you know, I liked this one too, but what got me was the "question the validity of your gods" angle to the story. Really odd tone and some rather frightening action sequences that scared my 3 year-old just enough for him to love the sensation of being scared.
I really like the way Miller isn't afraid to deal with death and scary themes in his kids' films - like the much darker (and a little better) Babe: Pig in the City

"Westworld"
A great early '70's sci-fi western. Richard Benjamin and James Brolin as tourists at a futuristic amusement park where you get to play cowboys and fight robot outlaws. Everything is great until the robots start acting out there roles for real.

Disney's The Black Hole. I thought it was "oh, okay I guess" when it first came out but I like it more and more. Funny how the robots looked so "cute" in 1979 and look more stylized than cute now. Back then people were pointing at the robot designs..."Look! Look! It's a Disney Studios film, all right. See how they couldn't resist putting cute robots in it?" But the cuteness just doesn't seem so harsh after the passage of twenty-five years or so. Dark story, at times very creepy in a subtle way that's underappreciated.

Thats what I thought until they started to explain the history...took a fast nosedive into a realm of plot holes, contrived twists and just flatout "bad"-ness.
Oh, and the part where they were trying to ripoff The Thing was stupid, too.

Species 3
Wow, this series really dropped the ball on this one. The original & sequel were pretty solid alien horror, but this one was just a jumbled clusterfuck of too many ideas thrown into a confusing plot. I was not entertained much at all & I guess I never expected to find myself missing Michael Madsen's presence in a film, but I did. This film was lacking in everything from acting quality & gore to a good story. The thing I found most confusing was that this film had multiple alien infants (Whereas the first 2 films pretty much stuck with 1) and because they reach adulthood within days, it was pretty tough to keep straight who was an alien and who was a human. I don't know... Terrible execution here.

"Slither" ...I guess it was an okey 80's monster movie tribute...but I didnt like the Zombie crossover...unnecessary to use Zombie elements in a monster movie..it could have been a fine homage to for example "The Hidden" but instead it fell between two chairs ...it tried too hard to be everything in one movie

The Black Dahlia. While I appreciate what de Palma was trying to do with his homage to film noir, in execution this film was terribly flawed. It was as if they tried to cram every element of the book into two hours, and it left the film a muddled mess. The main character's obsessive internal monologue was about the only high point here. And just let me say this: if there was ever a person who was miscast in the role of the femme fatale, it would be Hillary Swank in this film. She is a decent actress, but she was horribly miscast in this one. Avoid. Overall: 2/10

The Illusionist. I was quite pleasantly surprised by this one. The magic effects were amazing. Even though I knew that it was a movie, there was some small part of me that kept saying, "Cool! I wonder how they did that!" Edward Norton turns in his usual very strong performance (I really believe that he is one of the finest actors now living) and the rest of the cast does a wonderful job as well. Even though the ending is maybe a little too pat in tying up all the loose ends, this was a thouroughly enjoyable film. Overall: 8/10

I watched it with the wife, yes. But it wasn't bad, dark for a kids film and the Red Bull was badass. The old woman getting taken down by the Gryphon (almost as good as Rod's) was pretty intense for kids too.

The Big Trail (1930)
Breck Coleman (John Wayne) leads a wagon train of pioneers through Indian attack, storms, deserts, swollen rivers, down cliffs and so on while looking for the murder of a trapper and falling in love with Ruth.
For it's time , this was a true film epic and even now it still holds up pretty well. The only thing I find strange about this movie is seeing this young skinny 20 year old kid walking around and hearing John Wayne's voice coming out of his mouth. I guess we were all young once.
Now lets jump ahead 31 years to my next movie of the day:
The Comancheros (1961)
Texas Ranger Jake Cutter (John Wayne) arrests gambler Paul Regret, but soon finds himself teamed with his prisoner in an undercover effort to defeat a band of renegade arms merchants and thieves known as Comancheros
Very entertaining fun western adventure. Good cast lots of action.

Good, but not spectacular. Lynch, through digital device, has created some of his most surreal imagery yet. It's certainly thought-provoking and intricately confusing, but I can't help feeling like it may be a little too much so.
I will say that it utterly disturbed me, more than any film has done in quite awhile.
And by the way, I didn't meet David Lynch :( . My friend's dad thought he had the Saturday showing (w/ Lynch's appearance) but, alas, he had gotten Friday tickets. Still a fun experience, though.

Well, I didn't know what I was expecting with this one. I was never a huge fan of the original, but I've always thought the sequel was pretty good so I didn't know what I'd be getting in this 3rd installment. What I got was lots of gore, some really excellent continuity and what seemed like it will most likely be closure to the franchise. This was a pretty entertaining film (assuming you've seen the first two) and I think it wrapped up the trilogy better than I would have ever imagined them being able to do.
