From Dusk Til Dawn
Can you say "so bad it's good"?
I thought the ending did the film justice. I did think of an ending I would have liked more, but I was satisfied with where they took it. Overall, it's a fun little Halloween romp.
Agreed, but just out of curiosity, what was your idea for an ending?

I liked that they ended up buried alive, but had they been made a part of the haunted attractions, I would have loved it. Either as body parts or as captives behind the glass at some of the haunts.

'Bone Tomahawk' (2015)
-Kurt Russell
Plot: Rotten Tomatoes
In the Old West, a sheriff (Kurt Russell), his deputy (Richard Jenkins), a gunslinger (Matthew Fox),and a cowboy (Patrick Wilson) embark on a mission to rescue three people from a savage group of cave dwellers.
Phantom's Review: This is a wonderful movie, but it's definitely NOT for everyone. This is a slow burn, dialogue driven character piece. The action is all but non existent, and the horror aspects only happen towards the end. Instead you get a superbly acted movie with some of the best written dialogue that I have ever heard. In fact , there's barely even music. Kurt Russell is excellent as always, but to honest the whole cast is great.. If you want an action packed, blood soaked western , then look somewhere else. If you want to enjoy some great acting, then try to catch 'Bone Tomahawk'

The Green Inferno.
I suppose for the gore factor it was okay, though the plot wasn't all that great. I, also, felt that the ending should of have been more in depth with a certain character's death, but that's just me being vindictive.
Overall, I'd give it a 6/10.

Evil Dead (Original) - I wrote this review before watching Evil Dead 2.
I was surprised that this was Sam Raimi's first full movie. It has tons of crazy effects and camera shots. It's a really impressive first release. After seeing this movie I get why some don't like the remake. I don't understand changes to remake. And I was expecting things to happen because I saw the remake and some notable imagery from those older movies like poster artwork. When those things didn't happen I was confused. Anyway, it's a very dark, graphic, and gruesome movie. Even more than the remake at times. I can see where a lot of Cabin in the Woods came from with Evil Dead. Definitely a movie all horror fans need to see.
Evil Dead 2 -
I didn't get the opening to this one. At first I thought Ash was taking another girl to the cabin. Then I thought it was a dream sequence. But it seems to be a retelling of the original movie. I don't know why they didn't go the Friday the 13th Part 2 route. Or just start right where they left Part 1. They also added comedy to Part 2 which was strange and made me think why am I watching this at times. However after seeing it, I now get what the Evil Dead remake did. They tried to do something similar to the Friday the 13th remake. Combine what they thought were the best elements and add their own touch. I think it was kind of a good idea. As Evil Dead 1 & 2 go to places that seem kind of odd and lean towards more horror, comedy, and sci-fi. Where the remake is straight horror. I still like the remake. At least I wasn't as offended by it like many people I've seen review it on horror forums. The remake is more in the spirit of the original Evil Dead and the overall themes than the Friday the 13th remake. I think in some ways Evil Dead isn't a movie that needed a remake. It's so out there that it's best left alone. I haven't seen Part 3 yet. But it's not something I'm really looking forward to.

I thought the most recent Evil Dead was more of a movie that took place in the same universe, with another group of teens who release the evil. The cut alternate ending seemed to confirm this but I wonder if we'll ever get an unrated release with the other endings.

The Martian (2015)
It seems in recent years that there is maybe one really good sci-fi epic each year. 2012 was Prometheus; 2013 had Gravity; last year saw Interstellar; and this year has The Martian. Each movie has their own distinct style and can be enjoyed for different reasons. Of the four, The Martian is probably the most light-hearted and fun to watch, but don't let my words fool you. There are some insanely intense scenes to be found here. Based on the novel of the same name, The Martian is about astronaut Mark Watney who is presumed dead after a violent storm and left behind by the crew. He actually lives and must survive on Mars for months with meager supplies and his own ingenuity. Ridley Scott directed this film, and he was desperately in need of a success after the financial and commercial disappointments of Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Counsler. Luckily, he delivers one of his most spectacular movies to date that's capable of making you laugh and putting you on the edge of your seat. The final act of the film is particularly nail-biting, drawing comparisons to some of Gravity's most terrifying scenes. But what makes The Martian such a hit is its heart. Besides its great humor and amazing characters, it emphasizes the value and integrity of the human spirit. It may not go into the more philosophical implications of those themes too much, but when a movie is this well crafted, that hardly matters. The Martian is up there with the other great sci-fi epics of recent years, and it's certainly one of the best films of the year.
Also, if a movie has "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor in the credits, it's automatically a good movie.
And Matt Damon's pecs.

Spectre (2015)
http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p433/sanjidparvez/Spectre_zpslou7vwpg.jpg
When QUANTAM OF SOLACE (2008) came out, one of the major complaints was QOS was more of a Jason Bourne flick than Bond. There were too much actions and less of Bond materials in the story. Now in compare to that, if I say this in a short, simple and to the point manner, the news is yesterday I went to the theater with an expectation to see at least a decent, time passing James Bond movie but after spending nearly two & half hour in the theater what I saw...wasn't a Bond flick at all!
Daniel Craig's most probably last outing as 007 and Sam Mendes' 2nd consecutive Bond film SPECTRE was nothing but a travesty of a Bond movie! Though it did try to follow the traditional Bond formula in its basic plotline with a great line of cast but from the very beginning all it was able to did was to become something else other than a Bond movie. The most weird thing was, intentionally or not, this time Sam Mendes unnecessarily gave totally an offbeat, dark and strangely depressing mood all over in SPECTRE. At times it was even surprisingly slow and irrationally dragged for a Bond movie. Action sequences were very average and more than that the Bond-momentum was terribly missing from the beginning to the end! As a lifelong 007 fan, it was painful to see when they finally but forcefully put the signature Bond theme at those final last shots, it was like some regular, average action flick just used that soundtrack in the background not only for some weird funny reasons but illegally as well; it was totally out of place. Now the frustrating thing was it actually had some interesting idea but Mendes and his team completely failed to play with them creatively. Now to live up to the expectations of the fans and compete with younger agents like Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt at the box office, I think it still very much possible to provide a typically entertaining and successful Bond movie by keeping things faithful to its tradition, style and source material but this franchise seriously need some bit more brave and imaginative writers in coming days as well as young and talented directors like James Gunn, Edgar Wright or not sure Guy Ritchie may be.
If you still really want to see the unspectacular SPECTRE, better wait for the DVD or a TV viewing as movie of the week/month or better skip it. It doesn't worth your time and money at the theater for sure.

"Howl" 8/10
For the most part dialogue and character driven, but still a good suspenseful werewolf flick. And of course you can't make a british horror movie on a decent budget without having Sean Pertwee in it. Goes without sayin.
This is on my 'to watch' list!!
The Cave (2005)
A good straight forward monster movie.
I really like this movie!!

"The Hallow"/"The Woods" 7-8/10
Ever since I saw the movie poster on the front page of IMDB titled as The Woods I kinda hoped this would be the horror movie to beat this year coz the story sounded sweeet. Sadly, it's not quite. You have to wait almost half the movie before the shit hits the fan, but when it does creatures pops out everywhere and the action doesn't stop before the credits starts to roll. The creatures are well made and the fx are nice.
My biggest problem was the mom. Her actions (or lack thereof) pissed me off. Also when the action begins the story kinda falls flat.
There ya go. See it and judge for yourself.
Another film to add to my list!! Thank you!!

"Saving Christmas"
Wanna see something reeeeally scary? Like mind-blowingly horrific?
After 30 minutes I had to turn it off. At that time I felt raped. Raped by Kirk Cameron, Jesus Christ, God, Santa Claus and especially writer/director Darren Doane. I hope that guy never gets to make a movie ever again. If I wanted someone to force christianity down my throat this badly I'd have to shoot myself.
What the hell was I thinking..
Even if this was the last movie on earth available to watch, I wouldn't even try it. You must have been REALLY bored??!!
I was actually expecting a PG-13. The trailer didn't seem like it would be terribly gory or have any sex. It just looks like a fun Christmas horror movie. I'm excited for it!
Me too horcrux!!
So? I'll wish you a Merry Christmas and you wish me whatever you like. If somebody wishes me Happy Kwanza or Hanukkah then I smile and say thank you. They're not asking me to "believe" in their holiday, they're spreading cheer. Nobody has to tip-toe around me, their goal in life shouldn't be to make sure they don't accidentally offend me.
Well said!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just happen to like Kirk Cameron. Mostly for his younger days as an actor. Back when he was a satanist. And to be fair, he played the part as himself really, really well. Like watching a documentary about Kirk Cameron celebrating Christmas. A christmas party I would never want to participate in.

Spectre (2015)
Coming after a film as good as Skyfall as well as this summer's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is going to be difficult for the next Bond film. There are some impossibly high standards that will have to be met for people to be satisfied. Spectre obviously isn't going to be the franchise's next "masterpiece," but it does offer a suitably engaging and action-packed thrill ride. In Spectre, M must fight political forces to keep the secret service in operation, while Bond must use a message from his past to find the truth behind SPECTRE. Spectre is much more like the classic Bond films updated for a modern audience. A nail-biting action sequence in a helicopter opens the film in gloriously absurd fashion. Unrealistic? Many scenes in the movie will surely stretch reality, but Spectre is too entertaining and well-directed to really have a negative impact. I also have to mention the beautiful cinematography, which is pretty typical of the Daniel Craig Bond flicks. Spectre, however, has some of the best cinematography out of all the Bond movies I've seen. The film employs a rugged look to fit its locales like Mexico and Rome as well as some shots that look like they were taken straight out of the great Sean Connery Bond films. Spectre is an entirely satisfying, thrilling, beautifully-shot spy film that should entertain most James Bond fans.

Army of Darkness -
I went in thinking that I wouldn't like this one as Evil Dead started off mostly serious then ventured into more comedy for the sequel. But I think Army of Darkness is the most fun and enjoyable movie of the three. It's horror comedy and feels like a big fantasy adventure or one of those Pirates of the Caribbean movies at times. With Army of Darkness you could almost skip the first two since once again there is a retelling of the first two movies with yet another actress playing the girlfriend character. And the end of Evil Dead 2 is changed a bit for the beginning of Army of Darkness.
Ash has a bunch of great lines and is funny and cool throughout the movie. This movie is where I think his character becomes iconic. Or at least popular enough to get action figures, comics, and other pop culture items. I'm going to watch it again one day. It might be something I buy down the line.
Now to watch the new TV show.
The Pyramid -
* Disclaimer - I like pretty blonde girls and Egyptian stuff. I might never go to Egypt again considering the situation there. It's been dangerous since I went years ago and it never seems to be perfectly or at least reasonably safe. I still have good memories of the country. Even though I thought I was cursed at one point! Anyway a movie about Egypt with deserts, pyramids, and exploration is a movie for me.
I can't remember if this movie was sold as found footage. But like maybe most of these movies or the ones I've seen, it gets dropped after a while for the sake of the movie. The Pyramid is not the best movie, it's not perfect. It could and should be better. Maybe they were rushed or just making it for a cash in with the found footage. I don't know. Many things about the Egyptian characters' backgrounds are historically wrong I think. I haven't studied it in years. But it has one of my favorite Egyptian characters in it and although the history is incorrect, I think they were chosen for the look over anything else. It's entertainment first and history second or of little concern. Which is a shame. As if you are going to go down a historical route it should be accurate.
The Pyramid is your basic explore a dark place and get lost story. However the pretty blonde girl gets a slasher type partial nudity underwear scene early on. Also there aren't any real unlikable characters which is cool. The odd thing is the blonde girl and her Father are both supposed to be experienced archaeologists and they are doctors. But how they get lost and what they do seems kind of silly. But this is a lost area type horror movie and one of those money talks situations I guess. Once the horror and exploration starts it seems to be influenced a bit or has some moments that reminded me of The Descent. Not enough to be a rip off but if you've seen or like The Descent you'll pick it up. Things happen, people get injured, traps, etc. I think the movie will have more effect on you if you like exploring or have explored pyramids and similar areas. It might not be the best movie but it doesn't have to be if you like the stuff I mentioned in my disclaimer.
How old are you if I may ask?
Kinda curious since this is the first time you saw those movies.
Does it matter? There are tons of horror and other movies that I missed. I just never got around to it, didn't know about them, or they weren't high up on the watch list. And there are other movies I watch too. I just don't review everything or post because it's not horror.

Unbroken (2014)
The non-fiction novel Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption is an incredibly riveting, moving biography of Olympian and prisoner-of-war Louis Zamperini that I believe is an important book to read. Naturally, a movie based on the book was inevitable; the film adaptation does do its subject justice, even if it's only sporadically compelling. Unbroken is a bio-pic about the life of Louie Zamperini in World War II, whose bomber plane was shot down, and he was forced to survive on a raft for 47 days. He was then captured by the Japanese and placed in various camps for over two years, where he was severely abused until he was rescued at the end of the war. There are a lot of great things about Unbroken: the spectacular cinematography, breakout performances from the entire cast, an explosive opening act and some genuinely moving scenes throughout the rest of the film. Angelina Jolie directs the film in a surprisingly graceful way. Despite some obviously unpleasant war scenes present in the film, Unbroken is a beautiful movie to look at. An opportunity that the film misses, however, is the effects of the war on Louie. His battle with alcoholism and PTSD is never mentioned in the film, and although it would have made the movie longer than it already is (137 minutes), there should have been an emphasis on those ideas. Even if it doesn't resonate as strongly as it should, Unbroken is compelling enough to do justice to its subject matter and a must-watch if yo're a fan of World War II movies.

It's like part one on steroids. The humour, the gore, everything is amped up, and considering how far the first one went, that's really saying something.
There was a thing or two about the movie that I thought was a little stale, or maybe I should say had been done before, and better, but as a super huge tribute to Bad Taste era Peter Jackson, it's a blast.
It's worth a watch, but I think getting too drunk to do so is always a solid option!

Amalthea inspired me to watch The Fourth Kind, so I did.
The Fourth Kind (2009)
It's always a bit fun when a found footage movie affirms to be real footage and sticks with that claim throughout the film. You get to play along with the filmmakers and hopefully get a satisfying horror flick out of it. Movies like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project did this well, but some movies are a bit too ardent about their authenticity and come off as silly. The Fourth Kind fits somewhere in the ladder category. In The Fourth Kind, the town of Nome, Alaska is plagued by mysterious disappearances, murders and suicides in the early 2000's. A psychologist, Abbey Taylor, head hypnosis sessions with various patients whose stories seem to have distinct similarities, and Abbey realizes that she might be tormented by the same thing that afflicts her patients. The film mostly mixes found footage with dramatized versions of the footage, sometimes showing the "real" and dramatized portions side-by-side. For the most part, it's just aggravating. You'll hear the same dialog from two different actors at the same time on occasion, which begs the question why they didn't either go all-in with the found footage. The found footage scenes are the most intense parts of the films. Not necessarily scary, but they are visceral enough to be memorable. The dramatized scenes are melodramatic and dull. Surprisingly, the movie would have been much better if it was completely found footage. The Fourth Kind has some effective stretches here and there, but it's mostly a half-baked affair.

Perfect summation for my feelings about it. It could have been pretty great but the filmmakers needed to figure what the hell kind of movie they wanted to make and stick to it. It was kind of all over the place at moments, but managed some eerie and effective atmosphere. Sadly, not enough of it.

"Actual footage" together with dramatisation was an interesting concept. Worked on some levels. Was expecting much more from the story, or something more daring. Instead I found it rather simple and formulaic. The "UFO crowd" would likely find it old and shallow. Horror fans today would likely find it old hat and cliche. Pacing and acting were fine.

Chernobyl Diaries (2012)
I wish I would have known that the screenplay was written by Shane Van Dyke, and if you don't know who that is, he directed a movie called Titanic II (yes, it's a real movie). Had I been aware of this unfortunate fact, I would have been spared of wasting 88 minutes on this laughably bad The Hills Have Eyes rip-off. In Chernobyl Diaries, six tourists hire a tour guide to take them into the abandoned city of Pripyat, where workers for the Chernobyl nuclear reactor used to live. After a few lame jump scares, the crew begins to suspect that the town isn't completely abandoned. Oren Peli came up with the story, and it's pretty obvious since there's not much action until the very end. This has never been much of a problem for me as long as the movie can conjure up a creepy atmosphere and some good suspense. What this movie does instead is try to scare the audience with a ton of fake jump scares and age-old cliches. It doesn't make for an entertaining movie when the characters keep making the same stupid mistakes every other movie character has made before. Watching a bunch of dimwits getting killed off in the dark is just predictable. However, the real atrocity here is the cinematography. For the first thirty minutes of the film, I was convinced this was a found footage flick because of how god damn shaky the camera was. It looked like this was filmed by a blender. Other than a decently interesting setting, Chernobyl Diaries is an embarrassingly awful movie that uses all the worst horror tropes.

The story had potential to be another 13 Sins, but sadly the pacing wasn't there.
With a nose job the lead actor could play Jamie Bell's double. Now you know.

Mainly lame. There were some mildly entertaining moments, but you figure out what the obvious twist has been pretty much at the beginning of the film. I wouldn't say it isn't worth watching for a horror fan, but it also isn't a film I plan on viewing again. =/

Dog Soldiers (2002)
8/10
Last night I saw this film for a second time. It was a bit better than I remembered. I appreciate films that know what they are and do that well... Dog Soldiers is one of those.
Good comparison film would be Aliens (1986): 'soldiers battling monsters, with authorities wanting the monsters for military'... except instead of aliens, it's werewolves. I thought the main characters in Aliens had more depth (and were both more likable & hateable), & Aliens had more interesting environments & subplot areas. I would've liked to know Pvt Cooper & Megan more... but again in this comparison, the characters were more a plot device for the action, whereas in Aliens one might argue the opposite. IMO, in the best films, characters change though their experience; not happening in Dog Soldiers.
Stake Land (2010)
5/10
A nicely shot precursor to The Walking Dead TV series (cept these are vampire-zombies). It's a bit too bleak & seemingly without much to say. Most film audiences want an enjoyable escape... or if not that, something educational... not much of either here.
Interview with the Vampire (1994)
6/10
Second time around, is much worse -- but I'm not faulting the film for that, as seeing the narrative for the first time is important (though I didn't remember much). I don't think there's much one would want to remember from this narrative, as I don't think much was learned... and otherwise, I found it a bit slow & plotting.
An Honest Liar (2014)
8/10
(Description - documentary, "World-renowned magician and escape artist James "the Amazing" Randi dedicates his life to exposing fake psychics and others who claim paranormal powers.") Well told story & style. What's not to like about exposing lies presented to make money?

Seriously, this movie is best watched with your eyes closed as both editing and camerawork is horrendous. The story sounds interesting on paper but is executed really badly. The movie is weird, all the characters are weird, the acting is weird. Poor Timothy Hutton. His throat must've been sore for weeks after all that overacting.

Secret in Their Eyes (2015)
Remaking the 2009 Best Foreign Film Oscar winner The Secret in Their Eyes seems somewhat unnecessary and even strange, but whether you wanted it or not, here's Secret in Their Eyes. In 2002, a tight-knit group of investigators is torn apart after one of their daughters is found brutally murdered in a dumpster. The mother vows revenge on her killer while the other FBI agents hunt for the murderer. Thirteen years later, one of them wants the case re-opened after he thinks he has found where the killer has been. The film often switches between 2002 and 2015, and the "past timeline" uses the September 11th attacks to present themes about criminality and prejudice in the country. The issue with the double setting, however, is that poor editing makes it difficult to distinguish which timeline we are watching at any given moment. You'll have to look for the grey in Chiwetel Ejiofor's beard or the length of Nicole Kidman's hair to determine if a particular scene takes place in 2002 or 2015. Despite this one persistent issue, Secret in Their Eyes is a beautifully shot, superbly acted and unpredictable crime thriller . Julia Roberts gives arguably her best performance that will unfortunately go unnoticed due to mixed reviews for this movie. She has some incredibly powerful scenes throughout the film, all of which are helped by great writing. Secret in Their Eyes might be an unnecessary remake, but it's all-star cast and moody atmosphere should make up for that.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
***Contains spoilers for the previous films in the franchise***
Since the first novel was released in 2008, The Hunger Games series has become one of the biggest YA franchises on the market, and it's been probably the only series to legitimately rival the Harry Potter franchise in sheer popularity. Although The Maze Runner and Divergent have enjoyed enough success to spawn their own film adaptations, neither have been nearly as lucrative as The Hunger Games. The franchise's complicated and timely hero as well as its biting political subtext has attracted many people to the series, and seven years, later the final film has been released to close the series. To get ready for it, I decided to watch the penultimate chapter, Mockingjay: Part 1. After destroying the arena at the 75th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss is brought to the underground District 13 in order to assume her identity as the Mockingjay, a symbol of hope and rebellion for the people of Panem. However, Katniss's hope begins to burn out when she realizes that Peeta was captured by the Capitol and is being brainwashed to convince the people to stop the rebellion. Even as a fan of the series, splitting the final book into two parts felt less like a narrative enhancement and more like an attempt to make more money. Some scenes seemed to drag on too long or be completely unnecessary. The book could easily be adapted into an epic three-hour conclusion and still be effective. There was also much less action than the previous films. However, the action scenes that were present are as poignant and exciting as ever. The series' strengths have always outweighed its issues, and Mockingjay: Part 1 is no exception. Jennifer Lawrence is still mesmerizing in her portrayal of Katniss, and the social commentary is just as timely and striking as it is in the other films. It may feel like too much exposition for the conclusion, but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 is a grim and exciting set-up for a hopefully action-packed finale.

Ending of the series. Yes because of the poor quality movie. But it didn't end if you watched the end credits and caught many of the left out story bits. And great? Do you like T1 and T2? Because if you do, I don't see how you can see this movie as a 10/10.

To each their own but I've never seen them give anything under a 7/10 if that says anything.

It was a lot of fun! Doesn't try to be hip and pays much respect to the original cartoon strip. Stick around for the closing credits and see how many classic Peanuts panels you recognize. I reccomend this one, Hammer.

Ah. I just know Terminator 1 and 2 are perfect sci-fi horror movies. All the others just show the difference in talent between James Cameron and the other directors. Terminator Genesis felt like a fan film during some of the opening scenes with odd choices of what to keep and leave out for those homage scenes. I could go on but I didn't want to break the whole movie down and write paragraphs on why the movie isn't good.
It just amazes me when people give some movie sequels a 10/10 and I think they are far from it when you have the far superior originals to compare to. I'm talking movies like Star Wars, Terminator, Alien, and Predator even though I like Predator 2.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015)
The Hunger Games series has finally come to an end with the fourth and final film in the franchise and serves as a continuation of Mockingjay - Part 1. Part 2 makes up for Part 1's lack of action by being the darkest, most violent and gritties Hunger Games film, even with the standards set by the previous films and succeeds in ending the saga in a suitably epic fashion. Mockingjay - Part 2 finds Katniss leading the rebels to the Capitol aiming to kill President Snow. The Gamemakers have rigged the entire city with lethal traps to make sport of their deaths, making it the most dangerous Hunger Games yet. If Part 1 was too slow or lacked adequate action, Part 2 is heart-pounding from beginning to end. The action scenes are more violent than anything seen in the series yet, making any deaths even more gut-wrenching. Fans of the series will find it hard to watch at times, and if you're like me, you'll be gripping your seat or hiding behind your shirt for a good portion of the film. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 ends one of the most exciting and relevant franchises today in a gripping, emotional and brutal way, and it might be the feel-bad movie of the year.

A film maker makes a film for a beautiful girl.
It's a simple film. The film carries well with an endearing performance by the lead David Long. It's nicely shot, paced and acted.
Best description is probably a drama horror thriller. It's dark, has some gore & twistedness, but counterbalanced by the firm sweet, normal, moral base of the heroine Kristi Ray.
Practically, I'm not sure if it's enough of any one thing to satisfy most film genre lovers. The psychological exposition of the film maker is shallow, where I expected the film to center. It's not tremendously suspenseful or scary, and not much gore. And lastly, I thought the climax was a bit underwhelming -- a bit too tame, short and unimaginative.

These should be the bad ones:

-Krampus: The Reckoning (2015) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4820312/)

This is the one we're looking forward to:
Krampus (2015) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3850590/)
And Kevin Smith is supposed to do another one at some point.
At first it was called Here Comes The Krampus but because of the other one(s) it's retitled to Anti Claus.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
I suppose I should start calling this "Confessions of a Star Wars Virgin"... Anyway, I've finally come to the much-maligned prequel series and a movie that gets considerable hate, The Phantom Menace. Maybe because I don't esteem the Star Wars film as the greatest films of all time, or maybe I just have lower standards than most, but I found The Phantom Menace to be the most fun Star Wars movie yet. Yes, there are enormous flaws with Episode I, but like every other film in the series, the good moments don't just excuse the bad; they topple them. The Phantom Menace follows Jedi Knight Qui-God Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi as they escort Queen Amidala on her travels to the planet Coruscant, hoping to find a peaceful end to an interplanetary trade dispute. They also encounter Anakin Skywalker, before he became a Jedi, who appears to have unusually strong powers of the Force. I was definitely surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie based on how much hate it has received. Being the first movie in a trilogy, The Phantom Menace is going to feature a lot of exposition and many seemingly stock characters. I would hope many of the plotlines and character arcs are continued in the next couple of movies because, but I have to at least give it the benefit of the doubt for now. The movie's good moments made me completely forget many of the bad ones that came before it. The pod race in particular was stunning as well as the final fight with Darth Maul; showing the Jedi in their prime made the lightsaber fights more fast-paced and exciting. Even though I enjoyed the movie, I can completely understand the hatred it has accumulated over the years. If I was a big fan of the original series, and I had to wait sixteen years for this, I would be pretty disappointed as well. Maybe being a Star Wars virgin allowed me to enjoy Episode I more than I should have, but, at least for me, The Phantom Menace was the most visually impressive and maybe even the most fun Star Wars movie yet by continuing to showcase the series' creativity and imagination.

Almost shocking. But watch the Red Letter Media reviews about the prequels on youtube or their site after you see Episode II and III. I'll be honest and say I didn't hate Episode I when I first watched it. The final lightsaber fight is good. But if you are a fan of the originals, Episode I is just the start of the prequel problems and it only gets worse with the other two. The prequels and all the related material that is considered official are best forgotten. The thrown away material like the comics and some books are actually better than what is considered official at times because George Lucas wasn't tinkering around with those to match what was going on in those bad prequels.
I'm very curious to see how the new Star Wars goes since they seem to be erasing the future books which were also good. Aside from Luke, I really don't want to see an old Han and Leia. We all know how the last Indiana Jones movie was. And Carrie Fisher seems to be getting a lot of attention as Leia for the wrong reasons. Or reasons that social online groups seem to come out of the woodwork about.
