A really good horror/mystery that was similar to "Premonition" (2007), but just much more of a psychological mindfuck.
Oh yea, might be worth mentioning it's made by Ariel Vromen, the director of "The Iceman" and the upcoming "Criminal", which I'm really looking forward to.

So after all the good reviews i've heard about this i decided to give it a second chance and i have to admit it's not as bad as i originally thought. It's certainly not the cinematic masterpiece that everyone's making it out to be but its not terrible. The plot wasn't bad but it wasn't all that original nor was its execution. I still had a hard time connecting to the characters mostly due to Karen Gillans terrible acting. The little girl who played her younger self was a lot better. Gillan seemed so wooden and had hardly any emotion throughout the whole movie. I didn't find it scary at all but i do see how someone else might. It really could've been a lot better but it is much better than some of the other horror movies i've seen this year. I also liked the ending.

Vila Roza aka Roseville (2013)
http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p433/sanjidparvez/Rosevilleeng_zps5fae4c70.jpg
Great set up & atmosphere like any good European horror movie offer nowadays but didn't deliver creepy stuffs as much I expected. Moreover, it was like an underdeveloped plot that seems quite interesting at the beginning but got lost at the end, as if they weren't sure what to do or where to go with it after the initial, promising build up.

A Bulgarian Evil Dead for mature people.
Couldn't come up with anything better. But it's not completely untrue. The evil comes from the woods.

Lizzie Borden Took an Axe.......ps still don't think she did itEver see the 1975 version Legend of Lissie Borden starring Elisabeth Montgomery? Has really good reviews.
Nineteen hits to the back of the head on the stepmom, and then a 1/2 hr later, when father returns home, struck 10 times in the head, with both Lizzie & maid in the house, both left unharmed, nothing stolen. Seems extremey personal, without any other hateful personal associations to be found.
Have any ideas other than Lizzie?

Sounds cool. I saw a street graffiti doc on netflix about 8 years ago, a few infamous masked artists allowing filming of their work. One British dude who reconstructed a phone both into a surreal form. And ended with a follower street artist holding an art exhibit sealing quite a bit of pseudo-worhol art. I can't remember the name now.

This is a brilliant indie twisted sci-fi thriller that will keep you guessing & engaged to the characters & story as it progress every moment. Kind of reminded me of another great indie sci fi flick The Man from Earth (2007), just for the similar premise of a living room where the film mostly takes place but the story is actually evolving through with much greater & twisted thought provoking contents. In his very first feature film, director James Ward Byrkit truly did a wonderful job here with such limited setting to tell a remarkable sci-fi tale. Absolutely loved it. Emily Baldoni on the lead also got my attention for her stunning beauty, looking forward to see her more regularly in genre films in coming days.
Not sure whether you guys have seen it or not but I'm Highly recommending it! Specially like to hear the feedback from Chrono, NE, Angra, Villain, Straker & Ferox. If you loved Triangle (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1187064/), you'll love it too! ::cool::

Agreed. This one is a really quality sci-fi. Largely improvised script, which works really well and the cast do a great job. The movie keeps you thinking and keeps you guessing throughout, but doesn't go too far into that territory of just becoming annoying and convoluted. A brilliant example of low budget film making.

I liked it a lot. Thought it was really well crafted and acted. The improvised dialog didn't feel lazy, like mumblecore often does, or awkward and unpolished, like some cinéma vérité can be. Although I'm not a huge fan of films where the majority of the "action" is not seen but rather delivered through exposition, in this case the story was engaging enough to work well in that format, and also it was a bit of a mystery, where the characters were unraveling the plot simultaneously with the viewers.
My couple beefs with the details are (**SPOILERS**):
1) It was a little too convenient that one of the partygoers had written a book (or a friend did?) that happened to explain what was happening with the comet. I think it would have been more credible if someone did some quick research on the internet, or maybe if a character had once read a book that might explain it.
2) I thought everyone was a little too quick to start believing the theory. Especially since only a couple of the partygoers had left the house to witness anything weird. I would expect a bit more skepticism or disagreement. However, I'm glad we didn't get the overly-resistant skeptic that always seems to be relied on to provide internal conflict/drama.
Those are fairly small nits though, and didn't harm the experience much. My biggest problem was that I just had trouble following towards the end, especially when we learn there are more than two versions of people. Afterwards, I had to do some reading on the internet to explain it, and found a really good, detailed explanation of the multiple versions of who was doing what. Although the explanation might have been accurate, it almost confused me even more. Maybe with a 2nd or 3rd watch it would be more clear to me. I didn't have this problem with other doppleganger-esque films, even those that are somewhat challenging, like The Double or Enemy.
I gave it 7/10, and it's somewhere in the middle of my 7's for 2014. Definitely recommended.

This was surprisingly good. It starts out like an Indiana Jones treasure hunt movie but turns into a full fledged monster movie by the end. The story is pretty good, similar type stories have been done but the viking and Ragnarok aspect gave it a nice creative touch. The characters are good as well as the acting so you actually care about the characters and in turn the story. The monsters really cool also. Its not going to end up on any best monster lists but still a cool monster for the movie. If you're looking for a cool foreign monster movie with a good story, check this out

"Whiplash" 9/10
A must-see for fans of drumming, music conservatory students and, of course, people who like movies about music.
Most of all this is a story about the battle between a determined drummer and his music teacher from hell.
This is Miles Teller's movie, but it's another guy who steals the show in each scene he has a dialogue. This guy:
http://thefilmexperience.net/storage/2014/Whiplash-Simmons-shouting.jpeg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=141304301 9139
J.K. Simmons plays the Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (Full Metal Jacket) of teachers and I'm certain this performance will earn him an Oscar nomination besides Steve Carell (Foxcatcher).
My only issue with this really well made movie, is that I would've liked it to be an hour longer which would have allowed the story to be bigger and continue from the fantastic climatic ending, and tell us what further happens to these two amazing characters instead of just letting the credits roll to what seems like the beginning of something big.

A great movie indeed. Iran has a great movie industry & they have made some awesome cinema over the years. In 80s & 90s we get to see couple of Iranian movies (dubbed in Bangla) in our national TV channel here as a weekly movie program "Movie of the Week". I've seen few but frustratingly can't recall the titles now. As far I can remember & know, they are pretty good with Political thriller & twisted human drama/thriller genre. In recent years, before this movie I have seen another one; called About Elly (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1360860/) (2009)...a beautifully twisted psychological drama/thriller which I'd like to recommend you if you haven't seen yet.

The story felt too clean and sanitised considering the subject matter, but the acting performances keep it feeling somewhat original and fresh. Overall its a solid dark comedy drama and well worth a watch and I'm sure some of you guys will enjoy it..... Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader are getting a ton of plaudits for their performances and they are both great, but its Luke Wilson's performance that really steals the show for me. His best work since Tenenbaums.

Let me start by saying, I haven't read the book which might be why I liked it so much, coz it sure gets a beating on IMDB from the book lovers club. Holy hell. Apparently the movie lacks a lot of the story from the book, especially what happened after the war was over.
But as a person who isn't as enlightened about the true story I thought this was an amazing experience and accomplishment from Angelina Jolie and the Cohen brothers. Epic is what it is.
Story:
"The life of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete who joined the armed forces during the second world war. Only to be captured by the Japanese navy after an almost fatal plane crash in the Pacific. After the Japanese have him, they send him to a refugee camp, only to face daring challenges head on."
Under the title it says, "The unbelievable true story" and that's exactly how I would describe it. An amazingly unbelievable true story.

Jeepers Creepers (2001)
While driving home to visit their family, two siblings are pursued by a flesh-eating monster that is on its last day of its ritualistic feeding spree.
This was recommended to me by countless people, and I saw it on Netflix, so I gave it a go. This movie wasn't even close to being scary, which was kinda disappointing, but I thought it had a cool villain and storyline, and it was just an extremely entertaining movie. It had some plot issues, but this movie was still really fun to watch.

>>: B
I agree with this review only I give it a C.
Too vague and too much wasted potential.
I think with some changes this could've been a really great movie!
Spoilers
-That relic/stone was cheap. Couldn't they've come with something better looking?
-The widow tried to BURN the stone. Would've made more sense if the owner of the place tried to smash it with a hammer.
-At the end the police dude said the signs carved into the American pointed to some place deep in outer space. That and the stone are Lovecraft references imo which I think are cool. I think with a good re-write this could be a great Lovecraftian movie.

Loved this movie. Micheal Keaton gives the performance of his life. He should definitely at least be nominated for an oscar for his acting in this. Not as good as the first but better then the second one which i felt was a dragged out set up for this film. I really didn't like how quickly they resolved the ending of the second film. Seemed like after all that it should've mattered more but once it gets into the pivotal battle, it's a lot of fun. The ending's not great but it works for what it is. The series as a whole doesn't even begin to touch Lord of The Rings but its fun.

Except for the beautiful cinematography I really disliked this one. I've never understood why you would make a musical just for the sake of having actors singing their lines instead of saying them, but without any real intentions of making catchy songs? In my eyes it's just ruining something that could've been a good movie. I had the same problems with "Sweeney Todd". Even before I was halfway through Into the Woods I didn't give a rats ass what was going on and I couldn't wait till it was over so my increasing headache would disappear again.
I would choose the new remake of Annie over Into the Woods any day of the week. At least THAT shit has catchy songs. :danger:

Another film which could have been a masterpiece, except for minor flaws. Eva is once again overwhelmingly powerful depicting her desolation, as the bizarre story revolves around her. The ending, though a sad one, is equally moving and impactful. Recommended as well, if you like a dose of surreality in your bizarre pie.

The Amityville Horror (2005)
A family moves into their dream home only to learn that it was the sight of a mass murder a year earlier.
As far as remakes go, this is one of the rare ones that rivals its predecessor in quality. In this case, they're both about as mediocre and moronic, but this one is even worse. The one or two scenes in the original that scared me where completely ruined by predictable jump scares, which the film relies on a lot, as well as bad special effects. The remake significantly toned-down the priest character, and that's both a good thing and a bad thing. A good thing because I hated his character in the original, but a bad thing because he's even more unnecessary since he only appears in two scenes. Even if you enjoyed the original, I don't recommend this one at all.

Man, we can't talk to each other.
You're aware it's the same guy who wrote the songs to both movies, right? I'm guessing that's why they're so similar in style.
Just because its the same guy doesn't mean the song styles are going to be the same. The movie's couldnt have been any different and so are the songs
I have to check out that movie even tho I'm afraid it's gonna be too weird and artsy for my taste. But since you're Oscar nominating Keaton and everybody else is nominating Norton for this movie I have to give it a watch. ::smile::
Yeah i can see Norton getting a supporting nomination for this as well. It gets a little artsy at times but strangely not in a bad way and im not big on artsy films.

That makes sense. I think the overuse of the crappy special effects really killed the vibe for me. I loved the scene in the original where the girl is locked in the closet, and you see the daughter just blankly staring at the door. That was a really scary scene, and I wish other scenes in the movie were like that. In the remake, they just ruined the scene with a god damn jump scare. The remake as a whole was a lot more busy and flashy, which is very rarely a good thing.

The Last House on the Left (2009)
After torturing two girls and leaving them to die, a group of escaped convicts take shelter from a storm in a couple's vacation home, but they get more than what they bargained for when they learn whose house it really is.
I haven't seen this in a couple years, so my memory of it was a little fuzzy. Now I know that it was far better than I expected. A huge improvement to the original was a consistently dark atmosphere. In Wes Craven's version, it felt silly at times, namely the scenes with the cops and the whole "Willow" stuff. This remake was also a lot more intense and suspenseful, and the danger felt a lot more real. The ending may somewhat blunt the movie's overall effect, but, hey, how often do you get that sort of ending in a horror movie? The rape scene was very difficult to sit through because it was so long and realistic, which is my only real complaint. If you had to choose to watch the original or the remake, I would go with the remake because it's a lot more thrilling, and it's far superior to Wes Craven's version overall.

Shock Value (2014)
Very clever and blackly funny low budget meta horror.
This movie is about making a movie: The Whorehouse that Screamed. The characters deliver some of the best horror-movie satire I've seen in a while, perhaps ever.
The snarky director thinks his horror movie-making experience gives him "the mind of a serial killer," moreso than his perfectly-cast actor, whom the director selected because he happens to be a real serial killer. Meanwhile, the killer acts indifferent to the project, yet practices his lines self-consciously in a mirror and calls out the writer/director for plot holes. The producer politely asks the actor/killer not to murder the director after the film is done, and Malcolm McDowell, in a sleazy cameo as a washed up actor, pitches his big idea: to play Dracula in a found-footage, "edgy, 21st century reboot" that boasts "modern stuff, like the internet."
Chock full of true meta stuff that doesn't rely on characters spelling out the satirical references, the way Scream, Cabin in the Woods, and Behind the Mask do. Heck, the makeup effects guy even looks like Tom Savini. This one will make horror fans smile, and the story's not bad either.
Recommended for black comedy fans who appreciate horror satire, and aren't adverse to low budget indies.

The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears (2013)
I think this movie is about a guy who's wife went missing, and he spends the length of the film searching for her. However, what we really see is a 102-minute collage of bloody sex and death, done in masterful giallo fashion. Each scene rotates between stylings of Bava, Argento and Fulci, from black & white to saturated green & red washes of light, from split screen to ultra-closeups, from crime intrigue to bloody violence, from kaleidoscopic psychedelia, to choppy stop motion, to the slow drip of red, red blood. Unfortunately, however, without a plot of any substance, it all starts to wear thin after a while. Perhaps if the directors wanted a reason to show off their deep appreciation of everything giallo, and their impeccable technical acumen in paying homage, they could have instead broken the vignettes up into actual stories, and released the film as an anthology, like they did with their first effort, Amer, which in my opinion is just as artistic, but much more accessible.
Despite the flaws, the visuals are so good that I have to still give it:

Speed Racer 2008
7/10
"A young driver, Speed Racer, aspires to be champion of the racing world with the help of his family and his high-tech Mach 5 automobile."
Some excellent casting with Matthew Fox as Racer X, John Goodman as Pops, Roger Allam as E.P. Arnold Royalton; not so much with Christina Ricci as Trixie & Emile Hirsch as Speed Racer.
Thought Speed Racer & the Wachowski Bros (the Matrix) was a perfect match. After all, the 1966 Speed Racer animated cartoon originated the (animated) camera spin around the character (seen at end of TV intro).
I was a fan of the animated cartoon (have never seen any cartoon like it, & never anything close post 1980s). I thought it'd make a good live action film once SFX caught up.
Unfortunately, the Wachs choose a neon-lights & toy video-game race track environment for much of the racing, which I thought looked horrible -- both in looks & an unrealistic physics feel. During production, I wish they would have reviewed the overall look, acknowledged it's defects, & started over without the neon. I think a more realistic look & physics would have looked better, just as it did in the cartoon.
Despite the look, Speed Racer does capture the authentic feel of the Racer family's fight for pure honest sport, art, goodness & justice. It incorporates the brother theme into the fight against injustice & evil. The film is effectively fun & entertaining.
Speed Racer makes a homage to a number of the TV episode themes, including a disappointingly tonned-down Mammoth Car. I think making a full-sized Mammoth Car the central focal point for the film's climax (including the original Mammoth Car musical theme) would have been extremely effective. The Mammoth Car being an excellent symbol of the corporate corruption, excess & power.
Also, I think the film played too loose on Speed Racer's intense sense of justice & immediate action, which really propelled the TV series. I would have liked to see the intense, dangerous & wildly creative racing events play a dominate role in the film, much in the way the film Road Warrior did so successfully. I think the film missed on attention to key focal points. Would love to see them try it again, going with a Mammoth Car sequel.

Unless I see something really good and surprising like Triangle, I'm not going to post reviews for a while. I want to get more stuff done so I can watch a horror movie per night in October. Kind of going out for now with some forgettable ones that do have pretty actresses in them. You can almost call it "The Friday the 13th remake actress show." First up -

Too bad these movies aren't as fun as this image. It's from the bad Friday the 13th remake. She plays almost the same character in both Altitude and Mine Games. They have kind of similar plot elements too.
Altitude -
http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj600/ImmortalSlasher/Altitude_Teaser_Poster.jpg (http://s1269.photobucket.com/user/ImmortalSlasher/media/Altitude_Teaser_Poster.jpg.html)
When you see this poster what do you think? I thought Lovecraft, Twilight Zone, and good sci-fi horror movies or TV shows. But sadly the movie feels like a 90210 "horror" movie with a Lifetime / LMN network twist. Maybe the director should have told the actors to watch some old Twilight Zone episodes. Nightmare at 20,000 Feet is far better than this one. In fact 30 minute Twilight Zone episodes have a far tighter feel for storytelling as a whole compared to this 90 minute movie. They should have used the first 10 or so minutes to show the relationship between the main characters. Twilight Zone was very good at setting the scene and mind set of characters almost immediately since they didn't have that much time. But here they want a reveal to be a surprise for some reason. To generate conflict I guess. The important characters aren't very likeable either. Jessica Lowndes is beautiful, that's really the only reason why you like her in the movie. Same for Julianna as the pretty blonde girl. As characters they are pretty bad. One supposedly has a boyfriend but he doesn't seem like it. And the other I guess is cheating. The male characters are stereotypes. Jock, musician, and geek.
The final twist when you realize where they are going with the story is a big "why?" or "are they serious?" Because a good story that does something like this would put the elements or hint at something early on. Like I mentioned, those Twilight Zone episodes get you in the mood early on from the title sequence. It's like Altitude used that poster as a tease to rope people in and then have the modern teenager / young adult stuff through almost the whole movie.
Maybe if the director or writer made the story only for Jessica or Julianna it would have been better. Or at least more enjoyable. Look at the remake of When a Stranger Calls. That's a pretty bad movie. But it has Camilla Belle in a beautiful setting and house. Perhaps the plane in this movie could have been a luxurious private design and Jessica was co-pilot or the person asked to help fly. At least create the story with a bigger plane or another passenger that can fly. I swear Jessica's character looks behind her more than she looks in front and she's the one flying in a cloud, without radio contact, and at an unknown altitude. At one if not more points she actually gets out of her seat to engage in conversation and argue with her friends! It's crazy and makes zero sense.
There is another older movie that has a coming TV show this year that does a similar twist as Altitude. I don't want to drop a spoiler so post if you've seen Altitude and want the name of the movie / TV show. But it's a far, far better movie where you care about and feel for the characters more than in Altitude. Only see this one if you want to see Jessica Lowndes, Julianna Guill, or are curious about that poster monster. And even then you can look that stuff up online.
Mine Games -
I think the setup is good but for this type of movie I think you need to decide if you are going to go serious or slasher. It's like they weren't sure during the movie. A movie like Triangle (http://horror.com/forum/showpost.php?p=976905&postcount=2442) gets it. It's serious and the tone is right from the get go. Mine Games bounces back and forth. If they wanted to use the slasher tropes with the twist they should have gone all out. All the characters should have been mentally compromised from alcohol or drugs. For example, one time I went too far with alcohol and thought skeletons were going to come through my door. In this movie only the ethnic girl gets hallucinations and I think she's supposed to be Native American or a fortune teller. It's one of those typical Hollywood things.
Mine Games starts off with usual things you see other and better horror movies. The trip to the cabin, nice overhead shots through the beautiful outdoors, a group of friends, the supply pickup, etc. Basically the sort of setup that Cabin in the Woods, a movie I'm not that fond of, made a point of showing how tired it all is. Parts of the movie and character elements reminded me of The Descent. Except they explore an abandoned mine for no reason. They don't just take a few steps in either. They go deep into the mine multiple times and even play around in it. I guess common sense of old abandoned mine equals dangerous doesn't click with these people.
The movie kind of feels thrown together. Ideas from other movies quickly put together. There was one seemingly out of place sex scene and only after watching some of the movie again hearing a throwaway line did I realize the identity of the couple. Still I think the continuity of the movie is messed up as there is something shown at the beginning of the movie that hints at something. But it can't possibly be as that would break the timeline.
Maybe it's the budget. I was looking around for more stuff on the mine walls. There could have been more with that mine. More back story. Perhaps another person knowing about it or hearing about some area legend. It's a trope but you need that sometimes. Even Triangle has the one line that basically tells you what is happening.
In the end, there is no why even though that's not always needed. But there is no unsettling feeling at the end like in Triangle. It just ends kind of similar to The Descent's American ending. It's like they saw certain movies and thought to make their own version with slasher elements but didn't realize that they needed to make an actual movie not just rip from others.
* By the way, no Julianna nudity in either of these. I guess she decided that the scene in the Friday the 13th remake was enough and the best we get is her in a bikini in Mine Games.

Amanda Righetti Special
http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj600/ImmortalSlasher/AmandaRighetti.jpg (http://s1269.photobucket.com/user/ImmortalSlasher/media/AmandaRighetti.jpg.html)
Return to the House on Haunted Hill -
I barely remember The House on Haunted Hill remake and I haven't seen the original movie. From what I remember, I didn't think the remake wasn't that bad. Amanda Righetti is really pretty here. I kind of remember her in that Friday the 13th remake. She's hardly in the opening segment and when the twist happens I was pretty much detached from the movie at that point. Here she's front and center figuring out what happened to her sister. The movie might not be the best but it's not horrible or offensive either. Jeffrey Combs has a quick bad guy role. The main bad guy or at least the main human bad guy is pretty good too. It's an ok time waster while eating dinner.

"The Remaining" 7-8/10
Started out really promising kicking off the action already after 10 minutes of introduction. Sadly after 25 minutes the movie ran out of steam and continued in a mid tempo pace for the rest of the movie. It also felt like the writers had no idea where to go with the story after the first half hour and the whole thing ended up feeling like a pilot to a very promising apocalyptic armageddon series.
In the end it will probably end up in the same category as Vanishing on 7th Street, which is a pretty good watch but fairly forgettable in the long run.

Not the best acting, but a fun watch nevertheless. By the cover you'd think this would be a slasher but it's more of a torture flick with some dark humor added.

I was looking forward to Altitude and thought the poster was good. I felt people should be warned that the movie isn't very good. I personally like to know a bit more about a movie in reviews. Someone on HorrorDVDs mentioned this same thing when posting which movies people watched during Halloween. Posting a list vs posting a list with thoughts.
Many times I see what people watched here and I have to check the movie on IMDB to see what it was about. Or they post the poster art and a number review and I think the poster looks good so I look that up.
If I posted a review on the Friday the 13th remake for example and just said "Crap" wouldn't you want to know why? Most horror fans will check the movie out anyway. But if I gave a paragraph or so maybe it wouldn't be a immediate watch. And you could watch something better instead like a Triangle for example.

Since American Sniper managed to get an Oscar nomination for Best Motion Picture I figured I'd give it a shot.
For a Clint Eastwood creation it stands out for being under one and a half hour long. Still it's able to tell a good story that's really entertaining and has some highly intense moments.
Now, I don't believe it has a chance of actually winning the Oscar statuette (coz... Boyhood.::roll eyes::), but it's still a damn good watch.

I've seen it a couple times and don't remember it being heavily dependent on standard jump scares -- meaning, the cheap type that merely startles you with a loud noise and a jumpy visual. I do, however, remember a lot of -- for lack of a better term -- "gasp scares," meaning basically a less jumpy reveal that's supposed to spook the viewer, like, in the Conjuring, the body hanging from the tree, or when they showed the ghosts that only Vera Farmiga's could see. To me, these don't come off nearly as cheap as a jump scare, but still are a pretty cliche, especially in Hollywood horror films.
I could be wrong though. Maybe there are a bunch of jump scares I'm just not remembering.

I saw a video recently that spoke about what's wrong with horror movies and one of the biggest issues was jump scares. They did happen to mention James Wan's movies though and spoke about how the jump scares he utilized were fine because they were earned and they were actual scary things that would make you jump. So even though there were jump scares in The Conjuring, they were done well.

While I acknowledge the jump scare usage as well, it's not like it was *all* jump scares. I actually felt it was quite atmospheric. True, slightly wooden actors, but hey...never really a good point for horror.
Though I'd say if you didn't like this one, definitely don't see Annabelle.

While I acknowledge the jump scare usage as well, it's not like it was *all* jump scares.
Agreed. It wasn't.
There was maybe about 6 jump scares in the whole movie. (Just saw it to be sure)
I tend to call all jump scares cheap, but I see what Giganticface is sayin, that there are different levels of cheapness in jump scares. James Wan is certainly at the lowest levels as he actually DO try to make an effort and often tries to make long build-ups up to each jump scare.
That being said, I still think all jump scares are cheap, as you can have the audience watching two people having a conversation, a girl sleeping or a freakin tree, and suddenly BAM!!!, cut to a little cute bunny accompanied by loud music or noise, and you have yourself a successful jump scare, coz People's brain doesn't expect that. In my book that's just too easy and I'm honestly really tired of the overuse. It's like all creepy atmospheric build-ups has to end with a jump scare nowadays. Heck, a guy like James Wan has made it his trademark.

There was maybe about 6 jump scares in the whole movie. (Just saw it to be sure)

Well said. It's true James Wan has made this his trademark, which is too bad because Saw was so much the opposite.
The best example I can think of of a non-cheap jump scare is the hospital hallway scene in The Exorcist III. I personally wouldn't call it a jump scare (like I described in my last post), but I could see how some would since it lulls the viewer with atmosphere and then gets a rise out of them. I think most of James Wan's jump-ish scares fall in this category too, without coming close to as good.
I totally agree that, regardless of cheapness level, the tactic is way overused. I think horror films have reached new levels of dependency on the worst types of jump scares. So many films use crappy CGI with a loud noise to startle us with some demon, creepy kid, or ghost. And even worse are the found footage (especially of the paranormal variety) totally-quiet-then-everything-goes-haywire scares. Paranormal Activity 2, the scene in the bathroom, is a good example.
Surprisingly though, the technique is nothing new. I can't tell you how many old horror films I've seen where a cat jumps out, or bats suddenly fly out of an attic door, or a bird flies through the window -- even many of the great classics. My dad is always making fun of this, and I think it's one of the reasons the genre gets a bad rap. Because it really is cheap.
Say what you will about Rob Zombie, but I found Lords of Salem, which was pretty creepy without a single thing resembling a jump scare, to be refreshing. Unfortunately, that's not what sells at the box office.

I for one don't think all jump scares are cheap.
I have seen some amazingly expertly setup & timed 'jump scares'. I think of some of the very first T-hit car crashes in films -- I think the first I saw was in The Forgotten. In that one, it lends to the sense that she's unaware she's gonna get hit by 'them'.
And lots of others, like in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the guy who leaves Indy in the cave & gets spikes through the head. It caps the release of the tension of Indy climbing out of the pit & getting under the door.
But I do agree, I got tired of the overuse of jump scares in films. I think it peaked in the 80's with some films a steady repetition of boobs, jump scare & gore, as if all viewers wanted a quick crack hit. I guess some did, or do, but I don't.

Okay, I'll agree it IS possible to make a non-cheap jump scare. A perfect example is actually from The Conjuring. The scene where the mother is sitting at the top of the stairs to the dark cellar, lighting one match after the other, and you expect something to come up the stairs from below, but instead two arms comes out of the darkness behind her and clap its hands together. Nice.
What makes a jump scare cheap in my book, is when the movie uses fast-cutting loudness. Which is the case in most movies.

Jump scares get a bit of a bad rap these days, because they are overused, derivative and synonymous with bad directing, but most of everyone's favourite horror movies probably have a good jump scare or two in there.

While I acknowledge the jump scare usage as well, it's not like it was *all* jump scares. I actually felt it was quite atmospheric. True, slightly wooden actors, but hey...never really a good point for horror.
Though I'd say if you didn't like this one, definitely don't see Annabelle.

True.
One of my favorite scary movies is Salems Lot and it does contain one cheap ass jump scare and another one less cheap. But thas alright as the rest of the movie consists of slow creepy terror and genuinely scary scenes.
