The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Best Wes Anderson movie so far.
Cool story, interesting characters, solid acting, beautiful scenery,..
I'm sure it's not for everyone but I thought it was really good.
Only thing I don't get is that it's shot in 16:9.

"Blended" 5/10
Had a few funny Barrymore scenes, but sadly most of the movie was painful to watch. I would like to blame the kids but the story wasn't very good either. Entertaining enough tho.
I'm sure it will appeal to fans (If there are any) of Adam Sandlers Spanglish and Just Go With It.
I'm a fan of his less romantic and crazier comedies such as Happy Gilmore, Waterboy and Zohan. So.. not the target audience for this time waster.

The only reason I checked this out is because it stars both Bill Moseley and Danielle Harris. It's actually a pretty solid B-Movie splatter film. While it's low budget the practical special effects look good and there's plenty of gore.

An absolute blast! Released it here yesterday, so couldn't wait any longer to catch it on the theater. Really loved the way Singer & his team kept a seemingly complex plot so much simple & entertaining from start to finish. Loved Logan's "reunion" scene at the end. Now, waiting for 'Apocalypse'!

Excellent documentry about perhaps the greatest movie that was never made. Alejandro Jodorowsky pulled together the talents of HR Giger, Dan O'Bannon, Moebius, David Carridine, David Carradine, Micj Jagger and Salvador Dali but alas a single frame was never shot...
The interviews with Jodorowsky himself are amazing - the man is in his mid-80s and is so energetic, enthusiastic and just plain incredible. He has such a strong presence and charisma..

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack 2001
3/10
Many Godzilla franchise film fans consider this one of the best. I don't see it. I admire the somewhat complicated story, Earthlings from the future who are trying to prevent Japan from dominating the world in the future, travel back to 2000 to knock Japan down a notch. It was too silly and sappy for me. I couldn't connect with any of the characters who had very little development.

Two bad ones.
SLIGHT SPOILERS!!!
The Purge -
I thought this was going to be a good one from the cast. But the movie boils down to home invasion because kids do stupid things mixed in with an easy to see twist. The premise, that I disagree with just because of basic humanity, I assumed was going to be well thought out. But in the end it came down to siding with the people who want to loot, murder, etc. when disasters or anything else happen in society. To give those people 12 hours to do want they want. There are a few bits and pieces in the movie mention how it's good for the country. But it's clear what's happening is the well off are killing the poor and under privileged. A smarter movie would have shown how this is organized. The main killers who wear freaky masks with smiles are just yuppies trying to kill a minority because he managed to survive an attack and kill one of the smiley group. The main killer even smiles a lot without his mask and of course uses racism 101 and calls the guy a swine a lot. I guess they didn't want to be obvious and call him a pig or the "n" word. But the effect is the same. I thought there would be a twist with the survivor the family took in. That he was in the government trying to stop the Purge or something. However, they went with the far simpler twist of neighborhood jealously. I'll pass on the sequel now.
Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet -
I decided to watch this one because I saw Danielle Harris in the titles. But she doesn't show up until 38 minutes into the movie!
I almost finished my dinner during the long opening sequence. It seems to attempt an origin story like Halloween mixed with a tragic event. At the beginning the character easily kills then does nothing as she's raped. Afterwards she gains Jason like strength. I think there is a reason given but it's stupid to me. I almost stopped watching during the introduction of the stupid teens.
There's something about the violence in this movie. They want it to be harsh but at times it comes off as cartoony. I don't know for sure if it's the look, the music played with the scenes, or the acting during them. But it just comes off not as harsh as it should be. There is a hot girl in the movie and she gets what I immediately called the spaghetti twirl death. More funny than anything. Even the sound effect used when the killer walks is funny because of the height of the character. At least it was funny to me. It's just a pointless movie that shows how even your least favorite Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street movie is better than junk like this.

This was ok. It wasn't great but it was a timekiller. I am getting tired of the instantly resorting to murder when confronted by something you don't understand trope though. But there were some aspects i liked.
SPOILERS
There were some parts that i found surprisingly deep for a a movie like this. The awkward loner girl ends up falling in love with her double and they kiss and then merge together at the end with a smile on her face. To me that part of the movie wasn't some twisted bizarre kinky sex thing, it was an insecure girl who finally found someone she could be herself around and find happiness with and then when they merged, she found happiness within herself.
The other part i liked was the dark ending. The main character kills his girlfriend so he can be with the double who he was able to fix things with after fucking it up with his original girlfriend. But the only reason he was able to do that was he played off things the original girlfriend told him in the fight they had that night. He didn't change, he didn't grow. He just manipulated her in thinking he was a different person and killed his girlfriend. It was a dark twisted ending that was played off like it was romantic.

This was horrible. Boring and badly made. If its supposed to be a found footage movie how come it seems like the main character was able to edit the finish project complete with voiceover during a montage? That makes no sense plus it wasn't scary at all. Avoid

I actually really liked this one. It's definitely a slow burn but the characters are really likeable and there's a lot of humor during the initial build up stage. Once it gets to the scary moments, there is a scene that drags but they do a nice job building suspense. It really drew me in.

Two reasons to watch this film - the cinematography which captures the fantastic essence of the Australian outback (some angles are absolutely breath-taking, hats off to the director of photography), and the extremely ruthless and vile Mick Taylor. It's like the film picks off right from where part 1 ended, and for the first 30 minutes you are excused from thinking which one character is actually the lead one?! The game of cat-and-mouse continues all through the film, and by the time you actually start to feel some sympathy for the lead character, it's all over.
No prizes for guessing who comes out on top.
Among the highlight scenes is one fantastic sequence which might incur the wrath of PETA (unless it's a CGI-fied one), when hundreds of kangaroos suddenly "feel" the need to cross the road during a desperate chase sequence, and many get slaughtered and plastered by a 22-wheeler truck.

Interesting enough character piece though I feel as though I should have liked it more than I did, considering that the cast was brilliant and I really like that director... Could have been the mood that I was in but I found it a little drab. Oddly enough, I loved Blue Valentine - Could be that I just identified with the characters more there than I did in Pines - It gets a lot of good press and I get why, but was just flat for me.
I saw this tonight and loved it. I can see how you'd have to be in the right mood for it to work. It's long, and the three-act format is challenging, switching focus between character sets so abruptly every 45 minutes. Luckily I was up for a movie like this tonight, and it really paid off. The soundtrack by Mike Patton was great too. Now I'm going to have to seek out Blue Valentine.

-------------------------------------
Though it's out of the film's subject matter but just like to share that the character of Professor Coupland (played by Jared Harris) in this movie reminded me of Misir Ali...a famous character in Bengali Literature created in mid 80s by one of the most popular Bangladeshi authors Humayun Ahmed (1948-2012). Misir Ali is a rational psychologist. In the books, he is portrayed as a part-time professor of Psychology at the University of Dhaka. Though he is not a professional psychiatric consultant but because of his special interest & knowledge in Parapsychology and mysteries surround the human psyche; people suffering from paranormal or supernatural problems sometime comes to him in search of a satisfactory solution. As far I know, I believe Humayun Ahmed was the only author who introduced "Psychological Horror" in Bengali literature through his Misir Ali series and he's the only one who wrote Bengali novels, short stories & drama in this special genre, IMO. Humayun wrote 18 novels & 2 short story collections about strange cases of Misir Ali. I've always been a huge fan of Misir Ali stories. He's a non-believer but often likes to "believe" that the nature just only loves to play twisted games with human minds sometime and there's a scientific & psychological explanation in every supernatural or paranormal mysteries around him. Loved the way he used to come up with very interesting & rational explanations for some superbly creepy paranormal incidents. His commanding attitude or nature of controlling & rationalizing his own mind/self while confronting an utterly creepy supernatural incident always amazed me as a reader. Not all but there are some really cool & great novels/stories of Misir Ali that I totally believe can be perfectly suited for big screen adaptation but obviously requires some professional group of individuals who can handle it properly & got a good knowledge/understanding about horror cinema as well. But the frustrating & sad part is, though some people have tried in our TV media/channels but so far utterly failed to filmed them in any acceptable manner.

9/10.
Yeah, you're right; could have been that I wasn't in the right mood. Or maybe I had elevated expectations because of the press and how much I loved Blue Valentine - I'm interested to hear what you think of Blue Valentine... It's definitely grim, but it feels real - Gosling and Williams were just amazing to watch.

Guys. OMG. This movie was a total blast. Granted, I had very little expectations going into it - I knew that it was found footage and a comedy, so I was just hoping for a few laughs here and there but it was HYSTERICAL.
The thrives off of the dumb, base humor of adolescent boys - The story centers around two college kids who discover that their apartment building used to be a flophouse and they are being haunted its long-dead Madame... Who's horny. Very very horny.
Dick jokes, humping jokes, sex humor - This movie parodies both found footage films (Paranormal Activity in particular) and frat boy humor.
I laughed out loud multiple times, especially during the movie's climax (hur hur), which was just AMAZING.
Please go see this - It's dumb, hilarious, and a TON of fun. I really think that a lot of you on here will get a kick out of it (Newb, I have you specifically in mind).
I'm having a hard time giving this a star-rating. Did I have a blast watching it? Absolutely. Would I say that it's an amazing film to be added to the canon of horror movies? Not necessarily. But DAMN was it fun.

Two words: Loved it.
I hate to admit it, but I was originally turned off by this movie just because of the presence of Tom Cruise. I totally wrote it off. But I had heard that the source material, All You Need is Kill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_You_Need_Is_Kill), was a damn good manga, so I was intrigued. And as soon as the positive reviews started rolling in for the movie, I just had to go see it.
And I'm really glad that I saw it in the theater.
First and foremost, it's a solid scifi movie. Touches on the concept of - If you could live your day over and over again, what would you do? And what are the ramifications, especially when you're at war? The movie definitely hits some emotional highs and lows, just as good scifi should. And the reason behind why, exactly, he lives the day over and over again, was really damn clever and fascinating.
Secondly, it was a damn good action movie! I find most action movies to be dull and formulaic, but there were actual consequences to the action here - Death feels heavy and not just for the sake of a body count. The movie is absolutely intense and had me sitting at the edge of my seat a few times.
Thirdly, Emily Blunt is amazing. She is a kickass action hero and I absolutely loved watching her. And Tom Cruise was great in this role too. He's not the typical action hero (at least at the start), and it was fun to watch him as he adapts to the repetition of the day.
Fourth, the movie never takes itself too seriously. The humor is clever and it works - It plays with the circular time aspect and does it well.
And, finally, it was just damn fun to see in the theater.
I really loved this, guys. I recommend it.
4/5.

Godzilla Vs Destroyah 1995
3/10
Godzilla's inner nuke plant is overheating, it's explosion or meltdown could destroy the earth. Luckily there's a kid who has most simple suggestions that everyone will think are flabbergasting. The visuals of Godzilla pulsating in red light are cool. Other than that, there's not much to like. The dialogue is mind numbingly laughable. What must be done with Godzilla & when, keeps changing, and not in a good way. Many of the 90's G-films are alike, and this wasn't what I remembered.

I'm making my way through some of the Amityville films. The one I last watched involved someone bringing a possessed clock from the Amityville house into their home. This one involves a mirror given to a young photographer that was also from the Amityville house. People around him start dying mysteriously til his connection to the mirror is revealed.

Absolutely! It's making fun of the haunted house type found footage that you see in PA in general but doesn't specifically reference any PA plot points or anything.
Plus the humor is so over-the-top and silly that it doesn't matter if you've seen those movies. It's like watching frat boys goof off. In a good way. ::big grin::

The horribly retitled Witching & Bitching is a high octane off beat comedy horror, in the same vein as his earlier Day of the Beast while The Baby's Room is a atmospheric haunted house horror. A man builds a new home for his family on a lot where the previous house had burnt down. In an original back building on the lot, he finds a dollhouse crafted in the likeness of the Amityville house. here be spoilers:
Being a fan of Bobcat's last film I was looking forward to this. Then I found out it was going to be of the "found footage variety" and my boner subsided a bit.
For a ff movie the video was pretty good...some of them are almost unwatchable with all the shaking. The two main actors were also very good. My biggest complaint is about 3/4 through there's this one scene where the camera is on the two actors huddled in the tent just listening to noises....and it goes on forever. I get that it's suppose to build tension...and it does..for a bit...then it seem like one of those over-long "Family Guy" jokes. Also bummed that there was NO reveal. Unless Bigfoot is suppose to look like Kathy Bates in "At Play in the Fields of the Lord"

Based on some good reviews, I gave Almost Human (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2325517/?ref_=nv_sr_3) a chance. It was not bad for a low budget movie, but it ended up being just so derivative that it took me out of the movie. It's a movie that reminds me of too many other movies. However, the 'rape' scene was genuinely grotesque and horrifying. It's also a bloody movie but not as bloody as was reported.

Worth watching just for the presence of Kevin Costner and Kenneth Branagh, and some cool action sequences. Chris Pine looks too boyish to be Jack Ryan, and Keira Knightley merely fills in the blanks.

Could have been a semi-decent film, if not for that eyeroller of a climax and the events thereafter. Borrows plenty from Taken with a bit of Red thrown in, and it could have been great after that sucker punch twist 30 minutes into the film.
Nic Cage sleepwalks through the most part, except for the grieving where he really touched my most sensitive nerve (being an emotional Dad of a girl myself). Rachel Nichols is a real hottie and is miscast, so is Peter Stormare. Needed better casting choices for those 2 roles. The best part of the film is it's background score - it's so impressive I'll have to download it and set it as my ringtone.
As things stood, a promising film let totally down by it's second half. Sorry Sean, you have to do better.

Midnight Movie -
This movie has one of the best ideas I've seen in a recent horror movie. It has been used before in movies like The Ring and a few others that I can't remember right now. But the idea of a horror movie character leaving the movie, in conjunction with the setting of a theater should make for a perfect horror movie. It should have inspired the people involved to make something great. However, other than that idea everything possible is wrong with this movie. You can toss just about everything but that idea. There are a few small moments where you think the movie might turn out ok. A couple of crude jokes and scenes. And at times the actors seem to be having fun. There is a theater girl who does a good job with little dialog. I think she's fairly popular from a few other shows. But other than those small moments, it uses standard and even the worse type of horror stuff. The actors, villain, set design, all of it aren't used in the best possible way. Perhaps you can blame the setting on the budget. The actors are the only people in the theater. No extras at all. So the theater is vacant except for the people who will be killed. Slashers are usually known for bumbling cops. But this movie has one of the worst cops I've ever seen. And the actor plays it straight too which is the worst part. The movie even has a few unneeded twists at the end. I don't know why either. It doesn't do anything for the character's growth or give you an uneasy feeling like the end of good horror movies. Instead of twists the movie could have explained how the events were happening. There is a good scene when a cop shows up at the theater and can't see or hear the people inside. But the people can see him. The idea is solid but the whole setup is never fully explained. Not that it needs to be fully explained but it would have been better than the stupid twists. In a way, this is the perfect horror movie for a remake. Using the same idea with a better budget and actors.

SOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was directed by Spike Lee. The cinematography and directing work are good, lead actor Josh Brolin is good... it's just the story parts and logic are preposterous. One knows when a film is trying to be taken seriously, and what parts seriously; and when that's unsuccessful, it can be disastrous.
The ending climax, which is the big reveal of the film, is about the worst offense: the antagonist Adrian locks up the alcoholic anti-hero Joe for 20 years because Joe told everyone at school Adrian's sister was screwing her father in the school green house. She commits suicide. Adrian's father was sleeping with his daughter, wife & Adrian. And when it comes out, he shoots his family & self to death, but Adrian survives.
Adrian is rich, put Joe in locked room for 20 years, kills Joe's wife, & has Joe's baby daughter Marie raised by employees who would make Marie fall for a guy like Joe. Adrian releases Joe so that Joe will sleep with Marie who he doesn't know. When that happens, Adrian watches, tells Joe what he did... this is revealed as Adrian's goal, Adrian thinks Joe now understands what Adrian went through, and Adrian can kill himself in peace now. Say wha?
Does Adrian believe he lives after death, or otherwise he could have just killed himself DayOne to end his distress... Does Adrian think this 20 year-in-the-making incestuous encounter sets him up well for peace after suicide? Sure, he's insane, people are irrational creatures, still doesn't make the film satisfying.

Has some decent jumpy scares and plenty of action in the last 15-20 minutes, but I thought the teenage angst bit was stretched a bit too much, and the film lost some of it's scariness due to this factor alone. The ending felt rushed and a ton of things were "explained" using unnecessary flashbacks, which could have been unfolded earlier and that could have helped the film to stick to it's original plotline. As things stood, this ended up being a teen film for the most part, with a horror twist/cameo thrown in.
A decent watch, but not very impressed.

"Actual footage" together with dramatisation was an interesting concept. Worked on some levels. Was expecting much more from the story, or something more daring. Instead I found it rather simple and formulaic. The "UFO crowd" would likely find it old and shallow. Horror fans today would likely find old hat and cliche. Pacing and acting were fine.

Tonight I watched Wolf Creek (2005) in preparation for watching the sequel. It's the first time I'd seen it since it first came out, when I saw it in the theater. I'll admit, it was more shocking the first time, but still gritty and suspenseful on second viewing. Mick Taylor is a memorable bad guy, and adds some black humor to the mix. A good watch and solid entry in the redneck subgenre. 7/10.

THE RAVEN (2012). John Cusack plays Edgar Allan Poe in his final days helping a Baltimore detective solve brutal killings based on Poe's stories. Good attention to detail, but we felt it had a FROM HELL (2001) and SE7EN (1995) vibe to it. ***
Ever since reading "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Cask of Amontillado" in Junior High, have loved Poe and find him so tragic. Tried a few times to visit his grave when I lived in Maryland, but panhandlers/deadbeats ruined my quiet experience. "The Poe House" is in an area of the city where you would not dare park your car. Richmond VA has its own "Poe House" that is very good with many exhibits/artifacts and well worth a road trip.

Decent effort for a found-footage film. Some parts overzealous, some wonderful. One particular stand-out sequence involves a POV shot through darkness, of an encounter with a S.W.A.T. team, done really well.
Leaves you with plenty of questions but then these films try to entertain without taxing the brains much. Recommended if you love these kind of films.

Have it my net queue. Love the premise. Good to hear it's worth viewing (your 3 stars).
Cusack tends to do these films well. He's quietly created a horror-thriller niche for himself, to go along with his artsy-comedy-romance roles.

A good, tense low-brow indie effort ruined by an eye-roller of an ending. They should have just gone with the home invasion/haunted angle instead.
BTW, Elizabeth Olsen has nice boobs. You can't help but stare at them for the most part of the film.

Standard romantic tale which (I could swear) finds it's inspiration from Bollywood love stories of yore, but it's actually a remake of the 80s Brooke Shields tale. Gabriella Wilde is hot, while Bruce Greenwood & Robert Patrick provide ample support. Recommended to romantics, and to those who would want to warm their hearts with a smile on a gloomy, bad day.

THE THING (2010). Don't normally care for sequels (or prequels in this case( as they don't use logic or imagination, but we found this a very pleasant surprise. REALLY good tale of the events before the Carpenter film at the Norweigan's camp. The filmmakers did their homework, because everything wraps up. The FX are top notch, it's scary and downbeat enough and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is lusciuos::love::::love::::cool::. ****

Someone is copycatting Edger Allen Poe's macabre stories in real life, and a detective wants Edger to tag along to the murders and play: "Poe' Books for $200". Sounded like a good premise, if not a little familiar... but is actually a true insult to Poe the writer... as the story/plot/directing/acting are so cautiously safe & cliche, as to be a bore. One Cliff Notes movie to rip the guts out of all his best stories.
I was intrigued by the first 10 minutes, feeling cheerful in the familiar setting, waiting for the coaster to dive down the tracks... only to find the story inching along as if waiting in a long line. I was begging for it to wrap-up so I could go to sleep. 5/10 stars

Too cliched, too many loopholes and too many unexplained twists. By the time the film tries to be scary, it has already failed. And a final sequence which is just unwarranted.

Hatchet III -
I liked the first Hatchet. I had very few problems with it if I remember correctly. I didn't like part 2 as much. I can't remember why. Part 3 is about equal to part 2. It's just not as fresh as the original.
The Hitcher (Remake) -
I want to watch the original again. There is a twist in this movie that I can't remember in the original. But I think this is the best of the remakes from that studio. They all have the same look to them. And at times the same feel. I thought I was in for another crap movie. They even throw in the usual redneck character which they almost implied was messing around with his donkey. But Sean Bean makes this a movie worth checking out. He plays a good crazy man.
The actress who plays the perfect college girl in the movie is hot too. I've never seen her in anything before.

I was so excited for this and unfortunately i was disappointed. I guess it's not terrible. I loved The Owlman design and the scenes with him in it but the story was unnecessarily complicated and instead of crafting an interesting mythology for The Owlman, they spent way too much time focusing on the lame romance between the two leads. The acting was pretty bad especially from the female lead who overacted like crazy every scene she was in. But the male lead's ridiculous reactions weren't any better. There were too many scenes that dragged on way too long and for no reason and came off as incredibly silly which really took you out of the rare occasions the movie attempted to build up a scary atmosphere. Wouldn't really recommend this one.

This was better than Lord of Tears but it wasn't great. There were so many questions unanswered, many things didn't make any sense and it wasn't very scary. The story and the acting weren't bad and i can't say i was bored. Watch this if you have nothing else to do.

Once again this was not what i expected. I thought this would be more of an evil computer type movie but that was not at all what this was. There really wasn't any clear cut hero or villain and the AI really only did one thing wrong that if it had stopped doing, things would've been fine and it really didn't seem like it was too important to it. Were supposed to feel like the AI is evil and that it should be destroyed but there is no reason to believe that at all. The acting was okay although Johnny Depp seemed to phone it in. Paul Bettany was pretty good but Morgan Freeman didn't have nearly enough to do here. I hated the ending.

I think this is one of the few films that actually lives up to the media hype. This movie is non-stop suspense. Sandra Bullock has some of the worst luck in outer space.
The Colony (2013)
I checked this out because of Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton. In a post apocalyptic world devastated by an ice age what's left of humanity survives in underground colonies. When they answer an SOS call from their neighboring colony they discover almost everyone killed by a pack of cannibals. Although the basic premise is familiar there were some genuinely tense scenes. The Colony (SLIGHT SPOILERS) -
Someone here reviewed this movie. I don't think they liked it that much. I didn't think it was a horrible movie. In fact it's setup pretty well. They got strong actors. Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton are in it. I like the setting. I'm always looking for good horror movies in a winter setting. It has some nice shots of the various snowed over areas. I think where the movie lacks creativity is in the horror monsters. They aren't really explained and very generic modern horror monsters. Laurence Fishburne's character mentions how he saw people acting like animals or something but never that this is what he saw. A lot of people dislike the movie Doomsday. But that movie did more with the idea of cannibals and people acting crazy. In The Colony it's like they are like that because the movie needs horror monsters. So of course the main bad guy is big, bald, almost unstoppable, and has sharp teeth. Generic. I thought the funniest scene was the bridge scene. If anyone has a classic flip Zippo lighter you know how fast the fluid runs out in those.

A fascinating, in-depth insight into, what could have been, THE sci-fi film of the millenium, and much, MUCH bigger than the Star Wars franchise. The mind boggles by all the concept art and ideas which Jodorowsky & team had conjured up for their never-made cult classic, and it's a shame we never got to see the end result. Would have kicked Lynch's version's ass for sure.
Highly recommended, specially to the fans of the books.

Lynch's Dune got a cold reception. I really liked it. Of course not saying it was a one of the best all-time, but I was never riddled with 'how it could have been better'. Can't include everything in a novel into a film.
I didn't read the book. The 'readers of the book that becomes the film' are usually the harshest viewers. I didn't find the 2000 TV mini-series with William Hurt more enjoyable. With 4.5 hours, I'm sure it was "more faithful" and inclusive to the book.

ABOMINABLE. 2006
A killer sasquatch terrorizes a group of young women in one cottage while a paraplegic watches helplessly from his cottage next door.
Some sasquatch are huge but gentle and just want to be left alone. This one was cruel and actively sought out victims to eat. Its face was horrible with strange very wide-set eyes.
The film had more of a "made for tv" feel to it.

To my surprise it actually had a few effective scares. An alright B-horror/comedy.
And it didn't take itself seriously, either. Some of these newer movies put out buzz for weeks as to how terrifying they are and then its like..so so.

So I watched another movie on Netflix this morning called 'Ironclad' made in 2011, a pretty neat midieval castle siege movie. Simple setup and plenty of action, and rather high production values. Surprisingly bloody too, considering the prestige of the cast like Charles Dance, Kate Mara, Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, Derak Jacobi, and others. Gorehounds would love this movie. I had not heard of it before seeing it up on netflix and I am surprised a movie like this isn't better known.

So far most of the movies about the 'Big Foot' legends sucks. The whole idea about the big foot I think no longer remains much terrifying or creepy anymore. And here again, I just didn't see the point of why Mr. Goldthwait was even interested at the first place to make a found footage flick about that tired & old legend of the woods?! I've no complain here about 'zero screen time of the creature' as I wasn't expecting that at all or I knew.."come on...this is a movie about BF, and in most of the movies they never dared to reveal it properly!"::stick out tongue::

Geriatric action at it's finest. And now joined by fresh blood, too!
Banderas is an absolute hoot. Snipes has a great entry. Gibson makes for a very convincing baddie, better than Van Damme in the previous film. Wonderful to see Robert Davi in a nice little cameo. The rest of the crew are there and doing what they do best - kick some serious ass! And when Ford, Schwarzenegger and Li join them to take out an army, you know you got some serious explosions in store!
A wild, quickfire roller-coaster ride. Recommended to all fans of the action heroes of yore.

Caught this last night and was amazed how much I liked it (then again it could have been the cider or further proof of my brain damage).
The first one failed because they just turned it into a typical home invasion film. This was a lot better as we got to see more of the big picture. When I first heard of the concept I wanted to see the Purge as a threat from the inside - have it show coworkers, family and friends turn on each other (and we did get to see a bit of this).
I would have liked to see the results of a failed purge too. It would be funny having to deal with a coworker who tried to murder you in a previous event.
If they do another one they need to go full exploitation and up the violence and embrace the grindhouse spirit.

I liked it too, and definitely better than the first one. I enjoyed the original, but all the goofy twists made it a bit hard to take seriously, and it wasn't really trying to be tongue-in-cheek, as far as I could tell.
The sequel had a lot more to work with, situationally, and I think they did a good job of taking advantage of it. It covered a variety of scenarios and had a number of sociological comments to make, much like a George A. Romero film. It was good to see Omar from The Wire as the revolutionary leader. Overall, it was just more fun.
I agree, a third entry ought to embrace the concept for the exploitative concept that it is. On paper, it ought to be sheer insanity, but the result on screen is much more tempered. I'd like to see it go off the rails.

Watched it yesterday (not for the first time... I watch one movie per day). I'd say it was marginally better than the first one. I loved the cinematography and twist ending, and the acting was better than the first one. I especially liked how the movie had sort of two plots going on: the plot with Detective Matthews and Jigsaw and the captives inside the gas house. It sort of saved itself from being a generic torture porn movie.

One of the finest films of it's era, and one of Burton's best.
The infallible, never-say-die spirit of the worst director of horror cinema (or cinema in general) is perfected to the T by Depp's towering performance, Bill Murray shines in a role tailor-made for him, Sarah Jessica Parker and Patricia Arquette play their muse roles to near-perfection, and Lisa Marie makes for a delectable Vampira.
But I thought the film belonged completely to Martin Landau's Bela Lugosi. Landau captures the essence of Lugosi in his last days, an ageing, forgotten superstar who yearns for the spotlight one final time, despite his long drug addiction getting the better of him. You can feel his melancholiness, his despair, his legacy of being THE Count, and his larger-than-life presence. An Oscar well-deserved, sir. Hats off!

I watched "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" today, and it was absolutely awful. I liked how they took it as a sort of courtroom drama, but that caused problems as well. There was no time to develop Emily Rose at all. Right off the bat, she's possessed, and I don't care about her because I know nothing about her. Also, the acting was subpar, the cinematography was somewhat annoying (lots of shaky cam), and it was never scary. For the most part, Emily Rose was either hallucinating about people's faces contorting (oooh scary) or practicing her Cirque du Soleil routine.

Personally I didn't have a problem with them not developing Emily's character because I didn't see this movie as an exorcism movie where its all about the possessed and what they're going through. It was more of a religion vs. Science debate told through a horror movie and a courtroom drama. Emily's ordeal was just the backdrop and so it wasn't too important to focus on her.

The point I'm making is that, because I know nothing about her, I don't care about her being possessed, whether she was killed or not, or whether the guy was guilty or not. I'm not really asking for like 45 minutes to build up her character because in the Exorcist, Regan spent most of her time possessed but she did have some development at the beginning of the movie, making me care about her more than if there was no development. I get your point, but I think it would have made it more effective if we knew more about her.

the point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't matter if you care about her or not.the possessed girl isnt important in this story because it's not about her and it's not about her possession. It's about the priest and science vs religion and whether or not he was wrong to perform an exorcism. in the Exorcist it was important that you cared about Regan's character because it was about her and her possession. We needed to like her and care about her. its not the same for this movie. But that's just my opinion

Well obviously it was made as a horror movie for entertainment purposes. Exorcisms are scary and a frequent basis for horror so naturally it makes sense to make it a horror movie to showcase the exorcism parts. But not only that, a horror movie can and frequently does have deeper meanings and a point to make.
You said the movie wasn't good because they didn't develop Emily's character. I was just saying I disagreed with your review because I didn't think it was important to develop her character because it wasn't important to the movie. Like I said, just my thoughts.

Thought it won't be half as bad as the reviews.
Well, the audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes STILL isn't as low as Hellraiser:Revelations. Ik still trying to find of that's lower than 5%.

Pretty epic in it's scale, but it somehow doesn't come off as an Aronofsky film, neither does it allude much to the Bible's tales of the Ark and it's famous creator.
Fans of CGI would have a ball, but for the ones growing up on story-telling and performances, not much to see here. Everyone pretty much sleepwalks through most of the film, which lays more stress on the dramatics and less on interactions. Too bad.

"Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead" 8-9/10
More comedy and less horror compared to the first one, but just as good. I was laughing my ass off several times. To me both movies are very clever horror and comedy wise. Totally a fan of this director and his crew, altho it's only for this franchise. The rest i've seen is either not very good or too low budget and cheesy to be really enjoyable.

"Father's Day" 6-7/10
Speaking of cheesy.
How many dicks can there be in 1 movie? A lot. It's Troma.
The cover alone made me think of "Hobo With a Shotgun" and actually it wasn't far from it. Just crazier and lamer.
The Story: A priest, a homo and a hobo goes on a hunt for a disgusting fat fella who rapes and eats dads. Jup, but that's just the first half. Then the writers ran out of their medication... The ending was hilarious.

"The Signal" (2014) 5/10
A very slow moving syfy thriller with Laurence Fishburne playing his usual calm old self. Seriously, has there been a movie since King of New York where Fishburne hasn't played the role as Morpheus??
Oh well, the movie does have a big twist ending, but at that time that just isn't enough to make it all worthwhile.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Kasper_76/undertheskin_zpsce85037d.jpg
"Under the Skin" 5/10
The days in the life of a man-eating alien.
Very Kubrick indeed. Just not the good Kubrick. This is more like "Eyes Wide Shut" Kubrick, which I personally really, really disliked.
From beginning to end this artsy experience moves in snail pace, with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role having half as many lines as Ryan Gosling did in Drive. The movie does have a couple of nice "horror" scenes, tho both are within the first 35 minutes.
But if you wanna see Scarlett Johansson naked, this is certainly the movie for you. ;) ::love::

Underwhelmed for some reason. Maybe it's because of the nosedive the film took in the second half. There was a nice horror/sci-fi angle mid-story the makers could have exploited, if they had went in that direction. Instead, virtuousness wins and the film becomes so-so. Even the Lawnmower Man angle could have been good, but it was not to be.
This could have been a good 60s/70s film with Vincent Price in the lead, but it doesn't come off as a Depp vehicle. Both him and Burton need something fresh (like Ed Wood or Sleepy Hollow) to get back into the groove.

Prowl (SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR THIS MOVIE AS WELL AS THE COLONY, THE DESCENT, AND HIGH TENSION) -
I saw part of this movie originally on Syfy. The characters were in the back of a trailer truck. I thought it looked fun so it went on my list. Little did I know how dumb the setup to get to that scene would be. I had some deja vu from the last movie I reviewed here, which was The Colony. Prowl is one of those movies that feels like it got ideas and scenes from other movies. The monsters are very close to the modern generic vampire seen The Colony and other movies. And I try not to call directors hacks, uncreative, or anything else. But this movie is one of those where you just see why those terms are used. The movie starts with a scene similar to High Tension with the character running. It was a good scene in High Tension even though I still say the twist doesn't make sense in that movie. It could be a good scene in Prowl. The lead actress does a lot of running. But many of these scenes are too artistic, pretty blonde girl running though the fields, and should be darker. Perhaps have the sky getting darker behind her. As she's running from her nature. At least that's what I got from the first scene.
There is a good movie here, it just required more thought and care. The lead actress gives a strong performance despite all the other junk going on. It's like everything that made The Descent a good movie they took out and did the opposite. Where The Descent developed characters in the beginning so you knew their names and cared about them. Prowl just makes the characters stereotypes. There is a funny review of this movie on IMDB. They mention and give names to all the stereotypes and notice that only the "token ethnic" was missing. And it's true. The other characters are wiped out so quickly it's just an "oh well" when it happens. The Descent also decided not to do something in the early hospital scene. Well Prowl does the opposite and does it in the main character's bedroom scene. She is only person given any attention in the movie too. But at times even her situation doesn't make much sense. She's leaving or running away from home. From a dead end job in a small town and a Mother that drinks herself to sleep and ends up passed out on the floor. But are you so desperate to leave that you'll really take a ride in the back of a trailer truck? Also when one of her friend's is so well off that his parents have a large home with a pool that they couldn't wait and find another apartment in the city for her to take? Doesn't make any sense. So instead of being smart like The Descent and with a good although scary twist, Prowl ends up being stupid people, make stupid mistakes, and run into generic vampires. And at the end the people in charge seemingly have the nerve to ask to make a sequel.
* This movie does have one other good thing besides the lead actress. It has one of the best cheesy lines I've heard in a horror movie in a while. "Can't you feel the dark energy in here?"
Wes Craven's New Nightmare on Elm Street (I think that's what it's called) -
This is the first time I've seen this movie. I was going to watch all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies together. But I figured since this one really isn't part of the others and it's up for free, I'll check it out. I think at the start I kind of liked it because it has Nancy. Yes I said Nancy because I think most see Heather Langenkamp as Nancy even though in this movie she's supposed to be her real self. Except for at the twist. I can see how this movie influenced Scream with the real people aware of horror movies. The movie was ok for a while until movie Freddy showed up at a talk show to make him even more of the joke he's become in modern Nightmare movies. Also once the references to the classic movies started appearing it became a game of spot the reference shot, death scene, or actor cameo. It just wasn't that scary or "new." The wiki has a quote that the Freddy in this movie is supposed to be "darker and less comical." But he still does similar stuff as the original and isn't as scary as the original. I just don't know why this movie was made.
The Devil's Curse (also called Credo) -
I watched this because an actress that was in The Descent and Doomsday starring in it. I guess it an ok movie. A decent watch during dinner. Nothing great. They do use a twist that should never be used. Ever. There was one movie that did it that I can't remember. Thankfully. That movie sucked because of the twist. Devil's Curse actually makes the twist work a bit in that if you were paying attention, small clues were left during the movie. And something a character does has to have a payoff other than him being desperate geek. However, I still think the twist is a bad thing to do. As soon as it happened, I shouted "No" at the screen. Because it's really cheap and will make you angry.
ATM aka Jason Lives at the ATM (or any dumb area that should be secure in a public area but isn't for this movie) -
Start off with the good. Alice Eve. She looks her best in this movie. Usually I just find her pretty but in this movie she jumped up a few levels. She looks a lot better here than in that poor Star Trek Wrath of Khan remake - Star Trek into Darkness. She's the only character you might care about in this mess.
That's is, everything else about this movie is bad. No logic at all. I'm glad this failed at the box office. Back to Alice Eve for a second. The guy who finally gets to go out with her character parks far away from the ATM to punish his idiot friend who tagged along. Now what guy when he's alone with a beautiful girl would then leave her in the car, at night, far away from the ATM. No logic. He would honk, flash the headlights, drive up to the ATM, honk again, and rev the engine. The last thing a guy would do is leave the girl far away from the ATM and alone in his car. Just not happening.
Also, Alice Eve plays a shy girl. Yes a woman as beautiful as her is supposed to be shy. Totally not believable. I have never met a beautiful girl that is truly shy. Never. Unless it's an act and they are the Kim Kardashian type and most know what she is. And sadly I've met that type before. Remember this - FOUL LANGUAGE WARNING.
-k6wRb8SkIg
I saw this when I was young and didn't get it. I thought he was talking about a horror movie when he mentions ravens and graveyards. But he's talking about past activities. Anyway, ATM also adds the usual horror tropes. Incompetent police force, minority rent a cop, "I'll be right back" to signify the horror is about to start. Midway through the movie it becomes a bit of a comedy then goes back to supposed horror.
Please anyone who hasn't seen this movie, even if it's free, don't watch it. Totally not worth the time. You can search for Alice Eve ATM pictures and see how pretty she is. No need to watch this mess.

"Lucy" 7-8/10
Luc Besson's newest high paced action flick starring Scarlett Johansson as Geena Davis in The Long Kiss Goodnight, Morgan Freeman as Morgan Freeman and Min-sik Choi (mr. Oldboy) as the bad guy.
The story is downright brilliant, but the whole thing could and should've been executed better. Maybe the movie needed to be an hour longer, I don't know. I just feel that I didn't get to see enough of Johansson's capabilities in between changing/advancing.

This had got pretty terrible reviews but I really enjoyed it. James Franco directs this low budget Southern Gothic tale about a Hill billy corpse fucker who has perfect teeth but poor toilet hygiene.
