The Interview
5/10
Dave Skylark and producer Aaron Rapoport run the celebrity tabloid show "Skylark Tonight." When they land an interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, they are recruited by the CIA to turn their trip to Pyongyang into an assassination mission.
It was on Netflix, so I checked it out. Lots of people like silly & crude humor entertainment, like a buddy of mine... if something crude is being said or done, he's lovin it. That & fast talkin insults... cable shows Archer, Venture Bros, Eastbound & Down, he's there 24/7. Not my cup of tea. But if you love that stuff, you'll like The Interview. There's decent production value, but there's no intellectual humor stimulation or cleverness that you might find in films like Top Secret & Monty Python films.

9/10
A troubled psychologist is sent to investigate the crew of an isolated research station orbiting a bizarre planet.
What's your EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient)? Do you like emotionally visceral films? If it's high for either of these, I think you'll love this film. This is sci-fi that doesn't include exploding spaceships; rather exploring the nature of humanity, but on a very personal level.
It's rich in mood & atmosphere, with the music & Steven Soderbergh's direction tightly woven. It hit me like a ton of bricks when I first saw it. It's not a tricky or intellectually taxing film, it's experiential & visceral in a high-EQ-level sort of way.
If you see it, don't invest yourself into how the film is going to end. It's not that kind of film. The ending is completely arbitrary. You don't want to spend your time on a roller coaster wondering how it's going to end. Likewise, the ending has nothing to do with the impact & enjoyment of the film; it's the experience of the journey... I think it spotlights that our understanding & response to life is what matters.
Seems there's a rather large love-it or hate-it divide on this film. In my opinion, it has to do with the viewer's focus. Brings to mind, early in the film, at a cocktail party, the main character (Clooney) & the beautiful Rheya (Natascha McElhone) are exchanging interested glances from across the room. When he finally approaches her, just as he begins to speak, she cuts him off & says, "Don't blow it." That's what the film is about, getting it right.

I didn't know this was a Lifetime movie when I rented it, I don't mind some Lifetime movies, but not a Stephen King story. Hollywood manages to mess up many of his stories when they make movies and tv series, I think this could be one of them. I would like to hear other opinions on this one if possible. I also have to add that I am a HUGE Stephen King fan; however, there are a few stories of his that I don't find appealing.

Cool mask, as you can see and Haley Jay so cute and tiny. : ) But thats about it. I can't get into a film that show the start of a brutal act, then switches the camera away, or puts a table or chair in front of the torture/kill/stabbing, then go back and see the aftermath. That does not make a horror film, unless there is a great amazing build up that your mind can..imagine the scene, well that didn't happen. This film will reside next to Easter Casket. Oh, alot of naked women, but that doesn't make a horror movie either..

SCREAM (1996), Think this is a decent film although it's almost painfully self aware at it's own cleverness. Still, one of Wes Craven's better films and good cast, especially Matthew Lillard who pretty much runs with the film. Wished he could have been in the horrid sequels to liven them up. ***1/2

I've seen quite a few of the films Craven directed. I think Scream was the most enjoyable; and Serpent & the Rainbow was probably the best directed film.

I was bored. I didn't care about anything the characters did or the characters themselves. There was little action, just lots of badly acted boring dialogue and scenes of trying to hard to be creepy. Action including special effects, but not excluding anything else. The only cool part was the ventriloquism, a part I won't mention so as not to ruin the movie, but I assume if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about. As well when Mary Shaw was performing it was interesting. Otherwise it was uninteresting. My suspension of disbelief faltered fast mostly because it seemed there were plot holes, things happening that were too convenient. The cop was irritating, not amusing or whatever else they were trying to have him be. There was no dread, I knew almost everything that was going to happen.

Got ya. Actually, I agree with all your comments - the ventriloquism scene with the woman was the best part. The dialogue was poor, was cop impetus was bland, the characters were flat & didn't evoke much to care about them. I must have been in a good mood when I saw it. I was mostly looking to be scared, & I found it scary, & I mildly enjoyed it.

Birdman is Batman (with Michael Keaton ofcourse).
He had two movies. Last one was in the early 90's. Just like the last Birdman.
They also mentioned he was doing it long before the comic book hype started.
The Birdman voice is quite similar to Christian Bale's Batman. I think Michael Keaton's Batman spoke with a regular voice.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/32/Hellraiser_III.png
Doug Bradley gives a superb performance and I love the idea of exploring Pinhead's humanity (that was introduced in the previous film). Unfortunately this movie doesn't have much else going for it. This sequel is arguably one of the weakest of the series and it veers heavily from what made the previous two films unique and disturbing. Instead it embraces the more campy aspects of the genre and sadly resorts to a heavy use of cheesy one-liners. The special effects makeups and gore for the most part are exceptional however the designs of the Cenobites are very disappointing. I really like the hospital emergency room scene where the guy is ripped apart by chains. I also liked the design of the pillar and the scene where chains shoot out of it and rip off Sandy's skin was a pretty cool visual.

This was a really solid psychological detective noir that I felt brought the franchise back to it's dark, moody and disturbing roots. The designs of the Cenobites were really creepy especially the one without any legs. My only complaint is at times it doesn't really feel like it's part of the Hellraiser franchise and there are not nearly enough Pinhead scenes.

Haunt 2013. 2 out of 5.
This movie was not immersive. It was quite dull. The only 'scares' were weak and routine. The characters were also weak. I could not finish this film, which normally I give a film one star for. However the one unusual aspect in this film made me wistful a bit, the family and the girl from the house next door were all well adjusted. The family was loving, warm, and open with each other. A rarity in general and particularly in movies. It wasn't a 'family friendly' cliche or movie rating type of thing. But I wouldn't recommend it. The fact that I could not immerse myself in the story is its biggest negative.

Had some CGI to the FX and that takes points away from the film but the players were awesome! Really felt real. Found footage with an instagramish feel. Nice.

I watched The Deaths of Ian Stone last night. Not sure how I feel about it. I liked the way it was filmed. The premise was fun if not a little to Matrix-y. There were some solid death scenes. I would say 7/10.

No, actually there's 1 movie that's equally good. The Thai original "13 Beloved", if you're into foreign horror, that is. It IS actually possible to enjoy both movies, coz the story is not exactly the same.
Personally I liked the remake a little bit better, but that might be because I saw it first. Both are great horror/thriller/comedies.

The Manson Family (2003)
Creatively edited, rapid-fire exploitation mockumentary that attempts to tell the story from the eyes of "The Family" members, while also exploring the idea that The Family lives on through modern day Manson followers. The acting's distractingly mediocre for a faux documentary, but it's worth watching for the interesting delivery and the the sheer gruesomeness of the murders.

A mockumentary? Makes it sound like a comedy, or at least a parody. Why do you call it a mockumentary? Was it in documentary style with a narrator & stuff?
I've researched The Family a number of times for various reasons. Including getting to know the real life victims of The Family. From what I read this is truly an exploitation film. I'm sure I'm all alone on this, but I'm really getting bothered at actual crimes of real people getting killed being portrayed as nothing but exploitation entertainment.

Part of it is sort of found footage - meant to be be like the The Family home movies. The is also a segment (not FF) set in contemporary times.
The tatlented Jim Van Bebber directed it - I loved it. It doesn't particularly exploit the crimes, no more than any other film on the subject.

Wow... that was disappointing. ::sad::
The director obviously believe nobody has seen the first movie, coz you have to wait untill the halfway mark before something starts to happen in this one, and even longer before we actually get to see the woman in black. Ridiculous. A sequal should at least give us more action than it's predecessor, coz what reason is there to hide what we've already seen?
Well, at least the last 20 minutes gives the viewer non-stop action. Too bad it's cliches and jump scares all the way. Actually the entire movie consists of cliches and jumps scares between its slow ass build-up, and the very few times it attemps something slow and creepy it cut away way too fast or gives us a cliche jump scare instead. FUCK YOUUUUU!! ::mad::
The only thing I really liked about this movie was the small cameo by the lead actor of the original movie from 1989. Also know as Harry Potter's dad.

After an awsome intro, this one sadly turned out to be a mediocre slasher. All characters and conversations where so awkward and cringe-inducing you couldn't wait for the pshycho to show up and start slashing away. That was a very long wait.
Well, it was a semi-decent directorial debut by Trevor Matthews, the lead actor in Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer. If you haven't seen him or the movie, check this scene out. It could've been taken out of Analyze This.

IMDB description:
"A documentary exploring genre based monster art takes an odd turn when the filmmakers are contacted by a man who claims he can prove that monsters are indeed real."
I really liked the idea behind the story, so it was disappointing to see it executed this badly with WAY too much time spend on dialogue about monsters and too few actual monster moments to make up for it. A fun idea wasted.
The movie did have some subtle humor, irony, decent acting, and a whole lot of product placements and references to the directors former movies. Oh, and the few monsters you get to see are pretty damn cool.

When Cody begins to suspect that the Berlin woman he's been dating long distance might live a lot closer to home, he sets out to uncover the truth.
Saw this on Netflix. Has nice production value, shot well, good background music soundtrack. It's uses a 'hands off' modern 'documentary' realistic story telling style, as opposed to the heavy handed hollywood romantic comedy overacting style.
I liked the characters (not to mention the female is lead stunningly captivating). The mystery & investigation is OK, doesn't go into those unreal hollywood twists (like the chic is a terrorist). I was invested, and was looking forward to a big 'confrontation' between the two main characters. I don't think I'm giving anything away if I say they do meet (or else people would seek out a destroy the filmakers), but it was much too anticlimactic, short & simple for me.

Second viewing since it was released and I think I like it more than the first time.
Part 1 was already over-the-top and with part 2 they just said 'fuck it, let's go fucking mental'.
I'm still hoping they make a third part.
If you haven't seen Crank, I highly recommend it.
I have watched all the Transporter movies and both Crank movies and I thoroughly enjoyed them both!! Love Jason Statham!!
[QOUTE=Sculpt;989423]We have war documentary aficionados here?
History in HD: The Last Bomb (netflix)
8/10
Documentary detailing the US Military's processes for final months of bombing of Japan. Gives a good slice of the setting, bombers, strategy, footage of bombing & dog fights, and day-in-life of the pilots.
Frontline: Battle Zones: Ukraine & Syria (netflix)
8/10
Fascinating look at the daily on-the-ground situation in Ukraine (& Syria). Chaotic civil war, violence & revenge. If you're interested in getting a feel of what it's really like there, & the real 'whys', I recommend it.[/QUOTE]
I have watch a few war documentaries, my husband watches a lot more of them. I believe he watched the same ones you have. I have to admit that they are rather interesting.

Annabelle (2014)
Some good jump scares but a bit of a disappointment. I went into it thinking this doll could rival Chucky but not so much. I kept waiting to see Annabelle actually up and in action.

Frankenstein vs. The Mummy -- 3/10; Well, at least the mummy looked good. Apparently, if you hit a mummy in the head, it'll ring sonorously like a glass jug.

Armistice. Very well acted. Well shot. Some plot holes, but shrug. It was a decent watch even though you'll probably figure everything out by the middle of the film. Its still worth watching. 3/5 stars.

Jigoku De Naze Warui aka Why Don't You Play In Hell (2013)
"A renegade film crew becomes embroiled with a yakuza clan feud."
Nice, smart movie with some good dry humour, awesome violence but shitty CGI blood.
If they went the old school way, the battle could've been epic instead of pretty cool.
Still worth a watch imo.
Varsity Blood (2014)
A masked killer, jocks and cheerleaders in a below average slasher.
Zombeavers -- 5.5/10; Can't wait for the porn knock-off.
I don't get all the low ratings.
True, it could've been better. But it with a title like that, you kinda know what to expect.

Therefore it should get better ratings?
I fail to see the reasoning in that.

I'm not saying it's a valid reason, I'm just surprised is all.
To me it just seems that a lot of people had high expectations for a movie called Zombeavers.

BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD (2013). OK doc on NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD that really won't tell you anything new about Romero and the film-indeed, it spends more time discussing the Vietnam/Civil Rights parallels than on how the film was made. Worth seeing, but it feels like it belongs as a Special Feature. And what is with the teacher showing the film to a bunch of pre-teens as part of class::shocked::::confused::? **1/2

A teacher showing it to pre-teens? That's inappropriate. Public or private school? Hope they got parental permission in triplicate with notary-public. ::sad::
Making too much out of social parallels to Night of the Living Dead seems very nonacademic to me -- being it's completely subjective. I'd rather see a making of - that could include Romero talking about his "intended parallels".

Pretty watchable pseudo found footage with heavy Lovecraftian influences. A reporter teams up with a Hunter S Thompson look-a-like to investigate a disappearance involving some MK-Ultra experiments.
