I liked the Condemned a lot (probably helped by the premiere atmosphere) and I don't expect the remake of Battle Royale to be as good a representation of of BR as interpreted by Hollywood.

1408: Director's Cut
Visually stunning. Some effective scares and scenes (most notably, the shaft-chaser, and the daughter-to-ashes.) And hey, I love the song "We've Only Just Begun". The countdown was effective, etc. Basically, everything scare-wise and visually was near perfect. Cusack was a let down in some aspects, his acting wasn't so stupendous as many would have you believe. For example, his 'shocked' look during the scene in which the post office is torn down was just ludicrous. I was told there was a mind-bending, amazing twist - but I must have missed it. Not a fan of Stephen King, so maybe it's why I didn't like the movie THAT much. It certainly isn't bad, but I wouldn't watch it again.

Videodrome

While the gore and FX were cool and the acting was top notch, I was confused with the plot of this movie. I don't know if I missed something, was tired or the movie wasn't supposed to make sense but after it ended, I was left scratching my head and wondering "What?"

It was cool, but not the best I've seen from Cronenberg.

I felt the same way.....I think I gave it an 8/10 a few pages back. The reason for the high score was most likely I was expecting shit.

I don't think Victor Crowley will become a horror icon like Freddy or Jason - he's simply too removed from humanity. I'm not talking Jason-like... but, like, I just didn't connect with him in any way possible. Perhaps it's the fact that he's undisguised, and looks like any mutant out of The Hills Have Eyes. That being said, I'm rooting for Leslie Vernon. The gore in this film is just INCREDIBLE. The deaths are amazing, my favourite being the mouth-opener on the female tourist. The effects are really well done, and look very realistic and sickening. I have a question though - does it really end that abruptly? I liked it, different... but it seemed to just cut out and I'm not sure if it should've.

The Edgar Allan Poe Collection

It's an uneven DVD of short films adapted from Poe's works.

Annabel Lee by George Higham is a stop motion puppetry freak-out. Beautifully wrought and loaded with symbology, it is the best of the bunch. The narration leaves a little to be desired.
8/10

The Raven by Peter Bradley is really cool looking and gives a very literal translation of the classic poem. The film is live action with eponymous bird rendered as a cardboard puppet. The acting is over the top, but I dig it.
7.5/10

The Tell Tale Heart by Alfonso Suarez feature the talents of Paul Naschy. Sadly this "interpretation" lacks the terror and narrative punch which the short story holds.

Well, when Dean Cain is the film's biggest star, that should tell ya something right off the bat. This was a pretty generic creature film about a giant prehistoric snake terrorising an underground Antarctic prison. There wasn't much gore, plot or quality acting, but there was plenty of bad CGI. All things considered, there's still some small level of cheesy entertainment value here, just not much of it.

How is that? We picked it up really cheap (which might give me my answer), but we haven't watched it yet, and I'm not sure when we will get to it.

If you enjoy classic horror with some cheese on top then I strongly suggest it. If you don't like bad transfers and are expecting a beautiful anamorphic picture you're out of luck. I enjoyed it.

Disturbia

The acting is fine and the suspense is good, but the plot is 100% unoriginal. This was a remake of Hitchcock's Rear Window that doesn't call itself a remake. I am not a fan of remade classics to begin with, but when it seems more like a cheap ripoff than a remake due to no credit being given to the original, it's somehow even less enjoyable.

Resident Evil: Extinction.

Just came back from watching it. The plot was a continuation from the events of the 2nd movie, and I must say Ali Larter fits Claire to a T. Milla is her usual self...made to look superhuman with her anorexic looks...while the supporting cast aren't bad. Some of the sequences are pretty original...its a decent entertainer.

The direction is okay, even when the first half tends to slightly drag a bit...it more than compensates for the rivetting latter part of the movie. All in all, not a bad sequel...and certainly a notch above number 2.

I give it a 06/10.

D-War aka Dragon Wars.

Hummmmm...where to start? The trailer and promos promised so MUCH, and I was so excited too, after hearing that it beat The Host's box office records...and the buildup and premise was good.

What went wrong, then...you might ask?

Where D-War failed, was the execution. The story falls out after the first 10 minutes, the acting is mediocre at best (with some characters gawking stupidly as if they didnt know what to do) and the direction is a BIG let-down.

If the director thought that the CGI sequences could redeem a bad movie, he was HELLA wrong. Its mouth-watering to imagine a huge-ass serpent wrapping itself around a 100-floor skyscraper...but wtf is it doing there in the first place? Even when the CGI is absolutely gorgeous, the overall movie falls flat because of the stupid scripting and lame direction.

Even kids wont like this one. Stay clear. I give it a 04/10, and I am being generous for its CGI.

Knocked Up

It's rare that a movie that gets THIS much hype actually lives up to it, but I was pleased to find that this really was one of the freshest, funniest movies in a while (Probably since Napoleon Dynomite). Funny story, good acting. My only complaint would be that a comedy over 2 hours long is pushing it, but it didn't seem to drag this film down any.

A-

Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer looked awesome and the special FX were great throughout, but this story suffered from a severe lack of logic. Galactus was changed from a giant planet devouring alien creature (in the comics) to a big cosmic dust storm, so that wasn't good. Without spoiling anything, the final method of defeating the bad guy didn't make any sense at all and the other incosistency was the power swapping. Every time power was swapped, it was swapped, except for the the last time when it wasn't swapped at all, it was just taken while the taker retained their own powers as well. Overall, this was alright, but there were too many inconsistencies in the plot.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Colon Movie Film for Theatres

I am a fan of the show, but trying to stretch a 12 minute show into an 86 minute movie is pushing it. It starts off very funny and then proceeds to become pretty much just like every episode. There's not really any plot and and the film tends to drag on. It's okay, but I'd recommend watching a couple 12 minute episodes instead. It'll be just as funny, but take up far less of your time.

I recently saw Death proof.... I liked it better than Planet terror, but thats just because I haven't seen a car chase like that in a long time and I loved it. I know it was slow and stuff, but the bad ass retaliation was just too much... It was divine. I can maybe agree with the quip about it being his worst... but that's still pretty damn good. Plus I loved all the girls in the movies, especially Zoe... And I liked how what's her name from Sin City was the backseat chick... acting all freaked out, it was grand

8/10

I'm a huge Russ Myer fan, I think if I wasn't I would have hated this movie...

Don't get me wrong, nothing spells grindhouse cinema like Faster Pussycat...Kill, Kill! I just felt like he got to wound up in making it a signature.
On that note, I actually did enjoy Death Proof...just not as much as Planet Terror.

And Posh...how have you already seen Planet Terror?

Capote ~ my second viewing, excellent performance by Hoffman, though sometimes the film itself drags in places.

The Rules of Attraction.

Did you like it? Far cry from American Psycho obviously, but I enjoyed it a bit.

It's actually a favorite of mine. A whole lot bleaker than American Psycho, imo, even though i love Christian Bale and he's completely off the hook in it. But I actually prefer this one.... and I know I'm probably alone on this. :p

Actually, I know a couple of people that prefer it. My brother thinks it's funnier and my cousin, not verbatim, but basically said the same thing you did.

''Bale made Psycho awesome dude, but Attraction is just way more raw man.'' My cousin is the only cajun hippie I've ever met.

Fun. Scary. Cusack owns the material. A great haunted house tale.
