"Fallout 3" ps3

Getting better and better, but i'd still prefer a new Elder Scrolls.

Yes, i'm old'n medieval.

Totally Agree.

Took advantage of my bro's xbox and high def t.v these past 3 weeks.

Beat Gears of war 2(Thought first was way over-rated, but I love both of them now).

Beat GTA IV. Started playing Orange box, Great deal for the Great Games.

So I loved fallout 3. As mentioned by Angra a new elder scrolls would be better(old 'n medieval myself) I was very surprised how short the story was, I got to the last part and accidentally saved(along with my auto save) and couldnt go back, so I had to go to an old save to go through alot of side stuff.

My bro played Resistance 2 and can anyone tell me why it was so great? Personally we both thought it sucked BIG TIME. I think it is one of the most over-rated games EVER and in no way should have gotten such high scores.

Left 4 Dead was pretty cool but I got bored after a while, I don't have online and thats the big draw but it was still cool and the random hordes freaked me out when you could hear them coming.

Playing through Fallout 3 for the 360 for the second time... Just trying to wrap up the quests that I didn't get around to the first time around and avoiding the really big quests.

Also just picked up a PS3 (the Blu-Ray player that we wanted was sold out so we decided to go for the PS3) and with it Little Big Planet.

I was just kidding, even with Gary's Mod I could only "build" for a little while at a time before wanting something a bit more linear in design. Remind me, on Left 4 Dead can I play on my XBox online with you and your boyfriend on yours? I forget if you're allowed to have multiple people on one console online.

I traded in my old GTA collection and a couple other not-so-great ps2 titles at EB games. I always thought I'd want to hold on to the entire GTA series, but after playing 3, VC, SA, LCS, VCS and 4...well, I went back to play Vice City, and the control scheme was just so damn different back then, ha...kind of ruined it a little for me....although I kept my copy of San Andreas because it's a bit bigger, had a better control system, and well, I couldn't trade in the version I had on account of being something you could access "hot coffee" mode on?
I dunno...

So the girl got the latest need for speed which isn't really great on ps2 compared to other versions...she's taking that one back and choosing something else.

I got some "older" games,

The Thing which I think is great, never played more than a third of it last time though.

True Crime: LA, which I'll probably be taking back...seemed an OK game but the driving was just waaay too arcadey and crappy for me to accept.

Total Overdose - this one seems pretty cool actually, a keeper I reckon...it's a little bit GTA, a little bit POSTAL and seems to be pretty funny. Control scheme's a little different, but the kind I could get used to - bit like "gun".
Only played a mission or so thus far but I'll stick with my initial assessment.

So don't know what I'll trade TC in for, probably some fighter...but right now out of the ones I have, I'll more than likely get into The Thing again.

It's pretty fun.You get to play a biker in a gang.you ride around with your gang and kill other gang members.Have these really big gang wars which can be pretty hard.

ps2 - Run Like Hell
Bargain bin 2nd hand purchase...bit of an aliens ripoff, but overall quite atmospheric and good, worth checking out.
Lance Henrikksen, Michael Ironside, Kate Mulgrew and Brad Dourif play some of the cast.

I remember, I actually saw a trailer for this some years ago...always wanted to know what it was for. It's funny how you come accross things like that.

The combat leaves a tad to be desired but the storyline is cool, and the feel is there. Maybe worth a check out if you haven't yet.

Also played through "total overdose",a pretty fun max payne meets gta kind've title.

Gave that Watchmen DLC game a spin over the weekend, pretty satisfying really. I didn't want to relive the story I just want to kick highly efficient arse. It delivered in that and got NEARLY finished before the inevitable tedium of beat-em ups kick in. Satisfied me, and for less then the damn Iron Man game cost me just because I wanted to fly around in armour fighting choppers after watching that movie.

I would say the same about Bioshock. ;)

But yes, what you've heard is not far from the truth. The fact that it all begins in brought daylight does very, very little to the horror. It's just 2 people against a whole town of insane africans. I wouldn't call that horror, I would just call it action. Just like i would call the movie Gymkata an action movie and not horror.

Unlike the new Silent Hill which i coulnd't stop playing, i already had to take a break from RE5 after only 40 minutes. Gonna play again in a little while tho.

That being said, I think that Dead Space is one of the most gorgeously gruesome games that I have ever played. Wish I wasn't such a pussy. :o

I was playing Fable II for a while but, well, as you can see my rant in that thread, it frustrated me to a point of putting it down. There's very little substance or challenge in it. HUGE disappointment.

I think you have some wanderlust in your eyes there champ, it's passable considering it has wooden emotionless characters and a level of predictably along the same lengths as a Disney movie.

It's certain a gorgeous game, with all it's flickering lighting and well designed monsters. It's also very satisfying with it's high tech weapons and time slowing powers.

Though on the topic of it's story I found the movie/comic thing they released for it to be pretty entertaining the psychological elements were more shocking there I thought. You should check that out if you get a chance Posher.

In other news a just dusted off RE5, it was OK. The opening section is never really matched though, some nice set piece battles and some huge boss fights, in the end though it kind of just putters along with feeling truly compelling or horrifying. I miss the scary old days of the haunted house.

I can dig both types of horror games, the brooding atmospheric chillers and the action packed monster slaughtering simulators. There's the occasional game that crosses into both territories (RE: Nemesis really pulled the series from the creepy zombie game and injected tons of action IMO) but I try not to judge a game by the genre it's in, rather, if I have fun with it or not. D was creepy as hell but it was lacking a bit of the interactivity I like with my games, Clocktower had a similar situation going. Do I like those games? Sure, they had some really cool moments but I won't be playing through them again anytime soon.

The Thing - PS2.
I never bothered finishing it back in the day, got just past the first boss type thing as I recall...however, I find I'm a bit more patient now, so I'm giving it another go.
Forgot how fucking tense this game can be...it's really atmospheric and works as a great "sequel" to Carpenters 80's version.
Even though a little dated, I'd definately recommend a playthrough for anyone that wants to experience a pretty scary game.

Good stuff.

Just picked up Ultimate Spider-Man, and something called "Vexx" that I know nothing about (again, random "not so well known" stuff on ps2) which I might play around with a bit today, but I'll probably see The Thing through to the end.

Here's a little snippet from a quasi-review that might make a little sense.

"Playing through it again with Kiko, I'm still trying to figure out how the game isn't scary. I keep reading that it isn't, and everyone seems to agree with this thesis, but no-one ever says why. It's true that the game relies less on what you might call "Pavlovian" horror - it doesn't ring the expected bells. There is no haunted house, for example. There is a marked lack of jack-o-lanterns, and black cats are rare. When I run out of ammunition and five men are trying to kill me - one of whom has no head but rather a lashing, six foot trunk of slick vermin, I know that I personally find that unsettling."

Azazel005
03-23-2009, 05:06 AM
I'll answer the question fielded in that quote Des. It lacks genuine thrills not because it fails to lean on "pavlovian" conditioning cliche's but because it's elements both allow you to kill too efficiently and the impact of it's monsters lack any sort lasting fearful impression after the thirtieth one you massacre. Also the shift from "Survival" to "Offense" makes you characters seem more like highly trained spec op zombie killers rather then victims fighting for their lives. Not necesarily BAD but not scary.

The exampled cited, I never once had to stare down one of those infected men whose parasite had morphed the mans head into a lashing tendril without a copiuos amount of ammo and explosives at my fingers. In fact I took on three or for of those things at once on many occaisons. The first time it was perhaps a bit of "FUCK what is that?" but then it's just one zombie against my shotgun. After that they pop up I waste them, busines as usual.

At times it is scary, the game can do a good job of keeping monsters popping up all around you and placing a tense sort of pressure on you, in full context though it doesn't scare you, becuase you just kill so many monsters and so efficiently.

Its not to say I didn't like it, and I truly love mercenaries mode, but it's not scary. Not in a condictioned response sense, nor in any genuine tension building desperate way that the first three delivered. I will add though virtually all of that applies to Dead Space in my opinion as well. In fact Isaac Hayes is even mroe efficient at killing with his time slowing powers and wide array of lethal useful weapons.

Are you playing it on the hardest difficulty level?

The default. Though it doesn't make as much difference as you might expect. I generally play any game based around shooting accurately on the base difficulty, while I have good reflexes I have poor fine motor control. I'd never be a very good sniper that's for sure.

I assume by hardest you don't mean the unlockable difficulty just the hardest available at the beginning. My experience with that difficulty was not really one of a greater strain on your ammunition but enemies will kill you that much faster, most in one or two strikes. It's just more likely that you will be killed by an enemy in your blind spot. It didn't really increase the tension, you just have to improve(after going through the game once and unlocking all the mercenaries characters I'd probably cruise through it) it doesn't change the fact that you will still be doing battle with hordes of enemies all of which you will need to learn to dispatch quickly and efficiently. Higher difficulty just punishes you worse for poor accuracy.

I could just try playing with an eye patch or a controller with a sticky trigger button, sure that might make the challenge greater but it's not going to change the balance of what goes on in the game Des.

There is less ammo AND there are less heals available at the harder difficulty levels, and while I haven't played through the game at that setting I have tried it and it does increase the dread. The eye patch thing is ridiculous, I'm not saying to alter the way you play the game but to try the harder levels that the developer has included to increase the challenge. I don't think RE 5 is a straight up survival horror game but I would classify it as action horror. I think it's great that they are delving into a different sub-genre but personally would like to see the claustrophobic, zombie filled adventures of the past revived... it's time. Ah well, I'll just have to grab Killing Floor when it comes out and play some more L4D to sate my zombie thirst. I still hold strong to my opinion that running away from a giant axe wielding maniac while trying to find ammo was exhilarating and RE5 isn't as bad as the rap it's getting. Every medium has their snobs and nerds though, and that's cool, but no matter how much you pontificate it will still be just an opinion.

EDIT: I do see where you're coming from, the issues you have with the game are not lost on me, I just disagree with writing off as a "horror" game completely simply because of the broad definition of horror.

Longtime gamer (like since before 1980), but don't have the time I once did for it. Play a lot of World of Warcraft, though not as much today as I once did (Horde, if you're curious.)

Picked up Left4Dead for my X-box yesterday. Played a little bit. Been playing FPS games since the original DOOM, but haven't played them for several years. It's an interesting transition back into them. Left4Dead itself seems like it wants both survival horror creepy and "unload the ammo you've got against the hordes" gameplay of something like Robotron (for you oldschool gamers). There's certainly a good dollop of creepiness and fear, feeling like everything you know has been overrun by psychotic masses that want nothing more than to eat you. I'll have to play it a bit more to really get a feel for it.

Though I will say that playing even with AI buddies takes a lot of the fear out of things. You're not alone, and even if your friends are robots, they're still there to help you out when a hunter lunges onto your face and starts biting down.

I love playing that multiplayer but the AI is a little boring to play with. The best parts are the final battles of the levels and witches who inject a much needed sense of fear into the game. I love blasting through hordes of zombies with friends only to hear a distant crying before yelling at everybody to shut their flashlights off.

EDIT: I do see where you're coming from, the issues you have with the game are not lost on me, I just disagree with writing off as a "horror" game completely simply because of the broad definition of horror.

I'd certainly still classify it as a Horror game, I just don't think it's scary. It's a pretty awesome game, and the example you cite there is a highlight, not too mention jumping through windows pushing a bookcase in front of the door then spinning back to the window fire down on the slow encroaching hordes on your tail in that same area. There are some truly great set pieces like that which are tense and exciting, but tense and exciting more in the vein of dancing around cover in GOW or diving out of lines of fire while your shields warning signs beep in Halo.

RE5 is a really good and for the most part satisfying game. I mean it is AWESOME to be a duo of highly efficient zombie dispatching spec ops agents. I just didn't find it that scary, as blithered on about ad nauseum. It's horrific, battling hordes of zombies risen from innocent infected civilians and tribal men I don't think one could say it is not horror.

Mercenaries mode too, THAT is some sweet very tense stuff. It's like all the best bits of the game in action packed bite sized bits.

So.... what is there to say about "Godfather 2".

First off, not much has changed since the first game, except your henchmen has got themselves some more personality and different specialities, which is cool. You actually care if they live or die now. Also, this time you don't start as a henchman yourself but as The Don of your own new small (to begin with) mafia family.

Where the first game was based on the movie Godfather 1, Godfather 2 is based on.... you know the rest.

Other than that it's pretty much the same all over again. You wanna expand, you wanna get bigger, you wanna get richer. Just like the GTA games... Neither the graphics has changed magnificently since the first game.

Quake 3 was the best of the pack , i think, meant specifically for online though.
For online I can see how it would be...but for me, I'll say it again, if a game can't hold it's own without being played online, there's a serious lack of effort there. There IS a single player mode I know, but it just plays like a watered down online match anyways. That said, I think for games of this sort the UT series (or even just the first one vs Q3) did it better.

Quake 4 is a bad doom 3 clone.
That's a bit of a bitch to hear...I didn't even like Doom 3.
Ah well...I suppose it's cheap enough now to check out.

So I started on two games.
GTA: Liberty City Stories which I'm sharing with the girl.
and King Kong.

Liberty City is just run of the mill, even though it's a port of a PSP game it comes off as WAY more polished than GTA3 ever looked...kind of works like a side story/different character & missions to GTA3, the place looks the same.
It's fun...though I don't really like the selection of music on this one, as I can recall the next spin-off to come out was much better.

King Kong.
I'll start off by saying I didn't think all that much of the movie...it slightly exceeded my expectations but really just not my thing. I'll also say that I've thus far played as both the human and Gorilla - I HATE playing as the gorilla...while the swinging off trees is kind've cool, the climbing is tedious and the combat is pathetic.
The human mission though, quite the opposite.
It's not really an FPS though that's how it presents itself.
Once you get the hang of the buttons, and the feel of the game which at first just seemed weird, it's actually very good...love spearing things, ha...the limited ammo is great as it gives you a real "survival" type vibe, the atmosphere is
really well done and always keeps me on the edge of my seat. It's actually a pretty innovative game (in this part) with few faults.
My only real problem with it, is that it's a bit difficult/easy to die...I've died a lot.
But I'll be playing this one to conclusion if I can.

I'd really love to see this game on a high end pc - you can tell that it's just a BIT too powerful for the Playstation 2 to do as well as it could at the time of its release.

If you have a pc capable of it, I suggest on that basis.

But i DID manage to bake a cake.
In your pants?

I'm about to have a go at a couple of games that people seem to really like...
Recently I obtained an original xbox incredibly cheaply. A few of my friends had/have this system so there was no shortage of games, and I borrowed some.

The Punisher - While I like the concept, and how this game conveys the story, I have a few problems that will more than likely make me end up not bothering to finish it. I've given it three stages so far.
*Your character is slow and clunky, I mean sure he's a big guy and all, but when you're walking around for my liking it just feels too damn slow - I get that it's an older game now, but I've played even older games with significantly faster movement.
*The rage mode or whatever, just seems stupid and pointless...sure it gets through a few enemies but I think the whole thing is just fuck ugly and stupid looking.
*No sensitivity adjustment for aiming - which I also consider too slow.
Other than that I have no real issues, though this kind of thing is more than enough to spoil an otherwise good game for me.
Another thing is that it's a console version, and I have recently confirmed to myself that I just don't like this style of game on console. FPS's, sure, I prefer them on PC but I can get the hang of them on console not so with the TPS's, with very few exceptions, they just feel uncomfortable to use.
I may pick up the PC version of this game to see if I can get around any of the aforementioned issues and better deal with the control system, as there were elements of this game I liked. The character I like, the storyline seems ok, using human shields and torturing folks is a bit of fun too.
Time'll tell, might get a much more favourable review if I play it on pc.

Manhunt
So, I finally got to have a look at this controversial title.
Didn't actually know it was a Rockstar game, though it seems right at home in their collection. I like the concept of this game, a lot.
I do not like a few things though.
*Control system...not being able to use the second stick to turn the view around with the camera, rather it goes into "look around" mode instead. I just don't like this, and many times found myself TRYING to get a better view when an enemy was approaching, only to fuck myself over in this manner.
*The sneaking around. I usually avoid "stealth" games but this one I thought I'd give a go as it seemed essentially more than that...but it's not really...sure you can fight but you're pretty much a pussy, even with a baseball bat that should have a guy down within a few hits needs to be employed about 14 times.
*The hiding seems WAY too hit and miss for me, and even though you're told at the beginning of the game that enemies are unlikely to hear you if you proceed very slowly, but any time they're within radar range, no matter what I do they go into orange alert.
*Sneaking up on them, annoying when they're walking faster than you.
*The "bad guy" dialogue is shitty and repetetive.

I like the concept as I said, and the overall atmosphere is very good...but unfortunately I'm pretty certain I won't be persisting with this one beyond a stage or two more. While I like being able to off people, I hate having to basically CRAWL my way through the game to make any kind of safe progress - proceeding just takes too damn long IMO, each small area stage taking some 20 minutes to complete safely, in all honesty I found myself getting more bored than anything. I'll probably switch it on once more today, but yeah, I think this is more a case of it just being a style of gameplay that I don't really like.
The Warriors, Max Payne, Canis Canum Edit (Bully), are IMO all better examples of Rockstar games set outside the GTA universe.
Bit of a pity...I really do like how they set this game up..

Red Dead Revolver.....
I remember playing one that came out around the same time "dead mans hand"? Looks kinda similar, but wasn't great - was RDR any better? Never knew that was under he R* lable.

I've rethought manhunt.
It had a saving grace - the ability to change the control system was actually present in this title (unlike how you CAN'T fix the sensetivity in the Punisher) and now I can use the left stick to move, the right stick to turn around.
It's SO much better.
While I'm still not entirely into it, as I don't dig stealth games, this change has made it easier to make a LOT more progress in the game, and it does present a challenge.
I have found what some of you may consider a more "legitimate" problem I have with it though...it's a bit damn repetetive...kind of reminds me of old atari games, the further you get it's just more of the same, but rising challenge. But yeah, it seems like thus far all of the bad guys pretty much behave the same...bang a wall, get them to approach, they look but don't venture into the shadows, they turn, you follow, you kill...I've done this about 20 times now.
However, they are now kind of in "packs" which has risen the challenge level, oh and I found a nailgun.
Still though, for as much as I like the concept this games still not really for me.

I have heard a bit about the second one...a lot of people seem to hate it on account of the censored kills? But the storyline sounds better to me.
Has anyone played it? If I go ahead and finish the first one I'll probably at least give the second one a try.

I have Dead Man's Hand as well. I always preferred Red Dead Revolver. It's a slightly less dark kind of game, and feels like you're playing a Clint Eastwood type western. It's not the best game in the world, but it's better than DMH. The quick-draw segments are fun. Oh, and it's 3rd-person, not 1st.

I haven't played it, but from what I understand, all the gory bits are either blurred over, or gone black and white, similar to The Punisher. I believe you can un-censor it, by using a GameShark or CodeBreaker.

Yeah well, you'll see what I mean.
Hans is a good starter character, Gort is the old guy in the bar, might not talk to you straight away but trust me, check in until he does.
Also, asdive - don't level up your characters right away, let them continue getting more exp, if you level up as soon as you're able, they can be initially weaker in their second form.
So what, you're playing this on an actual console.

BTW - Playing the xbox remake of "conkers bad fur day".
It's an interesting game, but has some really stupid finicky shit in there too. I've fallen to my death SO many times, bad swimming levels, and areas that while completely accessible, will be useless until you've completed certain tasks...feels like a bit of a run around. That said though, it's a funny game (not sure about the n64 version for the following, but) graphically VERY nice, of moderate challenge and some interesting "boss" fights.

This game is pretty shit. I had hoped for a moderately challenging, Resident Evil type on the Wii but the controls are crap and there is alot of aimless wandering without a map to find your way. Dead Space
My cousin managed to get through the asteroid hell after an hour of irritation.

Took me a few good ol' "college tries" myself... lol! The octopus-monster that hucked sh*t at you, pissed me off way more.

Kinda want this one, but it looks like more FPS with very little story... Is that true? Or does it have some story?

Playing Final Fantasy: Crysal Chronicals on the Gamecube. Adorable. Really enjoying this one.

I'll be honest... story is only "meh", and its heavily weighted to FPS combat and missions. Not alot of thinkings; tons of shoostings!!! :D

With your aforementioned preferences in mind, I wouldn't see you enjoying it....

Forgettable story with some humor tossed in to make it a little more interesting. Very "loot" oriented, almost like an FPS bred with Diablo in the Fallout universe but decided to keep the RPG elements super light in lieu of shooting the crap out of stuff. It's a blast in co-op though.

Continuing to obsess over Requiem. Best mmorpg i've ever played. (Beats WOW by a long shot, and is just a step above 2 Moons). Finally pushing into high levels and becoming an all out bad ass.

Good to know. Thanks, Guys. It's not that I have anything against FSP's... I'm just really REALLY bad at them, so I need an interesting story or setting to get me through (or something like VATs in Fallout 3)... Bioshock, for example, I LOVED, but completely sucked on the shooter end of things.

And, well, Des has witnessed me play Left 4 Dead.

I'll save my money on "Borderland." The boyfriend might decide to pick it up, though, so at least I'll be able to try it out without paying for it. :D

Tried Sacred II today. Considering that this is a game for the 360/PS3 consoles, I find it a bit disapointing. Doesn't really do a lot for the grenre that hasn't been done by Diablo II YEARS ago... The UI is overly-complicated and confusing and I find it lame that you can't trade with people unless you're playing with them live, and that all loot is pre-allocated when you're playing with other players... Diablo II and Balder's Gate did it better.

Still enjoying Crystal Chonicles, though. Simple. Cute. Looking forward to Bioshock II and Dragonage for my more "complicated" games... Will probably get the boyfriend Left 4 Dead II for his Birthday in January.

"Assasins Creed 2" PS3

That's one of the longest and most boring intros i've ever played.

Slowly starting to get fun tho.

Well, myself and the chick recently acquired a couple of Nintendo DS's, and got these cool little devices called DSTTs for 'em, so I've had a fair few games to look at.
First of all, I don't think FPS games work on this system...at all...then there's the pissy versions of the games that come out on 360/wii/PS3, those are not really much good either, though the exclusives to DS are really quite good.
Using the stylus thingy is a bit annoying in some cases (prince of persia...click-to-go-here system) but not nearly as annoying as I thought it would be, and quite clever/intuitive in some other games, eg cooking mama.

I'm looking forward to playing the continuation of one of my favourite series, the title being "mario vs donkey kong 2" which is the third game starting with the gameboy/gameboy colour version of Donkey Kong, which if I haven't mentioned it is one of my favourite puzzle themed games ever.
Though, I'm leaving that one be for a while.

I saw a trailer of the game I've been getting into a while back, and I'm having a fair bit of fun playing it. Called "Lost in Blue", and is apparently a spiritual sequel to a series of games "stranded kids" featuring on earlier systems...though nothing to do with them really aside from theme, that being "Lost on a pretty much deserted island".
You have to forage for food, keep yourself warm, fed etc, while exploring the island, hunting for food (spear fishing with the stylus is difficult but fun), managing resources, building things, and basically staying alive.
It's not an easy game though..."learn by dying", I'm just about to start the game from the beginning for the third time. Though, it's a fun game and keeps you wanting more.
It's a bit like...Ico meets zelda.

Try Moon, once you get the controls they're easy but it's not a lot of shooting, VERY atmospheric and a wonderful Adventure/FPS.

I have Moon and Dementium.
Not played either yet...but yeah the version of COD4 they had on there didn't look so great, and yeah you had to control it by using one hand on the left/right of the DS and one with the stylus...I honestly doubt my "ability" in a combat situation if this is the only control scheme available.

What other DS titles have you got into?

Left 4 Dead 2.

Just like a polished version of the first one. Haven't played through all the campaigns yet, but the few I have played are quality. The new special infected are cool too.

Here I am with 100+ ds games, and I'm still just stuck on "Lost in Blue".
It's even a bit BORING haha, survival crap...but, something's hooked me to want to finish it.

Though I had a quick look at "wireway", nice looking bouncy puzzler.

Also the sonic games on the ds are IMO the first time since the 16-bit era that a sonic game has felt remotely familiar, like, what if they advanced the game in ways OTHER than 3d...
