No need to apologize. Much to my dismay this forum does not revolve around me and my posts. :p

I beat Bioshock as "Good," so I think it really helped me get to a point where I was ultimately a powerhouse and the enemies weren't a real threat to me... Which took some of the challenge out of it. Then again, I was playing it on "easy." hahaha

How about you?

And if you like horror-based video games, have you picked up either of the Condemned games? Bloodshot is pretty damn good and I'm making my way through Criminal Origins now.
I have not checked out the condemned games yet. however, as soon as i have cash to burn, im going to get orange box, since i have been dying for that since it was announced over a year ago.

I beat Bioshock both ways, and the good ending is infinitely more satisfying. Killing little girls for a marginal gain in power just doesnt work for me.

Orange Box, Orange Box... I think I might have to pick it up, too.

As for the Condemned games, you can get them pretty cheaply from amazon.com. Another option is The Darkness, which was a lot of fun (and I know that VC and Mothman especially loved). You can probably get those used pretty cheap. :)

Orange Box was fun for a bit. Not really my favorite type of game though. Very repetitive. Run, open door, get back to path, repeat. Very straightforward and sometimes confusing. I'll get the 3rd one of they decide to make it, but I will wait til it comes down in price.

Which part of Orange Box? Ep. 2? You can't be saying that Half Life 2, Portal, or TF2 are straightforward...

I couldn't play Team Fortress 2. I don't have XBL anymore.

Portal wasn't too repetitive, but it only lasts about 2 hours tops.

Half Life 2, Episode 1, and Episode 2 were all the same. Very repetitive. Come on, you run, come to a blocked exit, have to go find the power to unlock it, then go all the way back to your main path. Regardless of if you're in a car, air boat or on foot. It was the same thing in each part of the level. It had a pattern that I caught onto very quickly.....And it only lasted about 12 hours for the whole Orange Box experience.

In HL2 there are driving sequences, parts where you're going through a ghost town on the rooftops avoiding certain doom, and hell... there's even a part where you're fending off zombies in the dark (with only a few flares for illumination) while your partner fixes an elevator. The gravity gun makes for some easy but inventive puzzles and the physics allow you to be very creative with the way you dispatch your enemies. I can't think of many FPS games that don't usher you from point A to point B...

But that's just it. The puzzles don't have enough variety. You basically have to do the same thing with the Gravity Gun, every other puzzle. Look at BioShocks puzzles. They were unique, and had enough variety in the game feel.

Yes, you did have that ONE zombie level, but that was it. You have to drive the car, and the airboat, and you're doing the same thing with both of them. You can't get out for whatever reason, and then you have to stop to go make an opening for them. Then get back in, and it lasts over 8-9 segments of the same thing. Same for when you're on foot.

As far as other games, they do to a degree. But it isn't the same. The Tomb Raider: Legend game that I just finished playing, had some interesting puzzles. And they weren't every 5 minutes. It had enough of an action/puzzle mix, that it didn't get repetitive.

You're comparing a 3rd person action game to an FPS... it seems like you just prefer one genre over the other. For me Tomb Raider was an overhyped platformer that failed to deliver solid controls or a decent decent story and simply rode to stardom on the ample knockers of Lara. To each their own, I won't get after you about your opinion but stating that HL2 is repetitive is a ridiculous statement. It is a linear experience that can be played in different ways with a brilliant story that's executed almost flawlessly. The excitement from escaping the combine, the thrill of fighting a strider, the rush of running through the sand trying to avoid ant lions, the strategy of setting up turrets to fend off a combine attack, the joy of fighting off a gunship from a catwalk... some individual sections can be repetitive but they're few and far between and that's the nature of the FPS and HL2 sets the standard as far as level diversity goes. Even the "non-linear" Far Cry didn't throw such different scenarios at you. To feel that Tomb Raider is better is your opinion and you're welcome to it but to say TR is less repetitive is ludicrous. Shoot, shoot, shoot, jump, push something, repeat.

It's not a matter that I prefer one genre over the other. I loved the Halo series. Even though you were on a track, you had more open landscapes and the vehicle combat was phenomenal.

I own both of the Condemned games. Both of those are story driven, first person games. I also own both of the Vegas games and Conflict: Denied Ops.

Comparing Tomb Raider (a third person ADVENTURE/PUZZLE game), to Half Life 2 (a first person ADVENTURE/PUZZLE game), isn't far off at all. That's kind of like saying that Halo 3 and Gears Of War aren't both comparable because one is a third person game, and one is first. They are still, shooters.

The way Tomb Raider is less repetitive, is the way that it breaks up the action and the puzzle solving. (And in this, I mean that it isn't running, go around a corner, see your blocked, go back, shoot 3 guys in front of a switch, then go back. At least you had some segments that were just one or the other.) Not to mention the change in locations. I mean come on, I get sick of the first 2 hours of the game, staring at nothing but the inside of the airboat, and orange backgrounds with water that you can't jump into. At least in Tomb Raider, everywhere looked different.

Yes, Half Life 2, does have some interesting parts, and some very fun ones. But when you're running on foot, up and down hills, just to back track because you couldn't use your grav. gun in the same way you used it in the previous puzzle, now that's ludicrous.

Play through it again, or read the strategy guide on IGN. The whole game has a pattern. Especially the vehicle parts. And look at the survivor parts, you have to constantly battle off combine, area, after area, after area, as they die off. Solve one puzzle, get back to your path, and three more join you, to go and do the same thing, in a slightly different way.

Tomb Raider may be repetitive like every game, but it's not as drawn out. And it's not like you come to a dead end, turn around, go into a room, shoot 3 people, flip a switch (that you should be able to hit with your grav. gun), then go back. And that's what gets annoying with Half Life 2.

Honestly, the most adrenaline pumping part of The Orange Box for me, was when you are in the Antlion tunnels in Episode 2 and have to fend off the separate tunnels. Why that held my attention, I don't know. It's nothing more than a "defend the base", like all of the other "action sequences" in the game.

And just for the record, I never said Tomb Raider was better. I was using it as a comparison. Kind of like I did with BioShock, which you seemed to say nothing about.

Was Half Life 2 a good game? Yes.
Was it repetitive? Yes.
Did the enviroments change enough? No.
Would I play through it again? Maybe.

Every game has a pattern, I've played through Half Life and Half Life 2 multiple times. To say Halo had more variety is ridiculous. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one because I think all the games you mentioned are more repetitive that HL2. Even though some tasks do seem repeat themselves, it's the means to the solution that varies and you can't call it the same situation. I admit some situations are repetitive or even too similar to HL1 but those just fill a little space here and there and allow you to kill some folk and have fun with the physics. HL2 is a first person shooter that's backed with a great story and an engine and design that are both so superior that they make you feel like you're playing an action/adventure game. Condemned (haven't play 2 so I can only speak for the first), Conflict Ops games, Far Cry, STALKER, Doom 3, the Unreal Tournament games, the Quake series, the Rainbow Six Vegas series, and even Call of Duty don't match the single player variety of HL2. Hell, the only things I can think of recently that do are more akin to an RPG like Bioshock or are predominantly multiplayer like the Battlefield series (the earlier PC games, not the dumbed down console experiences). Gears of War and Halo are different games, one is a first person shooter and one is a third person shooter. They occupy the same broad genre but are in different sub-genres.

Again, I don't recall saying that Halo had more variety. I said I loved it.

I wouldn't say HL2 is a shooter. It's not got as much action as a shooter, and 90% of the "shooter" games out there, do not have puzzles. You simply SHOOT stuff 98% of the game. It's more of an adventure/RPG that's in the first person genre.

As far as those other games not matching the variety in HL2...How is that possible? Every task in HL2 that you preform is something such as defending a certain thing for a set amount of time, or figuring out how to open a door that's blocking your path. Yes, you are constantly moving, but it's done so much, that I began to feel the "is this game ever going to be over?" feeling.

You have to get through a different challenge to open a door or hit a switch though. One time you could have to find a plug and use the grav gun to unplug it so that the water isn't electrified and the next moment you be trying to catch plasma spheres being fired and re-routing them to a power supply. You can't look at the task, you have to look at the means to the end. Doesn't matter though, you have your opinion and I have mine, it's obvious we're not going to sway each other.

Yea, i got all of them.

To get less would be ridiculous, unless you're very unsure if you'll like it or not, coz it doesn't take a helluva long time to get through a chapter.

If you're, unlike me, able to see where the hell you're supposed to go in the first chapter, I'll guess it would take a person under 5 minutes to complete the first chapter. It took ME over an hour and several tries, coz the game is so damn dark i couldn't see a whole lot, which was a shame, coz i felt i missed a whole lot of cool scary details while trying to escape the lunatic cop. You just don't have that kind of time or overview to enjoy and discover details. The gameplay doesn't allow it. :(

But the atmosphere and story are great.

I'm on chapter 3 now. Took me 2 hours to get there and that's pretty fucking slow.

I had a similar effect when I first played the original call of duty, it's like there had never been a game of this type anywhere near as intense. Felt almost shellshocked from the damn thing the first couple stages I played through, it could be so disorienting and chaotic at times, even as a shooter player predominately it actually took me aback - 15-20 minute sessions only for me.

Sometime around the Splicer woman getting fried at the funeral home, to me setting 4 of them on fire after getting the Incinerate plasmid, i forgot I had played it before and was totally immersed again.

I love Bioshock. I figure if I play a game a third time, i am getting a return on my investment purchasing it. Luckily Bioshock, the half-Life games and FEAR have made up for Deus Ex, Homeworld, Doom 3 (oddly enough) that I have purchased or been given and never finished for one reason or another.

Doom 3 will have to be completed though... It is on my list of games i Need a gallerty for on Scared yet....

Started playing BLACK, which my brother loaned me. (PS2).
Up to the third stage now.
I have to say thus far I'm pretty impressed, especially considering it came out a while ago now. Reminds me of soldier of fortune meets (slightly) call of duty.
Great visuals, enemy AI is alright, great musical score - really good.
Only three things stopped this from being just about the perfect FPS experience:
*Linear terrain
*Can't jump...
*Aim is just a tad slow, and no option to increase sensitivity.
I feel that these things stopped it from living up to full potential.
But seriously, not really any huge complaints...f they made a sequel (which I hope they do) I'd pick it up for sure.

I am still slogging my way through Bioshock; takin gmy time. i am currently bulking up on cash in Olympus Heights. I have discovered a fun little investment sub-game.

Load up with Trap Bolts and Steel-tipped bolts. it helps if you have Incinerate 3. Run up the central walkway where you find sander cohen's apartment, setting up trap bolts, 1 per wall the whole way up.

Wait until there is a big daddy (elite rosies on this level), then blast him with the incinerate, which pisses him off (btw, make sure you are on the top level for this).

He will run into the traps the whole way up, that will take him way the hell down or kill him, and if he is still alivem shoot him in the head with a steel tipped bolt or two. Big Daddies carry a lot of cash, and carry lots of spare parts to use in U-Invent,

As for me, I'm finishing up Prey for the Xbox 360 and it's an absolute BLAST.

AMAZING graphics, great UI, and a truly dark atmosphere. My only problem is that I wish it was a bit more of a challenge (it's slightly a bit too linear for me; wish it was more like Doom or Metroid with interactive maps), BUT that being said, I definitely recommend Prey. Fantastic FPS with mind-blowing graphics.

Which game system is it on?

Too Human is on the 360, I would be hestitant to recomend it though. Thogu I love it, it's got some pretty serious problems. It's pretty punishing and unofrtunately its not always easy to make the protagnist Baldur DO exactly what you want him too. If I could be mind linked to him through some nifty sci-fi contraption that'd work. The storytelling is also very rough, rigid and rushed and while there is definetly evidence of some real skill in how they have applied the Norse mythology to their retelling it's not always protrayed very effectively.

I can genuinely say it's not for everyone, I get a kick out of it but I can see how many people hate it's shiny little guts.

This sounds silly, but to practice with FPS games (uf you care enough to waste some time on it), load up a game like Counter Strike: Source (if you have it) and run around practicing jumping and shooting, shoot cans, garbage, or pick a spot on a wall and see how close you can get while moving, then practice standing still.

Even better, if you have Half-Life 2, load up the map where you have to travel on the beams of the bridge (I'll see if i can get you the map name), type in the cheat to get all the weapons, and practice shooting sea gulls with the crossbow and magnum (use the shotgun if you get frustrated :D) It sounds like a complete waste of time, but it is an awesome hand-eye coordination exercise.

Plus, it is fun watching them go limp and then fall 200 feet into the water. Hey, they arent real birds...

Just wait, when you get to the point where you have to finish somebody's "gallery". You get more of a horror vibe later on for sure. Although even in the beginning, the splicer with the gun and the baby carriage, the big daddy just demolishing a splicer in front of you as you watch hoping it won't break through the glass...

That kind've shit pisses me off, the makers fucking up an otherwise fun game by putting in something that's just un-enjoyable and/or irritating in there.

I thought it was a creepy sci-fi action adventure with horror overtones. Atmosphere is a big thing in games and a lot of developers seem to overlook it, which is why Dead Rising is an action game with zombies instead of a horror game filled with zombies and action.

It's not that bad. It definitely has its weaknesses. I'm not a huge fan of being forced occasionally to press particular buttons in a particular order to make a particular character do things (climb, etc) that aren't relevant for most of the game.

The game isn't great, but it's not bad. I think that the graphics are pretty brilliant at times and the beasties look really cool. It's fairly redundant, though. I wish it wasn't so linear.

It really raises the bar. The interface is slick and very intuitive, the story is immersive and the action (and the SUIT) are incredible. there is nothing quite like walking right up to someone cloaked, then shotgunning 2 of them in the back point blank :)

800 points, pretty cheap really. It's got co-op and uses the avatars, really just a good social game. Hang out and build a little city. By the way, my foreign trade policy as ruler of that kingdom... help the gypsies and alienate the rest. I may need to re-think that. No fighting, nothing intense, just a relaxing game that kind of reminds me of Settlers meets Sim City. Don't expect something deep or life altering, but it's a blast.

Aside from a few clunky animation issues, and a not so great control system, its age considered this is actually a very decent survival/horror/scifi type title.

I actually thought portal was the most cleverly crafted video game narrative I have seen in years. One voice, not much time almost no conflict in the traditional sense.

Hell give me those paramaters and I'd jsut scratch my head as to how one would go about telling a story, let alone a damn hilariously dark one such as Portal creates... with it out on live now I think everyone should play it, hell I bought orange box to play it and I fucking hate half life.

Farcry 2: Badass. open world was the way to go with this series.

Deadspace: also badass. a mix of Resident 4 Evil and Doom 3, yet better than both, creepy as fuck and good fun. Theres nothing more satisfiying than blowing a mosters limb off, watching it slowly crawl around on the ground, then walking up to it and stomping it to death.

I thought the gameplay was rather unique, and the atmosphere perfect. It almost felt on par with F.E.A.R., but the repetitiveness of later levels put it a slight notch below. Still an excellent game, nonetheless.

If you are a fan of unique gameplay, check out Prototype. I posted a bunch of links to the trailers in a thread.

I usually play most games on Medium first to familiarise myself with the game's atmosphere and gameplay first. Then if the game is worth it, Hard on the second go.

Medium was okay, not too bad. Like I said, gameplay felt a bit repetitive as the levels progressed. But the signature killing style was really groovy, and it had LOADS of atmosphere. Always 2 pluses in my book.

Been playing Deadspace a good amount lately, however this game is almost completly destroyed by its difficulty setting. Hard is entirely too hard, Monsters are way too tough, ammo too scarce, to the point where its not fun, and medium is way too easy. moster die too quickly, and theres more ammo laying around than I can even carry, not rewarding or satisfying. pisses me off that the developers would make a stupid mistake like that that ruins a game.

does anyone know if the monsters get tougher and medium gets harder by any chance? because they go down with like 2 shots, its rediculous.

at first I was dissapointed. It feels and plays in every way shape and form like Oblivion, which was what I was looking for, but for some reason wasnt too happy about. I thought the V.A.T.S. combat system made it too easy and was a boring idea.

boy did i change my mind.

As soon as i got out of the vault and started exercising my limitless freedoms i loved it. No more mr. nice guy in this one. In oblivion i was nice to almost everyone and was some sort of town hero. In Fallout 3 I had the choice to disarm a bomb sitting in a town full of people or blow it up and kill them all. Blew it up, then murdered the poeple who hired me to do it and stole their expensive shit. no annoying cops chasing after me like in oblivion either. My guy looks like someone out of Doomsday, mohwak and hockey mask and torn clothing and all sorts of shit. this game is tons of fun. fucking blast. The VATS system has grown on me to, exploding heads in slow motion is fucking awesome.

Azazel005

I love VATS, it is a considerable boon to someone with less then stellar precise aiming skills. I think it would be interesting to ignore it and apply all your perks on things that aren't relevant too VATS, nut I couldn't hit a rhino that was missing three legs and was ambly very very slowly away from me... so yeah I like VATS.

It's funny though, I started my second and most beloved character with the same mindset as you Mothman. Though as he garnered power and wealth... stealing and taking become redundant... and through no fault of my own the guy grew a conscience and wanted to help people... it was SUPREMELY satisfying.

Shoot up some regulators for me Moth.

Funny.

I find the (Horror) atmosphere lacking in Bioshock. Love the music score, but it doesn't at any time feel like a horror game. It's more like a fantasy shoot-em-up.

Love the tense atmosphere in Dead Space.

I was kidding, saying TDK isn't the best movie in the past decade is considered bashing it now. Didn't you get the memo? As for the atmosphere, I'd say it was a dark sci-fi adventure with plenty of horror undertones but most of all I'd say it was fantastic. wanna try multiplayer sometime?
there's no servers, but I could start one.

Sure. I still have to get another subscription to Gold. And I need a better way to hook up my system.

How's Dead Space? I'm hoping for a story-lite game with plenty of jumps and lots of action.

In one word - wonderful.

You ll love the atmosphere and the finishing moves. Levels can be a bit repetitive, but that can be overlooked.

Its gorgeous, scary as hell and a blast.

I thought about that, but I'm curious if it would reach my system. My computer is in a room attached to the garage, while I am upstairs on the opposite end. I didn't want to spend the $100, and find out it doesn't work. Gamestop won't take it back. :(

Edit

I didn't ever notice it til you posted that picture, but the background on the HDC forum boxes, is an almost green color.

Where the hell have you been. GTA V is great........you sleep with one of the whores in the game and you actually wake up the next morning....in real life....with an STD.

ahhhhhh.....good times

Still working away at this one...it's not awful, but it isn't very good either. The controls are really sluggish - I'm stuck on the first boss type thing because the control make it damn near impossible to avoid his fire.

Still - seems like an OK shooter. I wont quite give up on it yet.
