouth, but everyone else falls flat, so I'm gonna blame the writing.

The Poker scenes are miserably boring...like I'm watching "Poker with the Stars"

...AND this is the bloodiest Bond yet.

I'm a sucker for these so I'm gonna say 7.5/10 as a whole... which by my scale falls between a good time and a great time at the movies:)

Werewolves On Wheels ~ This was actually a pretty good movie for an early 70's b biker/ horror flick. Complete with outlaw bike gang, satanic monks , a naked snake dance preformed by a hot biker mama, drugs, booze, brawls and gore. I was hoping for a gang of biker werewolves terrorizing the country side but didn't get that . Instead it's more of a satanic monk/ biker road trip w/ werewolfism as a symptom......er...movie ...7/10 .

I kind of liked it. The director always wanted to make it more like a living comic book he said, seemed to enhance that point. Now tony Scott's remake... I don't know if I'll dig that (sucka).

It always was like a living comic book to me. The added stuff just made that point TOO obvious. The remake will be way to serious....

I just watched Children of the Corn. Pretty average. I liked the short story a lot better.

The action was cool and the movie had enough going on to keep me interested, but I have to admit after 2 hours I was praying for an ending....it was the large Coke I drank talking. :o But overall I thought it was a kick ass movie.

Just watched Quest for Fire for the first time. I really liked it a lot. It was weird, and there was no dialogue to speak of, but the point came across clear all the same. Plaga Zombie: Mutant Zone

Well, I had this lined up on the top of my Netflix list before I even realized it was a sequel and unfortunately for me, Netflix does not carry the original so I might be out of luck. I'm sure if I had seen the orginal, things would have made a little more sense to me since this one sorta picks up right in the middle of a story, but more or less, I was able to piece together what was going on. Okay, now on with the review of the movie itself. For it's budget, it was fabulous. Plenty of gore and it didn't really look too cheesy either. Good humor, good acting (I think. It's always hard to tell with foreign language films.), mildly confusing plot (Probably because I never saw the original), and excellent characters.

Let me be perfectly clear. By no means is this film any kind of work of art and compared to most of the horror put out by studios, it's probably relatively lame, but when you factor in what is obviously a very minimal budget, it shines a whole new light on this film and allows you to appreciate it for it what it really is... A low budget, gory zombie movie. I enjoyed it.

The Bat

This was a great film. I firmly believe that if they had given it a better title it would be one of Vincent Price's most popular movies, but it's simply called The Bat so it probably gets overlooked quite a bit. Anyways, I liked it. Dark, twisty plot and good acting.

B

Last Woman on Earth

I also enjoyed this film quite a bit. It's rather slow moving, but the reason is because it's building the characters. Good acting & directing. I like how they never really explain what happened that killed off everyone on Earth too. Great anti-Hollywood ending.

The Fly. Such a great movie. It contains what is probably my all time favorite line in a horror film: when Brundle is in the final stages of his transformation, and Ronnie visits him for the last time. After he finishes rambling about insect politics, he delivers the ultimate: "I'll hurt you if you stay." That line is just so menacing, so utterly chilling. Perfect.

PhilnEdee
11-24-2006, 10:59 AM
how so ?

i liked the annoying guy who 'went to the bathroom'

i liked the couple minutes of 1st person shooter ..

but not enough to make it endearing .. just seemed flat and lifeless to me.

the Rock - who is usually very entertaining - was completely wasted...

I enjoyed parts of the film...hated the minutes of first person shooter...seemed utterly ridiculous. Def agree on the ROCK...total waste and he really had to force his character to life.

Family Portraits: A Trilogy of America

Three short films by Douglas Buck. I had already seen Cutting Moments, but I watched it again anyway. I don't know why I do these things to myself. Depressing, disgusting, you feel like you need to scrub with a belt sander after watching it. The mood Buck sets in all three films is just amazing. Home & Prologue don't quite have the effect that Cutting Moments does (which is a shame, because it's the first film on the DVD) but they're both good shorts that will still cut you to the core.

These films ARE NOT for everyone. I think they are very well done, and they really hit home on the atmosphere of disintigrated family on several levels. Very good films all three.

Dead Waters (aka Dark Waters)
I liked it, but recommend with extreme reservations. This is ONLY for those of you who enjoy slow, brooding flicks. The surprise is that the acting is actually pretty good.

The directing was maddening, I've never seen such cool lighting and framing combined with an awful sense of space. The images are really cool, but the sense of motion and ones place in this world is non-existant.

It could very well be a stylistic choice - it does create a sence of claustrophobia - but it reeks of a lack of technical skill in the director.

All in all I liked it... 6.8/10

Unless of course the Director was trying to create a sense of claustrophobia than of course it would speak of the high technical skill of the director. I actally liked the feel to it ,thought that it added some eeriness. Just my opinion.

So, the big plan of watching what you guys pick didn't exactly happen. Had a few friends come over, and I decided to go with what they wanted to watch.

Over the Hedge
The last few CGI flicks I watched (The Wild, Madagascar) haven't been that good. In fact, I turned off The Wild halfway through... just couldn't handle the overplayed "father and son" storyline (but I mentioned this before). Over the Hedge was actually quite good, and I can't say I didn't enjoy it. It was a very entertaining movie, and had some hillarious scenes in it. Great voice work too, Avril Lavigne was a bit of a suprise to see listed in the cast, well, alongside all those other well-recognized names; but her part was small, and she didn't do too bad. Wanda Sykes and Steven Carrell = amazing as always. Reccomended for fans of whacky animation.

Heartstopper
Ah, Canadian talent; in a B-grade movie nonetheless. Suprised they killed off Robert Englund so quickly (not actually a spoiler since it has little relavence to the plot). It was cheesy as hell (ripping out hearts, still beating; tattoos that move across flesh; soul-transferring; a whirlwind that sends people back to the underworld?), and had terrible effects (think something ALMOST as bad as drawn-in lightning effects), but it wasn't that bad. A fun little romp. No twists, it's doesn't redefine the genre, it's not something you NEED to see, but if you do decide to pick it up, it's not a complete waste. We certainly had a good time watching it, mainly laughing.

The killer actually gave me a slight chill, simply for his sheer presence. So overpowering, and the thought of being with him alone, what can you do? Nothing, your vistually screwed. His acting was terrible, and his LINES... OH GOD. Some biblical passages, with faux-poetry and terrible ryhming mixed all together.

Over the Hedge: B+
Heatstopper: C-

Good (looking) lead actress and a pretty scary looking ghost. Those were the plusses.

The rest is pretty much shit.

This movie contains, except for the lead actress, maybe the most annoying characters/actors i´ve ever seen. 10 minutes into the movie i wished them all dead. Did i get my wish fulfilled? I´m not telling. ;)

The story and storyline is something you´ve seen a thousand times before and with a 90 minutes running time the first 50 minutes "build-up" (Absolutely nothing happens) seems waaaay too long...

And considering the ghost lady is one of the scariest looking ghosts i´ve seen in an american horror movie this decade, it has disappointingly little screen time. I´m talking about 4-6 show-ups that lasts 4-6 seconds.

the ending of that movie is unreal. it's really hard to get people to commit time to the whole flick since it is quite dull at the onset.

I saw that movie when i was in high school and me and the guy that watched it just yelled "SHUNT SHUNT!!!" anytime we saw each other for the next week.

I watched "Code of Silence" with Chuck Norris this morning. It's not horror but it's fucking awesome anyways! :D

Watched "Narnia: Lion, Witch, Wardrobe" last night.
It's the first time I'd watched this, having never seen the series, or read the book of the same name (although, I think I actually may have read one of the sequels quite accidentally, years ago...I remember something about foxes, and a wardrobe)...it was actually a lot better than I was expecting.
Even as a child, when I heard the title being spoken of...I just thought it sounded really "kiddy", never bothered looking into it.
I don't know how the movie rates in comparison, but on its own, it sure felt like it had a lot of heart, I was watching it thinking "is it weird that I'm liking this as much as the LOTR stuff?" actually...this one felt more "right" than any of those did. Great music, simplistic but adequately enthralling storyline, and try as I might, the kids didn't manage to annoy me, and actually HAD independant characters, which was good...I mean the girls were girly, and the boys, boyish, but they weren't each carbon copies of the other...Also thought the guy that played the goatman (thomas?) did a pretty good job of it, fit right in.
Moments of darkness were there too...surprising...and the battle scenes were just great. I really am surprised at how much I liked this film, I would envy the child who's first taste of the series, was this film.

"Eastern Condors"...haven't really seen that many martial arts/war/action type films, but I have to say this one was really entertaining. I had the dubbing on so the whole thing sounded like a 70's cartoon, but, it was still fun.
A couple of my favourite martial arts folks were in this one too.
Simple plot, but it was cool...
That guy with the balloon cycle that ended up going along with them...whoever the fuck he was, he was KICKASS.
Anyone know the guy I'm talking about?

Anyone reccomend any other films of this type?

Caligula (1979)

First time I have seen this. Interesting film, with some big names such as John Geilgud, Peter O'Toole, Helen Mirren, Malcolm McDowell. I think a lot of interest comes from seeing such big name actors in a movie with hardcore scenes.

The acting is OK, but the editing leaves a bit to be desired. However the movie does create an excellent atmosphere of debauchery, intrigue, and madness that is rarely seen. The hardcore scenes add to this and as such I don't think can be considered merely pornographic.

Bone Sicknes.

my god-this was awesome.

put the gore from every low budget film ever made and condense it into one, you would have bone sickness. 8/10

Bone Sickness

Some of the effects were REALLY bad though, and the ending seemed like a quick, tacked on mish-mash of ideas. The audio was bad and I didn't care for the way it was shot. On the PLUS side, Mothman's right, there's a lot of good gore buried in here too and some of the ideas were pretty good but I'd only give it a 6/10.

After watching the special features I'll have to say 6.5 because in the bloopers a zombie walks up to a SWAT team member and takes his mic saying, "Send more SWAT guys.". Heh, funny stuff, I chuckled.

Christmas Evil :

The idea of a serial killer Santa in itself is pretty damn funny to me and is filled
w/ opportunities for dark demented violent fun. This movie should have sleighed

You can find them at e-bay stores for really cheap. The copy I bought was only $ 7.00 including s&h and it is a double feature. It also has Carnivore on the same disc. Granted it came in a slim DVD case and was transfered from what must have been a old projector style film, but it was good enough for me, still very watchable to say the least.

LOL, no it's a movie, not bad but kind of confusing and had a weird ending, the overview reads:

On January 11th, 1992, a series of strange events shook the world. Among these events was the mystery of the 7-year old school girl who brutally shot the men that murdered her parents.

Eighteen years later, Sara Tobias is still haunted by ghostly visions of her mother. She is obsessed with discovering the meaning of 11:11, as these were the numbers scratched in blood beside her mother's body.

With her only friend Raden for support, Sara is drifting through her troubled life. Things begin to change when three sudden and mysterious murders are then followed by a recurring wave of unnatural events.

Driven by fear and an inexplicable urgency, Sara is pushed towards the truth of the 11:11 prophecy.

As i said, it has an asian ghost story feel to it, if you didn't enjoy Pulse then i don't think you'll like this one much either

The most amazing thing about this.... urge has 10,000,000 dvd's in his collection and i've got one he's never heard of

Eraserhead

After it put me to sleep 3 times, I finally finished Eraserhead and I gotta say I thought it sucked! What a boring and pointless piece of crap! I hate watching a film and then feeling like I just wasted a couple hours of my life afterwards and that is how I feel about this one. It gave me nothing. I don't like movies that are weird just for the sake of being weird. There's no real gore, the story purposely makes no sense, and it just was not entertaining in the slightest. I hated it and it's heading to the bottom of my list where I keep Phantasm, Fulci and all the other over-rated films and directors so I remember not to watch them ever again.

D-

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Uwe Boll makes more entertaining movies than David Lynch does. Yikes!
