Hereditary, 2018 - 9/10
Suspiria, 2018 - 7/10
Both rewatches. Suspiria is beautiful and for the most part engaging, but is let down by excessive time spent on side plots and historical context that in no way relate meaningfully to the main story.
Hereditary has, in my opinion, only one flaw, which is Gabriel Byrne's weak father character who seems very one dimensional for such a complex, thought through film.

Suspiria had me perplexed at first, but i loved the way that it pulled together as it went. the extraneous content may not have been there to support the plot but it very much added texture and pacing.

Ghostland (2018), directed by Pascal Laugier.
Based on the title, I expected a typical ghost story and I was wrong. There is an eerie tone present from the beginning that grabbed my attention. The story shows us how we can create different realities to ease the pain. It's surely disturbing and quite intense. I'm sorry for the actress, Taylor Hickinson, who was facially disfigured during the shooting and now is permanently scarred. However, I must say, her acting was convincing and it was one of the factors that makes this movie truly creepy and hopeless.

Terminator 2.
I've been showing my young lady these, we've got her to the point she'll actually sit through things, so why not.
She actually had her first like outright emotional response to a movie, of course, the thumbs up scene.
So anyway...if you haven't got it...I'd suggest a BluRay pick up right now.
The "Brand new Digital Restoration" one.
I'd seen a special edition directors cut thing before that had a couple of extra scenes thrown in.
This one comes with the "extended special edition" version.
For starters, from my childhood to now I still find this a phenomenal film that hit heights far higher than anything to follow it...It had been a good 8-9 years since I'd seen it last, so it was somewhat fresh again which was cool.
I don't need to throw in any more about this. It's Terminator 2.
Though yeah...the version we watched with the (even more) extra scenes integrated into the film was amazing. The stuff that was missing...I get how sometimes people hate directors cut versions or watch extras and go "I get it", and it's easy to see why some things get left out for pacing etc.
Not in this case.
Maybe it was a budget thing? Bit of both? Maybe considered "too much" for an action film? Who knows.
But the stuff is good.
There was even an alternate ending or, extra bit...which actually ends the movie, and franchise pretty well.
Maybe that's why they didn't go with it...
Anyhow look, if you like the movie, see this version.
I think it makes for a richer film experience and a slightly more emotionally weighted storyline.
Showing it's age a little to be sure, but it's still Cameron at his best.

Watched the new CHILDS PLAY.
I'd kind of dreaded it a little bit...the originals were something from my childhood that kind of stuck with me, well, at least the first two.
I'd heard a lot of negative stuff about this one - and didn't have a great deal of interest in seeing it, but saw that it was on Amazon and figured I'd check it out.
I thought it was ok.
It's definitely not as dark/mature in content as the original was, and there was a bit more emphasis on comedy.
Fair enough, that didn't make it shit, just different in tone.
On its own I think it's some competent entry level horror, and maybe that's what worked against it in perception...that they made it kind of attached to this franchise that it barely resembled aside from "there is a doll of some description".
I thought it was funny that the machine seemed to enjoy taunting people a little bit as well.
It's...yeah as I said above...it's ok.
It's not a bad film, and while I don't see anyone thinking it was better than the original, I'd caution not to judge too harshly prior to seeing it.
It was not un-enjoyable.
My only issue...the thing I found missing, was the thing it did differently.
There was no actual personality...it was just a malfunctioning unit, with a few personality traits that were part of the same malfunction.
There was...just...not enough evil...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
6/10
Seemed like required reading in Star Wars history. This stuff happens, it's in the Star Wars universe, it's homage to the originals. I was mildly curious to see what happens, but didn't care much, and it took two sittings. Just doesn't have much heart to it. People forget what Mark Hamill did for New Hope.
The Death of Stalin (2018) Netflix
8/10
The leaders of the Communist Party jockey for position after Stalin dies. It's an insightful funny parody. Folks with background knowledge will enjoy the most, it doesn't really hand-hold the audience for everything, which helps maintain the 4th wall. Cast includes Steve Buscemi, Jeffrey Tambor and Simon Russell Beale.
The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) Netflix
6/10
Kids find a book describing invisible creatures in the forest outside, and a mean creature wants to know the secrets in the book. This was hard to watch, as it's so banal. It's the movie you've already seen a million times with the names changed.
American Experience: Ruby Ridge (2017) 60mins Netflix
8/10
Very concise American Experience documentary on the Ruby Ridge incident. It covers what you need to know. It has first-hand interviews and actual footage without being slanted to one view. It's entertaining.

The Boy (2016), directed by William Brent Bell.
Finally, I managed to watch this movie as each previous attempt was a failure. I dunno why, at first I thought it would be boring and predictable. I've never been a big fan of the supernatural sub-genre so I approached The Boy with reluctance. Now I must say, the setting and the doll itself surely do a good job of creating the gloomy atmosphere. The plot twist was, if I may say so, quite smart and surprising... but I have the feeling that it was flawed in some ways. Overall, the movie was entertaining and refreshing and the sense of suspense and eeriness was maintained throughout the entire film, so I would recommend this dark movie to people who like "supernatural-like" flicks... as I can't help it was a little bit of a letdown for me personally. I mean, I wasn't bored but I also wasn't delighted. I know there's the second part, Brahms: The Boy II and I would willingly watch it, just out of curiosity.
Insidious (2010), directed by James Wan.
Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), directed by James Wan.
Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), directed by Leigh Whannell.
I watched it expecting some scares but nothing more... Wrong. It was surely scary (possible due to the loud music), but also intriguing. I simply like the character of Elise Rainier - such a fun woman (there's a better term, I suppose ::wink::). The third part looked quite cheap compared to the previous ones and was quite plain, IMO.

“Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpions Revenge“ 7-8/10
Animated.
Started out strong, with a brutal first half that had me believe nobody was safe, but later on, sadly, turned into the first Mortal Kombat movie, with one fight followed by the next. That would have been sweet had it been a live action movie, but as an animation it gets a bit repetitive and dull. BUT, it’s still a very well made animation with decent voice acting and a good potion of humor mixed in with the Fist of the North Star kind of movie. Yes, it’s bloody.

I also saw that one, and didn't even expect it to be anywhere near as good as the original, like it's not, but I still enjoyed that one. It is definitely entertaining with some killer looking scenes. I also found the scene where the cheating father of two little girls gets it hilarious. I also found the scene where Chucky comes at him near the end, saying, "I'm your friend 'til the end!" intense and killer looking. Overall, it's entertaining and in great picture quality with some killer fx, and better than a lot of the other remakes, despite the last part is not always saying much. I found this one and the "It" remakes two of the few remakes from recent years that are actually good. ::danger::

This is another remake from the past decade that actually turned out to be pretty amazing and overall well done, unlike a lot of the other remakes from this century. It starts off with good tribute to the original with its opening logo looking like the original's. The actors and actresses also did very good jobs at developing their roles perfectly. Each character was also developed real well. There is a lot of heart and emotion in this film with the main character trying to connect with her stepson who lost both of his real parents at a very young age, and is still getting to know his stepmom, who is now the only one with custody of him. Their relationship develops as the main alien takes them on a field trip to different places where the aliens have secret bases, and even helps them to understand each other better as they go along. There are also a lot of intense scenes with the military trying to shoot down the alien towers, only to be unsuccessful at their attempts. Just like the original, the aliens feel the people need to be more at peace with each other or to be destroyed as to be a threat to all of the other species on the planet and to the planet itself. Not only is the story and plot well developed, but it is also in great picture quality with very amazing effects throughout the whole film. It also has a touching ending that I won't describe in detail to avoid any spoilers for those who haven't already seen it. Overall, this is a good horror/sci-fi film, and worth a look to fans of the genre. Fans of the original should not be that disappointed either. ::danger::

Asmodexia (2014), directed by Marc Carreté.
Another take on the exorcism story. The film director's intention was to make the movie that will stand out from other supernatural flicks, I suppose. IMO the movie was killed by the soundtrack. I had the feeling that the music didn't match the picture. There are some "scary" moments in the movie, but all of them lack strong climax, highlighted by something as trivial as slightly loud music. The other thing is that Asmodexia focuses too much on the theological considerations of Eloy and Alba which somehow kills the whole dramaturgy on which the film primarily was based.
Funhouse (2019), directed by Jason William Lee.
One of the main roles fell to Valter Skarsgård (that face... surely very similar to his brother, Bill... Pennywise comes to my mind). The acting in this movie is full of pathos and gushiness, for which, paradoxically, the nice counterweight is almost statuesque style shown by Valter. There is some tension and conviction about the inevitability of the painful end of the characters, who despite quite unconvincing acting creations, can be liked. I heard somewhere that it's truly a social media horror showing desensitization of people in the era of the Internet. Well, we are witnesses of moral decay as we watch how citizens all over the world decide the destiny of reality show participants for fun.

Netflix:
Moonwalkers (2015) - 5/10
"A brain-addled war vet, a failing band manager and a Stanley Kubrick impersonator help the CIA construct an epic scam by faking the 1969 moon landing. Starring: Ron Perlman, Rupert Grint". A bit aimless at core without being funny.
War Horse (2011) - 5/10
"Young Albert enlists to serve in World War I after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. Albert's hopeful journey takes him out of England and to the front lines as the war rages on." Nice direction, but mostly rather a bore.
Extraction (2020) - 7/10
"Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth), a fearless black market mercenary, embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he's enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord." Nicely shot with well choreographed action. Has some heart and purpose to it, though rather unrealistic.
The Ritual (2017) - 6/10
"Following the sudden, violent death of their best mate, four young men reunite for a hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. Deep in the black, Nordic forest they find themselves lost in a hell of sinister nightmares and pagan sacrifices. For these ancient woods are home to a malevolent deity which will force them to face the darkness inside themselves." It's alright. Not much depth, reason and lacks commitment; it's not at all original to horror fans. But decent production value, acting and direction.

I guess if you were 16 and never saw a horror movie before - you might think this was a cool film.
I don't fit either criteria so to me this movie was so bad i fell dead asleep half way through.
Typical pathetic writing. so many filmmakers seem to live in a world where nothing has to make sense.
Here's where the film lost me: in the opening scene - 2 teenage girls are going through a box of stuff belonging to one of the girls recently deceased mother (where they find the haunted camera)
The first thing the other girl does is pick a ball out of the box and flippantly throw it across the room where it goes into a dark closet.
Of course the only purpose of this was to provide an obvious future jump out scare with the ball bouncing back into the room later ... but stop right there...

The rest of what i saw followed suit.

This is a new horror anthology film that is based on the same classic E.C. Comics published by William Gaines that Tales From The Crypt, The Vault Of Horror, and Creepshow are; and it continues in the tradition of the stories being based on bad karma getting those who have it coming to them! This one also won the Driectors' Choice Award at the Indie Horror Film Festival near Chicago and screened at the Bram Stoker International Film Festival in England as well. It opens up at a local diner with several of the main characters at different parts of it discussing brief intros to the segments they are in. It then starts off in a dark creepy graveyard with a few kids messing around, only to meet a scary but cool looking ghoul who has a lesson to teach about disturbing the dead.
The second segment is about a troubled young man named Norman who is believed to have a sick mother living with him who nobody has seen, and keeps going to the library to check out books on different plants and medicines who also has a very nosy neighbor who keeps suspecting he is up to something, then gets too carried away with her spying on him and eventually starts making accusations without proof or enough legit reason to believe.
The third segment begins with a hunter traveling from out of town on a hunting trip, hunting coyotes out of season, saying that when a farmer is offering $100 per coyote head, it's open season all year round. One thing he doesn't realize is that there are werewolves in that area that could bite him and turn him into one of them, and another farmer is offering $500 per werewolf head.
The fourth segment starts with a couple of young bank robbers on the run when their car breaks down, and they end up having a mysterious family who lives in that isolated area take them in for the time being until they can get their car fixed and back on the road. They don't realize the dark and maybe deadly secrets that family possesses.
The fifth segment is about a scientist studying human cell regeneration and about how starfish can grow lost legs back but humans can not, trying to discover a way he can change that. When a girl he cares about gets severely injured, he really goes over the top by trying to help her by using his research, then gets carried away when it doesn't work in the way he had hoped.
The sixth segment is about a pedophile who stalks small children at local playgrounds and elementary schools, only to find that not all young small children are as dumb and vulnerable as he thinks, and about how the past can come back to haunt in more ways than a lot of people realize.
This film is overall well done with the whole cast and crew doing excellent jobs in what they did and/or with the roles they played. There is also great looking props, scenery, costumes, and make up to have really cool and scary looking creatures like a ghoul, a werewolf, and zombies. The stories are also very original with good twists and turns before displaying bad karma getting those who have it coming to them. My personal favorites of the segments are the first, third, and sixth; but they are all good overall. This is also one of the better horror anthology films to come out in years, maybe decades now. Fans of E.C. Comics, Tales From The Crypt, The Vault Of Horror, and Creepshow should not be disappointed with this one. ::cool::

Never Hike Alone (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt05719786/)
I love this shit.
Immediately from the title card with the Elm Street-nod, you know that these people know what they are doing. Following the vlogger made me think for a minute that this would turn into found footage, but they carefully moved around that. This is easily one of the scariest entries in the franchise and at least this kid puts up more of a fight than Rob did in part four.
I loved how one of the medics was called Axel. Great callback to The Final Chapter. I also thought the head squeeze was a little nod to part six, but maybe that's far fetched. And of course Thom Mathews making an appearance. Awesome.

HIS NAME WAS JASON (2009). Released in time for the 2009 FRIDAY, THE 13th release, this is an OK little doc on the whole series with interviews with many of the players involved in the franchise, such as Tom Savini (pretty cool job as Host), Sean Cunningham, Julie Aaronsen, Debisue Voorhees, Jensen Daggett, Kane Hodder, Harry Manefredi etc. Entertaining, but has a quality of being rushed to be ready in time for the reboot and would liked to have seen interviews if at all possible with Steve Miner, Kevin Bacon, Crispin Glover and Jeannine Taylor. Still a sense of fun about it and worth seeing if You're a fan. ***

Mandy (2018), directed by Panos Cosmatos.
I decided to check it out because I've heard that Panos Cosmatos is compared to Alejandro Jodorowsky (whose movies I personally like very much). After watching Mandy, I can see why he is praised for his expressive and original style. Using dreamlike frames and overwrought colouring, he created one of the most oneiric movies of recent years. Here we have Linus Roache as a mad preacher, who is worthily competing for each scene with Nicolas Cage... and Andrea Riseborough, portraying Mandy - she looks as if she existed on the border between waking and sleeping.
This movie isn't for everyone and that's perfectly fine. There is nothing new in the presented story, but the way it is presented... Well, colours are outstanding, visuals are totally trippy, music fits the sinister atmosphere perfectly. I must say, I'm not a fan of Nicolas Cage but his performance is on the verge of insanity and that works superb. Worth checking out if you like slightly psychedelic stuff.

Timecop
Van Helsing
End of Days
raided the HD-DVD shelf Friday night and grabbed a mitt full of movies I haven't seen in a while.
Timecop is getting a little dated but still a good watch. Ron Silver makes a great villain. Noted for the first time that Sam Raimi was one of the producers.
Van Helsing... still hard to watch .. it's pretty obvious that the actor playing Dracula was told to play it over the top in a Bela Lugosi style but man, you really have to turn your head to the side and squint to give this movie a pass.
End of days.. maybe one of Arnolds better performances .. no dumb catch phrases .. he plays it pretty straight. Enjoyable film.

Death Sentence (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0804461/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt) - This is a poor man's Death Wish: the happy family in the beginning, the losing the son, justice department sucks at it's job, the execution style killings, Hey Joe on the soundtrack for some reason... And at one point the main character escapes from the hospital and shaves his hair, because of course he does.
That said, Bacon and Goodman both do a decent job and share a good scene.

I remember thinking Death Wish was a cool iconic film... but after watching it again .. i thought it was pretty crappy. It made a huge impression at the time because there was nothing really like it before. It was very raw - something i normally like .. but this viewing has me wondering why i ever liked it. Both films were based on books by the same author - Brian Garfield .. although apparently Death Sentence wasn't much like the book at all.
Kevin Bacon acts rings around Bronson. And I thought Goodman was fantastic.

What'd you guys think of The Brave One (2007), starring Jodie Foster? That's basically Death Wish again. I thought it was alright. It was fairly realistic. It doesn't torture us with a graphic opening attack on Jodie. It deals with Jodie dealing with the attack eventually, and first her being a vigilante.
Eugeok -- I know what you mean about some films you watch again much later and wonder why you ever thought it was good or why it made an impression. I'd suggest the obvious, it's about how it made you feel. Attacking a fear head on is (usually) a liberating experience. Of course Death Wish, as I recall, is more so revenge, as I don't recall the Bronson character was ever shown to be scared of anything. But we, the general audience, would have a healthy fear of seeking out violent encounters with violent criminals in their hunting grounds.
I'd rather just except your assessment that Death Wish was a sucky film, but otherwise there's the notion the pace and shots of 70's films at the time can be rather slow and mostly undynamic.

This reminds me of something I heard on the Dead Meat channel on Final Destination. According to James, the test audiences were so shocked by the scene with Terry being run over by a bus that the filmmakers had to insert 40 seconds of footage in order to give them time to recover. Maybe filmmakers in the 70s also purposely gave the audience more time to take in the action.

I see where you are coming from. Death Wish is one of those films where the iconic status perhaps makes it better than it actually is.
I also agree that John Goodman makes for a good villain. I wonder if he had any other villain roles and I don't include 10 Cloverfield Lane because that one left it a bit in the middle.

Martyrs (2008), directed by Pascal Laugier.
One thing comes to my mind: WOW. This is actually a masterpiece. Such a dark, ground-breaking, brave and moving piece of work. It did play on my mind. Truly devastating.
Train (2008), directed by Gideon Raff.
I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting with this one. It's about a bunch of American kids travelling around and getting terrorized in a titular train in Eastern Europe. There are some loopholes, but it can work for fans of gore with a not so bad of a story line.
[Rec] 3: Genesis (2012), directed by Paco Plaza.
[Rec] 4: Apocalypse (2014), directed by Jaume Balagueró.
[Rec] 3 totally departs from [Rec] & [Rec] 2 - actually the one and only link connecting these stories is "Uncle" who happens to be a vet recently bitten by a dog ([Rec]). The movie itself is like... love it or hate it. As an individual black comedy flick it's pretty good.
[Rec] 4 is finally back to the original story, though. I liked it. ::cool::
Afflicted (2013), directed by Derek Lee, Clif Prowse.
The concept is solid, though it's quite messy. Throughout the first part of the movie, the action developed really slowly... and it didn't look much like a horror film. All in all, I liked the idea and it was quite entertaining, though there were some flaws - some scenes were a little bit cheesy, could have been omitted, really.
The Occupant (2020), directed by David Pastor, Àlex Pastor.
It's full of narrative holes (I don't want to spoil anything, but for the first half of the film it's not clear what the protagonist wants...). Javier Gutiérrez as a sociopath does a good job, though the movie is very predictable. Don't get me wrong, it's not THAT bad, but I can't stop thinking it could have been done better.

i saw/have The Brave One. I thought it was a well done film. You don't see Jodie Foster in anything bad really .. she's had a very cultivated career.
I love the grit and rawness of 70's film. its my favourite era both cinematically and musically. I love a slow paced film too. But Death Wish - last time i watched it - it just felt sloppy .. bad editing ..and lets face it .. he may be watchable but Bronson was never a very good actor. Just that one stone face tough guy persona. he didnt change much off screen from the interviews ive seen,
I was surprised .. i knew all the sequels were absolute crap but i remember thinking the first one was pretty good. I guess after years of 1000's of films, i understand the craft a lot better .. or at least developed a certain expectation and style for my personal tastes.

I have seen all except for part 4. I remember part 2 being fairly decent, but over the run of the series, the focus seems to be shifting from storytelling and filmmaking to gore. The plot is quite simple, though the movie is really depressing and disturbing. Gory, violent and intense.
Livid (2011), directed by Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury.
It's like a dark modern horror fairytale. Quite unique, there's a proper amount of horror and fantasy.
Both movies were directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, French filmmakers. I've read that their influences come from Dario Argento, Roman Polański, Clive Barker and John Carpenter. They debuted with a controversial gory flick and then they were detached to Halloween II (2009), but eventually they left the project. I see they also made Among the Living (2014) and Leatherface (2017). Actually, I'm a little bit reluctant to Leatherface, but maybe I'll see it, out of curiosity.

Atrocious (2010), directed by Fernando Barreda Luna.
The Orphanage (2007), directed by J.A. Bayona.
Some Spanish horrors. To me, The Orphanage is more like a drama, quite sad one. Atrocious is not a bad found-footage flick, but actually had a potential to be better.

Yes, I did. I watched it at night with no light and it was pretty scary from what I remember. Kinda freaky, you may say. The sounds were quite sinister (sometimes too loud, IMO) and the special effects were good. To me, the story could have been more developed, though the pacing was well-aligned. Creepy supernatural beings, tense atmosphere - let's say it was a solid horror movie.
While we're on the subject of Spanish horrors... have you seen Verónica (2017)? I enjoyed that one, though I'm not a big fan of possession-like movies. Maybe it's not that scary and has mixed reviews (actually some are a little bit too harsh), but, all in all, it's watchable. ::wink::

No, haven't seen Veronica. I'm not a big fan of films where 'strange things happen' without a very specific reason for the exact thing that happens. I mean just seeing and hearing and finding 'scary' and 'weird' things, cause there's an angry spirit or whatever, not my cup of tea. But if what they see is very specific to the plot, to character's own mind or experiences, then I'm on board, but that seems to be rather rare.

THE REEF (2010)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Two couples and a deck hand set out for some fun/business before their boat strikes a reef, putting a hole in the bottom. The question is to stay with the slowly sinking boat in the open ocean, hoping for rescue or swimming to a known island some miles away, even if Wally (The Deck Hand) mentions "I know what's out there...".
Have seen some criticism of this in some quarters, but I think it's a visceral taut little film that is extremely frightening. I thunk Sharks-and Great Whites in particular- are fascinating animals, but can't think of anything scarier than being grabbed by a Station Wagon with teeth::EEK!::. Also, the hugeness of the ocean and not knowing where said White might be....

The Descent: Part 2 (2009), directed by Jon Harris.
I love The Descent (2005). As for The Descent: Part 2, well, it was not necessary (the first part's ending is open to interpretation and that's the point actually), but still entertaining.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003), directed by Rob Zombie.
It's more like a black comedy than a horror... There's no tension and anything new, though I still find it kinda fun to watch.
Get In (2019), directed by Olivier Abbou.
Huge disappointment for me. I have a small problem with Netflix thrillers - I didn't like any of them so far.
This movie really made my hackles rise... the characters were annoying, no one to symphatize with... unnecessary threads departing from the main one... There was one scene which was truly scary / disturbing, but the whole movie was just meh.
Frontière(s) (2007), directed by Xavier Gens.
Really violent, fast-paced... a blood-soaked gore, recommended for those who like dark slashers, I guess.

A quick question that I have.
Decided to watch the first Alien, the directors Cut. After seeing many years the original version, during this pandemic I've wanted to see the other version also and saw something that blew me away.
In the original Alien, Dallas disappears without any trace and his wareabouts are left without an answer. But in the directors cut, we see that Ripley discovers the alien nest where Dallas has been impregnated with a xenomorph, near the body of Brett, who is becoming an alien egg (?).
Why did a big twist like this was left out?

Incredible, to be honest. That scene is really a preview of what the marines find in Aliens and explains a lot about the ending Dallas had.

I had seen the director's cut back in 2003, but I didn't catch that Brett was turning into an egg. It's only in the novel do they indicate Brett is turning into an egg.
As far as the film Alien goes, I'm not sure why they left it out. But I find the film full of symbolism, the heartless corporation, Ash and Alien, evil getting inside. What happens to Dallas and Brett, and Ripley having to kill them, is horrific; and it's an interesting, though very fuzzy aspect of Alien biology, but I don't think it readily fits into the symbolism and focus of the film.
Also, although it's a nice to break in Ripley's long escape sequence... I don't think it helps to have the audience distracted, trying to figure out what they just saw, when they really should be focused on Ripley trying to escape in time.

I stopped half way through Black Panther.
Although i think it's an incredibly important film, and i really like the character and the actor who plays him, i wasn't a huge fan of the movie.
I felt the exact same way about Aquaman .. and i cant help but draw so many parallels between the 2 films. Hidden advance civilisations, the hero is royalty, a lot of flash and dash but nothing unexpected .. etc.
Black Panther is technically a good movie and as i said - a huge cultural landmark in cinema history - but i couldn't connect to it. Never saw the comic as a kid either .. which is probably a huge contributor to how i feel about it.
I do like the character/actress who plays his scientist/sister .. she's a lot of fun.

I thought Black Panther was ok, but I thought they went a boring route. It's been a few years since I've seen it, but basically I thought the best part of the story was Erik Stevens/N'Jadaka abandoned in America who returns home take the throne and plans to share Wakanda's technology with people of African descent around the world to help them conquer their oppressors. If the film had him do that for an extended time, and not just be some kind of arms dealer, that would have been a very interesting main story, but instead it was this side story that didn't fit so well.

The Sacrament (2013), directed by Ti West.
Pretty decent found-footage movie. It's more thriller than horror. The plot is loosely based on the story of Jim Jones and "Jonestown". The first half of the movie was quite promising, then it was only disturbing.
Hagazussa (2017), directed by Lukas Feigelfeld.
Beautiful landscapes, dark atmosphere... The movie itself is quite heavy in reception - it shows how a person who is totally isolated and excluded can be overwhelmed by paranoia and insanity. Well, it's a symbolic picture, quite "silent" (there isn't much talking). Rather for people who liked the haunting atmosphere of The Vvitch (2015)... I personally didn't like any of them much.

No-Do or The Haunting (2009), directed by Elio Quiroga.
Kinda melodramatic ghost story - dark, a little too little tension, with an ominous mansion and spontaneously appearing / disappearing ghosts, slowly revealing secrets from the past... There we have some links to Catholic regime (even a neat reference to No-Do films), but again - for me it's more like a drama than a horror. ::wink::

Yes, I agree. It's like... sad / tragic and funny at the same time. There are many funny movies from Scandinavia, not to mention The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (2013) based on a best-selling book by Jonas Jonasson, or En ganske snill mann (which is A Somewhat Gentle Man, I believe) (2010), if you like Stellan Skarsgård. ::cool::

MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001). Despite some extraneous scenes that don't add anything but running time, this David Lynch film starts well with two women , one an aspiring actress (Naomi Watts ::love::) , the other an amnesiac (Laura Elena Harring::love::::love::::love::::love::, she reminds me a lot of the older classic screen beauties) who meet and try to figure out why Laura has a large amount of cash , a blue key in her purse and why a particular name means something. Lots of noir elements-mysterious shadows, shady characters, wonderful photography-involved and an extremely sensual love scene between the two.
After that, the weird stuff begins and it's all but impossible to figure out what's going on. I'm all for ambiguity, but up to a point and many Lynch films often are too vague, turning it into a chore to watch. This has a good reputation and it's worth seeing, but pisses Me off knowing it could have been so much better. **

Based on real events as the note at the beginning of the movie says. Intense and touching. Worth noticing that Agata Buzek was superb in her role.
Turistas (2006), directed by John Stockwell.
It's better to watch it when you don't have great expectations - then it can be fun. Not a splatter, there isn't much gore... More like an adventure horror.
Ghost Stories (2017), directed by Jeremy Dyson, Andy Nyman.
Entertaining. Spooky with a quite typical British sense of humor. The story of a man who devoted himself to refuting deceptive psychics, now dealing with three unexplained mystery cases.

It's Alive 1974 Larry Cohen film.
A cult film that everyone talked about when it came out but utterly laughable today.
this did not age well .. it was thrown together like a kid doing an essay at the last second. boring boring boring. just silly.
Gargoyles a 1972 made for TV rubber monster flick that makes It's Alive look like the Citizen Kane of horror.
2 films from my favorite decade that only goes to prove that the 70's was loaded with turds too.

Slumber (2017), directed by Jonathan Hopkins.
The premise of a sleep demon sounds pretty interesting, but the execution was terrible. It had some good parts that were ruined by some bad ones. I would say it stays at a constant level of 'had potential but wasn't fully exploited'. Acceptable, though I wouldn't like to watch it again.
The Remains (2016), directed by Thomas Della Bella.
Standard haunted house tale - the story that's been done to death.
It looks pretty cheap, none should expect a Hollywood special effects galore. The movie is too bright as for an obscure horror tale. The acting is bad, seems like actors are reading their lines for the first time ever, so it does lack conviction. A/W, despite the negatives it is watchable. ::wink::
Three Sisters T (2011), directed by Maciej Kowalewski.
Theater in the cinema... Nothing new; it is a dark, grotesque study of psychosis, also quite repulsive. The cast is convincing, the acting is theatrical - just as it was meant to be. Music and editing isn't bad, but could be done better. I would say that for a low-budget movie - pretty satisfactory. The problem could be in the script - the director uses a psychological thriller along with a black comedy which seems a great idea... but comic elements are storming the seriousness, which results in non-equilibrium. Most 'gags' were completely ridiculous, sometimes embarrassing. The dialogues were thin, it got much more comical after the appearance of a hairdresser, but still a little bit disappointing. Unfortunately, the final didn't satisfy me as well.
Hotel of the Damned (2016), directed by Bobby Barbacioru.
Okay, first of all, I hated the screaming in the beginning. Drove me nuts.
The movie presents the story of a group of people who are involved in a car crash, then injured and with a little choice, they decide to spend the night in an isolated hotel that has grim secrets of its own. There is a proper atmosphere created - with a low light to keep the shadows to a maximum, the cinematography is realistic. The acting is shoddy, the whole movie might be entertaining, but turned out to be pretty lame.
Orphan (2009), directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.
Well-done. Well-acted, really surprised me. Pretty disturbing, excellent thriller. It creates a good atmosphere, contains quite clever twist. The story is based on the intelligent nine-year-old girl's skillful manipulation (great job, Isabelle ::wink::). Camera work, culminations of moments full of unbearable tension are masterfully exploited elements of Orphan.

Finally finished the series last night.
Still cant put my finger on why Ant-Man and Wasp felt so weak.
I think it might be that there is too much going on .. everything is rushing from one spot to another. i think the filmmaker recognised this and tried to slow it down for a short moment where Scott and his daughter have a father and daughter moment - then right back to the rat race again. i'm thinking i might appreciate it more over time .. not sure.
Endgame didn't have the same impact it had in the theatre but it still packed a solid punch and it was very bittersweet watching it come to the end. not just because of Tony Stark - but because it is the end of a story that took so many years to build. you can feel the friendships that go beyond the characters on screen.
I think the biggest impact for me was still the end credits where the core avengers had their individual credits displayed with their signatures. quite a rush of feelings seeing that again.
it will be a long while before i watch all of these again - but who knows .. the older i get the more i forget. i might not remember anything a year from now :)

When I started watching Crawl (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8364368/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), I was expecting something along the lines of The Shallows. A person unwittingly caught in a shit storm. Whereas this... I know characters in horror movies make dumb decisions, but this got to a point where it became annoying. I also did not care all that much for the father daughter heart to heart stuff.
That said, the last half hour did deliver on the tension and for something I expected to be one person vs nature, it does rack up a decent kill count.

looks like it was thrown together by a high school kid.
nothing flows .. just a painful attempt to be a 'cool western' but it falls flat on it's face. No chemistry between anyone .. forced dialogue, boring 'action' scenes.

Metal - A Headbangers Journey
very entertaining documentary about metal - from it's beginnings - to how it branched out into several subgenres - to why so many people put it down.
It was made by a Canadian (represent!) who travelled all over the world interviewing a lot of interesting cats. If you haven't seen this - i highly recommend it - if you like metal or not (i mostly dont - with a few exceptions)
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Fincher)
it's been a while -i felt like having another look at this one and enjoyed it more than i did the first time .. now that i could just watch and not make comparisons to the european version. this is one of those rare cases where the film (both versions) are far better than the book - which i thought was poorly written. It's supposed to be a 'locked room' mystery that isn't - but tries to distract you from that with a serial killer subplot. Really good performances and Fincher's directorial style elevate this film well above the flat story.
Monster's Inc.
speaking as a parent, and a fan - this is the best kid's movie ever made as far as i'm concerned.
Very clever - genius concept - and gorgeous to look at.

Recovery (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5473124/?ref_=tt_urv). It gets started a bit slow, but overall, it's decent for a slasher. The nearly all female cast was a nice change of pace and it certainly picked up steam over the last 30 minutes, because the big reveal comes at least a bit earlier than usual. On the other hand, the red herring is pretty obvious from the get go and you don't get anything all that memorable.
I do wonder why that final scene was tacked on, because it did not seem to anything other than options for interpretation. Would it have been too much of a downer without?

American Gospel (2018) (Netflix Documentary)
7/10
Documentary critiques the 'prosperity gospel' ('The Secret', 'Name it Claim it', Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen), (a philosophy that God rewards those who live faithful lives with material wealth), and how many Prosperity leaders have exploited their followers; and details how this is not correct christian teaching, improperly scriptural.
I like how the documentary jumps right into it, well paced, sufficiently wide in scope, clarity and understandable. In can be watched in piecemeal (sections at a time). To critique, with a 2hr 15min runtime, I think the second hour loses cohesiveness and punch, as it moves into some extemporaneous material (like the Ray Comfort street evangelism), and includes too much secondary interview material not directly core to the theme.

Daniel Isn't Real (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8745960/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt) was an enjoyable thriller. At the start, I thought it was going in a vein similar to Fight Club, but it soon becomes more than that. Maybe the best compliment to a thriller is when the tension is so good that most of the special effects look a bit silly. Or maybe it's the other way around. ::wink::
I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters and both leads do a good job, with Schwarzenegger junior turning out to be a pleasant surprise (especially when his other Imdb-credits include scouts guide to the zombie apocalypse). Would like to see them in other decent thriller and horrors.
Also a mention for Sasha Lane. She reminded me a bit of Lisa Bonet's character in High Fidelity. Don't know if she was purposely chanelling her, just came to mind.

Like watching Godfather III with Don Corleone being replaced by Jack Torrance, but sadly without a whole lot happening.
Tom Hardy did a great job playing an senile and rude Capone, with a raspy voice, however I had some issues with the make-up that had his face look old in some places and young in others. And his eyes... oh God, his eyes..::EEK!::
I would so much have prefered a Godfather II story, with an "old" Capone thinking back on his life in crime, starting with him as a kid. But noooo...

After Patch Adams, he actually had a slew of darker, thought provoking kind of movies and I actually consider it an interesting highlight in his career.
Though arguably these kind of films started before Patch Adams with
"What Dreams may Come", another fantastic addition to these kind of movies.
You had:
Jakob the Liar
Bicentennial Man
(His small part in) AI
One Hour Photo
Death to Smoochy
Insomnia
The Final Cut
...almost one after the other.
A little further down the line he had "The Night Listener", one that I've never seen personally, but definitely fit into the tone of the others from what I've seen.
...and they're all actually quite good as well, would recommend anyone who hasn't dived into this rough decade of his career, take a look.

This is a found footage film about a search party going to an island off the Michigan coast where a group of campers is said to have disappeared without a trace back in 1999. There is not much original about this film, but it is entertaining, and it does manage to keep interest. The actors all did great jobs with their roles as well. There is one scene where a group of hicks come at them with guns, telling them to get out of there, with the leader saying that is state property, and they have every right to be there. He then states that those guys were not there before in 1999, and they "have to be cooking meth." I found that part to be funny, along with the whole team ending up missing, yet nobody even suspects the gunmen who were not seen or mentioned after that point may have had something to do with it. Again, it's not original, but it is entertaining with some funny and some interesting moments. Fans of the found footage sub-genre should enjoy this one. ::cool::

Absolute crap amateur-hour garbage. I watched it because Linnea Quigley is in it ..
but it was just an embarrassing mess.

This one surprised me - i actually had a lot of fun with this one.
pretty decent monster effects .. good cast ..and smart score choices .. way better than most films of this ilk.

I remember hearing some good things about a British movie with Robert Carlyle as a lone wolf terrorist sort of figure. But I cannot put my finger on the title.
Has anyone of you seen it?

This is a schlock style comedy horror film that is meant to be stupid and campy looking but funny with over the top humor, and it is funny and entertaining in that sort of way. It begins with a beginning B horror film maker thinking he finally got into a big film festival, invites his friends and relatives over for a big party to celebrate, but after he actually reads the letter he got back from them, it not only said he got rejected, but they also said his film sucks so bad, he needs to give up film making, and go find something else, like ditch digging. After all of his friends and relatives arrive, wanting him to give them the official word, he loses his nerve to tell them he was wrong and isn't going anywhere, then lies and says they're going to Hollywood. The celebration gets wild until somebody finally picks the letter out of his pocket to read it themselves, then they announce the actual, showing off the letter. After that, hell breaks loose with everybody throwing and breaking things, ganging up on him and beating him up. After they knock him out, they write "loser" on his forehead. The next day, the town suddenly gets infected by real zombies, giving him the idea of shooting another zombie film with real zombies in found footage format. This is similar to a lot of the Troma movies from the 1980s and 1990s; along with Pot Zombies, Diary Of The Dead, and Safe Zone: The Making Of Safe Zone. The editing in this film is not the best, and ruined it for a lot of other viewers, but it still funny and entertaining on the most part, and should still be worth a look for one time to those into that type of film. ::devil::

Say, Tommy, curious about your use of the term womp womp moments. You wrote "The first ten minutes had two or three womp womp-moments and the rest was silly and goofy." I googled womp womp moments, and various sources say it's from the long time famous "awww, you lose" trombone sound, and means something sad, or bad happened. Are you using it in a different way? Like the way you used it in that sentence sounds like you mean in the first 10mins there were some "good things" that happened. I know things change. I saw it has a used in the online game Fortnite too -- looking at the video, might be used after fragging a guy, which would work with the "aww, you lose" traditional usage. thanks!

Well, the way I understood it up until now is some form of lameness/failure. In this case, a foreshadowing line so on the nose and obvious that it becomes lame. Example: Terminator 3. A few minutes in, Clare Danes' character has the line "I hate machines". Womp womp. ::sad::::big grin::
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrln8zrAlVI
In the case of Hellraiser III, the main character/reporter being frustrated about a boring job and then hearing something like "the story of your life may be closer than you think".

OK, I got ya. So you were saying the first ten minutes of Hellraiser3 had a few moments of lame lines that drew attention to themselves, "becoming self aware", pretty much breaking the forth wall (taking you out of the story universe), and the rest was silly and goofy? That's sounds pretty bad for a horror film.
Yeah, the original Hellraiser was pretty straight horror and didn't break the forth wall. It had some satire of course, but not self-aware parody. Not too uncommon for sequels. I think of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 which jumped the ship and went to a weird dark humor parody of itself.

I just looked at the trailer. I can tell I haven't seen it yet. I saw Hellraiser 2, but wasn't impressed. Looks like H3 with all it's special effects, is kinda like Nightmare on Elm St 3: Dream Warriors.
On Rotten Tomatoes the audience score is 36% for 42,000 ratings. That's pretty bad. It's even worse than the critics 41%, which isn't a bad critics score for a horror film. ::big grin::

FRIDAY THE 13th (2009). Will praise the 1980 original from now to the end of time. For the money they didn't have. (think it cost under a million??), it looks polished and truly scary.
Didn't really have high expectations for this, but just amazed at how BAD it was, and for all that money too. No scares, no pacing, characters that were even more annoying than the annoying characters in the sequels, but kind of neat how they threw in little references from past F13 films. Some honeys ,especially Julianna Guill and as a big SUPERNATURAL fan, the wife enjoys drooling over Jared Padalecki, helped out a bit, but even that wasn't worth sitting through this. 1/2

The ladies in the remake looked straight from a bland teen show. Even there, the remake does not hold a candle to the original.

Ever since I saw Dead Snow, the combination of Nazis and zombies sounds appealing to me. But Outpost is pretty forgettable. The only nice thing I can say, is that one of the leads was in a British sitcom called Coupling.
