Leniency... let him have another question (he's had far too much time to construct and answer to the first one), a tough one too... with a semi-short time limit. Hmm....
Even after taking all facts into account, plus the main fact that Psycom DID have all day, all evening and all night (till 1 AM) to submit his reply (if he even bothered till then), I am NOT satisfied.
The esteemed Judge was lenient and forgiving, and withdrew his punishment (which was a really harsh and brutal punishment), but I will not be as kind or forgiving, simply for the time factor. IF Psycom is indeed telling the truth, he had about 16 hours to send in his answer, if he bothered, before the so-called "incident" happened. As it stands right now, he did not.
The problem is, I am the unbiased host here, and there are Judges present who have taken the "facts(?)" into account, and have been quite forgiving. Although Battle Royale must continue, I will NOT let off Psycom so easily.
I will take Despare's suggestion for the proceedings, and make ONE exception.
Psycom, you have 12 hours to submit your answer to this fresh query :-
"John Carradine: underappreciated horror great or rightfully neglected schlockmeister?
If he was a horror great, what was his greatest horror role, and why?
If he was a shlockmeister, what was his hammiest piece of horror cheese, and why?"
Failure to submit an entry within the next 12 hours will result in a very heavy punishment, regardless of any "facts", "truths", "incidents" and any other "thingummys".
We will see the results of Round of FOUR for the other Finalists...
...NEXT.

RESULTS - ROUND OF FOUR
The first entry, came from Finalist Zero.
"If you had to remove one horror film branded a classic from existence which one would be it be? What would the consequences be for contemporary horror films accordingly?"
"Well, a question like this is bound to provoke controversy. If we understand ‘classic’ to mean a film that has become part of the canon of great horror films, then removing one is bound to violate someone’s (perhaps many someones’) sensibilities. But, to the question I now turn and the film I have chosen to remove from the list of ‘classics’ is Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 The Shining.
I will be the first to say that The Shining is a brilliant film, it is smart and insightful and it absolutely oozes with Kubrick’s aesthetics and politics. But, I don’t think it has been productive for the broader scope of horror. Essentially, my argument is that the more people have heaped praise upon Kubrick’s The Shining, the less respect horror films have gotten. In the following paragraphs I will elaborate upon this thesis.
First, The Shining is first and foremost a Kubrick film. Even when horror fans talk about it, the film is always first and foremost understood as Kubrick! This is right and accurate since almost every Kubrick film is basically a Kubrick film (which is to say that his vision overrides any genre issue or even star-turn – if Nicholson chews the scenery it is because Kubrick wants him to). Now, Kubrick is a great director, but he is no horror director. This is not to say that The Shining is not scary in parts or that it is not a horror film but, rather, the problem is that Kubrick so overshadows the horror that it actually diminishes the genre. For many people they love The Shining BECAUSE it is a Kubrick film and – importantly here – IN SPITE OF the fact that it is horror.
For many critics and film historians, The Shining is an example of Kubrick ‘slumming’ in the backwater genre of horror. The momentary presence of the ‘great director’ within horror simply demonstrates his greatness – ‘oh look,’ they say, ‘Kubrick can make even horror artistic.’ Let’s be honest – this snobbery is rife in the film fan world. If you are at a cocktail party and someone says they love Kubrick or Jim Jarmusch or Felini or whatever – then the response is ‘oohhh’ – but in proper circles if you say you love Romero or Craven or Argento then the answer will either be ‘who?’ or ‘yuck.’ Kubrick’s momentary stop in the horror genre actually diminishes these other directors because they don’t live up to the aesthetics of ‘the great director’ – thus perpetuating the diminishment of horror.
Second, The Shining actually adds nothing to the genre. It was a commercial and generally critical success – a necessary success after Kubrick’s dismal failure with Barry Lyndon – but what new twist does it add? Haunted houses – done many times before! Dysfunctional family – done before! Creepy kids – done before! In The Shining, Kubrick basically takes the skeleton of horror films – inverts it – and then makes the film his way. Even Stephen King hated Kubrick’s version because he took all the meat off the story and reduced it to basic generic elements that he could manipulate in his own vision.
Third, watched carefully, The Shining is actually an anti-horror film. It basically takes the normal elements of horror and inverts them, as I mentioned above. Consider the scene where Jack is hammering at the bathroom door with his ax. Now, any normal horror director would put the camera inside the bathroom with Shelly Duvall so that we would be trapped with her as the ax begins to penetrate the door. But not Kubrick. Instead he puts the camera outside with Jack – even down the hall a bit – so we watch as he workmanlike batters at the door. We only go inside once the job has been essentially finished. This trick is played out over and over again. This is not to say its not a good film or not scary or not effective as an exercise in inverting genre – but it is often used by non-horror fans to claim that horror can be boiled down to these elements and then deconstructed by the ‘great director.’
Let me close by saying I like The Shining and that I really like and admire Stanley Kubrick. That said, I think removing The Shining from existence would not so much diminish horror as, potentially, open the door for more serious consideration of horror films – many of which were equally smart and equally innovative – made by those who devoted their careers to the genre and didn’t just pass through."
And the esteemed presiding Judge's verdict to that answer was...
"While I may not agree with every single point made by this contender, his argument is very well reasoned with specific details and points to back up his opinion. I would hate to see The Shining wiped out, but you make a strong case.
Score: 8/10.
REWARD: 5 health packs and a Grenade Launcher with 1 Grenade, PLUS a Rocket Launcher with 1 Rocket!!"
WAY TO GO, FINALIST ZERO! Superb effort, and an equally great reward!!

The second entry, came from Finalist Posher778.
"If you had to remove one horror film branded a classic from existence which one would be it be? What would the consequences be for contemporary horror films accordingly?"
"I would remove the classic film "The Mummy". Although it is a classic, it wasn't quite as influential as say, Dracula or Frankenstein, and not nearly as important. Although there were many sequels and clones of the film, including the popular remake and sequel "The Mummy Returns," I don't think the world of film would evaporate due to their removal from existence. The original Mummy is indeed a good film, and it is influential to some modern horror films, but not enough in my opinion. It hardly influences the "living dead" elements, as we do have real zombie films for that such as "Night of the Living Dead" or "Dawn of the Dead". All things considered, the world could live without 'The Mummy.'"
And the esteemed presiding Judge's verdict to that answer was...
"7 points.
No reward or punishment."
Congrats, Posher! You win 7 points (1 HP), but dont win any arsenal or bonus HPs for this effort. Good try though.

The third entry, came from Finalist Despare.
"If you had to remove one horror film branded a classic from existence which one would be it be? What would the consequences be for contemporary horror films accordingly?"
"This is a tough question to answer for me because I love classic horror films. I suppose I would have to say, for the sake of the genre… 'Them!' While I’m a big fan of this movie and really think it’s a terrific giant creature flick it didn’t really revolutionize the genre. We already had 'King Kong', and even 'Godzilla' was released before 'Them!' so it didn't create the giant killer creature genre nor was it the first to address our fear of nuclear side effects. I guess what it all comes down to is impact and 'Them!' simply didn’t do enough for the genre that wasn’t done before. The 50’s were littered with mutant creature films and I consider 'Them!' to easily be one of the best but I think our genre would be ok without it."
And the esteemed presiding Judge's verdict to that answer was...
"I give him an 8. It seemed like he really thought about his response and took the time to do some research. Reward him, please."
CONGRATS DESPARE! YOU WIN 2 HPs (1 thrown in as Bonus) and a Shotgun with 8 shells!
Way to go with that excellent effort.

Final Update - Round of FOUR
And so...the final entry, came from Finalist Psycom5K.
"John Carradine: underappreciated horror great or rightfully neglected schlockmeister?
If he was a horror great, what was his greatest horror role, and why?
If he was a shlockmeister, what was his hammiest piece of horror cheese, and why?"
"Schlockmeister, why you say? Well it is defined as "One who produces or deals in inferior or shoddy goods or material." Carradine was known as the B Movie King. and we all know that B movies aren't the best. Now, as for his hammiest film, I myself having only seen him act in The White Buffalo, which is a western, I can't really tell you which work was his hammiest, but after looking at his list of works, a few films sure sound like his hammiest. Like Satan's Mistress, or Frankenstein Island, but I'd have to say, by title alone.... Vampire Hookers. That name just resonates cheese to me."
And the esteemed presiding Judge's verdict to that answer was...
"Some effort, not a whole lot of analysis, ignores a lot of other data on Carradine and has few specifics. I give him a 5. I'm confiscating his second heaviest weapon and rewarding an extra hp to each of his opponents."
Well...since Finalist Psycom5K does not have any weapons with him anyway, he stands to lose nothing in terms of arsenal.
However, EACH of the other THREE Finalists win 1 extra BONUS HP as decided by The Judge in his verdict!
This completes Round of FOUR. Let's now proceed into...

HDC BATTLE ROYALE - HUNTING SEASON FOR ROUND OF FOUR
All FOUR Finalists are hereby sent into The Zone for The ROUND OF FOUR outing.
Finalists, be minded that The Predator lurks somewhere inside The Zone, which is divided into four sectors - Alpha, Beta, Gamma & Omega.
Each of you have to send me your choice of sector in which you think The Predator lurks. FAILURE TO CHOOSE A SECTOR MEANS YOU WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY TARGETED BY THE PREDATOR FOR A BLAST OF HIS PLASMA BEAM!
I can only say Good Luck to Posher and Psycom, because the hunting will be done by the two Finalists WITH arsenals at their disposal - Zero & Despare, who will be sending me a PM about their choice of targets.
The deadline for hunting ends tonight at Midnight EST. IF ONE / BOTH OF YOU FAIL TO FIRE YOUR WEAPONS TILL THEN, YOU STAND TO BE SHOT TWENTY TIMES BY THE SNIPERS IN THE WATCHTOWERS!!
All the best!

The explosion took Psycom5K by surprise and he fell backwards, a couple of giant gaping wounds opening up on his chest which started to bleed heavily. Clumsily, Psycom5K got his HPs out to patch himself while he ducked behind the tree for adequate cover.
Zero took his Rocket Launcher out. He hopped down a couple branches to have a better and close look at his target who was busy applying HPs to himself, and waited. When Psycom5K was done, Zero fired his rocket straight at Psycom5K's head!
BLAM!
Psycom5K heard the firing and swerved, but he could not avoid the rocket blasting straight near his back. He was thrown forward with a mighty force, his freshly patched wounds opening up like pouring red buckets. He fell down on the ground and with a superhuman effort, took out some HPs to heal himself yet again.
By the time he felt fit, he was left with 2 HPs.
Zero threw down his empty Launchers and smiled smugly, before swinging back to the top of the tree and vanishing from sight.
- Finalist Despare waited silently till the sounds of both explosions went silent. He knew Zero had done his job, and now it was his turn. He walked forward, very quietly, towards the direction of the sounds and spotted Psycom5K in the distance - bleeding profusely, sore as hell, tears running down both cheeks as he was just finishing patching himself up.
Despare lifted his shotgun, and aimed carefully. Psycom had his back towards him, and that made a nice target.
BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!
All five shotgun shells tore through Psycom's back and ripped it to shreds, fresh wounds opening up all over it which made him look like a huge crimson tree. Psycom slumped to the ground, fighting back the severe pain and applying the last 2 HPs to himself. Sadly, they weren't enough. He lay with his back to the ground, severely wounded.
Despare walked forward, and came across the spasmodically-breathing Psycom5K, who was gasping and groaning for air. Despare stood tall, right above Psycom, and put the barrel right at his head. Psycom5K's brains went on a high red-alert, and those were the last throes he ever felt...before the searing pain brought the welcoming darkness with it...
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Despare had squeezed the trigger three times...and Psycom's head burst open like firecrackers on the fourth of July.
Up above in the high branches of the tree, Zero clapped his hands in glee and roared at the setting sun.
FINALIST PSYCOM5K IS DEAD!!!!!
The Predator looked on, far away from the action...before going back to it's hideout. It was waiting in the Gamma sector, which nobody picked.
I will let the remaining THREE Finalists rest through the night. The Judges will be confronting you yet again tomorrow morning.

HDC BATTLE ROYALE ROUND OF THREE - THE VERDICTS
The first reply, came from Finalist Posher778.
"If you could choose to live completely without fear, would you? And do you think this would be without consequences?"
"I would choose to live without fear, because fear is basically an irrational thought. Concern is different. There's typically a reason behind being concerned, but fear is simply unnecessary. I don't believe there would be any real consequences to lack of fear, other than possible negligence of potential dangers. However, if thought of correctly, a person without fear could just think up a logical solution to a problem without having their fear of it jade them."
This is what esteemed Judge NeverEnding had to say in his verdict...
"Fear is neither a thought nor irrational. Fear is an emotion and emotion happens without thought.
To quote the gale Encyclopedia of Psychology:
'Fear is an emotional response to tangible and realistic dangers.'
If someone's pointing a gun at you and you're not afraid on some level you're in trouble, because fear is a survival mechanism.
I give the respondant a failing grade not just because I disagree with him but also because he misunderstands some basic concepts.
A grade of 2/10. Forfeit 5 health packs."
Sorry Posher778, but you failed this Challenge. You stand to lose 5 HPs, as the Judge ordered, which will be returned to the HDC Medical Supplies Chamber.
Accordingly, you are left with 09 HPs.

06-04-2008, 05:37 AM
The second reply, came from Finalist Zero.
"We all know I'm a Christian AND a lover of horror films. I've gotten a lot of grief from fellow Christians for my love of horror, i.e., I'm tempting the devil and whatnot. Give me your opinion of why they think this way and I don't."
"Boy - I feel your pain on this one. As a person who still considers himself a christian and has been in and around churches my whole life, I have also heard the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the 'true believers' - in college someone left a note on my dorm room door saying they would 'pray for my soul' because I had a Dawn of the Dead poster! uggh!
My theory on this is that some christians suffer from what I call "Extreme (Selective) Literalism". Many of our more evangelical bretheren hav embraced the 'literal' doctrine as a way of saying that everything written in the Bible actually happened. Now, I am personally not such a literalist - I'm not sure that the universe was created in 7 days (or for that matter what a 'day' was before the creation of time, etc.). But, if someone wants to believe that the world was LITERALLY destroyed by a flood and that Noah saved animals, etc. then that's cool with me.
Extreme Literalism is an affliction that makes some christians believe that any story can be/is literally true. So, by watching a movie about the devil you are LITERALLY invoking the devil. They seem to have lost the ability to discern stories from accounts (where stories are made-up and accounts are reports of actual events). This strikes me as odd since the Bible is full of stories-as-stories (Jesus seemed to spend a lot of time telling stories in which the point had almost nothing to do with the 'literal' elements of the story).
People like you and me recognize that there are stories that entertain and that horror films are such stories. Indeed, for 99.9% of horror films (and most of the ones that I like) the moral of the story is actually uplifting (purity survives, people bond, love conquers, etc). But if you believe that every story is literal then even mentioning the bogeyman is invoking the REAL satan and we're all doomed (which, in fairness, is probably true anyway).
Now, as a political sidenote, I added the parenthetical word "Selective" because most conservative fundamentalist evangelicals are remarkably selective for 'literalists' who claim EVERY WORD OF THE BIBLE IS TRUE! For instance, in a town near mine there was a preacher who put up a cross in the front of the church with the phrase "HOMOSEXUALITY IS A SIN" and a series of vague biblical references as evidence. Some of my friends suggested during a drunken night that we go tear it down. But I said, 'no, we should add signs like 'anyone eatching shrimp should be stoned - also in the bible - or any man cutting the hair at his temples should be killed - also in the Bible." So it always strikes me as odd that EXTREME LITERALIST always end up selecting only the LITERAL parts that suit them and forget things like "give up all your posessions and help the poor" which was OBVIOUSLY meant only in jest by Jesus."
This is what esteemed Judge Hammerfan had to say in her verdict...
"Excellent answer. Very well thought out. I give him an 8. Please reward him, V.
P.S. Um, Zero? According to the Bible, the earth was created in 6 days, and the Lord took the 7th day to rest."
Congrats, Zero!! You win a AK-47 Assault Rifle, complete with a 10-cartridge box!! (to go alongwith TWO bonus HPs you win for the 08 points)

The third and final reply, came from Finalist Despare.
"Should we be up front with children who ask about monsters about the kinds of evil that are out in the world? In what ways does believing in monsters help children understand the world?"
"Of course we should be up front with children, the only way to help them avoid evil in this world is to try and help them understand it. Now I’m not saying we need to graphically describe every horrible thing that can happen to a kid but they should know that not everybody is good and that there is always going to be danger around. I like monsters because they’re easy to explain for the most part, much easier than humans. Monsters are often, with a few exceptions, created to personify an evil and to truly be something terrifying and/or deadly. People have much more gray area and all the evils of this world are difficult to explain because they can be much more terrifying than anything on the silver screen. I don’t think a child believing that a monster exists helps them per se, but I think that knowing that the atrocities committed by monsters can be real is helpful. You can tell a little boy not to go outside at night because Dracula will get him and probably keep the little guy from leaving the house later than you would like but that wouldn’t help him in the least. On the other hand, if you sit your boy down and explain to him that there really are people out there who will try and tempt him to go with them he can be more aware. Knowing what could potentially happen is powerful and if you don’t talk to your kids about the “bad people” in this world and what they need to look out for you’re leaving them unarmed. Not telling your kid that a teacher or priest shouldn’t touch them in a certain way is leaving them vulnerable and even with our creatures out there to be the faces of evil that’s a tough thing to convey to a kid. It all boils down to what you show the child and how you explain it, for instance, I personally wouldn’t sit my six year old girl down and show her I Spit On Your Grave to teach her about human monsters and rape. I would however show her Frankenstein and talk to her about prejudice, violence, mob mentality, and death among other things and I honestly think having such a concrete visual teaching aid would be very helpful. I hope I’ve answered your question and while I know that a lot of this is just my opinion I feel very strongly that children should be educated and talked to, not patronized and shielded from reality."
This is what esteemed Judge Austin316426808 had to say in his verdict...
"8/10. Reward."
Congrats, Despare!! You win a Rocket Launcher, with 2 Rockets!! (to go alongwith TWO bonus HPs you win for the 08 points)

Both the armed Finalists will be doing the hunting, and of course they can shoot anyone (even each other).
Be reminded, however, that The Predator is still on the loose inside The Zone, which is divided into three sectors - A, B & C.
Each of you Finalists have to send in your selection of sector in which you think The Predator hides. FAILURE TO CHOOSE A SECTOR WOULD MEAN YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE BLASTED ONCE BY IT'S PLASMA BEAM!
You have to complete your hunting by Midnight EST. If you fail to fire your arsenal till then, you stand to be shot twenty times by the Snipers in the watchtowers!
All the best!

RESULTS OF THE HUNTING SEASON - ROUND OF THREE
The timeline clock reveals this :-
- Hunter Despare hid quietly, waiting for Finalist Posher778 to come through the bushes. Sure enough, Posher did come in after a while, carefully surveying the sorroundings. Despare took careful aim, and let a rocket fly!
BLAM!
Posher778 heard the low whistle, but he didnt have enough time to dodge the full impact of the rocket. He was thrown over to one side, feeling dizzy with his body wracked in numerous pain spasms, as plenty of deep gashes and wounds sprung up all over him. By the time he hit the ground and got his HPs out, he was already bleeding profusely. 5 used HPs made him fit again, with 4 left in his possession.
- Hunter Zero looked on as Despare made mincemeat of Posher. He picked up his machine-gun and clamoured below his favorite tree, silently into the bushes. Soon, he came within range of Posher who was breathing heavily after applying HPs to himself. He picked up his Machine Gun and aimed directly at Posher's chest, then squeezed the trigger.
BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!
Six shots ripped through the air and thudded into Posher's chest. Posher gave out a loud groan and slumped forward, gathering his HPs very slowly and applying them to himself one at a time. After all 4 HPs were used up, Posher rolled to one side, wounded, some unhealed bleeding wounds making him weak.
Zero tucked his machine gun to one side and swung into the trees.
Silly unbelieving monkey, thought Despare, as he walked forward with intent to where Posher lay gasping for air amidst loud groans of wincing pain. Despare took one look at him, and re-loaded his Rocket Launcher with the second rocket he had with him.
Posher heard the click and looked at Despare with alarm and sudden dread in his eyes. Despare took aim, just as Posher tried to crawl away, and fired.
BLAM!
The rocket blasted right in Posher's chest, which burst open into loud chunks of burning flesh and sizzling blood. The immense blinding pain brought a huge wave of darkness with it, and Posher gladly merged into it with a final deep sigh.
Zero looked on, and smiled smugly.
POSHER778 IS DEAD!!
A pair of bright, white lights narrowed within the branches of a tall tree nearby. The Predator zoomed into a Finalist sitting on the top branch of another tree, and fired it's plasma beam.
THWUNK!
Zero felt a dull pain on his right side. He had swung slightly to have a better look at Posher's body, which had saved him from getting the full blast of The Predator. However, his lower back and waist area was on fire and he fell down from the tree, clutching his side. Zero howled once, and took his stock of HPs out to heal himself. 15 of them saved his life yet again, and he was fit just as the gates were thrown back open for both of them to walk back in.
And now we are down to the FINAL TWO...
Rest through the night...the next (and possibly final) Quest for both of you comes sometime tomorrow morning.

Congratulations on making it this far...

for the Quest which will crown one of you -
HDC BATTLE ROYALE KING!
Both Finalists - Despare and Zero - are hereby led into The Judgement Chamber, where both of them are stripped off all their arsenal (both winning and hidden) and all of their Health Packs!!
All FIVE Judges - NeverEnding, Doc Faustus, Hammerfan, Alkytrio666 & Austin316426808 - take out their LawUpholder guns and set it to Executor!!
I address both Despare and Zero -
"Finalists, your final Quest stands to be evaluated by all 5 Judges independently. In case of either one of you diverting off-topic or losing points, any/all of the Judges are free to shoot you Executor style, and since you have no HPs with you...I need not say what will happen should you get shot.
This is your common query :-
'I've heard a few people say that they should remake some of the old Hammer films. I think it's a horrible idea. Tell me what you think.'
Take your time, do plenty of research on it, before knitting together an answer which is clever, witty and good enough to impress the Judges suitably enough to out-score the other Finalist."
You have until Monday, NOON EST, to submit your answers.
All Judges are hereby requested NOT to share opinions with each other, and to evaluate, analyse, criticise and give your OWN independent verdicts on the answers submitted by each Finalist.
The higher-scoring Finalist wins the crown, obviously!
All the best, guys!

RESULTS OF THE FINAL QUEST OF HDC BATTLE ROYALE
This was the common query put forth to both Finalists :-
"I've heard a few people say that they should remake some of the old Hammer films. I think it's a horrible idea. Tell me what you think."
This was Despare's answer :
"This is a tough question because to be honest I’m not sure where I stand on the issue. Original thought be damned but I don’t hate remakes, especially if they’re taken with a sense of responsibility to the source material and delivered with a creative edge that adds something to the film. To really make a decision I guess I would have to take a look at some of the things that made Hammer Horror great.
The first thing that comes to mind for me is the actors, and Hammer had one hell of a stable. Who would we have stepping in for the incomparable Lee and Cushing duo? The film industry simply doesn’t have the “horror actors” that existed in the past. Sure, we have icons like Sid Haig and Tony Todd but it seems like they’re just tacked onto a film’s credits to attract horror fans. It works, but for me actors like that would not only be a poor substitute for Hammer’s headlining duo but they even seem incapable of replacing Hammer stars like Andrew Keir and Michael Ripper. If I were to wander into a theater and see a remake of a Hammer Horror starring some group of Mtv rejects I think I’d be pretty upset.
Atmosphere is probably what comes to my mind next and here’s where things get a bit clouded. While I think any studio would have trouble finding actors to suit the roles for a remake I believe a director would be fairly easy to find. Nobody stands out more in my mind when talking about atmosphere than Guillermo Del Toro. I could see a director like Guillermo taking the reigns of a Hammer remake and recreating the sense of wonder that those movie held me captive with. One thing Del Torro would have to change up a bit is his palette which is typically dark and not fitting in with the aesthetics of a true Hammer Horror. We need to see those rich, vibrant colors that helped the Hammer studio stand out. Other than this one man I can’t really think of somebody who is able to inject such perfect atmosphere into a horror film and maybe if we could get him to team up with Argento we would get some colors that suit the piece.
Looking at all the remakes today I really have a difficult time thinking that anybody can rewrite a good Hammer remake. One of the beautiful things about a Hammer film was that you could expect it to contain intelligent and adult oriented material. Can you really imagine somebody penning a remake to “The Curse of Frankenstein” and actually being able to make it as transgressive and entertaining as the original? Is there a writer out there who could re-script Baron Victor Frankenstein without transforming the character into a parody? It seems like remakes generally attract the scripts of the intellectually lazy and while it’s not a guarantee this would happen, my money says that it would. I believe we would see a gorgeous film turned into another PG-13 disaster with all the primitive violence and sexual content stripped from it unceremoniously.
I don’t have to go any further. After thinking about it I agree that remaking some of the old Hammer Horror films would be disastrous. I would hate to see a remake of a magnificent movie be released to a young audience that didn’t care and an older group of horror enthusiasts that were insulted by the replica. A remake couldn’t add to the genre or be as truly groundbreaking as the originals were and when I really think about it, I doubt they could be even half as entertaining. I submit that there’s only one thing that a Hammer Horror remake would be good for; a special edition re-release of the original film."
And this was Zero's answer :
"Now – on to the question: 'I've heard a few people say that they should remake some of the old Hammer films. I think it's a horrible idea. Tell me what you think.'
I’d respond to this question on two levels: the general question of remakes and, second, the specific question of Hammer Films.
Generally speaking, I don’t like remakes. There are some remakes that are quite good and, indeed, some that may be equal to or even superior to the original – Carpenter’s The Thing or the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But, by and large, remakes have diminished rather than equaled the luster of the original. The long line of lackluster remakes – and I’ll be up front and say I’m thinking of films like the newTexas Chainsaw or Dawn of the Dead – seem produced mainly to make money and cash-in on the notoriety of the original.
The other obvious problem with remakes is that they seem to be crowding out originality. What made the original Texas Chainsaw or Dawn of the Dead so amazing and wonderful was that they were original – and, indeed, it was this originality that helped shock and horrify audiences who had nothing to prepare them for what they were about to see.
My final comment related to remakes in general is a sense that remakes are diminishing our appreciation for the history of film. Here’s an example of what I mean. A few months back I had a couple of friends over and they said they’d never seen the original Dracula – so I popped it in. Not 10 minutes into the film, they were moaning and groaning that it was slow. This got me thinking – in a way they were right – Dracula is slow and stagey and grinds along. But what they were missing was all the cool innovations of the time – and the reason they were missing this is that they expected the film to be made like it would be made now. In other words, they were totally incapable of appreciating Dracula as a historical artifact. I think remakes play into this erosion because we learn to expect films to always be contemporary. Personally, I love older films for the same reason I love foreign films – because they are difficult to view – they require work and attention and patience, but for me the payoff is worth it.
Now, in terms of Hammer Films, I’ll confess to not being the biggest fan of Hammer Films. I do, however, appreciate many of them and recognize their place in the history of global horror and so the prospect of remaking Hammer Horror Films saddens me. I do recall hearing a rumor several years back that they were going to remake The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires with Tim Allen as the star – I think I threw up in my mouth a little. And, I can’t help but imagine that people wanting to remake Hammer Films would go either with a hammy/cheesy/comedic angle – or with a hyped-up, gored-up version. Of course the sad part is that what makes Hammer Films classic is that delicate balance between the two. Great sets, great actors, bizarre plots and bright red blood!
The fear that Hammer Films might get the remake treatment is, however, real. In 2007, Dutch TV producer and really exceptionally rich guy, John De Mol led a group who purchased the rights to Hammer’s 300 strong catalog. Now for those who don’t know de Mol, he made a fortune creating and producing the original versions of shows like Big Brother, 1 vs 100, and Deal or No Deal. Now I’ll be honest I’m no fan of these shows but the one thing that is clear about them all –they have virtually no budget and pander to popular tastes. This is a great formula for making money, but not a great formula for making classic TV or Film. So, given the real condition of the new Hammer Films – I also find the prospect of Hammer remakes horrific (and not in the good way).
It is of course possible that the new Hammer, which is being helmed by a couple of reasonably successful Hollywood types – Guy East and Nigel Sinclair, will take up the challenge of pushing the Hammer tradition in new directions while also finding ways to bring the Hammer classics to a new generation. I have seen the trailer for their first production, Beyond the Rave, which looked promising (in a ‘opening sequence of Blade’ sort of way). But, in final answer to the question, it is my hope that the new Hammer follows along the paths of crafting new tales and promoting the classics and not along the too-often treaded path of the remake."
And this is how the esteemed Judges turned in their verdicts for both very impressive and thoughtful answers on a scale of 0-10...
