You aren't saying that the sequels to Terminator and Alien are bad are you?
Not at all. Both were amazing. In both franchises, the third part is where the diminishing returns started.

Alien³ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103644/?ref_=rvi_tt)
Like with Terminator, it seems like part 3 did more damage than the original sequel.
While Aliens expanded on the original concept, this one ventures more into generic action film territory. Not much to care about, though it's nice to Pete "Kobayashi" Postlethwaite get a small part. Even Sigourney Weaver looks a bit lackluster in this one and the Lance Henriksen cameo was a bit forced.
David Fincher probably did what he could with the script he was given, but at that point, he was still a way away from his later masterpieces.
It makes me want to say something nice, because somewhere in there, there's something that convinced a studio exec to give him the green light to do Seven. What it is? Not sure yet.
I think it would had been quite a different movie if they went with the other script: https://www.awesomefilm.com/script/Alien3.txt
But to be fair, I think it is quite hard to end a trilogy like that with a movie of the same level with different directors and different writers.

I thought you were saying that the first Terminator sequel did damage to the original.
There is something in T2 that could still be used in a sequel. I'm surprised that no one noticed it from all the directors and writers that worked on the sequels. I thought James Cameron might use it but I guess he liked the story from the last movie.
Doesn't really matter. I kind of used it myself for a quick outline for a Terminator 3. I find every movie after T2 to be a joke for the most part.

I know they made a comic from the original story. I haven't read it yet. But the only story after Aliens was the origin of the derelict ship. But they couldn't even get that right in Prometheus.
I'm curious about the upcoming TV show. But it's like Star Wars at this point. They made too many bad movies. I think only the new Halloween series says disregard the tons of sequels. I can't think of another series that does that right now.

Speaking of TV shows and Terminator... I thought the Sarah Connor Chronicles was pretty good. Two seasons.
Alien 3 was horrible compared to the first two. I was mildly entertained when I saw it. I've seen much worse. I thought it was an interesting story setting, but it just didnt come together. The ending itself was irksome.

Child’s Play (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8663516/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_4) was a fun little remake.
You go in expecting disaster and a convoluted mess. Especially when the opening sequence pulls a serious version of the classic Simpsons-bit - Here's your problem, someone set this thing to evil. Then it turns out to be not that bad and, at times, pretty entertaining.
No four stars, though, because the end was too wonky. But the kills are cool (apart the self driving car bit) and I found it a nice touch that the Kaslan logo reminded of Tesla.
Let's go over the comparison.
Chucky > Buddi
The original Chucky (if you don't count the cheesy sequels) had a meanness that this one dearly misses. Apart from one or two moments, the doll is not that scary.
Mark Hamill < Brad Dourif (but not by much)
Nothing touches on Dourif's performance, but it has to be said that Mark Hamill adds a nice touch, giving a hint of innocence to the Chucky character. Making it all the more creepy when he turns on you. You can tell that Hamill is a good voice actor. Makes me all the more curious about his rendition of The Joker. Any recommendations?
Aubrey Plaza > Catherine Hicks
Aubrey Plaza is more convincing as an overworked single mom.
Alex Vincent > Gabriel Bateman (definetily)
Alex Vincent did a good child performance, making Andy look cute and somewhat likable. Gabriel Bateman and his friends just go down the same kid character road set by Stranger Things. It's been done.

Alien Resurrection (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118583/)
More generic action and nowhere near the first two.
That said, the action in this one is better. The underwater scene is pretty entertaining and tense.
It also helps that the actors were better than in part 3. Or at least, they were played to their capabilities. Ron Perlman does a good badass and Brad Dourif is at his best when he does a weirdo. And of course the beauty of Winona. Even as a robot

I thought Sarah Connor Chronicles was hit and miss. Definitely didn't have the creativity of the original 2 movies. And the budget wasn't enough for a Terminator TV show.
I hated that the people behind the show seemed to make cliffhangers and attempted to get fans to extend the show. It worked once but not the second time. You would think the writers would construct a better ending since they barely made it to the second season after the first season. But I guess not.
Part of me thinks that maybe the TV show is the best after the first two movies. But it's really not a high bar to cross when I don't want to watch any Terminator movie after T2.
I still haven't finished that trilogy of books. The first one was good. I have a few Terminator comics and a recent one is on my list. Of course the recent videogame as well.

Spencer (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12536294/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_2)
There is a lot to be said about this flick. About it's qualities and it's problems. It has a few problems, but it remains a fascinating watch nonetheless.
The main problem is that it tries too hard.
It hits you over the head too hard and too often with the image of the frail little blond bird trampled by the heartless in laws and their cronies. About the hard life in a suffocating environment. As if we did not know. Or disagreed, for that matter. Yes, it must drive a person crazy. And yes, you can walk away.
Maybe, it's me being a republican (in the European sense of the word, mind you), but I cannot help but think that women like Diana (and by extension Meghan Markle) know/should know what they are getting into when they join this club. Anyway.
The portrayal of the royal family is both a strength and a frailty. The quality: it hammers home the central message. On the other side, especially Charles looked onedimensional and like a charicature. The embodiment of the stiff upper lip. Not even a slight trace of the man Diana fell in love with. Which begs the question even more: what made her love this man so much that she wanted to be there in the first place?
I cannot say much about the two boys, since I don't know enough about them and in that position, you tend to base your interpretation of the characters on the men they later became.
Which brings us to the star of the film. Which is justified, because she really carries the film. It is really striking how much scenes she spends alone and how little screen time the other family members have.
Being a European with an American accent, I am not well placed to judge the British accent she put on. But I understand how crucial this must be to the English viewers.
That said, Kristen Stewart delivers a tour de force as Diana. She really draws you into her world, using mostly body language and intonation to do so. A very strong performance, resulting in deserved Oscar buzz. Even if it's with an eyeroll at the typical Hollywood hogwash. Why typical? Because Kristen Stewart delivered strong performances in the past (as Joan Jett, for one), but it's not until she does the tragic woe is me character that the Academy notices.
Two small PSes:
1) I liked the kitchen chef because, imho, he had a bit of a Grand Budapest Hotel-air over him.
2) Jonny Greenwood does better scores than Thom Yorke.

Nobody.
Now, I've only seen the first John Wick...and I have to say that while quite a bit more stylised than "Nobody" was, I preferred Nobody quite a bit...the character was more interesting as was his past...and that whole "shaking off the rust" bit was great, too.
An actually conflicted character played by a guy who, despite his comparative lack of popularity, can act circles around Keanu - I mean shit, did ANYONE watch this and think "Saul" the whole time? I know I sure as fuck didn't.
Was nice to see Chris Lloyd again too.
Overall I found this very entertaining...you want a modern day "Death Wish"?
Well forget about the bland remake - this is the movie you want.
7.5/10.

PEPPERMINT (2018). This could be a DEATH WISH on Estrogen movie. Jennifer Garner is pretty good as the woman who loses her family, is severely traumatized/injured in the attack and terribly let down by the Legal system. Going undercover for a few years, She returns to mete out justice-Her way.
Not great, but certainly not bad at all. JG kicks all kind of Ass in her and this could be a darker version of Sidney Bristow (Her character from the TV series ALIAS) and also, she is in excellent shape as well. ***

Christmas Day equals movie marathon day. I gues BHC technically belongs in the 80s section, but I'll put it here just to go with the flow.
On the menu:
American History X (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120586/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt_i_11)
I remember seeing this film a long time ago - not sure wether it was in a cinema - but I had forgotten how it jumped right into things. While you would expect this kind of film to have a bit of a slow build, this one was already revealing a large part of a key scene.
This film has qualities, but subtlety is not one of them. It really hammers it's message of love, redemption and tolerance. So they did that by pushing the envelop and showing hatred at it's ugliest, accompanied by the language that comes with it. After all, it's hard to have redemption without a sin. And in this film's logic: the bigger the sin, the bigger the redemption.
That said, there are a few things to be said about the film as well. The overheavy score, who laid it on pretty thick. Has to make it really, really clear what you should be thinking or feeling, because heaven forbid you are not capable of working that out on your own.
Or the (cliché) key scenes:
- the dramatic run with the dito kill and horrified, powerless scream (in a strange way reminiscent of the ending of Boyz in the hood)
- the change of heart in prison
- the big confrontation with the former allies
- Danny's death and his monologue that goes with it. Oh no, he had JUST seen the error of his bla bla and was ready to really yadda yadda yadda. You know what, why don't you fill in the blanks? Because we all know just how this song and dance goes.
Does that mean it's all bad and it deserved the shit it got over the years?
Not really.
It's still worth a watch, even if only for Edward Norton's performance. He shows what he can do as Derek and earned one of his three Oscar nods and you can claim that it was deserved. Fairuza Balk delivered a good performance as the girlfriend, delivering a convincing portrayal of how some people can turn on loved ones when they change all too sudden and all to drastically. The more drastic the change, the more furious the response. And after mostly knowing him from the View Askew universe, it was kind of odd seeing Ethan Suplee as the hardcore neoazi. He sure was not looking for sailboats here.
Does this film have it's place in cinema history? Yes. Is it as prominent as the makers had hoped? Probably not.
The 5th Wave (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2304933/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_10)
The 5th wave delivered what it promised. Spectacular action, but nothing memorable. Pretty much what you can expect from your average dystopian "we are all going to die/they're coming to kill us"-sci fi scene.
Beverly Hills Cop* (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086960/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_10)
Ah, Beverly Hills Cop. That era when police vehicles seemed to be used more often as bumper cars than anything else and them doing pile-ups were de rigeur in films.
Eddie Murphy at his best with the brilliant laugh and the hilarious banana in the tailpipe-gag. Or the banter with Bronson Pinchot. The combination of which resulting in the type of action comedy that still holds up to this date.
Also: Would it be safe to say that there is a bit of Nick Frost in Judge Reinhold?
Four stars.
Death Wish 2018 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1137450/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_9)
A forgettable remake that adds little or nothing to the original. Paul Kersey is now a doctor instead of an architect, he has a video go viral and a few kills are a bit gorier, because Eli Roth.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day* (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103064/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_8)
The only single critical thing you can say about this one is that made the next ones - the diminishing returns, if you will - possible. As long as it makes money, they will beat this dead horse until Arnold dies.
Other than that, this is perfect entertainment.
First, there is a good and well told story. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with amongst others an incredible face turn, even though it only works the first time.
Then there are the practical effects which still hold up to this date. Heck, they even look better than a lot of productions that came later. No surprise that it won Stan Winston and his team an Oscar. Or the bit of trivia that Adam Jones was on the film's make-up team.
It makes the action all the more captivating. The main example of course being the infamous truck chase. Or when the evil Terminator stabs Xander Berkeley's character.
A classic that will still stand 20 years from now.

A comedy/horror about a young girl who's friends are getting killed off, one by one. Im sure most would consider it crap but i found it endearing and funny.

What was the technology selling point? Just new CGI you think?
The why is answered in the movie in a meta / inside joke I think. Which I borderline hated those scenes. I did post some bullet point comments on the HorrorDVDs topic here.

I don't want to spoil it though if you aren't going to see it.
In defense of the movie, Cyberpunk movies are usually a tough sell. Even the original Matrix was a word of mouth thing at first I think. The sequel was really big. And the final one according to wiki made less than the original.

THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR (2004). Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger are both good as parents trying to recover from a tragedy and hoping the hire of an aspiring writer will aid in that. Some good moments in here, but weird throughout and Jeff's character is really a tool, especially the way He treats Mimi Rogers, who has an eye opening scene here. **1/2

I don't think the original had the perfect ending unless you like endings on cliffhangers. I don't think The Matrix has a true ending yet. Perhaps it would be good to end the series as an anime movie.
Something like Megazone 23, which the directors say they weren't influenced by has a better true ending. At least Megazone 23 Part 2 and Part 3. I hate the ending to Megazone 23 Part 1.

I look forward to your review!
HF...You Got It::smile::!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RARE EXPORTS (2010). VERY unusual film, which made Me think of a cross between A CHRISTMAS STORY and THE THING, with a little GAME OF THRONES thrown in. Although there are other characters in the film, RE focuses mainly on a young boy and His Widowed Father, A Reindeer slaughterer is is almost at the end of his rope, financially speaking. Trying to keep Wolves away from his home, He digs a Hidden trap which does catch something. Could it possibly be Santa Claus, or something else?
Quite an imaginative effort and although I've read reviews where it seems implausible the Little Boy would know what to do, I think it works for the story and truly one of the Best, Funniest ending We've seen in sometime. ****

Time to play catch up:
Boo (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385560/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) was a nice little ghost flick with a spectacular ending.
Bumperkleef (aka Tailgate) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9015188/) is a solidly done Dutch thriller.
A somewhat unsympathetic family is on its way to the father's parents. On the way over, they manage to piss off a killer that sort of reminded me of Javier Bardem's character in No Country For Old Men. In the opening scene, we see what he is capable of, thus making it a bit disappointing that the film only had one kill.
However, there are good things about it as well. The confrontations are tension filled, built up by a good score. And near the end, it has a nice twist, reminiscent of Phone Booth and the only moment we see Kiefer Sutherland in it too. The actual end is a tad underwhelming, ending a minute too early, keeping us from seeing something that would have been predictable, yet add to the story and tension.

The Blair Witch Project* (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185937/)
I remember watching this in the theatre when it came out and being terrified. Also, I wondered wether it stood the test of time. Then, reading how a review here said this film has not aged well peaked my curiosity, so I checked it out again.
I mean, in a way, The Blair Witch Project already earned its place in movie history. It may technically not have been the first one to use this technique (even some bits of Peeping Tom could be seen as a bit of a precursor), it did lay the foundations of what later became the found footage style and set up some of its tropes, paving the way for The Poughkeepsie Tapes, VHS, (rec), Creep, Spree,... So it deserves credit for that.
What about the film itself then?
All in all, it held up surprisingly well. The build up works pretty well and sets up what later became the tropes of the subgenre: the foreshadowing interviews with the locals, the scares that gradually become more and more creepy, the group falling apart,...
You can argue on wether or not the characters are likable, but I think that's beside the point. From what I gather, you can understand the characters and their motivations. Heather wants to keep it together and make the film, so she keeps a strong face until she finally cracks too. Her monologue still holds up as well as the ending shots with her and Mike in the cellar. It still has me on the edge of my seat.
Good stuff.
Rose Blood: A Friday the 13th Fan Film (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13049516/)
This one had some good kills and a good bit of fan service, but it just did not do much for me.

URBAN LEGEND (1998). Decent SCREAM type film, although like that film and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, it's just a little too aware of how witty it is. Cast is good-seeing Brad Dourif and Robert Englund (Chuckie and Freddie::cool::!) along with a young Jared Leto and amazing how adorable Tara Reid was back then.
Also enjoy seeing Loretta Devine (SUPERNATURAL and great on GREY'S ANATOMY) as a Campus Cop..especially when she's watching the opening mayhem from COFFEY and reciting the action right along with Pam Grier::cool::!

JASON X (2001). Wasn't really expecting much from this and also the one film in the series I hadn't seen, but... while it's not great at all, it REALLY isn't half bad! At least, they were trying to do SOMETHING new with the series instead of the same old, same old. Kind of a cool premise for Jason , really good sets/special effects and got a good laugh at the "Alternate Universe" He finds himself in. Net seeing David Cronenberg in here and the Girl who gets it in the lab is the sister of Sebastian Bach, lead vocalist for 90's band Skid Row.
This did poorly at the Box office ands lots of detractors, but I enjoyed it more than I thought and would take this anyway over Parts's 3, 5 and 8. ***

CEMETARY MAN (1994). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Very offbeat film that details a Cemetery caretaker (Rupert Murdoch) who is a loner , all but ostracized by the local townspeople and really only one friend, "Gnaghi" (a cross between Curly of THE THREE STOOGES and Hodor from GAME OF THRONES) . For whatever reason, the Dead come back to life after a week and it's up to the Caretaker to dispatch them (some cool effects here). His life takes an unexpected turn when He falls head over heels with a Grieving Widow, known only as "She" (Anna Falchi, who appears in two more roles is absolutely stunning) and even "Gnaghi" finds love. But will this happiness last?
As mentioned, CM is unusual, beautifully shot, nice grue and quite funny throughout, but gets sort of weird towards the end and the ending left Me guessing. I think I would have enjoyed it more if Subtitles had been on the menu to help with my aging senses-in fact, I got more info about the story watching the trailer! ***1/2

AIRHEADS (1994). Reasonably funny tale of a Struggling band hoping to get a Demo tape played on the big local Radio station and the desperate steps they take to achieve this goal. AIRHEADS almost plays like a Time Capsule, capturing the aura of time with lots on In-Jokes and appearances by Music types and has a good cast, many who went on to bigger and better things (although I still don't get the hoopla about Adam Sandler). Biggest problem is the film has too slim a story to stretch out the running time and probably would have been funnier as a SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE series of episodes. **1/2

My daughter loved HB...at about that time, We had a cat (Sealpoint Himilayan) that looked exactly like Sassy.
AILEEN WOURNOS: THE SELLING OF A SERIAL KILLER (1993). Uneven in parts, but decent Doc on "America's First Female Serial Killer" as the media named her (Not true) with Court footage and interviews. While it focuses on her crimes, it seems there's more reveal of what the DVD jacket describes as "Conniving Opportunists" out to make a buck out of Media presentation from her story. The worst of the bunch is Aileen's "Adoptive" Mother and the Lawyer assigned to her case...it's almost appalling to see Greed in such detail.
As for Aileen herself, so incredibly damaged. What she did was certainly not cricket, but no doubt the first murder was self defense and her rage from her past probably pushed her over the edge. You will feel pity for her one moment and then Your blood will freeze when she shoots the angry look. ***

DEAD SNOW (2009). A group of Medical students go to an isolated cabin for some R'n'R, but fail to heed the advice of a passing hiker and then are set upon by Nazi zombies. While I appreciate the effort in making this, the people in here, for the most part, are foolish/obnoxious beyond belief; particularly a scene involving an outhouse. DS gets much inspiration from better films like CABIN FEVER (well, maybe not so much) DEAD-ALIVE, SHOCK WAVES and the EVIL DEAD series. Lots of gore and some funny parts, but not essential. **

WAYNES'S WORLD (1992). 30 year old comedy::shocked:: has still held up remarkably well and so many good parts in here. Gave new life to "Bohemian Rhapsody" (how funny and apropos that scene is...certainly brought back memories), ensured Alice Cooper of a new greeting from fans (His scene explaining the history of Milwaukee WI in such gravitas still makes Me chuckle) and feel Rob Lowe is great as the sleazy operator out to make a buck, almost a parody of his public image. While I appreciate a lot of Mike Myers script, find his character to be extremely annoying and even back then, the endless closeups of his Shit eating grin wore and wears thin real quick. It certainly helps the film to have other off the wall types in here. ****

CREATURE FEATURE: 60 YEARS OF THE GILLMAN (2015). Decent doc of THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and its two sequels. Although there isn't a lot more info to be gleaned-if You've watched the Special Features on the DVD, You gotten the history behind them all- , the "Fan-ness" of this makes it worth Your time. Some truly obsessive fans out there with neat collections and even a convention in Florida where the underwater scenes were filmed. Liked how Millicent Patrick, the Disney animator and primary sketch artist for the Creature's "look", is given more appreciation here; it's rotten how a jealous Bud Westmore took all the credit.
Interviews with Ricou Browning (the Creature underwater), the late Julie Adams (Kay) and the late Ben Chapman (Creature on land) are also fun. The latter two come off as very nice and in my experience with them, I can concur. Julie's website was one of the very first I ordered merchandise from; misunderstood the P/H rates and sent more. She mailed Me my picture along with my change, which she didn't have to do. As for Ben , I ordered twice for his site; quick delivery and little extras thrown in. At my first MONSTER BASH (6/2007), was planning to meet him after Elvira (third in line);sadly, She took her sweet time getting on the "Gear" and getting out there. Ben had taken sick in the meantime, going back to his room to rest and sadly passed away a few months later::sad::. ***

BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD (2007)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
First rate performances by the late Philip Seymour Hoffmann (some eerie parallels concerning his character's recreation habits), Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Albert Finney. Two brothers are in deep financial straights and one comes up with an idea to improve this; mainly by robbing a "Mom and Pop" jewelry store which happens to belong to their Mom and Pop! It seems like a fool proof plan where no one will get hurt, but of course, Murphy's Law is in full effect and things continue to go downhill.
Really enjoy this...suspenseful as Hell and Marisa is stunningly beautiful, albeit fragile. If nothing else, the very first scene is very much an eyeopener! ****

Mystery, 'who done it'. Mildly entertaining. Smoothly paced, nicely shot, lively acting. I guessed the murderer, it added up, but it's really more of the anyone could have done it till the last scene. I prefer a 'who done it' that eliminates suspects, and points to others, along the way.

Problem with each of these movies imo is that, even though the separate parts (say beginning, middle, end) make sense and are enjoyable, the plot as a whole gives us too little to reflect on. To me a good horror movie is one I think back to on the next day. Extremity has nothing to add to Hostel, and Wrong Turn has nothing to add to The Hills have Eyes. What Extremity does have though is style.
Side note: in Wrong Turn we see a total of five people make seemingly dangerous falls and none of them get hurt by that. Impressive. ::roll eyes::

I found this hard going, especially when We find out who the killer is so early. The interplay between Jeffery Coombs and Sarah Thompson was awkward-He's her supervisor/lover and despite being a Huge jerk and married/kids, She's practically leaping at the chance to rekindle-WHY??
Just nothing exceptional here, although it was nice seeing Michael Berryman playing a halfway sympathetic character for a change. **

Witchboard III: The Possession (1995) ★★½
Your average ouija board/ghostie fun, though not as scary as you would expect from the subgenre.
But it does have one or two things going for itself, like a few good kills and fun moments. The lacklustre ending keeps it from earning a third star.
Tommy Jarvis
11-13-2022, 10:45 AM
Troll Hunter (2010) ★★★½
Interesting stuff, this.
One of the new elements is that the film lets up every now and again. You are so used to found footage not letting up once the scary stuff sets in that you feel odd to see a bit of down time between scary moments.
Based on the subject matter, you would expect a lot of blurry images. But this one shows the trolls in all their glory. A good chunk of the two million dollar budget must have gone to special effects. CGI in a found footage film? Could that be a thing?
The biggest surprise? The big villain is not the trolls, but mankind. Cool or womp womp? Not entirely sure.
Two points of criticism, though:
The idea of letting up makes the ending more sudden and a whole lot less scary than it could have been. Secondly, the casting of Norwegian comedians is a cool inside joke. But then again, it does not really add to the credibility of the found footage idea.

50 BEST HORROR MOVIES YOU'VE NEVER SEEN (2014). PJ Soles narrated TUBI offering that is a decent watch, but better for a neophyte Horror fans. Lots of clips (Thankfully little to no spoilers) and comments by many quite enthusiastic people, including some "Scream Queens"-Linnea, Brinke and Michelle.
While I question some of the choices-INSIDE, FOOD OF THE GODS, CASTLE FREAK, SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT- ,it's good to see some films that deserve another look-PUMPKINHEAD, WRONG TURN, THE DESCENT, TRILOGY OF TERROR, HARD CANDY.
Some of the films listed I had not heard of -ALONE WITH HER, JOSHUA, GRACE-and some others I hadn't seen in some time-REPULSION, HALLOWEEN 3:SEASON OF THE WITCH, VISITING HOURS, VISITING HOURS. If nothing else, it gave Me some ideas.
The #1 film they pick...Well, it wouldn't be cricket to tell You. I wouldn't place it so high, but there is no denying its legacy. ***

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) ★★★★½
I will never get tired of this.
FDTD set the standard for badassery in the past 30 years. Regardless of wether it is in terms of cast or in terms of set pieces.
It's a pity Clooney only did this one before going more mainstream. Then again, he did do the one, so there's that. Then there's the casting of cult heroes typical of Tarantino, like Fred Williamson, Cheech Marin or Michael Parks. Or launching the careers of Danny Trejo and Salma Hayek.
Tom Savini delivers what's probably his coolest role since Dawn of the dead and his turning scene is simply hilarious. As much as the banter between the Gecko's. Bitch, bitch, bitch.
26 years old and not getting any less cool.

Fear Street: 1666 (2021) ★★
With the declining level of part 2, I went in with less than stellar expectations. More of a let's get this thing over with-feel.
In all fairness, it was not all that terrible. At least not Transformers-terrible. The dead kids-moment was pretty good and the first reveal had a good set up.
The rest was laid on too thick. With the "goode is evil"-line as the lame topper. And since this is the last part, we are up to our ears in full circle stuff. Not terrible, it just did not do much for me.

The Last Broadcast (1998) ★★★½
The Last Broadcast was a precursor to what we now know as found footage. Contrary to other found footage films, however, this focuses more on the crime investigation behind the deaths of the makers of Facts or Fiction.
I did like how they managed to hang an eerie, foreboding atmopshere over the footage the guys shot. Also, the film did not actually show what happened to Locus and Steven, but we do get an unexpected twist and kill. Granted, it did come from out of nowhere, but it also raises questions like "why would this person do that?"
Nevertheless, it was pretty entertaining overall and it managed to create tension in a different way than the ones that came later. Not the best in the genre, but certainly not the worst.

Yes, that is the one.
NOBODY (2021). Decent actioneer of a Guy who just seems to go through the motions at work and in all phases of home life until a minor incident pushes Him over into "Kick Ass and Take No Prisoners" mode. Christopher Lloyd is great in here, especially during a "Company Coming" scene. ***

Leprechaun 2 (1994) ★★
A bland hero with an eighties vibe, a love intrest somewhere between Alicia Silverstone and Nicola Peltz and a villain with a few groanworthy puns. That's your Leprechaun-sequel*recipe.
Good for a few ironic chuckles and one or two fun*kills.

The Dentist 2 (1998) ★★
A nineties slasher with a bit of an eighties vibe. Not too terrible, but it could have done better on both the kill count and the originality of the kills. The finale with the nail gun is okay. The end is a bit too cartoonish to be scary, but enjoyable in its own way.

VOODOO MOON (2006). Twenty years after a Demon destroys their town, a Brother and sister attempt to find answers and right wrongs.
This SYFY offering is dull, dull, dull, even with likable performers like Jeffrey Coombs, Charisma Carpenter, Dee Wallace and John Amos (who does the best job here).
Lots of long stretches and cheesy effects...VM isn't really worth Your time. *

THE MOTHER (2003). Anne Reid is great as the long time housewife/mother who loses her husband while visiting her children. Her dormant sexuality is awakened, and in a big way, by a pre-James Bond Daniel Craig. Complications may arise owing to the fact that Dan is also seeing Anne's needy clingy daughter. ***

OPERATION FINALE (2018). Very good film detailing how Israeli agents captured and spirited Adolf Eichman to Jerusalum for trial. Although I'm familiar with the history, tension creeps in as endless roadblocks pile up and Ben Kingsley is great as the manipulative unrepentant Nazi. ***1/2

Sometimes They Come Back… Again (1996) ★★★
In this bit of the extended Stephen King-universe, the dad from Family Ties saves Hillary Swank from the devil. The devil has a few good kills and, together with a few fun moments, that's enough to make it a good warm up on a Friday*night.
Not great, but overall*entertaining.

Slumber Party Massacre (2021) ★★★½
Finally got around to watching it and... it's a bit of a mixed*bag.
There's a lot of good about this film. The opening wastes no time in getting to the good stuff. No messing about, I like it. The kills are good and gory. Good stuff. Of course, this film has its share of fan service and nods to the original (the speech, the body in the fridge, the guitar) and there's also a nod to Pamela Voorhees and maybe even Nailgun Massacre. Putting the spin on the speech also was a good idea, same as with the shower*scene.
Adding the Scream-like knowedgeability and savviness may have been a good idea on paper, but here it just leads to a load of exposition which takes away from the storytelling. Along with the whininess of the killer(s), it somehow adds a bit of a "no biggie" atmosphere.*
Also: show, don't tell. Maybe it's me growing up with heroines like Ellen Ripley, but showing you're a badass is more entertaining than just saying it. Maybe it's a generational thing, but it seems to me that the viewer does not need to spoonfed what to remember or think. You don't have to shoehorn in what you want to say. We can figure out things on our own, you*know.
Overall a good remake, though. It pays hommage to the original, adds a few new elements and as a stand alone film, it works as*well.

Leprechaun (1993) ★★★
Ah, 1993. When you could stretch a goofy idea into a franchise. And when cordless ringing phones were considered scary. I'm your boyfriend now, Jennifer. Oh yeah, Jennifer Aniston is in this. Scream queen Jennifer Aniston would have been fun too, but I'm pretty sure her bank account*disagrees.
It's not that bad and overall entertaining. The Leprechaun gets one or two nice kills (with the pogo kill standing out) and you can tell that Warwick Davis had a lot of fun playing*Leprechaun.

Halloween Ends (2022) ... 'Halloween Without a Cause'
4/10
The last of the Jamie Lee Curtis' three-part reboot. At least they tried an interesting idea, that I can't reveal, as it's a spoiler. It's nothing new, and pretty obvious from the beginning of the film... but interesting none the less.
I don't think the main premise coincided well with the film's conclusion. The plots seemed to disconnect rather than merge or supersede.
Felt a bit like 'Rebel Without a Cause' meets 'Ben' and 'Scream'... but in a cliche, this-is-way-too-familiar way. Old stories can have interesting new aspects or straight up twists... or can simply be done really well. Can't say the film succeeded there.
Perhaps the worst failure, considering the Halloween horror handle, is that it's not a very scary nor suspenseful film.
I did like the cinematography, and the intriguing and nuanced performances from leads Rohan Campbell and Andi Matichak. I think we'll see bigger things from Campbell.
