Holy shit thats a pretty awesome thing to own dude. I'm about to give the fucker a spin seems like it'd be a good insight to my favorite era of horror. Scream Greats was the tape where the cut scenes of Maniac were shown (and of course dubbed into the cut versions of the film back in the 80s over here). PAL versions of "Video Nasties" are something I get really enjoy collecting because a lot of that shit was destroyed over here and Australia of of course the prudes that set the ball rolling in the UK.

That seals it, I'll probably like it. Personally, I think Big Fish is among Burton's best.
Oh, and I just read the plot to Solaris again...it almost sounds like a layman's 2001. Im actually kind of excited about watching it, sounds like my style.

mighty peking man = kicks total ass! That is a crazed, crazed movie. Actually in places it plays more like a fever dream than a storyline, I don't know if you've seen it, but the "Giant Ape On The Raft Scene," with the disco musical score, well, it has a refreshingly odd quality.

i HATE that when that happens...
sometimes the company price tag or the safety seal covers the strip at the top that often indicates the format.
i'll grab a fullscreen if its cheap and the movie wont really be hampered by it that much (and there's no other choice) but i hate them.
whats with the ding dongs that create a demand for those stupid things anyway - why dont they just make everything widescreen now (or whatever the origional format is.)

Because people like my parents exist. I'll bring over a movie to watch (I only by WS as well) and they have this nifty DVD player function that they can stretch the picture to look like FS. This has the wonderful effect of cutting off half of peoples heads in key scenes.

I dont see the big deal with Widescreen/Fullscreen. I never even bother to look before I buy a movie, it really doesnt matter to me. Once Im watching the movie I dont even notice the difference, it's not like that tiny little bit on the sides cuts alot out. Uh oh, I cant see his elbow:rolleyes:. I just grab whichever is closest on the shelf, Id say I have about an equal number of each in my collection.

Eek.
It's just not right. If it doesn't matter to people, then the film should be sold in the format it was intended to be seen it.
Society is so whiny these days that they have to have every inch of their fucking TV screen in picture.
(EDIT: I'm not talking about you, Return. I'm talking about the people who WILL NOT watch widescreen.)

that boggles my mind.
it is a far bigger issue than losing an 'elbow'
a scene is shot with the entire frame in mind.
if you took a classic painting from a museum and zoomed in on the main character ... are you seeing the same picture ?
you lose the origional composition, balance, etc.
sure in a steven segal movie - who cares .. but in something someone took some time and effort with - you are watching a completely different film.
have you seent he comparrison on the back of the box ? you're missing 1/3 of the picture.
i think formatting a film to fit the screen should be banned.

You wanna know what annoys me?
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.....
They took the great full-screen images for these films and CROPPED them, to make fake widescreen compositions.
uh................................................ .THAT'S LAME.
They cropped out all kinds of good stuff when they did that. They cropped animation, mattes, puppets, all for their silly little widescreen frame.
When the film starts, even the Columbia Pictures logo is truncated. The torch lady has no feet!! I mean WTF??
This is the obverse of the other problem--it's an obsession with widescreen causing these companies to "force" a widescreen composition on movies that weren't wide to begin with.
You think Universal is going to crop Creature from the Black Lagoon or Frankenstein? No waaaaaaay! It's crazy! Never happen babe. They've done some silly nilly things, but they won't do that.

I don't think Xanadu is a horrible movie at all! It's a musical--musicals are often kind of shallow and glitzy with a head-in-the-clouds mentality. It's all about the singing and the dancing.
What I think sets this one apart is that it features Gene Kelly, and there is that past-meets-present theme going on. Brightly colored early punk rock costumes and bondage imagery, clashing (or is it harmonizing?) with Big Band style. It's not just a little weird--it's REEEEEEAAAAALLLY WEIRD. It's probably the strangest movie to come out of the early 80's, I figure.
(Adolfo "Shabba-Doo" Quinones from the "Breakin'" films is one of the featured dancers, and that too is a plus.)

Well, I mainly refer to the acting. The male lead makes rocks look more talented. I used to watch this movie when I was a kid and for years I thought he was Andy Gibb....you know, the little Bee Gee brother....like I said though, it's addictive. The rock-big band merger was a really cool idea.

Well, after watching Michael Beck's performance a couple of times, I'm convinced he is playing a sort of a messed-up, slightly unhinged, unstable artist type. That's why he seems so nervous all the time...character is unhappy internally from the beginning, even before he runs into the Muse character. (I especially like the freaky moment when he quits his job...he goes into work and screams "I'm FIRED!" at his boss. The character is nuttier than a fruitcake!)
And the scariest thing about Horror.com at this moment is that we are having a discussion about the film "Xanadu."

Haven't checked it out yet so I'll let you know. Not expecting too much from it. I'd say it'd be the usual animal killings and faked shit but there's usually one scene in this things that make you go
I mainly brought this to sell it on cause they fetch pretty decent prices. The Killing of America has been the only decent one of these type of movies I've seen..... great documentry kinda an extreme Bowling For Columbine.

Would that be like RCA Selectavision or something like that? Does it have those weird animated cards on each side that say "SIDE 1" with all the ones and "SIDE 2" with all the twos, as if you needed that to figure it out? (Gee, this is the beginning of the movie, so it's PROBABLY Side 1; or, this side starts in the middle of the movie, so it's PROBABLY Side 2...)
I have several discs that have started to get rot, and really, it's freakin' sad.

Freaks is a fantastic film. See it on the big screen if you get a chance, I saw a newly restored print awhiles back at a festival that was amazing. Defintatley one of my favorites of the classic era.

Two reasons: Im really impatient, and I dont have a credit card/Paypal account of my own. The last one is the main reason, I need to borrow money from my parents for everything I want to buy. I'd much rather just go to Futureshop or CD Plus and buy a DVD myself, that way I'm not in debt, plus I can watch the movie as soon as I buy it, as opposed to waiting a month for shipping. Another minor thing is Im paranoid about quality...just because a seller claims the item is in good condition, how can I know for sure?
Despite all this, I do end up buying a movie over the internet every couple months...but I try to avoid it if possible.

yeh I hear ya on the impatient thing, sucks parting with your money then waiting months for shit to arrive. I usually make deposits into people's accounts over here no credit card/paypal dramas and a few places and people I deal with use overnight courier so the wait isn't that long.
....and the condition thing is a bit of a worry at times especially when purchasing VHS. I haven't had to bad of a run tho the Men Behind The Sun tape I got the other day ended up being totally fucked but it cost like a dollar so whatever.... I'll put the original cover on my dub.

its not a time issue .. its the glue used and/or the way it was pressed during manufacture.
not all discs will experience rot...
the ones that have it get progressivly worse through the years - but usually the process is pretty slow.
(even then a little speckling isnt a big deal)
the Discovision discs were the 1st laserdiscs so the technology has improved vastly since

The one I got is pretty barebones...just a trailer for Special Features. Agreed that the VHS cover is much better, but you've got to admit that Denis Hopper looks pretty badass on the DVD.

Yeh its one of my all time favorite covers. Gonna have to find a poster of it. It is a pretty cool pic of Mr Hopper but it would suit being on the back rather than the front shot. I guess they figured it'd sell more if the plugged the Dennis Hopper angle.

Hostel, only cuz I couldn't burn it off Netflix.
On that note, I hate that these new movies won't let you burn em', but at the same time... that's how they're making their money. Nobody goes to theatres anymore, so the profit comes from DVD sales. It makes sense, but I guess I'm just frustrated by it.

I've got a couple of issues of FM. I never seem to strike them cheap so I just pick them up when there a reasonable price. I've got a few issues of Vampirella, Errie and Creepy. The Vengeance of Vampirella is probably my favorite comic at the moment.
Today I got a bunch of B-grade sci-fi/horror flicks on VHS (giving Attack of the Giant Leeches a spin as I type) and a few issues of Cinefantastique.

I'm a weird collector when it comes to Warren magazines...I don't have a lot of them, just a little box with "some" of them (like 20 or so), and I only have one in really nice condition. I prefer to look for really old, beat up issues, because they are a lot cheaper, and because they have a lot of character...I feel like they've been around because they obviously have ! ;)
Elvis_Christ
05-26-2006, 08:23 PM
Its criminal what people try and charge for FM and even Fangoria issues. FM is pretty hard to come across over here but you still run into the odd stash of them in junk stores. But you mainly have to rely on online auctions to pick them up which means inflated prices.
filmmaker2
05-26-2006, 11:32 PM
The thing with those FM issues, though, actually any of the Warren publications, is that they're newsprint, and that stuff is just starting to crumble, a lot of it...I'm surprised sometimes that these things haven't just turned to dust (I have a couple that are almost reduced to little crumbs, they've just turned brown and brittle!).
Yeah, the FMs are all expensive, the original run issues are all over twenty years old, older the farther back you go. I love those things, though. Sometimes I'll buy them and read them for a while and then mail them to someone far, far away, to sort of spread the love, baby.

I dont know about Reeker, but I highly recomend Dead End. If you dont like movies with alot of dialogue it might not be your bag, but I thought it was great. Easily one of the best horror movies of the last few years.

Evidently there is some extra material of Sargeant Howie prior to his arrival on the island, erotic scenes, and some other added scenes such as one with Christopher Lee's character reading a poem. However I haven't had a chance to watch these discs yet. When I do, I can give some detail of the differences.
I got my copy from amazon.co.uk, for about GBP 7.50 + shipping. However, looking at the site tonight, it seems to have gone up in price again to 12.50.

No good ones. Blockbuster has used bins, which is were Ive been spending most of my money lately, but they mostly only have mainstream stuff. Ive looked for Batman Begins there a few times, but no luck.
Other than that there's only 1 used DVD store that I can think of, and it's not on my side of town, which means I have no way of getting there on my own, which mean I very rarely go there.
There used to be a great one about 5 minutes walk from my house, but they closed about 2 years ago. I got alot of good stuff there...Suspiria on VHS for $2 being the best purcashe I can recall:)
Anyway, I staryed from Blockbuster's used bins and bought some new stuff today. Not quite the spree that I was planning, but Im still happy with it and it didnt hurt the ol' bank account too much:
-Bubba Ho-Tep
-Batman Begins
-House of Wax [2005]
The first 2 are great movies that Ive been wanting to get for awhile now, and the last one...well, Ive been wanting to see it. Ive heared plenty of bad things, but I still think it looks half-decent...

i had to check back and see if i made a typo ..
mary reilly (not maggie) its the movie where she's the lover or housekeeper (i cant remember) of dr Hyde (and mr Jekyl)
re. lawnmower man .. the origional release made reference to the short story written by S. King but he had them take it off on subsequent releases .. (they applied a thin strip of coloured sticker over top of wherever his name appeared.
re janet jackson - this is pre-boob .. looks older to me (when she still had the babyfat)
either way - her music sucks about as bad as 'music' could suck.
re. the posters .. no shining/no 2001 .. there were some cool ones though ... oddly enough 2 releases of Star Wars Empire Strikes back .. and i say odd because i already had them ... just those 2.
there is also a poster of battlefield earth signed by the director ... that must be worth 2 cents.

^^ yeh there was a bunch of great sales on like that over here for awhile. Most stores have purged all their VHS over here and everything is only released on DVD. Picked up some great shit in those sales!
DVD:
War of the Colossal Beast
had to exchange it for the Reefer Madness DVD I got the other day because it was all fucked up. I love how there's a shitload of Monster Mash kinda flicks for dirt cheap on DVD.

I just bought Neil Gaiman's MirrorMask. Any of you guys seen it? I've heard it compared to Labyrinth.

I saw a trailer for MirrorMask and it looked pretty interesting--at least there's stuff to look at !
I got my copy of Beavis and Butt-Head "BUTT-O-WEEN" a while ago, forgot if I mentioned it, and it's pretty funny. VHS of course.

Hollywood Video (Maybe all of them, but for sure the one in Cottage Grove, Minnesota) is having a VHS Clearance sale! 5 movies for $15 bucks!!! Not only were the movies $3 each, but the sale must have just started so the shelves were pretty full still. Score!
I only had a $20 on me so I just grabbed 5 today, but I'm goin back tomorrow to clean them out.
Today I got....
The Eye
Black Christmas
Darkman 2
Darkman 3
The Hobbit (Cartoon)
all for $15! Sweeeeeet.
Okay, I went back to Hollywood Video last night & scored another 5-some of kickass flicks for the unbeatable price of $15.
Round 2, I picked up....
Dog Soldiers
The Killer
Necronomicon
House of 1000 Corpses
Anatomy
I'm still planning on going back for more too, but I may have to try some trickery to outmaneuver them this time around... They have certain movies on VHS that they aren't selling, but the only way they are identified is by a sticker on the outer plastic casing. All it would take is the ol' switcheroo and movies that aren't for sale, will magically become for sale. I might have to do this because most of the ones I want that they have left, they aren't selling... Monster Squad, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Prophecy, Childs Play (All of them) etc...

I was pissed the other day. At the Movie Gallery, they had a copy of Vertigo on DVD in the sell section. I knew it wasn't supposed to be there, but I was tempted to peel a sticker off of any random flick and put it on the case. Hell, the only attendant was outside smoking a cig. I probably could have switched every price in the place had I wanted.

I did. That's how I know the sticker means those are the ones they won't sell.

It annoys me....there's several stores around here selling their used VHS rental tapes, but they're generally at least $3.99, and one store wants $5.00 apiece for these things. The expensive store has FIFTY MILLION tapes and they'll never sell them all for five bucks! Begrudgingly, I have shelled out a few dollars to get a rare title here and there.

One store I brought a bunch of VHS from had fill a box for $40 (pretty big boxes too). Another place was just charging $2 a piece. I only found out about the place a couple of months after the sale was already on so I probably missed out on some good stuff. I managed to get a heap of cool/rare shit regardless and I was happy. I usually only buy VHS if its dirt cheap but do part with round about $10 (NZD) for pre-cert video nasties just because a lot of them are impossible to get. Hopefully I'll run into another sale like you guys have to fill in some gaps in my collection but I think I own the majority of horror flicks most of the mainstream stores carry..... but every store has its gems!
DVD:
Horror Hotel

I remember catching some of it on TV as a kid. It was in the cheap DVD bin so I thought I'd give it a day in court. My give it a spin tonight after I'm done with Frankenstein :)

I picked up Scream today...
I swear, Im addicted. I go into to Shoppers at lunch hour, with absolutly no intention of buying a movie. Hell, until today I didnt even know they sold movies. All I went in for was a snack, and all I came out with was a snack and a DVD.

The EB Games near my house is having a 3 for $10 sale. Which I think is amazing. And they also have a Buy any 2 get 1 Free. They are all used DVDs but who cares because the people who sell them back buy them, watch them, and then sell them back. None of mine ever have scratches on them.

By comparison, obviously Im nowhere near someone like you. But for someone my age, with a minimum wage part-time job and who has only been a real movie fan for a year or so, I'd say Im well on the road.
