Harry Brown (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1289406/) (2009)

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/9185/harrybrownr.jpg

Michale Caine is Harry Brown, the lone pensioner who becomes a vigilante & determined to avenge the brutal murder of his old mate at the hands of a bunch of local scum who terrorize the neighborhood. A fine addition to the old tough guys fighting back movies like Death Wish or recent Gran Torino with a dark & bleak tone overall.

A group of friends on vacation decide to venture onto a trail high up in the mountains that has been closed for repairs. The climb proves more perilous than planned, especially as they soon realize that they are not alone. The adventure turns into a nightmare.

A French thriller. Though nothing new but well made & enjoyable.

At the back of my mind I always wanted to check this out - I loved the few Bartel films I've seen and this sounded interesting...I was very so suprised by how amazing it was...

Bad girl Cheryl runs after thieving from friends to hideout in a weird old hotel run by her Aunt. The place is a freak show of strange characters - alkies, pervie Priests and porno photographers and Cherly fits right in..

Played way straighter than I expected from Bartel and avoids (most of the time) to rely on camp laughs. Great acting (from the main cast) and an amazing location make this an excellent dark off beat 'thriller'...

This sounds awesome.

Fighter (2007). More of a drama than a martial arts flick, i thought that it was well done in all aspects. The common complaint is that it was made in the shadow of other movies and really nothing new to offer. Whatever. i found the confilcts of the main character to be painfully believable and difficult; caught between two worlds with the potential of fitting into neither, the heroine does her best to juggle her personal desires with her cultural obligations, with the result disasterous nonetheless. Tending towards Hollywood expectations at times, the story tended to veer away from most movie cliches at the last minute. i thought the story was rather solid. The acting was competant, the direction good, and the score a little goofy but hard to comment upon as this is a Danish flick. The running scenes were particularly powerful depiction of our fighters struggles with contradiction and conflict, and i thought the daydream sequences to be revealing as to what was actually troubling our heroine. Either way, what threatened to be a typical teen coming of age flick turned out to be much more, at least IMHO. Ashe.

The Tracy Fragments (aka: "my girlfriend made me watch it, I swear")...

It was a cool movie, I enjoyed Ellen Page going apeshit near the end, it never really reached a resolution but you can make your own assumptions based upon how nuts the character actually is. The weird camera and split scenes bugged but actually thinking about what Tracy is going through in her weird twisted mind, her conception of time made me appreciate the style so much more.
I recommend not watching it with your significant other if you plan on having sex after.

Dont let that cover fool you. This film is one of the most difficult films you will ever watch in your life. It is so brutal, unflinching and hard-hitting that you will have a difficult time bringing yourself back to the screen to continue watching it. The direction, performances and pacing are absolutely top-notch. This one ranks up there with one of the best ever made.

Beware though, it will rub a lot of people the wrong way. If you have a pretty open mind, be sure to watch this. And yeah, forget about re-watching this one, cuz you will be reeling under the invisible sledgehammer this one will deliver to your stomach and brains, long after the end credits are over.

The Uninvited - A solid remake of the Korean movie A Tale of Two Sisters, though the original is definitely superior (and scarier).

Halloween II (2009)

http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/5286/halloween22.jpg

It already happened with Paranormal Activity and now Halloween 2! The thing is here lately the dvd of both the films came with non-theatrical ending! PA released here with the "Original ending" and few days back H2 hits the dvd store with alternate ending only. Thanks to blood-disgusting.com for notifying that the version I saw last night wasn't the original one which most of you have seen in the theater. And then thanks to youtube, where I just finally saw the theatrical one.

Anyway, I liked both the ending but I think alternate was the better one. **Spoilers about the alternate ending**During the film's finale outside the shade, Micheal Myers tears his mask off revealing his entire face (beard and all). He screams & says his first word of his entire adulthood to Dr. Loomis, "Die!" before he stabs Dr. Loomis. Then police shot him down and Angel Myers came out & made an attempt to stab Dr. Loomis by herself but she got shot too and in background a slow & fine version of LOVE HURTS starts. The rest are the same like in the theatrical one.**Spoilers end**.

Now, though I have said it before but like to repeat it here...years back just after the moment it was declared that Rob Zombie going to be the director of the remake of HALLOWEEN then I think every reasonable, thoughtful & open minded horror fans accepted the fact that this is going to be totally different treat than whatever they got from other sequel directors of original series and specially going to have some different approaches in many aspects than Carpenter version either in good or bad way. So when the director of the macabre violent films like House of 1000 Corpses & The Devil's Rejects takes this kinda project into his own hand then eventually he/she supposed to fail most of the “expectations” in a great deal of disrespect. And I said before that as a remake that was unnecessary but as a RZ film..it’s a masterpiece! But after seeing the remake again lately and H2 last night, I think Zombie did his best within his caliber & regarding his ways of making a film. I like to appreciate his own efforts & thoughts for the Michael Myers Legacy and the way he put it all together in. Though it’s flawed, it was sad & difficult to see that screwed portrayal of Dr. Loomis character and nevertheless it’s almost an exact 2 hour long feature (!), but it’s gorgeously gruesome, nasty in a cool way and darkly a long awaited dream for hardcore slasher fans.

Zombies Halloween 2.
Pretty decent though I found the end a tad confusing in what it was trying to symbolise. I like the opposite about this than I liked about the first one.
In the first, I loved the scenes where Myers was growing up/instituionalised but from the point he broke out I found it rather generic and boring.
In this one I felt the "young Myers" scenes weren't as good (nor was the kid), yet the present-time scenes were great.

Probably overall my favourite film by RZ...which isn't hard IMO, but all the same.

Pandorum - I REALLY thought I'd like this, I REALLY wanted to like it. I do not.
I won't even finish watching it, I think it's a completely crap film.

Was there a reason for this?

He did go through a lot in the original and became a bit of a prick in the sequel, I can understand it, I also forgive it since he became his old self again toward the end.

I found the end a tad confusing in what it was trying to symbolise.

Which ending did you have? I think the endings both had different meanings even though they're both the same exact scenes. In the theatrical version I think it was supposed to show that Laurie's snapped and she's as crazy as Michael now, haunted by a vision of their mother. In the Director's Cut I interpreted it as symbolizing Laurie's afterlife where she's together with her family because of Deborah mentioning the line about going home. I'm not sure why Michael wasn't in the shot in this case, though I assume it's because Zombie knew that wouldn't be the ending and didn't bother to shoot it.

As for the white horse, the introduction says "WHITE HORSE- linked to instinct, purity and drive for the physical body to release powerful and emotional forces, like rage with ensuing chaos and destruction." I think that's what was for Michael as well as Laurie in the theatrical version, but for Laurie in the Director's Cut ending I think it symbolized death, as Death, the fourth horseman rides a pale horse.

I never knew he was given a lot of shock treatment when he was younger. Harrowing documentary that about the often ignored Third Reich's vicious persecution of male homosexuals during World War II. The title comes from an arcane, 1871 German statute making sodomy punishable by incarceration (with the ultimate goal to eradicate gays completely). Only a handful of survivors -- now frail and withered -- remain to recount their traumatic tales in this poignant film.

One of the saddest things, About it was long after the war and many of these men were still getting prosecuted under Paragraph 175, right into the 50s+60s...

Feast 3: The Happy Finish (2009). For those of you that hated the second instalment you will probably hate this one as well. i found it to be a little better than the second, but that there was no dearth of breasts flapping in the wind may have helped. This one was made to be predominantly funny, and it worked for me. The end was a bit difficult to watch, being 10 minutes or so of strobe light violence. Currently trying to fight off a cold so had to stick to something I knew I'd enjoy.

Fright Night- Quality film. Could easily be dismissed as just another teen horror but its loaded with superb characters and sophisticated script and direction from Tom Holland. Roddy McDowall is superb as Peter Vincent and brings an unbelivable depth to the character and is well supported by the rest of the cast. So much of this movie is delivered with a sly wink, walking the line between Horror and Comedy perfectly. Throw in some 'proper' special effects and you really can't go wrong. Everytime I've finished watching this movie I want to rewind it and watch it again.

Fright Night II- By the numbers sequel which is far from perfect. The vampire slaying duo of Charley Brewster & Peter Vincent return which makes this film worth the watch but it falls short of the standards set by the first film. Still decent value entertainment as Ragsdale and McDowall form a great team.

In Bruges (2008). Not expecting much, i was more than pleasantly surprised by this flick. Appropriately slow at the get go, the initial pace allowed for not only great character development, but also reveals the perfectly unbalanced relationship of our two protags. Dark humor coupled with some drama and ultimately some well received violence, this poetic flick ends in a wonderfully ironic fashion. The acting was solid, the story well crafted, and the use of the wonderful scenery in Bruges was well received. Ashe.

AVATAR

I went into the theater really wanting to like this film, I really did.

And I wasn't disappointed. This was one of my best Cinema experiences ever. I watched it in 3D, and I suggest you do the same. Cameron did a brilliant job of creating the forest moon of Pandora. The forests themselves were so inventive I couldn't begin to fathom how he came up with some of the things, and the life on the planet was, while not quite as original, still breathtaking. That is of course excluding the Na'vi who were incredibly inventively made.

The storyline kept moving along as a decent pace, and whilst it slowed around the half way line, it quickly picked up pace in a wonderful yet devastating scene. And scenes like this were not rare. Throughout the entire picture I found myself feeling for the characters in a way that is not common for me. Whilst I did not get choked up I was so immersed in the scenes that some of them did get me inside. And this was because of the message it had. It was very relevant to events going on on Earth. I usually get annoyed when I feel a film is preaching to me, especially about the environment. But not this film. The execution is spot on, and it truly does make you think about certain current events.

On top of the incredible creativity and perfect execution, the characterization is brilliant for the most part and the acting is truly without fault. They were, as I said, so convincing in the parts they played that when certain scenes came crashing down I felt for these characters. The CGI is breathtaking, incredibly ambitious and totally believable. Sigourney Weaver in particular impressed me, even more so than usual. Her character is easily one of the best she's played in a long time. And Sam Worthington truly takes on the role of Jake Sully.

The score, whilst at times a bit old fashioned Sci Fi, complements the film greatly and the 3D effect takes the whole thing literally to a new dimension. If I were to pick a fault with this film it would be that certain parts weren't so original. Whilst they worked perfectly, I saw elements of the force in there. However, with so many inventive Sci Fi films it's natural that there would be similarities.

I can't stress enough how much you should see this film. Don't wait for it to come out on DVD if you want to get the full experience. And don't settle for 2D. Don't settle for a bad seat in the theater and don't get up to go to the toilet half way through. You will regret it. Whilst nothing could, you don't want to risk anything spoiling this flick for you.

On my top ten films list.

5 stars, 4 thumbs up, ten out of ten. In short, top marks.

The Messengers (2007). A decent ghost story at best. i would expect more from the Pang Brothers, but they probably had to conform to American standards of blasé horror film-making. The scares were typical, and most of the film was pretty mundane. Most impressive was Kristen Stewart's acting. At 16 or 17, she did a pretty good job in this lead role, especially for a non teen scream flick. The children that played the toddler Ben were also enjoyable to watch. Dylan McDermott was painfully out of place in his role; casting, what were you thinking? Overall it was just ok. Late.

Decided to check this out based on a surprisingly good review in Rue Morgue Magazine. I didn't realize, however, that the glowing review was purely from a fanboy perspective. Essentially, if you're a fan of 80s horror and want to see an homage to a T (as opposed to an ironic homage/parody that you see in My Bloody Valentine 3D), watch this film. For me, however, it just didn't do it. Not even Crispin Glover could save it.

After the unsatisfying Simon Says, we decided to peruse Netflix instant and finally watch this film that had been sitting in the queue for quite some time. Quite frankly, I'm a HUGE sucker for movies having to do with old asylums, twisted science, and the like, but this was more of a co-ed pop horror film looking to catch the Scream audience. All characters are caricatures and there wasn't a whole lot of old-timey asylum torture, which is usually what gets me going. Sarah Roemer is a refreshingly hot scream queen, however. It was good to see her out of a cheerleader movie and back into horror.

Regardless of its faults, I still watched it at least.

Since this movie was brought up during a discussion of Pontypool, I figured that I'd check it out. I like Bill Mosely and I was honestly curious in terms of two REALLY similar infection movies coming out at the same time.

I have to say, though, I was disappointed. Whereas Pontypool was definitely creepy, suspenseful, and even delightfully gory at times, Dead Air seemed to be just that; air devoid of anything, including tension, suspense, or horror. Also, the "reason" was absolutely lame and contrived.

It's not quite a surprise that Lynch's latest Production enterprise is one of the more tense movies that I have seen in a long, long time. Written and directed by his daughter, Jennifer Lynch, Surveillance has all the makes of an intense murder mystery/thriller as you, the audience member, are walked through the events that eventually lead up to the crimes that are being solved. But, of course, it's not your everyday murder mystery.

Definitely more linear and less absurd than Lynch's usual fare, Surveillance is a brilliant character piece that definitely had me on the edge of my seat at times... No, not in a scared way, but in a cringing sort of way... A good cringing sort of way. The reveal is a little hokey, but the end is so well constructed that you forgive it almost immediately.

I would say that this is a must-see for genre fans.

First off, I have a few grievances to air:

Why, Pixar, WHY do you orchestrate your advertising in such a way as to REPEL me from your feature films? Cars had me believe that it was nothing but redneck drag-racing fare and here with Up I couldn't understand WHY a grumpy old man and a cherubic rube would cause me to run out to the theater... This is the second time that I have had no desire to see a Pixar film at the movies that I honestly wished I had!

Up was amazing! It was funny without being pandering. It was tear-jerking without being manipulative. And it was absolutely STUNNING without a flaw. Easily one of my Top 3 Films of 2009, Up has a little for everyone... From cartoonish antics that made me giggle to whimsical fantasies that made me smile and sigh, to genuine characters who made me cry... It's been a while since I've felt so sad/happy/inspired by a single film, and Up did just that. It's fun, adventurous, and absolutely charming. HIGHLY recommend it.

Completely agree with this one. The first ten to fifteen minutes were easily the most emotionally impact portion of the entire film. Carl is such a lovable character, that we feel for him from the very beginning. You feel the joy that he feels, and when his wife passes away, you feel his loss. By the end of the whole sequence, it turns into one of those rare celluloid moments that stays in heart forever.

A brilliant animated feature (top notch in every department) with a heart & soul that shares an adventure truly for all ages.

Breathless (1960). This infamous Godard flick, shot on a shoestring with a handheld, is all about style. Revolutionary in some of the techniques used, this is a quirky flick that is probably best appreciated by serious film buff and students. "To become mortal, and then die."

Happiness (1998). What a collection of awful characters. Everytime i thought one to be the most despicable, another would rise to the occassion. This disturbingly great flick is comprised of a beautifully complicated story whose many characters are interwoven around three sisters. Everyone here has cyclopean problems, but as the characters are believeable, their difficulties seem painfully real as well. i love the title, as no one is happy here, and even those that should be happy complain that the source of what should be making them happy actually is the source of their dismay. The cast is terrific, with veterans and strong newcomers alike. A must see for all of those able to deal with very strong content matter. Ashe.

Of course there are many scenes of great, drawn out dialogue as one would expect from Tarantino. Quite a few long, tracking shots that were beautifully done. Some great photography and set design. I thought the acting was great from everyone involved. Overall I think it's a great movie from a technical standpoint. BUT... From a non-technical standpoint I wasn't too impressed. The movie drags and drags and drags. It's really about an hour too long. I really felt that Tarantino wasn't sure what kind of movie he wanted to make. A serious war movie? A slapstick comedy? A balls-out action film? I found it to be so disjointed in those regards that it became a chore to watch. Add in the 2.5 hour runtime and I'm seriously glad that I watched it at home and not in the theater. At least I could pause it from time to time so that I could take a break from it. It had it's moments, but they were so far from one another that the movie just became tedious to finish.

Inglourious Basterds

Sheitan (2006). Pretty witty little French flick that threatens to turn nasty at ever corner. The acting was fine, and the characters were a great trio of boorish thugs, potential sluts/teases, and creepy creepies. When things get going they get weird, with the central creep really got my skin crawling. The disconcerting feeling it generates is almost on par with Calvaire and Frontiers, only that it spends more actually generating this icky feeling, like a smoldering fire that may erupt at any time. Some things are just wrong, and this film seems attracted to such things like a moth to a flame. The ending, while not at all what i expected, was actually good in its own way. All in all i really liked it. Ashe.

http://content9.flixster.com/movie/10/89/28/10892835_pro.jpg

Another psycho thriller from the producers of Wolf Creek, in a remote fishing town, happily married Rob and Jess have been trying to have a baby for three long years and she is becoming desperate. In a drunken mistake, she sleeps with Evan, a young stranger come to town whose interest in her borders on the obsessive. The day she discovers she is pregnant, Jess' guilt turns to horror as Evan begins a terrifying transformation from stalker to psychopath, determined to prove paternity of the child and claim Jess for his own. In the vein of Fatal Attraction and Cape Fear, Coffin Rock is a story of infidelity, leading to harassment, terror and murder.

One False Move (1992). This rather simple story is effectively told, with appropriate character development and an effective big city cops meets backwater police chief. After a pretty gruesome start, this film settles down and events move forward perfectly. The small town feel in Arkansas was nicely created. The acting was superb on all accounts, with Cynda Williams making for an alluring though haunting antiheroine. The direction was great, and at times the camera work fun and creative. The dialogue was well crafted. All in all a great little flick. Ashe.

Well, what I most want to say about this one is that I haven't felt this way after leaving a theatre since Jurassic Park.

What a knock-out. What grows from a slightly-overused Fern Gully-esque cautionary tale plot (and I don't even mean that as negatively as it sounds), is as wondrous as the gorgeous, new nature we're exposed to for all of the film's nearly 3 hours.

All-in-all, pretty great.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Great entertainment. I'll admit that I'm not overly well-versed in Holmes history (I've only read a couple of the original stories, and the only film version I've seen is the Peter Cushing Hound of the Baskervilles) but as far as I can tell this version still sticks to the core of what makes Holmes such an amazing character, and also fully succeeds in updating him for a modern audience. Could have done without the love interest - though Rachel McAdams is drop-dead gorgeous as always, her character could easily have been written out.

A solid action movie with a crackling script and great performances wrapped around a half-decent mystery - Downey Jr. continues his hot streak and leads this to be one of the most entertaining films of '09. I can see Holmes purists getting pissed at certain elements, but overall it's a fantastic facelift for a classic character.

The Name of the Rose (1986). i was lucky to have seen this movie about 2 weeks after reading the book Civilization of the Middle Ages. Otherwise, some of the historical nuances would have made no sense. The setting is pretty accurately portrayed, and the underlying backstory concerning the two sects of monks was spot on. Sean Connery was of course his good old self, and newcomer Christian Slater played the young apprentice with aplomb. He must have been stoked to do the scene with "the girl." The mood of restrictive repression of the times was nicely created, and the camera captured the dirty and ominous medieval nature of the land, monastary, and peasant village. The story was strong and well layed out. The direction was great. While the ending smelled of Hollywood, it did not detract anything from the wonderful nature of this film. Overall a really good watch. Ashe.

The Video Dead- One of my favourite zombie films. Watching this film is a huge nostalgia trip for me. First watched this film in the early ninties, rented from my local video store. At probably 11 or 12 years old I was young enough to ignore things like bad acting, continuity or production quality and able to just revel in the fact I was watching a film with zombies (pretty good special effects), chainsaws and copious amounts of blood. It's fair to say I am completley bias when judging this movie, but it doesn't change the fact that I love it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but in an era dominated by formulaic slashers The Video Dead definatley qualifies as something different. Would love to see this film get a DvD release. If you hadn't worked out what its about by the title, its about a bunch of zombies coming out of an evil TV set to cause some trouble....

Mulberry Street (2006). Great little low budget horror flick. While the story was sorta corny, the way in which it was portrayed worked. The camerawork, whilst it would probably nauseate most, made for an edgy and claustrphobic feel. The direction and all of that other stuff was fine. Great acting, excellent soundtrack, cute story. My emotions were up and down, as the plot was going back and forth between events which was really effective. I think I will buy this one, or at least the OST. so good.

Up In The Air
I haven't cried in a movie theater since I was sick at Saw 4. This was a good kind of crying though. The whole movie is a constant build up of every different emotion. The acting was amazing, especially Anna Kendrick, and Vera Ferminga. Just everything was amazing. The lomo photography style of the opening credits made me smile so much, the colours and costuming was excellent. So many good things that I don't really know how to explain because I'm not a film student. Also they made a reference to a favourite French film of mine. Just go see it.

Amelie
Oh hey look, it's that favourite French film referenced in Up In The Air. Not much to report that I haven't said about it a billion times.

Y Tu Mama Tambien
A little bit annoying to start off, but it get's better. guess it's just that I can't tolerate stoner assholes like the 2 main characters. Whatever, good movie I liked it. Gonna give it another watch when I'm not too tired for subtitles because now I have a headache.

In the past few days I've watched.

Orphan - I thought it was a good movie.Definitely worth a watch.

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage IMO one of the best of Argento's movies.I still haven't seen all his movies(I'm working on it...)

Mother of Tears I didn't like this one as much as Suspiria, or Inferno but it's nice to see the complete 'mother' trilogy

Comment from IMDB:

"For a movie I haven't seen in 10 or 20 years, and one that I disliked on its initial release, THE OTHER sure has stuck with me. It is a low-budget, low-key retelling of a psychological horror novel by actor-turned-writer Tom Tryon, and it is pretty darned faithful to its source material. The twins playing the murderous kid are terrific, and veteran thesp Uta Hagen is a standout as the grandma. It used to run on TV a lot. Now it is a "lost" classic. See it if you can. There is a cellar sequence, of which I will say no more other than that it is key to the whole plot, that is sure to scare the pants off even the most hardened horror film fan."

SOLD!!!

Paranormal Activity.
I don't care how many endings it had...for those who saw it in a noisy cinema, you might find on dvd viewings, it wasn't spoiled by that.
Did not like.

Alice in Wonderland - the ol' animated one.
Saw this as I heard that the "new" one is something of a sequel of sorts, so thought I'd freshen up a tad.
Yknow...this is a pretty damn good animated film no matter what spin you put on it, great animation, some of the strangest dialogue that has ways of getting so nonsensical that it starts making sense again, REALLY good background/scenery art, a fantasy classic for sure. And yknow what? I couldn't remember them, but I actually thought the songs were pretty good too.
Hard to believe it was made all the way back in '51...

The noisy theater is what sold it for me. I was more scared from people's nervous energy and screams, than I was by the plot or on screen jumps. I don't think I would like it on dvd at allll. But uhm.... do you think you could send me a file of the alternate endings? I'll give you my e-mail and everything, but I can't find them online and I'm curious about the original suicide ending.

Nah, I just heard about a few different alternate endings...didn't see any other'n the one I got...in which:
The guy hears her screaming and goes downstairs, she comes back up with blood on her carrying a knife, cops come in later and when she goes towards them holding the knife in a confused state they shoot her.
...I looked up some of the endings on youtube but all I found was a bunch of dickheads.

Grace (2009). Not your typical horror flick, it was not really scary but instead disturbing. The story was pretty good overall. This movie really captured the gritty realities of some of the more overlooked aspects of a life when it turns messy. The direction was very good from a relative newcomer. The acting was fine, and the camerawork was pretty fun, especially with the use of focus. Fairly gory and very unsettling, i wouldn't recommend this to pregnant gals or those with young children.

Paranormal Activity (2007). i thought this one to be genuinely fearful. i watched it just before going to sleep, which was perfect for effect. i think much of the scare factor here comes from making that which is mundane into a potential time of terror. Good stuff. .

Is that a remake of the old 'Black Devil doll from hell'?

i don't think so, but they may have hijacked the basic concept of a possessed doll from them. BDV was pretty much an over the top sexploitation piece with no boundaries. It was kinda a "so bad its fun" thing; it did have a couple of hilarious moments.

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire (2009)

Wasn't crazy about it. Doesn't really give you much reason to care about the main character beyond the fact that she has a shitty life. Her situation is powerfully portrayed through strong acting and solid direction, but the fact is that Precious just isn't a very likable character. Not all movies have to make you like the main character, but for something like this to work you should be able to feel something for her...maybe it's just because I'm from the absolute wrong demographic, but I really couldn't care much at all.

It's not really a bad movie, just not as good as the hype machine wants you to think. It's well made and showcases some strong performances - I don't think she deserves to win, but Mo'Nique will be getting a well deserved Oscar nomination for her role as the abusive mother - but overall it fell pretty flat for me.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

A few months back I watched a wonderful documentary on John Ford...I hadn't seen any of his films at the time, but was immediately on the lookout for some of his work. Well, this is the first film of his that I've had the opportunity to watch, and I couldn't be more impressed. A western that beyond being beautifully shit and well acted, really leaves you with something to think about. Our two "heroes" - John Wayne's Tom Doniphon and James Stewart's Ransom Stoddard - are both fascinating characters, and the film leaves you with a moral dilemma: both men have their own flaws and made their own mistakes...but who did the right thing?

Absolutely makes my list of favourite westerns, and I'll be checking out more of Ford's work as soon as I can.

This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact...print the legend.

Invictus (2009)

A good film, but I was expecting more from Eastwood. Freeman, Damon and the supporting cast all give fantastic performances, but the film as a whole seemed overlong - the blame for which lies partially with the poorly paced script, but also with the lackluster (and often inappropriate) score. I was interested from beginning to end and there were some brilliant moments here and there, but it could easily have been 20 minutes shorter and had a much stronger impact.

I went in not expecting much but I really enjoyed it. There was a moment in the beginning half where I almost fell asleep but after a nudge from the wife my interest was captured. For the life of me I can't figure out why films today love to flirt with that two and a half hour length, especially when it seems so unnecessary. Good flick though, can't wait for the next.

The Bank Job (2008). It was nice to see Jason Statham get a chance to prove that he can act without the requisite action scenes to bolster his qualities. This was a top notch caper flick. Although it started a little slow, once it got going the pacing was perfect. With little initial action, the story-telling was enough to keep the viewer more than interested; there was sufficient character development to get the viewer to care about the characters. As usual with British caper flicks, this was nicely convoluted such that the characters were all nicely intertwined. Acting was strong, direction was fine, lubba lubba lubba. Overall a great crime drama. AShe.

The Stranger Returns (1967)

A great pair of low-budget spaghetti westerns...enjoyed them both. They've got a wonderfully cynical sense of humor throughout, and Anthony's Stranger never ceases to entertain. The second film is stronger by far, but the first is still a really fun little western.

I'd consider both of these flicks must-sees for any spaghetti western fans out there. Even though they were quite obviously made to cash in on Leone's trilogy, these are still highly entertaining.
