They are just a joy to watch... the simpatico and yin-yang of the duo feels like family. I've seen a few of their films, but really I only remember the classic "Who's On First" routine. I know Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is considered some fine cinema, and I'm pretty sure I watched it with my mom, but I really don't remember anything from it. I feel like the whole movie would be one of the monsters would be behind Abbott, and then Costello would be doing is conflagration breakdown trying to tell him. ::big grin::

Hey Roiff? Where does your avatar 'werewolf' pic come from?

http://horror.com/forum/customavatars/avatar89697_23.gif

When I saw it, it eerily reminded me of this album cover:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/54/Kansas_-_Freaks_of_Nature.jpg/220px-Kansas_-_Freaks_of_Nature.jpg

That's Kansas' "Freaks of Nature". It's a picture of Adrian Jeftichew -- he (and his father) suffered from a condition called hypertrichosis. Adrian worked the circus sideshow circuit in Russia, until he was purchased by PT Barnum and brought to the US. They gave him the stage name "Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Boy". Barum came up with the performance story that a hunter tracked Adrian and his father down to their cave and captured them, that they were savage, and stressing he looked like a dog, obliged that Adrian growl and bark.

Pretty good album. Here's the title track:

Dang I haven't looked up hypertrichosis in ages. It always made me sad the way the people with it were treated. Isn't much different today from what I've seen, there are still 'dog faced boys' in freak shows. At least they're not made to growl and bark.

Love Hitchcock!

Speaking Hitchcock and the Birds...

I was just listening to an NPR interview with Tippi Hedren (the Birds, Marnie), her daughter Melanie Griffiths (Something Wild), and her daughter Dakota Johnson (The Social Network), where Tippi was talking about her last day with Alfred Hitchcock...

Tippi said that she was called in to Alfred's office, and conjured her to get-it-on with him there, when she refused, she said he forced himself on her, and she pushed him off. She said he said if she didn't comply she would have a hard time getting any work (as he held her contract). She said she told him "Do what you got to do!", left and slammed the door harder than she ever had before or since.

Yeah well...showbiz is a sleazy industry ya know.....that kinda thing sure tarnishes our icons, but I'll still celebrate their works.

Birds was real formative in in my love fer horror....saw it fer the first time from the back seat of a car at a drive in movie theater..was a double feature R.S.'s Alien and A.H.'s The Birds...that scene were the lady gets her eyes pecked out.. messed me up in a good way....think I mighta been seven 'er eight at the time.

So the other day I saw this documentary on Funk and they was sayin' 'bout havin' a hall of fame put up....well this got me thinkin'.....Horror Hall of Fame!
Saw on YT that Robert Englund did a show in the early 90's...
categories could include things like books, authors, films ,actors , directors...
gotta mull that one over a bit...

Totally agree, can still appreciate the work of the artist that isn't perfect, to whatever the unpleasant extent. And anyway, individuals don't make films, teams do. Dial M for Murder is still my favorite Hitchcock film. Did you ever see "Rope"? That's a very cool Hitch film too. I consider both of them horror.

I was about the same age when I saw The Birds on TV, and the missing pecked out eyes had a huge effect on me too.

A Horror Hall of Fame 'museum' and awards show is an excellent idea. Right now the highest honor in horror film is probably the Saturn Awards for Horror film. But ya, there's so many other categories in books, graphic novel and music, and you'd have to be thinking horror icons too.

I love story telling (one live speaker telling a story to an audience). Ever go to a story telling event? There should be an award for best horror story telling too. ::cool::

I say go for it. Those are only estimates. I usually get stuff way before the date. Plus, most places offer speedy delivery for a higher price. You can even make some calls. I didn't see it. It is a controversial issue. If we see that vlogger's video of Suicide Forest and picture/vid of hanging body as "inappropriate entertainment", then we can understand the outrage.

On the other-hand, if it's meant to shake society into seeing this is a real issue that needs to be addressed an acted upon by people with depressed loved ones, by leaders of society and so on, then is, or was, an important message. And whether the vid is taken down or not, perhaps the vlogger should not be banned, etc.

In either, or both, cases Youtube and society still has to look at the big picture of the consequences of allowing vids of this type.

There's a series of videos on YouTube that I watch called Facts. It's basically Irish people (it's based in Dublin) eating different foods, drinking different things, and watching various shows/movies/videos. There was one that had them watching his YouTube channel.

BTW, I highly recommend the Facts. videos. They are hysterical! Especially when they're drinking booze or doing things while they're drunk.

Oh, ok, that is revolting behavior. I didn't see the vid, never heard of vlogger either, just heard about it on NPR. Naturally NPR buttressed the story with some info on the 'suicide forest'. In spite of the vlogger, hopefully some good can come from attention to the issue.

But in all seriousness. I wish the US celebrated Halloween with the same importance and respect that other countries did with their dead. Here we put our dead loved ones in the ground and that's about it. We might occasionally think of them, but we don't celebrate their lives. Once upon a time that's what Halloween was about. That's what the Ma'nene Festival is about, that's what Dios De Los Muertos is about. And it's beautiful. I want to be apart of that. Because death is nothing to fear. It's another adventure.

I somewhat disliked Pat because she reminded me of someone’s boss. I also loved her because, when she spoke, she still used words like “mightn’t” and “chagrined”, as she did when she said to me, “You know what? I’m gonna chew Lorna a new hole. Again, she didn’t remember to close the transom on the Ladies when she closed last night. It looks so unfinished to me.” And then, “You know, I saw you chewin' the lips offa Rosa Tahntoon last night. That trollop mightn’t like you so much without the twenty and drinks you rolled at her. The sight of it all left me chagrined.” Pat had managed to irk me on a Thursday at 8:47 in the morning, just a mere 17 minutes since Bobby’s had opened, and when I had a hangover that would have killed most living things. I don’t know if it was my condition, the annoying skip on the Fred Waring 45 in the juker, or the fact that Pat was spewing this diatribe with breath that would smelt iron ore, but I lost composure for an amount of time. My energy lasted only long enough to allow me to shout, “Pat, you have such class, and you are a veritable fount of pleasantry. However, I am somewhat, but not entirely, chagrined that you have not trotted your cottage cheese over here and poured me another Pabst and an Irish Rose sider!” She sauntered over, poured me like she didn’t own it and wisped, “You still ain’t paid your tab. Prick.” I pondered things like children’s cereals and being electrocuted by a toaster. I lit a soggy Kool that I had found in the parking lot . It felt like Death was walking my dog. It was gonna be a good day.

What the Lino Says Back to Me at 3:00 AM

Overheard at Shemmie’s aka (There's Something in Your Bluebird)

Spee Ungle swore to me that he overheard elements of a conversation that would titillate and amuse. I was annoyed by the globs of sweat on his forehead as he informed, “I slept like a dog last night.”

He hoisted his pilsner to his lips as I provided a rejoinder. “You’re saying that you were sleeping all lonesome and afraid with a relentless hard-on. Cryssakes, Spee. I can remember when your words could still talk, and now you’ve come to this. It’s' log', not 'dog', you fuck. By the way, some passersby were heard saying things about you and the corsair.”

Spee pulled up some spine and opined with his breath and his lips and his pieces-of-corn teeth. All too close and rubbing up against he said,

“The corsair and the whispering mad-house effect, and then they tell ya that ya gotta go. She never thought. She never remembered my time in the whispering place. For the love of all that is holy, my mind allots too much time to itself. No thinking is better. Heart is better. Life will always chase itself like the puppy and her tail.”

I pulled hard into my toasted cheese on wheat and considered casket linings for the rich.

OK.....So first things first....y'all seen the count on active members? ..::sad::..

But anyway...Obsessed with the macabre and thinkin' 'bout what ta do this summer....here's what I came up with.....one, check some local haunted places....and two, visit some sites named after the devil.

So locally (by that I mean 50 miles or so as the crow flies) there's a geological formation called Devil's Gap and there's a ghost called the Camas Watchman at this other location.

Plus out on the OR. coast there's a place I've always wanted to go called The Devil's Punch Bowl. ::smile::

I think the forum really took a hit from shutting down twice like it did. ::sad::

I had been fired from more positions than ever existed at Bobby's. However, a natural currying of favor had transpired to my advantage, merely because I had become so familiar to the owner and the tenured employees there. Even though I spent more time on this side of the bar, they still remembered when I could work it back there and tongue the butter. Despite my poor work record and my being a nuisance, as well as an inveterate and incessant partaker of certain libations while employed at or visiting this establishment, I was still eclipsed, and my badge of failure rescinded, by the actions of Sheckie Carntern as he was dismissed in 1981. Upon his termination of employment after only twenty minutes, he was heard to say, "I only had the shirt on for a minute, and I made it stink.".., and "I only sported the trousers for thirty seconds, and I sh*t 'em." I remember admiring his style as it applied to his response, while I lifted his wallet. (He wasn't going to need it. I suspected he would do the right thing and check himself out.) Also, he went all abrupto pit-stain in the end. I've reconsidered my admiration for his style. Now, I just think that he's a prick.

Black Hole

My soul is an endless black hole
Relentlessly longing for the bells to toll
Darkness brings death while the light gives birth
I desire this hole closed and realize my worth
Through desolate fields of fire and ash I roam
Following a single beam of light that leads me home
What will I find when I reach the end?
Greeted by nothing or perhaps a friend?
My journey has been long and not nearly complete
I have so much to tell yet I remain discreet
So many thoughts with such few words
With no way to express what most find absurd
But when the day comes I say my peace
I hope I can smile for my soul's release

We had extra folks at our church this week. Families with kids too. It was nice to meet them. Cool peps. It was a bit nippy outside, but I was able to take a nice sunny walk through my local cemetery. Finally took the opportunity to check out this big rock boulder in the Cem. It's pretty rough, so I wasn't sure what it was. Yep, it had a plaque on it with a very cool message on it. Something like, "take the time to take in your world and universe. Look inside to your love and goodness. Show that love and goodness to the world. In loving memory of So-and-so who touched more lives than he knew."

Well... I think there have always been some critics who seem to lean heavily more as film promoters. I could be off, as I haven't researched this person, but I remember 'film critic' Gene Shalit as always being quoted for films, and film box covers, saying cleaver commercial praise for films. Naturally, I'd never believe a word he said.

But back to your question... I highly doubt it. Basically critics run by reputation. If they take bribes, or keep giving praise to crappy films, they lose their audience/readers/clicks/subscribers. It's just not a lasting business model. But I suppose it could happen occasionally.

Every single new member starts an account just to pimp their own shit. I'm no mod, obviously, but I would ban every single person whose post count is 75%, or more, pertaining to selling something or linking to something. It is disgusting.

Have any good recommendations, DBT?

I haven't read from it in awhile, but last book I purchased to read was a biography of Heinz Guderian, german general credited with developing blitzkrieg warfare. I picked it up in an antique store while my family was browsing. Not bad so far, talks about him getting married, going to war college, being in the new wireless battalion during WWI. It wasn't what he wanted, but during the war he learned what radio could do, and how it wasn't yet being used. He would eventually introduce them into tanks.

I just wanted to vent. When there's a grand total of about 10 posts on here a day (on a good day), and half of them are from members with less than 20 posts trying to sell you something...
