HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1982). Probably, more than any other version, this shows just how precarious life could be in 1400's Paris (Dirt, Disease, Religious subterfuge). Leslie-Anne Down is gorgeous as Esmerelda and Derek Jacobi shines as the obsessed Priest, but it's really Quasimodo who is supposed to be the main subject of interest and sadly, Anthony Hopkins just doesn't cut it. Makeup isn't all that great and it just seems He is rehashing Charles Laughton's 1939 characterization. Also, a Suck Ass ending.
Worth a look if You like the story, but the Laughton version is the one to check out. Small roles by Robert Powell (ASYLUM) and Kenny Baker *R2D2 himself!). **1/2

I read a little review of the film, and they suggested the film was an effective anti-war statement. What do ya think?

FRIGHT NIGHT (1985). Watched this yesterday and all of this recent talk of it! Still think this is a fantastic film and one I can watch constantly. The sequel was alright, but nothing spectacular and maybe it's just the Curmudgeon in me, but could not abide the 2010 (?) remake.
Fond memories of seeing this the first time...had gotten married a few months back and living with In-Laws waiting for Mobile home to be ready. Thought it would be a week at most, but turned out to be two very long months::sad::, but that's another story.
Saw it at a matinee and pretty full house. We all were enjoying it, with many laughs, but the "Strangers in the Night" moment all but brought the house down and I knew I would really like this.
One of my first VHS and love the DVD, but really wish there was a commentary on it-sure it would be interesting.
Still and always *****

Well, without giving too much of the plot away, i guess its really how the war affected one family. At some points though, the military was reflected in a positive light.

Nekromantik (1987)
I.M.D.B. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093608/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)
A street sweeper who cleans up after grisly accidents brings home a full corpse for him and his wife to enjoy sexually, but is dismayed to see that his wife prefers the corpse over him.

Not much to say about it really. Dumb, low budget movie. Only real appeal is the ridiculousness of it.

When I watched this movie, I wished the young hero would change his facial expression once in a while. He goes through the whole movie looking like he has a mild headache.

I also thought "Even if the vampire wins the battle, hasn't he kind of blown his cover in this town?"

THE SEVERED ARM (1973). A group of friends go spelunking and have to resort to drastic measures for survival after a cave in and then the Karmic effects afterwards. Obviously low budget (with many of the interiors having a Motel 6 vibe) with a too languid pace, there are a few genuinely frightening moments, a creepy synth score and a pretty damn fine ending.
Cast includes Deborah Walley (many AIP Beach movies, believe this was her last film), Paul Carr (TV Star Trek, THE BAT PEOPLE), John Crawford (TV Star Trek, THE ENFORCER) and Marvin Kaplan (who did some writing for THE ADDAMS FAMILY). ***

VAMPIRE CIRCUS (1972). Lots of praise for this late Hammer offering, but I found it extremely tedious throughout despite decent nudity, lots of blood, huge fangs and an off the charts Body count. Some good moments, to be sure, but lowering budgets over the years took their toll. **

The reason you didn't notice the guy's expression in Fright Night is because there is nothing to notice. The guy doesn't emote at all.

I kind of wish that my local cable provider would include in the pay-per-view movies the original sequel to Fright Night, the one where the villainess is supposed to be the sister of the vampire in the first vampire. She's my type.

"The great strength of the vampire is that people will not believe in him." Edward van Sloan as Van Helsing in Dracula. I am quoting from memory; I know I probably didn't get it right.

I haven't exactly watched this lately but I was just remembering how much I liked the original Pumpkinhead (I hope I didn't list it already).

It was a really dark movie and the special effects for the monster were amazing. I also liked the evil old witch who brought the monster to life after bargaining with the guy who wanted revenge for his son's death, and basically ended up selling his soul to Hell in the process.

I wonder where the movie was set? It kind of reminded me of the mountains up in North Georgia but I'm not sure. I know I definitely detected a southern accent in the characters.

BASKET CASE rocks!!!!!

THE UNSEEN (1980)OK little flick that has quite a seedy aspect to it, but it is Danny Steinman directing. Kind of neat to see two Rock wives (sisters in the film) walking together, Barbara Bach (Ringo Starr) and Karen Lamm (Bobby Lamm of Chicago and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys-twice. **1/2

I like the style... very 70's TV-movie. i thought the first two stories were fairly run of the mill... in a horror TV anthology way (like HBO the Hitchiker or Tales of the Crypt series). The real strike is the third story "Amelia", a true horror classic. I think the first two stories might add to setting up the mood for the third (although the stories are not related) but "Amelia" still stands alone well.

The Horror of Flashdance (1983)
6/10

The characters are rather lifeless, shallow, dull, caricatures, and not played very well, if it were even possible (to play them well). The plot is an 18-year-old welder and parttime exotic dancer who pines to get into the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance and Repertory. She apparently has no family either.

The adorable Jennifer Beals plays the lead, where she always wears a warm smile, and she can certainly dance.

The kick of Flashdance are the music and dance performances, most of which are done quite well. As music videos they're nifty. There's some fine songs in the film, and on the soundtrack, including Maniac (a personal fav) and What A Feeling. Many of the other songs are performed with plenty of lively gusto, vocals and instrumentation, fairly innovative in many respects including "Manhunt", "He's a Dream" and "Romeo"; with "Imagination" performed by Laura Brannigan probably being the most successful musically.

The soundtrack sold very well, more than 20 million copies worldwide. And despite deservedly poor reviews, the film did well at the boxoffice.

I quite liked her myself...always quirky. She is very good in 1970's FIVE EASY PIECES.

SUDDEN IMPACT (1983)Fourth entry in the Dirty Harry series is quite violent, but also has some incredibly funny moments-particularly the Elevator scene. For genre fans, look for Nancy Parsons (MOTEL HELL and PORKY'S) and Mara Corday (TARANTULA, THE BLACK SCORPION, THE GIANT CLAW and THE BLACK CASTLE). Also some of the hammiest acting imaginable from Paul Drake and Audrie J Neenan who sets the film's events in motion and later was a Judge in LAW AND ORDER SVU. ***1/2

Is that the one with Louis Jourdan? Once upon a time he played good guys, then he switched to playing good guys.

Speaking of Russ Meyer, my sister's favorite quotation from that movie is:

"We don't try things, we just do them!"

The cable stations seemed to be showing nothing but horror movies, and I joked "Even the SyFy channel is getting into the act, with A Giant Killer Shark for Christmas."

Then, this showed up in the listings:

The twelve disasters of Christmas.

I suppose having nuns wear makeup in a horror movie is no worse then women in movies who are completely made up before getting out of bed in the morning.

I meant to type "bad guys" , instead of good guys, in that Louis Jourdan post. Obviously.

And when I typed that the cable was showing nothing but horror movies, I meant Christmas movies. Either I have finger trouble or mind trouble.

Thank goodness for imdb.com. I remember seeing this movie on tv, but I couldn't remember the title: Fear No Evil. Lynda Day George plays a woman who is haunted by a kind of vampiric demon, who gets to her via her husband's recent death and a kind of magic mirror. Jourdan is the supernatural expert who saves the day.

Thinking of experts on the supernatural in movies, I thought of a movie called Daughter of the Mind, which is refreshing because it takes the skeptical attitude towards ghosts and stuff. I remember that John Carradine plays the proprietor of a sort of museum of fraudulent mediums. He encourages the hero to persist with his investigation. "Wherever there's a spook, there's an operator." I think he meant that whenever there's a ghostly manifestation that's actually visible, there is some fraudulent guy producing it.

You've summed it up rather well...sreange little flick.

YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES (1985). Really good imaging of how Holmes and Watson met and how they acquired the tics of their personalities. Nicholas Rowe and Alan Cox are well cast and certainly have the characteristics needed. Great sets of Victorian London and I believe the first use of CGI in a film. Only beef I can think of is there are too many of Executive Producer Steven Speilberg touches, at times making this almost into a Indiana Jones story. Still worth seeing and too bad this didn't do so well..I certainly would have liked a few more of these. ***1/2

I don't even remember this film. Pretty sure I never saw it. Guess it was just released at a bad time. I'm not sure I like the mixing of Sherlock Holmes with the supernatural, I mean unless he's unmasking the fakery of it. Otherwise Holmes seems to lose his identity.

They Live (1988)
7/10

It's kind of a Tic-tac candy version of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. You get the initial minty blast, but because there's not much there, you might as well chew it quick and move on with your fresher breath. If you see the film's trailer, you've seen all you need from the entire film. There's enough material for a very cool music video (I read Green Day made a homage video with their song "Back in the USA").

Set in the 1980s, a construction drifter looking for work and place to stay discovers glasses that allows him to see hidden messages in consumer media messages and to see the otherworldly controlling message authors among us. Writer/Director Carpenter says the film "is about yuppies and unrestrained capitalism". The film is based on the 1963 short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" by Ray Nelson.

Carpenter uses a simple black and white technique when looking through the glasses, and the special effects and imagery right out of the 1950's sci-fi films which are quite effective and even scary. However after the reveal there's is no further plot or character development, and instead the hero just starts shooting everything, as the film coasts in a campy and rowdy trot to the end. It's too bad Carpenter didn't go more towards the depth of 'The Thing' instead of more towards 'Assault on Precinct 13'.

The film spent two weeks in the top 10, making $13 mil on a $1 mil budget, but ticket sales quickly vanished. As Starlog magazine wrote in 1988, "Carpenter is on record as attributing the film's initial commercial failure to the hypothesis that those 'who go to the movies in vast numbers these days don't want to be enlightened'"; which I would have to consider the pot calling the kettle black.

The power was off at the asylum. That's why all the patients were out in the rain wandering the grounds. The doors were all unlocked. I would assume the phones were cut also and Michael stole their car. Loomis had to wait til he could get to a phone booth. I could be morphing them all together but pretty sure this happened in the first one.

Yeah you're right. I guess I missed the part about the power being out. I wonder where he got that second car from though because I saw the scene where he called from the phone booth where coincidentally the dead tow truck driver laid. it was just something I never really thought of before I mean I have watched this movie more than any other horror movie in my life but it never occurred to me until now why he waited so Long to contact anyone considering the nurse probably needed medical attention.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
4/10

As small town factory is selling Halloween masks to kids who are to put on the masks as they watch a special Halloween give-a-way on TV, a young woman and her befriended Dr try to discover why her father was murdered by a strange man in a suit.

A lot of sneaking around, laying low, and running around again, but the chills and suspense are far and few inbetween. I agree with Roger Ebert who said Season of the Witch is a collage of pieces of much better films. Even when the antagonist Conal Cochran, the evil factory owner (played well by Dan O'Herlihy) gives the big reveal speech, it comes up lacking in coherence and completeness. We never find out what Cochran gets out of doing what he's doing. I did like the premise and its metaphorical commentary, but wasn't the film producers doing exactly what the film seems to condemn? Film has a 25% rotten rating Audience Score of over 25k votes at Rotten Tomatoes.com.

E.T. (1982). Haven't seen this in forever, but still finds it holds up very well and still can bring on the old waterworks, even to a cranky curmudgeon like myself. Dee Wallace is lovely and quite appealing as the single Mom trying to hold it together and it's hard to believe Drew Barrymore was once so young and unsullied-mean, I know. But hopefully, she will conquer any Demons and stay healthy. *****

Night of the Comets (1984)
7/10

Two teen sisters wake up to find virtually all humans vaporized by comets. They search for other survivors, but might not be happy with who, or what, they find.

The acting, dialogue and sentimentality are quite good in this. The wide angle shots of empty big Los Angeles streets are impressive and impactful. The way the story plays out, especially the last third is nothing original or particularly exciting.

Fuck Me Running/10

Synopsis:
An old woman coughs up what she believes to be a tumor whilst watching the local trash evangelist on t.v., naturally she thinks it’s a miracle and tosses it in the garbage. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. That night, while her 30yr old teenage son, Cody, sleeps. The bloody lung cookie gains sentience ( also teeth ) and crawls it’s way into his mouth, slowly taking control of him and multiplying and needing to feed, ultimately driving him to go on the best homicidal rampage a $6.32 shot on shiteo budget can afford. Hallelujah!

Oh Jesus, lol::shocked::
The funny thing is, I’m pretty sure I rented this from a Ma and Pa video store back in the late 80s, because this isn’t the kinda flick you’re likely to forget. From the cringe worthy dubbing, excessive same-ing, gratuitous and ultra low budget blood and effects, non existent character development, and pants-on-head plot, ( coupled with absofuckinglutely stellar performances, lemme tell ya ) The Abomination is one of the very best, brick camera lensed crapfests the bowels of the genre has to offer. Simultaneously worse than any Violent Shits, or Axe’Ems, or Wood Chipper Massacres (... Well, maybe not that one.), while managing to be infinitely more entertaining. This movie is absolute nonsense, and it’s fucking hilarious.

A guy having his head chainsawed off, then watching his neck spew creamed corn for five minutes, is one of two standout highlights featured in this grainy pile. The other being the aforementioned televangelist sitting down to take the loudest ADR’d dump in history ( think Harry from Dumb and Dumber caliber ), only to have his toilet morph into one of the titular creatures, which eats him alive mid shit.
https://media.giphy.com/media/8zioxuulSd1h6/giphy.gif
Bottom Line: If you’re lookin’ for some Z grade crap, look no further. We’re talkin’ Manos with gore and puppets level stuff here. So worth it!

FRIDAY, THE 13th (1980). Watching this again, while there are a lot of limitations in here, I feel it has aged better than many of its comtempories from that same era, including HALLOWEEN. H is very well done, certainly the "Better" film, but while it scared me on release in 1978 (First R movie I went to myself), it's now more subdued with more supernatural elements (Unstoppable Myers) while I find F13 more realistic and scarier.
While the sequels have their moments, most of them are dreadful and only a fast forward helps to get to the good stuff (An inventive moment like Jason's resurrection in F13 6 or a gorgeous fame like Debisue Voorhees::love:: in F13 5..the sequels are also full of stock characters like the rutting teens and the "Goof" that really hastened the decline of the series. "Ned" in this one is annoying, to be sure, but no means, really, about him, he's just trying to impress Brenda and the teens in here having sex (Jack/Marcie) are in a relationship.
Whatever faults it has, still has those amazing Savini FX, better than average photography, a memorable music score and also one of the best Psychos ever in film. This film, and Betsy Palmer in particular, scared the Bejesus out of me when I first saw it, really cutting edge. Have met Betsy, Robbi Morgan and Adrienne King at cons and all were nice as could be, which also helps me still enjoy the film. ****

How can a brain take over my brain through the tv, when the tv has already taken over my brain?
That topic makes me think of the sf short story The Twonky, by Arch Oboler (Lights Out). In this story a guy who has sent for a tv gets a tv from some other planet, which does weird things.
I guess tv was new enough in the 1950s for people to be afraid of what it would do. Aren't we still?

REVENGE OF THE NERDS (1984). Like many comedy films of the period, there is some tedium here, but with enough laughs to keep you interested. I agree with Danny Peary that the most enjoyment comes from hearing Robert Carradine's "Horsey laugh". Bernie Casey was cool in here and hard to believe John Goodman was so thin before ROSANNE. ***

He was horrible. He was very soft-spoken which didnt suit the part at all and he constantly smoked, even in libraries, chasing people etc. He actually did shortly play a Santa. ::stick out tongue::

BLAME IT ON RIO (1984). Another film that only could have been made in the 80's. There are some really funny scenes, lovely photography and Michael Caine/Joseph Bologna play off each other very well. However, with a few decades later and having a daughter myself, the main plot line gets this/close to being offensive; maybe they figured it was the precocious scheming teenage girl setting up the situation, it would be OK. Michael Caine is likable as the befuddled geezer who is truly in over his head. Michelle Johnson, in her first film (she did others like DEATH BECOMES HER and was really good in "Split Second" from the TALES FROM THE CRYPT series) is simply a Stone Cold Goddess...all I can really think of is the line in AC/DC's "Touch Too Much"..."She had the face of an Angel, Smiling with Sin, the body of Venus with Arms" that does her justice. My wife and I met her this April at CHILLER...very funny, still looks good and quite nice. ***

Well said, despite indecent subject matter, it does imbue every character with humanity. It digs into the why and inner conflict, and although titillating and sometimes glib (and I read engages in slapstick, which I don't recall), it's a morality play, though likely an insincere one. Not surprisingly, I read this is based on a 70's French film.

"This could only have been made in the 80's", except when it was made and glorified by Hollywood and critics in the 1999 film 'American Beauty', winning Best Picture. Been a long time since I saw either, but I read both films indicate the young lady is 17. Obviously, AB is a broader story.

Well said, Sculpt. Thought AB was kind of depressing, although it's the more "important" film, winning the Oscars. Been awhile since I've seen it and do remember Mean Survari was 17 and coquettish, but Kevin Spacey was doing more of the pursuing, in a nebbish sort of way, whereas Michael Caine is the Bunny Rabbit in Michelle's headlights::smile::.

The Blob. A fun rollercoaster ride that delivers what it promises. Makes you want to watch the original and the upcoming remake.

If you get a chance to (re)watch it, keep your eyes on the cast and the stuff they went on to do: Saw, The Walking Dead, Entourage, ER,... A lot of talent there.

Who from The Blob is on The Walking Dead? I took a peek at the cast, but nothing jumps out at me.

Shawnee Smith was the best part of The Blob. Not bad. Had some good segments. Wasn't happy with the ending, rather safe, obvious and cliche.

If a meteorite lands in your yard, and it has slime oozing out of it, STAY AWAY. I would bit an upside-down garbage can over it and call the bomb squad.

Actually, what the Blob did to people is not quite as gruesome as what happened to the people in Lovecraft's "The colour out of space." I wonder if that was ever made into a movie?

DAY OF THE DEAD (1985). As a big Romero Zombie fan (NIGHT and DAWN are in my top 10), read the FANGORIA articles before DAY's release and was at the theater the third day it was out, Recall the ushers having conniptions keeping underage kids out of the theater::big grin::!
While I thought it had great Savini FX and a barnstormer of an opening, just was not that impressed overall..the film just did not feel complete.
A couple of years later, saw a VHS rental of it for $1 and after a couple of viewings, did not think it was so bad and by the fourth viewing,I really felt that this was a pretty good little film. News travelled slower in those days and after reading about George's tribulations making it, may affection went up for it.
Although I think NIGHT and DAWN are better (Similar to the original Star Wars trilogy), enjoy this one very much. Savini's work is boffo and some good performances here, particularly by Joe Pilato, whose Rhoades is SUCH a asshole that he's almost likable.
Have met many Romero people at Conventions and for the most part, ALL of them were great. Joe is probably the most fun as He stays "In Character", but truly engaging and cool sense of humor. ****

Day of the Dead is pretty fascinating, it keeps your interest, has some genuine intrigue and suspense going on within the compound group. Horror-wise, we get a glimpse with the Dr's more Savini inspired anatomical experimentations. A finely written scene in John's cozy dwelling, between Sarah and John (the rasta helo pilot), suggesting their research is folly. There's a lot of unexpected subjects in Day, which is good because the long mall stretch in Dawn was completely played out. Some critics bash the 'over acting' acting and others the lengthy verbal fighting, but I'm not sure they really would have wanted more of the same if they got it.

ATTACK OF THE PHANTOMS (1979). By 1978, KISS was IT for Me. Loved Alice Cooper Group, Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, The Runaways, Aerosmith, etc, but NO ONE got my blood pumping like they did. Had four full scrapbooks, posters all over the bedroom, every album, the Bubble Gum cards and God only knows what else.If anything, this mania made me more industrious, working whatever odd job I could supplement my allowance with to afford this stuff.
VERY disappointed by the movie when we saw in in Oct 1978...even at 16, felt it was awfully juvenile and stupid. Even more annoyed was one of the Movie Tie In magazines listed the songs that would be performed and really, only "I Stole Your Love" sounds live and pretty good too.
AOTP is inside KISSOLOGY #2 and while it has some music from the Solo albums instead of the canned TV music, still awful script, acting and it's embarrassing to be able to see stunt doubles for Ace and Peter, even with the makeup on. certain charm and definitely of the period, but just a Stinkbomb overall. For a more entertaining view, watch THE TOMORROW SHOW 10/31/79 where an inebriated Ace steals the proceedings, much to Gene's very obvious displeasure. *

I watched Attack of the Phantoms on TV during their craze. I was young enough to sort of appreciate the superhero powers of the Kiss members. I'd take a guess only kids would have appreciated it a little bit. There was a lot of silly television on at the time. Watch an ep of Six Million Dollar Man or Wonder Woman, it's hard to believe adults watched some of this stuff. Not that there weren't some good Bionic Man eps, but I watched a little as an adult, and it's surprising.

DELIVERANCE (1972)>>>>>>>>>>SPOLIERS>>>>>>>>>>>

Four friends (one is a Macho survivalist, the other three much less so) take a Canoe trip down a wild river that will dammed soon. Their weekend jaunt quickly becomes a nightmare as they have to battle unforgiving Mother Nature and a couple of Mountain Men looking for Love in all the wrong places, literally and figuratively.
Despite a lot of copying by many films, this has held up remarkably well, with great performances by Burt Reynolds (never better), Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty in one of his first films and what must have been a difficult shoot to say the least (the jury's still out on Jon Voight). And much Kudos to Bill McKinney and Herbert "Cowboy" Cowards for being two of the most frightening screen villains EVER.
Back in the early 2000's when there was remake after remake coming out, was sure this would have one of them. If it had been done, think Ryan Reynolds (Lewis), Jeremy Renner (Ed),the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman ( Bobby-he definitely would have had the balls to play this to the hilt) and Mark Wahlberg as Drew. For the villains, Sam Rockwell (especially after THE GREEN MILE) and maybe Steve Buscemi, kind of stuck for the "Toothless" man. ****1/2

LOL Good casting choices, Frye!

The film has it's own odd deliberate pace, as lots of 70's films do, you don't know what's coming when or how. It's fairly adventurous and exciting.

INVASION OF THE BEE GIRLS (1973). Quite silly exploitation fare with William Smith (who was in a lot of these type films) plays a Detective investigating a company involved in some mysterious goings on, aided by Victoria Vetri (ROSEMARY'S BABY, WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH and 1968 PLAYBOY Playmate of the Year).
Seems many of the deaths in the town, all of prominent members, died of..shallWe say, Sexual exhaustion::cool::
Lots of nudity and I guess if SE was the way You had to go, there are worse ways to depart the Earth. As said, pretty cheesy, but it's fun and definitely different from a lot of films of the period. ***

What an excellent film that is! Truly an all time classic

STRAW DOGS (1971). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

For most of its running time, SD appears to be a character study. One thing fo sure, these are not characters I would want to be around. Dustin Hoffman plays an incredibly smug milquetoast who has left America to live in his new wife's English village. Said wife (played by Susan George who is very good here) is quite the flirtatious type with many of old boyfriends/admirers who remember here and within ten minutes You can see how incredibly mismatched these two are. It doesn't help that the majority of the villagers are thuggish drunken louts.
You will need some patience, but stick with it and the last third of the film really pays off and I think is quite frightening-even the first time I saw it on regular late night TV with expected cuts. This drew lots of criticism on its release for the violence, which is quite extreme, even for Sam Peckinpah whose films were usually full of it. It may not be your cup of tea, but film is worth seeing. ****

Arnold and Rae Dawn Chong have a great chemistry together and while I normally am not crazy about sequels, would not have minded a couple more of these. Arnold wasn't interested in the one that was planned, so with some story tweaking, it became DIE HARD.

SWEET SUGAR (1972). Considerd the ultimate Women in Prison (WIP) film (although 1982's CHAINED HEAT might give it some serious competition), Phyllis Davis is busted for possession/prostitution and takes the offer to serve 2 years on a Sugar Cane plantation instead of a lenghthy prison term. You can probably guess what will happen in the film before it even does!
Not great by any stretch, but OK for what is and the late PD ( who was also in BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, TERMINAL ISLAND-could also be considered a partial WIP- TV's LOVE AMERICAN STYLE and a steady gig on VEGAS) is jaw droppingly lovely, although she always looks perfectly clean throughout the film. **1/2
