I'm not sure how I feel about the concept of the "Soul." I like the concept, but the cynic in me says that we're all just flesh and blood and nothing. That consciousness comes from that lumpy grey matter at the top of my head.

That being said, if humans have souls then I believe that animals have souls. My cats sing the blues with MD's dog.

...

But I was dropping in on this thread to articulate a more base and immediate matter - Just found out that at work I'm getting moved from one Team and my current Manager to another Team and a new Manager. Yes, I realize that reorgs happen all the time, but they literally made the reverse move about six months ago. Six months ago I was reporting to D and then they moved me under A. Just today A told me that I'll be moved back under D again.

Honestly, I like working for both of these people, so the shift doesn't bother me per se - I'm just worried that the reason why I'm getting moved around is that my department doesn't know what to do with me, which is concerning.

I was literally updating my resume to apply for another job inside the company when A told me I'll be moving back under D again. Couldn't decide if I wanted to go through with the application because I didn't want to offend D (plus I'm hoping that the move will offer more opportunities) - But still.

*sigh*

...

Just needed to get that out. Feel free to ignore.

On the plus side, I've lost enough weight where I can fit into a size jeans that I haven't been able to fit into for 4 years or so! ::cool::

Well that's a depressing thought.

Hope everything works out with you with your job Chrono

delete post. accidentally posted in wrong thread.

Well heck, as long as I'm in the random thoughts thread... why can't we delete our own posts? It's "my post" so to speak. If an adult decides they should delete their own post, why are we preventing it? If a problem arises from someone deleting their own post, then there would actually be a reason. If there hasn't been a problem, then why assume resposible adults can't act responsibly? No heat on that, by the way.

I play a lot of sports.
I do pretty well because I have excellent reflexes, balance, and hand eye coordination.

So imagine my amazement - I've wiped out on the ice twice in 2 days. (almost a third)

I'm walking to the car 2 days ago and slip on a patch of ice - but catch myself by smashing my wrist into the brick corner of the garage. I don't go down but I take all the skin off my wrist (through my jacket)

Not to leave it there - I decide that it's finally time to try to remove the 2 huge branches that broke off the big tree out front (in the ice storm) that fell across the sidewalk. They were right on top of each other.

So I get underneath one and start pushing it straight up so I can fling it onto the lawn. I get it up over my head when some branches hook themselves onto the back of my coat and shirt so when I do that big push/throw - the huge branch springs right back down on me - and flattens me in a full body face plant between the 2 branches, covering my pants and coat with filth - and removing all the skin off my left knee - like a 5 year old. (I find out later that the branches scratched up my chest and back as well)

Realizing how ridiculous I looked and still unable to free the back of my coat and shirt from the branches, even I find it too funny to be embarrassed. I'm hoping no one saw - but if they did they must have killed themselves laughing.

So I finally freed myself and continued to throw the branches off of the sidewalk onto my yard.

Wrist and knees sore - I figured I was due .. I haven't slipped on ice in about 25 years.

Last night i'm taking the kid out for sushi and I wiped out in my own doorway - landing flat on my ass - smashing my elbow on the way down. I didn't drop the CDs I was carrying and my kid was worried instead of laughing.

So I feel like I've been playing rugby.

Winter can kiss my ass.

agree...winter sucks

2 years ago I was coming out my back door...like slow motion, I remember thinking..."why are both my feet at eye level" before smashing down on my stairs right in the middle of my back....then rolling on the ground trying to catch my breath whilst looking for my hat, which for some reason flew off my head.

I want to explore this more fully at some point - but in short - I hate what social media is doing to people. Due to the nature of 'friending' and 'liking' and 're-tweeting' it's turning many many people into wannabe rock stars.

There's a lot I want to say about that on a lot of levels but the one thing I want to mention specifically is the effect it's had on movies.

People have forgotten how to enjoy movies.

Because unfortunately everyone now has a voice - a lot of folks are far more concerned with appearing to be smarter than the filmmakers than they are about sitting back and being entertained. It's far cooler not to like something ... ask any high school kid.
Negativity is cool - kindness and positivity is often seen as a weakness.

Social networking has made a lot of people regress back to their teens where they participated in their popularity contests by acting like smug superior little snots to impress their little sycophant sheep-friends by putting down what other people liked - usually to the point of ridiculing them. Their sheeple friends wouldn't want to appear uncool so they'd bleat their support for these miscreants, and the rest of us would have to patiently wait for this bunch of idiots to mature.

So now we have mama's basement bloggers and social networking heroes crapping all over anything they can to look smarter and superior to the people out there actually CREATING, while sitting on their Cheeto stained couches in their rusty trailers.

It's one of the myriad reasons I bailed on facebook .. I got so sick of morons trying to convince people that they know better then the guy with the 100 million $$$ budget.

I know there are some utter crap films out there, and I know we all have a right to an opinion - but the problem is where these goofs try to tell someone else their opinion is wrong about what they like.

(which is why I always use 'personally' and /or 'to me' when talking about something I don't like. If I don't like something and you do - fill your boots - i'm not judging ... different strokes and all that.

When I was a kid - I used to love any movie that had one thing I liked about it - effects, music, it made me laugh ....and for a while I almost forgot about that and started to fall into that trap..

Then I got a little older and started seeing things in a more relaxed fashion.
I don't see a movie for the purpose of having my life changed. Great if that happens - but basically I want to be entertained. It takes something spectacularly atrocious for me not to like a film - and that will be based on something very specific and personal to me .. I don't care if other people liked it... they aren't me... but for the most point - if I throw my money down on the counter - i'd rather not waste it. Or my time. I'll try to change my perspective, find something to like about it ... or if all else fails - try to figure out how and why they did stuff.

'Critics' scorn and would label me as 'easy to please' Well, I can think of worse ways to be than always enjoying myself. Consider the alternative.

Who's smarter now ?

I hate when people treat their opinion like it's gospel. I strike it more with music and in my younger years was definitely guilty of it myself. These days I'm more open minded and appreciative of music as a whole and I'm through with even remotely giving as shit of what other people think. I'm heading into my mid thirties so there's no sense pretending to be "cool" anymore or even pretending I know what it even means ::big grin::

I love how a lot of online opinions verge on plagiarism and basically regurgitate one person's idea usually throwing in some cut n' paste wikipedia terminology to make themselves sound articulate. A lot of bitterness out there and I'm sure these people wouldn't be able to create something remotely as good as what they're ragging on.

There was a time when I was very very angry and felt very very self-righteous about my opinions, especially when it comes to movies - And I would take that onto online forums; I know that I was definitely like that when I first came onto HDC -

But I realized that I was investing far too much negative energy in ultimately my thoughts on Pop Culture. And not only that, I was alienating my friends -

The realization came one day when my friend was talking about a RomCom and she sheepishly said to me, "Well, uhm, I like to watch movies that entertain me..." As if that was something to be ashamed of!

But then I realized that she was shielding herself from my snobby rebuke.

I don't want to alienate my friends anymore and when I express my opinions I also try hard to use the words "didn't work for me personally" and etc. because I don't want to be in a place where I make someone feel bad for the type of movie/book/entertainment/etc. that they consume.

I'm still picky about the movies that I enjoy, and what bothers me is that I think that I'm still perceived as some kind of hate-loving Hipster (example: When I wrote on here that I didn't care for Pacific Rim, I was worried that folks would perceive me as being a film snob - ::sad:: - I still have anxiety about those kinds of things) - The thing to keep in mind is that being open-minded goes both ways. People who lash out at critics still need to be OK with people not liking the same things they do.

I'm sorry that that type of negativity bled onto your Facebook, Urge - I've purged most of the angry people from my Friend list (most of them having to do with political rantings that I just didn't want to see) and preoccupy my time mostly by reposting silly pictures and memes. ::wink::

I don't consume Twitter or Tumblr or blogging sites much, either - I find it interesting how much weight people put on a one-line tweet, both positively and negatively.

oh I never for a second expect all people to like the same things - or what I like ..

I just started getting sick of the constant negativity and poor articulation - or like Elvis said - people just cribbing on other critics articulation on why they hate - everything.

the problem with facebook - is you aren't just exposed to 'friends' you're exposed to your friends friends - and you have no control over that.
That's where I saw most of the bullshit ...

I do get a little sick of critics though .. many who aren't that thoughtful - and make a name for themselves through negative arrogance - something so many people seem to worship. that's the heart of the social media that I really hate - the negativity and arrogance that is widely perceived as cool. It's an ugly side of human nature that used to be contained and controlled by eliminating people from your social circle.
Online it's become an invasive beast ... it seeps into everything ..

I have no time for negativity - as always I strive to find a positive experience everywhere I go. Online - or in the big bad real world..

Why? I mean, you can pick and choose who you actually interact with and who you completely ignore.

I feel the same way about everybody obsessively reviewing everything in their lives but I know a few people who are just as deep into reading every review of things they enjoy that they can find. It's harder to sift through the rubbish now but I do enjoy they fact that a lot of the power has been stripped from the "professional reviewer" as their motives aren't exactly clear. I'm at the point where I enjoy hearing about what people love because I think the most passion is there, even if I don't love the same things. I'm getting tired of hearing about what people hate, it seems lazy to review things with such cynicism that you come off as somebody who just dislikes everything.

Joined office on Jan 1 with a ton of pending duties. So you can guess...lately I've been very busy with office works. Anyway, it's been almost a month since I last saw some good movies.

Just before the vacation I've started 'something' for HDC ::wink:: , 70% done...hopefully within a week I'll finish my 'part of the job' & submit my 'findings' into the board for 'further discussions...additions & eliminations'.::wink::
Welcome back, Roshiq. The family time sounds heavenly. Looking forward to your 'somethingsomething'. You know we like to add and eliminate.

Well I finally got my gallbladder and gallstones out this week! I'm so glad that I gotten them removed, now I'm no longer in pain. Been pretty much relaxing and taking it easy this week. The doctors told my mother that my gallstones were the size of golf balls. Slowly recovering and my body is aching as of right now, but I'm happy that I no longer have those attacks. ::cool::

My 2-year-old has learned a new trick. She sneaks up behind me, and in a very low, whispering voice, says "KHI-KHI-KHI...MA-MA-MA!!"

Made me jump more than once.

Serves me right for watching the F13 marathon with her a couple months back I guess. Not to mention the super-stern gazes I keep getting from the wife every time my kid does this.

She doesn't like horror films. She shirks from any sort of onscreen violence. She loves animals and babies, besides cartoons. She absolutely adores cats and pups!

i guess i'm alone here - but i'm horrified at the thought of a 2 year old watching those shitty violent movies!

She doesn't watch whole movies. Her attention span is 5 minutes at most. As soon as the opening shots of the producing studio, opening credits and a few minutes roll through, she slides off my lap and runs to do something else. Stuff playing inside the films catches her fancy - like that F13 tune, Neverending Story's Falkor, musicals, Wall-E's beep-beep, Hindi film gestures, etc.

i still won't let my 13 year old watch slashers.

I let him watch supernatural and monster movies because they are fantasy.
Much harder to explain the movies that just show 'cool kills' over and over again ..

when he was a baby he didn't pay any attention - had no comprehension of what was going on on tv .. but the time he was close to 2 he was responding to scary images and music so i wouldn't play them until he was asleep..

it's too much of a gamble - you have no idea what and how certain images will affect a kid long term ..
i'd rather err on the side of caution ..

I'm sorry about that, Night. I remember I was going to comment to one of your posts, but all I really had to say was "ditto", so I thought that would have been a bit pithy or light. Like Villain is saying, folks tend to be apprehensive commenting on new members posts, because you don't know anything about them, and you have to be concerned about how they take your post. You can't give them a warm smile and shake their hand online. It's just one of those online shortcomings. I can assure you, I can't imagine there's any dislike involved, as I haven't read any post that would engender that.

a couple of years ago my wife and kid decided on a rescue dog when I was out of town.
It's a cockapoo ... it looks like a challenged muppet.

I love animals - but I have to say right now this is the most miserable dog I've every had the displeasure to be around in my life. I wont go into details - it's just an awful, un-trainable creature. (it's ONLY saving grace is that it's never done it's business in the house)
I honestly hate it and wish it would disappear.

A year after getting that little shit we got a rescue cat - so i'd have an animal to like.
The cat is awesome. friendly as hell .. lovable.

So the dog chases the cat all over the house - wont let her set foot on the floor.
He had to be kept locked in the upstairs bedroom when we were at work so that the cat could use the litter box unmolested.

About a year later - after a million tries - I got the dog to not go insane when the cat was in the library with him. He'd sniff and lunge at her but she (and I) eventually realized that he was nothing more than a bag of shit with a bark on one end.

Gradually the cat stopped running when he ran at her. several times she gave him the '30 swats in a second' on the head - and he just looked at her stunned ..

Occasionally she'll still run away out of reflex when he charges her - leading a merry but futile chase all over the house .. he cant find purchase on any of the tile or wood surfaces so he mostly runs on the spot or slides and crashes into things while the cat gets away easily ..

But now - she jumps down off of her table/perch, etc and walks right up to him ... and nudges and head butts and rubs against him.
He gets huffy, snorts and backs up - with this hurt, indignatious look on his ridiculous face because he has no idea how to react ...

Makes me laugh every time.

I need to tape this ..

Same here. I just really hope this doesn't mess with my travel plans. I'm going to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on Monday ('bout a 3-4 hour drive from where I live) and I will definitely lose my mind if the snow interferes somehow. I made the appointment to see this specialist all the way back in July! I swear I am going to get there if I have to crawl on my hands and knees all the way.

Back from Johns Hopkins without any major weather incidents. Yay! And best of all, the specialist there said he would perform the new surgery (it involves placing a stent in my tummy) as soon as possible, so I'll probably be going back down to Maryland in 2-3 weeks to have it done. I'm trying very hard to be excited about this, but there's only a 50% chance the stent will help with my illness (gastroparesis), so I'm kinda eh about the whole thing.

I think it's time for a horror movie marathon! That always makes me happy. ::smile::

I don't know if this is something you'd be interested in, but as gastroparesis suggests dysfunction or damage to the vagus nerve, biofeedback/visualisation repetition has been successful in regaining new/proper function (such increased/new nerve connections after a stroke), along with diet, exercise, etc. I just googled that, and I see lots of hits from reputable sources, which doesn't surprise me. http://www.hcplive.com/conferences/pain_week2012/Diagnosing-Assessing-and-Treating-Diabetic-Gastroparesis

Thanks, Sculpt! I appreciate all the info. Unfortunately, I have tried almost every treatment available (including the few that you mentioned, visualization, diet changes, regular exercise) and I haven't had any success. Also, I probably should have mentioned, my gastroparesis is idiopathic and not the result of diabetes. But I always appreciate any ideas and suggestions. Like the doctor I saw in Johns Hopkins said, sometimes all it takes is a fresh pair of eyes.

I'm pretty excited about it - I've been at my current company for 5 years now and I've fallen into a rather boring ops role... Just a curious random thought: can a person be haunted AND possessed?

Not that the ghost in your haunted house possesses you; but you are possessed by a demon and - in additional to that - taunted / harassed by a separate & secondary malevolent spirit or ghost while being possessed?

Would the demon retaliate against the ghost? Would he think that was terribly funny and ironic? Can demons and ghosts "double dip" on the same person? ::confused::

I wonder if there is a 'typical point' at which the actors / crew know for certain what they're making is trash. Is it typically during production? or do they have to find out in the theaters like everyone else?

I also wonder how many times it's a 180º - the crew thinks it's awesome and it's panned or they think it's trash and it goes up for an oscar. ::confused::

And by that, he'd know if it's likely to be trash. Still, even if the budget is small and the past directors work has been poor, there's always a small chance it will be a good film. But it's hard to get past a weak script.

That's good stuff. But as you say there would always some chance involved.

What I'm wondering about is the point beyond the speculation of script, money, cast, & crew when the actors know - with metaphysical certainty - that the film they're in is a festering pile of road-kill.

I'm sure it's different for each individual actor and film but - with so many films out there - might there be a "typical point" at which this epiphany occurs for the bulk of actors on the majority of films?

If there is a way to figure a "typical point", I'm missing it. ::sad::

He was on Facebook about a week or so ago. Apparently having some real money problems. Was able to keep his apartment, has a job, but is deep in debt.

What happened to V's weekly discussions?

Of course, I had to look. The first two are there.

Yeah but shouldn't there be two new ones?

Oh so you decided to give it another week to get more replies? I hope that's all it is because personally speaking I like the weekly discussion and movie of the week idea. I think its a great way to breed conversation. It might just be that not every discussion will get everyone talking

I suspect the lack of a lot of replies is going to vary with the subject matter. In my case, I hadn't seen the movie, and the subject and weeks events wasnt conducive to see it. And the debate subject, I didnt really have much to say about it; I think the statement was fairly obvious.

GOD I'm bored. I had what I thought was a promising interview with a company on Monday - I should be hearing back sometime today re "next steps" - We'll see how it goes. I've been teetering between depressed, anxious, and just barely OK lately... I should be thankful that at least I have a job (even if it does bore me to tears).

Last night I couldn't sleep. I had this great idea for a story or novel but writing it down just seems so incredibly daunting - I wish there were a plug in the base of my skull that I could slip into the USB port of my computer and transfer my thoughts directly...

I think about that a lot, actually; the idea of having a feed through the base of your skull that you could connect to others' skull so that you could communicate without talking; I wish I could do that when I'm too tired to speak but awake enough to want to still connect with my hubby... I could connect the cord between our brains and push him warmth and love as I drift off to sleep...

My hubby is a transhumanist who believes in The Singularity (f that stupid Johnny Depp movie, btw)... I suppose this is along the same lines, but if your mind is joined with someone else's, how do you control what is transmitted between the two? Maybe I don't want to share everything with everyone who's uploaded into the same machine...

Awww, Thank You. At least I currently have a job, so I should be thankful at that. ::cool::

Do you mind if I ask - What is your screenname based on?

Not at all. She is a character from the book "Dracula". She kidnaps little children at night but returns them relatively unscathed, save for the little bite marks on their necks. The children call her "The Bloofer Lady". It is more than likely Lucy Westenra.

Cool! Sadly, I've never read the whole book. ::embarrassment::

HF - Did I ever tell you that it took me at least a year into this forum to make the connection of what your screenname was in reference to? ::embarrassment:: I was always obsessed with sharks, so, uhm, I just thought you were too... ::embarrassment::
