Could have been better but not a bad effort, IMO. From Fulci to Carpenter & Cronenberg, a decent throwback to 80s Body horror & sci-fi horror.

In one word - fantastic!
The ambience throughout the film was so densely creepy, you could cut a knife through it. Had a cheap jump scare very early in the film which made me go "Oh no! Surely not another one with those?!", but I am glad that I was proved wrong.
The whole film is built on a veritable bed of tenseness, so much so that you are left squirming and muttering "What the ****?!" under your breath most of the time. And the huge "Oh no, that didn't just happen!" scene at around the 50-minute mark adds to the sweating.
Just 2 major actors, but both of them owned the scenery. And of course, the beautiful yet achingly haunting Jane Doe.
When you end up chewing your fingernails, you know that you watched something which was really damn good. This has become one of my favorites from recent years.
Bring on a sequel as soon as you can, director of TrollHunter!

The Tilden father & son have a cat, which was apparently one of the few things left back by Tilden Sr's deceased wife.
It prowls around hunting mice, snarls by baring all it's teeth when Jane Doe is wheeled in for the autopsy, and is later found inside an AC vent.
Tilden Jr pulls it out, and then *that* happens.

I get the feeling other horror/Hellraiser fans don't care for this movie, but Jesus do I ever love it. If it's a bad movie then it's a guilty pleasure to say the least. That unearthing of the coffin scene still gives me chills. Clawing out your own throat? Fucking brutal, man. Still, not as horrific as say, the second Hellraiser. I watched almost all of the Hellraiser movies a few years ago ending with that one and I felt it was easily the worst one. It was probably the final twist that did it in. I can't remember much about that movie.

It's a ton of fun! Maybe you need a little understanding of the 1970's to fully appreciate the film, but the film manages to be completely familiar at the same time you don't know what's going to happen next. I found the story and characters delightfully accessible. This is an exciting action adventure nicely shot with well timed comic relief. Back to back: Logan (2017) & Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Logan was fantastic. One of the best comic based films out there, and easily the high point of the franchise.
Ghost in the Shell was a goddamn mess. A pretty looking mess, but still a mess. Soulless, dumb regressive bullshit.
Side note - has anyone tried this newfangled "4DX" nonsense some theatres are offering now? It's like a theme park ride: the seats move, there's huge fans, they spray you with water, pump scents into the theatre - on top of your standard 3-D, of course. Like William Castle gone corporate. Ghost in the Shell was my first time trying it out, and probably my last. Super distracting and unnecessary. There's a fight scene in a reservoir kind of thing which was really cool with the spray, but otherwise it just seemed arbitrary.
Used in moderation, or as part of a schlocky 50's revival deal I could theoretically see it being a cool gimmick, but so far I've just got a headache.

What did you like about Logan? You mean best of the Xmen series?
I thought it was a bit dull and clique. The sentimentality seemed hokey. I didn't get the girl, and Prof X seemed so detached (though I know he was sick), heck everyone seemed detached to me, but the film was really more character driven, so the lack of it was a dagger. Really, I enjoyed Logan the least of all the Xmen films.
Sorry Ghost in the Shell sucked. I liked the original animated version... I knew they had the material to work with.
The MGM Movie-Coasters (in Florida) were fantastic! The Simpson's Coaster blew me away. You know what those are? You sit in a coaster that 'moves' -- giving you centrifugal forces, but you're really in a theatre watching a 3D-film screen... I really didn't even understand how it worked, but it was great.

MR WOODCOCK (2007). Pretty funny flick about the Evil JR High Gym teacher (I had one in 8th Grade) who runs roughshod on a fat kid. He grows up, loses weight, becomes a success and when visiting Mom, finds that she is dating Mr Woodcock! Billy Bob thornton is very dry as the title character and even though Susan Sarandon is slumming playing the Mom, still looks like she's having fun. ***

My reviews that I never posted because the forum went down before I got the chance last time.
*Reviewed in the order I watched them.
The Conjuring -
I'm late to this one but I was surprised by The Conjuring. I think it's one of the most well made modern horror movies I've seen. For those who haven't seen it, I'll try not to spoil it as from the title alone, I didn't know what kind of horror movie it was going to be. I only vaguely heard of the spinoff called Annabelle and thought that The Conjuring would involve her.
The movie breaks almost every single stupid thing that happens in horror movies rule which I thought was cool. Right at the beginning a character states "you did what?" in almost shock at the stupidity of another character. Also, we also get reasons for why characters are doing stuff that would seem dumb in lesser movies. The only thing I wasn't fond of was a trope that happens in animated movies with a certain character. That was the one thing that could have been left out or rewritten somehow. But this is a really good horror movie. I like the hero couple as well.
The Cabining -
I watched this because it was about a couple guys writing a horror movie and I'm still sitting on a few horror movie projects myself. Plus the trailer was ok. I thought it might be worth watching after noticing a few cute actresses too. But it really felt amateurish with High School or College type acting at times and almost home movie framing. There were few good shots in the movie. I thought only the actress who played a foreign type was good. Apparently she even did the vocals for the credits song. I usually like stuff like that when a performer does more than just act in a movie. But other than that, you won't miss anything by passing on this movie.
It Follows -
For It Follows I had my few drinks before watching and was paranoid as hell during and after the movie. This is the real deal. It shows what a piece of crap something like The Cabining is. It Follows is worth the hype. It's very close to the original Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and the feel of Friday the 13th movies. The director is a guy who obviously loves those classic horror movies and made his own version instead of going the bad remake route.
It Follows made me debate if I even want to make that ultimate Friday the 13th project that I've been working on. I did have some issues with the movie but then I thought about it some more and realized something.
SPOILER TEXT!!!
At first I was a bit disappointed in the ending. The final result at the swimming pool and lack of reveal of the creature. I saved some article links before seeing the movie, one in particular from Tarantino as I was curious what he thought. But then I think I concluded something that I haven't seen posted around the Internet. At least not yet. Even though the movie is almost the ultimate slasher in that if you have sex you will die. The creature itself isn't in the mold of a Jason, Myers, or Freddy but is more like The Thing. What we see in the swimming pool is the real form of the creature.
It's too bad this movie didn't make more money. It deserved to be promoted far more than all the recent horror remakes. But this is a classic horror movie not to be missed.
Girl House -
This movie is a mess. I thought going from the trailer which I watched some time ago that it would be good. But it pretty much gives a reason to hate the shallow, show off, manipulative girls right from the beginning. The movie almost shows a hatred of them with the vicious death scenes. Especially the origin kill and one with a sex object. They just took the whole girls stripping on the Internet for money, added a killer complete with origin story, fairly good cinematography, pretty girls, and threw together a movie. I really didn't care for it at all.
Why Horror -
This is a horror documentary. There are a few of these on Starz. Just an interesting talk about horror movies and why people watch them. It won't do horror fans any harm to check this one out.
The Conjuring 2 -
This is a good sequel. I like that if you are paying attention there is stuff going on the in the background. However the basement of one house seemed like too much of a horror set. I can't imagine someone's basement really looking like that. I would think a city or town would condemn the house if that was beneath it. But other than that the couple from the original are the stars again. They are just a cool horror team and you care about them and their investigations.
The Darkness -
I thought this was going to be good. It has Radha Mitchell from Silent Hill and in many ways it seemed like she was playing a similar character. Also Kevin Bacon so I figured it couldn't be that bad. And it does start off ok when they are in the mountains. But then it just starts to feel generic and thrown together as a quick buck type horror movie.
Within -
Another waste of time "horror" movie apparently ripped from the headlines. It's not really believable as without spoiling it, the monster in this movie comes off like one of the more popular X-Files monsters. And the twist is so obvious you can't really call it a twist. In many ways, this could be similar to the remake of When a Stranger Calls as the movie basically focuses on the daughter character. But there isn't anything interesting about the sets or character to make this a passable horror movie. And I hated the ending.
Bait -
I was waiting to watch this in 3D but as there was nothing else on I just watched it normally. I guess there is nothing really special about this movie though except the 3D gimmick with the shark. Another ripped from the headlines horror movie with the focus on people trapped in a supermarket while a shark swims around due to something that happens with the environment.
Hellraiser: Revelations -
Easily the worst in the series. And the guy who wrote this is writing and directing the next one. Which is a really bad sign. The whole thing feels direct to video and low budget. I believe I read here that the studio makes these quick sometimes to keep the rights. And this one is obvious. Also Pinhead is played by a different actor in this one. One thing you can say about the other bad Hellraiser movies is that at least Pinhead is consistent.
Purge Election Day -
I'm part of the problem watching these Purge movies. I guess the first one had a good story pitch to get made. But it didn't go into discussion on the real effects of the Purge. And it's been like that ever since. Some commentary at the opening then violence. At least this should be the last one.
Back to back: Logan (2017) & Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Logan was fantastic. One of the best comic based films out there, and easily the high point of the franchise.

I think if they made a movie specifically for 4DX then it could be ok like a theme park ride. To help you believe you are in the moment with the characters. I remember the Terminator 3D movie ride was like that in the early days. This was some 20 years ago I think? But for the average movie it will be a gimmick. People were telling me that Ghost in the Shell was bad. Anime geeks and Scarlett fanboys were trying to promote it. But nothing could save that disaster except starting over from the beginning.

Pride prejudice and zombies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1374989/?ref_=rvi_tt) - 6.5/10 - Predictable romance, but some fun bits. I liked the contrast between the gore (could have done with a bit more, though) and the stiff upper lip.

Did you like Alien Covenant?
It was a fine film in terms of visuals & effects.
As for story and continuing the alien storyline, meh. So much anticipation built up after the Prometheus debacle and Scott just rehashes the same story with elements of the original Alien thrown in.
Neither the Neomorph nor the Xenomorph were scary, and we had another crew of 15 for which nobody cared about. At least Elizabeth Shaw had a strong vibe going in Prometheus, whereas Daniels was just another crew member in Covenant. Disappointing.
The only one who did anything worth his salt was Fassbender, but there's only so much one talent can do, in a film designed to dazzle and make you go oohs and aahs by throwing a Xenomorph into the fray.
Ridley has definitely lost his touch. High time someone replaces him and continues the mythology. I dread to imagine what all they will conjure up for the 3rd part, and connect it with the original Alien. Whatever it will be, I am sure we should brace ourselves for another disappointment.
My rating would be 2 and half stars. I think I liked Prometheus better than this one, plotholes aside.

In a way it was like a slasher, introducing characters just to kill them off one by one in gruesome fashion. But that being said: spines out!

Couldn't agree more! After all these years, Ridley tried to give us an Alien origin story...and surprised or actually disappointed to see him came up with this lame idea of an android went rogue & created this whole mess! Miserably killing off the Engineers from the plot (expected to see & know more about them), this movie was more of like a daring fan-effort with their own convoluted version of a forced origin story rather than something came out from the original writer & director of the franchise.
Instead of wasting time & money on this so called "origin trilogy" or whatever, I think it'd be lot better & interesting if they launched an anthology-style 3 or 4 part independent series with different promising directors i.e. Neill Blomkamp, Denis Villeneuve, Matt Reeves or Daniel Espinosa (the guy who made a solid Alien-esque sci-fi horror LIFE this year!) to treat the Alien mythology in their own way.

Ok movie about an 80's VCR game.
Acting and characters were better than average, the bits of blood and gore are decent, story was ok but overal I felt like there was missing something.

May be overall not as great as Raimi's Spider-Man 2 but still quite a fun & grounded teen superhero flick for MCU. Loved Tom Holland's take on Spider-Man and Michael Keaton as Vulture. Stark's update on Spidey's new suit (Suit Lady - Karen, voiced by Jennifer Connelly) was somewhat over the top though in the middle segment.
Anyway, another solid Marvel entertainer, the 2nd best superhero flick of the year after LOGAN; by a margin, I guess but now Wonder Woman comes third, IMO.

I give it an A as well. Homecoming is the best Spider-Man film overall, even beating out Spider-Man 2, IMO.
Tom Holland is hands down superb and is the best live action representation of the character, bar none! Tobey Maguire was great as Peter Parker but was ok as Spider-Man.
Andrew Garfield was awesome as Spider-Man and wasn't to bad as Parker but didn't quite capture The Web Singers alter ego.
Holland portrayed both sides of The Wall Crawler to a tee. He showed PP's angst and frustration in his normal, every day life as an unpopular, nerdy kid; getting bullied constantly. But when he slapped on the costume he had SP's wit and humour down pat while still making you realize it was Peter underneath the mask. It's my favorite super-hero movie of the year.

Wonder Woman
I was impressed... out of all the DC films we've gotten in the past decade, this was probably the best I've seen. It was brighter, bolder, and had the strength of a superhero without the overkill on angst that we're so used to seeing from DC these days. The scene were Wonder Woman takes back ''No Man's Land'' still gives me chills thinking about it (how friggin hot she was aside), it was a game changer for superhero movies, and I hope others take note from it and improve.
SPOILERS!! -highlight below to see-
Of course it couldn't last though... The end got REALLY hammy. At one point when Wonder Woman finishes off the bad guy and all should be well but it isn't, she realizes that humans aren't perfect, and sometimes people are just horrible for the sake of being horrible. It was an interesting take and I enjoyed it at that point. But then Aries shows up and it just went to shit. Although I enjoy seeing David Thewlis playing a badass villain... I'm sorry, hun, but you're just not mean to be the God of War.
The movie takes place during WWI, before the evil of Hitler... so how does Aries being DEAD explain any other violence there after? After the big fight soldiers from both sides just start hugging and getting all affectionate, and it seems there's a very obvious difference with Aries's death. It just doesn't make sense. It could've ended on a high note, they instead went a cheesy safe route that just didn't work.
That is to say it's not worth a buy when it comes out on DVD and after a while drops in price. I'll certainly look to grab it to savor that battlefield scene again.
Next up is Thpidah-Mayun! ::smile::

Wonder Woman (2017)
8/10
People were mentioning some surprises, or surprising things, in Wonder Woman. I don't know what they were referring to... ???? The 'who was Ares' was going to be a surprise -- which isn't surprising... I'm assuming people meant something(s) besides that....???
It had a good display of values: love, self sacrifice, peace, and refreshingly... grace. We really don't want to always get exactly what we deserve. In fact we are so fortunate we don't. It's a concept probably little explored these days.
"Wonder Woman as invincible god" -- can't be injured/killed... boring!!!
I always had a problem with characters/superheroes who were basically invincible. It's really boring. LIke Superman fighting another Superman or a Thor... they hit each other in the face... with their fist, or a tank... and what is that supposed to do anyway? It appears to hurt, or stun them... just how exactly is it hurting or stunning them? It's never explained... Can't really be injured or killed by hits, so what's the point, no consequences... it's so boring.
So they are going to have Wonder Woman be a 'god'? She's as strong and invincible as Superman, and doesn't even have a "Kryptonite" to harm her? Boring. These 'invincible superhero' fights are so ridiculous -- like the Wonder Woman Vs Ares fight -- so they smack each other with a tank and it knocks them back without injuring them... why are we watching this? If they have a consequential attack, please just get to it already... we've seen a 1000 of these pointless CG fights already... so boring.

Well said. I saw the soldiers hugging, but I couldn't tell they were from different sides from the shots... I just kinda assumed it. In actual history... the week of Christmas 1914 French, German, and British soldiers crossed trenches to exchange seasonal greetings, talk, ventured into no man's land on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to mingle and exchange food and souvenirs. There were joint burial ceremonies and prisoner swaps, while several meetings ended in carol-singing. A great F-U to the gods of war.

lolz! Valid points though. On other thing that lately I was thinking about DC films is about its Villains. From MAN OF STEEL to the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE...so far most of villains were either extraterrestrial, supernatural or mythological super human character(s). The thing is other than psychotic Luthor in BvS, DC is throwing villains with otherworldly abilities or characteristics. This may get somewhat 'boring' in time or 'less interesting' than Marvel where you can find a good number of human character villains also leading the main bad guy role in MCU i.e. Iron Man films, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War and lastly Spider-Man: Homecoming which is providing diversity in stories, characters & their settings.

The director who gave us some exceptionally good & quality films in past 15 years i.e. Memories of Murder (2003), The Host (2006), Mother (2009) and Snowpiercer (2013). This is a brave take on animal abuse with a little doze of corporate satire through a moving adventure tale from start to finish. Found this absolutely beautiful and quite heart breaking at times.

The writer of Julia's Eyes (2010), Oriol Paulo's 2nd feature film after 2012's awesome Spanish thriller The Body. Though not as great as his earlier works & you may get the 'twist' halfway through but still this is a pretty well-crafted, intense 'who or how-done-it' style another good Spanish thriller.
Recommended.

ANDRE (1994). After seeing the statue in Rockport Maine last month, decided to revisit the film after not seeing in some time. A seal is adopted by Keith Carradine and his family and the film details how Andre became a celebrity around the area (early 1960's). Lots of good vintage props like cars, TVs, music etc. While the film is geared towards children (and it seems a couple of gags are overused), adults should like it as well. Entertaining, funny and, if I may say so, charming little film. ***1/2

Excellent motion-capture + CGI animation once again worked remarkably for Andy Serkis to deliver another amazing performance as Caesar and that's one of the main reasons for this 3rd & Best installment in the reboot-trilogy to made it a heart-warming experience at the theater. A very human tale about the survival of the Apes and fall of the humans...quite deep & moving at times. Highly recommended.

Though conceptually they are connected but I think it won't be fair to compare them right away. May be time will tell but the thing is both set of the films (originals & this reboot/prequel series) resonates kind of different sensitivity or essence and political tone based on their different time period and technological advancements in story telling through celluloid. Like to appreciate the way that this time the studio or the men behind this series just didn't rebooted the series like most other similar contemporary 'reboots' of classic/acclaimed movie/TV series of past but they treated the theme with care & patience particularly in terms of main character & story development area, somewhat like an effort to build a sort of a bridge towards the originals for today's young audience. Even I'm now quite excited and seriously considering to have a special P.O.T.A movie-marathon soon by re-watching only the originals.

ED WOOD (1994). The best film Tim Burton/Johnny Depp made and considering the subject, it's almost appropriate it didn't do big box office. Lots of good performances throughout, but the late Martin Landau (just a couple of days ago too::sad::) is simply wonderful as a delicate, wounded still proud Bela Lugosi, richly deserving the Oscar, even if the film isn't entirely factual. ****1/2

Wish Upon (2017)
Terrible writing and terrible PG-13 editing. Joey King tried as hard as she could to salvage the movie, and she gives a pretty good performance. Almost all the kills are lifted directly from the Final Destination movies, but the deaths are so bloodless that they don't have the surprise of the movies they're ripping off. For some reason, I can't completely hate this movie, though. It's got some camp value at least. I've heard the director has an unrated version for the DVD release that's much bloodier, and honestly, I might take the time to watch that version.

It's more the horrible script and PG-13 final destination kills that ruin the movie than the concept itself. If you must watch it, I'd wait for the home release because the director has said the uncut version is much better and pretty gruesome.

I just saw Wish Upon I found it enjoyable. I wasn't expecting Gore and tons of blood and got what I expected. I wouldn't mind giving the unrated version a go when it comes out. I give the theatrical cut a 6. A clichéd story but the cast; it's acting and directing make it worth watching at least once.

Some films rely solely on atmosphere, and this is one of those.
You keep having the nervy, edgy feeling that something is very wrong throughout the first 40-odd minutes, but what follows is something far more sinister and dark. Even though you feel you saw the twist coming, it's still quite a WTF?! moment - followed by a few more.
Do give this one a spin, if you haven't already.

Dunkirk (2017)
https://s2.postimg.org/t2zu2if2h/Dunk.jpg
As for the 'critical praise' goes, I understand Nolan tried to capture here a macro point of view of the historic event/evacuation story of Dunkirk but it turned out another disappointment (after Interstellar)! Thing is most of the epic & classic war movies comes with an individual or a set of characters, backed up by a rich screenplay that eventually made us started to care for them while we witnessed the horror of war to gradually unfold with a graceful touch of heart or humanity at some point in the story. In Nolan's Dunkirk, the single character development was minor issue with mere importance, as I guess he was more interested to depict the event as a "character" itself that's facing a struggle to survive in one of the most awfully cornered situations in the history of world wars for an allied force. Most of the "major characters" were either desperately trying to escape or determined to follow the course of their duties without much portraying emotional aspects of their convictions. Frustrating part is, after all these years it was a great opportunity (missed!) for a film maker like Nolan to really make a remarkably true epic war movie based on such an intriguing war event like Dunkirk...started from the point of Nazi war plan to skillfully corner the Brit & French allied force and their historic rescues at the end! I understand that not every war movie needs to be character driven with great cast like PATTON, RIVER KWAI, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN or SCHINDLER'S LIST and there was even war film made in such approach where they remarkably portrayed an horrifying event of war without much focusing a set of characters i.e. COME AND SEE (one of the best war movies ever made, IMO) but Dunkirk sadly failed to left any sort of moving impression on me as a viewer.
Though the presence was there but directly (with characters) there wasn't much portrayal of German enemy side in Dunkirk. The irony is actually the 'real enemy' were flat & one dimensional characters and the only real winner in this movie was cinematography, stunning!

Interesting points. I have always been interested in films that let the historical events be the story, rather than the characters. Straight history documentaries tend to be exactly that, especially war docs.
I'm not quite sure what you mean in your post at times. I understood you were saying Dunkirk isn't very character driven, and they aren't very emotional. What are you saying is missing from Dunkirk, in regards to the 'missed opportunity'? That it didn't display the Nasi side, the historical/military context, that it didn't offer the Nasi military as an interesting protaganist?
It's of course very typical of Hollywood war films to be extremely character driven, like Saving Ryan and Schindler's List. Beyond the characters, the film expresses things about humanity, but very little about the historical event.
I haven't seen Dunkirk, but sounds like Nolan was going for a 'you were there' experience as the basis for the audiences' entertainment (which is probably the basic element of a horror film); with some 'horrors of war', 'help your fellow man' and 'duty' thrown in.
Oh, and are you saying you didn't like Intersteller?

I love that movie! The sequel isn't too bad but it lacks the intensity that the first has. There's also a particularly annoying character that I could NOT stand. I don't know, maybe it was the person portraying the character but I just wanted to ignore them whenever they popped up in a scene.
But, I digress. The first one is a blast!

Not only that, I think this whole event could have been portrayed in more epic scale with the involvement of French side also as well as the civilians who bravely took part in the evacuation process. Most of those aspects were in there though but in a quite smaller scale that disappointed me. And this was the missed opportunity for Nolan as he didn't enough even try to explore those sides and thus his Dunkirk failed to become a memorable war film for me.

In terms of 'you were there' experience...for me I felt far more invested in many war films before but in Dunkirk, it didn't work for me as an audience. Mostly because I didn't much care or feel for most of the major characters in there. While watching it, at some point I was even thinking it'd be better for Nolan if he could make a Dunkirk documentary instead. The same goes for INTERSTELLAR too, yeah...I didn't like that much too, a bit dull sci-fi drama, IMO.

Time to catch up on some of the stuff I have seen lately:
Cop car (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3813310/?ref_=rvi_tt) - 6.5/10
For my liking, Bacon and the (other) bad guy were a bit too bumbling for this movie to be really gripping. Overall, it was alright, though, and Bacon's performance was solid, as (nearly) always.
Split (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4972582/?ref_=rvi_tt) - 7/10
An effort that can redeem Shyamalaan a bit. Granted, some of the dialogues still are a bit "wuuuut?", but I liked the idea behind the film and McAvoy really delivers a strong performance. After "The last king of Scotland" I knew the boy could act, but this takes it a step further.
Road kill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1241330/?ref_=rvi_tt) -3/10
Pretty bland crap. The writing was dull, the characters were annoying,... Somewhere in the wasteland between meh and bullshit, you will find Road Kill.
Will try a few more later.

This reminds me of a story...
I went to see the advance screening of House of 1000 Corpses. It was packed, we had to sit in the front row. There was a group of teenagers about halfway up that was loud a shit. They lit up a joint about when the slow draw back head shot happened. The guy next to them started throwing punches and there was a brawl. The cops came and escorted about 8 people away in cuffs. And the movie was awesome... Lol!

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
7/10
It was OK.
Was it better than Rami's Spiderman 2 (2004)? I don't think people have very good memories... No, really not even close. Tom Holland does a good job as a young Spiderman, though I really would have liked the script and director to give him a lot more character and acting range... cause the wide-eyed earnest and nervous routine was wearing thin (thinking of the richer character depictions of Macchio/Karate Kid and McGuire/Spiderman). Finally, in the last car scene with Keaton, Holland actually was able to display another dimension to a rather one-dimensional caricature.
All the other characters were very forgettable and flat.
At least the subject matter of Spiderman Homecoming was somewhat fresh in the Superhero genre: coming of age, wanting to grow-up too fast. However, considering the amount of time dedicated to Parker's high school life, it was noticeably unengaging and inconsequential.

I saw this movie on Starry Eyes' dvd and it looked intresting. What made me give it a go was it had Melodie Sisk in it, who I was in a movie with.

I would say yes, a bit. Less wink wink nudge nudge but it does have the same "meta" approach. Not that New Nightmare doesn't have moments of humor, but it's far more serious in tone.

As someone who's not a big fan of the NoES series, I liked New Nightmare. Course I watched it for the first time in tribute of Wes Craven's death, so it was a lot more bitter sweet watching it with that in mind. There were a lot dumb moments (climbing a fence when you have a car right there to drive through it, HELLO?!), but with NoES you kind of expect that, and it was still a fun watch.

THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE (1992). Pretty dumb, but entertaining melodrama with luscious Rebecca DeMornay standing out as a vengeful deceitful She Devil, with good support from Ernie Hudson and early Julianne Moore. Annabella Sciorra-who has been very good in other films-and Matt McCoy are probably the blandest dullest couple in Screen History. ***

"The Dark Tower"
-Idris Elba
Plot: IMDB
Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), the last Gunslinger, is locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim (Matthew McConaughey), also known as the Man in Black. The Gunslinger must prevent the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, the key that holds the universe together. With the fate of worlds at stake, two men collide in the ultimate battle between good and evil.
Phantom's Review:
If your a Stephen King fan, a "Purist" of his work, then I highly recommend that you skip this film, save yourself the headache. If you have never read the books or your the type of fan who just accepts the fact that Hollywood will rarely ever do King right, then maybe you'll get some enjoyment out of this short (95 minutes) , somewhat standard Hollywood film. For me, the film was a disappointment. I enjoyed 'The Dark Tower' novels and was looking forward to seeing them on the big screen, but this is definitely not was I was hoping for. The filmmakers took bits and pieces from a massive 8 volume series, threw most of the books away and put together this hodge podge sci-fi western. Idris Elba does his best as 'Roland, The Last Gunslinger' but he doesn't have a whole lot to work with. Mathew McConaughey fares slightly better as the villain 'Walter, The Man In Black' , but again there is just not a whole lot to work from. Overall, a huge disappointment.

Alien Covenant -
Well I saw it. I only watched those two prologue shorts some months ago and I didn't watch them before seeing Alien Covenant. And now after seeing the movie, The Last Supper short has some really bad foreshadowing and overall comes off as amateurish. I can see why it was cut. Plus The Crossing short with David and Shaw just shows who is the real bad guy before the movie even starts. Other than that, I only watched bits of one trailer but didn't remember anything from it.
Similar to Prometheus the movie looks beautiful although a bit darker once we get to the planet. The action moments are good as well. And I like the idea behind the crew of space explorer couples traveling to a new world. It was cool considering current events that the couples are an interesting mix of backgrounds and types. I'm a bit biased as I love a good space exploration movie. We don't get enough of those. I thought the little I read about the movie was wrong at first as I was into the movie and it didn't seem that bad. And then something happens and after that the movie takes a down turn that I couldn't believe. For the rest of the review I'll have to go into spoilers just in case people haven't seen it.
SPOILER TEXT!!! - HIGHLIGHT
Of course from the opening, we know David will show up and I'm sure most remember his actions in Prometheus. When he appears the movie becomes something we've seen before in better sci-fi movies and tv shows. Namely the plot of the stranded scientist who goes crazy. Except we already knew David was crazy in Prometheus. So he goes even more nuts.
So we now have a new crew who stumbled into trouble on an unknown planet because of a picked up communication, just like in Alien, who will find themselves in an even more perilous situation with David and his creations. This would all be ok if the movie was smart and if some of the crew members weren't really buffoonish, especially in the later parts of the movie. I gave Prometheus a pass because I got what was going on. The CEO who paid people he could care less about to do a job. The biologist who was showing off to the scared mapper that got lost because the tunnels all looked the same even though his tech should have led them out. But in Covenant we have a security guard character who pokes at plants on an alien ship, another security character who wanders far off alone on a now hostile planet because it's her time to die (the sort of thing Scream made fun of), a captain who looks into an alien egg because he's told to by a crazy android after that android was talking to a creature that just dismembered the crew mate who went for a walkabout, and a new android who doesn't sense danger fast enough from an older model that he knows has a problem and who already tried to kill him. Perhaps one of these is kind of ok. But all of them in a movie that you are supposed to take seriously? I don't think so.
This is silly low budget horror movie stuff and really dumb writing for characters who are supposed to be smart and prepared to go across space. The funny thing is, all the characters who stumbled into trouble were soldiers. You would think soldiers of all people would be the most aware since they are supposed to be protection, therefore wouldn't go around stepping on pods, poking pods, and washing up in distant corridors without their sidearm. Also take the situation with the soldier lady wandering off to clean up, a leader wouldn't just say don't go too far but take another character with you in that situation. Perhaps you can forgive exploring a planet but when you know you're in danger and don't take precautions it's foolishness. I've taken more precautions in the countryside and foreign countries than this crew.
Ridley Scott is now questionable for future Alien movies for me. He chooses great shots and obviously is a skilled director. I had few problems with Prometheus. The main one being the black goo with various properties. But perhaps Prometheus was the warning sign. How the space jockey was really a giant gray guy in a space suit. I always thought or assumed that the space jockey and alien were related. How the suit was designed similar to the ship and its corridors. Even in Prometheus there was that mural that looked like a shrine to the alien and of course the design of the dome structures. But now we have a human android responsible for the notable alien creation and even the eggs. That sort of thing sounds like the worst of fan fiction. People were right, this is the Alien version of the Star Wars prequels.
So now after two movies there are still the questions of how all those eggs got on the original space jockey's ship, crashed, and who put the warning signal out since we know from Prometheus that the space jockey characters want humanity dead. I can't imagine that there is a good space jockey after the destruction of the Engineer's home city. Also, that there are two additional planets with aliens roaming around. Who is going to be the hero of this mess because I'm sure many thought it would be Shaw. And it doesn't look like it's going to be Daniels either. The more I think about it, it seems like Ridley Scott is out of good ideas and finding writers to throw stuff together and mix things from the previous classic movies. At least Prometheus felt new. Covenant has many nods to Alien, Aliens, and even Blade Runner. I did like the hysterical female pilot who acted similar to Lambert. But the updated erotic horror of Lambert's Alien encounter scene in the first movie was taken to its unexpected and generic modern version with nude scene near the end.
After Covenant part of me doesn't really care anymore if we get another Alien movie. And if we do maybe Ridley Scott shouldn't make it. You would never think back when Alien and Aliens came out that the story of the aliens involved our own android. I really don't want to see a future movie where David learns how to create an alien queen using Daniels as a host. Nor some relative of Ripley that just happens to have an encounter with an Alien. I don't know why people want that. The Alien series shouldn't be some myth like Star Wars where a Skywalker has to be involved.
I remember Tarantino talking about how some directors get old and make a really bad movie. This might be it for Ridley Scott. Some were saying how many scenes were gory or at least more graphic than we are used to. Maybe I've seen too many horror movies but I didn't see anything in Covenant that pushed the boundaries of what we've seen before. And looking at the box office results, Covenant made less than Prometheus which isn't a good sign. Sequels should make more not less. Even James Cameron commented and he usually he doesn't comment on other director's films. You can tell he's being polite and kind of referring to Alien 3 as well.
http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3453039/james-cameron-fan-alien-covenant/
Alien Covenant is a movie that makes Prometheus better. But also damages that movie. It's like a drink or meal that starts off good but has a bad aftertaste. What they did to Shaw made me angry and you now have to conclude that she had mental problems during Prometheus. Just like the Star Wars prequels, Covenant is starting to do harm to how you'll feel about Alien and Aliens. Unless of course you forget that you've seen Covenant. The thing about Alien and Aliens is that they aren't two of the best sci-fi horror movies for nothing. Everything about them is well thought out. There aren't any characters doing stupid, borderline retarded stuff just because they are in a horror movie. The movies stand on their own without the need for sequels. Two movies in, there is no way future Alien movies can clean up the events of Covenant. It feels like even though Prometheus was successful, many wanted an Alien movie. So we have the "Alien" title before Covenant and the true aliens. But also Ridley Scott wanted to do something else so mix in the crazed, abandoned mad scientist trope. That bad aftertaste only gets worse when you think about it. I typed this after watching and listening to the movie a second time and it will probably be the last time I ever see the movie.
*** For anyone curious, I thought Prometheus was the third best movie in the Alien series. And the first movie to even be considered to go next to the classic Alien and Aliens movies. I would put Alien Covenant with the rest of the bad movies that I don't even consider owning. And another thing, someone on another forum pointed out that the twist with David erases that clever Predator 2 scene at the end with the Alien skull. All for what?

Inspired by classics like MARTIN (1978) & LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008) but failed to reach that level for the lack of pace and depth in character development parts. Decent effort though, the young actress Chole Levine as Sophie did a good job.

Just saw Lucky Logan and thought it was brilliant! I would gladly give it 9 out of 10. Not going to lie as a Star Wars fan when I saw Adam Driver's character was missing a hand I almost had a panicked attack. ::big grin::
Saw Annabelle 2 yesterday and rate it the best movie in The Conjuring franchise. Needless to say a vast improvement over its preceding movie. Though I was brassed off to learn I had missed the mid and post credit scenes. ::mad::

Loved both of those Spanish thrillers. Have you seen The Invisible Guest? from the director of El Cuerpor aka The Body. Not as good as Cuerpo/Body and kinda predictable but a pretty intense who/how done it thriller, you'll like it too. As far I know, I think La cara oculta aka The Hidden Face got an Indian remake in the MURDER franchise...have you seen that? :D
From those Sci-fi duo, only seen Kill Switch.
Read a few bad reviews about The Recall at IMDB and thought I'd skip it. But as you recommended, now I'll have to check it out.
Btw. are there only 3 seasons of Hemlock Grove?

In a quiet countryside farmhouse, Britain's vampires gather for their once-every-fifty-years meeting. Others will be joining them too; Sebastian Crockett, an unwitting Essex boy who thinks he's on a promise with sexy cougar Vanessa; and a detachment of Special Forces vampire killers who have bitten off more than they can chew.
This is certainly going to be a night to remember...and for some of them it will be their last.
A mediocre fun vampire comedy, surprised to find Carlie Daredevil Cox as one of the vampires and he played the most decent one!

I stopped following IMDB reviews a long time back.
As long as a film has a decent rating (around 5/10) and has a plot which intrigues me, I am all game for it. Preference given to mystery-suspense films these days.

Yep. One of the main reasons why it's so good. I don't like stretched out shows/series - just because it became popular and the channels decide to rake in the TRPs by over-roasting the main contents.

Headless (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3922350/?ref_=rvi_tt) wasn't the greatest movie over all:
- the acting was (sometimes) sub par
- the first 15 minutes have no discernable plot
- the male characters look and talk like they're auditioning for a Rob Zombie-movie
- the fact that the bowling alley owner is killed off screen
But it also has a few things going for it
- a scary killer (though his mask reminded me of Corey Taylor somehow)
- genuinely creepy vibes
- disturbing imagery
- in a way, it made me long for the traditional last girl-payoff, but it did not give that and - sort of like the original version of Funny Games - that made it better.

CITIZEN X (1995). Very low key and relatively bloodless-especially since it's from HBO- but good film about Andrei Chikalo, the Russian serial Killer who cut a wide swath throughout the Ukraine. Good turns by Stephen Rea Jeffrey DeMunn as the killer and a very good Donald Sutherland. ***1/2

Ouija Origin of Evil -
I recall thinking the original Ouija was ok. Kind of basic. It could have been better. But I didn't need to see a prequel or sequel. But here is a prequel movie. Technically this is a better movie than the original. There are a few good creepy scares and the acting is fine. Also like some movies that show a different time period in America, the production design is well done. Yet still at the end of the movie, I found myself thinking, did I really need to see the origin of the story in the original? And the answer is still no.
