KISS THE ABYSS 2012

A young woman's husband and father bring her back to life after she dies in a home invasion. They take her body to a man who lives in the desert, money changes hands and they are told "no returns". She is brought back to life and it becomes clear they made a big mistake.

I really liked it.
Kind of a "grass is always greener on the other side" film? ::big grin::

I just looked at the trailer. I can tell I haven't seen it yet. I saw Hellraiser 2, but wasn't impressed. Looks like H3 with all it's special effects, is kinda like Nightmare on Elm St 3: Dream Warriors.

On Rotten Tomatoes the audience score is 36% for 42,000 ratings. That's pretty bad. It's even worse than the critics 41%, which isn't a bad critics score for a horror film. ::big grin::

I need to see Nightmare on Elm Street 3 again. Actually the whole series. Part 1 and 4 are my favorites. But I know I don't like the ending of Part 3 much. And I can't remember Part 5 or 6 much at all.

A lot of people like Hellraiser 2 because of the story continuation. I find Part 2 a bit too horror fantasy. Here is review I did in a few posts of all the movies in the series when they had them on demand a few years ago.

http://horror.com/forum/showthread.php?p=983003&highlight=hellraiser#post983003

FRIDAY THE 13th (2009). Will praise the 1980 original from now to the end of time. For the money they didn't have. (think it cost under a million??), it looks polished and truly scary.
Didn't really have high expectations for this, but just amazed at how BAD it was, and for all that money too. No scares, no pacing, characters that were even more annoying than the annoying characters in the sequels, but kind of neat how they threw in little references from past F13 films. Some honeys ,especially Julianna Guill and as a big SUPERNATURAL fan, the wife enjoys drooling over Jared Padalecki, helped out a bit, but even that wasn't worth sitting through this. 1/2

I'm not the biggest fan of the original Friday the 13th. I don't own it. Only Friday the 13th Part 2. As I find that has the best parts of the original. But yeah the remake is terrible. I watched it a few times and even watched the Killer Cut hoping that would make a difference. But no, the remake is a truly horrible movie. The blonde girl is the best thing with that drinking dance. But she's in a bit better movie called Mine Games.

I still hate the twists in the remake. The one girl's death in the tunnel will always make me angry. It's just a pointless movie that just believes Friday the 13th is stupid kids, nudity, and some kills. So many bad things about that movie. Jason protecting a pot farm. Second half not even at a camp for the most part. Town that knows Jason is there. Powered tunnel and taking hostages. That ending. I hate the movie.

Yea,, I liked it alright as well. We need more Rose Red’ish movies. Rose Red was garbage, but i really like the concept.

Oh, by the way. I don’t believe the writers have any kids, because they obviously have no idea how they talk or act.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga 6-7/10

If you’re not a fan of the Eurovision you’ll probably find this musical/comedy quite boring and even awful.

Now, I’m quite a fan, so I enjoyed to see a movie poke fun at the Eurovision, but at the same time being one big love letter to the contest and all it’s about. If you’ve followed the Eurovision for many years there’s a LOT to recognize and laugh at, such as many of the acts, songs and stage shows. But what I enjoyed the most was that they had Will Ferrell look like swedish E-type (best Eurovision song/performance ever). ::cool::

Kevin James as an escaped nazi prisoner. Nope, doesn’t work. Even with a big beard, shaved head and a fat nazi tattoo on the neck he still looks and sounds cuddly.

As for the story. Meh, it’s a ridiculous but entertaining enough cat and mouse flick with one nasty eyeball scene.

Jay & Silent Bob Reboot.

The amount of people I've seen both trashing this movie and singing it's praises is pretty unusual.

I take neither side.
It was "ok" but unremarkable.
Smith brought back a hell of a lot of characters...but...I can't help but feel we got largely the same film with "Dumb & Dumber too" a few years back.
Didn't really have the charm or edge of Smiths other "Jersey Chronicles" films though...it had a few laughs...but wasn't really absurd as is their thing.

I'm afraid it was just a little too "please everyone" and "family friendly" to really feel at home among the rest of the films.

I'll still watch Clerks 3 (that's another thing that was annoying...Dante but no Randall?) but yeah to be honest I don't think I'll bother with this one again.

The Helpers (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1854582/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt) starts off as a run of the mill slasher, but gains steam with some good, inventive kills. A few more of these, a bit of a shorter build up and perhaps a better ending would have really made it stand out.

4/10

Wow, that was pretty bad. At least it was only 1hr 40mins; or maybe that was the problem. The director Josh Trank (Chronicle 2012) complained about studio interference, assumedly for editing/cuts. Except for the beginning, all the story arcs and character developments seems cutoff and stunted, the ending even seemed abrupt.

The special effects were pretty cool. But unfortunately there's very little action.

There were changes from the superhero comic cannon, but the worst part of it was the horrible lack of rendering of Dr Doom's powers. If they were going to keep it lowbrow and shallow, the audience could have at least enjoyed cool special effects action of the Fantastic 4 type, but alas, no.

I only saw that one once, and don't remember much about it. I do remember that I enjoyed the two where Chris Evans played the Human Torch a lot better, and didn't feel that any of the characters or the story were developed that well in this version. I also saw the cheesey one that got shelved back in the early 1990s, and even found that one entertaining in a chessetastic or "so bad it's good" sort of way. It's almost sad for the new one when I'm finding ways where even the cheesey one that shelved in the '90s is more enjoyable than this one. ::big grin::

The last time I checked out a relatively new movie from recent years was a little double feature on Prime, where I finally got to see "All Hallow's Eve," with our friend Art the Clown. This one starts off as a parody on the original Halloween, parodying the scene where Laurie Strode baby sat the two children, watching horror films after trick or treating. The boy finds a VHS tape in his bag, not knowing where it came from or who dropped it in there. It turned out to show a Art the Clown killing different people in different ways. The baby sitter turns it off, saying it's all just fake, but the children are still scared, thinking it's real, and that the clown might show up to get them all. After putting the children to bed, the baby sitter watches the tape to see the different people getting killed off in different ways by Art the Clown. The rest is overall predictable but still overall well done and worth a look. Fans of both the slasher genre and of our friend Art the Clown should find this one enjoyable or at least worth a look for one time. ::devil::

I also looked back at the new horror anthology film I mentioned a while back called "Tales Of Fear," which, as mentioned before, is a good live action version of stories based on E.C. Comics with bad karma getting those who have it coming to them in unique, original, and entertaining sorts of ways. ::danger::

You can never go wrong with an Art The Clown/E.C. Comics double feature! ::cool::

With the Fantastic Four (F4), it's kind of like when George Lucas said he started the Star Wars saga at Episode 4 because the technology wasn't there to do the first three properly. The F4 done right require a lot of great CG, which is possible now. Besides an 'origin story', an F4 film needs to be crazy loaded with complex CG action.

I enjoyed the first F4 with Chris Evans/Human Torch too. I haven't seen the sequel yet.

And another thing. It didn't contain a single jump scare. Magnificent!

If you can get past the first 20 minutes of slow build-up there's actually a good horror movie waiting. Especially fans of "Slither" might enjoy it, even though it's not on the same budget or has as much action. But it has some really nasty moments and some creepy scenes with crawling people, which reminded me of the cellar scene in Salems Lot (1979) where the undead comes crawling towards the open door. Haven't been this creeped out since the woman in the sewers in "Apostle". Nice.

I only wish The Beach House had more of the good stuff. Because that stuff was really good.

House of Blood (aka Chain Reaction) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460742/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2) - A bit of gore here and there makes it fun, but the story is pretty forgettable stuff.

Think of how the vampires from the Titty Twister now live in a old timey house in the woods. And ever so often, a bunch of prisoners drop in from the worst prison transports ever. (Soooo... Anyone on the care list? Not really.) I'm pretty sure there is something at the end that was supposed to be a twist, it's just that by then I was too zoned out to care.

I found this as a freebie on Prime with commercials, and thought it looked funny in an over the top way, and it is. It is a comedy parodying the monster movies with good over the top humor and dialogue. The giant spider is overall cool looking, while the CGI fx are not in the highest quality, but are still good enough to keep the movie interesting and entertaining. They are also better than the cheap CGI fx that you can tell are computer animated and added to the picture, despite that last one might not be saying much. It is not a masterpiece, but it's not meant to be. It is just a good parody on the monster movies for when you feel like that sort of thing. ::cool::

I also saw that one on Netflix after reading the novella in "Full Dark, No Stars" by Stephen King, and it actually portrays the novella excellently. It may not be big budget, but not only does the story take place in rural America back in 1922, where and when times were a lot more primitive than they are now, no need for any big budget to make that time and setting look real and authentic, plus horror films don't need to be big budget in order to be good. It's more of a matter on knowing what you're doing and how to do it right with what you got then how big of a budget you have. They did overall well with what they have and really brought the story to life in an impressive way, especially the Sweetheart Bandits scenes, in my opinion. I finally got to see this one, and it was about time. I actually found this one overall scary and amazing, and definitely much better than the remakes. It was definitely interesting to not only see Laurie Strode(Jamie Lee Curtis) as an older lady now, the little girl from Halloween IV and V now a grown woman who is married with a teenage daughter of her own, but most interesting to see Michael Myers with a bald head and gray beard now. This sequel actually shows a lot of good reference and tribute to the original movie before taking off into the brand new story, which is very interesting, intense, and scary. I am looking forward to seeing the sequel that follows it. ::danger::

I'm looking forward to seeing "In The Tall Grass" and "Gerald's Game" on Netflix before too long. ::devil::
The director of 1922 surely knew what they were doing. It's textbook. Gerald's Game was pretty entertaining. There's a subplot involving a tall man that's a real headscratcher.

THE BREAK UP (2006). Story about a Young couple who splinter under the weight of small annoyances building up to intolerable. Can they resolve these issues? This wasn't bad overall, but the bickering wears thin and I found most of the humor came from their unusual relatives and friends. **1/2

I wonder how much the budget was for this horror flick. Didn't look cheap.

Not a bad movie. Wasn't surprised to notice it was the same director who made The Butterfly Effect, because the last 20 minutes.... erhm..::roll eyes::

Better than it has any business to be, given that it's a humble little picture from the Isle of Man. A washed up 80s tv-actor (think a low rent, British Steve Austin) is hired to help catch a criminal who believes the character is real, but he's only interested in using it for fame again.

Passes the 6 laugh test for sure.

LAND OF THE DEAD (2005). I like this, but it just doesn't resonate with Me like NIGHT, DAWN (those two will forever be in my Top 10) and DAY. It reminds Me a lot of the STAR WARS where the first three films are the keepers...the ground breaking premiere, the "Epic" sequel and a somewhat misunderstood third film, requiring a couple of viewings to get it. My wife loves Episodes 4-6, but has no patience with anything else after that. Nostalgia may play a factor or also less responsibilities.
Was very pleased when I heard George was making another Zombie film after the success of 28 DAYS LATER, DAWN OF THE DEAD reboot and SHAUN OF THE DEAD actually got him into a major studio (Universal) and some decent $$ (believe 15-20 million??).
To be honest, George was a Maverick and I enjoy the films where He didn't have a huge budget or big crew...this truly has "Too Many Cooks" and the same premise is pulled out where "The Dead walk and Man is his own worst enemy". Add to a cast of better known actors (certainly more known than the first three) and it doesn't resonate as much with Me. I even enjoyed Tom Savini's lower grade effects from earlier more than Nicotero's more advanced techniques, although Greg does pull off some good ones here. Still worth seeing and a oddly subdued Dennis Hooper (doing a Donald Rumsfeld?) is great here, especially when He bellows "You have NO RIGHT!" ***

Add a bad case of main characteritis, sprinkle in some jump scares and one or two lame call backs to the original and boom, we're off to the races.

Yep, good to see a few familiar faces are still around ::wink:: Thanks Hammer, I will check out both of them. A co-worked actually said I should check out "The Haunting Of Hill House" the other day. She also recommended me "The Terror" a while back (which I liked) so I will add that and Host to my watchlist.

Yeah, most of what I have seen in the Horror world has been pretty bad, as far as reading plots and looking at trailers and stuff over the last several years. Everything looks low budget and not in a good way. I've caught a few bigger name movies like "It", "Underwater", "The Meg", etc. and of course the more recent entries in TCM and Halloween, but that's about it in the last 5 years at least.

That said, very glad I watched it. Masterclass in unsettling editing and a fantastic depiction of how our minds work, particularly when we're at breaking point. Basically a film of hundreds of metaphors. I suspect the dinner scene in particular was filmed and edited in the same way as Willem Dafoe questioning Patrick Bateman in American Psycho - filmed with several different acting styles/motivations, then patchworked together.

I won't rewatch any time soon - takes it out of you, but I highly recommend.

Huge Kaufman fan, and I'm super glad this is what we got after so many years between his last directorial effort. I liked how unsettling it was. I liked that I didn't quite get it after first viewing. But, most importantly, I liked that it had me thinking afterwards and that it made me want to watch the film again to pick up on certain things. I hadn't read any reviews going in, and I knew very little of the plot. The proper way to go into a movie. I think I loved it. I'm going to give it another day or so before I re-watch, but I'm definitely watching it again. Based on his previously written/directed efforts, wasn't expecting such a horror vibe. haha.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

Tommy Jarvis

Do You See Me (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6196598/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt) Props to the people who did the score and sound effects. It really helped build up tension. The opening scene was scary too, but in all honesty, the further the film went, the less I saw it's relevancy into the story.

The story itself was a bit of a disappointment. Nothing really happens up until the very end (and even then it's not much, especially based on the first scene), so the scares are based on a few weird texts and a few sightings of a clown in the distance.

Maybe it was the filmmaker's intention to delve into the the territory of metoo and women who do not feel believed. How the fear of what actually happens is smaller than the fear of what might happen. That sort of thing. But then you want a main character you can sympathize with and that's a bit hard with someone who throws away tangible evidence and comes with a "I did my research"-line.

Plus, why would there be only ONE clown in the closet?

FLESH AND BLOOD:A HAMMER HISTORY (1997). Would have liked this to be a little longer, but quite enjoyable film of the beginnings of the company to the Little Studio that Could (after CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and especially HORROR OF DRACULA) to the sad decline that seemed to be more about budgets and not keeping up to current trends. Although, to be honest, I really would not have wanted Hammer to try something in the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE mode. Also impressed by the other avenues they explored; Comedies, War dramas, "PSYCHO" inspired mysteries and even some Pirate movies-got a copy of PIRATES OF BLOOD RIVER from VIDEO SCREAMS and will checking it out soon.

Many clips from the films and a lot of interview snatches with the talent behind and in front of the camera. What makes it melancholy for Me is the fact that SO MANY of them have passed away. ***1/2

I THINK I LOVE MY WIFE (2007). This Chris Rock film has several funny moments (especially in the ambulance), but the plot feels forced. Chris is married (to Gina Torres from FIREFLY/ALIAS) with children and a upscale job. Not as much sex as he would want, so he is staring at other women all day and finds his fidelity tested when an old friend's ex-girlfriend (Kerry Washington from SCANDAL) shows up. You think that just sitting down and talking to the wife about his feelings might help the situation instead of being manipulated by the shallow good time girl. **

Terminator 6 Dark Fate -

I remember hearing news about Dark Fate's opening at the time of the movie's release and spoiled it for myself back then. I'm glad I spoiled it too because I would have walked out. What Terminator 6 or Terminator Dark Fate is, is The Terminator version of Star Trek 2009. An early movie twist to attempt a reboot of the series. But unlike with how that new Star Trek series took 3 movies to flop and for fans to realize those movies were basically flashy garbage. This new Terminator won't even get a sequel considering its box office totals. If the people in charge were really creative, they would make a new cyberpunk movie. But of course they aren't and are basically lottery winners that try to cash in on a known film property.

Dark Fate is a barely passable action Terminator movie. I say action Terminator because that is basically what these movies are after the first two. The original two movies are not only two of the best sci-fi, horror, action movies but two of the best movies ever made. And they are cyberpunk movies as well. The original more than the second. But Terminator 2 still has its cyberpunk scenes and look. Nothing about Dark Fate says cyberpunk other than maybe one of the future attack scenes and the fact that the movie has robots. And that's the real shame that the people in charge of these movies don't get. They have been fine with making action Terminator movies not cyberpunk movies since Terminator 3.

I could write a book or graduate level thesis paper on what is wrong with all The Terminator movies after Terminator 2. It's not the actors fault in Dark Fate. It's the people behind the camera. Mackenzie Davis' role as Grace was the best part. But she was fine in the new Blade Runner as well, which is a good movie and worthy sequel. But it's like that rule of too many Black people in Walking Dead. It's a similar rule in Dark Fate. And if they just realized that they had a good actress to base a series on maybe they could have moved away from the pattern of the first two movies.

In the end, the Terminator series is for the most part dead now. I'm still going to play the game that came out last year. Supposedly that is pretty good. I did kind of enjoy the Sarah Connor TV show. But for every good episode there were a bunch of bad ones. Or episodes that showed the show's low budget.

I remember the T2 Infiltrator book being pretty good. Better than all the movies after Terminator 2 from what I remember. I still want to read the other two books in the series.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T2_(novel_series)

There are far more comics than I remember.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Terminator_comics

I have to check my collection to see what I have. But the few I remember purchasing were ok. Also better than the movies after Terminator 2. There is a recent comic series that came out last year I think which I want to check out. And I'm still working on my Terminator display setup with this poster as the anchor.

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QAJGUQccGLk/Vtfcxwq41MI/AAAAAAABXFc/iafA8-AkVRU/s400/Stan-Vince-The-Terminator-Movie-Poster-2016.jpg

But I do think that if you are going to continue Terminator properly it should be on the big screen. I really liked the 3D movie that was at Universal Studios. I saw that a bunch of times. But it was more an action thing than a real movie with a solid story.

I think what I'm going to do is write an outline for how Terminator should have continued after Terminator 2 if they wanted to make a trilogy. And Terminator deserves a good trilogy like Back to the Future or the original Star Wars series. I always thought James Cameron put clues in Terminator 2 for a potential sequel but no one used it yet. I don't think the T2 Infiltrator book used it. So I'm going to use it.

I haven't seen all of Murry's films, but I think the best is Groundhog Day, in which he served the film well, without over Murryfying it. Whereas he hipped Scrooged. Then there's good films with smaller parts like Budapest Hotel and Rushmore.

If you haven't, check out "The man who knew too little", A later (though pre "I'm an actor with depth" era) Murray movie that I've found not many people have seen.

In my eyes Dreyfus was the star in What About Bob. It was solely him who took home all the laughs. Groundhog Day might be the only Murray movie where I found him hilarious. Most of the time he's just cringy.

Oh, by the way, have you seen an interview of Dreyfus talking about his What About Bob days with Murray? He sounds like a really nice guy..

GUNS (1990). Andy Sidaris crime/action film (lots of gunplay, explosions, cheesy dialogue etc) as envisioned by Russ Meyer (lots of overly zaftig PLAYBOY Playmates-at least 6 with Roberta Vasquez ::love:: standing out).
Have heard that if You watch one Sidaris film, You've watched them all. This has it's moments, but on the whole, just kind of routine and one time should be sufficient. Erik Estrada plays the Bad Guy with relish, an early Danny Trejo appearance as well as Phyllis Davis (TERMINAL ISLAND, SWEET SUGAR, TV's LOVE AMERICAN STYLE and VEGAS) who still looks dynamite, much more appealing than most of the Playmates. **

I really enjoyed this.
There was a while since I've seen a good home invasion movie.

Huh... I thought it was utter crap.

I liked the vibe. It reminded me a bit of the Strangers when I saw it in 2008.
It's nothing new, of course, but I can't think of anything wrong about it.
I liked the side plot with the couples.

Since The Guest and Apostle I've been a huge fan of Dan Stevens, so I expected another bad ass horror movie with him in it. It certainly wasn't.

Yeah, I like him a lot too.
Avoided Apostle, no idea why. Worth a watch?

In my opinion it was the best horror movie to come out that year together with Bording School and Better Watch Out.

Dawn of the Dead (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363547/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) - One of those remakes that does it's original justice. It captured the tone in showing how the world falls apart and managed to make characters like Michael, Tucker and Ana likable. Granted, I may be a bit biased because after seeing this in the theater, I had a major crush on Sarah Polley.

Other than that, we have Johnny Cash with some amazing opening credits, ultimate badass (nominees) Ving Rhames and Tom Savini and... holy shit, it's Doug Stamper. ::big grin::

If you haven't, check out "The man who knew too little", A later (though pre "I'm an actor with depth" era) Murray movie that I've found not many people have seen.

Quick Change is a pretty good forgotten film.

Both are going on the watchlist. Thanks for the tip.

I haven't seen all of Murry's films, but I think the best is Groundhog Day, in which he served the film well, without over Murryfying it. Whereas he hipped Scrooged. Then there's good films with smaller parts like Budapest Hotel and Rushmore.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by murryfying it?

Oh, by the way, have you seen an interview of Dreyfus talking about his What About Bob days with Murray? He sounds like a really nice guy..

Would that by any chance be on Youtube?

I do remember Dreyfuss being likeable in the commentary track for Jaws.

Yeah, I was entertained. It was different than the original, had a cool jump start, and for the most part was well paced. I give films credit for knowing what they are and just trying to do that well. It wasn't great, nor, from what I remember, significant in anyway, but at the time fairly different and entertaining.

With the right crowd of friends, I liked, The man who knew too little, but kind of wish he Murrayfied it more. Quick Change is a pretty good forgotten film.Out of curiosity, what do you mean by murrayfying it?
Murray has his humor, "chewing the furniture" as it's called in the business. Probably the best example of Murrayfying is in Caddy Shack... just really heavy humor, but also the Murray personality, where he's kind of playing himself, like in Ghostbusters. That kind of force can overshadow character development and other revelatory aspects of other actors emotions and plot points.

I think in Groundhog Day Murray is funny, but he keeps it within the character and doesn't overshadow important story aspects.

Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Return of the Living Dead 1 & 2
28 Weeks Later
World War Z
Day of the Dead (2008)

Stay Home - Horror Short

NEWQvXEZUEs

This is an ok reality horror short movie. I only checked it out because it has Danielle Harris and many other horror actors in it. Scout Taylor-Compton shows up along with Barbara Crampton, Kane Hodder, and Dee Wallace. It's kind of clever and worth a watch. The movie is only 15 or so minutes.

That seemed kind of interesting, so it's on my NETFLIX queue.

JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY (1993). Found this and Jason X on a DVD for under $5, so not having seen them, decided to complete the series.
Was hoping New Line would devote more money than Paramount was to the series, but despite better than normal actors (Steven Williams was pretty badass::cool:: and neat seeing Erin Grey again) and much better FX (by KNB; the Tent scene was pretty wild, albeit nasty) the same dumb characters and implausible scenarios took over. Noticed elements from much better films like THE HIDDEN, THE THING and ALIEN appearing and an absolutely ridiculous ending.
Once again, the only F13 film that matters is the 1980 original. *
