Case for Christ (2017)
9/10
http://www.filmxy.cc/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/The-Case-for-Christ-2017-cover.jpg
Based on true story... in the 1980s, award winning Chicago Tribune investigative reporter and avowed atheist Lee Stroble, becomes deeply distressed when his formerly atheist wife finds religion, putting his marriage in deep trouble. Lee uses his modern investigative reporting skills to prove Christ, the crucifixion and/or resurrection has no bases in historical fact or reason.
Authentic period piece, tight modern direction, and Oscar worthy performance by lead Mike Vogel. This is how the subject matter is done... unflinchingly. There's a devotion to the subject matter at hand, not unlike Zodiac (2007), Spotlight (2015) and other subject pieces, but holds and interweaves the dramatic and emotional elements together well. Tis the season.

Two more Netflix offerings...
The House of Small Cubes (2008)
9/10
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_9860.jpeg
12 minutes long
To save his house from rising flood waters, an old man uses bricks to build it higher. Unique art style, looking like water color. Rich in symbolism and subtle emotion. (Also on youtube.)
Space Pirate Captain Harlock (2013)
6/10
https://cdn.pastemagazine.com/www/articles/netflix-film-13.jpg
Long ago, after billions of humans colonize space, they all want to return to Earth, an organization bars all humans from ever landing on Earth. An immortal space pirate, Captain Harlock, with his nearly invincible space ship and his devoted crew try to change things.
Has some nifty eye candy, but the shallow plot moves very slowly. You can guess almost all the character plot twists from the beginning. And at just over 2 hours, all but the most diehard animation lovers may find it hard to reach the conclusion.

Cube (1997) -- on Netflix --
7/10
"Six complete strangers of widely varying personality characteristics are involuntarily placed in an endless maze containing deadly traps."
Actor Maurice Dean Wint, as Quintin/Police Officer, does such an excellent engrossing job that it really kick-starts the film. It's interesting and well paced. The story and characters run out of gas after the first hour though... either the characters, or the Cube setting, needed to become more complex for the 90 minute runtime. But being a little uncomfortable with the circumstances and characters seems rather fitting to the plot.
I think the Cube Trilogy is one of the best recent horror series. I want to see the third one again. But I thought the setup was really good with the traps and what would people do in that situation. I thought I heard about a remake some time ago but I guess nothing came of it. And I love how the Star Trek girl screams murderer!!!

Cube 2: Hypercube (2002)
5/10
A group of folks are trapped in a cube.
As compared to the prior film Cube (1997), besides an upgrade in visual effects, this was a down grade in everything else. I found it difficult to know, and/or care about, any of the characters. More characters were tied to the Cube, but we aren't invited into the personal lives of each character, which is really the heart of the film, and strength of the first film.
The physical Cube structure's puzzles were fewer, and often less interesting. It's interesting if all (possible) harm to the human subjects are merely incidental to the function Cube, but why there were many human subjects, and why those subjects, are questions that should be central, not (possibly) left unanswered.
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings (2001)
10/10
Hobbits, Wizards, Elves, Dwarves and humans battle an evil force bent on conquering Middle-earth.
Not only far in away the best of the three Lord of the Rings films, but one of the best films of all-time. Full of emotion, love, friendship, inner battles of conscience, of evil and righteousness -- all in a suspenseful, good humored and visually stunning film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (2017)
7/10
"The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill's true parentage."
Mildly entertaining. Some very nice visuals, good humored without being particularly funny, actually a fascinating plot, but otherwise not venturing into what could be very interesting character depth material.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/4mx7jgg21/last_jedi.jpg
THE LAST JEDI was more of like a connecting episode between The Force Awakens (2015) and the one(s) that will come next. Not so much as a standalone film. Felt like they weren't sure enough on what to do with Kylo Ren/BenSolo this time. I understand his torments and past but Johnson kinda played with him, resulting some sort of inconsistency. Expected a darker & twisted origin story for Kylo Ren. First half was quite flat but liked the 2nd half, particularly the finale though. Luke's segment or story arc was treated well. This 8th episode also kind of lacks in action-adventures parts in compare to the recent films in the series. And last but not the least, no more JJB obviously but frustrated that they still haven't added any good non-human character in an important/significant role. I think either Finn or Poe should have been a non-human creature with thoughts, motivation and overall a solid character.
Overall, not a bad film at all but not as entertaining as I thought it'd be. Among this new line of films (JJ Abrams era), here's my ranking:
1. Rogue One
2. The Force Awakens
3. The Last Jedi

What the FUCK was that ending? Go back and try again movie.
You know it's bad when I look forward to watching the remake. Which is sad because everything else up until the ending (which I felt was left unfinished) was marvelous! The killer was intriguing as well as scary, the victims you actually liked and felt for, and the suspense was down right Hitchcockian!
), I was anxious to track down the remake to see if it was an improvement over the original. It was not. Well it DID at least have an ending, but at the cost of likable characters, suspense build up, and actual horror.

I don't mention that many blockbuster type movies here but Rogue One is also kind of like a horror movie. I think it's the only one to go with the original Star Wars movies so far. I haven't seen The Last Jedi yet and I'm debating if I'm going to the theater or waiting for the video release. I haven't spoiled myself on it either but I've seen news of wild opinions.
But back to Rogue One, I did find myself attached to the main characters and their story. So much that I forgot the story of the original Star Wars and the ending was a surprise.

My buddy and I just tried to watch that tonight. It's so funny! You know, this premise (for "Bright" Netflix original film) really mimics the 1988 film Alien Nation, and short lived TV series... where space aliens have integrated into Earth and one of the aliens becomes a cop partner, the aliens get drunk drinking sour milk. It was kind of an aftershock of the TV series "V", me thinks...
Anyway My buddy and I watched the first 15-20 mins, and it was mildly entertaining, but we were both like "when is the thick of the plot going to take shape?" They were just going into the rich-bitch Elf town, and the human cops were trying to get fellow department cop Will Smith to bad mouth his partner Orc so he'd get transferred out of the department... LOL it's just so, so, symbolic of racism and the class divide in America... well, anyway we had to get on to other things, and I doubt I'll be revisiting the film.

The Last Jedi (2017)
8/10
Highly enjoyed it. Liked it much better than the previous "Force Awakens". This film felt more authentic, and characters seemed totally committed. And although there were scenes much too close to former Star Wars films, they still felt authentic and plausible rather than an homage, or the Force forbid, parody.
Cube Zero (2004)
6/10
The third "Cube" film is a prequel to the first 1997 offering. Adds an effective new wrinkle to the story of the Cube, where we are introduced to two characters who help maintain and process the Cube and it's victims, in a Nineteen-Eighty-Four-esque setting. We learn more about who and why people are in the Cube. But although we know about the why of the Cube the film drops the ball on the immensely fun puzzles of the Cube, and we barely get to know anything meaningful about the characters in the Cube, which was the meat of the first film.

Murder on the Orient Express (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3402236/?ref_=nv_sr_1)
Let's see:
On the plus side
- The story was well told.
- I liked the way they caught the general atmosphere of the Christie universe, with a few modern tweeks.
- The cast delivered, though Depp was perhaps a bit too much for the Christie universe. No shame he was bumped off quite quickly. I particularly liked Dafoe and Ridley.
On the down side
- The chase scene (with Tubby McGoo of all people) was not necessary. Poirot relies on his wits, as shown with the bit with the cane. It's a detective, not a cop show.
- I personally did not think too much of the "emo Poirot". The strength of the character were the cool, the mistery and the inscrutable. Starting from there, the (former) girlfriend ex machina and what not felt a bit forced.
- The ending felt a bit rushed/forced/stupid. Sequel bait?
So all in all a good way to spend two hours, but I think there are better Poirot-films. Branagh did a good job, but David Suchet remains the Poirot par excellence.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/wrisjw815/killing_of_a_sacred_deer_ver2.jpg
Yorgos Lanthimos' take on psychological horror with a weirdly twisted tale of revenge & sacrifice! The chilling background scores set the tone from the very beginning and take you into the little odd family of a surgeon who befriends a teenage boy that ends up placing a curse on his family with unnerving & harrowing consequences.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/inmxbyiyh/3_BB.jpg
No parent in this world deserve to loss a child by an unspeakable tragedy or a brutal crime but when they does, not every tragedy teaches us tolerance and not everyone can get to channel their grief & anger through an unorthodox way like Frances McDormand's Mildred did in this emotionally moving dramedy. And as we know the world is far more complex & unpleasant place than most celluloid projections but it takes a remarkable storyteller & filmmaker to convey that in a convincing manner and Martin McDonagh did this wonder in his latest and this year's one of the best films here. When the little town almost starts to forget about the vicious rape & murder of her young daughter, the aggrieved mother Mildred Hayes rents the three abandoned billboards near her home to protest over the lack of progress in the investigation. This leads to pressure on the townsfolk's favorite chief (beautifully played by our favorite Woody Harrelson), resulting anger from his loyal officers, and so on down the line. This is a darkly funny, yet a very profound film where most of the major characters were flawed by their decisions or actions, torn apart inside by grief or frustrations and that made it so grounded & compelling. Almost every actor in their assigned role did justice to the solid & neatly written scripts where the character developments turned out one of the most strongest elements of this movie. McDormand on the lead delivered clearly an Oscar worthy performance, she was so great with her character's internal language...time to time slowly revealing the pain underneath the rage was something so stunning & compelling to watch that I haven't seen in most of the acclaimed & major films of recent years. Sam Rockwell just nailed his supporting role of Dixon, a small town racist police officer, the development & along the way the changes in his character were another striking part of the film. Not just being a fan of McDonagh's IN BRUGES (2008), I think this is the best film of the year that really deserve some major recognition in coming award season.

Psychopaths, 2017. 7,5/10
Rented this last night. Yep, amazing. I'm not surprised. I love Mickey Keating's movies.
Alot of people won't like this.. Someone I know turned it off and will try to watch it again...later.
Fans of Keating's film style will adore this.
Jeremy Gardner, who starred and directed the film The Battery is in this. He is outstanding as this psycho cop. ::love:: His dialog and acting owns this movie and he's only in a few scenes. My favorite.

Worst film of the year. I know it will be.
I rather watch Pitchfork. ::shocked::
The acting was horrible... an emotionless mess. The Zombies, the FX. ::mad::

Thelma (2017)
https://s26.postimg.org/ejxwisq55/thelma-poster2.jpg
After moving to Oslo for her college education, Thelma soon starts to experience some seizures as her religious upbringing couldn't hide her dark secret much longer into this new surroundings of urban life, freedom & friends. Raised in isolation, her parents tried their best to suppress Thelma's subconsciously-controlled strange powers all these years but the recent development of her romantic feelings for a new friend triggers some inexplicable chain of events; and as we know, every 'Jean Grey' (or her long distant cousin) must go through her own journey of self discovery with devastating consequences.
This Norwegian thriller was somewhat like a slow burn, art-house take on a X-MEN spin-off sort of story. Though there were some lose ends but it was beautifully shot & acted, one of the finest offerings from 2017's European cinema.

SAW.
I've yet to see the (probably disappointing) JIGSAW movie, and it's been ages since having watched any of these.
We grabbed all 7 of the original series to watch before buying the new one on BluRay.
Also, this time we'll watch them close enough together to actually follow in terms of the carry over characters and events...something I've never been able to do before.
So, Saw...I still like it, but some of the acting is really glaringly atrocious, specifically from Cary Elwes...was this guy ever considered a "good" actor? I'm thinking not. He can play calm just fine, but the moment there's any emotional state it just becomes like someone doing a "bad act" of it. Yeesh.
It's one of those movies that loses a bit of value from initial viewing and already being aware of the twist/s involved, but it's still somewhat watchable...I feel like killing Tapp off was a bit premature in the series, but I guess they didn't know if there'd be such a slew of sequels or not at the time.
One thing I've never understood, is exactly why Adam was captured...and I still don't get it. Because he was a P-I? I mean a job is a job, right? Usually they're only catching out wrongdoers anyway...it just seems a petty reason to make him one of the "players".
I did like Zep, although he seemed to be enjoying it a little too much.
I think he was a bit of a precursor to a few of the other unstable assistant characters. Then when his tape is revealed...he's been poisoned and "has to" do this. He was a Janitor. He actually did/said something nice in the hospital so that Gordon could humanise his patients beyond a case number.
It strikes me that he *probably* could have just talked to him...I think he'd be up for it, given his intro scene. I looked up some info on this. "inferiority complex"...I'm sure a lot of janitors might feel this way. "Talks about the doctors and their affairs behind their backs" - Maybe this is a plotpoint in later films but nothing in this one...and, is that THAT bad? I mean the main one he seemed to have issue with was Gordon.
So that's some confusion for both the aforementioned characters...put together they kind of go against the whole Jigsaw killer "people who deserve it" type deal introduced when his character is further explored in later films, or at very least pretty lame reasons. A job, and a guy who'd have every right not to be greatly satisfied with life - These two decisions? They just make him come across as a prick.
All in all, this is something of an iconic modern horror. I'd still give it a 7/10 for its (at the time) originality.

El Bar
- A
In bustling downtown Madrid, a loud gunshot and two mysterious deaths trap a motley assortment of common urbanites in a decrepit central bar, while paranoia and suspicion force the terrified regulars to turn on each other.
Found it good, enjoyed it. It lacked something, but can't get around what.

You're Next:
After the opening kill, it starts off with a couple on their way to a family reunion (the parents are celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary). Things go south fairly quickly, first with the classic family argument, then with a (group of) killer(s) invading the house.
Enjoyable stuff. Good build-up, a few good jump scares and a decent twists.
- The smartest character (inevitably the one getting killed first) is set up well.
- They layed it on a bit too thick with Zee's weirdness.
- The ending with the cop is pretty funny.

James Franco might have the accent right, but he was just way too good looking to be Wiseau, which was very distracting to me.
I had that thought too actually. But he played the part so well, down to the weird ass accent, I couldn't really complain.
Didn’t get a lot of insight to who this alien person really is, but all in all it was decent. 7/10
Have you read the book? It gives more insight, but not by much, at least not that I remember. I want to know where Greg got his sources on it and what not. Because Wiseau still doesn't want people to know that much about him. He actually liked the movie and didn't care for the book because the book gave too much about him away.

Yeah that's it. Some of those puppets movies where kind of freaky back then. I think it was because I was expecting a kiddy movie and it turned out to be dark. There was a version of The Wiz that was like that too with killer puppets in train stations and mean monkeys riding flying bicycles with axes or something like that.

Saw 3 - Never liked this one. Still don't.
Saw 4 - Probably one of the more superior sequels in my mind...perhaps #1 after the original. Enriches Johns back story which I enjoyed. Few good twists and turns ;)

Girls Night -
This short horror film was posted in a separate topic but I guess no one picked up on it.
r3NcKsJQjgM
It's only 10 minutes or so and basically concerns some foreign girls that unfortunately come across a killer. And the killer is creepy in every scene. The design of the killer reminds me of another character or person but I can't place it. I love the scene in the opening as I always wondered about people who live on the first floor in heavily trafficked areas that open their windows. Surely anyone can pop inside. It also reminded me of a scene early on in The French Connection.
The later scene reminded me of Blair Witch and a few other scary horror scenes. It's worth a watch. I do wish there was more with the characters. Perhaps them noticing moved items or something. Maybe feeling another presence in the room to add to the creepy atmosphere.

9/10
"In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play."
Much better than I expected. There is plenty of drama in the real-life story, and Dr. Omalu is a fascinating figure, and Will Smith does a fine job bringing him to life. The story has much to do with conviction, values, self-sacrifice and hard decisions.
King King (2006) Netflix
7/10
I don't want to give too much away... but a film, and merchant ship, crew discover a giant gorilla and bring it back to 1933 New York... and back in 1933 New York, they hadn't seen a giant gorilla, not even from the future. It's a mildly fun film, with mildly likable or hate-able characters. There's some nice big screen CG visuals, especially in New York, but basically every action sequence goes on much too long. The film runtime is 3 hours and 7 mins. I think the film would have been more enjoyable if it were cut more tightly. I did quite enjoy the first 40 or so minutes, which take place before the ship leaves NY... which is a good part of the film to nail; as we do get a fair handle on the main characters, and it pay dividends.
I would consider King Kong (2006) as my least favorite film of that name, after King Kong (1933) and King Kong (1976). Kong: Skull Island (2017) was better too.

Godzilla: Monster Planet (2017) Netflix
6/10
My pal Sven said this was good... Meh.mmmm..... not... mmm... can't say agree. This is an animated Japanese offering, and "Episode 1" is out, and it's 1hr 27 mins... on Netflix. It's really more of a sci-fi military drama.
So it's like this... in the intro... giant monsters reek havoc... er I mean wreaks havoc on Earth, just as an alien race reaches Earth after a long journey from their destroyed planet. They want to settle on Earth, and offer to kill Godzilla, but they are unsuccessful! So they take the remaining Earthlings on their space ship and flee Earth. They get as far as Jupiter ::big grin:: and it takes a long, long time... and then collectively the Earthling and Aliens (who look like humans) decide to go back to Earth and see what's up.
Well, I don't think I'm giving too much away when I say... some how... Earth has gone through 10,000 years, but the escaping ship only 40 years, or something like that... you know whatever, these guys must be rolling dice, or something else, so we'll just go with it. So they find there's still a Godzilla there, and through science and military, they are going to try to destroy it and settle back on Earth. It really comes off quite sophomoric emotional jingoism and rather science militaristic action, but not in a good way. There's not a lot "godzilla stuff" going on.

Saw 6...
So I've continued through my rewatch of the entire series...been watching one of these every few days I guess.
My take so far
1
2
4 Edges in over 5 here, largely on account of the jigsaw back story.
5
3&6 Tie for bottom place.
At this point the "twists" and revisits/alternate take add-ons are just getting annoying.
These movies are watchable, but really the only sequel in the latter half to really rise above the one before it was 4.

I'm not disappointed, I didn't go in with super high expectations. Yknow. They're "ok".
Damn site better than say, hellraiser sequels after 3.
Interesting, Cheebs. Yeah, I was impressed with the original Saw, thought it was a good horror thriller. Saw 2 already seemed "mechanical" to me.
See! This is what I love about you...you're such a girly girl. ::love::::wink::

"While trying to spice up their marriage in their remote lake house, Jessie must fight to survive when her husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame."
Pretty interesting, fairly entertaining, well made. I didn't really get why we were seeing the "side story" of the "bone collector guy" at the end of the film (or anywhere). I did not think that plot line meshed well with the main plot of the story and her personal past issue. And then diving into 'the bone guy' at the end just came off really weird and disjointed to me.

Jonah Hill really shines in this one, PSH did a good job with the material they gave him (which, to be fair, was not much) and Pitt... Maybe it's me, but at times he gave off this Redford-ish air. Which worked surprisingly well.

I don't mind Samberg... I liked his SNL Weeked Update stuff. The music videos were shot well, but the constant onslaught of sophomoric crudeness never really caught my funnybone. Like the Natalie Portman vid... basically the formula of having Betty White being nasty-crude equals funny... not my cup of tea.

Wolf Creek 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2004432/?ref_=rvi_tt) The original Wolf Creek is one of my favourite horror flicks of the recent years.
The sequel is more like the diary of Mick Taylor, leading to the plot to miss build-up and tension and just be a sequence of events where you are not sure who you are supposed to care for.

JigSaw
Another Saw film.
Another twist - Though I don't know if they could hand-hold you any more through this, they more or less explained it numerous times throughout the movie...matter of fact one thing said clearly outlined what was going on - so the whole "wow, John Cramer is alive" bit just..did not work.
This one felt a bit like one of those later "hellraiser" direct to video psuedo-sequels..they departed from the main theme of the previous movies and essentially made a detective thriller? WAY too much was based around the investigation and not the "game" and victims thereof.
I suppose at least the villain (or...hero?) seemed to be one of the "good" Jigsaws, followed Johns vision correctly and seemed to have good cause. I liked their tricks. They were intelligent.
The traps were pretty boring unfortunately...
Biggest problem - We didn't get anything from where SAW7 ended up, eg: Doctor Gordon and "crew"...if you were looking forward to seeing that like I was, forget it. Not even a damn mention or link.
I'd give this maybe a 5/10.
Elements I liked, strung through a bunch of shit I didn't.

This film was awesome. It doesn't need the 'Hellraiser' tag because it could be a stand alone feature. Yes Pinhead is in here but it really didn't matter. This felt 'undergroundish' in some ways. The storyline was meh. I figured it out early in the film, but thats alright. I loved the 'house' where the 'judgement' lived. Loved all the characters especially The Surgeon. I wanted to post more pictures but those who have not seen it, I want you to see them when you watch it.

Batman Forever (1995) (Netflix)
4/10
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9d/Batman_Forever_poster.png
"Batman must battle former district attorney Harvey Dent, who is now Two-Face and Edward Nygma, The Riddler with help from an amorous psychologist and a young circus acrobat who becomes his sidekick, Robin."
Really disliked the extreme, almost parodied, characters of the film series past the original Batman (1987) (which I didn't think had fakey characters, except for some Joker's gang moments). I thought the script, characterizations and direction were far too simple minded, which crippled the suspense and thickening of the plot. Joel Schumacher directed, and Mr/Mrs Blatchler wrote the story and script, whereas the fist two Batman films were written by Sam Hamm (but not Batman's original film treatise), with Batman Returns screenplay done by Daniel Waters.
I would have thought Val Kilmer would be a good Batman, but he certainly did not carry a dark confidence. I don't know if that wasn't Val's decision, but what happened during the screen test? For what it's worth, I thought Jim Carey did a good job with the Riddler; and the film would have been better without the redundant Two-face performance of Tommy Lee Jones.
I was already not liking the extremely bizarre characterizations and pseudo-reality in Batman Returns, but was held in by the fantastical Tim Burton Team cinematography and direction. So I was out when the next films went further that direction.

They Look Like People (2015)
6.5/10
"Suspecting that people around him are turning into evil creatures, a troubled man questions whether to protect his only friend from an impending war, or from himself."
The film seems more technique than story. On the good side, I think the film cinematography and shot direction is very effective in creating mood, creepiness and suspense, and best of all relays the "possible psychological condition" as well as any film I've seen. The main issue I have with the film is we don't get to know the main characters very well, and I think it feels like it's missing. The dramatization often comes across like mumblecore (a natural performance technique I like, and like here), however it generally stays there, and I'm not sure this was a cinema verite story, or film... I don't think it entirely works.
As we must wait till end before we can decide if it's a horror, science fiction or psychological thriller film, we must admit it, then, that it can't really be any of the above... surely it's a mystery in disguise.

BABE (1995). When my Daughter was younger, used to take her to the movies a lot (101 DALMATIANS-1961 was her first) and I quickly found that Dollar Theatres could be a godsend with tix and concessions being more affordable as well as less crowds. Read a brief synopsis in the paper about "A Talking Pig learns to herd Sheep" which really didn't raise hopes that I would enjoy out, but figured the cost was right and my offspring might enjoy it.
After seeing it, went straight home and told my Wife that "...You just GOTTA see this!" and we went down for the next showing.
Found this back in 1995 and now to be one of the BEST films I've seen, definitely in my Top 10. Gre at script, animatronics, locations, lots of humor (the singing Mice are truly inspired) and a wonderful performance by James Cromwell-couldn't believe this was the same actor who played the goofy Stretch Cunningham on ALL IN THE FAMILY. As far as Babe himself, he's just as cute as can be, although there are some sad moments in here. *****

LaLa Land (2016)
10/10
"While navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future."
It's awesome.
It's a good mix of drama and musical (probably 70% not singing). Music style is mostly standard 1940's Musical with some modern jazz and contemporary... it's not rock or ultra-Broadway. Nice mix of some dancing as well; again standard 1940's Musical dancing, with some modern dashes, nothing extreme or excessive.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
7/10
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bd/Murder_on_the_Orient_Express_teaser_poster.jpg
Various folks are traveling on the Orient Express, traveling through Eastern Europe when there is a murder on the train! The train is delayed on the tracks by a snow slide, and a famous detective Hercule Poirot is tasked to solve the murder before the unpleasantness of foreign police arrive.
I was hoping the producers would twist, that is change, the final outcome of the story (as told in the Agatha Christie novel and the 1974 film), or simply write a new plot based on the book's setting and detective -- especially because the original film (and novel) were so widely seen and read -- because, if you already know the story, characters and who-done-it, it pretty much ruins the most alluring aspect of the film. But no, it's the same.
I don't read anywhere that the use of the title required the film producers render the story the same; so I don't why the story wasn't changed. I'm certain the setting (the Orient Express train) and the character of detective Poirot are the real pleasure and fascination.
As compared to the original film, the cinematography and visual effects are quite beautiful, and the shot movements (and editing) have a pleasant flow and pace. Although, I'm not sure the shots added much to character and plot exposition, casting innuendos, piquing suspicions, and building suspense. This film spends less time displaying detective Poirot interviewing the train riding suspects, but as the plot is unchanged, this is the best and most essential part of the story... and as a result, I thought the story, characters and the film overall were less engaging.

Ya, thinking an avalanche was coming was the only thing that would get them to cut open the tent and get them all to run half-naked down to the trees. And the sound and shaking of military explosions (parachute mines) would trigger the panic. However I read there was no terrain evidence of an actual avalanche, which would have been fairly obvious, and rescuers got to the area pretty quick (according to Wiki). The most bizarre thing is the two crushed chests that somehow didn't display skin trauma. Nothing really explains that. It would take a long fall for that, but I don't read there was any area ridge they could fall off of. But with the skull fracture victim, it's still most likely these folks fell on hard on some rocks. And as you said the woman most likely got eaten by scavengers and the liquid stream took it's toll.

The crushed chests with no "soft tissue" trauma was stumping. They did find the tent crushed for the most part by snow, did that happen before or after they fled.

Yeah, that is bizarre (the chests), even a Yeti would cause soft tissue trauma. ::wink::
Oh, I see, if there was an avalanche that crushed them while they were in the tent, and then they cut it open and fled... maybe because they feared another avalanche was imminent. If that were the case the crushing of chests and skull fractures make sense. But then they would have had to drag the three or so peps, who were basically dead, down to the tree line. Would they drag them, but not even bother to put a coat and/or shoes on? Maybe.
On Wiki they have a pic of the tent exactly how they found it. It's collapsed, but it just looks like it had a little snow fall on it. I'm no avalanche expert, but depending on how big it was, it would likely have swept the tent down the hill, the way they rip trees out of the ground. Plus, one account reads the experts saw no terrain evidence of an avalanche, but who knows. ::confused::

7/10
Prequel to the 1982 film of the same name. Researchers find a very old spaceship and it's frozen occupant.
I think the reviews at the time of it's release were a bit harsh, but certainly not incorrect. That is to say, it's not as good as the 1982 film, and it's much too light in exploring and featuring paranoia. Just when character paranoia heats up, the film is interrupted by more inconsequential action of the CGI, violence and explosive variety. The film is fairly action orientated, but not particularly good at it. It also misses the chance to explore the essence of the new lifeform, and the dire consequences of it's existence.

Red State (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0873886/?ref_=rvi_tt) - It was alright. Not super scary, but a fun watch. Better than Tusk, even though Michael Parks gave a good performance in both. John Goodman was pretty good as well. I liked the way he portrayed the struggle of his character. On the other part, that whiny kid from the Elm Street-remake was kind of annoying.
American Psycho (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144084/?ref_=rvi_tt) - One of my favourite Christian Bale-performances. I first saw this film at a festival with a noisy crowd (he bit when he drops the chainsaw: and the crowd goes wild! ::big grin::) and it's still as solid as ever.

The diretion and acting were all great but the story just didn't interest me. I also feel like that final shot was a big fuck you to the viewer as well as all of Aronofsky's movies, aside from Noah again, follow characters with inner struggles and while her struggles were represented, they weren't properly portrayed. I won't post spoilers but those who have seen it know what I men.

Very true. I watched it with my undivided attention, and it's a mildly entertaining escape film. The cinematography is nice looking and effective. The general plot and setting are primo. So it's hard to screw this up. But both The Thing (1982) especially, and even Thing From Another World (1951), cast a long shadow over this film, and the fans were not happy with how shallow this was. And really, actor Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as Kate Lloyd, does such a great job, she saves this film... to the mild level it reaches. The film lost money (Budget: $35 mil, Boxoffice $32). As we see so often, it was a missed opportunity.
