"The Do Over" 6/10
It was nice to see another person than Sandler in the lead role for a change, even tho he came in very close second. The guy playing the tall swedish/german guy was the funniest person in the movie, not the two leads. And then there was Paula Patton who was just really, really hot.
The story was so-so and kinda lost my interest halfway through as it wasn't really going anywhere. But the ending had a refreshing serious twist which is new for a Sandler flick.

The Others
I... I can't believe I'm going to say this... Shyamalan did it better.
But imagine you're a 14-17 yearold watching it. You might have a much different reaction. I think its actually good from that perspective.
If you're 14-17 year old female, then maybe.
I beg to differ. Being of said age and gender, when I first saw Gingersnaps, I recall not being fond of it at all. I put up with enough of my own "woman issues" in the real world, I wasn't interested in watching a girl go through hers too. A werewolf is often used as a change metaphor, but they take away the metaphor aspect when they have the frickin' change right in the movie. If anything it served as a double ''fuck you'' to the main character.
Didn't the narrator told you what you watched? :p
I think it's a good movie.
Original, cool scenery, decent score, "unhappy" ending,...
I actually wouldn't mind seeing more similar ones.
Want to say the ending was good, but the narrator kind of spoiled that a long time ago with the whole 'poses and is a shapeshifter' thing. Maybe I'm just not big on narration.

Screw reviews and critics. That movie's feckin' funny. Laughed out loud several times.
Best Sandler movie in a long time.

I really liked The Others. I even bought it but still haven't watched it a second time. Sixth Sense might have been better but I saw that one after The Others.
You're not the only one who got annoyed by the narrator.
When I was researching this movie I noticed other people with the same complaint. I didn't bother me. I thought was kinda helpful since I didn't have any subtitles.

Hotel Transylvania is a good start. I view Sandler the same way I view Will Ferral, Ray Ramono, and Ben Stiller. They're better heard and not seen, as they're about as hilarious as hemorrhoids. With voice acting to animation though, completely different scenario. Like taking a gun out of a toddler's hands and giving it to a Marine.

30 days of night (2007)
4/10
After the intriguing setup... in a small isolated Alaskan town, with dogs, phone and electricity killed, survive 30 days of night against vampire creatures... it was unimaginative, cliche, mechanical, repetitive... making it dull in 2016. Because the characters lacked depth and accessibility, the film's attempts at evoking emotion were painfully futile. Good production value.

I loved The Witch. This is set 60 years before the Salem witch trials and is based on reported events of actual witchcraft. Thomasin is a wonderful character who rebels against the repressed Christian warped family values of her father. Hers is a part I would love to play.
The evil and dark atmosphere is there from the start. The Devil finds His way in via a talking goat. Thomasin is tempted. If I were her I would be. Oh yes.

The Do-Over.
Bit stupid in parts...of course, it's Sandler.
However, I wouldn't discourage people to watch it.
I used to quite like Sandler. The wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Airheads, Lil Nicky, Mr Deeds, Bulletproof, 8 crazy nights, I thought Reign over Me was actually pretty interesting too.
I never much got into the two that seem to be universally loved by his fanbase Happy Gilmore and Billy Maddison, they just didn't do anything for me.
Though in my mind he's made some really dogshit straight up dumb and unwatchable movies in the later parts of his career. Won't bother mentioning them, but I'll just say the vast majority after 50-first-dates, which I thought was "ok".
This one though?
Maybe it's because he wasn't playing Sandler?
Maybe it's because he wasn't the lead strictly.
For me though, this was the best Adam Sandler film I've seen in some time.
Not really "among his best", true, but a damn site closer to form than most of what I've seen him do in the last decade.
It's on netflix, give it a look with an open mind.

German director Christian Alvart (Case 39) creates a psychological thriller with shocking twists and turns from the moment it hits the screen. Serial killer Gabriel Engel has brutally slaughtered at least a dozen boys and creates art with their blood. When the psychopath is captured, Berlin police is poised to close the string of murders. But in a nearby village, a simple rural cop, Michael Martens, is consumed with solving the homicide of a young local girl. In spite of the evidence, he is convinced that the crimes are connected. As Michael hopes to get a confession from Gabriel, his inquiries pull him into the twisted mind of the deranged killer. When the investigation takes an unexpected turn, the real killer may be much closer to Michael than ever imagined.

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)
I might have been the only one in the world that wanted a sequel to 2010's criminally underrated Alice in Wonderland, but whether you wanted it or not, here's the sequel. Alice Through the Looking Glass takes place a few years after the first movie after Alice has finished her voyage around the world. When she returns, an old friend from Underland leads Alice through a mirror which leads her back to Underland. She learns that her best friend, the Mad Hatter, has lost his "muchness." The Hatter found the first hat he ever made where his family was killed by the Jabberwocky, and he thinks that his family is still alive, but no one believes him, including Alice. The White Queen devises a plan for Alice to steal a device called the Chronosphere which will allow her to travel back in time and save the Hatter's family. All the characters come back from the first movie, although a lot of them are in smaller roles, but the real standout is newcomer Sacha Baron Cohen as Time. He and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen were surprisingly funny throughout the film and made for some memorable villains. Mia Wasikowska also had a reliably good performance as Alice. Through the Looking Glass doesn't have the thorough world-building that Alice in Wonderland had, but the plot is easier to follow in this one. Along with some breathtaking visuals, Alice Through the Looking Glass should please fans of first film with a fun and exciting return to Underland.

Another good one from Mike Flanagan. Liked the simplicity of the plot and that bit moving finale too. My only complain was Kate Bosworth playing the important role of the mother. She's like another Kristen Stewart, who as an actress only possess certain type of emotion/reaction all throughout a movie that eventually becomes annoying to watch, resulting a dull & to some extent, failed portrayal of a character that has significant part in the movie.
Btw, in that old family picture with their deceased son, was that really Thomas Jane in that pic?!? I think that was another guy! ::roll eyes::

Ditto! or a crossover flick with Elm Street! as that kid got enough talent to bring Freedy into the real world! Or she could take her into "Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters" at the end...by revealing the fact that the whole story was actually set in the X-Men universe! ::smile::

Project Almanac (2015)
6/10
A "time-travel fun and consequences" teen drama film, needlessly shot as found footage. Somewhat fun film, with decent production value, that seems to be missing scenes, leaving various plot lines confusing and unsatisfying. OK if your looking for something light, fast and teenie.
Primer (2004) is much better time-travel film (that Almanac steals from) and much more complex. The Butterfly Effect (2004) is better still, much less complicated, better effects with quite a punch; though I seem to be in the minority in praise for the film.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
This seems to be the year of superheroes vs superheroes with DC and Marvel releasing their tentpoles, Batman v Superman and Civil War, and now Fox has released one for the X-Men with the lackluster X-Men: Apocalypse. In Apocalypse, the world's first and most powerful mutant, aptly named Apocalypse, has woken up from a slumber after thousands of years to find that society is not revering him as a god as they used to. Apocalypse throws a tantrum and assembles a team of four mutants to destroy modern civilization and create a new world order. As the fate of the world hangs in the balance, Mystique and Professor X assemble a new team of young mutants to save mankind. It seemed like having God and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse be the villains would make the movie at least somewhat interesting, but, really they don't do anything for a majority of the 144 minute running time. For most of Apocalypse's story, he's just assembling his team while the Horsemen he's already recruited just sit around while he convinces another mutant to join the group. That's not only an issue with the Horsemen, unfortunately. Almost all of the other mutants, Mystique, Professor X, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, etc, wait around until something bad happens. There's a ton of interesting characters in this film that aren't given anything interesting to do. Almost all of the mutants spend the entire movie feeling sorry for themselves, and there's really no good action until the very end. Even the final fight scene gets underwhelming at certain points. At times, I felt like I was watching a bad Roland Emmerich disaster flick. One positive is that Evan Peters steals every scene as Quicksilver, giving a great personality to the character. He was the one thing I wholeheartedly enjoyed about the movie. X-Men: Apocalypse has a couple moments of visual flair, some decent action and clear ambition, but its muddled plot and bland characterizations make it a disappointing misstep.

The film is not a gore fest or campy like the name, to me, implies. Its very slow. I'm worn out today so I was able to sit and finish it, but I think this is a film to not see. My impression is that the film's creators thought they had a great idea for a scene in a movie and built the rest around that using what they figured was a basic horror movie template. Things happen in the film for no reason. The lead up to the final sequences is a waste. And of course the without a point/gratuitous breasts shot.

Holy fuck was this good. It took me too long to watch this. Pure evil. I do have some thoughts. People may disagree. Born like this or not nurtured enough to form bonds with mother/parents. The parenting sucked here. She never seemed to even want him. She was always thinking about the past and traveling. When that baby was crying and difficult, I woulda used all my power to comfort/bond/sooth my child before anything. She seemed bothered. ::mad:: The mother and Kevin were kinda the same minus the psychopathness. Haunting film but I do have to say Kevin was hot as fuck, well at least the actor playing him was. The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Three years after he blew the doors off cinemas across the country with one of the biggest modern horror movies, The Conjuring, James Wan comes back with a true sequel to The Conjuring, aptly titled The Conjuring 2. Often, horror sequels try to get too big or too flashy and end up being far inferior to their predecessors. The Conjuring 2 is certainly bigger and flashier, but James Wan has some gift for taking a generic storyline and making it scary as hell. The Conjuring 2 takes place six years after the original film in Enfield, London. It's based on the Enfield Haunting, one of the most well-documented paranormal cases of all time and was labeled "England's Amityville." In this haunting the Hodgson family, a single mother and her four children, are being tormented by a spirit and call on several paranormal investigators to help them, including Ed and Lorraine Warren. The case quickly turns into a media circus with allegations that the haunting may be a hoax, and the Warrens have to decide if the kids are playing an elaborate prank or if the Hodgsons are living in a very real nightmare. Being a horror sequel, or really just a movie sequel in general, it's expected that this movie is going to up the stakes and flashy imagery compared to the original film. The Conjuring 2 is no different. There really isn't a scene that's as brilliant as the hide-and-clap game with Lili Taylor from the first Conjuring. However, at a staggering 134 minutes, James Wan packs in a ton of surprisingly durable scares. After a great opening sequence, Wan gives us about 5 minutes to get acquainted with the Hodgsons before already scaring us silly with the first night at the Enfield house. There's tons of agonizingly long tracking shots that ratchet up the tension for an incredibly long time. What's great is that not all of these shots end with a jump scare. Be warned though because if there is a jump scare, it's perfect. There's not a single cheap jump in this movie. The "scare scenes" themselves are very long; once one of those great tracking shots is done, you'll go to another person for an equally scary scene. Because there's so much suspense and so many scares in the movie, the 134 minute running time never feels too long. It feels just right, although the scares might be exhausting by the end of the movie. Wan also has a knack for making an old scare new again. He can somehow make a tired jump scare scary again, but at the same time, it's not quite as fresh as it was the first time. That's what holds back The Conjuring 2 from surpassing the original film. The Conjuring 2 does have some heart though. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are great as the married ghostbusters, and the Hodgson family is a likable group of people to hang out with for two and half hours. Madison Wolfe steals the show as Janet, who gets put through the wringer throughout the whole movie. Even if it doesn't reach the heights of its predecessor, The Conjuring 2 is an incredibly scary thrill ride that'll be hard to top this summer. I do have to admit that I did scream very loudly once.

Personally didn't like Super Size Me. I don't see the point in showing what you'd look like after a month on a McDonald's diet. To show that you'll get fat? No one is going to eat McDonald's for breakfast, lunch and dinner every single day, and most people are aware that fast food will make you fat if you eat too much of it.

My first time viewing Super Size Me: I'm never eating that toxic garbage ever again! ::shocked::
Me 3 weeks later: Yes, can I get a big mac and a large fry please??
I rarely eat Mcdonalds these days, but as a teenager that's really all I lived off of. And pizza of course. ::smile::

Add me to that list. McDonalds, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Popeyes - if I could find one, Wendy's - same with Popeyes, were the quick go to places to eat.

I think back in the 80s and 90s it might have been different. Maybe no one had something like McDonalds every single day. But fast food 5 out of 7 days wouldn't be exaggerating for some people. McDonalds sells a full menu too. So it's not really advertised as bad food. Their breakfast is normal American food for the most part. Many times growing up I loved cheeseburgers and might have one for lunch and dinner.

This was pretty good. Typical rape/revenge film. They didn't show any of the rapes but the two main chicks were pretty good showing the after effects of the attacks.....and there is a pig mask and the dude actually snorts in it. That was cool. FX is great of the revenge parts but only a few were shown in detail. Some of the scenes felt like music videos and I wish some of the actors were more enthusiastic about their parts.
....and I can't believe I spelled enthusiastic right. ::smile::

Well made, some decent tension, a few good jump scares, but ultimately I found it had nothing new to add to the worn-out poltergeist-in-a-house genre. In fact, I didn't understand some crucial motivations. If you can enlighten me, check out this thread (http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67201).

Good tension build-up and good action, but the dialogue was often heavy handed American hero worship which detracted from the realism of the action.

A visual spectacle. Set-pieces, CGI and costume were all excellent. Managed to avoid being convoluted, but the editing, especially during the action pieces at the end, needed more clarity. Kudos for the attempts at levity from the characters, but unfortunately the script didn't pull it off. I enjoyed it overall and am hoping for sequels.

Does the action pieces well. Butler's dodgy American accent is distracting, and a lot of the performances, even from Morgan Freeman, feel like they used the first take. Once Butler's character hits his stride and you realise he's a complete psychopath, it becomes enjoyable. Enjoyable but completely forgettable midnight movie, for when you want to turn your brain off.

Masked killers stop by a couple's secluded house.
Some nicely framed, lit and creepy shots. But the story got aimless and a little tedious. Didn't seem well thought out. Very poor character development, coupled with cliche and repetitive scenes. Often times we don't know what the characters are trying to accomplish, if they're succeeding or failing.

The Neon Demon (2016)
Director Nicolas Winding Refn returns to the big screen with his lesbian cannibal necrophiliac thriller The Neon Demon that got one of Cannes infamous "boos" (which realistically means nothing). There's also this whole thing about the modeling industry too. Elle Fanning plays Jesse, a 16 year old aspiring model in LA, gets signed by an agency for her natural beauty and youth. However, as she quickly rises through the ranks, other models start to become jealous and will stop at nothing to steal her beauty and youth in a world that's literally eat or be eaten. Refn can certainly stage some elaborate visuals because the entire movie is eye candy. There's a color scheme reminiscent of Suspiria, some hypnotically beautiful visual set pieces all put alongside an awesome 80's-style synth score. Refn makes a clear distinction from the high society of the modeling industry and Jesse's real life living in a run-down motel with a sleazy owner. While the modeling world has all the fantastic visuals, the real world is portrayed in a gritty way that shows that living the high life in LA might not really be as great as one might think. The actual plot is difficult to follow at points since the story sometimes takes a backseat to the visuals, but it's interesting enough and even pretty disturbing at times that it'll keep you engaged. There's a slew of crazy scenes involving cannibalism and necrophilia that more hardcore viewers might enjoy, just don't go in expecting another Cannibal Holocaust. The disturbing parts are more subtle and slow than your usual gorefest. The ending especially will either shock you or infuriate you. The Neon Demon is going to divide its audience based on if they're willing to stomach the more difficult scenes, but it's a visually stunning, often disturbing and poignant satire of the modeling industry in Los Angeles.

The Shallows (2016)
It's been a pretty dismal summer movie season with more unwanted sequels than one could imagine (who really wanted Now You See Me 2?), so it's a bit of a breath of fresh air when a fun and simple shark thriller rolls into theaters, and a surprisingly decent one at that. The Shallows is about Nancy, played by Blake Lively, a med school student and recreational surfer who travels to a secluded beach in Mexico where her late mother once surfed when she was a baby. Her alone time is ruined when she gets too far from the shore and a shark attacks her, forcing her to take refuge on a rock. Stranded two hundred yards from the shore, Nancy has to outwit the shark and try to get back to her dad and sister before becoming shark bait. In a year filled with pretentious sequels coming 15 years too late, watching a good old-fashioned non-pretentious thriller will come to a relief to many. It never takes itself too seriously, although never venturing into camp territory, and it stays suspenseful for its brief 87 minute running time. There's even a little bit of good gore thrown in there too. The Shallows is more of a survival thriller than Blake Lively vs. The Shark, so it's more suspenseful than brutal and intense. Luckily, Blake Lively gives a great performance as Nancy, a resourceful and insanely likable heroine. She's the only face on screen for about 80 minutes of the film, so it's good that she made her presence likable. The Shallows is a pure popcorn thriller: suspensful, taut and fun.

TWO EVIL EYES (1991). Had heard this was going to be four Poe stories with Carpenter and Cronenberg joining Argento and Romero, but things did not work out. Too bad as I really wanted to like this more, but dragging out two Poe stories into almost two hours is really two...er...too much. Not even the Corman flicks had this much padding. Enjoyed the Romero one pretty much, but Argento's still has me feeling he is a dazzling stylist, but his films just leave me cold. **1/2

'Bigfoot vs Zombies' (2016)
Plot: IMDB
A scientist creates a toxic cocktail that is accidentally unleashed into the local population and a nearby police "body farm" - creating a small army of flesh-eating zombies - and only one creature of legend, a killer in his own right, can stop the growing hordes of the undead and save humanity.
Phantom's Review: Dear Gods! What a turd. There are bad movies that are fun and there are bad movies that are just bad...this one is absolutely one of the BAD ones. A guy in a gorilla suit fighting a bunch of folks wearing Halloween masks and some actors(?) spouting out brainless (no pun intended) dialogue. Avoid this film at all costs unless you're having a (really) Bad Movie Night .

5/10
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b4/Jack_the_Giant_Slayer_poster.jpg/220px-Jack_the_Giant_Slayer_poster.jpg
"The ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack, a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds."
Director Brian Singer brings you Jack in the Beanstalk. The opening begins with two separate children, and their respective parent, telling the old story of the menacing giants and the savior king. It hints of interesting mystical themes with monks seeking God and the power of heir-ship, but these themes are not explored. This opening narration, and accompanying visuals and sound, is by far the best part of the film. It's very well done. The rest of the film will make you wish they told the new story the same way... along with 10 other short stories to fill the hour and 50 minutes.
After the opening narration, it seemed like three paragraphs of story are slowly dipped on the screen, like Chinese water torture.
The giants are CG, which may have made a few scenes easier to produce, but turned out to be a horrible decision. The facial rendering of giants was both lifeless and numbing.
The story was extremely cliche for 2016. I don't know if this film was for children, adults or both, but seems to miss all those marks.

I liked Green Room myself, I have a fondness for berserk skinheads. I think they are the perfect shock troops, and should be utilized in our brutal army to crush the middle east and provide free oil for everyone, yaaaaay!
However, dogs are hurt, and that is a crying shame. Hopefully part 2 will just be nazi dogs eating people and at the end they are full and they take a nap, muzzles covered with blood and bellies full.
I saw The Shallows, I enjoyed it. It has a big shark gobbling people up, so if you like that give it a go! I think it's better than that one in the water-soaked mall and that other one where they are treading water because they forget to lower the boat ladder.

Despite being an entertaining horror flick it had one flaw that really dragged it down. The actions. Wasn't plausible whatsoever.
How Patrick Stewart and Anton Yelchin (If you know nothing about this tragic belated talented guy watch Hearts in Antlantis and Odd Thomas) could be involved with this is a big mystery to me.
Like Deadbeat I would conclude this as underwhelming.

Film of the year for me. I loved the 'intelligent' little nazi, the adequate BJJ and the dogs.
Same here, I liked it a lot. Maybe it helped that I had no idea what it was about before going in. I have it as my #4 ranked film of the year.

I usualy find it difficult to enjoy movies with kids as main characters but, because this film was so good, I was able to look past that for the most part. Maybe a teeny tiny bit slow at times, but that would be probably my only criticism. Cinematography was a m a z i n g.

The Russia House (1990), The Constant Gardener (2005) & A Most Wanted Man (2014)
https://s32.postimg.org/pn75mlgbp/JLC.jpg
Final phase of my recent marathon on John le Carre film adaptations. Liked them all but surely TCG was the best here. AMWN was an intense modern espionage tale with a very realistic & frustrating conclusion. TRH was more of a romantic thriller with backdrop of the final days of Cold War era - just before the fall of Soviet Union. Bit aged but Michelle Pfeiffer was looking stunning.

I liked this movie a lot, but I found that the realism of the POV style clashed a bit with the outlandishness of the main villain. It was like he had walked in from another set. I accepted it at the end but in the beginning I found it somewhat jarring, and as far as I could tell there was nothing to explain his ability, which was an odd choice.

What makes Chemical Peel a B? It looks fairly bad. What did you like about it?
Considering the budget, it was a finely made character driven thriller with decent amount of gore & tensions. It's got little echoes of Stephen King's The Mist, Roth's Cabin Fever or even the little known, beautiful indie-gem Right at Your Door!
Somewhat like The Descent, it starts out with a tragic car accident. And then some time later, the bunch of lady friends make their way to a very remote cabin to have a visit, a few drinks and to celebrate. In The Descent, it was to celebrate that Sarah finally got over her tragedy, enough to go on a fun adventurous tour.
In Chemical Peel, one of their own is about to be wed; Rae hosts her sister Angela's bachelorette party, and along with a few friends, they go about getting drunk and having a boring old time until Angela inevitably brings up the car accident their younger sister died in, blaming Rae for it since she was driving.
In the morning, the ladies wake up to find a mysterious fog outside, along with a couple of dead birds. The TV reports that a train crash has caused some unknown chemicals leaked in the area and everyone is urged to stay inside. but being indoors eventually turns just as deadly as being outside.
But yeah, surely it wasn't a perfect or great film; it has it flaws. Mainly they dragged it as far as they could with a few annoying characters & their stupid decisions or activities but still I found it enjoyable & worth a watch as it was technically well shot film and the cast delivered a good job. The make-up and gore works were nicely handled. When chemical spill slowly seeps into the taped-up cabin and the sickness takes over and other poor choices are made, Chemical Peel let the blood flow all over.

A pretty well written & executed Tarantino style "who-dunnit" comedy-thriller; even at one point some of the characters were trying to recall the name of a movie that resembles some sort of same scenario that they are in...one of them was only sure that there was "Dogs" in the title!

A shark who goes against its own behavior and nature itself just to terrorize a loan person (despite an entire whale to chew on) breaks the willing suspension of disbelief concept. My partner and I rate films on a scale of 1-5 pin heads and this got 1 (reluctantly)
