Ender's Game (2013)
9/10

In near future, a high-military IQ boy is recruited to Battle School by the International Fleet to be trained to defeat an anticipated second attack on Earth from an Alien race.

If you like the plot, much better idea to read the excellent 324 page short novel, published 1985, of the same name, which won both the 1985 Nebula Award and the 1986 Hugo Award for best novel.

Excellent adaptation of the novel. Hits on the important plots and characters judiciously. Supreme special effects without being at all gaudy or excessive.

Very true. I watched it with my undivided attention, and it's a mildly entertaining escape film. The cinematography is nice looking and effective. The general plot and setting are primo. So it's hard to screw this up. But both The Thing (1982) especially, and even Thing From Another World (1951), cast a long shadow over this film, and the fans were not happy with how shallow this was. And really, actor Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as Kate Lloyd, does such a great job, she saves this film... to the mild level it reaches. The film lost money (Budget: $35 mil, Boxoffice $32). As we see so often, it was a missed opportunity.

I wish Mary Elizabeth Winstead made an original horror movie instead of that Thing remake. I still haven't seen those Cloverfield movies and I'm looking forward to the second and third ones. Also she's in a remake of a French zombie revival type TV show that I'll check out eventually.

The Gift (2015) (on netflix)
7/10

"A young married couple's lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the (Jason Bateman) husband's past brings mysterious gifts and a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years." - IMDB

Not a bad time-waster. If you're looking for a mild psychological thriller that is a little different from the normal black-and-white good-guys-Vs-bad-guys, you might like this. This is not action-packed, and is more of a slow-burn in regards to suspense. I found the ending interesting, but not at all satisfying. The grey areas created in the main characters' moralities didn't amp-up the suspense or pace, rather it seemed to convolute.

That's funny... I just heard story on NPR about this film... mostly about just how much silence is in the movie -- as the hook in the news story said, 'so quiet you can hear each crunch of popcorn'.

Film is doing well, getting good reviews.

Seems to me I remember some film had the same theme of having to be silent to avoid monsters... but nothing specific comes to mind. ::confused::

Those two movies are very different in many ways.

There’s a lot of “why’s” in A Quiet Place. No traps. No fighting back. People has just adjusted to these very limited but deadly creatures. And where did they come from, I have no idea.

I need more people to watch this movie so we can discuss it.

Remake Bub does bear a resemblance to original Bub and the top soldier does have a bit of Rhodes' tone in him.

The major difference would probably be that the general tone of the film is the tone of this generation, with for example a bit of metoo thrown in the mix as well.

The story, set in a dystopian 2040s, follows protagonist Wade Watts on his search for an Easter egg in a worldwide virtual reality game, the discovery of which will lead him to inherit the game creator's fortune.

Excellent film. Lots of fun. Has plenty of action, cool special effects, as well as tons of references to pop culture going way back, let's just say to the 1980's especially, including a very funny long sequence involving The Shinging (1980), but well grounded into the story and characters. Well directed by Steven Spielberg. Based on a 2011 novel by Ernest Cline.

The Collector (2009)
4/10

A victim who escaped the clutches of a serial killer agrees to help mercenaries recover a women who has been kidnapped by the same serial killer. The serial killer must be rich like Batman, because, his hideout is huge, and he has tons of expensive equipment, and about 50 live victims and hundreds of dead ones. I know, it sounds like a good premise, but it's totally hack.

I often like to say... if the viewer of the film "The Collector" has never seen a movie before, or hasn't seen a lot of horror films, they would probably appreciate it more than me. This film has a budget, but not the remotest hint of something new. It's totally hack. Hack can be done well, however, but I certainly wouldn't say this was done well, it's merely competent. It was hard to watch the entire film, but it did manage to keep me curious, but not in an enjoyable way.

I'm a football fan, but I wasn't as impressed as I hoped. It was mildly entertaining, and competently created. I don't think we get know any of the characters in more than a superficial way. And the events are completely conventional. Put those two things together, and it's just another day.

Trolls.
Well, it was colourful enough to attract the attention of my kid who actually sat and watched an entire movie for the first time.
I dunno...wasn't horrible, though didn't really feel like it was covering any kind of new ground. Few funny lines. I liked the textures. The music choice was pleasingly eclectic.
It was "ok".

I started on the new GhostBusters.
Can't say I really like it.
It's not about chicks vs guys...though yeah, it might be a little bit about *those* chicks vs *those* guys?
It's a bit too "all comedy all the time", and every character just felt too overdone, like they were all completely cartoon characters.
The ghost effects are alright. The overall storyline is like...kinda mush...
We're about half way through right now and haven't turned it on again in three days, I guess that says a little bit about it.
I won't sit here drawing comparisons and insulting it too much, but I will say it kind of feels like a movie that if I see it through, I won't really bother with again.

I saw Sausage Party and I give it a 9/10. I know a lot of people hate that movie but I couldn't help but love it. As an atheist I really appreciated this movie's less-than-subtle message about all religions being BS and as somebody who despises all of these recent (and mediocre) kid-friendly CGI movies by Pixar and Dreamworks I was glad to finally see a CGI movie that would make parents feel ashamed to ever let their children watch it. I also thought the way that this movie mocked different stereotypes with different food products was comedic genius.

So yeah, I love this movie and I'm not ashamed to admit it. ::smile::

What gave you that idea? All I got from it that would come close to religion or anti-religion would be when they are eaten or used (in douches case) is they die. How does that mock religion in the least bit? Religious or non-religious , it doesn't change the fact that everything dies. I too am an atheist and your claim makes no sense to me.

Um... Because all of their beliefs about the "Gods" (shoppers) were basically wrong and they all ended up dying in the "great beyond"? Also because none of the food items could agree on anything or get along because of their religious differences? They even mocked how the Nazis tried to commit genocide on the Jews (the "saurekraut" singing about exterminating the "juice").

I think it's pretty blatantly obvious that this movie was mocking religion and expressing how it thinks that most of the world's problems come from people refusing to abandon their religious beliefs or accepting each other's differences.

But I really don't feel like arguing about religion so I'm just going to leave my point at that.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
6/10

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c8/Wes_Craven%27s_New_Nightmare_US_poster.jpg

The dangerous evil of Freddy Kruger begins to make his way out into the lives of those who worked on the horror films that had once contained him.

Maybe one had to see this film in 1994 to appreciate it... I found the film extremely predictable, and very old hat, especially the ending... of which I will say, without any spoilers: the protagonists go where you know they will go, it will look exactly like you'll expect, Freddy will do what you expect and have seen many times before, and it will end exactly the way you think it will end.

I didn't think it was scary, as it's hard to take Freddy seriously at this point -- or at that point in 1994. And the film was never funny, which I found a bit ironic; but it was sometimes suspenseful. I liked the concept of the film -- and we hear this concept espoused word for word by the writer/director in a "cameo" appearance, 'An evil force, in the form of Freddy, was contained and controlled in the films about this monster, but now that no one is afraid, Freddy is breaking out.' Unfortunately, this concept did not go in any unexpected directions.

Dagon ( 2002 )

The plot centers around two couples on vacation, whose ship suddenly runs aground off the Spanish coast and one of the women becomes trapped below deck as the boat begins to take on water. Our male and female leads take a boat to a nearby fishing village to seek help, only to discover that the townsfolk have been enthralled by something that is slowly turning them into blasphemous abominations. Something evil... Something ancient... Something from the deep. And it wants it’s tribute.

Probably my favorite Stuart Gordon/Lovecraft outing next to Re-Animator, and one of the more true to form adaptations ( even though it’s more like a reimagining of The Shadow Over Innsmouth as opposed to Dagon... Cuz Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna never seem to get the titles to match the screenplays for some god damn reason ). Arguably one of the most faithful films in regards to the source material and it’s mythos. Dagon nails the nightmarish, otherworldly, and warped atmosphere of one of Lovecraft’s tales, while mixing in Stuart Gordon’s signature style with some impressive practical creature/gore effects. The story borrows heavily from the original narrative, while also changing enough to keep it from being a straight up adaptation, is more engaging than I expected, and I felt the twist and ending were well executed. My only real complaints are standard fare for most low budget foreign flicks. The dubbing can be a little hokey and distracting at times which can detract from the overall dark and serious tone, and the few CG effects are clearly unpolished or not finished ( but thankfully they are both brief and sparse ).

Overall, I’d highly recommend this one to fans of both Stuart Gordon and Lovecraft respectfully. As well as anyone looking for a creepy little creature feature with decent effects and an interesting, cult themed, story. Also, fans of horror themed games should check this one out, as the original story and this film inspired the level design and enemies in games like RE4, Bloodborne, and by far the most intense ( and my personal favorite ) part of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

Orphan (2009)

I give it a 3/10. That was the stupidest horror movie I have seen in recent years and I don't understand why so many people liked it. The plot twist was so absurd and you could see it coming from 10 miles away, and I didn't like how Esther was portrayed as another evil Russian stereotype especially when a lot of the "innocent" American characters around her were less likable than she was. Like you had her adoptive brother who told her to go back to Transylvania because he thought she was a freak (and not only was he too stupid to realize that she was from Russia but that Transylvania isn't even a country and somehow her pointing out his ignorance made her more evil), you had the little elementary school ***** who tried to bully her just because she wore a dress to school instead of jeans like all the other "normal girls" (I think that brat deserved to get pushed off a slide and break her leg I felt no sympathy for her at all), and then you had her adoptive parents themselves who are getting their freak on right in the middle of the kitchen with their kids upstairs... Yeah, I hated every character in this movie!

I watched it years ago on the SciFi channel and I thought it was pretty good too. It did kind of remind me of the game Resident Evil 4 as well as another horror game called Siren. Both games were about a cult village where the residents turned into monsters just like in this movie. Maybe those games were inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft too?

The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey (2012)
7/10

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b3/The_Hobbit-_An_Unexpected_Journey.jpeg

A hobbit reluctantly agrees to be help some dwarves and a wizard journey to regain their home.

I hadn't seen this film since seeing it in the theatre in 2012. I remember coming to the end of the film, after 2 hours and 49 mins, being disappointed... why is the movie ending when the Hobbit never went into the mountain to grab the special stone! I had no idea this was going to be a three part series. The beginning of the film didn't tell me this was "part one of three". Un-met expectations can really hurt a review.

So now that I know it's in three parts, I tired to reassess the film. Really, the film has some very good segments, like the beginning meeting the dwarves, and the riddle-filled confrontation between Bilbo and Gollum. I think what hurts the film is a lack of defined purpose. We know what the group wants to do once they get to the mountain, but the film is entirely about the journey there; and so the film feels a but disjointed, like a string of isolated experiences along the way.

The key plot of the film is set up early when the wizard Gandalf says to the hobbit Bilbo, "You'll have a tale or two to tell of your own when you come back. And if you do... ...you will not be the same." The film was not entirely successful in demonstrating how Bilbo was changing. Bilbo became willing to risk his life for the cause, but I don't think we understand why.

All-in-all, it's a rich, interesting and oft visually stunning adventure, with some very entertaining moments and a fair degree of heart, but there's an undeniable lack of focus.

Except for the major characters, their development and the mandatory smattering of in-jokes and backwards referencing Marvel puts in absolutely everything?
Also some changes happened to some of the characters throughout these films, and a couple were introduced that will likely be seen in at least some way.

That said...While I wasn't in love with Ragnarok, it was a solid action title,

Homecoming (which annoys me that Spider-man is now in his third big screen incarnation and has still not left high school) for me was one of the best Spider-man films there has been. Not quite Spider-Man 2, but puts Spider-Man 3 and both of the "Amazing" titles absolutely in the dirt.
Michael Keaton fucking smashes his part as usual, and end up playing quite a well written version of a popular villain that you can actually sympathise with.
It's at very least, worth a hire - just my take but you're missing out if you don't see it.

The Mummy 2017 -

I finally watched this Mummy reboot and beginning (end) to the Dark Universe. What made me watch it was seeing Russell Crowe's recent auction of his movie items. Even though he was selling them he really seemed to love movies and stories behind the items. I decided it was time to see his performance in The Mummy.

I originally thought it would be an action movie and I wasn't surprised when that's what I got. What I was surprised by is that they thought this was the best way to start a Dark Universe and the odd comedic moments throughout the movie. Also the small hints to other classic Universal Monsters which I thought wasn't the best way to introduce them. Someone who truly likes these monsters could do so much more given the budget and a handful of movies to tie together. I just felt a lack of creativity and that it was a movie of action sequences with a few bits of dialog to explain the story as they progressed.

I thought the best thing was the plane sequence but Tom Cruise likes to do those real things for movies. We've seen the vomit comet in movies before but it's still a good scene in this movie. The lead actress is beautiful. I've seen her in a few movies and TV shows before. But this could have been a real timeless type role for her with a better director. I checked the official posters galleries and she didn't even make any of them which is disappointing. In fact you would think there would be some classic styled posters for the beginning of this series considering those notable old posters but I didn't see any. The actress who plays the Mummy is good but again with a better director and script she could be far better and iconic. I did like Russell Crowe's character. Perhaps it would have been better to start the whole series with him as his character felt the closest in style and atmosphere to the classic monsters.

Overall it was a letdown. It didn't really suck as it was entertaining as most Tom Cruise movies are. And I'm still a fan even though I don't think he'll ever make a movie better than Top Gun. But it just should have been so much better. I didn't care about the ending scene or feel the need to see more adventures of this type or the next entry in the Dark Universe.

I think Siren is on my list to play one day. Game designers are influenced by all kinds of stuff so it's possible they were reading or watching another Lovecraft movie. I think it was the original Resident Evil that was influenced by Night of the Living Dead. There is a stairway in that game that is straight from the Night of the Living Dead remake. And Resident Evil Code Veronica has that bit from a popular Hitchcock movie without spoiling it if you haven't played that one.

Ragnarok was mildly entertaining, I enjoyed it.

I think we have the same general tastes with Spiderman. Rami's Spiderman 2 was great. Rami's Spiderman was pretty good. I didn't like Spiderman 3, but it had some good moments. I didn't like The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, very passé and unoriginal, was like Twilight, that is reminded me of it, since I only ever watched 15 mins of Twilight.

The thing about Spider-Man: Homecoming is I don't think it added anything new to Rami's Spider-man… and I just didn't want to see all that again... and that's a killer to me. For me it was very forgettable, and I didn't think it had much heart. I like Keaton in the car scene at the end, other than that, to me the whole thing was either way way too familiar or fairly lame. Again, not saying it was a bad film, just old hat.

Solo: A Star Wars Story
7/10

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/54/Solo_A_Star_Wars_Story_poster.jpg

IMDB: "During an adventure into the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion."

It's fairly bland and unimaginative in general. The story picks up some momentum in the last 40 mins. It feels like the film must dutifully fill in the Star Wars Han Solo cannon (what the previous Star Wars story said happened).

The story makes a horrible blunder in taking on emancipation of robots... a ridiculous story and unwelcome diversion... which actually stumbles into being insulting to actual emancipation and civil rights movements of humankind. When the film made light of the droid wanting droid emancipation, because the droid was eccentric and delusional, it was funny, when the film turned to pickup the torch, it dropped everything.

Deadpool assembles a team to save a boy with supernatural abilities from a time traveling cyborg named Cable.

Deadpool continues to be a fairly creative and humorous superhero film, full of parody, breaking the 4th wall, and a cord of genuine heart and goodness. The heart and goodness still comes through, though not as convincing as needed, nor quite as heartfelt as the prior film. Deadpool's concern for the boy is underdeveloped.

I noticed Deadpool 2 makes a continuing joke where the Deadpool character mentions Cable as being "dark", and then peppers the film with Deadpool teasing Cable for being racist. The theatre audience was silent for almost every re-appearance of this bit, where otherwise there was plenty of laughter.

A character goes from "Do you think [this character] is really gay?" to "Will you marry me?" to "I need to go take a piss in the woods" in the space of a minute. Great lines, said unironically, like "Why does he have horse tranquilizers?". "Well he's not playing My Little Pony!"

Lonely residents of a tornado-stricken Ohio town wander the deserted landscape trying to fulfill their boring, nihilistic lives.

I expected it to go somewhere interesting but it never did. Some scenes were improvised, with 'actors' looking awkwardly towards camera for direction that never comes. And that sums up the movie, really. Everyone looking for direction that never comes. And while these strange people can be compelling, the story ultimately needs to go somewhere to be worthwhile. Extra points for some interesting work by Jean-Yves Escoffier as cinematographer.

Saw a couple documentaries on youtube…

Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance (1993)
8/10

Good documentary on the Oka Crisis that occurred 1990 in Quebec, Canada. Club de golf d'Oka, a golf course was going to add nine holes to the existing golf course, and luxury condos, further eliminating disputed lands of a Mohawk tribe community. Including background history, this is the story of their successful resistance. The lands awarded to the city of Oka included lands Mohawk cattle grazed and a Mohawk cemetery, but it's unclear if the new development intended to eliminate the cemetery.

The film won 18 Canadian and international awards, including the Distinguished Documentary Achievement Award from the International Documentary Association and the CITY TV Award for Best Canadian Feature Film from the Toronto Festival of Festivals.

There's an excellently created history of the lands near the 26 minute mark of the film. And I'd highlight from 26:30 to 42:50, where there's some expert doc film making in directing and editing regarding the background shots, sounds, transitions, and story telling.

Critiquing the film, I'd very humbly suggest the 2 hour runtime was unnecessary; as parts of the film, though chronological and oft vivid, were sometimes redundant in the story. I think there's a bit of viewer fatigue here, and a 90 minute film would have been more impactful.

Also, I was left a little unclear in certain specifics. Why was a 1986 the Mohawk claim to the federal Office of Native Claims, "rejected on the basis that it failed to meet key legal criteria"? Was it known if the developers were going to eliminated the cemetery? The film was released January 1993, but the ending of the film makes no mention that the developer's plans for expansion were cancelled. According to thecanadianencyclopedia.ca, during the crisis the Federal Government agreed to purchase the land from the developers for 5.3 million; and that "After the crisis had ended, the government purchased a number of additional plots of land for Kanesatake. However, these Crown lands have not yet been transferred to the Kanesatake Mohawk."

The War of 1812 (2011)
9/10

Excellent and entertaining documentary of the background and conduct of the War of 1812. It includes plenty of historical experts explaining the perspectives of the four main actors: United States, The Canadas, British Empire and Indian tribes; including war strategy, human impact and historical significance.

I watched the 2hr 33min version on youtube, where the creator edited out the commercials. PBS.org has the doc available for free viewing with a runtime of 1hr 53 mins, available in HD (https://www.pbs.org/video/the-war-of-1812-the-war-of-1812-full-program/). I'm not sure there's 40 mins of repetition in the youtube version; there's certainly recap at the TV break transitions, so maybe the PBS is truly a complete version.

The morning after a party, a young man wakes up to find Paris invaded by zombies.

I enjoyed the movie, but the character kept having to create drama for himself by inexplicably doing dumb, dangerous things, which seemed out of character to his regular survival instincts. Those moments were frustrating and seemed needless when the danger could easily have been more external. But it was well made and the zombies were good.

The Conjuring 2
7/10

IMDB: "Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising 4 children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit."

The film had some problems, I think many due to construction, as I feel there was some viewer fatigue with it's 2hr-14min runtime. The film opens with a segment from the Amityville (Horror) case, but I really didn't get how it related in any way to the rest of the film... certainly didn't seem to mesh well. At least the demon hunter Warren's got some face time, because it seems like a long, long time without them once the segment in London begins, which I think was rather weak.

Following along those lines, there's a demon nun that I was hard pressed to mesh with the London Enfield case, that is besides the fact the film just comes out and says it's following Mr Warren.

The London segment is actually from a famous case, called the Enfield Poltergeist. I found watching the actual local news and the psychical documentary film, from psychical researcher Maurice Grosse, to be more entertaining than Conjuring 2's pre-Warrens segment. Once the Warren's arrive, it's a bit more interesting and entertaining. But it's still just not as sharp as the first 3/4ths of the original The Conjuring.

I think the film would have benefitted by almost immediately featuring Maurice Grosse's research (based on the actual), who was played quite entertainingly by Simon McBurney. Then move the Warrens into town, and maybe even plot the two (Grosse and Warrens) against each other, and introduce a perceived fight for noteriety, which I think was the reality. Although we are to trust in the pure motives of the Warrens, I think it could have added an interesting conflict dimension.

Cure for Wellness -

I thought I posted about wanting to see A Cure for Wellness here after seeing the trailer. But I can't find that post. Anyway, after finishing the movie, I felt a bit disappointed. Perhaps even misled. I thought the movie would be a dark, psychological, lovecraft type horror movie. And at first it seemed like that. However, when a few other elements are introduced the movie became kind of jumbled for me. Like an odd horror fantasy movie mixed with old Universal Monsters type themes. But no where as good as it took far too long to get to the obvious twist if you could even call it that. This is a really beautiful movie to see though. I had to see if the locations were real as the early establishing location shots are incredible. The cast is pretty good too, it's just that the story lets them down. I thought from early on that this would be a movie I would own. But I don't even see myself watching this one again.

Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)
7/10

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2e/Pacificrim2-poster.jpg

Ten years after the giant robot task force sealed the alien invaders' portal, the alien's threaten again. This time a new entrepreneurial scientist, jockeying for power, has created giant drone robots to fight any new giant monsters that may come from a new alien portal. But is everything as it seems?

There's still some cool special effects and action, but the film is missing the heart, the resonating emotional depth of characters, of the excellent original Pacific Rim (2013). The new young characters are not compelling, and suffer from woefully undeveloped emotional background stories. Instead the draw is the old tired rebel teen angst background. The two films have different screenwriters and directors.

Robert Englund has had an interesting post-Freddy career. Sometimes his job is just to stand around and look creepy. Like on the episode of Bones where Dr. Brennan attends a high school reunion, and Englund plays the school's janitor. If course, his face was familiar from Nightmare on Elm Street, so you were supposed to believe he was the killer, even though he was an obvious red herring.

What did I just think of...I think I read somewhere that the way Freddy stood in Nightmare, that sort of crooked posture, was Englund's idea. It might be true. Adrienne Corri (Vampire Circus) said in an interview that the reason she loves to do horror movies even though her agent doesn't want her to, is because actors in horror movies often are allowed to have this kind of creative input.

I like this quotation so much I will throw it in even though I'm sure you guys know it already: "You think I'm mad, don't you?...Perhaps we're both mad." --Boris Karloff in "The Terror."

I recently watched Village of the Damned again. The John Carpenter version, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the original version that came out in the 1960's (this one was made in the 1990's).

I actually liked it. It was about a bunch of women in a small town who mysteriously give birth to these evil white-haired children after a blackout knocks everybody in the town unconscious. The children are highly intelligent, very cold and unemotional, and possess the ability to read people's minds. But their most terrifying power is the ability to make people commit grizzly suicide (usually they only do this when somebody threatens them) by controlling their minds with these glowing eyeballs. And of course the government gets involved and wants to study the children but things don't go too well for many of the townspeople and eventually they have to find a way to stop the children.

Anyways what I liked most about this movie (besides the concept of evil children murdering people like in Children of the Corn) was the fact that we never found out exactly what the children were. Were they aliens? A government experiment? Or maybe some sort of evolution of the human race? My favorite line in the movie that I think summed them up perfectly was when Mara told her father "You must be aware, in some basic sense, of exactly who... WHAT we are".

I just watched Leprechaun 2 on Hulu. I feel like the opening credits scene was genius, with the Leprechaun reading over his magic scroll showing the girl he wanted to make his bride and her line of descendants up until the most recent one being the leading female character of the movie. I loved how each sketch of the women showed them wearing various clothing that would have fit into Ireland's many time periods from the Medieval ages to the Renaissance to the Victorian era and then her great grandmother sailing for America with her grandmother dressed like a flapper and her mother dressed like a 1950's housewife. I thought it was awesomesauce. ::cool::

Terrifier (2017).

Well, I just saw this a little while after checking out "All Hallows Eve".
I thought both of them were ok.
This one felt a bit more like a "real" film than the loose almost anthology-esqe effort of the first one.
I don't find clowns scary.
I appreciated the more structured film this time around.
Loved that Art actually finds his murderous acts enjoyable and funny.
Though yeah I think it gets talked up a bit...I guess films like this don't come out too often so the style of yesteryear appeals.
I *hope* the twist was meant to be obvious?
I'd be interested in seeing something of an origin or explanation film...I have to admit it evoked some interest as to just how human Art was, or was not.
It's interesting enough I suppose. Felt a bit cheap and gritty though I imagine that was the intention.
All in all not bad, though I don't really find it all that deserving of the praise it seems to get thrown upon it.

Good example (to me) of a similar style of film would be CREEP from 2004, or MANIAC if you like throwbacks.

IT -

This was darker than I expected. But I'm looking forward to the sequel, watching the original mini series, and reading the book. The only thing I didn't like about the movie were some of the darker things going on with one of the characters and also the level of hostility of the mean kids. That was a bit too much. The movie almost felt like a horror version of Goonies. The clown is a great villian too. It's almost a perfect movie except for those bits that bothered me to the point where I wouldn't show it to young kids. Which is the strange part because you would think a movie staring kids should be for kids. But I just felt the movie could have been better without those aspects and I would probably put it in my collection then.

JOY RIDE (2001). Pretty good flick that plays a lot like a SUPERNATURAL episode: long road trip, vintage car, squabbling brothers, formidable villain, girl who proves invaluable and even Jim Beaver too! But, I don't think that Sam and Dean could be as DENSE as the two brothers here, especially Fuller, a most annoying SOB. Paul Walker is good here and sad remembering he died in a car accident while Jesse drives like a stock car racer. Early JJ Abrahms too. ***

Great opening scene but the teen angst/comic relief is overdone a bit but once shit gets going its all gravy. The best way to describe it is like a cross between Don't Breathe and The Loved Ones.

Don't let the corny poster fool you,

“Upgrade” 2018 8/10

Pretty damn good actually. Had kind of a “Saw” twist at the end. The writer/directors best movie since Saw.

It was quite a letdown for me... maybe my experience was hurt by my high expectations, hearing of good media company reviews. If I had listened to a competent friend, who said it was alright, my expectations would have been more in-line. I thought the film was technically competent, but the story never seemed to take any bold or innovative directions. It stayed very tepid.

100 bloody acres aka Tucker and Dale vs the city slickers.

Fun ride and good for a few laughs, so no reason to complain there.

I really wanted to see this film but it was very underwhelming. There was some here and there brutality that was nice to see{ a shovel beating to the face} but mostly redikkulus set ups and was not impressed with the crazy psychopath, I could do better.

Had my GF sit down and watch the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. Forgot how good it is, and it freaked her out nicely. Ah, the wonders of dating someone who actually gets scared ::love::
