Halo.
One craze I initially missed.
I had tried to play it before but never really got into it, and just recently d/l'd it to give it a good go. Aside from the car thing being a bitch to control on pc (only the mouse turns it, and I can't seem to change this in the settings...) it's not a bad game.
I suppose it plays out in a decent sci-fi movie kinda way...I can see them perhaps putting this one on film eventually.
I thought this at first, and I still do - those little retard aliens that run around sounding like Gir from Invader zim are annoying, and stupid - completely wrong to the feel of the game and I feel they take something away from the experience.
The musical scoring is nice, and the locations and architecture of the structures is interesting and original.
The storyline is pretty good, I like how you were thrown into the reality of the game, nicely handled.
I heard some people had an issue with the "two weapons only at a time" thing, I personally don't, but I have to say I don't particularly like the range of weapons.
Nice bit of physics work for the effect the grenades have.
I'm not sure what it is, but how your character moves around feels a little...wrong somehow.
Having given this game a proper go after all this time, I have to say that it is a well made fps game. I cannot say I would give it the same legendary status that many others seem to have, but it's a good effort, and it's retained enough interest to continue playing...it's among the "good".
I guess if you've read this far into the "review" I'll give a couple of reccomendations.
*Star Trek: Elite Force 2
I played both, but cannot remember the first one all that well...however, this one gave a good impression. Excellent game. Perfect storyline, and some hardcore firefights. All the technology of the series without getting too geeky., the tricorder/scanner plays a big role, but it's fun to use. Great sets and REALLY good AI...Not to mention Tony Todd as one of the main in-game characters. Very good. This game will make you jump, some of the scenes literally play out like a good horror/thriller should. Knowledge of the trek series doesn't matter, the storyline is very well conceived and easy to follow, the characters unestablished.
The length of this game (for once) was perfect. VERY solid title.
Check it out, and I garauntee you'll be as surprised as I was.
*Unreal 2.
I never played the original, so I don't know how this one stacks up by comparison, but this here game is excellent in so many ways. The alien worlds are absolutely beautiful to look at, the missions vary from simple to complex, never overwhelming, never unrewarding. The storyline is one of the best I've yet to see in a scifi game, the storyline introduces some pretty cool characters (and one sexy holographic bitch...or was she a robot?), the dialogue is interesting and funny. This game can go from easygoing to completely intense within seconds, the combat in this game is also varied, dependant upon what you're fighting, a pretty nice mix-up....oh and the main badguys, the "skurgg" are just...evil.., scary, angry, and not easy to take down...they make the halo baddies look like bitched.
Visually stunning game, even by todays standards.
Well worth whatever the asking cost is these days or D/L...
The reason I mention these two games in short review is that even though HALO might've been newer and prettier at the time, I think both of these games did what Halo was going for, but they did it earlier, and (SORRY HALO FANS) better.
If you're a fan of Halo, I'd definately reccomend checking them both out, for a similar but alltogether different couple of games.

You said that you dl'd Halo so you played the PC version no? The PC version never got the acclaim of the console version because it wasn't as big of a deal. Halo 2 is still the finest multiplayer FPS to grace a console and while Halo 1 was probably the best FPS single player experience on a console when it was released it really didn't stand the test of time like Halo 2 has. I went to play Ghost Recon with a friend the other day and that's when I realised what a difference Halo 2s matchmaking and party options made, still a great game.

Well, THAT I might agree on...but yeah, with the range on pc (king of fps, no contest), this one just doesn't stand out greatly.
It's good though, I'm enjoying elements of it.

Well, compared to the first Fatal Frame it seems to me like the creators lacks of imagination and new ideas. The same was the case with "Fatal Frame 2 - Crimson Butterfly".
What i liked most about the 3rd game was actually the appartment scenes. They could and should have done a lot more out of that part of the game imho.

well, Fatal frame 1 and 2 has a very similar story but I like how the closed the saga on the third part. The real problem would be if Campco decides to make another game for the new PS 'cause the story finished on Ps2 saga .
And talking about the apartment, yes the scenes there are scarier than in the dream manssion. The game producer had said that they put that scenes cause they took the idea from Silent HIll 4 (maybe 'cause the Silent team took some elements from Fatal Frame for Silent Hill 4)

Deus Ex 2 was ok. The thing that I hated the most about it was the horrid and choppy frame rate. It lagged so much that it wasn't even funny.
If you have played Thief, you know what I'm talking about. The graphics are so good, they're bad. :(
Also, I was never able to play Fatal Frame 1 or 2 very much because they scared the shit out of me when I was younger. Maybe they wouldn't now that I'm older? I should also check into the 3rd.
Silent Hill 3 was decent, never got that far on the rental because I was working a lot then.
I need to get back into video games....And go for the horror oriented only.

Deus Ex 2 is beautiful on my pc and doesn't jump around or skip... addicting game too with a lot of the elements I loved from the first one back for #2. Finished HL2 Episode 1 yesterday and I can't wait for Episode 2, what a game. I love the way HL2 makes you panic, whether it's your elevator falling and trapping you underwater making you find a quick escape or a black headcrab that poisons you and drops you to 1HP, HL2 really keeps the energy up through the whole game.

Last fifa game I bought was the last World Cup edition.
This is a great game. There has been a vast improvement in graphics, physics, AI, and control over the years, making the purchase of this update worthwile. However, I don't think it would be worth getting the new version each year unless you are a serious football fan.

RE: Deus EX 2...
For some reason, even though every aspect of my pc specs FAR exceeded the requirements on this one, and the FMV ran brilliantly, INGAME, the thing was just fucked...If I were to turn 180, I'd see the frames skip about 8 times, and it would slow up performance. This is, even with my specs being far superior than needed, and the settings turned down to minimum (640x480), this still happened. So...for a fps game, this isn't on, took it back....unfortunate.
Can anyone take a stab at why this happened?
Either way, I exchanged it for "American McGees Scrapland", which I know absolutely nothing about...looks interesting...

Yeah, I've played it...quite difficult in parts, but it's playable...
Works kinda like a sequel to the 80's film, but goes deeper into the plot...deals with (mainly) the "other" site. (Might wanna rewatch the Thing to get amped for this one). Govt. conspiracy stuff, not knowing who to trust (there's NPCs throughout the game which can randomly turn out to be "the thing", not to mention getting infected)....I really like the mpc interaction with this one, you'll see what I mean.
There's more than one creature, which is cool...the music and atmosphere are really good, it WILL make you jump, and it WILL make you frantic.
Nice splatter, a little gore, and a pretty damn solid storyline for a game.
Possibly one of the best movie/game adaptations I've ever seen.
The girl started playing "SCRAPLAND", so I've let her, and I'll play it later...mainly because she next to never comes across a game she'll actually play, so, let her have it...I just find I can't play the same game at the same time, sooo...off to EB next week to see what they've got for $25 or less.
So, VOD, have you checked out Scrapland? I know you were a big Alice fan...not that it's anything like Alice, but the attention AMcG has put (again) in to creating another unique universe, and characters is pretty cool....ah, also, you can bodyhop into cops too...haha, fun stuff, brilliant looking game...if you havent looked at it yet, man, I think you should.

Hit N' Run is indeed like GTA but Road Rage is more akin to Crazy Taxi (you ever play that?). You pick up people and deliver them to their destination as quickly as possible. Both are fun but Hit N' Run is the better game.

Been playing through Far Cry again on pc.
Pretty good game, I like that it punishes you for running around shooting everything like an idiot...I've been sniping a lot this time around, with either the rifle or the silenced SMG thing works pretty well too, trying to find as many paths as possible to eliminate resistance from a safe point...well, mainly...it's not as though I'm not having run-ins, especially with the tri-gens, but the varied styles of combat in this game is great...
I like this one, good, creeped out atmosphere, great sound, not just one type of enemy, not just one way to play...I heard people complained that it was "too hard", I have to admit, it IS pretty damn hard, but when you stick with it and get past the learning curve, realise that this is not just your everyday FPS and play accordingly, it's not that bad, and a hell of an experience. I remember being let down by the final stage, but other than that, from beggining to end, it's a treat, and I'm eagerly awaiting FC2.
I may install "fable"...anyone played that? Any good?

Far Cry is still one of my favourite games. It has a depth of atmosphere that is rarely found in games (HL2 has it too). The outdoor scenes still look beautiful - bright and colourful when most FPS games tend to be dull and bleak in their colour schemes. It really "feels" like a tropical island.

One of my all-time favourite games; my only problem with it is the same as Vamp's beef with Fable: Too damn short. Just when you're really getting into it, it's over...pissed me off so much I havent even bothered to try the sequel yet.

I've been playing through fable.
Just wondering, did you guys both play the xbox version? 7 Hours seems like...it's totally not that short. Although, I am playing the pc version "fable - the lost chapters" which I understand is somewhat extended?
I'd reccomend checking this out if you're after more content/missions/areas, of course, I haven't played the xbox version so I wouldn't know, but thus far it seems long enough, I've been playing it solid for a couple days now.
I'm being the absolute "angel" (even got a halo) this time, all "attractive" and "nice", only the "clean" weapons and powers...it's so hard not to just deliberately make the bad decisions and be an asshole...I'll be doing that next time, evil, scary ugly bastard...do people "boo" you when you're the bad guy? I'm getting kind of sick of the applause shit. I look foward to seeing the different missions and how the storyline differs too.
I like the boss fights...the game as a whole is a lot more in depth than I thought it would be.
On another matter, I remember there was a game released for ps2 shortly after it came out, called "summoner", it always looked pretty good to me...has anyone here played it enough to comment?

Haha, just finished it up today. 100% on everything. It's very, very short. Again, I beat it in 7 hours. Including all of the side missions and collecting everything. Very good game though. Got mine for XBOX at Blockbuster for $6.99...Was going to rent it, but that was $7.99.
Sucky thing about it, you beat it and it gives you a really powerful gun and horse AND $300, you can't use them for anything though because there is nothing left to do.
@Phalanx
I had the XBOX version. I beat everything in it the first time through in 7 hours, no joke. I really want to get the Lost Chapters version though.
I don't remember if they "Boo" or not...I think they did. It's kinda cool when you do it bad through the game.
Also, never played Summoner, but I do have the sequel. Decent game, not nearly as good as Fable though.

Still playing Fable...I like this game...it's very innovative, and brings something new to the "action/rpg" table. The trading system is great, the quests and subquests are cool too. It reminds me a lot of a zelda game...it's DEFINATELY long enough though, for all those dissapointed with the xbox version, check out the pc version. (Hopefully one day, they'll just release the SAME versions pc/console-wide....damn unfair that some people pay to get what's essentially an inferior game just for prefering console or pc, although usually pc leads the way)...
Looking foward to #2, as soon as I have a pc that can play it:(

Actually, I was thinking about that, the "too quick" thing...I noticed something a while ago when I was replaying max payne 1, one of my favourite games...it seemed a lot longer than I remembered, I thought back and could recall thinking upon the first completion "shit, that ended way too quick", I think that when a games is great, and you REALLY get into it, you don't notice the time, and between that and wanting more, it tends to make the games we really like come across as "short". I remember thinking the same thing about "dungeon siege", a game that was by no means too short...could be just a perspective thing in some cases.

The Elder Scrolls games are great. The early ones like Arena and Daggerfall are DOS games, so the graphics are kinda bad and you need a computer that will support them. Morrowind is the 3rd and has two expansion packs (Tribunal, Bloodmoon) and is one of the best in the series. Oblivion is basically Morrowind with better graphics, voice work, schedules for all NPC's and a new story. To understand what's going on, you don't need the other games in the series. I mean heck, I'm still looking for a copy of the first one.

Check onlin eto see if there are any known issues with the game freezing before you return it, because most likely getting a fresh copy of the game will not change anything.
Make sure your drivers are up to date, and make sure that the game has the most recent patches before you try playing. Last and certainly not least, make sure you dont have the settings cranked too high. Lock-up is one of the number 1 problems when a game is trying to run beyond the capabilities of your computer. The memory fills up, then it grinds to a halt, like a fused engine block.
Just some suggestions from your friendly neighborhood Vodstok.

Not that I'm playing it, but I just got through a demo of doom3.
I've never played as much as I did...my personal pc don't run it quite right...but all the same, when I played through this I can't help but think that people would've been split down the middle about this one.
It's become a little more complex than the old dooms, but in doing so, seems to have shed any kind of semblance to the look, feel, and gameplay of old. I'm not complaining myself, but to me it didn't really feel like a "doom" game at all, just another scare/gorefest to live up to a lot of other current titles.
I have to admit, I was at the point where I was just saying to this game "for fucks sake, stop messing with me, bitch!" every corner that something can hide in, it does...
Seems a decent game, but I think quake 4 is higher on my "must play" list. I suppose when I get my new pc I'll be able to play just about anything, that'll be sweet for a while at least.
Also, did anyone play tomb raider - angel of darkness? What's it like?

Hows the scarface game?I was gonna pick it up yesterday but got rocky instead.
It's pretty good. There's alot of different things you can do and it appears to be kinda long. Entertaining way to take up some free time imo. There's extreme violence, language and drug related situations, so if that's a turn off for ya I suggest you don't give this one a second thought.

Ah, ^there's^ one I've gotta wait for the upgrades...it'll run on my current machine, but not well enough IMO. When it comes to games, especially FPS , I'm fairly particular about everything running perfectly smoothly...otherwise it just takes so much out of it for me.
I'm going home tommorow, found a copy of 'tomb raider - angel of darkness' lying around here so I thought I'd "borrow" it and check that out. Not a huge fan of the series, but haven't played anything new to me in a while.
Currently playing "n", which I think I'm damn near the supreme master of...on the last world now, and it's a motherfucker. I might not have finished it yet, but I challenge ANYONE to get as far as I have. Once again, that's "n", a cool ninja flash game. Try it.

Murder, do you play RS: Vegas on Live?
I did for 48 hours :p My 360 froze just about every time I tried to play RSV online though....
My friend told me it's because I had the trial version of live, but I don't know why they'd purposely make a trial version worse... you'd think it would be the opposite. I need the wireless adaptor before I get live though.... 150$ at bestbuy for a stupid little thing like that. The premium system should come with it, what's all these wires? My headset is wired which is lame, what's the point of having a wireless controller if you have to be wired to your controller?
Anyway... I'll be getting live eventually, it's pretty much why I bought the system. Right now, between my boyfriend and I we have 8 games already (Never had a system with this much choice haha). I don't really play that much so the need for online kind of died with the combo of good games to play offline andpoor trial (and 150$ wireless adapter...). It only happened with rainbow six, it happened constantly though like every game I tried to play. Also rainbow six would be the only game I would play online.
I think the game I play the most right now is Hexic. :o
I'm going to play condemned when I get home from work tonight, the game's even scarier when you can hear actual junkies throwing up and yelling outside in real life while you're playing.

Played some painkeep arena last night, that one never gets old for me.
Also played FEAR with the lights off. Had to stop after a while. Its so godamn nerve-wracking...
Funny story: Last night, in fear, i had killed one soldier, and hispartner had retreated. So i snuck to the edge of the stairwell he was behind, then popped around. He was a little bit back, so i pumped 3 rounds from the shotgun at him. It kicks up a ton of dust,so i didnt know if i had quite hit him. I chucked a grenade up where i thought he might be hiding. When it exploded, i saw his body move, i HAD killed him with the shotgun. I found out how a second later when his head rolled down the stairs. :) I had blown his head off (literally) and the grenade rolled it like a bowling ball :)

god i hate that game.
i dont care for games (but i'll still playe them with my kid) that rely on luck - the throw of dice. With Risk there is about 5% strategy involved but everyone learns that within 5 min of playing the game .. after that it's all dice.
there arent many games where you rely solely - or mostly on your brain ..
chess, trivial pursuit ...one or 2 more ?
with risk ... i spend most of my time in amazement at my supernaturally bad luck with the dice.
same here. Its why i hated board games when i was a kid. 50% of the game was me getting shitty roles (or bad cards in sorry), the other 45% was my sister cheating her ass off.
She got the Starwars edition of trivial pursuit one year, though, and after that her ass was mine. i dont think i ever got a questions wrong.
Vodstok

i buy trivial pursuit editions if i see them cheap/used.

no one will play Silver Screen against me.
Ha! I cant get anyone to play trivial pursuit against me, period. I would imagine it would be the same for most of the people who are regulars here, a lot of us are pop culture databases.
It drives my wife crazy that i can remember that Ned Flanders was black in the first episode of the simpsons, but i cant remember to caall the red cross to see if they will take clothes donations.

Which would beg the question, Would the winner really win, or would they be the the biggest loser in the group?
Of course, all of us being married and having kids kind of takes us off the loser list. At least we've all been with women. more than i can say for a lot of my nerd friends from high school.

It's nothing spectacular, but it's good for a laugh...and gets pretty damn addictive. Good music, good humour, and (eventually) some pretty challenging missions. Kind've like classic warcraft meets general chaos...
Flashback was amazing, and Out of This World
Damn straight...played through both, but I found flashback stayed with me a lot more...Delphine did great things with those two.
For those that haven't played them, picture the old style prince of persia games with better storyline, and sci-fi setting. Only play "out of this world/another world" if you want to be amazingly frustrated, it tends to rely a little more on luck and being frantic. Flashback is a little better paced IMO, and much easier to pick up.
Anyways, romnation.net has all the roms and emulators you'll ever need for those interested in having a look at these great games.
Just put on the master system emulator...played something I had a faint recollection of called "psychic world", pretty terrible game...interesting though.
