Basically John Wick all over again but Bob Odenkirk really killed it and gave a much more charismatic performance than Keanu. Lots of fun with some great splatter and violence.

Separation 7/10

You know it's a potentially good horror movie when

1. It has actors such as Brian Cox in it, which could suggest the general acting is quite good. And it is.

2. When the movie doesn't really contains a bad guy. Sure the mom was kind of a bitch and her dad kind of an asshole. But they all really just wanted what was best for the child. But of course you're still rooting for the loser dad.

3. There's actually an interesting story wrapped around the horror. It's not about annoying teens running around getting killed. That's a thing I've never understood in many horror movies. A group of teens with awful chemistry that goes to a cabin and half of them can't stand each other. Who would ever go on a trip with people they don't like?? Sorry... just needed to get that outa my old system.

Back to "Separation". The bad part. Except for the first 10 seconds of the first scare, which was pretty creepy, the horror was the weak part of the movie. No.. the weakest part was the lame twist at the end. Still worth seeing for the overall story and the performances.

Things Heard and Seen 5/10

You know it's a potentially good horror movie when

1. It has actors such as F. Murray Abraham in it, which could suggest the general acting is quite good. And it is.

Gotta admit, I didn't hate it.

I don't understand why they decided to call it Wrong Turn as it clearly isn't a remake. They should just haved called it "The Foundation".

The Resort 4/10

I got the impression that due to the Covid the director got the opportunity to film on a beautiful abandoned location. So he quickly slapped a garbage story together and added even worse dialogue and then took off with the crew to the resort. The movie is only saved a little bit at the last 10 minutes, which had a few alright effects. Up untill then it was just a group of 4 people exploring an island and its abandoned hotel. The soundtrack certainly didn't help as it sounded like it was stolen from a boring action/adventure flick, which did absolutely nothing to create tension or creepy atmosphere. Then it gets to the last 20-30 minutes and the director suddendly remember he's making a horror movie and changes the soundtrack. ::roll eyes::

Brightburn (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7752126/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) was overall okay, with a few buts. The bit with the eye was cool and Noah's death was well constructed, but towards the end, it did get a bit silly and cartoony. But Elisabeth Banks did a good job as the mother with the unwavering confidence. And the end credits have a great Michael Rooker cameo.

Zombies got to buy things too, right? I think a good "zombie movie" would be one where people go FAIRLY crazy and cannibalistic, but not totally crazy. Like it's living people who become infected, but they have their full mental faculties, they know who they are, and who their family and friends are, they go to work, take care of their children, but are also definitely somewhat crazy and various degrees of cannibalistic. Might be too sad... but would definitely be horror. ::big grin::

Synchronic (2020)
4/10

Two buddy paramedics deal with the effects of a powerful psychedelic drug hitting the neighborhood, including the disappearance of one of their daughters.

Not a bad start to an interesting concept, but along with rather surfacey main characters, the execution of the ending half was so incredibly long, talky, stifled, and labored. I understand the budget may have been on the low side, but that's never stopped creative filmmakers from creating some fun action and suspense when it's a good time for it. The film's ending third had lots of opportunities to have some "Star Trek" fun, but it was always blunted... a tease, and then muffled with a wet blanket of somberness. The relentless somber soundtrack didn't help, but I can understand matching the socks.

DePalma film of a former Gangster getting out of prison and determined to turn his life around, but environment and an outdated moral code stymie this.
For whatever reason, we are shown the ending of the story at the beginning of the film and it almost make's You wonder why time should be spent watching. Stick with it as Al Pacino gives a restrained performance (and I think He deserved the Oscar for this instead the overrated SCENT OF A WOMAN) and an almost unrecognizable Sean Penn nearly steals the film as his corrupt attorney. Good supporting cast, but lovely Penelope Ann Miller whines a lot (it seems like she says "Charlie" at the end of every sentence) . ***1/2

Considering Land of the Lost was a childrens' TV show from the 70s, I thought it might be OK for kids, but was surprised how sexualized it was. As a straight up action film, Army of the Dead (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0993840/) has it's merits. No memorable lines, though. Just a lot of machismo BS and all the predictable clichés.

As a zombie film, it's bollocks. Which is probably why they throw around different names for these things. Cover themselves and stuff. And the whole alpha zombie, dystopian subplot can F right off.

I just saw two comedy horror anthology films called "Fun Size Horror: Volumes 1 and 2," with a lot of short segments that turned out be very creative and entertaining, to say the least. They are also very original as well. They are not the greatest or any big budget by any stretch of the imagination, but they are still worth a lot to most horror fans, especially those into the horror anthology sub-genre. ::danger::

I wasn't expecting much and that's kind of what I felt like I got. Nothing really new to add to the genre. I called everything in the storyline before it happened. It didn't feel like a total waste of time but I wasn't entertained the entire film either so maybe a 5/10 or simply put, it was "Ok".

Suspiria (2018)

Finally got around to watching this one. I have been hesitant just because of my love of the original but I finally talked myself into watching it. I predicted the ending after the first time Susie started dancing for the leading role in front of Mother Blanc which was fine. Makeup effects were enjoyable and kudos to Tilda Swinton for playing 2 main parts, as well as a minor 3rd part in the reveal of Mother Markos during the ending. I didn't know she was playing the extra parts until looking up the film on Wikipedia. I feel I know what the director was going for but I think he ultimately fell short of creating a masterwork. I understand the setting and the events of 1977 in Germany but ultimately it seemed to confuse and slow down the plot in a way that didn't feel necessary. I enjoyed that there was more focus on the actual dancing in the school than the original film and how it worked into some of the other scenes. It was really a slow pot boiler which was fine with me. It in some ways reminded me of "The Witch (2015)" that I watched a few months ago as far as the tempo aspect but not as well complete as a whole vision. In the end I guess I would probably give it a 6/10. Maybe a 7/10 if I was feeling generous as some of the performances were really strong but I can't overlook what I feel were some of the other flaws that could have been done differently to make the film just a touch more cohesive and enjoyable in my book.

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do 6/10

The horror movie I've been looking forward to the most since the beginning of last year and of course it couldn't live of to my slight expectations.

The story was confusing but not very interesting, the lighting was too dark (probably to hide the fact that the budget was too small for decent sets) and the scares so damn unoriginal.

If we gonna see a 4th installment, which I highly doubt now, I hope they skip the "based on a true story" part and have the Warrens investigate the Overlook Hotel next.

Brimstone Incorporated 6/10

This horror anthology looked like a film school project, BUT the first story about a date from hell was delightfully loony. Sadly it went downhill from there.
I will say though that the actors in generel did a decent job (except for the waitress) and the gore effects were quite good. I just wish the actor playing the sleazy host had delivered his lines in a slower pace, because I didn't catch half of what he was saying, but I'm sure it was funny.

I might look up the directors other movie "Her Name was Christa" which includes the exact same crew.

Yeah the subtitles weren't great. I think the nurse was one of his experiments with that bird beak sewn into her head. I think the little girl must have been their daughter. He seemed to have a fascination with giving people animal abilities by experimenting with their eyes etc.

The Woods (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2644902/) followed pretty much all the beats from the template set by The Blair Witch. Good to have seen it, but nothing truly memorable. And the proposal bit felt tacked on and unnecessary.

Curious about the setting, though. It's supposedly set in Northern Oregon (and the shots in the beginning kind of look like they double for Portland), but according to the imdb-page, it's filmed in British Columbia. Only a 3,5 hour drive up from Seattle, so not that far across the border. Regardless, it makes for a lot of beautiful forest shots and that's always a plus in my book.

I got to see a few newer comedy horror films this past week. I got to see Full Moon's new comedy horror called "Weed-gies," which is about similar creatures to the classic ghoulies with similar humor that's meant to be stupid but funny, and it is funny and entertaining in that sort of way. Those into the Ghoulies series should get a kick out of that one as well. Another is "Channel 13," a comedy horror anthology that is also meant to be stupid but funny, also entertaining in that sort of way. Another is a spin-off on Scooby-Doo with a Great Dane, similar mystery solving gang that rides around in a van, called "Saturday Morning Mystery," only this one is actually more scary than funny, but it does keep interest, and they did overall a good job with it. ::devil::

SAFE (1995)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

Carol (Julianne Moore) seems to have it all...wealthy husband , house in San Fernando, gym classes, lunches with friends, etc. Close observation, You'll notice how bland it all seems and how bored she looks through it all...check the scene where she is making whoopee with hubby!

Boredom becomes the least of her problems, as her health goes into the toilet for no discernible reason. The best that can be found is all the everyday chemicals we seem to take for granted MAY be responsible. She is sent to a retreat with fellow sufferers, but this may not be a better situation.

Film (set in 1987)is good, but very ambiguous...Possible Carol's illness could be a metaphor for AIDS, as she is clearly ill, but no luck in finding what or why. Kind of scary when You think of how many chemicals are around Us all day, every day. And truth to tell, the Retreat section of the film goes on too long. However, as usual, Julianne is great and nice also to see Jessica Harper (SUSPIRIA, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, PENNIES FROM HEAVEN) in a small role. ***

MALICIOUS (1995). Extremely pedestrian flick of a guy on the outs with his girlfriend (Oddly, enough she doesn't want to be intimate in the library) who meets a Bad Girl at a party-Dressed in Black, High Heels (Shown constantly), endlessly smoking-who engages him in wild sex in the Front seat of her car and on a yacht (Topless scene here). Guy gets back together with his girlfriend, but the Bad Girl is not going to take being dumped lightly....
On its own terms, not a bad flick, but MUCH lifted from FATAL ATTRACTION and by the finale, almost a plagiarism of PLAY MISTY FOR ME. I think the creators of SWIM FAN may have seen this as they used the basic plot device involving school sports. John Vernon plays another Cop, but actually halfway likable.
The main reason I checked this out (and You should as well) is the Bad Girl is played by Molly Ringwald::shocked::::shocked::, who was so likable in all her John Hughes films and maybe figured Nudity might get her more adult roles. **1/2

4.7 is not all that bad for IMDB standards. At least not for horror. I've seen good horrors only get a five as well.

Trashy horror often only gets like 3 or even a 2.

I'll let this IMDB review speak for me, because I'm lazy.

"It takes less than twenty minutes for this movie to rattle off every millennial's basic childhood pop rock playlist. I'm not kidding-in twenty minutes I counted eight 90s songs used. Eight songs in twenty minutes, meaning the film will transition from playing Cypress Hill to Radiohead with as little rhyme or reason as someone just flicking through radio stations. This isn't nostalgia; it's cheap, it's cynical, and it's irritating, especially when it's the only thing the film gets even remotely right about the time period it's meant to take place in. Top it off with some seriously unlikable characters and it all makes for a film that felt like a rough 100 something minutes to sit through."

Started on the second one and decided very early on this just isn't my cup of diarreha and moved on to something else. That else would be..

The Borderlands (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2781832/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_2)

The first thing that struck me about this movie was how much we are now used to things like exposition. Some people, myself included, like to be smartalicky about it, going: oh look, exposition, hihi. But it has become a bit of a crutch for the viewer. So you notice that you need more time to get into the story when you don't have that at your disposal.

The story itself takes its time to build up but I have to say that it does that well. With the sounds at first and then the dog, not to mention the priest committing suicide.

But it's in the last 15 to 20 minutes where this film really delivers and makes it scary and eerie. And while the makers do a very good job with the budget they have, part of me would wish for a master of body horror to jump in and give them that little something extra. Or would you then run the risk of making it cartoony?

Don't Listen (aka Voces (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11750282/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_4)) is one of those recent films that cements Spain's reputation as a strong country when it comes to horror. Is that reputation co-cemented by Netflix? Perhaps. Once you are down the rabbit hole and all... But when it comes to content (REC, La Influencia, Veronica,...), one must admit that there definetily is something there.

The actors do a good job and the jump scares really work. Where lesser filmmakers use them as a cheap ploy, these grab you because they genuinely come from out of nowhere.

It also leaves me wondering about the themes in this film. On how much they reflect Spanish culture and the influence of religion. One main theme there is the Spanish Inquisition. Another that comes up here (and in La Influencia as well) is the importance of family. Is this a subconscious consequence of growing up in a society where Catholics present the family as a cornerstone of society? And how big is the taboo on suicide ina country like Spain?

The scene with the writer at the kitchen table takes a bit of the speed out of the story. I can see what they are trying to do there, how the ghost/witches uses your fears and traumas against you, but one cannot help but ask how such an experienced man can fall for this. But that is really the only point of criticism.

Overall, an enoyable with a few suprises and some good scares. Well recommended.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990). Remake of the seminal 1968 classic isn't as bad as it's been given to be, but a lot of gaffes dilute what could have been more enjoyable. As much as I like Romero, He really should not have written the script as too close to heart and also He declared publicly that He was doing it strictly for a chance for the original investors to make some money back. Scenes that are all but copies of the original and just becomes silly towards the end with a less than impressive finish.
Cast isn't bad...Tony Todd is probably the best choice for Ben and Patricia Tallman (KNIGHTRIDERS, MONKEY SHINES etc) makes a more assertive Barbara, even if the hairstyle is hideous. The rest of the cast are not really impressive, even normally reliable Tom Towles.
Also, the Zombies here just are not scary (unlike the Creepy ones in the '68 version), despite the good makeup job here. It also drives Me nuts how the film seems to start in early afternoon and also how the kitchen door window stays broken for so long.
This was Tom Savini's Directorial film debut and he has related that it was an awful experience for him with Exec producers John Russo and Russ Streiner shooting down any ideas He may have had. He probably wanted to get it over with, which may explain the sluggish tone that occurs. **1/2

Wrong Turn (Remake) -

Seems like the studio got the memo on the casting for this one. It's kind of funny. They only missed having an Asian character or African American female character. They could have squeezed them in somewhere as school friends of the lost group.

Still I found the movie kind of entertaining up to the twist.

SPOILERS!!!!!

SPOILERS!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!!

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok. I thought that Wrong Turn was supposed to be about Redneck inbred mutants or something. That seems to be what I caught in the pieces of the others that I saw on TV. But apparently this new one decided that The Village had a good twist and they used that. I don't hate The Village but it's not a movie I'll ever see again. I was ahead on the twist in The Village because Shamalan always has a cameo appearance. So I knew he wasn't going to play a Native American character.

But back to Wrong Turn. It's like they couldn't fully decide on who they wanted to play the bad guys. It's all over the place. And then the lead girl makes I guess decisions based on their situation. But towards the end I was thinking why are you carrying this guy's baby? I really didn't like her character at that halfway point and then didn't care about the movie.

I'll still check out the original movies. But this felt like a waste to me. The best things in the movie are the overhead shots of the dense forest. I like the idea that anything can be out there. However there are far better movies than this with that subject.

I mean, with a bar set so low it's underground, this wouldn't be difficult...
Though, good to hear. Have loved the various iterations of the comics over the year...and while I think it would work better as a series, it's nice to know it's improved.

Far Cry 5: The movie.
Yeah, I didn't hate it or anything - but they really ought to have called it something else to avoid the comparisons to the earlier series.

When I heard it was a remake, I was looking forward to something that represents more like what the first one was on tone, darker, grittier, less comedy, maybe a different version (but not that different) of the villain/s, or like, a different setting showing the family was bigger than we thought it was.

Ah well.

I still need to see Murder by Death. I keep hearing good things about it. I think that it's as good as Clue.

The Suicide Squad -

I wasn't planning on watching this so soon. But it was reviewed on HorrorDVDs. And I read something about the upcoming Batman movie so I decided to watch it.

First, I hate how they attempted to sell this movie early on. They should have titled it something different. It's feels like a sequel. And it's not a true reboot. Also, it seems like DC basically thought the director of The Suicide Squad would be able to do Guardians of the Galaxy for them.

The Suicide Squad is an entertaining movie. However, it's very violent. And mean spirited in many scenes. Almost right from the start. There are some extremely dark moments and it's disturbing at times with the main bad guy. But if you are a horror fan wait for those scenes. They are like something out of the darkest sci-fi / horror movies.

Idris Elba always gives a strong performance and he's good in this as well. Harley Quinn's character is far darker than I've ever seen in the comics and cartoons. But I guess it fits with DC movie Harley. She's still a funny character though. There is one character that is getting a spinoff and I don't know why. I'm not interested in that character at all.

I know the main bad guy from a few comics and a really good Batman Beyond two parter. I do wish that some of the Justice League showed up as this is their thing. A line discounted one of them. Even then that one line doesn't give a time period. Plus it doesn't discount the others. Nor a character they included in the Snyder Cut although that's not official. But still, it's just another example of bad development of the DC Universe.

Too bad we still don't have this virus under control. The final scene deserves to be seen on the big screen. I'll probably watch it again just for that one day when I get a really good home setup. But it's not a movie I want to own or re-watch completely. It is better than the first one though. But that wasn't a real difficult task to accomplish.

Better, if you ask me.
I think besides the game, Murder by Death was a huge inspiration for Clue.

Re-watched last night this masterpiece, the first time since my childhood. Was worried it would suck, but what a ride!

The two Peters were incredible actors, just incredible.
Cannot say what I liked more, the comedy, the atmosphere, the cast, the location, the plot. Everything comes together so smoothly.

YES!!! LOVE this movie!

"Fried Barry".
Er...weird. Quite entertaining though.
Involves a degenerate, deatbeat father junkie who get abducted and replaced with an alien consciousness.
Think...bits and pieces of "resident alien" meets "trainspotting" with a little bit of a Lynch feel, and a little bit of a Hardcore Harry aesthetic.
It's worth a watch.

Jason Rising (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7798990/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt_i_2), once again proof that fan fiction is what keeps this franchise alive throughout crappy remakes, crossovers and the bickering between the creators.

The idea of the headless mother is a bit wonky at first, but if you keep the other silliness in the franchise in mind, you get over that pretty quickly.

The film has many qualities. It ventures into the relationship between Jason and his mother, building on the shrine from part 2. It sets up the characters and their motivations and the way they evolve throughout this relatively well and the kills are pretty damn good. They have the creativeness of the original series and get to be more graphic. The upside to the MPAA not breathing down your neck.

And the kicker of course the cameo by Adrienne King. Knowing her history, especially between parts one and two, it makes you wonder how this came about and how she agreed to return to the series. Guess bygones are bygones?

Anyway, a good watch and well worth your time.

THE LODGE (2020)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

A Widowed Father takes his still grieving Children and his Fiancee to his Lodge (Think it's supposed to be the Berkshires in Western Mass), is called back into work, leaving the three - who have a somewhat dicey relationship- alone with a big winter storm moving in. Things begin to get odd.......

Potential is evident, a good sense of unease and an almost SHINING-esque atmosphere in parts. In hindsight, some parts of the story don't work. Although the Dad is an asshole, don't think He would be enough of one to plan nuptials so soon after the Children's mother dies, especially with Fiancee history. And it seems pat and unlikely that the two kids could make such an elaborate plan, seemingly off the cuff, much less have it work so well.

Not bad, but could have been much better. **1/2

Megan Is Missing (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1087461/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)

Being lazy here, I just copy paste my review from Letterboxd. ::big grin::

Turns out that I am clearly in the minority there for liking this flick. Lol.

Wether or not you should take this as a life lesson (or a PSA), is irrelevant to me. Storytellingwise, I thought it was well done.

Amy as the girl with the heart of gold, whose rebellious side comes in hanging on to Billy Bear. Which finally becomes her undoing.

Megan as the girl with the traumatic past, rough around the edges, but a layer of kindness underneath all that.

"Josh" first sweettalking Megan and then revealing his character to Amy.

The film follows the three act mode. The first part (including the party scene) sets up the characters and the mischief they can get themselves into. Which, again, is not too badly done. You may hate some of the stuff that you see and that's fine, but the idea of an abused girl ending up with an abusive boyfriend is not that far fetched. If you think about it, up until then, Megan Is Missing could easily go in the same category as Kids.

The second part (until Megan's disappearance), sets up the girls and their friendship. How, behind all the tough talk and high jinks, they are still children, naive enough to be lured in by this "Josh" character.

Then, after Megan disappears, the movie gets scary and that's what stuck with me. The tone shift in Josh during his conversation with Amy is not surprising. But then it goes south fast. The shot of Josh behind Amy as she is holding on to her teddy is scary as hell, as well as the shot of Amy getting captured. And the 22 last minutes are very disturbing, culminating in a shocking rape scene where everything is done to make sure it's as hurtful and traumatizing as you can imagine.

I am piggybacking a bit on the burial scene. One moment, it drags on and you want things to move along (ok, ok, we get it), the other you tend to think that it's supposed to drag in order to emphasize how Amy pleads for her life and how Josh remains callous to her pleas. Which reminds me of Creep and the shot of all the tapes at the end. Megan Is Missing does not need that. His methodicalness and his callousness to Amy is enough proof of how this is not the first time for him and probably not the last.

Did it live up to the expectations? Yes, because it was scary. Was it good? Interesting and intriguing are better words. Would I recommend this to anyone and if so, who? Not many people, that's for sure. It's budget, themes and ending relegate it to cult status. Only for experienced horror fans and general weirdoes.

Saved. Thanks I'll watch it for the October month. I thought it would be short but it's like a hour. Hopefully it's better than those other two. Third time should be the charm.

Every time these shorts come out I get happy about my Ultimate version though.

romanian movie about some of the horrors of communism made after the fall of the dictator ceausescu, moments here that could be placed in a horror movie for sure, shooting the baby than the woman tries to shoot herself, but no bullet so they capture her and she screams like she is being murdered

Hi there,
I watched House of 1000 Corpses last week, and The Human Centipede 2 two days ago. ::cool:: They left me highly joyful, surprised and interested. Tonight I gave The Grudge (2020) a chance, because it is available on Netflix and a friend recommended it or the original.
It was very worrying and horrifying to notice the emptiness of the movie... so standardised, so impersonal and in a way predictable. I need to accept that I have to indefinitely stop watching "Hollywood horror movies", because the stylistic mistakes in them are too much to bear.

I just read that the BBFC initially called The Human Centipede "undoubtedly tasteless and disgusting". ::devil:: From this we may conclude that the BBFC at the time featured one or more employees who don't understand a thing about movies. ::mad:: The aforementioned predicate applies to The Grudge (2020) if you ask me, and not to The Human Centipede ::love:: . (Cheers to Tom Six for a remarkable cinematographic performance. ::big grin:: )

Oh man...

Please do reply to my post, as I feel lonely in my opinions.

Grudge 2020 or the original. Got to go with the original first. ::big grin::

I didn't see Grudge 2020 and won't waste my time unless someone I trust recommends it. I watched the trailer and it just looks like a series of "something is behind you" or "something jumps at you" scenes. Some horror is style, but the trailer looked like hack visuals and hack story. I really don't know who bothers to watch this when there are some many better things to do.

I did see Ju-On (2000), and speaking of "It was very worrying and horrifying to notice the emptiness of the movie", I kind of felt that way about Ju-on. It's fairly crafty, but found it hard to relate or care about the characters and was a bit bored and found the story a bit shallow. But a lot of folks here liked Ju-On. That was your better shot at a decent flick.

You gonna try Ju-on?
