Nah, this one wasn't that interesting.
But i predict Tye Sheridan will become one of the bigger actors of his generation. I guess it depends how he looks in about 5 years. Hard to say. He could end up looking like Tom Hardy. He could end up fugly. But right now he's got his acting skills and his movie choices working for him. Good luck, boy.

POPCORN 1991
A group of students and their professor stage an all night horror movie marathon in a rundown theatre slated for demolition. One of the students has suffered from nightmares most of her life and this is the night she finds out why....
I loved lots of things about this movie but mainly the fact that Dee Wallace Stone was in it (albeit a small part) and that the actual marathon looked like a blast!

I think i started watching this once before but wasn't really paying attention and decided i didnt like it. Decided to give it another shot and i found that it was actually pretty good. The characters were fleshed out really well and i loved the villain. The girls made some dumb decisions though. Sometimes i think filmmakers think that they only way they can justify a "hero" character dying is to have them do something really stupid and practically cause their own death instead of just having the villain be smarter and more cunning. Besides that though, i enjoyed it.

I watched Frankenstein's Army recently, fun movie, my expectations were pretty low though, so that probably made it seem better than it deserved. They really, really should have ditched the found footage angle of the movie, that would have helped it immeasurably. I generally don't object to the found footage framing device unlike many other people, but there has to be a reason why the story should be told in that format. Frankenstein's Army does not justify it's found footage perspective at all, in fact it undermines it. Anyone who knows anything about film in that era knows that the Russians didn't have color film at that point in time, nor did anyone have cameras with built in microphones, now did any cameras shoot in a 1.77 aspect ratio, nor would the film have had that fine of a image in terms of grain, nor would that much film would have been easy to lug around, nor would the shutters or film sensitivity back then would have allowed them to film in dimly lit areas, and so on and so on. For me, it doesn't hurt the movie too much, as this is a silly film, and it is chiefly about the monsters and bloody carnage, and in that department it delivers. There are a lot of great and inventive monsters in this movie. It felt like the later stages of a Wolfenstein game. For me, that's a good thing, but I could see why others would want more. I don't care that the story and characters are thin because I expected that going in. In the end, for me it's a good movie that could have been better, but at least it had its priorities straight.

NOTL Sam, I watched Sound Studio a well but for some reason didn't mind it in a Fulci's the Beyond type of ambiguous ending. I have a weakness for the visuals od a film. This one hit me with the visuals and combined it with interesting sound. In fact I like the depth od shadow as well as the brown tones in the film. For some reason I can set aside a somewhat "less than" script in favor of visual appeal.
Anyone see Reverb? I heard it may be in the same vein?

SPLIT SECOND 1992
Rutger Hauer stars in a futuristic (2008!) London besieged with flooding caused by global warming. He's a cop with a mission tracking a homicidal creature responsible for the death of his partner. Its full of over used themes, lot's of over acting which I think is intentional, but not a bad way to pass the time.

"Proxy" 4/10
Slow ass movie. I mean insultingly slow. Not only did the story move on at snail pace but also the camera work from time to time had me believe the movie had paused itself. That's....bad.
Well, the good thing i can say about Proxy is you have no idea who the main character is and where this movie is going. In fact, you keep wondering wtf is going on untill the credits starts to roll. Also, the acting is quite good.
"Death Clique" 7/10
I went into this movie knowing nothing about it, which was a really good thing. Coz already at the 34 minute mark my jaw hit the floor hard. Harder than in Proxy. I also thought it was a good story that was told really well, except for the timeline. The turn of events just happened unbelievably fast. The movie was aslo very well acted, especially by the 3 girls.
"Hateship Loveship" 4/10
Not even a great cast could save this odd but dull love story.
"Death Do Us Part" 1/10
Pure garbage. The kind of slasher you've seen better a 100 times before. Nothing new, nothing interesting. Annoying characters, bad dialogue and the acting wasn't much better for the most part. Only positive thing I can say is the right person survived.
"Here Comes the Devil" 7/10
The title makes it sound like a comedy. It certainly isn't. Probably just bad translation of the Mexican title"
Started out nicely with a hot sex scene (why I have no idea) followed by brutality, followed by another hot sex scene. For the next 60 minutes the movie just got better and better and could really have been great if it hadn't been for the last 20-30 minutes and a really disappointing ending. Another thing that bothered me was the horrible police work after the childrens reappearance. Nobody bothered to investigate that cave even tho it was
obvious something traumatising had happened there. Stupid.
"Perfect Sisters" 2-3/10
A not very interesting story told even less interesting with 2 very uninteresting lead characters. Also, the whole thing is made as a teen movie with lots of cringeworthy moments even tho the subject is quite heavy. The acting isn't very convincing either except from James Russo. No I don't think the millions of fans of Twilight and The Hunger Games will like this one. Why would they??
If the story had begun where this movie ended it would have been a completely different story. Maybe even a good one.

Dark Skies -
One word review: Predictable.
SLIGHT SPOILERS!!!
I watched some of the trailer to this movie around its release and thought it was going to be a good one. Turns out it's standard stuff. Basically two ideas or themes put together. First, the family sees strange things in the house. Of course they don't really take it seriously enough at first. I mean, if I saw stuff all over the floor and strange markings, I would stay up for the next few nights to see if it happens again. Second, pretty much every one of the mysteries from the X-Files. I thought I would see Mulder and Scully turn up. But we get a guy, with the usual strong performance by J. K. Simmons, who understands that the fight is basically over. Of course there is the obvious twist as well. The movie leaves no strange or freaky feeling. Maybe there is a shot or two of the creature/monster that will get you. But nothing really unsettling. Which this should be. Even though, to be honest this sort of thing, at least from a physical standpoint doesn't scare me that much.

"Tokarev" 6/10
Roderick Usher's newest movie starring Nicholas Cage.
Compared to Liam Neeson in "Taken" Cage was much more brutal an less likable, but the story just wasn't as exciting and of all possible outcomes the ending was probably the worst they could've come up with.
Also, if you want to see a good Nicholas Cage performance go watch "Joe".
But good luck with it, Sean.

This story was actually pretty good and it had a (at least I thought) very interesting main character in Robbie and i really thought newcomer Jake Croker added a lot of depth to his character (tho i might be the only one who think so. lol). Too bad the ending was weak as hell.

Halloween 2 (Remake) -
MAJOR SPOILERS!!!
I'm going to start believing more horror reviews. Most said this one is bad. I still wanted to see it just to see it. But there is no point in seeing this movie. It's worse than the first remake. A movie I can't remember. And it's worse than the original Halloween 2. The movie is dark, violent, and extremely brutal just to be brutal.
This movie starts by once again breaking what I believe are rules. First, more young Michael Myers back story to humanize him I guess and add to a twist ending. The guy is more crazed serial killer than anything in this movie. And second, which is bad for any movie. For the first 30 minutes we are watching a dream sequence. It's the hospital segment from the original movie. There is nothing in the look of the movie that says this is a dream either. When it turned out to be a dream I was pissed and tempted to stop the movie there. I guess Zombie thought that since Carpenter didn't like Halloween 2, why not be clever and trick the audience or something. It's stupid.
After that the movie really starts. And it's not like it gets better either after the dream sequence. I think this movie is like the Friday the 13th remake in that Zombie combined a lot of Halloween movies. There are scenes that seem to be from Halloween 4 or 5 here. I can't remember. A party sequence, the twist with a family member, and a few others. There are also mirrored scenes from Halloween 2. But they are different just to be different. For example, in Halloween 2 (original) there is the hot tub nurse death. Myers dips the nurse multiple times in the tub drowning and burning her face. And we get that 80s gratuitous shot of her perfect boobs. In the remake, there is a nude stripper who has her face brutally slammed into glass. The shot is flipped. It's really vicious. And it's missing that gratuitous shot.
These characters aren't the characters of the original movies either. So why even bother? Why not create your own horror movie with a brother / sister conflict or whatever they want to call this mess. They changed the Loomis character into a book / media money grabber. The only actress that does a good job is Danielle Harris. At least she's the only character I cared about. I think Zombie knew it too that's why her death is basically off screen with quick cuts and sound effects. But we do see the sad result. People complain about Jason teleporting in the later Friday the 13th movies, but here Myers literally beats cars across town. And does it just for the story. He's at the same party with Laurie but leaves to go kill Danielle Harris' character for some reason.
It's all very bad and pointless. It makes the original Halloween 2 look good. And that movie pales compared to the original Halloween. Anyone who hasn't seen this remake should avoid it at all costs.

Absolute sucker for such films. Slow-burn, yes. Depp, yes. Polanski, yes. Mystery/suspense, yes.
And Emmanuelle Seigner's boobs.
* * * ½
For fans, it's kinda sad that after this one Polanski hasn't done any this kind of mystery/thriller so far. Depp was good in this and I think he can quite fit more into Polanski's world of eerie psychological horror & suspense. Aside from his frequent teaming up with Gore Verbinski & Tim Burton, I guess Polanski is another director who can nicely utilize Depp's potential as a character actor.

This movie didn't make any sense. Either the filmmakers couldn't decide what movie they wanted to make or they don't understand the basic rules of storytelling. The acting was terrible even from Tobin Bell who just seemed bored and the hook of the movie had barely anything to do with it.

It’s a great horror slasher film: the body count is ample, the deaths are gruesome, the nudity is decent, & the girls are cute. The story is horrendous – but excusable – in lieu of the movie’s strengths.
As a re-make of the 1980 classic, it stinks. It's really a sequel - not a re-make - as it picks up at the end of the first movie with Jason's mother getting killed and proceeds from there.
The story is baffling even for a slasher flick (the ending especially) but it's more of a let-down in the FT13 franchise.

There's something charming about vampiric comedies (remember Polanksi's fantastic 60s film?). Unfortunately, none of that exist in these films.
The female lead provides plenty of eye candy, and some of the gags work. If you love girly films, take a chance. Otherwise avoid.

The overall plot line seems like underdeveloped or needed more reviews or re-writes before even they should started the shooting. I think I've already seen all the major & cool CGI treated action sequences in the trailers, so there were nothing actually more left in that area while I was watching it in the theater yesterday. Totally agree!! Spent around $5 to see it on the theater (as there was nothing 'better' to see) & totally wasted! It won't be too much exaggerating to say I almost grew watching the original over & over again in VHS & TV and surely become one of my favorite all time sci-fi action flicks. So it's really painful to watch when they give this sort of lame treatment just to made some money. There isn't a 'Robocop' actually in this version, IMO...the outlook was just so lame, where we're still fond of the design of original & true Robocop. This time to some extent, this 'Robocop' didn't even look like "Part man - Part Machine" at all! Moreover, how they could ignored that gory & so emotionally moving "shootout/death scene" of Alex Murphy?!? Here they just blow his car right in front of him!?! How f**king lame!!::mad::
And lastly...no catchy lines from the Robocop!...only one they used from the original and that was also poorly placed or untimely, didn't match fit with the scene.

I'm glad that I finally saw this; The director directed my favorite short out of both VHS movies, "Sanctuary;" it was really cool to see his first film. I had a friend recommend this to me as being "one of the best recent horror movies that they have seen in a LONG time"... and... eh... I mean, it wasn't bad, it just didn't knock my socks off like I expected it to with that praise. I think that if you enjoy The Walking Dead, you'd enjoy this as it has more to do with the humdrum of surviving the zombie apocalypse. Honestly, though, I couldn't stand one of the characters (though Jeremy Gardner was fantastic and totally steals the show)... The soundtrack was also killer and I constantly have the song overplaying the trailer stuck in my head...

I don't think i've ever heard of his horror movie before, which is very weird. It has a great cast, a great horror story and the same kind of dialogue as in "Deep Blue Sea. It's easy to tell Mindhunters is made by the same guy who made Deep Blue Sea. You have no idea who will surviver. Or who the killer is for that matter. My only complaint is that the last 10 minutes could've been better.
So if you liked Deep Blue Sea and The Collector see this one. It's on Netflix.

A interesting story horribly executed. It's obvious there was only room in the budget for scary sounds. Everytime something visually scary happened the unfocused shaky hand-held camera came into play. Of course. I give this garbage 2 out of 10 only because the acting was surprisingly good.
Note to filmmakers: If you don't have the budget to make a decent horror movie don't make a bad one instead. Just don't make it.

A film to put one in the pensive mood. It's meandering structure of "a-week-in-the-life" is no thrill ride, but the way it finds humour in bleakness and shows the functioning disfunction of a small town is certainly interesting to watch.

Love blasting witches with shotguns and watch them fly backwards, eh?
I do it all the time. ::wink::
I have really enjoyed this series myself, at least 1-3 (4 was terrible). Honestly, I think Paranormal Activity was one of the best horror films of the previous decade and one of the scariest films I ever watched. To me, the first one's subtly is what scared me more than anything. Excellent development of suspense as well. I heard many people say that The Marked Ones was really good. I recently found it at a pawn shop for $3, so I plan to watch it soon.
I agree; The fourth episode was really horrible and the sequel was a bit of a snoozefest but I do believe that the first movie is truly scary. Not to mention, I think it's infinitely clever the tricks that they employ for special effects. I'd love to hear what you think of The Marked Ones.

I really love Rushmore. I'm a huge Wes Anderson and Rushmore is definitely in my top three or so - I think I'd rank them as such:
1. Darjeeling Limited
2. Tennenbaums
3. Rushmore
4. Grand Budapest Hotel
5. Life Aquatic
6. Bottle Rocket
7. Fantastic Mr. Fox
8. Moonrise Kingdom
If you liked Rushmore, you'd probably like Bottle Rocket; those movies are not as stylized as his later work (some people object to his later style but I really love it).
My mistake, I did see some of his movies.
Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom. Liked them both.
I don't mind the style. As long as the story's good.
Up next is The Royal Tenenbaums.

I absolutely love Chushingura. It's one of my most favorite portrayal of all folklore tales of all time. That's why, despite Keanu's presence, I was compelled to watch the film based on it.
While I came back impressed with the storytelling, complete with eye-catching cinematography, wonderful direction and some fantastic CGI, the sore dot across the entire film's frames was...you guessed it, Keanu. There's code, customs, tradition, samurais, bushido, ronin, magic, witches, spells, katana-clashing fights, explosions, attacks, everything you can think of in a folklore-rendered mass entertainer, and the entire Japanese cast impresses with their solid performances.
Wish they had made it with someone like Stephen Chow. The film would have been much more impactful. As it is, it's still a pretty decent entertainer. It's almost faithful to the original Chūshingura storylines, although the added fantasy elements take much of the sheen away from the original Japanese story. For the purists, you are better off hunting down the Toho classic from the 60s, which has the indomitable Toshiro Mifune in it.
Make sure you watch it on a big screen with surround sound, if and when you do.

Satan Hates You (2010): 7/10 (first viewing)
It was an entertaining parody of the Christian propaganda films of the 1970s. The plot was a little thin, the characters weren't bad, though I did not really connect with them. It was also a bit cheesy with all the satanic costumes. It was not clear exactly where the movie was going though. One area that the film deserves credit is in the casting department. The film included Michael Berryman, Angus Scrimm, and Debbie Rochon, so it was worth it just for their cameos. Overall, I was entertained, but it's definitely no masterpiece.

Spoiler Free Summary
A very powerful, if poorly scripted, first act unfortunately leads into a film which is visually stunning but poorly paced, tonally mismatched and filled with dull characters. Ultimately, Godzilla is once again appropriated by a culture which just doesn't have the deep rooted emotional link to the figure.

Full Review Complete with Spoilerific Fun
From the moment the opening titles started rolling I was excited. Much like 1998's offering, we are treated to archive footage of nuclear testing. Whilst the concept is perhaps cliché, it is deployed well with a distinctly menacing vibe and just enough of the big man to keep us interested. I particularly like the notion that Godzilla was alive and well BEFORE the tests, as opposed to being created by them - a nice little twist. Things get even more interesting as we fast-forward to 1999 when an enormous skeleton is found underground and a character asks "is it him?" Clearly he's not unknown to man.
The rest of the 1999 stuff escalates quickly. In their short time on screen together, Cranston and Binoche work through pretty poor dialogue to create a believable on-screen couple. Very shortly after as tragedy strikes and I really did feel it emotionally, becoming aware of my horrified facial expression long after I evidently started pulling it. I can certainly imagine there will be tears for some. There are quite a few genuinely interesting enigma codes raised in this first, very well executed sequence and stunning performances.
Another jump forward and we're in the present day. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, playing Cranston and Binoche's now adult son, is in the military and has a nice little family unit of his own. Returning from a 14 month tour, we're given some really quite appalling dialogue as he reunited with his wife and son - as characters promise to always be there for each other, to stay safe and say things like "it's not the end of the world", I almost wondered if I was supposed to laugh...sadly, I don't think I was. Still, Cranston's return as the now manic Joe 15 years on kicks the film back into shape as we move into a very eerie set-piece in the derelict Power-Plant town from before. The act concludes quite satisfyingly with scenes of monstrous destruction and death - namely, that of Cranston's Joe. This is perhaps the first big mistake of the film, as Cranston's show-stealing performances and interesting character development would certainly have made the next 90 minutes far more interesting. Whilst his death offers some vague guidance to Ford (A T-J) to protect his family, such a cliché really isn't necessary. Are we to believe he WOULDN'T have done everything he could for them had his Dad not told him to? Rather, I feel it would have been far more interesting to witness Joe's descent into determined, revenge seeking mania in opposition to Watanabe's more reserved "let nature do it's thing" approach. Instead, we're left with Ford - the textbook devoted protagonist, empty of character but full of "goodness."
Now let's talk Godzilla himself. Edward's is clearly taking a leaf out of the Jaws book of making monster-movies - less is more. Tease the audience with mentions, glimpses, noises leading up to a big pay-off in the final act. In theory this should work, and it does at first. Godzilla's first appearance is short but sweet, featuring just enough to whet the appetite. However, the effect soon wears off and becomes nothing but frustrating when the same formula of appear-roar-start to fight is rehashed a few more times. Matters are not helped by the sheer amount of times we see the MUTOs - those things tear apart multiple locations (in particular, anywhere this one family happens to be). They're continual reappearances make Godzilla's absence all the more conspicuous as it becomes "MUTOs featuring Godzilla".
As for his characterisation...I was torn. Godzilla was born as a symbol of Japanese Post-War Nuclear fears. An unstoppable, ferocious beast who killed all in it's past - good or evil. Whilst yes, he later became less villainised in the many sequels, that was his role. This film establishes things as much more of a confrontation of Man and Nature, however it doesn't know who is who. Whilst Watanabe's speeches seem to suggests the monsters are nature and man is just a powerless, tiny figure, the emphasis on the MUTOs nuclear power seems to align them much more with the "man-made destruction." But then, as the humans guide and allow Godzilla to fight (rather than try to destroy him) it is as though Godzilla is more on the side of man...then he's referred to as a balance bringer. So is is Man versus the Nature MUTOs with Godzilla as the referee? Doesn't seem like much of a balance-restorer for him to just kill one side and let the other (man) survive. Essentially the films message is convoluted.
Godzilla's heroic status also missed the mark for me. Whilst he does dish out a little collateral damage, it is VERY limited in comparison with the MUTOs. Rather than voice a message about the cost of using one huge destructive power to fight another (which would have been a nice allegory for the West's moral dillemas regarding war), Godzilla is a very controlled force - hell, he's hailed as a hero and set free at the end! As the film progresses and he repeatedly shows up to dispose of the MUTO menace, he quickly transcends from terrifying force of nature to Oversized Club Bouncer dealing with a couple of rowdy customers. An audience's reaction to Godzilla should not be uncomplicated relief that he's going to get rid of the mean guys, it should be a complex mixture of excitement and fear - excitement for the spectacle, fear for the human cost. The Golden Gate Bridge sequence offers this to an extent, however I feel the death of the Brody son would have served a much greater purpose in emphasising the cost of using destructive forces.
Besides the nature message of this film, we have the aforementioned "family" one, that which Cranston bestows just before his death. "Protect family at all costs." Whilst very noble, the film then goes on to have Joe make a very roundabout journey to San Francisco, stopping off to fight monsters and risk killing himself (thus rendering him unable to help his family) and make Halo jumps (are bomb guys qualified for that?) along the way. No messages of "head as far east as you can" to his wife or "fuck the army, I'm going to be with my kid." Whilst one could argue that he was killing the monsters to "protect his family", quite frankly the risks involved (he doesn't know he's the protagonist) make that a pretty stupid way to protect them. On this note, I feel the film missed a big opportunity to raise an important ethical dilemma here. As the MUTOs mate and lay eggs which Brody must then destroy, rather than include a poignant moment of reflection whereupon he realises the MUTOs are doing just what his father said he should do, Brody torches the eggs and shows no remorse. Then, as the parents attempt revenge we are supposed to cheer for Godzilla.
Besides these important thematic negatives, I felt the film suffered from lazy writing; a bad case of "right time at the right place" throughout to always put our protagonist in the centre, flat characters I simply did not care about, underuse of Watanabe and an ending so filled with Deus Ex Machina I was laughing.
This is not to say there weren't positives. The effects are fantastic - I thought the monster design of Godzilla was incredible, considering it really is not easy to stay true to the original concept whilst making it visually believable and unlaughable. Whilst the MUTOs were a little generic and untextured, they had enough going on that I was interested. The action set-pieces really were gorgeous too; monster fights in a fire-lit Honolulu, then the storm cloud filled San Fran as well as scenes in the forest and at the plant. They didn't make it easy for the CGI team with the lighting choices, but they pull it out of the bag for sure.
All in all, I was disappointed. A promising start leads into a mindless Godzilla-lite Godzilla movie with confused morals and dull characters. Perhaps if there was more alignment between script and visuals it would have worked better; the cheesy clichéd lines just don't fit the dark, broody film, and a few scenes of poorly placed comic-relief really complicate things. You can feel the good intentions and nice ideas coming through, but ultimately it just...doesn't quite work. Missed opportunities aplenty.

After Ferret's dissection, there's not much left for me to say. But it isn't as bad as he has reported in his starting lines. True, it may not possess the frenetic speed in the first half itself as some of the superfast summer blockbusters we have seen before, and so might not appeal to the impatient audiences of today, but there's plenty of classic, good old mega-monster vs mega-monster fun, a storyline which keeps things coherent, remarkable CGI, and plenty of jaw-dropping moments.
The makers ensure that the film stays faithful to the original franchise, while giving their own twists on a few things - the origin, the mating, the human vs destructive force, etc. I would go to the extent to say that subtlety is the biggest strength of the film, and since it's all about the monster(s), it does not disappoint in that regard, specially in the final third of the film. While it won't be hailed as a masterpiece anytime soon, this film is a worthy addition to the franchise's ranks, which is quite an achievement in itself.
Go and watch it. You won't be disappointed.

But most important of all, it's not starring Matthew Broderick. Wonderful.
And doesn't have Emmerich behind the camera to butcher it as he wished.
I must really laud Gareth Edwards here for his directorial skills involving the monster sequences. He needs a bit more polishing on character development though.

My issue is not so much the deliberate pacing or slow reveal, but the way in which each fight scene goes a little too far to THEN take it away from us until the end. To use an analogy; imagine someone has a burger that they're going to give to you. The "Jaws" approach is for that person to keep describing the burger, occasionally show you glimpses of the burger and let you smell the burger before eventually giving you the burger in a big huge payoff. Godzilla 2014, however, puts the burger into your hands several times before yanking it back out. One is clever anticipation building, the other quickly grows frustrating.

Just saw Godzilla in 3D. My thinking is this is a big summer horror/sci-fi blockbuster like it's predecessor, but much better. If you go in what that expectation, and not anticipating an Oscar-contender, you will in fact be pleasantly surprised! It succeeds where it needs to, which for me is doing a good job with Godzilla and the baddies. The male lead is very dull and flat but IMO you don't go to see this movie for dialogue, character development, etc.: this is not supposed to be "The King's Speech."

Godzilla (2014): 8.5/10
*Possible Spoilers*
I went and saw this movie in 3-D at the theaters on Friday. I really enjoyed it. I debated giving it an 8.5 or 9, but I will stick to my former rating. The film was an interesting take on the Godzilla story. It was interesting that they twisted the atomic bomb line and established that those did not create Godzilla, but that he existed long before mankind. Further, it was interesting to see Godzilla as a positive force that restores balance. This is reminiscent of some of the versus films of the 1960s and 1970s. Also, there was some excellent special effects. The monsters and cities in the film looked incredibly realistic. The destruction of the cities was incredible. Overall, I really enjoyed it, but I had some criticisms. The biggest one was character development. While the Godzilla films have always been more focused on monsters, not characters, I still consider character development an important aspect of conventional film narrative. Second, the film did not show Godzilla enough. One may point out films like Jaws, but my response to that is that people go to see a Godzilla movie to see Godzilla. So, he should be shown more than he was. This did not figure large, but it was one criticism I had. Though that might be counteracted by the fact they restored his fire breath, which was awesome. Third, which is not really a criticism of the film itself, but the 3-D. I thought it was pretty terrible, which is unfortunate because it could have been great for film like this. Godzilla (2014) was definitely a solid film, even if it was not masterpiece. If you have not seen it, I definitely recommend it.

I don't think films do near enough with 3-D. It's becoming a rip-off. There are rarely any effects specially catered to that medium, ala Friday the 13th 3-D, that make it worth spending the extra money. Sad really.

It's not that I want on-screen antics, it's that they offer TOO much before taking it away, and the rinse-and-repeat of this technique grows tiresome. And the sheer amount of MUTO action we're given means it's not an exercise in subtlety - it's a very action packed film. That's what makes Godzilla's absence irritating - not a personal desire to have constant spectacle, but the imbalance.

I saw Godzilla at the IMAX theatre in 3D yesterday. Excellent and appropriate venue for the film. It cost $15! Most I've ever paid for a film, but I don't go to the theatre all that often anymore, nor the IMAX. So it's a special treat.
The film was solid, and the visuals and immersion was top notch.
It stayed true to Gojira/Godzilla orthodoxy, had a traditional Godzilla storyline, and at the same time manage to take a fresh perspective on the King of the Monsters.
I won't go into any spoilers at this point. Yes, there's some small details of the story I would "correct", but overall, it was a Godzilla movie experience. Like many modern "action" films, it lacked some character development particularly with the son/soldier, and as a result, lacked some heart. Also, it lacked a bit of the Japanese Kiaju spirit -- that is giving the kaiju's a fantasy film spirit and mythos.
Rating out of 10: 7/10

Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2011
5/10
I must admit upfront, I'm not a fan of pet sized CG apes/monkeys. They are so difficult to do because the more human they are like the more OFF they are. So that will always be a thorn in my paw while watching CG attempts.
I thought it was just watchable. To me, it was contrived and lacked heart. I like most all of Franco's acting work, but I didn't really care about any character in this film. It was interesting to have Bonzo infect the other apes to make them smart, and lead them out... but there's where they drop the ball. If that had occurred at least at the 1/2 mark, it could have been part of the story -- the lot of the apes, the ramifications of personhood in the apes, what to do with them, the Exodus, the interaction with human society, the ape colony interaction -- so many interesting avenues. Instead, the smart apes break out and make for the woods, which makes sense, but why they were so quickly discovered and stopped by police on a bridge... it was really pointless (that is, the only reason was to make a battle sequence).
I think Conquest of the Planet of the Apes 1971 was a much more interesting and engaging film. I'll never forget the ape opening the Bible to Caesar for his name. I didn't mind the obvious allegories because the characters and story was so engaging.

Just saw it on the theater (Premier) couple of hours back and will try hard to see it again on this weekend when it release 'officially' here.
**SPOILER ALERT**
After reading the HDC reviews, I'd like to agree with you all..and yes, even with FC to some extent. I'm not giving here another super-clinical review like FC delivered but yeah, he actually made some pretty valid points i.e. "MUTOs featuring Godzilla" & Jaws-Burger theory. The story did indeed centered more around on the MUTO monsters than the big G and though it deliberately tried to follow JAWS steps regarding building the anticipation & but as a whole couldn't able to become as masterclass of modern celluloid art like the way JAWS succeed & become such classic. They were excessively too conscious about showing off the King. And needless to say, the weak character development with a wrong choice of lead as well as on lead. It was frustrating to see Bryan Cranston's character's such early departure from the story, agree with FC..he should have take the lead on confronting the monsters or they should have give that lead to a more mature young actor as A.T-Johnson looked totally blunt throughout the film. Totally agree with metternich & Michael about the "3D" thing...yeah, CGI was top notch but it was kinda failed to provide any sort of "3D feel" at most of the part.
BUT...after of this drawbacks, still I can't say I didn't enjoy Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA. Probably my love for this monster & huge anticipation about this movie were the reasons but I must admit it did satisfied me on many level. Though at times looked kinda mechanical but MUTOs are now amazing new additions to the franchise, looking forward to see them more in coming sequels along side with other legendary friends & foes of Godzilla. And about Godzilla...all I can say is...HAIL TO THE KING! Loved & cherished each & every moment he appeared on the screen & even in the 'TV' news broadcasting sequence! Though GE's JAWS-theory of showing less & building the anticipation for the final pay-off at the end weren't up to the mark but still it kinda worked 'finely' overall & glad he at least put an effort for it which is appreciating from a new filmmaker these days. I'll definitely won't mind to spend excessively higher ticket price for Godzilla again to see more of his actions (with freaking astonishing atomic Breath!) in whatever the sequels they're going to make in the future.
Perhaps as I was so desperately waiting for a Godzilla movie & my excitement to see him once again after all these years was so on the top of my expectation level that I'm now happily ready to forgive & overlook all those negative aspects of this movie. So at the end, it was indeed a visually stunning & satisfying experience for me as a Godzilla fan.

Monsters (2010)
I was glad to see this added to Netflix streaming so I could watch it before seeing Godzilla, hopefully to get a sense of what Gareth Edwards is capable of. Pretty amazing effects and environments for such a low budget film, and the sense of danger throughout was unnerving. It's really more of a drama/romance than a horror movie, however -- not a terribly complex story arc, and not necessary original from that perspective, but the characters were likable and engaging, and I was rooting for them to fall for each other. I could probably complain that there wasn't enough monster action, but I'm not that big a fan of monster action movies anyway, so I'm not going to do that. If that's your expectation, however, you could be disappointed.

"The Quiet Ones" (2014) 6/10
An ol' school Hammer production and a decent possession flick.
More visual scares would've been much appreciated instead of the usual cheap-ass loud noises galore, which i'm starting to get really sick of in horror movies these days.
"Cheap Thrills" 7/10
Starring the two lead actors from The Innkeepers this is a dark and grotesque comedy/thriller in the line of 13 Sins. I liked 13 Sins better.

Let the Right One In (2008)
4/10
I was looking forward to seeing this film, as I heard it was really good. I give the film credit for aspects of originality in setting, pace, premise and icy mood. It was very subtle in it's directorial approach, and that sort of new realism in speaking lines sparely and nonchalantly. I appreciate a film with subtly and one that allows me to form my own opinions about characters, but there wasn't enough there for me -- the characters were too cold and inaccessible, and the story too recessed. Maybe one has to be in the mood for this style. I didn't really care about the boy, girl, guardian or mother -- and so there was no film for me.

Not horror....watched a documentary called "Let the Fire Burn" about the city of Philadelphia's attempts to evict radical group MOVE from a house they were occupying in West Philadelphia. Wasn't living here then (was in USAF), so, was kind of familiar with what happened (I had family in Philly). This documentary goes in-depth. It's not sympathetic to either party (MOVE or the city). To me, showed what a total cluster-fuck the entire operation was. Mayor Goode should have been jailed. And the police chief. And the fire chief.

This was really boring. Nothing scary about it at all unless what you call scary is a movie being really quiet and then suddenly GETTING REALLY LOUD!!! The plot made no sense and seemed like a poor mashup of a ghost and exorcism movie without a ghost or an exorcism. Besides for Jared Harris who's always good and Sam Claflin who genuinely seemed to be trying, the acting was pretty bad and the ending was stupid.

heehee - I try to be good about giving movies a "final" rating but I was feeling lazy. ::wink::
Stage Fright - I'll ultimately give this a 3.25/5 or 3.5/5; the rating may seem low because I've put my "official" Seal of Recommendation on it but it's a bit uneven. It's one of those movies that has a lot of high points and a lot of low points and depending on where your interests lie, you could fall either way in liking or hating it... I personally enjoyed it as fun horror fluff and might like it even more after repeat viewings. The fact that it's a silly musical might be prohibitive to some folks but I thought it was a total blast. I actually wish there were more musical numbers in it.
Also, to add context to the viewing - The Hubby and I were trying to decide who would pick the movie that night - I wanted Stage Fright and he wanted I, Frankenstein - THANK GOD I won with a coin flip. He enjoyed it thoroughly too.
(we wound up watching I, Frankenstein the next day but I thankfully fell asleep and missed it)
In Fear - I ultimately give this a 2/5. I was really disappointed. The blurb on Xfinity On Demand called it "One of the best modern horror movies" or some rubbish like that so my expectations were probably higher than the should have been but, still - Even going into this movie with no expectations I probably would have been disappointed. They try to create a self-contained slow-burner but it's just ultimately not interesting. I didn't care for either of the characters and their situation (being lost in the middle of the country) is not a new or interesting plot device and the director didn't do anything innovative with it.
Blue Ruin

I'm actually really looking forward to this one, simply based on the fact that I loved the director's first movie, Murder Party - Have you seen Murder Party? Great low-budget horror.

This was incredible. I remember after First Class came out, i felt like it was the best X-Men movie ever made. Well this one just beat it. The story is great. It's creative, interesting, actually makes sense which was something i was worried about and ties into the original movies fantastically. The acting is really good, the action scenes are great especially the last act and any of the future parts with The Sentinels. The opening scene is especially chilling. Another thing i loved was that it fixes all the mistakes made in Last Stand very easily and nicely. Can't wait for the next one.

Fantastic! Never seen another film with such relentless energy and pace as this one.
They deviated from the original comic storyline a bit, but that simply didn't matter. McAvoy and Fassbender were fantastic, but the guy who played Quicksilver ran circles around the entire star cast from the moment of his entry. It was heartening to see the original team members back in full force, and to see Iceman finally come into his own.
Such a star-studded action-packed film usually ends up having weaker characters and a thin non-existent storyline, but I must whole-heartedly credit Singer for pulling off a great, great storyline with almost equal weightage to all the characters involved. My favorite Jennifer Lawrence has made Mystique all of her own, and makes you forget Rebecca Romijn's take completely. I am a bit miffed at the makers for cutting out Rogue's scenes - but hopefully they will be added in an extended cut Blu-Ray release.
Enjoyed the heck out of it, and going to rewatch it over the weekend. The best X-Men film yet, even outshines the original!

It's Underworld all over again, but this time the war's between gargoyles and demons. Everyone's favorite monster finds himself bang in the middle of the centuries old feud, just because the demon prince wants his immortality secret to re-animate human corpses as possessed by demons, and the gargoyles will do everything to stop that.
Entertaining for those who like their contemporary horror served to them in dollops of CGI platter, but hardcore fans will be bitterly disappointed. Like the monster, the film simply lacks a soul. I realise the film is based on a graphic novel but bleh...if only they had removed the monster out, maybe the film would have been a bit more bearable.
The slow, lumbering Shelley's creature is no longer hideous and ugly, but now a handsome, muscular, FAST demon hunter, and is named Adam as well!! Aaron Eckhart does his best impersonation, but without the towering presence and the hideous ugliness, simply doesn't convince anyone of being the product of Dr. Frankenstein's experiment. The other cast members (most of them are instantly recognisable from the Underworld series) do their bit, and it was a downer to see the uber-hot Yvonne Strahovski (http://www.yvonne-strahovski.eu/gallery/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Yvonne-Strahovski-Maxim-Australia-March-2012-08.jpg) reduced to a lab coat.
If you love CGI eye-wideners, this would be right up your alley. If you have even a little bit of love (and respect) for horror's favorite monster, you will skip this and forget it as an abomination like Van Helsing was.

I absolutely adore this film. Have you seen Stagefright:Aquarius by the same director? It's another one of my faves
I watched Stagefright Aquarius a couple of months ago, had no idea it was the same director although i did recognize the name. Thanks for that nugget of information, haha. And yes i thought Stagefright was a good film.

Wet Hot American Summer(2001)
Starring lots of known actors in their early days.
Movie itself was quite average. It tried to be serious and funny at the same time but it just wasn't working.
I'll try.
I misread.
This is what I read, hence my confusion.

Had low expectations so I was pleasantly surprised.
Some stories were quite interesting.
But I would have preferred longer stories with a bit more depth.
Overal entertaining enough so I'm gonna watch part 2 soon.

V/H/S 2 (2013)
Less interesting and less clever than part 1. Still worth the watch for the good bits.
There's the main story and 4 tapes.
Main story: meh.
Tape 1: average.
Tape 2: good
Tape 3: good/great
Tape 4: bad and a bit too cheap for this day and age
Didn't have subtitles for the Indonesian bits, don't know if that's normal?
Spoilers/discussion
"-Didn't care much for the first tape. But I'm no fan of that ghost stuff.
-The zombie tape was real fun to watch but the ending was a bit dumb.
-The cult, what the fuck was that?! Pretty brutal and over the top.
-The aliens. What a load of crap that was. Might have been good in the 90's. "

That would have to be The Tunnel (2011) - I didn't expect much when I saw the trailer, but it surprised me in a very good way. Especially considering the fact that the movie had a VERY limited budget.

I loved the third tape - I thought that it was brilliant and really captured a creepy, unsettling tone.
It's the same director who did The Raid: Redemption - Fantastic action movie; I definitely recommend that one too.
I don't think there were subtitles because it was "found footage;" they wanted it to seem as though the tape was truly "found" (hope that makes sense)

It was my favorite tape too.
Wouldn't mind seeing the director making a full horror movie.
The Raid is good, I read the sequel's even better.
Just found out a 3rd V/H/S movie is coming. I'm looking forward to it.

VHS and VHS 2. The first one had solid horror, but wayyy too much rape, sexual assault and blatant nudity for nudity's sake. When it becomes a distraction, I get bored with it. However, I thought it delivered great freak outs.
The 2nd did away with the bullshit and got right to the scares. I actually really enjoyed it. The cult story actually reminded me of a short story I once worked on.

Incredibly entertaining in a Deep Blue Sea kinda way (thanks, Angra!). It actually had a couple of gruesome little parts too. Perfect Saturday afternoon cheesey horror flick (I mean, with the likes of LL Cool J, Christian Slater, and Johnny Lee Miller, how could this go wrong??)

Siren -
This should be a good movie. The premise alone in a modern setting should inspire writers to come up with something good. I like ancient stories and myths of Sirens and other creatures. And I thought there were going to be three Sirens. I think the original myth had three of them. I can't remember. But anyway this movie isn't a good one. They found pretty actresses for the two lead roles. The actress who plays the Siren has an old world exotic look and her performance has a lot of mysterious and beguiling characteristics. The song she sings is beautiful too.
The setting is good. But the male leads are forgettable jerks. For example, when they are stranded what do they decide to do? Start drinking and have fun. Horror movie 101 stuff that doesn't belong in this situation. For some reason I missed, the movie starts out with the lead actress role playing as a low end hitchhiker / street walker type. I don't know why either. It's like they want to foreshadow a twist with her but it's stupid and pointless. It's like they tried to create some kind of tension in the relationship between the two main characters to the point of having the third person be an ex-boyfriend that still wants the lead actress. But it goes no where. It's like the whole movie is a low budget, experiment or something. I didn't see the box art before watching this but I can see how reviewers on IMDB feel mislead too.
I think the whole element of the Siren, with the good casting of the actress could have been so much more. There is a scene near the end that reveals something of the damage she causes. But it's no where near the scope I would imagine. I guess that could have been a budget issue. But if I directed it, if the characters made it to the other side of the island there would have been cliffs and an old temple. Plus ruins of all kinds of different boats. In Siren the reveal is fairly tame.

SLEEPWALKERS 1992
A sweet movie about a boy and his mom.....HAVING SEX!!! There were lots of cats in this movie(adorable), Ferris Bueller's parents, Hellboy and Stephen King in a bit part as a cemetery caretaker.
I can never dislike a movie because one man's junk is another man's treasure (though junk has a different meaning these days...) . But this was alright, I didn't mind it.

The film starts off with a full-on, aggressive, nude sex scene. Rather pointless, if it was to highlight the wonders of sex after smoking pot, or it was to show how hooked the female was to drugs. Either way, the truck has the last laugh (literally).
More of the same as parts I & II, with plenty of excessive gory deaths. My gripe - the blonde stunner should have survived. Plenty of eye-rolling moments and some typical insipid acting, except for Kirzinger who pulls off a semi-decent Rusty Nail.
Watch if you have nothing else to see, or if you are a huge fan of trucks, racing cars and gorific deaths. Others can skip it.

Low-budget effort made as a throwback to the golden era films, basically XTRO meets Fire in the Sky meets Body Snatchers. And no, it's not as delicious as the previous line suggests - the acting is bad, the settings limited, and the plot is a complete mish-mash. Some of the fx looks decent but that's the only redeeming part of the film.

They should have called it 300: War on the Seas instead. A worthy albeit unnecessary companion piece to the original testosterone-filled saga, this "sequel" is made watch-worthy because of the presence of Eva Green. And of course, the relentless sequences of clashing swords, spears/arrows flying through the air, blood spraying the screen in bucketfuls, and gore aplently.
There's so much clanging of metal that it will leave your ears ringing for days. Be sure to watch a musical or hear some songs after the film is over. And, why do I have the feeling that we will see a part 3 in the future?
BTW, was "fuck" a word back in ancient Greece and Persian times?
Oh, almost forgot. Eva's boobs rule. As does her overpowering sex scene. Again.
