That's too bad. The Ouija board is such a rich device for a some really good horror (and still is). And hearing an accomplished screenplay writer/director like Mike Flanagan took it up, has me very interested. I'll see this film soon.

The Witch (2015 film)
5/10

A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession.

A devoted period and subject matter piece, which I have to respect. Nice acting and cinematic technique, and out-of-the-ordinary presentation and story.

I liked the presentation of authentic belief system as character and setting. The director adopted dialogue directly from written documents of the period. However, generally speaking, people don't speak the way they write, nor they way the give legal testimony -- and unlikely the way they talk and act in private with their family. And so the characters and dialogue are often stiff. I think not only more stiff than artistically required, even stiffer than in authenticity.

I didn't find the film enjoyable. It took me as rather bleak from beginning to end without any saving counter-point. It wasn't suspenseful, but rather mildly curious and mysterious. I found the ending climax also bleak, subdued and ambiguous.

I don't get all the hate for this movie, i thought it was pretty good. They balanced all the characters well and were well utilized. Apocalypse was a great villain and i enjoyed the story even during the slow parts. I am a little tired of the whole "see the good in you" solution when dealing with Magneto but besides that i had no problem with the film. Much like Days of Future Past, Quicksilver steals the show and had the best part of the movie. This is definitely the weakest of the new trilogy but by no means a bad movie.

Doctor Strange (2016)

"A former neurosurgeon embarks on a journey of healing only to be drawn into the world of the mystic arts."

This was really cool. I wasn't sure how Benedict Cumberbatch would do leading a superhero movie, but he did great. I haven't seen him in much, but he's proven to me to be a very versatile actor. I liked the magic aspect that hasn't really been touched on in other Marvel movies. The one tiny gripe I had was the kinda-sorta love story between Strange and his nurse friend/girlfriend. It was unnecessary and half-baked. The special effects were some of the coolest I've seen.

James Wan for DC's AQUAMAN flick, Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) for THOR: Ragnarok and now Scott Derrickson (Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver us from Evil & Sinister) for this...Hollywood's eye on contemporary horror movie directors for their big budget superhero flicks is interesting. For both genre, this is a good thing, I guess.

Alright you guys wtf did I just watch... This was either the coolest movie or the DUMBEST I have ever seen. At least I have my verdict for best in the trilogy.

The coolest!
And now you can enjoy the Ash Vs Evil Dead series which is basically a sequel in series format that's just as good.

Btw, the movie has two different endings. Both quite alright.

Interesting ideas afloat in this film, you need to go into the movie ready to use your brain ala sci-fi like Interstellar and Cloud Atlas. Finicky critics like horrorcrux will have to decide whether they like the concepts the films introduces or is more frustrated by the lack of resolution.

I really liked this. What made this film for me was the time spent on the two main characters and the drama between them. They put a lot of time into showing the horrible relationship between the mother and daughter but also into her desire to get better for her daughter. The movie works as a tale of redemption as well as a pretty good monster movie.

When Ted's beloved cat dies, the trauma triggers a mental breakdown. His broken brain prompts him to bring his feline friend back - all he needs is nine human lives.

Finally watched it last night. Really enjoyed it! So weird but it really works. Gruesome, fun, interesting and well made. It's possibly not for everyone though! But I liked it. And I would certainly like to see more of Shian Denovan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2704691/?ref_=tt_cl_t2). Dayum! Matthew C. Ditto. Saw it last night. Really liked the way it slowly builds the characters & their stories as well as cleverly plotted haunting atmosphere throughout. The mother-daughter relationship was the main strength of this movie/story. One of the best genre flicks of 2016 so far, IMO.

**SPOILER BELOW**
My only complaint was their final "escape plan" planned by the mother! Man...that was kinda stupid! Yeah...the circumstances or the way they were cornered considering the situation was understandable but as they figured the monster was afraid of lights and as long they had fire & a torch light, the mother should take a chance of running with her daughter by firing the whole woods down behind or could have face the same fate while confronting it together on the way.

Night of Something Strange 2016

Disappointing. The trailer made it seem like Night of Something Strange was going be a fun campy gore fest. There is a lot of gore and some of it grossed me out while making me laugh at the same time. Which was great. The acting was poor except for the first/main monster zombie/creature/etc. There's very little story, just an excuse for a lot of gore/gross out scenes. However after a 2nd rape scene in a bit over 30 minutes I had to turn it off.

The Fifth Wave -

Pretty good for the first quarter or so. But it falls apart of turns into a predictable story afterwards. I read a few reviews and the wiki and this is supposed to be from a Young Adult type novel. So I guess that's why. But the first part is still really good. And the actress will probably get tons of awards in the future. She's one to watch.

Also, I think one of the trailers spoiled the movie too. I don't know if it was the teaser or full trailer. Or maybe just one of the actors. But what happened towards the end was also not that much of a twist. And too much setup for sequels.

Hell House LLC (http://foundfootagecritic.com/hell-house-llc-2016/hell-house-llc-2016-review/) (2016)

https://s12.postimg.org/feq91u43x/Hell_House_LLC_Stephen_Cognetti.jpg

Hell House LLC chronicles a documentary team investigating a small town's biggest story - an abandoned hotel that about to serve as a Halloween fun-house, turned into a location of an unsolved massacre at the opening night in 2009. The documentary team is getting expert and eyewitness testimony, pictures and amateur video from that night in October, and then there were some personal tapes from the only survivors - one of the attraction's workers who experienced the horror from start to finish. What she has on those tapes leads them to new discoveries...that abandoned hotel & its dark past had its own tricks & scares to manipulate the "man-made haunts"!

Pretty decent found footage flick. Like The Houses October Built, this is also set around a haunted house attraction but not only enjoyed it more, overall a better film than THOB, IMO.

Pretty intense and a little gory. This one has been part of my Christmas playlist for a few years now. The two leads, Wes Bentley and Rachel Nichols are excellent in very demanding roles, and Nichols is quite easy on the eyes.

I got that one on vhs. it's the perfect time to watch it now sense it's Christmas time. it's ether a fun time of the season or a scary time of the season haha never got the sequel though. just only have it on a recorded tape and eventually ripped it offline. because of my vhs recorded tape there's something wrong with it. It has a low pitch sound. Not a good quality sound now.

I'm jealous, I can't find this on VHS on ebay for a cheap enough price. ...Although for a broke college student nothing is cheap enough. hahaaa

Picked this up yesterday. As soon as I read it was related to the succubus segment in VHS I had to nab it, instantly! Waiting until tommorrow to watch it with my buddy. The first time I saw said film was with him, so it seems only right to watch it's together. Ironically, I grabbed VHS: Viral at another store then stop by Walmart and by pure happenstance I came across Siren.

Saw Reincarnate Mon and liked it a lot. I would highly recommend it to fans of exorcist films.

And I just saw Nocturnal Animals earlier today. Be warned it is a very heavy art film with one of the most bizarre beginnings I've ever seen. I'd put it in my post but I can't find the spoiler feature?

Ya, same thoughts. I don't think this was the time for a Suicide Squad film. Seemed like it was going through the motions in a very cliche film, considering the superhero films immediately before it (Deadpool/Guardians of the Galaxy). Felt like it was trying too hard to be edgy. It just really had nothing to say and no heart.

Legend Of Tarzan was OK. Tarzan didn't act enough like Tarzan for my liking but it was decent. I really liked Margot Robbie as Jane!!::wink::

Also watched Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children... Another OK movie. I love Eva Green but felt like she was very underused. Some of the ideas where quite fun. The plot was a little wonky in places and there just wasn't enough character development for my liking. However I still feel like it's one of the better Tim Burton movies of recent years.

A thriller centered on a young woman and her autistic little brother who are trapped in a house with a ravenous tiger during a hurricane.

The scenes with the tiger were surprisingly well done, considering it must have been a tough thing to shoot, but it was still extremely limited in what it could do and the movie suffered for it. And I know the autistic brother was supposed to be annoying, but it didn't stop me wanting him to be mauled to death. 6/10

A cybernetic warrior from a post-apocalyptic future travels back in time to protect a 19-year old drifter and his future wife from a most advanced robotic assassin and to ensure they both survive a nuclear attack.

The film has a lot of exciting vehicle stunts and destruction (almost entirely non-CG). It's basically one long chase scene. I give it credit for being exciting... nicely shot, good effects, big budget.

Unfortunately, there's very little character exposition, nor social commentary, and therefore no worthwhile humor or relationships... something the first two films did, and did well.

Suffers for its lack of 80's charm, and isn't as bizarre as the first two. Still, it's well made - with great makeup and prosthetics. A slightly more mature and subdued performance from Jeffrey Combs (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001062/?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm) than the previous two, whilst still maintaining all the egomaniacal joy of the character. Songs will be butchered, and blood will be tested. Friends will become rivals and rivals will become hungry. But at the end of the journey, when the game is over, the man who wins will be the best man.

Concept sounded cool. It was not. Machismo, rivalry, desire to impress - all taken to the extreme, and with good performances from the actors. But the actual substance of the movie was ridiculous. It went from one silly, uninspired scenario to the next, without going anywhere interesting.

A Family Stone (2005) PG-13
8/10

An uptight, conservative businesswoman accompanies her boyfriend to his eccentric and outgoing family's annual Christmas celebration and finds that she's a fish out of water in their free-spirited way of life.

Funny and sweet adult family film about family, love, acceptance, differences and fitting-in. The first three-fourths of the film are well paced with a few beautiful outdoor and indoor scenery sets, inner-family humor, warm family love, light story exposition, and a couple heavy family change of life issues; softly done with a large ensemble cast.

The last forth of the film became a bit too densely packed with syrupy sentimentality. It also went with one incredibly unlikely scenario that seemed to snowball into an unwelcome overall feeling of ridiculousness and disassociation.

The film does tackle, or perhaps tries to champion, a couple divisive societal issues. It's partly used as conflict and acceptance plot points, where there had to be one; however the particular issues may also jolt some audience members out of the film's warm immersion and into a circumspect and guarded state. So the film goes niche... Not sure the producers knew just how close it was to being universal gold.

Lastly, as Repo'd would say, all the women are very easy on the eyes.

The Ref - 8.5/10
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110955/

A great comedy in the vein of "The war of the roses", but with less physical comedy and - dare I say - sharper, wittier dialogue. Leary is good, but the arguing between Judy Davis and Kevin Spacey will have you in stitches. Spacey's line about nailing yourself to the cross is gold.

Not a big fan of Denis Leary but Kevin Spacey's pretty good in general.
I'll check it out.

Brilliant film.
One of the better and more original (Christmas) horror movies of the last years.
I'd say it's also the best Krampus movie while not actually being about Krampus.

If you were pleasantly surprised with Andre ovredal's TROLLHUNTER (2010), then you will regard him now as your new 'Master of Horror' - in his latest & first English-language film The Autopsy of Jane Doe! Because, in Jane Doe, this Norwegian director applied almost each & every great craftsmanship of horror film-making so skillfully that you are not only going to see just another good or passable horror flick set around an awesomely interesting premise, you'll going to experience it! Through the effective use of half light, sound & shadow this time he created an utterly eerie & unsettling atmosphere by revealing not too much but keep toying with the viewer's imagination from start to finish. And the perfect cast & characterization also helps to fuel the unease feeling of an unknown terror – an untouched & unidentified corpse of a beautiful young female; the local cops discovered the body from a shallow grave under the basement of a house-where everyone was massacred!

The best horror film of 2016 so far! A must watch.

I like the first one and I like found footage but this was bad in many ways.

According to Imdb, the budget for this one was about 5 million while the first one has an estimate of 60 thousand.
As Above So Below, another found footage, also had a budget of about 5 million.
That movie was made in Paris, has a bigger cast and looks more expensive with its props, sceneries, effects,...
So where did all that Blair Witch budget go? Trees and dirt?

Odd little movie, that starts out very Wes Anderson before delving further into symbolism and metaphors. It's a sweet little movie in places, but I was happy for the short run-time. Only Wes Anderson can do a Wes Anderson movie.

I give it an A-
Solid and original horror movie.
Probably some mistake but on Imdb the length's 99 minutes.
Version I saw was 86.

I'm already looking forward to the director's next movie: Mortal.
About a guy who gets godlike powers. Lead will be played by an actor from Misfits.
I do hope it's R-Rated otherwise it might be another young adult fantasy adventure.

I enjoyed Rogue One more than Force Awakens too. I think Rogue, and I, were much more free of the prior Star Wars character baggage.

As you say, "The Force Awakens (which was more like an 'old wine in a new bottle' sort of reboot treatment, IMO)." Force had too many winks at the prior films, creating an unwelcome dissociative experience (nudging me that I'm watching a film about a film).

I liked all 6 (prior) Star Wars films, which knew how to move forward -- not always in a good way, but at least creating a new experience, and often more than just entertainment.

So I give Rogue green for a new experience, but I can't say I thought Rogue or Force Awakens were very good. I thought they mildly entertaining.

I thought Rogue's main characters were too undeveloped for me to know or care about them. But at least their motivations were clear (unlike Force Awakens). I give Force Awakens points for being intriguing, whereas I don't think either created enough deep cinematic suspense.

What you think of the use of CG human characters?

Can't disagree with your points on character baggage & lack of originality issues. Though I'm not certain but I think that is where George Lucas & the Studio couldn't reach to a mutual agreement on how to move forward with the story line gradually. After his sad mess with the rise of Darth Vader trilogy, I've doubt that they have consider any of his idea relating to in what direction the series should go next. And now as we see they are mostly treating this whole re-birth of the franchise thing with a 'fandom' approach, focusing & repeating the things that the fans mostly like about the original saga. For a time being, it is a 'safe move' for both the Disney & Lucasfilm but it will be interesting to see how they going pitch the new things (including characters, story arc with fresh twists & turns) slowly into the new saga. Because eventually they have to do that & they know that, otherwise the same fans going to get tired of it at some point.
The thing that I mostly liked about the R1 was it's about the unsung heroes of the rebellions who were also fighting for the same great cause but without much direct influence of the Force or some Jedi backup. Found mostly the Cargo pilot guy who was the messenger for Galen Erso was underdeveloped or needed some back story.
One thing I'm still looking forward to see a strong, important or bad ass good guy sort of character from other species (obviously with human traits/values) other than just for some comic relief or as a side kick in this new saga. For example, they could have made the Rebel intelligence office Cassian somewhat like that. But liked the addition of Asian characters - Chirrut & Baze into the story. Thought the action scenes, particularly the final battle was pretty awesome, better executed than TFA.

I don't have any complain of using CG characters as long the story needs them there as now they have the supportive tech to properly fit them in, but yeah...surprised to see the CGI Grand Moff Tarkin got that much good amount of screen time here. It kinda gave me goosebumps, man!

Yes, I agree, loved seeing the asian and middle eastern characters take major roles in this. I was joking on my radio show that we would see many many Bothans die in this film (i.e "Many Bothans have died to bring us this information"), but we didn't see many non-human creatures playing major character roles in this film either.

And yes, I really hope the sequel to Force Awakens has some very new film experiences, concepts, stories and characters, cause Force was way too fandom for me.

I most decidedly think it was a mistake to use a CG face of Peter Cushing because when I saw him it completely took me out of the film/story! I didn't catch a word Tarkin said because I was immediately studying that face and voice... first thinking "Is Mr Cushing still alive?". Then I was studying the life-likeness levels of the face and movement, judging it. Then I was assessing if that was Cushing voice, even maybe a digital recreation... which is a compliment to actor Guy Henry, who did the voice, and was the body actor.

I wouldn't have minded an actor that looked like an ever so slightly younger looking Peter Cushing. I'm mean, let's be real here... Cushing was a minor character, only appearing in A New Hope, a 1977 film. Or just don't use Tarkin. The story didn't require him, and certainly didn't require showing him. In that respect, thinking about it now... it really was a fandom appearance.

This movie traumatized me as a kid and I never fully watched it, but some friends wanted to watch it and I figured I had a change of view in horror enough to handle it, and I did. I liked it a lot better now than I had then that is for sure. Relied heavily on CGI, but for it's time the effects weren't horrible. Silent Night (2012)

Second viewing. Still a decent Christmas slasher with some decent blood and gore, good effects and better than average acting considering the genre.

I thought that movie was a mess.

I really enjoyed this. The story was different from your typical my next door neighbor is a killer trope due to the kids sociopathy, what exactly the killer is, and from how the movie develops. A good watch from beginning to end.

This was really good. I love a good monster movie especially one with a good story. The monster story itself was a simple monster tale but with the backdrop of the war in Iran and the bombings it made it much more interesting. Relied a little too heavily on jump scares but still pretty good.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

This was excellent. The story is really creative and original and the movie itself is really creepy. The mortuary provides a great isolated setting and Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch give great performances. The mystery keeps you really interested and the reveal was totally unexpected.

All reviews say this is a gawd awful film. I kinda liked it. It is an Australian creature feature. Beautiful cinematography of the out back. Aussie humo{u}r and amazing looking guys. ::love:: It was a fun watch that felt made for TV. Enjoyed this first watch of 2017.
