Another impressive addition from Tobe Hooper. There's also some interesting extra features: a not-so-commercial Behind the Scenes and The American Nightmare documentary featuring the likes of George Romero, John Landis, John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Wes Craven, and a few...ahem...film academics.
Can't wait to watch this film. And only for the second time!

Yes. double ditto yes...an awesome wonderful film, one of my faves.
I have a stupid story to tell, actually...this is purely anecdotal, but back in the 80's I used to know the guy who was the voice of the police commissioner being interviewed on the radio at the beginning of the movie ("NO ONE will stand a chance...")...his name was Maynard T. Smith, and he worked at USC's film school at the time...presumably he was a friend of Carpenter's. He was probably in his early 70's when I knew him, a nice old guy. I knew him through a mutal friend and every so often would have lunch with him. Sort of an old professor-type character. I think it was the only acting-type thing he ever did. Hey, Maynard, you made your mark!

Agreed 100% with Filmmaker. Assault is an awesome movie, Napolean Wilson is one of the coolest bad-asses ever.
I didnt much care for that particular version of Dracula however. Despite staying true to the original idea of the Count, I didnt like Oldman as Dracula at all. Nor did I like Keanu Reeves as Harker, or Winona Rider as Mina. They can all be great actors, however they were brutally miscast. On the flip side, Hopkins makes a great Van Helsing, and Tom Waits is easily the best Renfield since Dwight Frye. IMO, Coppola over-romantisizes the whole story, which ruins the character of the Count. Worth seeing once, but I know I wont buy it myself.

Went into the city to pick up some chef equipment the other day.
So, I guess, not movie related, but I've recently aquired a lot of knives, and a new uniform.
While in the city, we went into a few second hand book and record stores. Spal picked up a copy of the "office space" soundtrack for $4AUD, still brand new and sealed...quite a good soundtrack, alotta oldskool hiphop/rap goodness.
At the same old bookshop, I saw some vhs tapes, priced between $1 and $3. Didn't see anything I really wanted, but I found one, a copy of Sam Raimi's Darkman. I've only ever seen this once when I was a kid...not sure how much I liked it or not, but, being Raimi, I thought I'd pick it up.
It cost $3...and get this, when I opened the case, I saw that it was brand new, the tape still sealed, with the original promotional material still inside the plastic.
How the hell this vhs survived unopened for so long, in a bookshop no less, is beyond me. Haven't yet opened it...just happy I came across it.
Gotta love the secondhand book/record shops...cheap everything.

Yeah, I love finding shit like this too...in fact, I don't need it to be brand new and sealed, just the cheapness factor does it for me...if the shit still works, I'm down...but yeah, finding a brand new unopened vhs, that there's gold.

Yeh man its sweet. The majority of my VHS collection is $1 or $2 tapes I've picked up. Won't be too long before that shit creeps up in price like LPs tho. I remember when I first started buying vinyl that shit was dirt cheap now its become a "cool" thing to collect and the prices have skyrocketed. Been finding some pretty good trash/exploitation film mags too like Fatal Visions (you read it? it was a Aussie magazine) for next to nothing latley. Prowling second hand stores is a favorite pastime of mine.

Fatal Visions
Nah, never heard of it...
Prowling second hand stores is a favorite pastime of mine.
Mine too...gotta try get into it a little more, I always love it when I do, but never seem to quite make it often enough. There's SO many shops like that in sydney city...I gotta get out n about a bit more. Not entirely related, but a lot of antique stores are the shit too...old magazines, lil' nick-nacks...good fun.

Same here! I do like to sit down to the commentary for a good time. Best commentaries I've heard being Freddy vs. Jason (for being fun and informative) and Jason X (very damn informative). Worsts I heard are Scary Movie 3 (stupid random shit talk) and Idle Hands (the director Rodman Flender went on and on and on and didn't let Seth Green or Elden Henson speak. And he kept making connections to Suspirian and other classics. Dude, the movie was fun, but doesn't ahve a damn thing in common with Suspiria. Oh, and he kept bragging about Leprechaun 2. No lie!)

As most of you know, I am always willing to turn any thread into some sort of ad so I can go down the street and buy some hot dogs. Well, now's no exception--I have a decent, ex-rental VHS, in a well-preserved shrinkwrapped box.
Just bought it from a video store getting rid of VHS tapes (they had no idea what they had, and I wasn't gonna tell 'em). This is an old tape, and tracking is a little sticky, but in a nice clean VCR it plays okay. It's in STEREO! And if anyone wants it, I will put it up on Ebay. This film has sold for as much as $49.95. Bidding starts at $20.00.

from alan jones' website
http://www.alanj.dircon.co.uk/Main%20page.htm
'Profondo Argento' will be published by FAB Press in August, 2004. Here's the introduction:
Since the original 'Mondo Argento' published to tie in with the Dario Argento retrospective organized at London's National Film Theatre as part of my 'Fantasm 96' festival sold out very quickly, I've been literally inundated with requests to reprint what was essentially a compendium of all my magazine features, set reports and reviews on the director's work in one volume. But another carbon copy was hardly what the overcrowded fan bookshelves really needed. If I was going to write an update, it needed something extra apart from the inclusion of all the set reports I'd conducted since The Stendhal Syndrome where the first book ended. The opportunity to provide those extras came via producer Richard Journo when he contacted me to be the researcher, advisor and interviewer for his CreaTVty documentary 'Dario Argento: An Eye for Horror' (currently available singly on DVD in America via Image Entertainment and in Britain as a double-box set with Sleepless through M.I.A.) Throughout the early part of 2000 I found myself interviewing all the creative personnel from Argento's movies that I had always wanted to meet but never had the chance to do so mainly because the first Argento film I covered from start to finish was Opera in 1987.
